Surviving Exam Stress: Your Roadmap to Success!
Irene Flannery, Nutritional Therapist

Feeling the weight of impending exams? Whether you've been preparing diligently, or the panic is just setting in, your performance on exam day can make or break your hard work. Although the exams may not perfectly measure academic competence, being prepared is key to success. Stress is a natural response to the demands of sitting exams and you might be surprised to hear that some aspects of the stress response can enhance your ability to solve problems and access learned information quickly. Unfortunately, too much stress and high anxiety levels can stand in the way of getting what is inside your head onto the paper in front of you within the allotted time. Fear not, even if you tend to be a worrier, there is still time for you to prepare yourself for this stressful period and get the most out of the last few weeks of your exam preparation.
Understanding Stress
The human stress response has been with us for as long as we have lived on the planet and is probably the reason why we are still here. However, the threats that triggered us into the “freeze, fight or flight” mode have changed dramatically as has the time we allow ourselves to recover and recuperate between stressful events. Physical stress, such as the nervousness you feel before a big test, is a natural response to the demands of testing. However, excessive physical stress can hinder your ability to perform your best. Other physical stressors including poor sleep, phone addiction, smoking, caffeine and excessive exercise can add to the stress load of preparing and sitting exams. On the other hand, “perceived stress” stems from external pressures and expectations including deadlines and academic competition. In today's fast-paced world, where both types of stressors abound, it's vital to recognize the impact both physical and perceived stress can have on your exam performance and prepare accordingly.
Nutritional Tips for Exam Stress Management
What you eat can significantly impact your stress levels and cognitive function during exams. Incorporating certain nutrients into your diet can help calm your nerves and sharpen your focus. Here are some essential dietary tips to support your stress management efforts:
Magnesium – Nature’s Tranquilizer
Magnesium is often referred to as Nature’s tranquilizer – not the kind that would knock a horse, but interestingly, is abundant in the grass they eat! Magnesium plays a crucial role in relaxation and cognitive function. Incorporating magnesium-rich foods like leafy greens, pumpkin seeds, and almonds into your diet can help alleviate physical stress and promote clearer thinking. Optimizing your magnesium intake can relax tense muscles, dilate blood vessels for easier flow of oxygen to the brain and has a calming effect on neurotransmission, allowing for clearer thinking and rational thinking. Supplements can deliver a more therapeutic dose of magnesium in times of stress and are more bio-available to us in
powder/capsules as magnesium (bis)glycinate and magnesium citrate.
B-Vitamins: Nervous System Support
B-vitamins are essential for a healthy nervous system and energy production, making them invaluable during times of stress. Foods like whole grains, lentils, and lean meats provide a natural source of B-vitamins. Enhance the bio-availability of B vitamins by combining with enzyme-rich salads, steamed greens and watercress to unlock their potential. Like magnesium, our bodies deplete quickly of these nutrients in stressful periods so supplementing with a good quality B-complex would fill any gaps and ensure you are running on a full tank of Bs.
L-Theanine: Nervous System Soother
A lesser-known nutrient, yet one of my favourites, L-Theanine, is responsible for calming and soothing the nervous system without dulling the thought process or causing drowsiness. Best derived from high quality organic green tea which can be further enhanced by adding some lemon balm leaves to the brew. This timely tonic can be consumed hot or cooled, alternating with fresh water throughout the day as hydration is also critical to exam performance and concentration.
Glycine: Sleep and Stress Support
Another amino acid, glycine, plays an important role in the sleep cycle. Sleep allows for recovery and repair after a stress event such as exams and allows the brain to process information making it easier to access and recall when needed. Supplemental glycine is usually formulated as Magnesium (Bis)glycinate because they make the perfect pair. It is also derived from natural food sources such as meat, fish and poultry. Bone broth is an excellent source as the glycine, ready to be absorbed from the liquid stock.
Vitamin C: Adrenal Support
Vitamin C supports adrenal gland function, helping your body cope with both physical and perceived stress more effectively and provides a pick-me-up when feeling exhausted. Also needed for the absorption of iron, of which low levels can be attributed to fatigue and slow-thinking. Snack on fresh fruits and vegetables to ensure you're getting an ample supply of this vital nutrient.
The last thing you want to add to your stress levels is more stress! Junk food, caffeine, stimulants, poor sleep, the news, social media and poor planning are the kind of stressors that can put you at risk of “overload” and anxiety, which will impede your exam performance. Between exams and during down times, take time to recover and repair in a calm and quiet environment. Take advantage of the heightened clarity that comes with a well-managed stress response by preparing healthy wholefood meals, prioritizing a good sleep routine and spend time outdoors in Nature. Add a few drops of essential oil of rosemary in your burner or diffuser when studying to enhance concentration, memory and recall. Remember to prioritize your self-care and stay confident in your abilities. You've got this!

Once Upon a Time in the Southwest

The Maharees Quickstep
-Stockton Herald 28 March 1896
Last Friday week the fishing vessel Quickstep ran upon a reef at Maharees, on the coast of County Kerry, during a gale. She was battered by heavy seas and four of her crew, including her captain, were swept overboard and all were drowned. Subsequently, the boat floated off with three men on board.
Update: Kerry Reporter 04 April 1896
A derelict boat named the Quickstep of Peel (Isle of Man), J. Corkell, Master, has been washed ashore at Loop Head in County Clare. It belonged to the fishing sloop which almost foundered last week off the Maharees, in Tralee Bay, which resulted in the loss of the captain and some of the crew.
(Somebody must have known that three crew members were still on the vessel when she floated away from the Maharees- what happened to her/ them? Maybe the Quickstep sank and the three took to the ship’s lifeboat and were lost somewhere between Kerry and Clare.)
Dynamite blast injures two workers
-Kerry News 01 July 1899
Two labourers named Donnelly met with a very serious accident while engaged in blasting operations in a stone quarry near Waterville. It appears that the dynamite, used for quarrying out the stone, suddenly exploded.
The two men were hurled a considerable distance away by the blast, from where they had been working. One of the men is badly injured about his face and body. It is feared he will lose one of his legs.
Feis Dhaingin uí Chúis / Dingle Feis
-Kerry Reporter 06 June 1906
On Monday last Canon O’Leary presided over a meeting in the Temperance Hall, Dingle. The meeting was called for the purpose of selecting a ‘Coisde Gaoithe’ to organise a feis, which is proposed to be held in Dingle in early September. By way of an explanation at the meeting, Canon O’Leary spent a considerable length of time on the interest that has been aroused in the Irish Language Revival of Feiseanna at various centres throughout the country.
Killarney for sale.
-Kerry Evening Post 07 June 1899
When American millionaire Howard Gould was visiting Queenstown (Cobh) recently his friends urged him to purchase the Muckross estate in Killarney. He discussed the topic at length with them and exhausted ideas as to what the purchase would mean.
Mrs. Gould appears to have taken a greater interest in the property than her husband and expressed a wish that he would purchase the estate which is such a popular resort with Americans.
It would be a small cost to Mr. Gould whose income is believed be more than two thousand pounds a day. (Gould divorced his wife, Catherine Clemmons, ten years later. She was best known as an actress and for her romantic relationship with Buffalo Bill.)
Family gone mad
-Kerry Evening Post 04 March 1899
Intelligence has reached us of an extraordinary occurrence on the border of Kerry and Cork. A few years ago, three unmarried sisters resided at Glencollins in County Cork. In the course of time the three were married. One went to live in Guinequilla (Gneeveguilla?), another settled down in Cordal and the third remained at home.
The sister residing at Gneeveguilla developed symptoms of mental degeneration. Her sister at Cordal went to visit her on hearing the news and she soon became consumed with the affliction. The third sister went to see the other two and she also fell victim to the malady.
The first sister has been conveyed to the Killarney District Lunatic Asylum while the other two are making progress towards a recovery. The disease is believed to be hereditary in the family.
(How did the Kerry Evening Post writer not realise the mistake in Guinequilla?)
Arson attack near Kilflynn
-Kerry Evening Post, 10 October 1863
On Wednesday night last, the house of a farmer named John Horan was maliciously set on fire on the lands of Laccamore, in the parish of Kilflynn. It appears that a small milk room, which was attached to the main house, was set on fire from the outside and burned to the ground.
As a result, the dwelling house took fire from the milk house blaze. Luckily, one of Horan’s sons became aware of the fire and alerted the family. Mr. Horan roused the neighbours and between their efforts they brought the fire under control without any serious damage to the house. From what we learn of this incident there is little doubt that the fire was malicious. The police are investigating the incident, but no arrests have been made yet.
Alleged robbery at Dingle Mills
-Cork Examiner, 12 March 1863
A story which appeared in a recent issue of the Kerry Star about the theft of 30 tons of Indian meal from the Ballybeg Mills in Dingle has been declared untrue. Our correspondent says that everyone in the town and area were amazed to read the story in the paper.
Sub-Inspector of police Mr. Gilpin said it was next to impossible that such a large quantity as 30 tons, or 240 sacks, could have been carried off in one night from the mill. He said no report of such a robbery had been made to him and neither has there been any comment from the mill. (Maybe this was a case of one paper trying to show the unreliability of reports in another paper.)

Well done to our u16 girls who had a great win over Kerins O'Rahillys last night in the North Kerry League Castlegregory/Annascaul: 8-14 Kerins O'Rahillys: 6-13 Annascaul Castlegregory (AC) triumphed over Kerins O Rahillys in Ballyrickard on a Thursday evening, with a final score of 8-14 to 6-13. Maria opened the scoring for AC. The team's goals and points came from Leah, Caoimhe, Saoirse, Keelin, and Lia. AC led at halftime, but Strand Road closed the gap to four points in the second half. The girls then implemented hand-passing skills, which they had been practicing in training, and this helped them secure the win. Aoife, the goalie, had an outstanding game, saving many close calls. It was an excellent team performance, with the girls giving it their all, which earned them a spot in the North Kerry Division 2 Cup final against Abbeydorney. The victory was a testament to
the team's incredible teamwork and unwavering commitment. The players showed great support for one another, always encouraging and working together, and their dedication to training paid off.

Working From Home?
Expand your social circle in Corca Dhuibhne
Grow Remote is an Irish social enterprise whose mission is to make good quality jobs available to everyone, wherever they live - especially applicable to us in Corca Dhuibhne. The organisation helps workers find and thrive in remote jobs while also advocating on behalf of this sector. With more people working and wanting to work this way, there is an increasingly positive impact on rural societies. www.growremote.ie for more information.
Possible downsides of working remotely include isolation, without colleagues next to you to share the load. To combat this, Grow Remote creates regular opportunities for remote workers to socialise and connect with each other. Towns across the country have local chapters with a team of voluntary leaders setting up social events to enable the local network to thrive. Aodán Ó Conaill & Liz Ryan are the Dingle chapter leads, which is one of Ireland’s largest at 110 members, growing steadily since 2021. Other parts of Kerry have chapters too - remote workers can attend any chapter’s events.
The Dingle chapter tries to do something different each month, taking advantage of the brilliant resources here. We create diverse events. Recent highlights: beginners yoga sessions, learning how to make St Bridget’s crosses at Púca café, cheering on the Six Nations Rugby in Paddy Bawn’s, having the craic in Neligan’s with Irish set dancing, making pendants with Celtic Coastal Creations and a killerpool event in Dingle Bridge House! We love working with local organisations and businesses - especially newer and small ones & we welcome collaboration ideas, especially in the outdoor pursuits area.
So, if you (or someone you know) is working without the perks of a traditional workplace, or if there’s someone who is curious if remote work is for them, encourage them to come along to our next event. It’s an informal affair, people get as involved as they want & there are usually new faces at each gathering. We know it’s hard to start something new - if you’re slow to sign-up, know that you will be welcomed in and handled with care.
We have a Whatsapp group for the Dingle network which is the best way to connect and hear first about events. To join: scan the QR code with your camera.
To see our upcoming events, go onto www.eventbrite.ie and search for ‘Grow Remote’ in ‘Dingle’. Bígí linn!

FÉILE NA BEALTAINE. The windy conditions did not allow for all the traditional hilltop fires to be lit on Thursday May 1st but the jam packed programme which followed over the entire weekend certainly was equal to if not better than the previous 30 Féiles here in the peninsula. What a wonderful group of volunteers are involved in putting such an amount of work, time, planning and research into the Féile. Comhgairdeachas libh go léir .
CYCLE EVENT. The Annual Ride Dingle Cycle Events again attracted around 2,000 participants who really enjoyed the favourable weather conditions with around half completing the full 120km challenge over the Conor Pass/Camp Circuit. Well done to the Dingle Cycling Club who initially started this event and who handed the organising over to the Elite Event Management group when the participating numbers became too much to handle for the local club volunteers. A sizeable amount of the funds collected will again be returned to the local clubs and group who helped with stewarding and food stops on the day.
UPCOMING EVENTS. The Annual Darkness Into Light Walk/Run in aid of Pieta House is scheduled for 4a.m. on Saturday May 10th over the 5km Slí na Sláinte Route. Participants can register online in advance with full details on www.darknessintolight.ie. Most of us will by now have known or heard of families effected by depression and suicide so it's worth the effort

Féile na Bealtaine
Ba mhaith le fhoireann Féile na Bealtaine ár mbuíochas a chuir in iúl do gach éinne a chabharaigh linn in aon slí - beag nó mór, an Fhéile a reachtáil i mbliana.
Is féile pobail í FnaB, bunaithe le fada ar co-oibriú ó gach ceanntar don leithinis. Gan an tacaíocht seo, ní fiu faic é. Tá súil againn go bhfuil daoine bródiuil as agus go mbaineann siad sult as.
Dóibh siúd a bhí taobh thiar don mórshúil agus iad san a ghlac páirt ann - go raibh maith agaibh. Ní dheanfaimid dearmad ar an draíocht a bhí timpeall an baile maidin Dé Domhnaigh.
Táimíd buíoch dos na daoine a ghlac páirt sna h-imeachtaí, a chabhraigh iad a chuir ar stáitse agus don lucht féachana a thainig amach chun freastáil orthu. Buíochas dóibh siúd a thóg isteach sinn chun imeachtaí a chuir os comhair an phobail - agus gnóanna eagsúla ó gach ciúinne don Leithinis. Ár mbuíochas spiasiálta do Radio na Gaeltacht a thugann gach cabhair i gconaí. Go raibh maith agat do West Kerry Live a sheasann linn gach bhliain.
Fáiltimíd i gconaí roimh tuairimí an phobail conas an fhéile a fheabhsú. Bigí ag pleanáil do bhliain do Fhéile na Bealtaine 2026. Ar scáth a chéile a mhaireann na daoine.

Coiste Fhéile na Bealtaine would like to sincerely thank everybody in Corca Dhuibhne for their amazing support during the days of the festival last weekend. FnaB is truly a festival of the people, for the people and by the people. Without support from the community it simply would not work. This festival is the collective effort of groups and individuals from all corners of Corca Dhuibhne - It is something we should all feel part of and proud of. It is a festival that entertains, informs, challenges and provokes us. A festival that shows the best of the place we call home, all done on a voluntary effort from across the peninsula. For the incredibly creative and colourful Street Theatre parade - The Phoenix Cinema and Film - we would like to thank the co-ordinators, prop makers, designers, creators, school children, teachers, parents, street stewards, Gardaí, and all those on the streets who came out to support it. You created an unforgettable splash of colour on our streets, it will live in the memory and is a reminder of the wild imaginations that exist all around us.
To everybody who performed, attended or assisted at an event, to all the art exhibitors, to all the speakers, thank you. To all the individuals, families, businesses and sponsors that support us financially, we greatly appreciate your help. To all the venues and people who run them, we could not have events without you. To all who helped in kind, with time, materials, food, accommodation, ideas, encouraging words - our gratitude! To our partners and children, thanks for your patience. We look forward to your continuing support, ideas, suggestions for Féile na Bealtaine 2026. It is your generosity of spirit and imagination which makes Féile na Bealtaine so special.
Finally to all the various deities, pagan or otherwise, who claim credit for sunshine - well done, lets be having more of you!

Caint ag Oscailt Féile na Bealtaine: 1
Bealtaine
2025
Boscó Ó Conchúir
Ónóir mhór dom is ea Féile Bhealtaine na bliana seo a oscailt mar go raibh aithne mhaith agam ar bhunaitheoir na Féile seo, Mícheál Ó Fainnín, ó bhí sé ina dhéagóir. Bhíodh sé, an uair sin, i gceantar Shéipéal na Carraige ag cleachtadh a chuid Gaelainne. Ní hamháin san, ach tá seanaghaol agam leis trí Mhuintir Uí Ghairbhia Bhaile an Chóta. Ní haon iontas, mar sin, go bhfuilim -- chomh maith leis na mílte eile go raibh aithne acu air -- bródúil is mórtasach as a shaol is a shaothar.
File, fealsúnaí agus dochtúir leighis ab ea Mícheál. De bharr an mheoin aigne a ghabhann leis na gairmeacha sin, thuig sé an gá is an riachtanas a bhí le Féile dá leithéid seo a bhunú. Tharla sé sin i 1994. Óna thaithí féin mar fhile agus mar dhochtúir leighis, thuig sé gur gairm leochaileach í gairm an fhile is an ealaíontóra – gairm a bhíonn ag cruthú, ag ceapadh is ag cumadh san uaigneas agus go haonarach; gairm a bhíonn ar thóir na háilleachta, na foirfeachta is na fírinne – is gairm ar leith í. Is fuirist lagmhisneach a chur ar na daoine misniúla san. Bíonn gá acu le tacaíocht, le haitheantas, le moladh, le hardán, le comhluadar, le pobal. Déanann féilte dá leithéid seo iarracht an tacaíocht san a chur ar fáil dóibh. Mar sin, ag ócáidí mar seo, déanaimid ceiliúradh ar chumas, ar bhua, is ar ábaltacht ár n-ealaíontóirí agus léirímid ár mbuíochas dóibh. Molaimid Mícheál as deis a thabhairt dúinn, anseo sa Daingean, an tacaíocht sin a chur ar fáil dóibh.
Toisc go mbíonn gá ag ealaíontóirí le spreagadh agus le hinspioráid, roghnaigh Micheál lár Chorca Dhuibhne mar láthair don bhFéile seo. Ar an láthair seo, tá ealaíontóirí an lae inniu timpeallaithe ag ealaín ár sinsear: séipéilín Ghallarais, Cill Mhaolchéadair, clocha ogham, clathacha cloch, clocháin, scríbhinní ár n-údar, miotas agus béaloideas ár n-oidhreachta. Táid timpeallaithe ag áilleacht agus rithimí an dúlra – teacht is imeacht na taoide, éirí is luí na gréine. Cé hé an duine ná spreagfadh san iad?
Chun cur leis an spreagadh san go léir, roghnaigh Mícheál an t-am seo bliana, Bealtaine, chun Féile chultúrtha a eagrú – am nuair atá an dúlra ag dúiseacht agus ag teacht chun beatha, nuair atá ‘na caoire ag breith na n-uan, na héin ag déanamh nead, is an lá ag dul i bhfaid’, nuair atá spleodar chun na beatha agus chun fáis ar gach rud, nuair atá dóchas is áthas san aer. Is spreagadh iontach chun na cruthaitheachta iad san don ealaíontóir, don gceardaí, don saor, don bhfeirmeoir is don iascaire – do chách.
Tá ár mbuíochas ag dul don gcoiste a d’eagraigh Féile na bliana seo agus a chuir clár leathan os ár gcomhair agus do na hurraitheoirí a chabhraigh. Is é ár nguí gur fada a leanfaidh lorg Mhíchíl ar an bhFéile seo.
Bainigí taitneamh as an bhFéile. Fógraím an Fhéile ar oscailt.

Bhí mé i ndóchas ó d'imigh mé thar lear go mbeadh scéalta níos fearr le n-insint agam nuair a thiocfainn ar ais, go háirithe mar a rug Kerry FC an svae leo ar Bhaile Átha Luain an deireadh seachtaine sin, ach is ar éigin a fíoraíodh mo thnúthain leis an gcluiche deireanach ó shin.
Fuair na Ciarraígh an ceann is fearr ar UCD an tseachtain seo caite ach roimhe sin b'éigean dóibh cur suas le trí theip. Is dócha nach miste trí theip agus dhá bhua chun tréimhse réasúnta a thabhairt air, ach fós féin is ar éigin atá siad slán ó bhun an tábla ar bhonn difríocht na gcúl. Is mór a chosain cinneadh na Sraithe a phléigh muid sa cholún deireanach orthu! Luke Palmer a scóráil an céad chúl in aghaidh Átha Luain, agus gan ceathrú uaire féin imeartha, agus b'e an tosach céanna a chuir an dara scór thairis Matt Connor i gcúl na gcuairteoirí roimh leath-ama. Ryan Kelliher a chuir an cluiche thar chumas Átha Luain gar don deireadh, an chéad uair aige ag imirt os comhair an tslua baile ó chéad oíche na Sraithe.
Oíche Aoine an Chéasta bhíú an turas fada go Tír Chonaill le déanamh, ach má dhein thángadar abhaile gan aon rud le maíomh acu, ainneoin cúl le Sam Aladesanusi a chothramaigh na scóranna tar éis cic éirice le Gavin Hodgkins, agus chuaigh siad chun cinn go gairid ina dhiaidh sin trí chic cliste ag Daniel Okwute. Ach tháinig cúl ó Max Hutchinson, cic éirice eile, le Dara McGuinness an uair seo, agus cúl i mbun am chúiteamh ghortaithe leis an bhfear céanna salach ar aon seans ar na pointí ar an mBealch Féich.
Luan Cásca an cheád iarracht eile, sa bhaile imn aghaidh Fhánaithe Chóibh, agus Barry Coffey a thosaigh slad na gcuairteoirí ;le cúl luath agus ceann eile roimh an briseadh. Cheap an lucht tacaíochta go raibh cúl bainte amach ag cic cúinne Joe Adams, ach níor aontaigh an réiteoir ná a chúntóirí. Cé gur cosúil ag scrúdú na físe ina dhiaidh sin gur cúl ceart a bhí ann, níl dul thar an cinneadh le linn an imeartha.
Ar ais go Cill Mhantáin ansin, agus mí-ádh arís, Danu Kinsella Bishop ag scóráil laistigh d'ocht nóiméad, agus Cian Doyle trí nóiméad níos déanaí.
Bishop arís go liuath sa dara leath, agus ba chosúil an cluiche bheith caillte cheana féin. Ach bhí Kelliher fós ann le dhá chúl sóláis a bhain amach sa deich nóiméad deireanach.
San Ardchathair an Aoine dar gcionn, bhí sciorta den ádh a bhí in easnamh le tamall orthu - nó b'fhéidir go mba chirte a rá go raibh scil TimOliver Hiemer - ina chabhair mhór dóibh, os é a shábháil cic éirice i gceachtar leath, agus is lena chomhleitheid cice a bhain an captaen Sean McGrath an lá dóibh in UCD.
Bímis i ndóchas go mbeidh an Bainisteoir nua, Colin Healy, in ann feabhas a chur ar an torthaí go tapaidh. Tá scil ag na himreoirí, ach níl siad i gcónaí á léiriú mar is cóir.

Solar Systems
Imeachtaí Thobar Dhuibhne / Tobar Dhuibhne’s events
Tom Kennedy
• Babhta Cuileachtan sa bheár bheag i dTigh Kruger gach Luan @ 12in
Solar..panels or tubes, what's the difference? Well they both provide hot water when heated by the sun’s energy, thus saving you energy, be it oil, gas or electricity.
• Ciorcal Comhrá - gach Céadaoin ag a 11:00 in Áras Bhréanainn, Baile an Fheirtéaraigh. Fáilte roimh chách // all welcome.
• Tae & Plé gach Déardaoin @ 12:00 sa Hare’s Corner le Dúchas an Daingin
Tomhais na coicíse
A solar system will save up to 70% of your annual hot water bill. When it comes to tubes versus panels, the tubes are marginally more efficient than panels, but realistically the difference is small, especially when we have had such a great spell of sunshine. There is another "solar system" known in the trade as "Thermodynamic" this is a solar panel that works in the dark. Yes with no sunshine, you ask how!
Ní chuireann sé aon cheist lena ghlór ach, faigheann sé freagraí go leor.
Cad is ea é?
Cuir freagra chugainn @tobardhuibhne ar Instagram, ar WhatsApp (087 376 9538) nó ar r-phost!
Well the answer is simple really, it's not a solar panel it's a heat pump. The way it works is a panel is fitted to your roof which is connected to a unit and cylinder in your hot press. This is a compressor similar to what's found in a fridge, this unit pumps a refrigerant gas into the panel where it heats due to the fact that the gas has a very low boiling point of about -25 Celsius so this hot gas comes back into the unit, where the gas is compressed to make it hotter, the heat is then transferred to create heat. However, this unit is dependant on electricity to operate so while saving money on heating hot water it does so at a cost.
Freagra & buaiteoirí an eagráin seo chaite: Fileann sé ón sliabh de ló is d’oíche, ach ón machair mín, ní fhileann sé choíche
Take for example a typical family home with 3 to 5 occupants, costs on average about €1,500 to €2,000 per year to heat, of which about a 1/4 to 1/3 of this is hot water, so a typical hot water bill for a family of 5 is somewhere in the region of €450 to €650 a year.
Freagra: Macalla
Faighte ag: Marion Uí Bheaglaoich
A solar system for a family of 5 can cost anything from €4,000 to €5,500 supplied and fitted, giving them a yearly saving of approx €350 to €500 and when you take into account the rising cost of energy, a system can pay for itself in 5 to 10 years.

Ginger and Lemongrass Beef
Skewers, Pickled Vegetable Salad
Mark Murphy - Dingle Cookery School

Take a little time to mix all ingredients together and marinate the beef ahead of time will allow all of the flavours to develop. You will love the heat from the chilli, ginger and turmeric and then the lemongrass and lime will balance everything and bring such a lovely freshness to the beef. Try these in the barbeque if you get a chance. I have included an easy pickle recipe here that can be used for so many ideas.
Serves 4
Ingredients for the skewers
1-inch piece of ginger, peeled and diced
3 lemongrass stalks, out layer removed, finely chopped
1 red chilli, seeds removed and finely chopped
1 lime, zested and juiced
1 shallot, diced
½ inch piece of fresh turmeric, sliced
1 tsp. oyster sauce
dash of dark soy sauce
pinch of brown sugar
800g sirloin steak cut into large dice
dash of oil for the pickled vegetables
150ml water
100ml rice wine vinegar
50g sugar 1 shallot, sliced
2 spring onions, sliced
1 carrot, peeled and cut into thin strips
¼ head of Chinese cabbage, shredded handful of green beans, or mange tout, sliced
Method
For the skewers (if using wooden skewers, soak them in water for 30 minutes or so)
Add the ginger, lemongrass, chilli, lime juice and zest, shallot and turmeric to a pestle and mortar or a blender. Blend this to a fine paste. Put the paste in a bowl, mix in the oyster sauce, soy sauce and sugar. Add the beef and mix well until the beef is coated. Allow this to marinate for at least 1 hour but if you have time, leave it overnight.
Once ready to assemble, place the beef and the marinade generously on the skewers.
To pickle the vegetables (this can be done the day before if needed)
Add the water, vinegar and sugar to a pot, bring all this to a boil. Place all the vegetables in a jar or a bowl, pour the liquid over the vegetables. To cook the beef
Heat a griddle pan or a large pan. Once hot add a little oil and then add the skewers, brown on each side for about a minute or so, cook for about 6-7 minutes.
Divide the pickled vegetables between 4 plates, place some of the skewers to the side and serve.
Bain taitneamh as!

To Do List

What have I been doing
For all of my life?
I planned
To list important tasks
Not let them slip away
I was going to be so organised
I was going to make a start
Bullet points
Would be commandments
Inscribed upon a chart
I spitballed and I brainstormed
And my bloated schedule grew
The list grew ever longer
And the evening shadows too
And now it’s too dark and late
To read or write
And like this list
Woe is me!
For I am undone

Message from Fr Michael Moynihan
Just over two weeks ago Pope Francis died. A man of prayer. A man of faith who lived his life inspired by the values of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. He worked for peace, and he reached out to those who lived on the margins of society. He continued working to the very end. May he rest in peace. By the time you read this the Catholic Church will most likely have a new pope. We pray that God will bless him and inspire him as he leads the Church in a world where faith is seen more as an option than a way of life. Much has been said and written about the life and work of Pope Francis. His reflections on family were very simple yet very effective. His great advice to families remain a powerful piece of wisdom. The reflection went as follows - “If families can say these three things, they will be fine. ‘Sorry,’ ‘excuse me,’ ‘thank you.’ How often do we say ‘thank you’ in our families? How often do we say ‘thank you’ to those who help us, those close to us, those at our side throughout life? All too often we take everything for granted!” As humans we don’t like to admit when we have done something wrong. Pride has a tendency to drive wedges in our families that are often never resolved. We can hold a grudge for 50 years and never give it up, always accusing another person of the wrongdoing and not admitting any fault. What good does that do! How many families could be reunited if one or both of the parties involved simply said, “sorry,” even if the incident was decades ago? We could spend the remainder of our lives as a united family, instead of a divided one. Too often we don’t ask permission for anything and this can put a strain on relationships in the family. We can get in the “take” mindset and simply take whatever we see, without any thought to the needs of other people. By asking permission before hand, it can eliminate the need to say “sorry” later on. Saying “thank you” is very important. To be able to offer thanks, to be able to praise the Lord for what he has done for us: this is important! How many times do we say ‘Thank you’ in our family, our community, and in the Church? How many times do we say ‘Thank you’ to those who help us, to those close to us, to those who accompany us through life? Often, we take things for granted! This also happens with God. It is easy to approach the Lord to ask for something, but to return and give thanks is also important.
The true hallmark of a Christian is that we realise everything is a gift! All that we see around us has been given to us by God, most especially our
families! Pope Francis invites us to reflect on our family relationships and consider ways we can help repair any damage so that the family can remain a strong pillar of society.
A word of congratulations to the children who received their First Holy Communion on Sunday last and those who will be receiving their First Holy Communion in the coming weeks. A word of sincere thanks to their class teachers and all those in the school who helped prepare the children for receiving their First Holy Communion. Thanks also to the families that continue to live and pass on the faith. The home is where the seeds of faith flourish. Through family prayer and attendance at the sacraments the children will continue to grow in faith and knowledge of God. A faith that gives meaning, value and direction to their lives. It is not an easy task to pass on the faith, but it is an important one. It is often through love of family that children come to know of God’s love for them.
In this month of May we are encouraged to pray the rosary each day. In St Mary's Church Dingle, Rosary for the Month of May will be recited at Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto (inside the convent gate) from Monday to Thursday at 6.00pm and Friday and Saturdays after the 6.15pm Mass and each Sunday at 7.00pm. Rosary will also be recited at Lispole Grotto every evening at 8.00pm. Fáilte roimh chách.
The fine weather makes the countryside and the scenery even more beautiful. I hope that you get to enjoy the wonder of Gods presence in the world of nature.
- Fr Michael

The Sacred Isle
Belief and Religion in Pre-Christian Ireland le Dáithí Ó hÓgáin
foilsithe ag
Con Collins Press 1999

Thoroughly researched and expertly presented, this book is about the religious ideas and practices of pre-Christian Ireland. The author has successfully grappled with the problem of interpreting the early literature of Ireland to establish the beliefs and practices of this ancient culture. He has also drawn on the expertise of archaeologists to describe this elusive and fascinating subject. The work commences with the earliest known settlement in Ireland around 7,000 BC and moves along to the druids with their teachings, practices and rituals to the triumph of Christianity.

Is diail an aimsir atá gafa chugainn agus níl aon chómhartha droch aimsire gafa chugainn ach oiread. Má leanann sé agus níl aon chomhartha ná go ndéanfaidh, beidh daoine ag guí beagán báistí ghabháil chugainn.
Bhí chosanáirde ar Trump ach baineadh barra-thuisle as le déanaí nuair a bhí sé ag moladh thuairisc eacnamaíochta gur baolach gur ceann mí-cheart lochtach é. Tá sé buailte fé do nó trí le Uachtarán na hÚcráine agus bogadh beag tagtha. Níl aon chuimhneamh ag Putin ar éirí as an gcogaíocht óir tá straice mór don Úcráin a éileamh aige. Ní fiú faid do coise briathra Putin agus mura n-éiríonn Trump chuige, rúd na fuil sa bhféachaint, leanfaidh sé. Is baolach go bhfuil an iomarca cogaí sa domhan, stáit san Aifric agus sa chian oirthear éirithe dtí a chéile agus an Ind agus an Phacastáin suaite de bharr ceannasaíocht ar Kashmir. Bhuaileadh cogadh domhanda ar maidin. Ní ró fhada a sheasódh sé ach is beag a bheadh fágtha sa domhain ina dhiaidh. Tá súil le Dia agam go bhfuil aontas, ciall agus sánas chugainn.

Sea tá na cliuichí caide agus iomána fé lán tseoil le seachtainí. Is dócha gur é bua foireann caide na Mí ar Bhleá Cliath an ceann ba mhó. Ghnóthaigh Eoghan Frayne na Mí aon phoinnte déag. ‘Sea buadh gan choinne ar Bhleá Cliath ach glac leis ná fuil siad as an áireamh fós. Go leor ag tuar gur iad Tír Chonaill a bhéarfaidh an lá leo. N’fheadar, seans go raghaidh siad an- ghairid ach ní fheicim conas a bhearfaidis an lá leo.
Bhuaidh Luimneach ar fhoireannn maith iomána Phort Láirge. Is iontach an sólás atá ag baint le cluiche maith iománaíochta.
Bhuaidh Ciarraí go bog ar an gClár i gCraobh sinsir caide na Múmhan an Domhnach seo caite. Bhíodar go mór chun tosaigh le cheithe bháide sa chéad leath agus sa dara leath tugadh imreoirí eile isteach le sos a thabhairt do cuid do imreoirí Chiarraí, fuair an Clár roinnt scóranna ach bhí Ciarraí 4 bháide chun cinn ortha sa deire. Dhein Dáithí Ó Clúmháin scrios, fuair sé 2-5 agus bhí Seán Ó Sé ar fheabhas faid a bhí sé ar an ngort, O-9 sa chéad leath- agus bhí Pól Geaney ar fheabhas, an Conchúrach agus Brian Ó Beaglaoi. Bhí gach imreoir eile ag saothrú go cliste ó thús deire.
Bhuaidh an Ghaillimh ar Mhaigh Eo i graobh Chonnacht ach bhí Gaillimh go mór chun cinn sa chéad leath- ag imirt leis an ngaoth. Sa dara leath tháinig Maigh Eó suas leo ach n’fheadar cén spearaídí a bhuail Maigh Eo. Bhí scata caoi acu le scórana a gnóthú, ach chasaidís siar agus bhuailidis an chaid amach, bhí sé do-chreite- útamáil gan deallramh.
Dá gcuiridís gach caid dtí Rian Ó Donchú bheadh an lá leo ach ní shin a rinneadar.
Féile
Bhí Féile na Bealtaine ag teacht leis an aimsir, ar fheabhas. Bhí iliomad sár-ghníomh ann. Ní fheaca an oiread san rudaí ach bhí a bhfeaca ar fheabhas. Is diail an fónamh atá ar an an gcór. Chuirfidís sólás ar do chroí. Bhí cur i láthair ag an sár bheileadóir Máire Breatnach le tacaíocht ó Mick O’Brien agus Noreen O’Donoghue, ní chloisfeá biorán ag titim, ach ceol uaibhreach ar feadh beagnách dhá uair a chloig., Chuir Tomás Ó Lúing a raibh i láthair fé gheasa an bhainne agus na hainmneacha a theann leis agus le cistí cuanachacha. Níl aon teora le Tomás. Ní dúirt sé dada fé bainne a dearmad ‘sé sin Bainne na gClog. Is dócha gur mheas sé go raibh a dhóthain déanta aige. Deich as Dheich. Gach a bhí ag éisteacht le Cormac Ó Beaglaoi i ngáirdíní an Dísirt maidin Domhnaigh, bhíodar fé dhraíocht. Agus éinne a chonac na drámaí beaga a chur aisteoirí óga le chéile ag ceardlanna Mhícheál ó Cinnéide á léiriú i Halla na Feothanaigh acu ar an Aoine, bheadh fhios aige nach baol don gcéad glún eile d’Aisteoirí Bhréanainn. Bualadh bos dos na healaíontóirí a chuir iontaisí rómhainn ar fuaid an bhaile, iad lán de chumas agus d’éagsúlacht, mar shampla uiscedhathanna Mick Davis, obair chopair Ken Bolger agus pictiúir le Áine Ní
Chíobháin. Tháinig uaigneas orm ag dul suas tríd chlós na bhfíodoirí dtín tríú urlár, ag cuimhneamh ar Lisbeth Mulcahy, an té a bhunaigh an spás seo agus a rinne an oiread san chun cúrsaí ealaíona a chur chun cinn sa dúthaigh. Sí bhainfeadh sásamh as an dea-aimsir agus an dea-ghiúmar a bhí le sonnrú i ngach áit.
Is diail an bheartaíocht atá á dhéanamh ag an Dr. Peadar Ó Fionnáin agus a choiste, bliain i ndiaidh bliana, iad go léir ar fheabhas. Molaim go hard iad. Tá cúinne acu do na haon duine.
Sásta
Tá an feirmeoir an- shásta leis féin coitianta. An chaora, an t-uan luath, an mhairt agus na huibhe cearc, iad go léir an- shásúil. Féach ar sin.

Is annamh a bhíonn an t-éan seo, a bhíodh forleathan tráth i gCorca Dhuibhne i rith an tsamhraidh, le fáil anseo a thuilleadh. Ba mhaith linn fái l amach fé aon cheann acu a bhíonn sa cheantar. Ní bhíonn radharc orthu de ghnáth, ach tá glaoch an traonaigh an-éagsúil chun go dtabharfaí é fé ndeara ach é a chloisint. Is féidir sampla de seo a chlos ach ' corncrake call ' a chuardach ar YouTube.
This bird, which was once common in West Kerry in summer, is rarely found here anymore. We would like to know of any which may visit the area. They are seldom seen but have a very distinct call, a sample of which can be heard by searching ' corncrake call ' on YouTube.
