Luigi’s changes hands, will soon change name Food and service outstanding at this neighborhood Italian eatery

By Jananne Abel It s been almost a year since Luigi s Restaurant & Pizzeria in Port Chester was sold. Soon its name will change to reflect that new ownership.

The Dattilo cousins, who took over the 414 Willett Ave. eatery and reopened it on May 16, 2001, hail from a family of Italian restaurateurs. For their young ages they have already been in the business a good number of years.

Their experience shows in the quality and variety of the dishes and eagerness to please their customers. The latter is so important in the restaurant business where competition is fierce and patrons need to feel welcome and appreciated.

Frankie and Louie Dattilo have already changed the menu covers to reflect the new name and are just waiting for approval of their new sign and awning from the Port Chester Architectural Board of Review to officially announce it. That s expected in a few months.

I wanted to separate from the previous owner, to break away, said Frankie, 23, of White Plains as the reason to make the name change to Frankie & Louie s. He makes pizzas and runs the front end of this fine Italian restaurant while cousin Louie, 34, of Mamaroneck is the chef and takes care of the kitchen.

Previously Frankie ran his father s

place, Mario s Pizza in White Plains, where he worked since he was just a boy about 10 years. He and his two brothers also had a restaurant called Mario s Pizza in Armonk which they recently sold.

Louie worked at Sal s Pizzeria in Mamaroneck, owned by his uncle, for 13 years before joining Frankie in this new venture.

One of the waitresses at Luigi s was a friend of Frankie s and told him the previous owner was looking to sell which is how they ended up in Port Chester.

Besides creating the menu and a weekly array of weekend specials, Louie, who was trained at the New York Restaurant School in New York City, is also a pastry chef. He makes all the desserts such delicacies as strawberry custard cake, napoleons, chocolate mousse cake and American and Italian cheesecake. The pumpkin bread cake he dreamed up and made for the first time last weekend was so popular that it was gone in one day.

Louie also gets pretty creative with special occasion cakes, decorating them with all sorts of candies and creams to create the desired effect. Whether it s racing, Nintendo, a cartoon character or golf that turns on the person for whom the cake is intended, Louie can come up with the appropriate design. Cakes

Besides an extensive menu featuring appetizers, salads, soups, wedges, pasta; veal, chicken and seafood entrees; pizzas, gourmet pizzas and calzones, every night offers something special. For example, every Monday and Tuesday you get a large pizza plus 50 chicken wings for $17.95. Every Wednesday is Family Style Night where dishes to serve 2-4 people from a special menu of pastas, chicken, fried calamari and eggplant rolatini plus salad cost $19.95. Thursday is Meat Lover s Night featuring prime rib, rib steak pizzaiola, veal chop campagnola, lamb chop, broiled chicken or stuffed pork chop with salad or pasta for $12.95.

Sunday is Pasta Madness offering a choice of six pastas with salad for $6.95.

The Monday and Tuesday specials will soon be going up to $18.95 and the Pasta Madness to $7.95. Thursday nights will change to Ravioli Night with all kinds of ravioli and salad for $10.95.

In addition, on Friday and Saturday nights there are 4-5 pasta and 7-8 entrée specials. It s almost like a new menu, said Frankie. We have a lot of repeat customers and don t want them to get bored, giving them a lot to choose from.

The décor is pleasant, food is exceptional, prices are reasonable, entrées come with a salad or pasta, desserts are outstanding, and the service is friendly and efficient.

Popular entrées include Chicken Scarpariello made with cherry peppers and sausage in a white wine and lemon sauce, Chicken Francese ($11.95), Veal Scallopini Marsala ($12.95) made with a sauce of Marsala wine and mushrooms.

Penne a la vodka ($9.95), sometimes made with chicken or sausage added, remains the most popular dish. Any which way you have it, it sells, said Frankie. His favorite entrées are Chicken Marsala ($11.95) and rigatoni with shrimp and chicken in a brown sauce ($13.95), a special.

Luigi s also features several daily lunch specials 4-5 pastas at $6.95 and 4-5 entrées at $8.95 in addition to a variety of small, large and Sicilian pizzas (ranging from $9 for a small cheese pie to $19 for a Luigi s Special Sicilian with everything on it. Gourmet pizzas range from $12.95 for a small white pizza with broccoli, $14.95 for focaccia, $15.95 for salad pizza and $19 for stuffed pizza.

Wedges are $4-6, salads from $3 for a small garden to $6.95 for antipasto and $8.75 for a large grilled chicken Caesar.

Calzones (cheese, meat and cheese, sausage and pepper and chicken roll) are $3-4.
