EDITOR'S LETTER

Welcome to the Summer 2023 issue of Pavo. This term has been jampacked full of events, trips, matches, performances, fundraisers and enrichment activities. Our theme this issue is Journeys, which seems apt as we prepare to wave goodbye to our Year 13s and some much-loved members of staff. We hope you all have a wonderful holiday, wherever your journeys take you, and see you next term!

FirstLegoLeague

FIRST® LEGO® League introduces science, technology, engineering, art and math (STEAM) to children ages 4-16 through fun, exciting hands-on learning. Participants gain real-world problem-solving experience through a guided, global robotics program, helping today's students and teachers build a better future together.”

HowItWent

Preparation:

It took lots and lots of effort. We practiced after school and also during Tuesday lunchtime. We used a code system called SPIKE Prime. It used blocks to code the robot. We built numerous robots and then settled on one. It was compact and it also travelled smoothly from place to place. We also drafted mission plans. The missions plan helped us order the missions and helped us ensure which attachment the robot would need next.

Regionals:

The regionals were held in Bristol. It was a 30-minute drive from Westonbirt. We all had packed lunches which we took along with an abundance of sweets. We had so much sugar but we would soon need it. Once we had parked up, we collected our stuff and started walking there, We had pits in the conversion center where we would set up and present our work. We used images, 3d models and boards to show our ideas. Two Westonbirt teams went to the regionals, the Westonbirt Voyagers and the Birtbots. Birtbots came back with a Robot Design Trophy and Westonbirt Yoyagers came back with the Champions Award, securing a spot in the nationals.

The Nationals:

The nationals were held in Harrogate, about a four and a half hour drive from Westonbirt. There were six of us. We checked in at our hotel and then we got changed and went out for dinner. We went to a pizza resturant and the pizza was great. After that, we headed to the hotel. We spent about two hours working on our project. We finally all had showers and went to bed. We woke up early at 6.30 and got ready for the day ahead. We arrived at the convention center and sent up our new pit. We didn’t win but we were awarded a core values trophy and had a lot of fun!

ECO FLASH

In June, Westonbirt School teamed up with Greening Tetbury to run a flashfiction, nature-inspired competition for our talented Key Stage 3 students, here is our inspiring shortlist

IN THE HEART OF THE FOREST, TALL TREES RISE HIGH, A TAPESTRY OF GREEN, REACHING FOR THE SKY

THEIR LEAVES RUSTLE SOFTLY IN THE GENTLE BREEZE, A SYMPHONY OF LIFE, SINGING THROUGH THE TREES.

BUT AS THE WORLD TURNS, AND TIME MARCHES ON, THE TREES ARE CUT DOWN, THEIR BEAUTY GONE.

THE LAND IS CLEARED, THE EARTH LAID BARE, A BARREN WASTELAND STRIPPED AND BARE

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF DEFORESTATION IS CLEAR, A WARNING FOR ALL WHO HAVE EARS TO HEAR

THE TREES THAT ONCE STOOD, SO TALL AND PROUD, ARE NOW GONE FOREVER, CUT DOWN FOR THE CROWD

THE IMPACT IS FELT FAR AND WIDE, AS THE WORLD STRUGGLES TO TURN THE TIDE

THE LOSS OF TREES MEANS A LOSS OF LIFE, A WORLD IN CHAOS, FILLED WITH STRIFE

THE ANIMALS THAT ONCE CALLED THE FOREST HOME, ARE NOW DISPLACED, LEFT TO ROAM

THEIR HABITATS DESTROYED, THEIR LIVES IN PERIL, AS THEY SEARCH FOR A NEW HOME, WITH HOPE SO STERILE

THE SOIL THAT ONCE NURTURED LIFE, IS NOW EXPOSED, LEFT TO STRIFE

EROSION SETS IN, THE GROUND GIVES WAY, A LAND THAT ONCE WAS GREEN, NOW A LIFELESS GREY

THE AIR WE BREATHE, THE WATER WE DRINK, ALL AFFECTED BY THIS DEADLY LINK

THE TREES THAT ONCE FILTERED THE AIR, ARE NOW GONE, LEAVING US IN DESPAIR

THE CLIMATE CHANGES, TEMPERATURES RISE, AS THE EARTH STRUGGLES TO SURVIVE

THE IMPACT OF DEFORESTATION IS CLEAR, A WARNING FOR ALL WHO HAVE EARS TO HEAR

SHORT STORIES

I remember when the earth used to be green, endless fields of it that swayed in the breeze with a baby blue sky that spoke of happiness. I remember the time where the only lava you could find was in the very depths of volcanoes buried in the core of the earth and trees existed. Great conifers that pointed limbs to the clouds, and mighty oaks that stood on the rich soil for hundreds of years and have watched history change, and ended up changing unwillingly with it, until they existed no more. I remember the animals too, cheetahs faster than anything and the sound of the bird call that woke me up each morning, my alarm clock some would say.

I am writing this so that you don’t forget, and partly so I don’t forget. But when you read this, I probably would have died, as that is what happens to oldies like me. I won’t be around to see the earth's last days. You are the generation that has to though and I am terribly sorry for that. Sorry for everything I did to contribute to it. At least, the very least I can do is hope that you are safe.

The letter finishes there, with no name though the girl knew who had wrote it. She stands, thinking of the letters author, her grandpa, still down in the red. He was buried by now, dug by soil that was already half lava under the fallen ash tree that had always been his favourite. A tear falls on the paper and she quickly fold the letter before anyone can see, quickly walking to the oval shaped window to hide her watery eyes. The girl stares out into the galaxies of starry wonders that lie beyond the confined rocket, twinkling gold in the night surrounding the moon, a small crescent leaking gloominess upon the black and casting a dull white glow on the red dot that becomes smaller and smaller until it exists no more. Earth. Her “uninhabitable” home according to the people on the news.

And now what is everyone doing? Going to Mars to probably end up wrecking another earth. Everyone says it’s a “fresh beginning” though the girl didn’t think it was. It was more like the “inevitable ending”. What could be done? Humans were too selfish anyway, trashing their home and the animals too, making lava rule everything in existence. Nothing could be changed now, it was way too late for earth anyway. It would soon be gone, burning continuously until all that remained was floating ashes that would spin through the endless black. There would be a time where the same would happen for mars, and again everyone would leave it too late and ashes from both the planets would merge. Future generations will look at Mars, a burning ball of red as they fly to yet another planet. Unless…there was another way. Perhaps there could be. Perhaps not. Only time will tell.

SHORT

It used to be a beautiful world . . . a world with exotic animals, organic green trees, and grass sprinkled with dew. It used to be a green and blue planet in an artwork of a solar system. The rain used to play its music for everyone to hear, it’s pitter-patter would wash your worries away. It used to be a pleasure to live on Earth, amazing to breath in its refreshing air and walk on its almost unnatural green grass.

I wish it were like that now . . . that you felt loved and welcome everywhere.

Earth is broken . . . dead. Whatever you want to call it, there is no hope . . . no more magic in its core. Earth is now toxic and burnt, a red and black ball of flames in the solar system.

The ground that layers Earth is cracked and blistered, and the once refreshing air is polluted and foul. Most vegetation is dead as corpses, there’s barely anything left, only a few animals and humans, the rest . . . taken long ago by the earthquakes, volcanos or tsunamis. There are only myths of what made this happen . . . old stories about something called ‘climate change’ and ‘pollution’. But those are only stories changed by every generation.

The sun setting is the only thing worth living for anymore. As I sit on the sand dunes in a sweltering dessert and watch the sun dropping out the sky, it takes me away from this broken world. The sky turns a fluorescent rainbow, that slowly disappears, like ripples in water. The sun is gone and the cold and dark slowly creeps into my veins, like poison I rap my blanket around me that I took before the world began to burn and shrivel up like a rotten apple. My eyes gently close and I drift far far away from this horrible place.

I’m woken by a noise, I open my eyes quickly, I’ve overslept. The burning sun is high in the sky and I’m sweating in the sand. I quickly jump to my feet, scanning the surrounding desert for what made the noise. Something moves in the distance. As it comes closer, I see it’s a boy and he’s running from an outline of a beast. I start sprinting, falling into stride with the boy. My feet slip in the sand and legs feel clumsy and uncoordinated. The beast is getting closer, I can see it patterned coat out of the corner of my eye and hear its breath in my ear. My heart is beating fast and my legs are burning Just as I’m tempted to give up, I’m caught by surprise, I can see trees. I can see a whole forest of them, swaying in the wind and whispering. I’ve found it, I’ve found the last forest, like the old stories said.

“Hey girl, this way,” the boy shouted, turning to run round the forest. But I ignored him, heading straight forward into it. I heard the refreshing air call to me and the birds singing in the trees. I closed my eyes and opened them again. But it was gone, it was only ever a figure of my imagination. A glimpse from the past.

SHORT STORIES

The life of a tree

Once, I was a young sapling who lived in a massive forest the nature w and the flowers were blooming, people would water me every day and looking after me like I was there son. They let me grow and become bigg day I was a treenager, this was when they started to stop watering me, I cried for days and weeks sad that my parents had left me but that’s when they came.

Owls and ants, they made a home in my branches and they lived with me as though they were family. My job was to protect them and that is what I would do I let them live within me and that’s what I did for hundreds of years they kept coming and leaving until I was an old frail tree but they did not give up on me and instead the termites, ants and the owls rebuilt me they added support beams and much more but all I did was shelter them. They thanked me and they said they were grateful so I decided to give them some sap as a gift to remind them that I will be gone soon and you need to find a new tree so scout for one and leave me to decompose into the soil.

“CHOP THEM DOWN “screamed the men. That’s all I heard before I saw my brothers get cut down in front of my eyes the men ran towards me and scared the birds. I told the termites to run but they stayed and attacked. The men took out these spray things and struck the termites down but before anything else happened I felt a sharp axe go through my wood the sap was leaking out as fast as ever and I knew I was finished I launched my leaves away and they had gone but I was now in the back of a truck.

Then before I knew it, I blacked out but then I woke up in this house made of TREES how dare they insult my brothers they shall pay for this and those were my last words before I was split in half by a saw. The pain was excruciating as all the termites were murdered and I was split in half. Then they carried my limp pieces of wood into a truck and drove to a house, where I was stored in a shed ready to be burnt like the others.

What is it like being in Sixth Form?

Being in Sixth Form is great because you get the chance to study your favourite subjects in more depth and develop relationships with your teachers and year group.

What are you currently studying?

I am currently studying Maths, Further Maths, and Physics, and last year I dabbled in some Chemistry as well (I chose the subjects with the least possible writing...!)

Everyone knows you at Westonbirt, why do you think that is?

Well, when I first came to Westonbirt, I threw myself into all the opportunities available to me, which meant I met a lot of different people throughout the school, and I would like to think that I am quite personable and friendly, which definitely helps!

How are you dealing with exam stress?

Personally, I don’t feel much exam stress. From my perspective, if I put the work in and know that I have given my all, then the exams should reflect that.

Part

What’s your favourite thing about Westonbirt?

bumping along the off beaten track. Sun shone down from the gaps in the white clouds spun like candy floss. Amy restlessly fidgeted in her seat, winding down the window trying to get rid of the cloying heat that wouldn’t disappear. The rush of breeze filled the car and Amy stuck her head out for two blissful seconds before her Mum shouted she didn’t like the noise and her sister said it was too cold. Amy reluctantly winded it up trying to enjoy the outside air for as long as possible.

She had been dreading this trip weeks now, all of her friends are going somewhere fancy while all her family were doing was going to auntie’s and uncle’s house who Amy thought was mad, her mum thought there a bit wacky and on top of all that they lived in the countryside right in the middle of nowhere. It was going to be living torture. They were going for the whole summer holidays, six weeks. Amy had tried to escape the night before they were due to go but she only got to the bottom of the road before her mum realised what was happening.

The car trundled on, the edge of the forest thinning into stubby grass. The track continued on still bumping down a deserted road. Amy slumped down in her seat zoning in and out of her sisters incessant chatter about everything and nothing. She turned on her phone, sighing as the internet wouldn’t connect. She didn’t think there would be any so it didn’t come as a surprise. There was no wifi to text her friend like she promised she would.

Her sister reached for the controls, turning on radio 4. Amy had no idea why she even liked it, as it was just constant chatter with old men who spoke in low boring monotones.

“This is radio 4 weather”

Amy bit her tongue down so hard drew blood to stop herself from complaining, the guy who spoke sounded 100 and was going to pass out any moment from boredom.

“the weather is cloudy with a slight chance of rain”

No surprise thought Amy, looking up at the grey clouds ready to downpour any second from now. Music faded out as the presenters went back to talk about the recent news events. Amy slumped even more in her seat, wondering how this holiday was going to turn out.

She must have slept because when she opened her eyes they were driving down a twisty road with uncut hedges taller than the car. Radio four had thankfully turned off but sadly her sister was still talking, this time the subject was The X Factor, a show that Amy positively despised but her sister adored. She checked her phone again, heart dropping when it still came up with no internet. Her friends were going to think that she had gone mad already.

The car juddering to a stop shook Amy out of her thoughts. She looked around expecting to see her aunties and uncles squat thatched cottage but could only see the uncut hedge. Her mum sighed loudly as the car stopped in the middle of the road.

“And then she said this but the judges said she wasn’t made for the show shame really because….Mum why have we stopped?

“Broken down”

Her mum answered in a clipped reply, reaching for the controls to ring the AA but there was no internet. What a surprise. Her sister started talking again about what a shame it was that they might have to go home, while Amy tried really hard not to smile.

“Oh no, will we have to go home?”

Amy attempted to sound sad as she said it, but it still sounded overjoyed. “No, we will push it, the house is only a short distance away, come on.”

Her mum said, just as rain get any worse?

This term, the Year 9s created collages of wild animals using nature-inspired photography

First, cut out a paper template for the flags: fold a piece of paper in half and cut a straight diagonal line, then unfold to reveal a symmetrical triangle shape. You can make the flag template whatever size you like (ours was 13cm wide and 16cm high).

Take your chosen fabric and pin the paper template to the back of the fabric and use a pencil, or fabric pen to draw around it. Cut out the shape, adding a 1cm (¼in) border all the way around and repeat with as many triangles as you like.

Take a ribbon of your choice to act as the string, sew (or glue gun) your triangles along it until you have created your bunting!

This fun craft can be as quick or as detailed as you like, now hang your bunting anywhere in your house or garden to add some summer colour!

BOOKS &MUSIC FILM

This Fleetwood Mac-inspired book, series, and album trifecta has sparked a lot of conversation surrounding the series' release in March. With a strong reader audience from Taylor Jenkins Reid's original Daisy Jones and the Six, the series was destined to be an automatic hit. But what blew the series out of the water was a stellar cast, an alignment with the 70s revival in the trend cycle, and the cast members actually becoming members of a band. Starring Riley Keough (Elvis's granddaughter), Sam Claflin, Camilla Morrone, and Suki Waterhouse, the plot revolves around the formation of a band in the 70s. Navigating life in L.A., creative differences, and relationship drama, their story of the creation of their album, Aurora, is reminiscent of Fleetwood Mac's Dreams and the public's fascination with the band members' personal lives. In order to experience the story in a personal way, the cast members did something completely innovative: becoming the band.

Since the beginning of 2020, the show has been in the works, and for non-musicians such as Sam Claflin, the beginning of music lessons. Rather than dubbing the singing in the show, they decided to train their cast to become a band of their own, rehearsing the show's songs for two years.
