EVENTS
Events at Westonbirt are the glue that hold us together. From Jazz Nights to Easter Egg Hunts to frequent trips to Cirencester or Bath, they make the school the community it is, especially for boarders. With spring bringing us some warmer weather, the mood brightens on campus and smiles appear. Take a look at how Westonbirt students enjoy the outdoors and grow together as a community with some of the events happening on campus this term.
Xavier decided to be Luke Skywalker. He bought a helmet in Florida and thought it would be a good opportunity to wear it, and we have to agree. His vest was spray painted by him and wore a harness from his Dad who climbs.
Sheba's and Scarlett's costume was the cat in the hat by Dr. Seuss. At first they wanted to come as two characters of the book but then they felt like matching costume would be more iconic. They made the hats theirselves with only paper and tape and took two hours for it.
Ms Butterfield came as Captain Hook from Peter Pan. There was a English department theme of Villains & Heroes in fairytales. Ms Butterfield made the costume herself including pearls from her Christmas tree and necklace from a thrift store with her outfit from her dressing up box
Mrs Dangerfield came as Scout from To K Bird because she is her favorite char incredibly insightful young narrator. Mr also recycled some of her outfit by wear shoes from when he was young
Mr. Holland and Miss Morris came as the Greek god Odysseus and the goddess Athena from the epic The Oddysey. Their costumes and makeup were both handmade, with necklaces borrowed from Mr. Mew.

APPLAUDING OUR 11TH AND 13TH YEARS
As quickly as our winter break began, we were back in school and our Year 11 and 13 were hard at work taking their mock exams. This was particularly difficult for Year 13 who missed their GSCE exams due to Covid. So, this week brought a brand new struggle for these Sixth Formers. Mocks are a time to figure out what you need to improve before the real deal in the summer, so the pressure was on. One way the students in Year 13 found helps their ability to study and lower their stress levels is the aesthetically pleasing app, Flora, that allows for you to be more motivated to complete tasks, including schoolwork with virtual plants. By completing tasks and spending more time off your phone, your plants will thrive, check it out!
The Walled Garden:
Incorporating beauty into learning
A new edition to the Westonbirt campus, the eight Walled Garden classrooms were implemented in January. Used for a variety of subjects and year groups, the classrooms feature beautiful architecture inspired by the glasshouses that used to take its place. And, adjacent to the Italian Gardens, its location is tucked away in a scenic and serene part of campus, ideal for the learning taking place. Not only is this an innovative design which encourages hard work, but its scenic edition on the Westonbirt grounds pays homage to the history of the house. Robert Holford, the original owner of Westonbirt house is known for his love of orchids. With a team on hand keeping the Italian Gardens pruned and peaceful, the Walled Gardens now add on to the already present apprecation of beauty incorporated into the school. & with Mrs. Barnes
by: Taksal G.When did you start working at Westonbirt?
This is my 5th year. When I first came, I was a media teacher and then it wasn't long after that when I started as head of sixth form. And January last year, I became deputy head.
How do you ensure that all children at Westonbirt are happy and safe?
It is a collective responsibility. It’s a responsibility of every party that’s invested in that child. It’s everyone from tutors, teachers, student, parents, nurses, to Mrs Dangerfield and my role is to make sure that everyone is working together in a way that is good for the child.
Where do you find your motivation comes from?
My motivation comes mainly from people around me. I feel really motivated by my colleagues and very motivated by the pupils. They chall boundless energy and that gives me a lot of m the job and for working with young people.
Why do you like Westonbirt so much?
I love the quirks. The fact that we ’ re in this incredible environment which otherwise, I wouldn’t have access to on a daily basis. It really is inspiring. I love working with my colleagues.
What does leadership mean to you?
I think for me, it’s interesting; I was asked a very similar question not that long ago and I was sat delivering a presentation and somebody quite senior said to me, do you feel that you need to come up with all the answers? And I said absolutely not, that’s not my responsibility; in leadership mine is to recognise when people have answers and therefore how we can work with those answers. So I think, leadership is about teamwork and driving teams forward.
What is the best thing about your job?
The very best bit is, the feeling you ’ re left with at the end of a day, at the end of a term, at the end of a year. That reflective moment when you look back and you realise your amazing journey you ’ ve been on with all these amazing people. Whenever you get to speech day at the end of the year, and a year 13 student is accepting awards for all the things that they have done here and to know that you were a part of that is really rewarding.
If you weren’t a teacher, what would you be?
I’ll tell you what, if I wasn’t teaching, I’m would be on a boat, sailing across the world. I love sailing. I often visit the idea of just packing up my bag and sailing around the world but then I come back to the real world and realise that maybe I’m not ready to give up everything I’ve worked towards quite yet!
friends
tell MY me
My friends tell me of dreams they sleep
Of how they count their black and white sheep
When they all lie in their soft bed
Seeing visions of white and red
They slowly drift where danger can't reach
While I’m stuck here instead of a beach
My friends tell me they dream of love
How every night their met with a dove
They hop on and ride it
Heart on their sleeve
Flying to boyfriend and ex’s they leave
Holding on tight, they just glide away
While I’m stuck here feeling so grey
My friends tell me they dream of joy
Of Juliet, the girl and boy
How when they close their eyes and rest
Their slumber takes them past their stress
Yet I am here
Alone in bed
Thinking of the things that they said
Yet I am here
No sandman’s trace
While they are in their happy place
My friends tell me they dream of hope
And I lie here, trying to cope
Their mind makes pleasant things to think
And I lie here ready to sink
They think of their special someone
Then tell me that I am that one
By Elena H, Year 8The world is perceived differently in everybody's eyes, but my life is a little different.
Everywhere I go, it’s a struggle; new names, new personalities, new things to learn. School is hard for me, but its not the lessons you understand; it's the people, the new situations. You see, I’ve found that secondary school is a lot different to primary school!
I sometimes find it hard to fit in; I have a couple of friends but I’m not the best at picking out the most reliable, good sort of friends, though I’ve been lucky here.
Ever since I was little, I felt a bit different; I didn’t get situations. I thought if I looked at what other people were doing and copied them, I could learn how to be popular.
People are complicated, they are never just feeling the one emotion, it's all these different emotions and I can't tell what they are feeling so it's really hard for me, but I’ve grown up enough to know that I don’t have to be popular – frankly it's too much effort to be cool and funny, it's so much better to just be kind.
I’m incredibly lucky, I have some good friends that accept me for who I am, amazingly autistic. For years I was asking myself the wrong question – what do I need to change about myself in order for people to like me, but now I have learned not to try to be different, but instead to be myself, because that’s how I was brilliantly and uniquely designed.

Park Beach
I go outside to refresh my face
Look around and say "what a wonderful place"
Filling my shoes with my feet, my mind with my thoughts
I see past through the gates, to my friends playing sports
I run like the wind, like a bird in its flight
My eye drifts to the sun, in awe of its light
Finally arriving at the park with new eyes
Seeing things brighter, like daisies and magpies
We play for hours, resting when worn
And when we lie on the grass, I feel so warm
Looking up at the sky, I see blue with white spots
And when the bugs fly past, they're like little black dots
The time is asleep, but the day still awake
Rays of the setting sun, shine down on the lake
I begin walking home, reliving my day
Going back through the moments I see on display
Left foot after right, I watch my steps as home nears
Darkness turns light, as the structure appears
I enter my house, with dreams in arm's reach
Hoping they're about my day at Park Beach.

SPORT 2spring 023
By Rosie B and Jemima BInterview with Mrs Grey
What was your favourite sport when you were younger?
My favourite sport has always been netball, I played it in year 4 and managed to make the year 6 netball team. I started playing it and I loved it immediately. My other sports were athletics, cricket, swimming and rugby.
How can you help a student who has difficulty learning a specific skill or sport?
Every pupil is different and will learn differently I try to ensure that every pupil understands and help them if they’re struggling I explain the task several times and also use demonstration.
What are your weaknesses as a sport teacher?
With sport comes competition and this is the part I sometimes find hard as a PE teacher. Selecting a team can sometimes be difficult as I know I might be disappointing some players who have not made the team they wanted to play in
What are your strengths as a sport teacher?
My ethos as a PE teacher is to ensure everyone enjoys sport and with this, they find the sport the love the most and might play when they leave school. There is a sport out there for absolutely everyone, you just need to find it. As netball is my favourite sport and the one I teach the most at Westonbirt, I like it when everyone is enjoying themselves and playing in a team
Why were you interested in becoming a sport teacher?
I used to be quite good at 100 metre sprints and was training at Bath university, I then stopped competing and started coaching instead, that’s when I realised I loved teaching!
When did you join Westonbirt?
I joined Westonbirt in 2015, at the time I was Sport coordinator in the prep school and head of senior netball. In between this I went to teach in Singapore for a couple of years, which I thoroughly enjoyed! I returned to Westonbirt in 2019 as a PE teacher in the senior school and head of netball.

The Deserted Caravan
It had been a long day walking through the woods with her. We had been trying to escape, but the myths were true, once you got in you
ISA WRITING COMPETITION ENTRIES
couldn’t get out. We climbed trees and rocks, through bushes and rivers but still no sign of life. Just emptiness. Mum pleaded to come with us but I insisted not to, how foolish. As the sun began to set I knew we had to find shelter, so I began searching for long pieces of wood, leaves, and anything else to shelter us through the night. Luckily she stayed by my side, helping me lift the things I was too weak for. Eventually I was too exhausted, so attempted lighting a fire. Once it got started everything was much clearer and I could see us both with ease. I looked around, checking for danger or help. In doing so I came across a figure, larger than human. At first I was scared but built up the courage to explore. Pushing through any loose branches I fell in front of what looked like a large car. My interest took over and I motioned for her to come too. After exploring we found food, water and a small mattress to sleep on. When I woke up, she was beside me and the fire was still lit. After gently nudging her awake we both ate food and extinguished the fire. At this point mum could’ve had the whole police force looking for us but they wouldn’t find us, not if we kept moving, so I suggested to stay here by – what I now realised was a caravan.
We rationed all and any foods we had. After breakfast she stayed behind as I went to look for raspberries and blackberries – the only food I knew was edible around here. By the time it got to lunch my hands were full and dripping with juice as I made my way back. We both sat there enjoying the food and although what was happening to us was terrifying the surroundings were enchanting and unreal, I couldn’t believe I was spending these horrifyingly incredible times with her.
Hours passed and it was once again night, so we went inside and listened to the owls talking. I could feel her soft breath on my skin as the night grew and I continued to be untouched by the sandman. Day came and we went back to eating, picking, playing and sleeping. This felt like it went on for weeks and although I missed mum it was delightful being with her during these moments. The time came for me to go picking fruit and now also hedgehog fungus mushrooms, before lunchtime came around. I took longer than usual as we had already taken the foods nearby. Finally I’d finished and went back to the caravan. I placed down all my findings ready to cook the mushrooms and squeeze some berries into juice, but the fire wasn’t lit and our cups weren’t out. What had she been doing all this time if not getting everything ready?. I looked around after realising I hadn’t actually seen her yet. Panicking I began shouting for her. “Where are you!”, I exclaimed “This isn’t a time to joke!”. I panicked I’d already been without her before, I didn’t want to again, not like last time, NO! I blacked out. My eyes felt tense. My mouth glued shut. Finally they opened, jolting up I looked for her again without realising I wasn’t by the caravan anymore nor in the woods. I was at home, in my bed, head pointed towards the ceiling. What was going on? Mum walked through the door. I burst in tears, hugging her with any strength I had. “Mum I’m so sorry I should’ve let you come, I should’ve listened to you.” She said nothing. She just looked at me with most warming smile I’d seen for weeks. I didn’t want to break the moment but I had so many questions. “Where is she?”. I asked knowing that was the only question worthy. “Who darling?”, she asked. “Stephany”, I said, fearing the answer. “Oh darling not again, Stephany …… she………. Isn’t here anymore, remember?”. I gasped “NO!”. Then it struck me, I was the one lighting the fires, setting the table, making the hut. No one was there but me. I remembered Stephany had died of cancer 2 years ago, I was alone all this time. “But she felt so real mum, where is she?!”. There was silence and mum’s eyes watered. “She was there sweetie, just in you heart.” Mum hugged me as I felt Stephany’s presence, I looked up and saw her. “Stephany”, I cried reaching for her. But mum held me back while I watched her drift away.
By Elena H. Yr 8My last trip to Columbia was eight years ago. I was twelve when I last went, and I had all my family with me. Now I have no one, but I was once again on my way to Columbia. As I stood in the queue, I pondered on what my family would be like.
My cousins, when I last saw them, were six and eight. Now they would be fourteen and sixteen, almost grown up! And my aunt and uncle, two of my favourite people in the world. My abuela I’d missed so much, and I couldn’t wait to see her again.
I’d been excited for this moment for years, and it was definitely worth the wait. As I started to board the ship, my pace quickened, my heartbeat rose. If you could not already tell, I was thrilled to be getting on that ship.
Through the corner of my eye, I spotted something -the most magnificent boat I had ever seen. It had the whitest sails and the smoothest deck. Up close, it was the biggest, greatest ship of all time. I had to get inside. Checking that no one was coming, I hurried across the port and into the boat. Footsteps had started walking along the corridor behind me, so I dived into a room and behind a sofa. “We can’t continue like this!” Two men had come into the room and started talking. “What choice do we have?” the second person was saying to his companion. “The boss will never let us quit, not with what we know.” Thoughts were rushing through my head, what were they talking about and who was this ‘Boss!?’ About five minutes later they left the room. “Phew I can breathe again,” I muttered to myself. I quickly realised that talking was a mistake as it brought a tickle to my throat, and hiding behind a sofa full of dust was not helping. “Achoo!” I tried to be as quiet as possible, but at that precise moment the captain of the ship walked past the room. Suddenly, I was dragged to my feet.
A Wave of Disaster (cont.)
I was escorted down a corridor with a key shoved into my hand, and next I was thrust in my cabin. Sighing, I waited for the ship to leave port. Looking out my window, the other boat was being loaded onto our vessel. Eventually I watched the sea calmly bob up and down. Some fish darting this way and that, others peacefully swimming by. The tranquillity was just what I needed. As I walked along the corridor the old paintings felt as if they were staring into the back of me. The hairs on the back of my neck had started to rise, a shiver went up my spine. Someone was watching me. Quickly, I whipped around to see nothing out of place. Wondering if I had been hallucinating, I slowly turned back to walk up the stairs. Even before I got up there, I could hear the jolly music played by the band upon the top deck. As tempting as it was to dance, my stomach said no. So I went searching around for the dining hall. “Excuse me, do you know where the restaurant is?” I found myself asking some strangers. The first turned around and growled at me with an ugly scowl on his face. However, the second gave me an answer: “Take the second door on the left of that corridor.” I confidently walked down the hallway until I reach theright door. Within fifteen minutes I was tucking into some delicious fish and chips and munching on a scoop of heavenly ice cream and sticky toffee pudding. I paid the bill and got ready to leave. I walked out of the restaurant and back to my room when I remembered my coat was still inside. I headed into the building to see the same man in the black coat who growled at me earlier that evening. Two minutes later I entered my room and the next thing I knew the lights cut out. I slowly turned around just to see a silhouette slipping into the bathroom. “Just open the door,” I nervously muttered to myself. So I did...
Imi F. Y8The Deserted
Caravan
I’m finally telling the one story that messed up my life. I used to love travelling but now I don’t. Something followed me back from that trip and it hasn’t left me alone.
I was travelling through some woods on a deserted island and I came across a little clearing. At first I didn’t see him, I only saw a little rusty caravan. It was an eerie sight, the dark shadows of the woods looming over the little vehicle and a big padlock on the front of the door. I thought it must have been a previous traveller’s, and I decided to stay the night near the caravan. As I set up camp, it started to get dark, so I lit a little fire. I think that’s what awoke him, because since that night, he hasn’t left me alone.
As I wanted some sleep, I went into my tent, but little did I know, going to sleep was one of the worst things to do. I think the reason he followed me was because he was hungry. I woke up in the middle of the night and felt the urge to go outside but I decided to stay in the tent. I needed to stay inside or he would get me. The next morning, I woke up and I wanted to leave but I couldn’t. I tried to walk away but I couldn’t. I called on my emergency radio, but I couldn’t. I was trapped.
I decided to look at the caravan. The lock was rusty and fell off when I gave it a tug, then, I walked inside. Inside the caravan was mouldy and dusty. The ceiling was green and the floor had grass growing through. But the bed, the bed was made and clean. I looked around and, in the bathroom, I found bones. Not one or two but hundreds. At first, I thought it must have been animal bones but then I saw a skull. When I realised where all of the travellers that had gone missing were, I screamed, slammed the door and ran. But after a while of running, I realised I was just going round and round the woods. I was starting to think that there was no way out. I heard a twig snap behind me but all I could see were shadows. It felt like I was in a bad dream.
The Deserted Caravan cont.
I finally found the clearing again, just before nightfall, but I was fearing it was too late for me. But then as soon as I got back to my tent, my radio started saying ‘traveller still not found after 50 years’, I thought nothing of it until they said my name. I tried to use my radio but nothing else came from it. So, I decided to sleep. That night I heard scratching on the trees outside my tent and I saw shadows outside. That night I didn’t sleep, not for one second.
But the next morning, I looked outside, and the trees were the same and so was the grass outside my tent. I tried the one thing that I could do. I ran, but this time I found the beach and my boat, and I escaped. But he didn’t leave me alone.
He has almost complete control of me now, but I can still sometimes think for myself, that’s why I’m writing this, to let someone know, never sleep near the caravan. You might think it’s safe but its not. He will never leave you alone. He is still in the shadows, watching me and everyone nearby. When I die, he might haunt someone else, controlling them, driving them mad. I haven’t told anyone this story because everyone I care about died in the 50 years I was on the island. I can’t control what I do, I’m sorry.
By Holly H. Yr8As I walk along the street, I pay no attention to the octagonal rainbows decorating the ground. To others it may seem beautiful, breath-taking even, but to me it’s just a symbol of my oppression. I'm not very talented at science, but I do know that they are formed from the light refracting through the octagon-shaped windows of the dome surrounding our city.
"Rose!" I whip my head around to see my friend Tina waving.
"Why is it that wherever I go, you go too?" I ask, slowing down until our footsteps are in sync.
"Small town in a big dome I guess, " She replies, shrugging. I roll my eyes at the phrase.
"Still not a fan of the dome?” Tina guesses.
"I just hate the fact that we ' re stuck in here,” l admit, "I mean, there's no reason why we shouldn't be allowed to explore the outside. It's not dangerous, is it?" The dome was built 3 months ago, with no further explanation from the government. This left the entire town alone to create their theories about why this happened. The most popular theory is probably ‘the outside is dangerous’ or ‘there’s a war going on out there'. I think that they’re hiding something from us.
I throw my backpack across the room and collapse on my bed. Snatching the stack of postcards from my bedside table, I stare at the pictures with longing eyes. A crystal clear wave frothing on a golden beach; an elegant panther leaping through the lush undergrowth; an adorable fluffy polar bear cub perching on a slab of ice. All of these are places that I will never get to experience anymore. All because of the dome. All because of our totalitarian government.
The Other Side (cont.)
All because no-one has ever figured out how to escape. But you know what they say; there’s a first for everything.
“We’re really doing this?” Tina says doubtfully.
“No, we walked 3 miles to the edge of the dome at 10:00 to decide not to escape.” I say wryly, “Now, pass me the hammer.” She reluctantly obliges and watches as I start tapping the corners of a panel.
“I really hope that this is safe, Rose... If I die, there will be no-one to look after Stanley.” Tina says quietly, fiddling with her necklace. I flash her a comforting look before going back to work.
“The chances of you dying are pretty slim,” I turn around and reassure her, “but even if you do, I’m sure your brother will be absolutely fine. He’ll go into your uncle's custody and-”
Crrrrr-aaaa-aack!
I whip my head around to see a giant crack in the panel, reaching from one corner to another. Branches slowly stretch from it as if they’re growing, extending towards the edges of the glass. I stare at it, adrenaline corrupting me. My brain wills me to move, to say something, but my body stays firmly in place, my eyes tracing the crevice. Bit by bit, the glass shattered before my eyes, until all that’s left was an empty frame. And, for one blissful moment, the world is silent.

Hi, um hello?.. my name ' s Puck

There’s misfortune hate and luck
And the ending may be gory...

Although Demetrius loves herms... But Hermia and Lysander love each other
The story is mainly set
In the woods far away Its not when they met It’s at night they say
This story is narrated by puck aka me, 3, 2, 1 its time to start, are you ready?
So basically, Herms and deme We’re meant to be together
Said all of Hermia’s family
But Hermia loved Lysander
So Hermia had a plan to run to the wood With Lysander by her side
They found a spot which was good And got ready for the night
Hermia told her best friend Helena
Who told Demetrius as well
They went to the woods to get her That night was going to be hell
When they all settled soundly for a sleep Oberon told me in a peep
“Run!..Go get a love flower
I really need to use it
Hurry up, you couldn’t be slower Also put it on Demetruis”
I put on a random sleeping guy
Who I thought was Deme it turns out he was Hermia's boy and the ending was quite smelly…
when daytime came around Helena woke Lysander up
“oh Helena you make my heart pound”
“What is your problem” Helena said in a grump
Oh no oh no oh no I said Then I found deme still in bed…
He's the man who Helena loves So I put the rest of the flower on him
I should probably wake him up
“Helena you make my heart grin”
“what are these pranks you are playing?”
Said Helena annoyed and upset
“I love you” is all the boys are saying “Well, get out of that mindset”
Hermia walks in after her snooze “hi ly where did you go?”
“Of to my darling Helena- why are you confused” “I.. I thought you loved me though...”
By this time it was gettingdquite ark
You couldn’t see anything not even bark
“Oberon” I shouted, “quick help”
“I got into quite a mess you see ” Oberon promised things would gowell..
He Set everyone love potion free!!
Luckily after the night in the next day
There would be no more confusion
All the love feeling went away But things weren’t quite normal…
“I’m sorry Lysander I’ve got to go” Lysander stood there shook “No Hermia please you don’t have too!!”
“Is it because of my looks?”
Hermia ran off looking for her sweetheart
And there she was, Helena they could never be apart
So there we are
That’s the nearly end And only a few broken hearts But they can always mend
The ending of the tale
Is love finds its way around And some ships were made to sail And a heart will always pound
Told by the one and only me
The infamous puck
A day of she or he With love misfortune and luck
Thanks ladies and gents and I won’t forget you
Oh, and guess what Oberon had a happy ending too
