Free Cancer Survivorship Programme Returns To Dingle
Cancer support charity, Recovery Haven Kerry, will return to Dingle later this month for the next session of its popular Cancer Thrive & Survive programme.
The six-week course, run in association with the National Cancer Control Programme (NCCP), is designed to help participants with the transition from active treatment to living well with and beyond cancer.

Beginning on April 29th, the free programme will run at Dingle Primary Care Centre every Tuesday morning for six weeks, from 10.30am – 1pm, and is limited to 12 people.
The model is based on self-management, with information and support, and includes modules on well-being, cancer prevention, information on long term consequences of treatment and psycho-social support.
This hugely beneficial programme has previously been offered at Recovery Haven’s Tralee centre on a number of occasions, as well as in Castleisland, Dingle and Listowel in recent years.
Programme leader and Recovery Haven Client Services Co-ordinator, Siobhan MacSweeney, explained that the course helps and empowers patients as they finish treatment and transition into the survivorship period.
The programme includes sessions that address the recovery of self-confidence, adjustment to a changed self, and confidence to self-manage cancer-related problems and to promote recovery, wellbeing, and successful transition to survivorship, following a cancer diagnosis. If you would like to learn more or book your place, please phone Recovery Haven Kerry on 066 7192122 or email: reception@recoveryhavenkerry.com.

Let's Stalk About Rhubarb (Again!)
Irene Flannery, Nutritional Therapist

With Spring in full swing and gardens bursting back to life, it's the perfect time to celebrate one of the season's most underrated heroes: rhubarb. Long prized in traditional remedies and beloved in classic desserts, this vibrant stalky vegetable is a curious crossover between sweet and sour, old and new, East and West. And yes, technically it is a vegetable—even if most of us still think of it as the backbone of crumbles and jams.
In a time when more and more people are looking to local, seasonal produce to support health and wellbeing, rhubarb deserves its moment in the spotlight. Let’s take a fresh look at this tangy favourite, from its quirky plant family to its many culinary and health benefits and even its role in seasonal traditions.
A Vegetable in Fruit's Clothing
Rhubarb has long confused eaters and growers alike. Botanically, it belongs to the Polygonaceae family, which also gives us buckwheat and sorrel. Despite its fruity reputation, rhubarb is indeed a vegetable and it owes its sugary reputation to us Westerners, who tamed its natural tartness with lashings of sugar and used it in desserts and jams. In the kitchen, rhubarb's identity crisis has worked in its favour. From compotes and pies to chutneys and savoury sauces, it adapts to many roles with ease. But before it became a staple in our desserts, rhubarb had an entirely different life.
For thousands of years, the root of the rhubarb plant was used in traditional Chinese medicine as a remedy for digestive issues, particularly constipation. It later found its way into Arabic and European folk medicine too. But the leaves? A no-go. Highly toxic due to oxalic acid, rhubarb leaves are best admired and not consumed—they can cause nausea, cramps and even more serious effects if eaten. Luckily, some brave soul tried the stalks, lived to tell the tale and the rest is culinary history.
Spring Energy, Spring Foods
There’s something deeply invigorating about spring. As earth energy rises from root to stem, we too feel the urge to clean, move, and refresh. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), spring is associated with the liver and gallbladder—organs of detoxification and decision-making. Similarly, in traditional Irish households, Spring was a time to clear out not just the home but the body, using nature’s bitter greens and sour foods to stimulate digestion and liver function. Rhubarb fits right in. Its natural sourness nudges the liver and gallbladder into action, encouraging detoxification and bile flow. Alongside other Spring favourites like dandelion leaves, rocket and sorrel, rhubarb helps clear the inner clutter and supports the body's natural spring renewal process.
A Low-Calorie Nutritional Super-hero
At just 21 calories per 100g, rhubarb is deceptively light but delivers powerful health benefits. It contains a type of insoluble fibre that bulks
and softens the stool, making it a friend to sluggish bowels. Both its root and stalk have long been used to ease constipation and promote digestive health. This not only provides relief from bloating and cramping but can also reduce the risk of diverticulosis and colorectal issues over time. Stewed rhubarb—particularly when prepared without refined sugar—can be especially helpful for the elderly, the very young or those recovering from illness. It’s easy on the stomach and gentle in action. It’s well known that the liver and eyes are closely connected in TCM, and even Western medicine recognises that our eye health can reflect liver function. Rhubarb plays a role here too. It contains two powerful polyphenols, lutein and zeaxanthin, both known to support eye health and protect against macular degeneration. These compounds also act as antioxidants, defending the body against free radical damage from pollution, smoking and UV exposure. More recently, researchers have been exploring rhubarb’s cancer-fighting potential. Compounds known as anthraquinones, particularly emodin, appear to inhibit glucose uptake in cancer cells—effectively starving them of their main energy source. While more studies are needed, early findings suggest rhubarb could play a role in future cancer therapies.
Perhaps surprisingly, rhubarb is a great source of vitamin K—best known for its role in blood clotting but also vital for bone health and cognitive function. Vitamin K helps regulate calcium in the bones and works alongside minerals like manganese (also found in rhubarb) to strengthen the skeleton. Even more intriguing is its link to brain health. Vitamin K supports neuron integrity and protects brain cells from oxidative damage, potentially lowering the risk of dementia and Alzheimer’s.
Culinary Inspiration Beyond the Crumble
Rhubarb is usually sold without leaves and bundled in bunches. Winterforced rhubarb—grown in darkness to produce tender, sweeter, red stalks—is often prized for its colour. However, don’t be put off by the greener varieties, which tend to be hardier and just as nutritious. Rhubarb’s sour kick makes it a surprisingly versatile player in savoury dishes. In Asia and the Middle East, it is added to lamb and beef stews, where its acidity helps cut through fat and improve digestion. In Northern Europe, rhubarb has long been paired with oily fish like mackerel and herring to temper the richness and reduce the aftertaste. Try roasting rhubarb with carrots, parsnips and red onions for a tangy Spring veg tray. Or stew it gently with orange zest, a pinch of cardamom and a drizzle of honey or date syrup for a sugar-light dessert. Feeling adventurous? Make a rhubarb and mint salsa to serve alongside grilled fish or create a quick chutney with red onion, vinegar, ginger and a hint of chilli. It also works beautifully with lentils and fresh herbs in a warming soup.
This Spring, embrace rhubarb for what it is: not just a dessert idea, but a cleansing, nourishing and seasonally smart vegetable. Whichever way you decide to eat it, let rhubarb be your reminder that nature provides exactly what we need, when we need it. Now, move it out of the fruit bowl and into the veg box—where it belongs!

Sam Hussey in Serious Accident
- Kerry Evening Post 28 August 1858
There was great sensation in Dingle on Wednesday when news came that Samuel Hussey, J.P. had been involved in a serious accident while he and Master Hickson, of Fermoyle House, were galloping along Fermoyle Strand. Suddenly, both horses came in contact and their riders were thrown. Master Hickson was pitched into the sea where the water broke his fall, but Mr. Hussey wasn’t so fortunate. His horse fell on the strand bringing down his rider. As the horse tried to get up it kicked Mr. Hussey in the face, breaking his nose completely just below the eyes and tearing the flesh off his cheeks.
This left a severe and lacerated wound. However, it is understood that he will make a favourable recovery. He is very popular with the people of Dingle.
Mad Dog on the Loose
-Cork Advertising Gazette 07 April 1858
Mr. Daniel O’Sullivan, farmer, of Dooks, near Killorglin has, during the past week, lost 6 cows and 3 pigs from the bite of a mad dog which got among his cattle.
Two Drowned Taking Shortcut
-Kerry Evening Post 28 January 1874
Information has been received that two men were drowned between Waterville and Cahersiveen last Monday. According to reports, two policemen were returning on a horse and car from Waterville Petty Sessions and decided to take a short cut along the coast.
The rising tide caught them, so they made some effort to go towards a part of the shore where the water seemed shallower and from where they could travel on in greater safety. Suddenly, the horse lost its footing and one of the policemen felt their lives were in danger. He removed his clothing and swam ashore. The other two men – Sub-constable Gunning and the driver named Reilly were quickly immersed and were drowned in a matter of seconds. Sub- Constable Gunning had been in the force for about eight years.
Ship and Crew Feared Lost
-The Glasgow Sentinel 17 July 1858
Large quantities of turpentine have been coming ashore along Dingle and Tralee Bays and all around the Corkaguiney peninsula. A large mast, greatly charred, and other timbers with the signs of fire, came ashore near Castlegregory. It seems that a vessel has suffered a dis-
astrous fire on board and that the ship had to be abandoned. The crew may have been rescued by a passing ship, but it is feared they were lost.
Brawl Results in Serious Injury
-Tralee Chronicle 15 June 1875
On Saturday night last a row erupted in a public house between two brothers named Cronin and two brothers named Daly. They were ejected from the public house but resumed their combat near the railway station.
One of the men, Thomas Daly, received some very serious injuries, his face being disfigured to a frightening extent. The Cronins were arrested in their home shortly after and were taken to jail.
Inspector Ryan and the police brought Thomas Daly to Dr. Falvey who examined him and found several wounds on his head and face. His upper lip was split right up to his nose and his front teeth, in his upper jaw, had been knocked out.
The doctor considered the wounds to be so serious that he refused to let Daly leave town. He was taken to lodgings where he remains confined to bed and his condition is being monitored.
Mysterious Tragedy in Kerry
-Witness (Belfast) 22 June 1877
Circumstances connected with the disappearance of a man named Michael Moriarty leave little doubt that a tragedy has been perpetrated in the neighbourhood of Castlegregory. The story is that on the 11th of February last Moriarty went to Castlegregory where he engaged in match-making for his son.
He left Castlegregory between 10 and 11 o’clock that night, in company, it is reported, with a woman, but he never reached home. Up to now, over four months later, no tidings of
his whereabouts have been discovered. His son, also Michael, said that he and Dan Courtney found signs of a struggle on the sand bank near the shore. His father’s shoes were found recently in the area and his trousers, turned inside out, were found some distance from the shoes.
It is said that Moriarty had a small quantity of drink taken but that he wasn’t drunk when he left. The police intend to make a diligent search of the place where young Michael believes his father is buried.
Napoleon in Glenbeigh
-Kerry Evening Post 09 August 1865
His Highness, Prince Louis-Napoleon arrived at Mr. Shea’s Headley Arms Hotel, Glenbeigh, on Friday last at 4 a.m. and was so pleased with his reception and the hotel that he expressed his intention to remain there for some days. However, at midnight, sixteen hours later, a telegram arrived calling His Imperial Highness away. It is understood that he sailed from Queenstown (Cobh) twelve hours later that day.
(He was only nine years old then – what brought him to Kerry? His life was a short one. He trained in the British military for a period but after the war broke out between Britain and the Zulu kingdom, in January 1879, he pleaded to be allowed to observe the conflict. Eventually he was given permission to go but he always had to be under protective guard. However, he managed to slip away from his minders on the first of June but was caught off guard by the Zulus.
He was found dead the next day with 18 stab wounds. It was just before his 23rd birthday. He was a great nephew of Napoleon Bonaparte.)

New Film Showcases Unique
History And Heritage Of Milltown

6,000 years of local history told through the lens of the local landscape
A new film which showcases the spectacular and unique history and heritage of the Milltown area is to be launched at the end of April. ‘Milltown:
The Story of a Kerry Landscape’ is an initiative of the Milltown History and Heritage Society, a recently established voluntary group which aims to protect and promote the many distinctive features of the local landscape. The film, directed by Niall Foley, was prompted by a desire to highlight how archaeology, heritage and key events and personalities in the past have shaped the development of the town and its hinterland over thousands of years.
The 'world premiere' of the new documentary will take place on Friday, 25 April at 8pm in the Old Community Hall in Milltown and will be followed by a roundtable discussion with the team behind the film.
Tickets, at just €10, are now available from milltownhistoryheritage.ie with all proceeds going to the Milltown History and Heritage Society which has plans for several local oral history, conservation, and educational projects.
The script for ‘Milltown: The Story of a Kerry Landscape’ was researched and written by Milltown natives and historians Dr John Knightly and Dr Owen O’Shea and the project coordinator was Stewart Stephens of the Milltown Community and Chamber Alliance. Stewart said the film is a spectacular portrayal of the local landscape and the key milestones in the history of Milltown:
“The aerial cinematography from videographer Niall Foley is quite breathtaking and portrays Milltown in an innovative way with an emphasis on the unique local landscape and its heritage and archaeology. The film begins with the story of the 6,000-year-old portal tomb at Killaclohane and takes the story of the development of Milltown right up to the present day,” said Stewart.
Key locations and sites like the 13th century Augustinian abbey at Killagha, the Mass Rock where Fr Thaddeus Moriarty was arrested in 1653, and Kilcoleman Abbey which was the home of the Godfrey family for hundreds of years, feature prominently in the film as well as the many social, cultural, economic, and political developments which made Milltown what it is today.
“One of our key objectives of the film is to inform existing residents as well as the many newcomers to our community in recent years about the history of the place and why preserving and protecting our history and heritage is so important. The hope is that there will be a renewed interest in the past and how it influences the present and the future,” said Stewart.
‘Milltown: The Story of a Kerry Landscape’ was funded by the LEADER programme and Kerry County Council. More information can be found on the Facebook and Instagram pages of the Milltown History and Heritage Society and from milltownhistoryheritage@gmail.com

Toradh fónta d'Aisteoirí Bhréanainn

Bhain Aisteoirí Bhréanainn ceithre Ghradam ag an bhFéile Náisiúnta Drámaíochta i Maigh Chromtha an deireadh seachtaine seo caite. B’í seo an chéad Fhéile Nåisiúnta ó tháinig an comórtas faoi scáth an Oireachtais.
Bronnadh Gradam léiritheoir na Féile ar Mharina Ní Dhubháin Aisteoirí Bhréanainn, as an dráma nua-scríofa “Na Gealáin”, a cuireadh ar stáitse don chéad uair ar an Satharn in amharclann Bhearna na Sceiche ar an mbaile.
Fuair Iarfhlaith Ó Murchú gradam don aisteoireacht, mar a fuair Bríd Criomhthain agus Sláine Ní Chathalláin, agus bronnadh a gcomhleithéid ar na páistí a bhí páirteach sa dráma: Lexi Hutchinson, Tomás agus Ruán Ó Muircheartaigh, agus Niah Radwanski. Bhí foireann ó Mhá Nuad, Cuallacht Cholmcille agus an Cumann Drámaíochta i bpáirt, agus foireann Aisteoirí Chois Laoi ó Chorcaigh páirteach freisin, ach b’iad Aisteoirí an Lóchrainn ó Cheatharlach a thug leo an trí Ghradam eile.
Thug an moltóir, Muiris Ó Súilleabháin, “dráma an-spéisiúil fior-eisceachtúil” ar “Na Gealáin” agus é ag caint tar éis an léirithe, agus dúirt Uachtarán an Oireachtais, Éamon Ó Cuív, go raibh dóchas aige go mba thús nua don drámaíocht amaitéarach sa Ghaeilge an fhéile seo.

COUNTY CLEANUP DAY. This Saturday April 12th is the date chosen for the Kerry County Cleanup Day this year. Dingle Tidy Towns Committee invite members of the public to join them at the Bottle Bank on The Tracks from 10am. Plans for their effort will be coordinated to ensure as many of the 8 approach roads as possible can be cleared of unsightly litter up to a distance of at least 2 km from the town centre. High vis vests, gloves, bags and some pickers will be available so no excuses just join in this community effort and help improve the image of our area in the process. Motorists are requested to be on the lockout on all roads in Kerry on Saturday for litter collectors including back roads, lanes etc.
GARDA STATION CHANGES. We wish Sergeant Elaine O'Donoghue well in her recent transfer having spent several years attached to Dingle Garda Station in which time she worked diligently to ensure the safety of the people of West Kerry as well as all who visited our area. We welcome Sergeant Clerkin who now joins the team in the Dingle Station and wish him and indeed all the Gardai attached to the Station continued success in their work which often involves unpopular decisions and dangerous situations for their safety and their personal health.
AWARDS. Great to see personnel from our renowned food outlets getting recognition for their talents at the recent Restaurants Association Munster Awards Ceremony.
Sean Roche from Doyle's Seafood Restaurant John Street was named Best Chef in Kerry 2025. Nick Foley from Solas/ Fish Factory Restaurants in Strand Street was named as Innovator of The Year 2025. A reminder to people planning a meal out or celebration of some kind that most local restaurants are now open and its a good time to book a table at a time of your choosing before the busier times often mean less options due to prior bookings. Just going through some of the menus online we are surely spoilt for choice in West Kerry but these outlets need local support as well as the visitor numbers which we hope will continue despite the challenges in the world economy at present.

PRESENTATIONS.
The organisers of the West Kerry Annual Tractor Run recently shared the net proceeds of their 2024 event dividing €16,500 equally between the Irish Lung Fibrosis Association and The West Kerry Community Hospital Patients Fund. Since the Tractor Run idea was first mooted in 2017 the group have now collected over €100,000 and supported the ILFA and a number of local charities after each event. Great effort indeed and much appreciated by participants, supporters and most importantly by the recipient charities who often would not survive without such donations. Molaim sibh go léir.
SACRED HEART UNIVERSITY OPENING. We extend a big Céad Míle Fáilte to the pupils, instructors, staff and directors of the Sacred Heart University who have now officially opened their new premises at John Street in the site of the old CBS Monastery Building. The building has been extensively renovated internally and a modern glass frontier extension to the John Street Eastern side brings this former 19th Century Secondary School into a real modern University Type Campus. Many of the SHU students will be offered terms away from their American base to spend terms of Study in the Dingle Campus while continuing instruction in their chosen faculties.
EVENTS. On Saturday April 12th a new Athletics Event called Rith Dingle incorporating a 5km
and 10km route will be held starting and finishing at Ventry Beach Car Park. Some traffic delays can be expected and road users are requested to be extra careful and cooperative on the day. PARADES. Due to my poor computer skills my apologies but the following attachment re the St Patricks Day Parades was committed from our last edition.
The organisers wish to say a big thank you to the various groups, clubs and individuals who took part in the parades. A special word to the school groups who provided such wonderful music and entertainment with their entries and the parents and pupils who came out in great numbers also.
Rinceoiri Na Riochta once again put on a beautiful display of Irish Dancing on the Holy Ground Stage immediately after the Parade . The Dingle Carnival Band also set up on the natural stage outside St Mary's Church in Green Street with their unique sound to a very appreciative audience.
Our sincere thanks to The Members of The Dingle Fife And Drum Band for their mammoth efforts in both parades to An Gárda Síochána and to our loyal band of stewards all of whom ensure the smooth running of this and many more public events throughout the year in our town. Maith sibh go leir!!!.

Five surfers from Brandon Bay (attending Meán Scoil Nua an Leith Triúigh) competed in the highly competitive Irish Surfing Association Junior National Event in Tramore, County Waterford last weekend.
The Kerry surfers managed to battle through the rounds and gained places in 5 of the 8 finals which is fantastic achievement.
They were competing against surfers from Clare, Sligo, Donegal and Waterford and the standard of surfing was very high.
Anna Roberts was competing in Under18 Girls Shortboard and Longboard gaining 3rd and 4th place respectively in the finals.
Jago Brodie was competing in the Under 18 Boys Shortboard gaining 3rd place in the final after winning the quarter and semi final rounds. Caoimhe Skinner Syme was competing in the Under 16 Girls Shortboard gaining 3rd place in the final.

The surfing conditions were good for the day with clean waves and offshore winds. The swell got progressively smaller throughout the day making the conditions more challenging for the final rounds.
The surfers are busy training for the next event in Lahinch, County Clare on the 11th of April.
It has taken years of practice in the hardest of winter conditions for these juniors to reach the level that they are at. The 3 top surfers from each category will get to represent Ireland at the world junior championships in California this summer. If any business is interested in sponsoring our young stars, please reach out to kerrysurfclub77@gmail.com

West Kerry Care of the Aged
Maria O'Mahony
For years, West Kerry Care of the Aged has been at the heart of our community, offering essential services to seniors in West Kerry. Founded in 1969 the organisation was created with the mission of providing housing to the elderly people in the area at the time. What started as a small initiative has grown into multiple services for West Kerry
• Gairdin Mhuire Day Centre is at the heart of West Kerry Care of the Aged, it’s a social hub where people come together to enjoy a cup of tea, three course meal, activities such as art classes, music and chair yoga and most importantly a good support network to come together to spend quality time in a social settling
• Silver Bia, Meals on Wheels – It started at the beginning of the pandemic when the day centre was forced to close but we wanted to reach out to people isolating. We have grown this service over the past 5 years and now we deliver 19,000 meals per year to people on the Dingle Peninsula!
• Charity Shop – Our charity shop located on Goat Street. It is run our Board members and a small number if volunteers. We greatly appreciate all donations of clean clothes, bedlinen, shoes and kitchenware. All money spent in the shop is put back into the organisation to help fund our services.
We couldn’t provide these amenities in the community without the support of the HSE who contribute towards the running of West Kerry Care of the Aged and in particular the Community Work Department who assist us in meeting our charitable objectives. This year we were fortunate to be awarded money from the HSE to purchase a new van to help us deliver our Meals on Wheels service and through the Community Refurbishment Grant we are being part funded to extend the Gairdin Mhuire Day Centre with a new wheelchair accessible bathroom. This extension is vital to the enjoyment of those attending the Day Centre, but every upgrade is expensive! We try to keep the costs to our clients as low as possible and along with the HSE funding we rely on the generosity of the public to help fund the services. Every donation, whether big or small helps. Many businesses in Dingle are very generous to WKCA by sponsoring spot prizes or giving donations towards the cost of the annual social held in the Skellig Hotel. We benefit every year from the generosity of the Goat Street Wren and the Dingle Bay Rovers and this year Coiste Baile na nGall chose us as the beneficiary of their Christmas Day swim and we were delighted to receive a cheque for €800 last month when some of the members joined us for lunch. Their donation will be put to good use in the Day Centre extension!

To learn more about our work or to get involved, visit Gairdin Mhuire Day Centre on Green Street, Dingle or call (066) 9150474
We thank you for your support and look forward to seeing you at our upcoming Cake Sale on Saturday April 12th at 11 o’clock in the Gairdin Mhuire Day Centre on Green Street.

Solar..panels or tubes, what's the difference? Well they both provide hot water when heated by the sun’s energy, thus saving you energy, be it oil, gas or electricity.
• Tae & Plé gach Déardaoin @ 12:00 i Benner’s le Dúchas an Daingin
A solar system will save up to 70% of your annual hot water bill. When it comes to tubes versus panels, the tubes are marginally more efficient than panels, but realistically the difference is small, especially when we have had such a great spell of sunshine.
Tomhais na coicíse
There is another "solar system" known in the trade as "Thermodynamic" this is a solar panel that works in the dark. Yes with no sunshine, you ask how!

Freagra & buaiteoirí an eagráin seo chaite: Tháinig sé isteach ar dhroim na ndaoine, agus chuaigh sé amach chomh mín le síoda
Well the answer is simple really, it's not a solar panel it's a heat pump. The way it works is a panel is fitted to your roof which is connected to a unit and cylinder in your hot press. This is a compressor similar to what's found in a fridge, this unit pumps a refrigerant gas into the panel where it heats due to the fact that the gas has a very low boiling point of about -25 Celsius so this hot gas comes back into the unit, where the gas is compressed to make it hotter, the heat is then transferred to create heat. However, this unit is dependant on electricity to operate so while saving money on heating hot water it does so at a cost.

Freagra: Móin
Take for example a typical family home with 3 to 5 occupants, costs on average about €1,500 to €2,000 per year to heat, of which about a 1/4 to 1/3 of this is hot water, so a typical hot water bill for a family of 5 is somewhere in the region of €450 to €650 a year.
A solar system for a family of 5 can cost anything from €4,000 to €5,500 supplied and fitted, giving them a yearly saving of approx €350 to €500 and when you take into account the rising cost of energy, a system can pay for itself in 5 to 10 years.

Miso Braised Beef
Mark Murphy - Dingle Cookery School

Rich and full of umami, this Miso Braised Beef brings deep flavour to the table with minimal effort. The beef cooks slowly with wine, tomato purée, and a spoonful of miso—the key ingredient here. Miso, a traditional Japanese seasoning made from fermented soybeans, adds savoury depth without overpowering the dish. It’s an easy way to explore a new ingredient that works well in many recipes. You’ll find miso in most supermarkets, usually in the Asian or international aisle. This recipe is simple to make and doesn’t need much hands-on time, perfect for weekends or relaxed gatherings. Serve with mashed potatoes or crusty bread to catch every drop of the sauce. A satisfying dish with a little something unexpected.
Ingredients
1kg beef for braising, use chuck, cut into large chunks
Salt and pepper
2 small onions, diced
4 cloves garlic, crushed
3 carrots, diced
2 tsp. tomato puree
2 tbsp. white miso paste
350ml white wine
100ml soy sauce
Bunch of thyme
Bay leaf
Method
1. Preheat your oven to 165ºC
2. Season the beef generously with salt and pepper.
3. Heat a pan over medium-high heat, add a little oil, and brown the beef on all sides. Once browned, remove the beef and set aside.
4. Lower the heat slightly, then add the onions, garlic, and carrots to the same pan. Cook for a few minutes until they start to soften and take on some colour.
5. Stir in the tomato purée and miso paste, cooking for 1–2 minutes to bring out their flavours.
6. Pour in the wine and let it simmer for 5–10 minutes to reduce slightly.
7. Transfer everything into a casserole dish, placing the beef on top of the vegetables and sauce.
8. Add the soy sauce, thyme, and bay leaf. Season well, cover with a lid, and place in the oven for about 3 hours. (Check halfway through to ensure there’s enough liquid – add a little water if needed.)
9. Once the beef is tender and falling apart, remove the lid and increase the oven temperature to 210ºC. Cook uncovered for a further 20 minutes to reduce and slightly caramelise the top.
10. Serve with a generous spoonful of creamy mashed potatoes. Bain Taitneamh As!

Message from Fr Michael Moynihan
We are living in strange times. The world order from a financial point of view is changing rapidly. This uncertainty naturally causes a certain amount of fear. The beautiful weather these past few days reminds us of the beauty of the world. As Easter approaches it is good to take a moment to reflect on who God is for us. We come to know about God through reading the bible, spending time in prayer and noticing the little miracles that happen each day. The people who heard Jesus speak had no clue that He was the Son of God and that by breaking through the barrier of death he would open up the way to eternal life for all who believe in him. Holy Week begins next Sunday. In the days ahead we accompany Jesus in his last days. We will see him celebrate the Last Supper with his Apostles, we will witness his Agony in the Garden, we will observe his betrayal by one of his close followers, we will view his trial and his scourging, we will accompany him on his journey to the Hill of Calvary. We will be there when he is nailed to the Cross and we will gaze on him in his last agony. We will honour him in the moment of his death and we will accompany his body to the tomb in the hillside. And then we will wait. Then with Mary Magdalene we will go to the tomb early in the morning to find it empty, coming to the realisation that Jesus is risen from the dead. And then our joy will be complete.
In West Kerry Live this week there is list of times for the Easter Ceremonies in the four parishes of Corca Dhuibhne. I extend a word of invitation and encouragement to all to attend the Holy Week Ceremonies. Our readings at Mass these past few weeks spoke of forgiveness. A visiting Priest will be available for confession of Holy Saturday.
Holy Thursday Walk for Water in solidarity with the people for whom running water is a distant dream. People are invited to join in the Walk for Water, leaving St Mary’s Church at 2.30pm, walking as far as Garfinny Bridge. Please bring a bottle to bring back some water.
Prayer around the Cross will take place on Good Friday from 7.00pm to 10.30pm in St Mary’s church, Dingle, beginning at 7.00pm with Stations of the Cross.
A reminder to return your Trócaire box to the church in the days ahead. Through our generosity Trócaire helps ease the burden of poverty for the poorest of the poor. This Lent the focus is on a family from Guatemala. For more information visit trocaire.org
Wishing you all Gods blessings in the lead up to Easter and the joy of the Risen Christ throughout the Easter Season - Fr Michael

Deacrachtaí Cumarsáide
Mícheál Ó hUanacháin
Bhí deacrachtaí ag club Chiarraí le tamall beag anuas le lucht riaracháin na Sraithe i gCumann Peile na hÉireann, an FAI.
Ag féachaint siar sa stair dúinn tabharfaimid faoi ndeara gur beag club nach raibh deacrachtaí aige leis an FAI ag pointe éigin. Baineann cuid de na cnámha spairne le fadhbanna ar leith, ach ar an ócáid seo is le hathruithe clárúcháin imreoirí a bhain sé.

Mhaígh an club go raibh gach rud déanta i gceart acu maidir le clárú Stefan Stanic-Floody, agus bhíodar an-chrosta leis an toradh a d’fhógair an FAI, cluiche tosaigh na bliana a chur ar neamhní. Go neamhbhalbh, níl buanna Chiarraí chomh flúirseach san go dtig leo glacadh go réidh le ceann acu bheith curtha ar ceal de bharr chúrsaí riaracháin.
Níl fúm anso ráitis an chlub agus an FAI a mheá, óir tagann siad salach ar a chéile, agus gan an cás a thriail arís ní fhéadfaí ceart a thabhairt don dá thaobh. Ach tá gach cosúlacht ar an scéal go raibh deacrachtaí cumarsáide, ar a laghad, idir an dá dhream. Is fiú a thabhairt faoi ndeara, mar sin féin, gur cuireadh píonós ar dhá chlub eile ag an am céanna, iadsan freisin ciontaithe in imreoirí neamhchláraithe a chur chun páirce.
I beag má tá club ar domhan a mhaífeadh nach ndearna sé botún riaracháin riamh. Ach is mó cineål botún atá ann, agus cuirtear an píonós cuí orthu de ghnáth, tar éis próiseas fiosrúcháin. Tá sé deacair a chreidiúint go ndéanfadh trí chlub éagsúla an botún céanna maidir le clárú imreoirí atá ag teacht isteach ina gclubanna ó shraitheanna thar lear, ag an am céanna.
Is ró-dhócha go mbeidh achomharc ann, agus tharlódh go mbeadh malairt toradh ar an aighneas amach anseo.

Ar an bpáirc imeartha, is beag tuairisc níos fearr a bhí ag na Ciarraígh le coicíos. Bhí Coláiste Ollscoile Bhleá Cliath mar chuairteoirí i bPáirc Chnocáin an Iolair, agus rugadar leo na pointí a bhuíochas de chúl mífhortúnach a chuir Sean O'Connell isteach in eangach Tim Oliver-Hiemer go gairid i ndiaidh leath-ama.
Thugadar Luimneach orthu féin an Aoine dar gcionn, agus ainneoin sárshábháil a dhein an cúlbáire nuair a bronnadh cic éirice ar Treaty United go luath sa chluiche, b'shin an chuid den chluiche is fearr a chruthaigh do na cuairteoirí. Bronnadh an dara chic éirice ar Treaty díreach roimh leath-ama, agus an uair seo cé gur éirigh le Tim-Oliver Hiemer láimh a thadhall le cic David Tarmey, bhí sé ró-låidir don chúlbáire.
Nikodem Kozlowski a thug an dara chúl do mhuintir Luimnigh agus níos lú ná uair a' chloig imeartha, agus iar-imreoir na Ríochta, Trpimir Vrljicak, a chuir an sméar mullaigh ar bhua Treaty agus ceathrú uaire fós le n-imirt. Beidh an colún seo ag glacadh saoire gearr anois, agus ní bheidh sé chugaibh arís sa chéad eagrán eile de Chorca Dhuibhne Beo. Nuair a fhillfimid, beidh raidhse cur síos le déanamh ar chluichí seachas ar chúrsaí riaracháin.

It's All In The Mind
A Poem for Life
Orla Smyth

Everything is beautiful and I am so sad. This is how the heart makes a duet of wonder and grief. The light spraying through the lace of the fern is as delicate as the fibers of memory forming their web around the knot in my throat. The breeze makes the birds move from branch to branch as this ache makes me look for those I’ve lost in the next room, in the next song, in the laugh of the next stranger. In the very center, under it all, what we have that no one can take away and all that we’ve lost face each other. It is there that I’m adrift, feeling punctured by a holiness that exists inside everything. I am so sad and everything is beautiful. by Mark Nepo
To the memory of my father

An Apology for the British Government in Ireland
le John Mitchell
foilsithe i 1860 athchló 1905

Táthar ag áiteamh anois orainn go mba `natural disaster' é an Gorta Mór in Éirinn.
Seo tuairim na linne : 'The English, indeed, call that famine a `dispensation of Providence' and ascribe it entirely to the blight of the potatoes. But potatoes failed in like manner all over Europe; yet there was no famine save in Ireland. The British account of the matter, then, is first, a fraud - second, a blasphemy. The Almighty, indeed, sent the potato blight, but the English created the famine....'

Níl aon teora ach an scrios ata meáite ag Trump ach sin taobh amháin don scéal. Má bhailíonn cách ina choinnibh beidh iomard gan leigheas air. Tá lucht an airgid i Meiriceá ag iarraidh an bonn a bhain uaidh ach ta cúpla mór ghaiscigh airgid ag tabhairt cúnaimh dó. Má chuireann an tAontas Eorpach go láidir ina choinne beidh mearbhall air, rud atá tuillte aige. Tá freagra láidir fachta aige óna chomharsa Canada agus nuair a bhíonn na milte diobartha aige cé a dhéanfaidh an obair throm i Meiriceá? Cé ná fuil ach 10% ar Shasana ní sásta atáid, ná an Fhrainnc an Ghearmáin ag cur na gcos uatha go láidir.
An Feirmeoir
Tá an-phraghas ar mhairteoil agus ar chaoireoil rud a fhágann scata feirmeoirí sásta.
Gan dabht ‘sí an fhadhb ná na cógaisí eagsúla 46% a bhíodh ag dul dtí Meiriceá, fé léigear. Ná fuil margadh dos na cógaisí seo i scata tíortha ach cur chuige seachas a bheith ag braith ar Trump agus a chlithireacht.
Aimsir
Tá an-aimsir fachta againn le tamall agus meastar ná beidh aon mhór athrú. Rud amháin, sa chás go mbeadh an lá brea te agus é fuar san oíche, tá an baol i gcónaí go mbuailfeadh an chrithir olla an chaora nó an t-uan is mó. Beam ag súil le oícheannta gan aon nimh.
Matt
Fuair an saineolaí mara Matt Murphy a bhí ag cur fé ar Inis Earcáin in iarthar Chorcaí bás le déanaí. Fear iontach, fear cáirdiúil agus fear gaisce gan lán. Is i mbun taighde ar éisc cois cladaigh agus amuigh i gcuanta doimhne a bhíodh sé. Is mó cómhdháil a chuir sé ar bun le scata cainteoirí fén iasc agus na galair a bhuaileadh iad agus conas leigheas a aimsiú.
Is mó duine a bhí buíoch do Mhatt. Bhí sé anshásta bualadh fé in Inis Earcáin agus é coitianta ag iarraidh fhadhbanna mara a réiteacht. Bhí sé agus a chéile agus a gclann ag cur fútha ann le tamall maith. Beannacht dílis Dé lena anam caoin fáilteach.
Gan dabht is mó duine a bhaineadh sólas as a iris míosúil ‘Sherkin Comment’.
