KDYS Streetfeast Alfie Hughes The KDYS is a charity supporting young people since 1971. The KDYS is engaged with over 6,000 young people around the County of Kerry. There are over 100 staff and 500 volunteers involved with the KDYS. On Thursday the 23rd of June, KDYS Killorglin hosted their second Street Feast at their Centre on Lower Bridge St Killorglin. Over 100 people attended on the day. Street Feast is a day of local lunches across Ireland in June, hosted by you and your neighbours. They can be anywhere really - out on the street, in a local park or in your front garden. There are lots of good reasons to have a Street Feast, but it's really just a great excuse to eat great food, celebrate your local community Lots of local businesses were invited as well as community groups, agencies, teachers and the general public. The KDYS wanted to highlight the good work they are doing in the community and also say thanks for all the local support they have received over the years. The event itself was wholly organised by the KDYS Youth Committee who did all the planning and organising. Posters, flyers, and

promotion along with all the decorations and ideas came from them. They supplied Cakes, treats and savoury food on the day as well. The Youth Committee won the Kerry Community Award in 2014 for their efforts in the local area. The support this year from local businesses was overwhelming. Big Bite pizza donated huge family pizzas, Quinlan’s Fish shop gave goujons and chips, Micko’s gave sausages and pizzas. Both the Harmony and Dream Chinese restaurants gave large portions of appetizers and tasty bits. Jack’s bakery gave sweet treats and Supervalu and Eurospar gave lots of goodies. Last but not least, Eamonn Sheehan’s butchers donated 80 delicious burgers to make the BBQ a great success. Outside the Centre in the new KDYS Garden, the BBQ and music was great fun along with the free face painting and games. Inside, the Youth Committee had their work on display, showing pictures of them helping the Killorglin Tidy Towns, running Cake Sales and organising Youth Disco’s. Inside and out were fully decorated with balloons and colour. The Spud Mor competition, now in its second year, was held on the day also. Again this could not have been done without the help of Declan Crowley from the Grow It

Yourself (GIY) group. A number of local Spud Growers entered on the day, along with 2 other new categories included this year, the Secondary schools and Primary schools to find the best Spud in Mid Kerry. The Primary schools winner was Scoil Mhuire, Sunhill, Killorglin. ISK School won the Secondary schools category and Alfie Hughes won the independent growers along with the overall Spud Mor. He has said he would be willing to take on the West Kerry champion if they were up for it. We would hope that the Spud Off could be rotated between Mid and West Kerry on an annual basis to bring the communities closer together and just have some great fun. The KDYS would urge schools and community groups to get their spuds planted in the finest Mid Kerry soil by St Patrick’s Day next year and take on West Kerry.
