Bone Appétit for Stronger Skeletons

Osteoporosis is a debilitating disease, which literally means “porous bone” — whereby the density and quality of bone are diminished. As bones become more porous and fragile, the risk of fracture is greatly increased. The loss of bone occurs silently and progressively, often with no symptoms until the first fracture occurs. Osteoporosis is now diagnosed at earlier ages and its precursor osteopenia is increasingly seen in young adults in their twenties and thirties. Approximately one out of three women over 50 will have a fracture due to osteoporosis, as will one out of five men over 50. Although genetic factors largely determine the size and density of your bones, lifestyle, nutrition, regular exercise and avoiding smoking and excess alcohol also play a key role. At every stage of life, a nutritious, broad diet promotes strong, healthy bones. This includes eating enough calories to sustain your frame throughout your life, moderate protein intake, healthy fat as well as vitamins D and K and minerals like calcium, magnesium, zinc, and boron. In childhood and adolescence, proper nutrition helps to build peak bone mass (maximum bone density, usually attained in the early 20s), thereby reducing vulnerability to osteoporosis later in life. This is not to say that there are not measures available to older adults — but puberty is the optimum time in our lives to build great bones! Restrictive diets, fizzy drinks, caffeine and junk food, most associated with the teenage years, are a recipe for poor bone strength and inhibit the absorption of bone-building nutrients at this critical time of growth.

That said, attention to bone health is vital again during midlife, particularly for women. The sharp drop in oestrogen during menopause accelerates bone loss — up to 10% can be lost in the first five years post-menopause. This makes women particularly vulnerable to fractures in later life. Men, by contrast, lose bone more gradually, but by their seventies, their rate of loss can match that of women, especially if testosterone levels are low or other risk factors are present. Supporting bone health in midlife and beyond is key to staying active and well into older age.

Most of the nutrients needed for bone strength are dependent on healthy fats to aid their absorption and assimilation into the body. A diet that includes nuts, seeds, oily fish, olives, avocado and good quality oils help build and preserve bone integrity. For those who have had a fracture, it aids recovery and reduces the risk of having another fracture. Dietary factors that contribute to osteoporosis include low calcium intake, excess sodium and phosphorous (found in fizzy drinks), high protein diets and trace mineral deficiencies. High protein diets, strongly encouraged for weight-loss and body building, need to be reviewed to ensure the long-term health of our skeletal frame is not compromised by the short-term gains of these types of diets.

There is inconsistent evidence that the pH of body fluids plays a role in mineral loss from our bones. It has been said that bone loss, as well as other diseases, occurs when the body is too acidic — mainly from eating too much meat, dairy, processed foods and refined sugars. While the debate rages on, it is worthwhile to note the words of one great physiologist, Homer W. Smith, who wrote:

“It is no exaggeration to say that the composition of the body fluids is determined not by what the mouth takes in but by what the kidneys keep: they are the master chemists of our internal environment. When, among other duties, they excrete the ashes of our body fires, or remove from the blood the infinite variety of foreign substances that are constantly absorbed from our indiscriminate gastrointestinal tracts, these excretory operations are incidental to the major task of keeping our internal environment in an ideal, balanced state.”

(From Fish to Philosopher, 1953)

His theory ties in with ancient Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), which connects bone health to kidney health. Although he does not allude to TCM in any of his research, it is interesting that this and much more recent research demonstrates that nutrients which support the smooth running of our kidneys are the same nutrients that promote bone strength. And conversely, foods that are taxing on the kidneys are associated with increased risk of bone disease.

Sea vegetables, tofu, green leafy vegetables, broccoli, cabbage, kale, sprouts, sesame and pumpkin seeds provide more nutrients for bone health than any other natural wholefood. Not only are they rich in calcium, they also provide boron, magnesium and vitamin K. Our bones are made up of minerals we get directly from land and sea plants — or indirectly from the animal products we eat that feed on the same. It makes sense that these are more easily derived straight from the source rather than eating our way through the animal kingdom in order to get a good supply.

It is worth mentioning that bone broth, made from the long simmering of animal or fish bones in liquid, provides an easily assimilated mineralrich supply, as the minerals from the boiling bones are leached into the water over time. Other nutrients include collagen, vitamin C and omega-3, which allow for flexibility and elasticity to be maintained in bone tissue. It is easier to break a dried-out, rigid stick than one that can bend and flex when pressure is applied.

Don’t forget your vitamin D, necessary for the absorption of calcium and involved in many functions associated with bone health. Routine testing and appropriate supplementation are necessary at all stages of life — whether you are building bone, maintaining bone or re-building bone again.

Let your own skeleton be a reminder of the strength and support you carry within — and treat it well with a mostly plant-based, mineral-rich diet, regular outdoor exercise and simple lifestyle habits that give you the best chance of staying strong, steady, and healthy for years to come.

CELEBRATIONS Sunday night was a night of celebration in The Railway Tavern, when Local Campman PJ Crean, London Kerryman of the Year 2024 was honoured in his home place.

The London Kerryman Association awarded the Kerryman of the year in recognition of PJ’s lifelong commitment and support of Kerrymen, women and families in London and said that his great work has impacted on countless lives over the years.

A framed copy of the Minutes of the Formation Meeting of Camp Muintir na Tire, dated 11th March 1958 was made to PJ by his sister Ann. This document was signed by their late father John P Crean, who was the inaugural Chairman of the first guild of Muintir na Tire elected in the Parish. John was like PJ, a dedicated community man.

And behind every successful man is a good woman and PJ’s wife Bernie was presented with a bouquet of flowers and PJ’s 34 years successful career with British Rail was also marked with a beautiful cake. Congratulations PJ, you have done us all proud in Camp and in Kerry.

OBITUARY Dr. Sean Murphy, of Riverside, Oakpark, Tralee and formerly Garrahies, Camp, died peacefully in the tender care of Our Lady of Fatima nursing home on 14th April. Beloved husband of Margaret and dear brother of Anne Moloney and the late Padraig, Seamus, Tom (Tomás), Maureen, Joan, Peggie and Brid.

Sadly missed by his loving family, his brothers-in-law Dan Moloney and Frank, sister-in-law Marie, nephews, nieces, grandnephews, grandnieces, relatives and many friends. Dr. Sean was laid to rest in Rath Lawn Cemetery, Tralee. Sympathy is extended to all the family.

The news was received with sadness in his native Camp and all over the country and a momentous few days of reminiscing on the life of a popular and much loved gentleman ensued as local and national media turned back the pages of time recalling Sean’s wonderful legacy to Kerry football. Sean was a professional, a Doctor of high standing in the community, a famous footballer, among the best ever to play for his native Kerry and above all a much loved family man.

His niece Elizabeth Moloney and his nephew Darragh Cronin co shared a lovely homily of their Uncle's life.

Over his time in the Kerry jersey, wing-back Sean played in five All-Ireland finals, winning three. His 1959 All-Ireland final masterclass was recognised when he was crowned the footballer of the year in 1959, becoming the first Kerry player to ever receive the accolade.

He has the unique honour of winning All-Ireland medals with his three brothers: A Junior All-Ireland with Padraig in 1949, a minor All-Ireland with Tomás in 1950, and a senior All-Ireland with Seamus in 1959.

At his funeral on Thursday, Camp Community paid their respect in a guard of honour outside the church to Dr. Sean, a Camp Football Legend. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis.

Kerry County Clean Up

The growing success of the county clean up, since it was established in 2012, is evident in the huge voluntary effort all over Kerry and the volume of litter retrieved over the years is indicative of the larger numbers taking part. With 1000’s of people taking part in the 13th annual Kerry County Clean Up, up to 50 tonnes of rubbish was expected to be collected around the Kingdom. This major event is sponsored by KWD Recycling and encourages people to pick up litter in their estates, towns, and villages. Well done to everyone who took part. Go raibh míle maith agaibh!

Baton Charge at Ballyferriter

-The People 20 February 1887

The evictions on the Earl of Cork’s estates were to have been resumed on Wednesday at Ballyferriter. However, the people prepared overnight by breaking up the roads and building stone walls across them. While the police were studying the situation, a crowd of several thousand people assembled. Some were armed with hay-forks and others with sticks, evidently prepared to resist the evictions.

The police decided to return to Dingle and a small crowd followed them cheering but suddenly the police were ordered to charge. In the subsequent physical struggle, a number of men and women were badly knocked about by the police who used their batons freely. The affair has caused intense excitement and serious consequences are feared.

During an interview on Friday, the sub-sheriff stated that there were over 3000 people at Ballyferriter, all of whom were armed with bludgeons, pikes, scythes and sharpened shovels. On Thursday and Friday every shop in the town of Dingle was closed as a protest against the evictions and the police are boycotted.

Highway Robbery

-Kerry Reporter 30 October 1886

On Friday night last a daring robbery was committed on a farmer named Michael Healy of Scartaglen when he was returning from a cattle fair at Knocknagree where he had sold some livestock.

He was accompanied by two men from the fair, on the road, when they were met by two men armed with revolvers.

They ordered Healy to hand over all the money in his possession. This he did and the robbers got away with £5 -10 shillings. Healy reported the incident to the police, but no arrests have been made.

Bring Back the Stones

-Kerry Reporter 02 January 1886

Last week a daring outrage was carried out at a place called Clashatlea, near Ballymacelligott. It appears that a man named Brosnan had erected an outhouse, part of which was built with stones.

The stones had been removed from the dilapidated home of Sylvester Poff who was executed in Tralee jail some two years ago and whose farm still lies derelict.

At about 7 o’clock on the night of the outrage, a party of armed men visited Brosnan’s house and, after breaking some of his windows, they then levelled the newly built outhouse. The men returned to the dwelling house where they fired a few shots and warned Brosnan to return the stones to Poff’s which he did.

War Office Censorship

-Kerry Reporter 26 February 1916

The most Rev. Dr. Mangan wrote a letter to the County Council on January 27th thanking them for a resolution passed regarding the censoring of letters by the War Office.

His Lordship states that he felt his correspondence with the faithful people of the Diocese was entitled to special consideration, even by the War Office, and that the reputation of our people was wantonly outraged by the action of the officers in the War Office in censoring their most private correspondence.

Send me to Dingle

(From the National Archives)

Exactly 200 years ago on 24 April 1825 Thomas Connor, a sub-constable of police in Trabert, petitioned the Lord Lieutenant, Richard Wellesley, at

Dublin Castle, to be transferred from the town of Tarbert to that of Dingle to be close to his elderly mother.

He claimed his late father was a member of the old constabulary police. He also stated that his brother, who succeeded his father in the force, was killed in an accidental ‘fall from a cliff’ whilst in pursuit of two murderers. (He wrote to Wellesley again three weeks later, drawing attention to his mother’s poor health and requesting a response to his application for transfer to Dingle, according to the National Archives.)

Attempted Murder

-Cork Constitution 14 December 1887

This morning three young men of the agricultural class were arrested at Brosna and conveyed by car to Abbeyfeale where they boarded the afternoon train to Listowel.

The men had been arrested in relation to a shooting incident resulting in the wounding of John Curtin and his wife on Sunday last near Brosna. On the prisoners’ arrival in Listowel, it was discovered that the Resident Magistrate was unavailable.

The prisoners then had to wait until 7 o’clock when they were charged by District Inspector Hickey with the above offences. On the application of Sergeant Mc Grath, a remand of 8 days was granted.

Death of a Kerry Student

-Kerry Reporter 21 May 1904

With feelings of deep regret, we record the death of Mr. Thomas Walsh of Glens. The deceased, whose ordination was only a matter of time, spent three years at Killarney Seminary and one year at St. Kieran’s, Kilkenny. He moved from there to Rochester, New York, where he studied for two years. His college career was marked by success, which he pursued with ceaseless application, disregarding the relaxation which his health demanded, and he began to feel unwell.

He was encouraged to return to Ireland which he did before last Christmas but despite the therapeutic nature of his native surroundings and the best efforts of medical skills, he passed peacefully to his eternal rest on Wednesday morning. Before moving to Rochester, he had enjoyed perfect health.

The funeral service began at 2 o’clock on Friday and it was an unusually large one. His internment took place in Saint Mary’s churchyard where the family have erected a new tomb.

Meán Scoil Castlegregory student Kayla O'Neill, who came third in the Department of Education art competition for Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) under the theme 'What sustainability means to me.'

Kayla, a first year student at Meán Scoil, produced a stunningly detailed 3D model of the Maharees for the competition. The aim of the competition was to raise awareness about the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Kayla's project demonstrated several of the SDGs especially, Life on Land, Life below Water, Climate Action , Health and Wellbeing, Sustainable Communities plus more. Kayla was inspired by the breathtaking surroundings of the Maharees as well as the successful conservation work by the local community.

Kayla's model will be on display for the rest of the year at the Department of Education, Marlborough Street, Dublin.

This is a remarkable achievement. Everyone at Meán Scoil, Castlegregory is delighted for Kayla.

Great to see local people taking the opportunity to get involved in business ventures in their own area.

The Business Chamber also welcome the new venture in the original Ó Catháin's Fish Factory in The Wood called Wave Dingle Theatre. The venue will host Irish Music and Dance Shows on Thursdays and Saturday evenings from 7p.m. The Theatre will also be available for other entertainment activities and is another much needed centre in our town.

RIDE DINGLE. The annual cycle event offering a choice of a 55km or 120km challenge takes place this Saturday April 26th starting from the Marina Car Park at 8a.m. Approximately 2,000 brave souls will head off towards Ventry then through lea Head, Ballyferriter, Ballydavid and back to Dingle where the shorter course finishes. Those who come for the longer route then head for the Conor Pass and return to Dingle via Camp and the main road through Annascaul and Lispole.

Some road closures will be in place for short periods with full details on www.ridedingle.com. The cooperation of all road users would be appreciated to ensure the safe running of the event from which several local organisations benefit financially for assisting with stewarding and at food outlets on the day.

TOURISM EVENT. Dingle Peninsula Tourism Alliance will be holding a Networking Event including Tourism Updates and their AGM in the Wave Dingle Theatre in the Wood from 2.30 to 4.30p.m. on Tuesday April 29th. Refreshments will be served by the onsite Factory Restaurant on arrival at 2.30p.m. All tourism related outlets are advised to have a representative attend so we go forward together especially in the uncertain times that have evolved over the past few months. info@dingle-peninsula. ie.or 0669152448.

FÉILE NA BEALTAINE. Another wide ranging programme covering most aspects of the Arts, Music, Cultures, Poetry and Fringe Activities for all age groups are included in Féile Na Bealtaine which runs from Wednesday April 30th to Monday May 5th this year.

The Féile kicks off with the Dingle New Music Choir and Orchestra Concert in the Sceilig Hotel on Wednesday April 30th at 8p.m.

The popular Street Parade returns this year starting from The Pobalscoil Grounds at 1.30 p.m. on the Sunday.

The Féile Office will be located in An Diseart in Green Street and is open for ticket sales from Thursday April 24th with early booking essential due to the huge interest in most events. So with a programme that should have something for everybody we advise our readers to get out there and be part of such a wonderful weekend right here in the Peninsula.

TIDY TOWNS. We wish to thank the volunteers who came out last weekend to help with the annual County Clean Up Day. A total of 25 full bags of litter was collected off our approach roads to town which highlights the selfish approach that some people take to disposing of packaging from food items consumed while in transit.

Work Evenings continue on Mondays meeting at the Bottle Bank at 7p.m. but any help at any time would be much appreciated especially with litter collection , weeding , painting, planting or general tidiness in your own area. The judges in the National Competition will be commencing their visit shortly so we need to present our town in the best possible manner.

Recent work included preparing and painting the Mall statues, other repainting of signs, pillars and boxes, replanting of wildflower seeds at the Mail Road and The Mart Riverside Garden.

Due to ground damage by heavy vehicles repairing storm damage to nearby buildings the proposal to develop the Sensory Garden for Bunscoil An Clochar in Upper Main Street has been considerably delayed this year.

Commemoration of the Great Famine in West Kerry

The Dingle Peninsula Famine Commemoration will begin with an exhibition in Dingle library from Monday, May 12th to Saturday May 24th. The focus will be on the origin of the blight that devastated the area and its effect on population, emigration, eviction and the Irish Language. It will be opened by Mayor Breandán Fitzgerald on Wednesday, May 15th at 7pm.

The following night, May 16th, Dr. Conor Brosnan, who is researching a book on the Famine, will deliver a talk on the subject in An Díseart at 7.30pm. This talk is expected to attract a large attendance so two rooms are being prepared for the presentation. Entry fee at the door will be €10 and €5.

On Sunday May 18th a series of cultural events will be held at the Famine Field with input from archaeologist Isabel Bennet, poet Emer Fallon, musician Eoin Duignan, Famine folklore from Aisteoirí Bhréanainn, and words from Father Sheehy. Micheál Ó Coileáin will be Fear a’Tí. This commemoration will begin at 2.30pm.

If the weather is unsuitable, all events will be held in St. Mary’s Church on the Sunday at the intended time.

Ní hé Dia a cheap riamh an obair seo, Daoine bochta a chur le fuacht is le fán,

Is a chur ins na poorhouse go dubhach is glas orthu

Ag feall ar bhochta Dé

Nár thug riamh dóibh saibhreas

Ach ag síorobair dóibh ó aois go bás.

IONAD PHOENIX CLG NEWS UPDATE

The dust has settled since the exciting news of the purchase of the cinema by the Murphy’s. We have been sharing information with them from our ex tensive research and planning.

We thank you all for your patience as we wind our group up, it's a slower process than we anticipated. Our in-depth Business Plan, which was paid for with funds we raised through the Community Foundation of Ireland will be made public soon, as we feel it is still a valuable piece of work. There is still the need and potential for an arts centre in Dingle. With professional and legal help, we negotiated an offer of a long term loan from private individuals, if we were able to make a successful bid. However our bid was not accepted, so no capital was ever received.

NUACHT Ó IONAD PHOENIX CLG

Tá an deannach socraithe ón nuacht spreagúil gur cheannaigh muintir Uí Mhurchú an phictiúrlann. Táimid tar éis a bheith ag roinnt eolais leo ónár gcuid taighde agus pleanála fairsing.

At this current time, we hold just under €19,000 in donations, collected over the course of our campaign, from many sources, from our community, and from the Community Foundation of Ireland, as mentioned above. Again we would like to thank each and every one of you for putting your trust in us and the campaign. We have sought advice on what we are legally obliged to do with these donations. The advice we have received is that it was given to save the cinema, so it must be used for this purpose. To that end, we will be working with the Murphy’s so all the remaining donations will go directly to sponsoring community based events and activities that can be run in the cinema, once it's reopened.

Gabhaimid buíochas libh go léir as bhur bhfoighne agus muid ag druidim lenár ngrúpa, is próiseas níos moille é ná mar a bhíothas ag súil leis.

Déanfar ár bPlean Gnó domhain, ar íocadh as leis an airgead a chruinníomar trí Fhondúireacht Phobail na hÉireann a phoibliú go luath, mar is dóigh linn gur saothar luachmhar fós é. Tá gá agus seans fós le hionad ealaíon sa Daingean.

Le cabhair gairmiúil agus dlíthiúil, rinneamar idirbheartaíocht ar thairiscint ar iasacht fhadtéarmach ó dhaoine aonair príobháideacha, dá mbeimis in ann tairiscint rathúil a dhéanamh. Níor glacadh lenár dtairiscint ar aon nós, mar sin ní bhfuarthas aon chaipiteal riamh. Faoin am seo, tá beagán faoi bhun €19,000 mar shíntiúis againn, a bhailítear le linn ár bhfeachtais, ó go leor foinsí, ónár bpobal, agus ó Fhondúireacht Pobail na hÉireann, mar a luadh thuas. Arís ba mhaith linn buíochas a ghabháil le gach duine agaibh as a muinín a chur ionainn, agus as an bhfeachtas.

IONAD PHOENIX

Táimid tar éis comhairle a lorg maidir lena bhfuil oibleagáid dhlíthiúil orainn a dhéanamh leis na síntiúis seo. Is é an chomhairle a fuair muid ná gur tugadh é chun an phictiúrlann a shábháil, mar sin ní mór é a úsáid chun na críche seo. Chuige sin, beimid ag obair le muintir Uí Mhurchú ionas go rachaidh na síntiúis go léir atá fágtha go díreach chuig urraíocht a dhéanamh ar imeachtaí agus gníomhaíochtaí pobalbhunaithe is féidir

French Fish Stew with Aioli

Mark Murphy - Dingle Cookery School

There is so much flavour in this, it is very different from the rich creamy seafood chowder that we know so well. This has no cream but is thickened at the end with a little aioli. The flavours of fennel seeds, a little spice, some saffron and plenty of garlic mixed with some fresh fish make this a perfect dish to serve on a warm sunny day for lunch. Make plenty of the aioli (garlic mayonnaise) and spread it over some of the baguette. Hope you love it.

Ingredients

For the Aioli

1 lemon juiced

3 garlic cloves, crushed

2 egg yolk

olive oil

For the Soup dash of oil

1 tsp. fennel seeds

½ cayenne pepper

1 onion, chopped

2 cloves garlic, crushed

2 leeks, white parts, washed and chopped

1 bay leaf

pinch of saffron

2 plum tomatoes, quartered, seeds removed and chopped

300ml white wine

900ml fish stock

800g. mixed white fish (use firmer fish like monkfish or cod) handful of prawns, peeled and deveined small bunch of flat leaf parsley

Method

For the aioli

Whisk lemon juice, garlic, egg yolk, and salt in bowl, place this over a pot of simmering water, whisk for about 5 minutes. Put a cloth on your worktop, place the bowl on top, slowly add the oil and continue to whisk. Once it has thickened, taste and adjust the season. For the soup

Put a pot on over low to medium heat, add a little oil then the fennel seeds. After a minute or so add the cayenne pepper, onions and garlic. Let this cook for a few minutes before adding the leeks, tomatoes and bay leaf and saffron. Cook this slowly for another few minutes or so. Add the tomato and wine. Let the wine reduce by half. Add the stock and about 200ml of water. Simmer this for about 20 minutes. Add the fish and cook for about 4-6 minutes depending on the size of the fish. Keep back a little aioli for to spread on some crusty baguette slices. With the remaining aioli, whish a half of a ladle of the broth into the aioli. Return this to the pot and stir in for. Cook the broth for another minute or so. Divide between 4 bowls and serve with crusty baguette.

My One Bright Shirt

It’s been a long time

I’ve worn a long line

Of dark dull clothes

Hanging

Still with the label on

So

Wear my one bright shirt

It's All In The Mind Non Judgement

By fine tuning our senses and paying attention to what we can see, hear, smell, taste and feel we can develop an enduring mindfulness practice. This will help boost concentration, give us new perspectives and promote a calmer and clearer mind state. It takes time and perseverance but will eventually lead to a better acceptance of ourselves and others -just as we are…

There are nine attitudes as determined by Jon Kabat Zinn that are helpful to cultivate within meditation and mindfulness. Non judgement is the first of these.

Easier said than done - we rate every single experience we have as either pleasant, unpleasant or neutral. Our autonomic nervous system is constantly scanning the environment for threat and storing the data in our implicit (subliminal) memory bank in an attempt to predict our next step safely. So, we either like, dislike or are indifferent to everything we encounter. This judgement- good or bad- happens subconsciously, in micro time, continuously adding to the stock of data that informs and colours our world.

All this data is not objectively true - it is perceived through the lens of our particular conditioning and experience. We all have an ancestral and

collective blueprint that merges with whatever life has thrown at us to produce a unique individual that navigates the world in a unique way. So, it's fair to say we are not entirely responsible for our own world view. It is formed, based on input we receive from the moment we are born, and indeed from the moment we are conceived.

For example, if I grew up surrounded by beloved family pets I am likely, in later life, to judge animals kindly and see them as friendly allies. If, on the other hand, I grew up in an animal free environment and was bitten by a neighbouring dog then it is more likely that I will grow up judging animals more harshly and see them as adversaries. Neither judgement is objectively true.

So, there is a case for relinquished responsibility: it’s not my fault how I think and behave - I’m just a product of my genetic coding and the environment I was born into; both things over which I have no control - It’s not my fault if I have no say in the matter!

Herein lies the key. Mindfulness gives us the tools to step out of unconscious behaviour patterns. Meditation and informal practice gives us the space to notice our thoughts, feelings and actions. It helps us to slow down so that we begin to become aware of our reactivity, our snap decisions, our attitudes. Fostering a non judgemental attitude in our observation is essential here-otherwise it is a self defeating exercise. Our judgements and criticisms derive from the same pre-conditioned database!

We don’t need to fix, find the cause for or improve any parts we don’t approve of. By non-judgemental and gentle kindness, we can learn to disengage from our thoughts and feelings and perhaps make wiser choices based on openness, clarity and goodwill rather than reactivity.

And the best place to start is with yourself. Mindfulness is about becoming aware of the inner critic so that the self compassionate, non judgemental attention acts like a balm on the stressed nervous system. Noticing if there is a harsh self critical voice- a niggling background noise telling us that we are never enough- highlighting every mistake, underperformance, every failure and imperfection can be challenging and takes practice but is ultimately worthwhile. The simple function of noticing is the same as that of self regulating. Not feeling judged releases tensions and inhibitions. We can intentionally rest the system and gather our resources. Mindful awareness can ease us back into homeostasis- back inside our ‘window of tolerance’ and give us a sense of groundedness and balance.

Cultivating a non-judgemental attitude is a cornerstone of mindfulness practice resulting in a stronger sense of agency with more choices and options and a greater sense of our own self worth.

Solar..panels or tubes, what's the difference? Well they both provide hot water when heated by the sun’s energy, thus saving you energy, be it oil, gas or electricity.

10.00 Paul Geaney’s - Liam Evans

Saturday 3rd May

A solar system will save up to 70% of your annual hot water bill. When it comes to tubes versus panels, the tubes are marginally more efficient than panels, but realistically the difference is small, especially when we have had such a great spell of sunshine.

7.30 Dingle Pub - Full Shilling

9.30 O'Flaherty's - Open session

There is another "solar system" known in the trade as "Thermodynamic" this is a solar panel that works in the dark. Yes with no sunshine, you ask how!

9.30 Neligan's - Open Session

Well the answer is simple really, it's not a solar panel it's a heat pump.

10.00 Paul Geaney’s - Live Music

10.00 Dingle Pub - Full Shilling

Sunday 4th May

6.30 The Marina Inn - Caroline Keane (Concertina) and Tom Delany (Uileann Pipes). Musicians welcome

The way it works is a panel is fitted to your roof which is connected to a unit and cylinder in your hot press. This is a compressor similar to what's found in a fridge, this unit pumps a refrigerant gas into the panel where it heats due to the fact that the gas has a very low boiling point of about -25 Celsius so this hot gas comes back into the unit, where the gas is compressed to make it hotter, the heat is then transferred to create heat. However, this unit is dependant on electricity to operate so while saving money on heating hot water it does so at a cost.

5 - 7 Bob Griffin’s - Pilgrim Sessions

Take for example a typical family home with 3 to 5 occupants, costs on average about €1,500 to €2,000 per year to heat, of which about a 1/4 to 1/3 of this is hot water, so a typical hot water bill for a family of 5 is somewhere in the region of €450 to €650 a year.

An Apology for

the British Government

in Ireland

le John Mitchell foilsithe i 1860 athchló 1905

Táthar ag áiteamh anois orainn go mba `natural disaster' é an Gorta Mór in Éirinn.

Seo tuairim na linne :

'The English, indeed, call that famine a `dispensation of Providence' and ascribe it entirely to the blight of the potatoes. But potatoes failed in like manner all over Europe; yet there was no famine save in Ireland. The British account of the matter, then, is first, a fraud - second, a blasphemy. The Almighty, indeed, sent the potato blight, but the English created the famine....'

Tá an bháisteach tagtha ar deire agus dá bharr tá an féar ag fás agus tá an feirmeoir sásta leis féin mar bhí na páirceanna ag éiri cruaidh agus na hainmhithe ré-caite. Bhí ar na feirmeoirí min a cheannach, rud a bhí daor ach caithfí san a dhéanamh. San am chéanna bhí táirgí feirme idir bhainne, beithigh agus caoire ag éirí, a fhág an- luach ortha. Bhí na turasóirí meallta ag an aimsir bhreá ach ní rabhadar ach tagtha nuair a oscail an spéir, ach deirtear linn ná beidh an aimsir atá rómhainn ró olc in aon chor.

Trump

Níl aon bhaol dar liom, go gcuirfidh an Iaráin a mbuamaí admhacha ar leataoibh. Ná creid aon fhocal ó aon taobh. Ba dhóigh leat gur le Putin an Úcráin an tslí a bhíonn sé ag caint. Ní féidir aon rian don bhfírinne a chreidiúnt uaidh. Scaothaire agus cladhaire coimheascaireach.

Tá, deirtear, Silicon Valley i Meireiceá ag tacú le Trump ach tá an dollaeir ag titim i Wall Street agus cúlú mór ar infheisteóirí. Ní thuigim go ndúirt sé an lá cheanna go mbeadh suim aige ceangal eacnamaíoch a bheith aige leis an tSín agus ná raibh ach seachtain roimhis sin gur fhógair sé dtí poll an amhrais iad. Measaim go dtabharfaidh scata tíortha na cosa leo ach an chuma go luíofar go neascrupalach orainne, ach gan dabht bhéarfaimís ar gcosa linn gan bhaol. Domhan suaite ag Putin sa Rúis agus is beag a chuimhníonn ar an tSudáin. An-shlad ar Chríostaithe ann. Rud eile gránna an beartas a dhein Trump, cosc a chur ar aon tacaíocht airgid do tíortha an-bhocht. Tá cosc iomlán curtha ag Trump ar an ndea obair. Tá na creatúirí bochta thíos leis go gránna. Mo náire é.

Marú

Is mor am méadú atá tagtha ar an líon daoine a maraíotar ar na bóithre. Tá scata óganach marbh as bheith ag tiomáint ghluaistean agus gan ceadúnas, ciall ná dada acu ach tiarnúlacht, gan amras is minic a shleamhnaíonn an deoch ar dhaoine fásta, nó drugaí. Gan dabht bíonn na gardaí ar a ndícheall ar stop a chur le drugaí, ól agus ráisteireacht na hóige ach níl dóthain Gardaí ann fós.

Feile na Cásca

Bhí freastal maith ar an bhféile agus caighdean breá. Baintear anshásamh as an bhFéile bliain i ndiaidh bliana. An- chómharthaí.

Caid

Is dócha go bhfeacaoís an chluiche idir Chiarrai agus Corcaigh-caid.

An é go raibh Corcaigh tréis an sean chlúmh a chaitheamh díobh nó an é go raibh sean-chneáireacht tréis Ciarraí a bhualadh. Ba mhór an chailliúint Páidí Ó Clumháin rud a fhág Paul Geaney atá triocha ceathair bliain d’aois, le beirt air. Mar sin féin dhein Paul go diail. Bhí Ciarraí thíos go mór le feallanna ná feaca an réiteoir a bhí go maith. Mar a dtagann feabhas mór ar Chiarraí ní ró fhada a raghaid. Ní mar sin a bhí ag na mná a thug craobh sraithe Éireann leo gan cháim agus na buachaillí fé fiche a bhí ar fheabhas. Is dócha gurbh í an mhíorúilt ba mhó ná go raibh An Clár cothrom san iomáint, le Corcaigh. Ard chluiche. Bhí ard chluiche eile iománaíochta idir Tiobrad Árann agus Luimneach cothrom arís. Bhí árdú croí ag baint leis na cluichí seo.

Dála an scéil is le dhá phoinnte a bhuaidh Tír Chonaill ar Mhúineacháin [caid] agus is ar éigean a thug iománaithe Bhleá Ciath an lá leo ó Uíbh Fháilí. Sin cosanáirde agat.

Ómós

Bhí cruinniú ómóis don scoláire agus fear gnímh na Gaeilge, Pádraigh Ó Snodaigh [a fuair bás le déanaí ‘ge baile i mBleá Ciath] i mBaile an Fhírtéaraigh ar Luain Cásca. Bhí slua breá ann, beirt Mhac do Phádraig ag áireamh an Teachta Dála, Aongus a thiomáin anuas ar maidin agus suas tráthnóna go speisialta don ócáid.

Labhair Mícheál de Mórdha, go heolach tuiscionach, Pádraig Mac Fhearghusa go ciallmhar eolaach, agus an bhean faobhair Brenda Ní

Shúilleabháin go húdrásach deathuiscionach eolach. Mar bharr ar sin chas Páidí ‘Mhárthain’ mac Gearailt amhrán breá go binn.

Chabhraigh Pádraig Ó Sé, Bainisteóir an Chomhairchumainn le blaistíní agus deochanna boga agus tae a chur ar fáil.

‘Táim an- shásta as an ómós dom athair anseo i gCorca Dhuibhne a ghraidh sé’, arsa an Teachta Dála Aongus Ó Snodaigh.

Bhí cabhair eagraithe ó Sheosaimh Ó Conchúir agus leis an áit a réiteach agus cúrsaí a phlé agus cabhrú go díograsach leis an eagrú bhí Seosaimh ó Maoileóin. Duine eile a dhein a cion ná an file Ceaití de Bheildiún.

‘Bhí gach rud ceart’ arsa an Conchúrach.

D’iarr an Dr Pádraig Ó hÉalí a leithscéal s ghabháil leis an slua toisc nach raibh ar a chumas bheith i láthair.

Bhí fear ó Chois Fharraige ann, Pádraig Ó Flatharta.

Pope Francis

17th December 1936 - 21st April 2025

Dear brothers and sisters, In the Lord’s Paschal Mystery, death and life contended in a stupendous struggle, but the Lord now lives forever (cf. Easter Sequence). He fills us with the certainty that we too are called to share in the life that knows no end, when the clash of arms and the rumble of death will be heard no more. Let us entrust ourselves to him, for he alone can make all things new (cf. Rev. 21:5)!
