Outdoor dining spots remain a local draw

ven in a suburban, non-tourist community like Rye Town, outdoor eating is a simple pleasure people enjoy when the weather is fine.

Whether it’s on their own deck or patio, at a casual eatery or fine restaurant, dining al fresco makes the experience twice as nice. From April to October—and especially during the summer months—restaurants that provide outdoor seating are definitely in demand.

The outdoor dining experience has been ebbing and flowing in Port Chester and Rye Brook over the last several years with the number of restaurants offering a place to eat outside nearly doubling eight years ago and then leveling off with only subtle additions, deletions and upgrades since then. The phenomenon has caught on thanks to the Port Chester Board of Trustees which has encouraged sidewalk cafés through legislation and because savvy restaurateurs have realized it’s the way to go to increase visibility, business and/or add interest to their establishment. It’s also a way to make room for overflow crowds at smaller eateries which can accommodate many fewer patrons the rest of the year.

For a small community, it’s amazing first of all how many restaurants there are—109 in Port Chester and Rye Brook—and of those how many—26—have an area set up where you can eat outside. That number is bound to increase by next summer once the restaurants within the Waterfront at Port Chester development are open since their management has indicated an interest in providing for sidewalk dining.

All the restaurants that offered outdoor eating last year are doing so in 2004 except one, and one

brand new eatery has just upgraded a pre-existing patio. Over the years a handful of eateries have discontinued offering the outdoor dining experience because of the difficulty of providing enough staffing to serve both their indoor and outdoor venue or because not enough people were eating outside to make it worthwhile.

Some restaurants offer outdoor table service while a number have just placed tables outside for customers who choose to take their food and dine al fresco.

Outdoor dining spots remain a local draw food and meat dishes. In addition, customers can select a lobster from the restaurant’s tank and have it prepared any style.

Some summer specials offered on a recent visit included cold seafood salad, lobster and shrimp cocktail, freshly made Maryland crab cakes, Rigatoni Michael with onion, diced plum tomatoes, pignoli nuts and shrimp in a roasted garlic white wine sauce, chicken on the bone Scarpariello with hot sausage and mixed peppers in a rosemary lemon white wine sauce, oven roasted loin of veal sliced and served over mashed potatoes in a brandy mushroom sauce, pepper crusted salmon served over a bed of spinach in a reduction Dijon mustard sauce and grilled filet mignon served with capers, horseradish and mustard.

For lunch, ¾ pound black angus burgers, a number of wedges such as sausage, peppers, sliced potato and onion with broccoli rabe; Italian combo; and chicken parmigiana; and other sandwiches including turkey club; Cuban pork and hot open steak are on the menu in addition to salads and entrées.

Hours are Monday through Thursday from 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m., Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 11 p.m., Saturday from 5 to 11 p.m. and Sunday from 4:30 to 9:30 p.m.

The deck wrapping around the back of F.I.S.H. at the end of Fox Island Road gives diners a nice view of the Byram River. other desserts. The patio at Café Mirage, the late night eating spot at 531 North Main St., also near the Greenwich border, is a popular outdoor venue in Port Chester. Billed as a seafood deli and fish market, Ebb Tide sells fresh fish and seafood to cook at home or various preparations of seafood for takeout or eating on the premises. A sign set up at the corner of Abendroth and Willett avenues advertises new shell lobsters for $6.99/lb., jumbo lobsters for $7.99/lb. and live crabs for $2.99/lb. Fried shrimp, fish sticks, fish and chips, scallops and calamari; steamed lobsters, shrimp, and clams; and sautéed shrimp, soft shell crabs, scallops, mussels and clams are on the menu as well as daily specials. You can also get seafood sandwiches such as a crab cake burger, fish filet, clam roll or lobster roll; raw oysters and clams; chowders and lobster bisque as well as side dishes like corn on the cob and coleslaw. For the fourth year customers can eat outside at the tiny enclave at the back of Sonora, the nuevo Latino eatery that opened in May 2001 at 179 Rectory St. A deck around the side of the restaurant off Rectory Street is hidden by tall trees and bushes.

Black ceramic pots with a floral design filled with tropical pink flowers ring the ledge of the deck—painted a pretty shade of red—where a total of 16 people can dine at various table setups.

Tables are covered with white cloths and the black metal chairs that surround them have bamboo seats and backs.

In this tranquil setting, reached by entering the front door and walking through the restaurant, you can enjoy Latin food with a French flair. Tapas, literally small appetizers from Spain, have been extrapolated at Sonora to include a wide variety of appetizers. Tapas and ceviches, South American seafood cocktails, are among the specialties at Sonora, where seafood has top billing.

There are tapas on the summer menu from Mexico, Peru, Colombia, Brazil, Argentina, Spain, Cuba, Venezuela and the Dominican Republic. A particularly pleasant plein air dining spot is the wraparound deck at F.I.S.H., short for Fox Island Seafood House. The Mediterranean seafood house opened in September 2002 at the foot of Fox Island Road where other seafood restaurants have existed before. William Rosenberg of Port Chester and Denis Ossorio of Greenwich opened this seafood eatery with its unique nautical décor and a deck that seats 34 for outdoor eating. It also has docks in front so customers can reach it by boat during the spring, summer and fall. The deck wraps around the back of the restaurant and overlooks the Byram River in a tranquil, beautiful spot with lovely homes across the way and boats pulling in and out.

On the ground level, a casual outdoor bar has been set up for boaters or anyone else who may choose to imbibe there rather than at the lovely glass-enclosed bar

inside the restaurant.

Diners eat at white square plastic tables that can be pushed together for larger parties and the same plastic chairs with yellow seats and red metal arms, backs and legs that are used indoors.

Tables are shaded by red and multicolored umbrellas in blue, orange, yellow and green stripes.

The largely seafood menu includes appetizers such as cioppino (steamed shrimp, mussels and calamari in an excellent spicy tomato lobster broth), skillet roasted shrimp, sautéed Maryland crab cakes, crispy Boston calamari, lobster fra diavolo, spicy tuna tempura roll and ahi tuna sashimi served with wakame salad, oysters and clams on the half shell, monster shrimp cocktail and lobster cocktail.

Zataar dusted Alaskan halibut with falafel, hummus, tomato-cucumber salad and tzitziki sauce; paella made with shrimp, mussels, clams, chicken, chorizo, sofrito and saffron rice; slow roasted Tasmanian king salmon with melted leek mashed potatoes, charred lemon asparagus and tomato with mustard vinaigrette; beer battered day-boat cod and chips with celery root slaw and tartar sauce figure among the entrées on the summer menu. During the summer, F.I.S.H. is open seven days for dinner, Wednesday through Friday for lunch and Saturday and Sunday for brunch. Lunch and brunch runs from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., dinner from 5 to 9 p.m. Sunday and Monday, 5:30 to 10 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and 5:30 to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Reservations are a must on weekends.

Another outdoor eating locale that opened two years ago is behind Kiosko Restaurant at 220 Westchester Ave. Two of the round green and light wood tables with matching chairs from inside have been moved outside on a red brick patio around the back of the building which is covered on three sides and open in the back. It is decorated with four large pots of ivy and flowers plus rolling pots and trellises with impatiens and geraniums providing a border from the outside.

Full Mexican and American breakfasts of Huevos Rancheros, Huevos a la Mexicana, Huevos con Chorizo, eggs any style with home fries or on a roll, omelets, pancakes and French toast can be had here as well as all the Mexican favorites including enchiladas, quesadillas, burritos, nachos, fajitas, tacos, sopes, tortas, chimichangas, flautas, molotes, chulupas and tostadas. Seafood and meat entrées, salads and homemade soups are also available.

Besides wine, beer and soda, you can get a variety of refreshing fruit shakes made to order with a milk or water base.

Kiosko is open 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week.

On the other side of town, Coyote Flaco at 115 Midland Ave. serves up some of the freshest Mexican food around on the patio

in front of the tiny restaurant. It has been newly renovated this year and is now enclosed on three sides by an attractive wall of beige and gray bricks. As in the past, the patio is covered by a bright green awning. Seating is at an eclectic mix of chairs and rectangular tables with Aztec design plastic tablecloths as well as at green picnic tables with new beige and subtle green umbrellas.

Flowers and plants in window boxes ring the patio, covering the top of the wall that surrounds this outdoor eating area, and more flowers are planted in containers outside the wall which brighten up the entrance to the restaurant. Trees have been planted in front of the patio along the street.

You can’t top Coyote Flaco’s yummy gazpacho (offered daily in the summer), salmon and shrimp fajitas or just about any of the Mexican specialties offered here.

Rye Brook The best kept secret in Rye Brook and Port Chester is still Mulligan’s Bar & Grill at Doral Arrowwood Resort and Conference Center on Anderson Hill Road, which we discovered five years ago. Here 15 wooden tables and chairs and a long bar with wooden stools are covered by a green and white awning behind the golf shop overlooking the ninth hole of the golf course. The fare includes things like fresh fruit plate, chicken quesadillas, Buffalo wings, chicken fingers, grilled Cajun shrimp, salads such as Caesar, chef and organic with goat cheese, sandwiches, wraps, burgers, turkey sausage and sirloin steak. Vegetarian Delight—a grilled Portobello mushroom with roasted red peppers, fresh basil and melted mozzarella cheese on 9-grain bread—is also popular.

Daily specials feature a different salad, sandwich, entrée and alcoholic beverage every day. On a recent visit the featured drink was a Malibu Sunrise made with coconut rum, grenadine and orange juice. A children’s menu is also available.

Live calypso music is featured Thursdays and soft rock Fridays from 5 p.m. till closing.

Mulligan’s is open seven days a week from 11:30 a.m. until 8 p.m. through October.

The Rye Town Hilton at 699 Westchester Ave. offers casual outdoor dining in a garden setting during limited hours at its Terrace Grill. This large area features lots of beige tables, chairs and umbrellas on a patio surrounded by hedges and flower gardens. Additional seating is provided on a slate veranda a few steps above the patio.

During the warm weather customers of The Club Sandwich, which opened in April 2000 at 7 Rye Ridge Plaza, around the back of the Rye Ridge Shopping Center, have the option of eating outside at one of four square metal black tables with matching chairs.

Two of them are shaded by the sandwich shop’s awning. Sean Quinn of Rye assumed ownership of the local eatery in February.

The Club Sandwich offers a tremendous variety of sandwiches of all types, from simple roast beef on rye to smoked salmon with egg salad horseradish sauce, capers, onions, lettuce, tomato and bacon on a tortilla. The curried chicken salad and brie with scallions, avocado, sprouts and mayo on a croissant is excellent. The gourmet sandwich shop serves Boar’s Head deli meats on its sandwiches and offers nine different choices of bread on which they can be made.

Another eating establishment in the Rye Ridge Shopping Center, Rye Ridge Delicatessen & Restaurant at 126 South Ridge St., has three round silver tables with four silver mesh chairs each out front where customers may consume their takeout orders if they so choose.

Rye Ridge Deli specializes in snappy kosher hot dogs, pickles, potato knishes, huge deli sandwiches and salads. The restaurant also serves breakfast.

Hours are Monday through Wednesday from 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., Thursday and Friday from 7:30 a.m. until 10 p.m., Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday from 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.

The deli will be closing in the fall for a few months to expand into the store next door and renovate.

Up the hill in the shopping center at 200 South Ridge St., Lenny’s Bagels also provides outdoor seating for its patrons.

A mural of Venice is the focal point at the lovely dining spot in a courtyard outside That Little Italian Restaurant in the Byram section of Greenwich.

That Little Italian Restaurant, located just across the river in Byram, Conn., has a beautiful outdoor eating area on a red brick patio in a quiet courtyard behind the restaurant, located at 228-230 Mill St. The patio is situated just outside the windows of the upper portion of this fine Italian eatery and a mural of Venice, similar to others inside, decorates the wall that provides a backdrop to this outdoor venue.

There’s room for eight tables for two in any configuration— square marble-look tables with white plastic chairs covered by sky blue San Pellegrino umbrellas. Besides potted plants, sunflowers and a tall purple variety are planted in beds on two sides of the patio. Window boxes full of pansies and marigolds hang from the green railing that surrounds this lovely haven. Four pretty lamplights hang from the side of the building to provide light once darkness sets in.

In the open air customers may enjoy the restaurant’s excellent array of appetizers, salads, pastas, chicken, veal and seafood dishes plus daily specials. Lobster ravioli, Veal Marsala and ricotta gnocchi come highly recommended.

For lunch there are also specialty pizzas, calzones and sandwiches, the latter served on the excellent homemade bread That Little Italian Restaurant has been known for since it opened in 1980.

As a special, the restaurant is currently offering two large cheese pizzas for $16.95.

Hours are Tuesday through Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. for lunch, Sunday and Tuesday through Thursday from 5 to 9:30 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 5 to 10:30 p.m. for dinner. The restaurant is closed Monday.
