Restaurant review

The Waterfront Grille: Good food in a glitzy atmosphere T

By Jananne Abel

he Waterfront Grille, which opened May 22 in the Waterfront at Port Chester development at 42 Westchester Ave., was designed to be more than a restaurant. With its high ceilings and glitzy yet sophisticated atmosphere, it was supposed to create a New York feel and be a place where people of all ages could have dinner and then hang out afterwards. Gerald Longi, 48 and in the restaurant business for more than 25 years, created The Waterfront Grille with his son Michael, 23, in mind. “With Michael coming of age and growing up in the business, he wanted to get into a bigger club atmosphere,” Gerald said. Before opening The Waterfront Grille, the Longis, who now live in Cortlandt Manor, have owned pizzerias and Italian restaurants in Manhattan, Queens, Yonkers and Cortlandt Manor, still holding onto the original Primavera Pizzeria at 53rd Street and 2nd Avenue which opened in 1980. From that experience comes the menu at The Waterfront Grille, which serves American cuisine with an Italian flair. Salads, burgers, steaks, ribs, chicken, fresh fish, Chicken Parmagiana, Fettuccine Alfredo and Penne alla Vodka are among the offerings. The Waterfront Grille is on two levels. A large rectangular bar with flat screen TVs on four sides, a lounge, the main dining room and a second cozier dining room are located on the first floor with added seating, a second smaller bar, another lounge area, two pool tables and two flat screen TVs upstairs. It’s a pretty, striking place affording different views depending on where you sit. In the main dining room there are roomy horseshoe-shaped booths covered with black, green, brown and beige fabric and heavy wooden tables in medium tones. Other tables have chairs with wooden backs and black seats. Black and white lights hang over the tables which are set with white napkins and small candles. From this dining room you can see a fake balcony with a railing across it on one side and the open second floor with square black tables, low lights over pool tables, leather couches, two large screen TVs, a bar and a prominent stone deejay booth on the other. You can reach the second floor by climbing steps on either side of the large downstairs space. From upstairs you have a good view of the pretty bar below surrounded by tall light wood chairs with black seats. The top of the bar is light blue lit from underneath to look like water. Tiny white lights under the lip of the bar add to the glitter. The floor is shiny black with blue, silver and gold speckles directly under the bar and light wood expanding out from there. The tall cinderblock walls that surround the bar are painted a peaceful lavender and are decorated with black and white photographs of well-known musicians like Louis Armstrong, John Lennon, Mick Jagger, Ray Charles and The Beatles. Couches in the same fabric as the booths in the main dining room are accented with throw pillows in black, magenta, red and gray and provide room for more casual seating adjacent to the bar. The smaller dining room, meant to double as a dance floor after dinner, has off-white plush walls hung with black and white photographs of famous entertainers from the past like Frank Sinatra, Marilyn Monroe, James Dean and Elvis Presley. The room is filled with granite look black and white

tables and wooden chairs painted black with offwhite plush seats the same as the walls. The shiny black tile floor has blue, gold and silver specks. The back wall of this room is made of cut stone, continuing the material from the deejay booth above. The space is also outfitted with a track of lights to be used when it serves as a dance floor. From this vantage point, a large fancy “W” on the opposite wall stands out.

Elusive cabaret license

The intention of the owners was to attract people from 25 to 55 by booking bands, deejays and offering karaoke on alternating nights to appeal to different age groups. However, as Gerald Longi described it: “It was an oversight on my part not knowing the village was not receptive to cabaret licenses.” First of all, he didn’t realize he would need a cabaret license to have music. When he found out, he didn’t know it would be a problem getting one and certainly not that cabaret licenses are not allowed in the zone where his restaurant is located. The owners can’t promote the entertainment they intended to offer until this issue is resolved. “That’s why we took such a large space,” Longi said. They put in a deejay booth, water cooler and three fire exits with the expectation of being able to hold up to 400 people. Their landlord, developer G&S Investors, said they would be able to get a cabaret license, he said. It took more than a year to complete the build-out of the establishment. “We applied and had no idea it would be flatly rejected,” he said. “This was all news to me a month before we were to open.” “It was a big part of what we tried to accomplish—a whole night out with dinner, cocktails and dancing,” Longi continued. “That’s why we thought this was a good location where we could attract people from Port Chester, Greenwich, Rye and Harrison.” It was never their intention to seat more than 150-160 people for dinner because they wouldn’t be able to serve more than that effectively and efficiently. The 2-story establishment with 4,600 square feet on the first floor, 1,400 square feet on the second and 22-foot ceilings was assigned an occupancy of 248 people by the Port Chester Building Department which Longi feels is “totally unfair.” “We can seat 200 people plus have plenty of open space,” he said. The downstairs dining rooms seat 70 and 36, upstairs seats about 60 and another 30 can fit around the bar. The restaurant has phenomenal lighting and a state-of-the-art sound system “which unfortunately people haven’t heard,” Longi said. The lighting and sound system are used in the late hours Friday and Saturday but without a deejay, he said. “It’s not the same effect.” The Waterfront Grille has hired well-known local attorney Bruno Gioffre, now based in Purchase, to see what the owners have to do to get a cabaret license. “Unfortunately we have to get an attorney involved,” Longi said. “You can see the money we have invested here,” he continued, and he doesn’t feel the village is showing a willingness to work with them. They, on the other hand, are willing to abide by any restrictions the village might want to impose on them so they can go forward and do with the location what it was built out for, he said.

With its attractive blue awnings, The Waterfront Grille is located in Port Chester’s new downtown development at 42 Westchester Ave.

Good food and service

While The Waterfront Grille got off to a bad start its first weekend, service has definitely improved since then, and my experience there has been largely positive. On my first dinner visit with four people, we sat in the main dining room with its attractive, comfortable booths. We had the Asian Lettuce Wraps ($9) for an appetizer, four lettuce cups filled with chunks of grilled chicken tossed in sesame sauce with crispy noodles, shredded carrots and roasted almonds. By itself this dish was savory and interesting, and if you wanted even more flavor, peanut and sesame ginger sauces were served on the side. The French Onion Soup ($5) came boiling hot with chunks of bread in the flavorful and not too salty broth topped with lots of stringy gruyere cheese. The crab cake special, an appetizer priced a bit high at $11, brought one crispy delicious crab cake with black olive rings, roasted red pepper strips and a side of green salad served with spicy tartar sauce on the side. Crab cakes (plural), priced at $9, have been added as an appetizer on the dinner menu which was just introduced. The Caesar Salad, romaine lettuce with large house croutons and classic Caesar dressing, was good but not the best I’ve ever had and a bit pricey for its size at $9.50. The Bloody Mary ($8.50) wasn’t tomatoey enough for my palate, but another in our party loved it. On this occasion Rolling Rocks were on special for the bargain price of $2.50. I can definitely rave about the Baby Back Ribs ($25), offered as a special on two recent visits. The rub for the ribs was sweet and yummy and the meat melted off the bone in scrumptious forkfuls. The corn on the cob served with it, however, was inedible—overcooked and starchy. The Fettuccine Alfredo with Chicken ($17) was top notch. Its creamy sauce was buttery but not heavy. I’d never seen Alfredo prepared with

chicken before but found it an excellent combination. The basic pasta dish is $14, an extra $3 to add chicken or $7 for shrimp. The serving size provided plenty for leftovers. What I would describe as warm French bread was served with pretty whipped butter in a small metal container, but it was disappointingly frozen and difficult to spread. Longi said the bread is baked on the premises so is always fresh. Our tab for four came to just under $100 without dessert. On a second visit, where we sat in the smaller dining room, which I preferred for a party of two, I had another special and this, too, was extraordinary--Pistachio Crusted Red Snapper ($23), delicate fish with a yummy crusted coating. I chose to have it served over garlic mashed potatoes instead of the spinach it called for and found this substitution exactly to my liking. The dish also came with Asian vegetables—sliced zucchini, yellow squash and shredded carrots cooked in a delicious buttery sauce. On this occasion we sampled one of the halfpound Angus beef burgers—the Spicy Cajun Burger ($12.50) dusted with blackened spices and topped with Monterey jack cheese. A little too spicy for my liking, the beef was nonetheless exceptional. My partner said he would have preferred the burger, also topped with lettuce, tomato and onion, on a hard roll rather than the soft one it came on, but that’s a matter of personal preference. It was served with a good-sized dish of homemade, fresh-tasting cole slaw (our choice), French fries or sweet potato fries. This time around I bothered to peruse the drink menu and found some interesting ones, selecting a refreshing frozen Strawberry Shortcake ($8) made with strawberries, amaretto and topped with whipped cream and a cherry. There are always 10 beers on tap and, to be adventurous, my partner selected Captain Lawrence, a bitter pale ale made in Pleasantville, and Sam Adams Seasonal, a less bitter pale ale ($6 each), neither to my liking. This time we sampled a dessert from the lovely silver tray the waitress passes around Please turn to page 7R

The Waterfront Grille for viewing. The Chocolate Lava Explosion ($7), a small rich round cake with a liquid center served warm with vanilla ice cream and whipped cream with chocolate sauce drizzled around the plate, was perfect for chocolate lovers—too filling for one person but just right for two. Dessert and coffee comes out on a silver tray as well. Other desserts include two flavors of cheesecake from The Cheesecake Factory, caramel apple pie, key lime pie, pecan pie and sometimes homemade tiramisu and crème brulée. The desserts are on display in a lighted case to the left of the bar. Our dinner for two priced out at $68.72. Service both times was friendly, efficient and accommodating. Servers use a PDA (personal data assistant) for ordering. The device allows the order to go directly to the kitchen where it is printed out. And you do notice the excellent sound system with upbeat music playing in the background.

Menus and recommendations

The dinner menu at Waterfront Grille isn’t a large one and my experience tells me that the specials are always a good bet. However, Longi said, specials that go over well end up on the menu. Longi recommends the Chicken Cordon Bleu (a special), Honey Roasted Glazed Chicken ($22), the ribs, the angus burgers and the steaks ($27 for 16-ounce New York strip to $34 for 22-ounce flame grilled rib eye) which he called “phenomenal” and said “you won’t get anywhere else for the price.” Steaks are served with fresh vegetables and choice of potato. He points to the extensive wine list (mostly from California and Italy), 10 beers on tap and drink menu with popular drinks like martinis (11 different flavors), margaritas and frozen concoctions as well as cocktails like Port Chester Punch (Stoli O, orange juice, pineapple juice and cranberry juice), Orange Breeze and Steamy Kiss and after dinner drinks like Waterfront Cappuccino (Frangelico, Starbucks cream and cappuccino topped with whipped cream and chocolate shavings). There’s a happy hour from 4-7 every day with

Continued from page 4R half-priced well drinks, beer and drink specials and free chips and salsa. Lunch is served daily from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. with many of the same items on the dinner menu at lower prices plus signature sandwiches such as Cajun Chicken ($10), Waterfront French Dip ($11), Portobello and Roasted Pepper ($9) and Chicken Caesar Salad Wrap ($10) and more appetizers such as those on the Late Night Menu. The Late Night Menu is available from 10:30 p.m. to 2 a.m. and includes Waterfront Mini Burger Trio (three mini burgers—original, bacon cheddar and cheeseburger for $10), Waterfront Wings ($7.50), Smothered Nachos ($8), Fried Calamari ($10), Mozzarella Sticks ($7.50) and Fried Cheese Ravioli ($7.50). The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner seven days from 11:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m., the late night menu then kicks in until 2 a.m. The bar is open until 4 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. Longi said The Waterfront Grille went through some growing pains, business grew in June and then slacked off in the summer. It picked up over Labor Day weekend and he’s hoping it will now grow into the fall. He aims to book some more parties in the restaurant’s varied spaces. It can accommodate 25 to 100 people downstairs and still be open to the public. Upstairs the restaurant can handle from 40 to 75 people. Either father or son and sometimes both are always on the premises. Jerry said he takes care of setting up the kitchen and the back of the house and oversees the operation during dinner while son Michael oversees the front of the house and manager Scott Sergiano of Montrose does the hiring, takes care of the computers, is the bar manager and sometimes the expediter in the kitchen. Although the restaurant employs a full kitchen staff, when needed, Michael helps out in the kitchen where he has experience and knowledge he has picked up from chefs over the years. Customers can park in the lot across the street on Westchester Avenue until a building goes up there, in the lot behind Citgo and in the Waterfront at Port Chester parking garage which is convenient for Waterfront Grille customers because they can enter through the movie theater, go down the escalator and take a left into the restaurant through a door which adjoins the two.
