to the June issue. As the warmer weather arrives the evenings and weekends seemed d to be fi fillled d wiith h th he sound d of people mowing their lawns and working in their gardens. The longer days also inspire me to tackle those jobs in the house I’ve been putting off for too long.

Some jobs are best carried out by a professional however and luckily here at Ibstock Life we get to know all types of local experts whether we need a plumber, decorator, plasterer or handyman, oven or carpet cleaner. And of course if you prefer to spend your time in the garden relaxing then we have a wide selection of gardeners to mow your lawn, weed your borders or completely redesign your space. Now that sounds like a better idea to me!

Timber is all about engaging with nature and relaxing. Join a range of health and wellbeing workshops and experiences including forest bathing, Reike, massage, laughing yoga and Wonderlandia’s traditional wood-fired red cedar hot tubs in the Woodland Spa.

Kids will love the giant marble run, a spectacular structure suspended through the trees. Youngsters can also get hands on with pallets, ladders and ropes to create their own world in Hammer and Chisel’s woodland playground.

Let’s all dance! Try Bhangra Tots, Bollywood Dancing Workshops, Maypole Dancing, or Flat Footing, an American style of improvised percussive dance from the Appalachian mountains.

Phill Jupitus, well-loved UK stand-up comedian and actor, will share his Wilderness Tracks with BBC Radio 4’s Geoff Bird. Theyy’ll be talking about the six pieces of mu usic that sum up Phill’s love of nature and the outdoors, with a huge dosse of his wry humour thrown n in. IBSTOCK SURGERY NEWS

If you’ve not signed up yet and would like to be included in this month’s draw, please pop in to reception to ask for a form to sign up, and if you bring two forms of photo ID we can sign you up then and there. Otherwise, download a form from our website www.ibstockhousesurgery.nhs.uk on the SystmOnline page.

The end of ‘Third Party Prescription Ordering’

From 30th June 2019 pharmacies will no longer be able to order prescriptions on behalf of patients. If this change affects you, please make arrangements to order your own prescriptions directly from the surgery.

Why is this happening?

Unused prescription medicines cost the NHS in England at least £300 million per year. We are regularly handed back hundreds of pounds worth

22

of unused medicines which have been ordered by patients and not used and these just have to be thrown away. Here is an example of what one patient returned. Most patients are able to take responsibility for ordering their own repeat prescriptions. This is safer, and evidence from other areas in the country shows that it may reduce medicines waste so all practices in West Leicestershire are implementing this change. If you’d like to find out more please go to the Latest News section of our practice website.

LOCAL COMMUNITY NEWS On Saturday 29th June a team of more than 15 bike riders will head off from The George & Dragon in Thringstone for a whistle stop tour of the local sports grounds in memory of Preston Henney, a local boy from Whitwick, who loved football and was a keen Leicester City supporter.

Nottingham Forest, Trent Bridge and Leicester City with a ride to Leicester Tigers included. The team will finish the day back at The George & Dragon. The total ride will be 120 miles. Preston Henney was diagnosed with neuroblastoma in January 2013, a rare form of childhood cancer of the nerve cells, and tragically died on 22nd April 2017 aged only 9 years. He and his family were supported by Rainbows Hospice.

Throughout the day the young riders aged 10 to 14, including Preston’s family and friends, will head back to The George & Dragon to drop off and pick up new members. The idea is to encourage people to join in and drop out of each leg and to do as much or as little as they want although most will be cycling the full distance.

In 2018, friends of the family decided to raise funds for the charity, by cycling from Preston’s much loved Leicester City FC ground to Preston FC via 5 other football grounds. This year’s event has already raised over £1,000 for this amazing charity.

The sports grounds to be visited include Burton Football Club, Derby Football Club, Notts County,

Avoid doing too much exercise at once. ‘Bingeing’ on exercise at the weekends is more likely to lead to injury risk which would stop you from doing any for weeks which would work against your intentions. Working out several times over the course of a week with varying exercises is the most beneficial to your health.

IN YOUR GARDEN

SHELTER - A WALLED GARDEN On Holy Island in Northumberland reached by a tidal causeway I was enjoying walking and taking in the wonders of the coastline and breathtaking scenery. I was however drawn like a magnet to the sight of a garden. It was a walled garden and an absolute treasure in so many ways. It seemed to be randomly placed in a windswept field, uninhabited by trees and only hardy breeds of sheep were visible residents. The little garden I had discovered was also just below Lindisfarne Castle. To my joy the garden layout of the garden was designed by architect Edwin Lutyens in 1906 and later Gertrude Jekyll made a planting plan for it. The garden was commissioned at this time by the then new owners who had Lindisfarne Castle converted for their holiday home. The brief for the garden was to ‘delight the summer visitors’. The plants featured flowers of bright colours and scents. Many of the plants specified in Jekyll’s design are still used in the garden today because The National Trust restored the garden to the original planting plan in 2003. The garden is so very windswept that if it wasn’t for the shelter that the walls provide the garden would not survive. The plants grown there include helianthus, anemone, hollyhock, santolina, stachys, delphinium, poppy and scabiosa. These are all plants that today are

By local garden designer, Francesca Sinclair For bespoke contemporary and traditional garden design www.francescasinclair.co.uk – 07901 547 360 readily available in garden centres. The Jekyll garden also has espalier fruit trees taking advantage of the sunny facing walls, and annuals such as sweet peas that give vibrant colours contrasts and sweet summer scents. Additionally raised vegetable and salad beds make for a working garden that produces seasonal food. Prior to the commissioning of the garden for the purpose of ‘delighting visitors’ the site had the more serious use of growing food. This was particularly so for the many years when there were soldiers occupying Lindisfarne Castle and their appetites needed satisfying. A walled garden of course gives a sense of retreat and privacy, but also for the growing of the plants it’s not just shelter from the wind that the walls provide. Inside a walled garden the temperatures are usually a few degrees warmer than outside, thus allowing more tender plants to survive and flourish. Traditionally kitchen gardens are enclosed by walls for this very reason. Locally Calke Abbey is an excellent example of a walled kitchen garden. Calke kitchen garden is restored now to its formal glory, it is producing a heart warming display of fruit salad and vegetables to inspire you - take a look, no need to go all the way to Lindisfarne.

A GREAT DAY OUT FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY! Ashby Steam is a two-day vintage steam rally held at Scamhazel Farm in Boundary, near Ashby. Visitors can step back in time and see a range of exhibits from steam engines to tractors, cars to stationary engines, motorbikes to lorries and much more.

Visitors can look forward to trade and craft stalls, a beer tent and a variety of children’s entertainment including a funfair.

Daily admission prices are £5 for adults, £2 for children and under 5’s go free. Money raised goes to help putting on future events and to local charities. Last year, donations were made to local Rotary clubs and Hospice Hope.

The venue is also home to Charnwood Forest Alpacas who will be offering taster experiences over the weekend to get up close to the resident alpacas and other animals.

For more information visit www.ashbysteam.co.uk or look for “2019 Ashby Steam” on Facebook.

Formerly the Ashby & Willesley Vintage Festival held at Moira Furnace, Ashby Steam moved to its new venue last year. Amazingly, this annual event is organised by a committee of just five volunteers and unsurprisingly, the team were delighted to be named finalists in not one but two categories for the Leicestershire Promotions 2018 Tourism and Hospitality Awards. THE NATIONAL OPEN GARDEN SCHEME

OPEN GARDENS IN JUNE Last month we introduced The National Garden Scheme. By opening gardens, this charity raises much needed funds for Cancer and Nursing charities such as Macmillan Cancer Support, Marie Curie, and Hospice UK donating over £3million last year.

So why not pop along for a chat? In addition it is a beautiful garden n combining both cottage style, modern sculptures, herbaceous planting and romantic arches of roses and clematis. Late June is a perfect time to see this

There are 49 gardens open in our local area in June for visitors to enjoy. Opening on Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd are two gardens in Loughborough, at 134 and 94 Herrick Road. Both are gardens attached to Victorian Terrace houses. 134 is a small garden brimming with plants, shrubs and climbers including herbs, and alpine bed, and a veg plot. The owner designs and makes her own willow plant supports which are on show around the garden and available to order. 94 Herrick Road is a traditional garden with a collection of Geraniums and Heucheras, a small pond, and three active beehives. If you are thinking of opening your garden under the scheme, Oak Tree House at South Kilworth (LE17 6DU) opens on Saturday 22nd June and the owner is the NGS Leicestershire County Organiser. garden, one of our special “Roses and Lavender” gardens, the beautiful rose arbour will be in flower, plus clematis and summer perennials. These are just a few of the gardens opening in June. In all gardens there are plenty of places to sit and relax, enjoy tea, homemade cake and the garden views. You can easily search for an open garden near you on the website, www.ngs.org.uk/find-a-garden/

ON THE BEAT

STAYING SAFE Recently we have seen an increase in street crime which may be connected to the lighter nights. It is often opportunistic, so making yourself less of a target, moving with purpose and being aware of your surroundings will go a long way to keeping you safe. Here are some tips on how to stay safe and feel more confident when out and about.

BE PREPARED

Plan your route in advance. Carry a charged mobile phone and some cash, and tell someone where you’re going.

BE ASSERTIVE

From the moment you step out onto the street in the morning, look assertive and act and walk with confidence. This will always make you appear in control and much less vulnerable.

BE AWARE

Using a mobile phone, whether making a call or texting, wearing a hood or listening to loud music, all affect your awareness of your surroundings.

HIDE IT

Keep your valuables including your mobile phone, other devices and jewellery, hidden. Remember, out of sight, out of mind. If you’re using your phone it’s more likely to be snatched from your hand as you’re not paying attention to your surroundings, so look around you. And never leave a mobile, any other device, wallet or purse on the table of an outdoor café, pub or restaurant. Same goes for any jewellery you might be wearing – keep it covered when walking down the street. Finally – and this is so important to remember – if you’re threatened with violence, don’t risk your personal safety. Property can be replaced, you can’t.

TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS

Try to avoid walking alone at night in places such as parks and side streets or any unfamiliar environment. If you do have to walk, stick to busy places where there is a lot of activity, CCTV and good lighting.

52

Find us online at www.ibstocklife.co.uk

MAKE A PLAN

And stick to it. First off, discu uss with friends what to do if something were to go wrong g on your night out together, eg if one of you has too much to drink or you were to get separated. Agree on a backup plan and look out for one another.

BE VIGILANT

Alcohol and drugs will reduce reaction times and inhibitions, which makes it harder to assess risks and decide how to deal with them. So keep an eye on how much you drink and never let your glass or bottle out of your sight.

SAFETY IN NUMBERS

Try to travel with people you know and, where possible, stick to routes and forms of transport that others are using and avoid shortcuts in lonely places If you do see anything please report it to the police on 101 or if it is happening in front of you 999 Alternatively call Crime stoppers who will take your details anonymously on 0800 111 555. THE CONSERVATION VOLUNTEERS

THE COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERING CHARITY This month the team has been offered three days’ dry stone walling near Copt Oak, a site we have worked on before. It’s a National Forest woodland, with a stone wall dividing two fields. Stone walls have many different characters, because they are so intimately connected to the local geology. Typically, a dry stone wall is constructed of stone scavenged from the very field it is built in, combining the benefits of removing unwanted stone, and making use of this as a resource. “Upcycling”, they would call it, if we first thought of it nowadays! Hence a stone wall may be very different from one only a mile away, as the changing geology gives differences in how crumbly, hard or brittle the stone is, and the size and shape that particular mineral combination breaks into. This wall is full of weird random stones which are hard to stack, and was obviously built long ago by people who were being paid by the length, not by the hour! They made a shocking job of it, and we are basically having to take the wall down piece by piece and rebuild it better. And with our volunteers’ pride in

doing a good job, the wall will be many times better by the time we are through. If you would like to join us and learn how (it is suitable for most healthy people – many of the team are pensioners, and the best natural waller I ever taught was aged nine) contact kay.thompson@tcv.org.uk
