he annual Memorial Day observances and parade for Port Chester, Rye Brook and the Town of Rye will be held on Monday, May 27, the day Memorial Day is being observed throughout the country. The day will begin at 8:45 a.m. with a memorial service at the Port Chester Marina off Abendroth Avenue to honor those who served and died at sea. Flowers will be strewn upon the water and Taps will be played during the brief ceremony. It will continue at 9 a.m. at the William James Memorial Gateway Park at North Main Street and Putnam Avenue where there will be a short ceremony consisting of shots by the Port Chester Post 93 American Legion Color Guard and Firing Team, placing of a memorial wreath and Taps. It will continue at 9:15 a.m. with a similar ceremony at the Vietnam War memorial in Lyon Park, corner of King Street and Putnam Avenue. Immediately thereafter, the ceremony will be repeated at the police memorial in Lyon Park. The Spanish-American War Memorial in Summerfield Park, King Street and Willett Avenue, will be the next stop at 9:30 a.m. where another short ceremony will take place. The assemblage of veterans will next convene at 9:45 a.m. at the Civil War monument at the intersection of Pearl Street, New Broad Street and Boston Post Road. The firing team will next gather at 10 a.m. at Port Chester American Legion Post 93, 78 Pearl St., for a brief ceremony. At 10:30 a.m., the color guard and firing team along with local veterans and members of the public who choose to participate will come together at the monument in front of Port Chester Fire Department headquarters on lower Westchester Avenue. The ceremony will conclude with Taps. The Korean War memorial in Rye Town’s Crawford Park, just inside the North Ridge Street entrance, will be the site of the next Memorial Day gathering at 10:45. At 11 a.m., the main ceremony will begin at Veterans’ Memorial Park, North Regent Street and Westchester Avenue. Wreaths will be placed at the World War I, World War II and Korean War memorials in the park. Top elected officials from Port Chester, Rye Brook, Rye Town, as well as County Legislator Nancy Barr, Assemblyman Steve Otis and State Senator Shelley Mayer have all been invited to attend and deliver brief remarks. The Port Chester American Legion Band will perform. The firing team will shoot, and Taps will be played. After the ceremony, there will be a parade down Westchester Avenue. Besides the veterans and public officials, school and civic groups, Boy and Girl Scouts will march in the parade. The procession will disband at Broad Street. Bill Chiappetta, acting commander of the Port Chester American Legion Post 93, is organizing the Memorial Day ceremonies and parade for the seventh time this year, with the assistance of the Village of Port Chester. All these groups from Port Chester and Rye Brook are welcome to march even if they haven’t been specifically invited. “I’m trying to get anybody and everybody,” Chiappetta, who was a sergeant in the 518th MP Corps doing riot control during the Vietnam War era from 1967-69, said. The Villages of Port Chester, Rye Brook and the Town of Rye contribute monies toward the cost of the ceremonies—the memorial wreaths for each memorial and monument being the major expense. Refreshments will be available at the Port Chester American Legion Post, 78 Pearl St., following the parade. Everyone is invited. All ceremonies and the parade will take place rain or shine.
