The ‘paddle out’ in Warrnambool. 2024E

HUNDREDS of surfers and spectators gathered at Warrnambool’s waterfront earlier this month to highlight their objection to proposed seismic blasts directly off the coast.

Bookings should be made as early as possible.

The Great Ocean Rescue tour, an initiative of OCEAN (Otway Coastal Environment Action Network), included a peaceful rally and ‘paddle out’ at Warrnambool. OCEAN is a network of community groups along the west coast of Victoria opposing seismic blasting and new gas in the offshore Otway Basin. The four-week long ‘Great Ocean ‘Rescue Tour’ was timed to coincide with the summer tourist season along the Great Ocean Road and aimed to raise awareness of what the group believes is the destructive effects of seismic blasting.

Copy and late classified bookings should be lodged by 12noon Wednesday. Advertising sales contact

The rally and paddle out in Warrnambool saw hundreds of surfers and spectators rally at Warrnambool’s waterfront to express their objection to the two current proposals to seismic blast over 4.5 million hectares directly off their coast. According to a statement released by the group, the City of Warrnambool takes in Logan Beach, a critical calving ground for the endangered Southern Right Whale. Over 200 people took to the water on surfboards to show their support for an ocean free of seismic blasting. “The vast majority of Australian people have no idea what seismic blasting is, nor the devastation it causes to our marinelife,” OCEAN campaigner Lisa Deppeler said. “It’s time to blow the lid on this awful secret and that is the objective of the

Great Ocean Road Tour.” ‘No More Gas’ campaigner for Friends of the Earth Melbourne, Freja Leonard, spoke of the dangers to the ocean and climate if seismic blasting is allowed to go ahead in the Southern Ocean. “By the time the blasting is done and the gas is drilled, over a decade will have passed and the next decade is critical for climate action,” she said. The tour kicked off in Barwon Heads on January 5 with a screening of the Surfrider Foundation documentary, SouthernBlast, followed the next day by a street rally in Ocean Grove. Subsequent screenings and rallies were held in Torquay, Wye River, Apollo Bay and Port Fairy before coming to Warrnambool. The tour will end in Portland on January 27.

Once complete, the Warrnambool Base From February, the RLDC will provide Warrnambool Base Hospital will get commercial linen services and deliver Hospital redevelopment will transform underway next month. During a visit to the recently completed Regional Logistics Distribution Centre (RLDC) in Warrnambool earlier this week, Minister for Health Infrastructure MaryAnne Thomas also announced Hansen Yuncken will begin work on the hospital redevelopment early February. The hospital transformation is on track, with the early works to include services upgrades and relocations. Playing a major role in the delivery of world-class health care in Victoria’s south west, the completion of the purpose-built RLDC has paved the way for onsite works to begin, with South-West Healthcare moving its laundry and healthcare supply

technology-led healthcare supply and logistics warehousing to both the hospital and more than 50 health providers throughout the region. The automated storage and retrieval system will ensure a safer workplace for logistics staff by streamlining the distribution process. The purpose-built condensed storage system will robotically pick and deliver essential healthcare supplies to workers at ergonomically designed stations to be packed and sent. In its soon-to-be former facility, South West Healthcare processes more than 170,000 goods and services requests, along with 1,400 tonnes of linen from its

healthcare in the region – delivering a new multi-storey clinical services tower, bigger emergency department, 22 extra inpatient beds, more operating theatres, dedicated areas for pathology and dialysis services, and up to 400 car parks. The redevelopment is one of the largest health infrastructure investments in regional Victoria and is creating significant employment opportunities for the region, with around 800 jobs available throughout construction. The Warrnambool Base Hospital redevelopment is on track to be completed in 2027. Speaking from the RLDC on Tuesday, Minister for Health Infrastructure Mary-

Smileyscopes a great distraction

BLOOD tests and other medical procedures can be frightening for young children, but the experience is now a little less daunting thanks to the introduction of SmileyScope. At a cost of $3000 per unit to hire on a 12-month basis, the SmileyScope goggles take children on virtual-reality adventures to relieve stress and anxiety during their medical procedures. Looking through the goggles, children can swim with seals, snuggle kittens at cat cafes and relax under a starry sky. Used in leading children’s hospitals both in Australia and the United States, South West Healthcare trialled one in its paediatric unit (and one in the emergency department paediatrics treatment room) last year and had great success. “They are fantastic as a distraction for children undergoing procedures involving needles in particular,” paediatric unit nurse Sophie Weir said. “Kids who have been anxious have often become more relaxed and have really enjoyed the adventures through the goggles.” Emergency department nurse unit manager Jess Brereton also praised the SmileyScope. “They’re a wonderful asset to the hospital and staff are using them in paediatrics three or four times a day,” Jess said. South West Healthcare is currently fundraising to hire more goggles, and was this week thrilled that the Southwest Bottles and Collectables Club will be donating some proceeds from its annual show towards the rental costs. “We’re very grateful to the club for their support and hope the community will turn out to enjoy the annual show,” Jess said. South West Bottle and Collectables Club member Steve Morgan said the show

money to help with the rental of two SmileyScopes for the hospital.” As part of the show, members of the Warrnambool Historical Vehicle Car Club will also have some vehicles on display. “Our club currently has about 380 members, most of who come from

Warrnambool and district, and among us all we have about 760 cars, so hopefully we’ll get a few along on February 3 and 4 and help support this great fundraiser,” former club president Ray Begelhole said. The show will run from 9am each day.

A large crowd enjoyed the special presentation evening at the Lighthouse Theatre. 2024E

The proud recipients of this year’s Australia Day awards with Warrnambool City mayor Twenty-nine residents took the pledge and became Australian citizens during a special Cr Ben Blain. 2024E ceremony on Tuesday night. 2024E

MORE than 300 people gathered in the Lighthouse Theatre earlier this week as Warrnambool welcomed its new Australian citizens and recognised winners of the 2024 Warrnambool Citizen of the Year Awards. Twenty-nine people from countries such as South Africa, New Zealand, the Philippines, the United Kingdom, France, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, China, Indonesia, Nepal, Thailand and Afghanistan decided to take the pledge and become Australian citizens. Tuesday evening’s ceremony also provided an opportunity to come together and officially thank the winners of this year’s awards - Tom Richardson (Citizen of the Year), Courtney Mathew (Young

Citizen of the Year), The Project’s ‘Fabric of Life’ festival (Community Event of the Year) and Ailiche Goddard-Clegg (Local Achiever Award). “I’m really pleased to be able to share in the excitement of a group of people who are beginning their journey as Australian citizens while officially recognising another group who are shining examples of everything a good citizen should aspire to be,” Warrnambool mayor Cr Ben Blain said. “After welcoming our new citizens and hearing from our award winners, I’m filled with a huge sense of pride to be part of this community.” Citizen of the Year Tom Richardson said he was honoured by the recognition. “This is really humbling and I see it as a monumental win for creativity and for

community,” he said. “Every single week I’m lucky enough to partner with hundreds and hundreds of people in Warrnambool who are showing up every day to make sure that the lives of everyone in our community are a little bit more vibrant, a little bit more safe. “It takes 300 people to put the Find Your Voice Choir on stage and it’s fast becoming my life’s work and I really want to honour and celebrate with co-founder Kylie Thulborn. “They’re going to take over the world. We’ve got artists and a choir who are going to change the face of the planet. “I really want to thank all of the council men and women who stood behind the creative arts and said ‘we see the value in doing this, we see what it brings to the community’ and while it might not be

necessary for life, it’s the stuff that makes life worth living.” Young Citizen of the Year, Courtney Mathew, was co-convenor of the Warrnambool Community Garden, founder of Fruit Rescue and a volunteer with multiple community groups. The Fabrice of Life Festival, named Community Event of the Year, was held last October and encouraged entrants to create wearable artworks. Local Achiever Award winner Ailiche Goddard-Clegg has spent years working to grow and share theatre with the Warrnambool community. Ailiche is also a volunteer board member for Leadership Great South Coast and Beyond the Bell as well as a former Warrnambool Adult Riding Club committee member.

Dog no go zones WITH Warrnambool’s open spaces along the coast and the Merri River especially popular during summer, dog owners are reminded that dogs are not permitted at Stingray Bay, Pickering Point or the South Warrnambool wetlands at any time of the year.

Warrnambool Mayor Cr Ben Blain said that it was a timely message with a number of migratory birds arriving in Warrnambool over summer. “Warrnambool is a big enough place for dogs to be able to exercise without disturbing vulnerable birdlife,” he said. “Our little penguin colony is world famous and keeping dogs away from Stingray Bay and Pickering Point helps to protect them, but there’s also a wide variety of other bird species who nest, raise their young and seek sanctuary in the wetlands of the Merri River or the Marine Sanctuary. “We’ve developed a handy map

that shows you everywhere dogs are permitted, including off-leash areas. “So if you want to make the most of your time outdoors with your dog and help protect native wildlife, visit our website or pick up a hard copy at the Civic Centre at 25 Liebig Street.” Warrnambool Coastcare Landcare Network chairperson Bruce Campbell urged dog owners to do the right thing and avoid taking their dogs to Pickering Point, South Warrnambool Wetlands or Stingray Bay in the Merri Marine Sanctuary. “Merri Marine Sanctuary and surrounds are very special places right next to Warrnambool,” he said. “So too are the South Warrnambool wetlands. “This is why they are a no-go zone for dogs, whether on a lead or not. “At low tide the Stingray Bay beach provides a resting place for many birds, including threatened Hooded Plovers. “At very low tides the last thing we want is for dogs to get across to Middle Island to terrorise Little Penguins and

Course to tackle mental health

YOUNG people living in Moyne Shire will have access to a mental health course to be held in Port Fairy next month.

The free mental health first aid training program will be run by FUSE South West. The program, aimed at young people between the ages of 18-25 years, will help equip participants with skills to

recognise and respond to a friend, colleague or co-worker who may be experiencing or developing a mental health problem. It will also help them gain an understanding of the latest research in the mental health field, and practice mental health first aid skills. Participants will learn the three key actions for helping someone with mental health problems, and how to work

through complex mental health first aid interactions. Moyne Shire mayor Cr Ian Smith said the course would be a great chance for local small businesses to help their young staff members learn essential mental health competencies.

“These are valuable life skills for young people to have, which are relevant to homes, workplaces, schools, universities, sports clubs and more.” The two-day course will run on February 9 and 16 at Port Fairy’s Seacombe House.

“They’ll gain confidence in addressing Both sessions will run from 9am-5pm mental health challenges and promoting and bookings can be made at www. well-being,” he said. moyne.vic.gov.au/FUSE.

Get on your bike

CYCLING enthusiasts looking for their new challenge – and the opportunity to raise funds for a great cause – are encouraged to register now for this year’s ‘Murray to Moyne’ cycle relay. The event, to be held on Saturday, April 6 and Sunday, April 7, will see teams of between five and 30 riders raise funds for their own health related charity such as Cancer Council, the Leukemia Foundation, Beyond Blue or local health services such as those in Warrnambool and Port Fairy. Now in its 37th year, the Murray to Moyne is a 24-hour cycle relay that covers around 520 kilometres from the Murray River to the Moyne River in Port Fairy.

Stage one will start from Mildura or Echuca, stage two will involve a night ride from dusk to Hamilton under lights, and stage three will start at 7am and take riders from Hamilton to Port Fairy. Teams chose their own names and raise funds for their chosen cause, holding fundraising events throughout the year, culminating in the cycle relay. The ride is the brainchild of Graham ‘Woody’ Woodrup who, from the very first ride in 1987, saw potential in the event becoming an annual one – throwing out the challenge to everyone he met to get on a bike and have a go. He also inspired many to be generous with their talents and help others whenever possible. The Murray to Moyne Cycle Relay is

a memorial to a man many regarded as a ‘marathon man of Australian cycling’ and honours his commitment to raising funds for hospitals and health services. The event continues to raise more than $550,000 each year to support various hospitals and health-related organisations across Victoria and New South Wales. It also continues to attract more than 400 cyclists and support crew for the 24-hour event. Anyone wishing to join this year’s ride is urged to email admin@ murraytomoyne.com.au

Music festival next weekend MUSIC lovers will converge on Warrnambool’s Civic Green next weekend for the inaugural Ignite Music Festival. To be held on Saturday, February 3, the festival will showcase the talents of more than a dozen bands and performers from across the region. Festival organisers ‘Convict Class’ are over the moon with the chosen acts and the diversity they will bring. “We are so proud to have jumped in and put this all together, we have so many different styles and music genres on the day that there is literally something for everyone,” Convict Class band member Shane Stenhouse said. “We will have rock, blues, metal, hip hop, country, punk, easy listening and alternative”. Organisers are hoping to make this an annual event and to see it grow each year. “We really want the community to get behind this all-ages event and check out

the exciting talent we have within the south west region,” Shane said. The line-up includes local heavy metal legends ‘The Ascended’ who have toured Australia and internationally, ‘Convict Class’ who will tour parts of England and play the biggest punk festival in the world in 2024, and ‘Whipwerm’ who will be unfortunately playing their last show. Local blues legends, ‘Eddy and the Exciters’, Joe Gardeners new project with the Renovators, Timboon’s finest girl rockers Lisztomania, new country music sensation Michael Honan and the talented boys from Hip Crack will also be there. Upcoming Warrnambool trio The Connection Revue, recent Warrnambool Showdown winners West Grid and local hip hop artist Prosper are all set to shine. Tess O’Connor’s acoustic set and magical voice will also keep audiences entertained. Food and drink will be available on site, however, organisers are also encouraging people to support nearby businesses. The event will run from 12 noon until 10pm.

Moyne CEO steps down MOYNE Shire chief executive Brett Davis has announced his resignation.

Mr Davis informed councillors of his decision earlier this week, which was “reluctantly accepted” by mayor Cr Ian Smith. “While we are saddened by Brett’s departure, council understands and respects his decision and we wish him well as he takes on a role with the state government,” he said. “Brett has made significant contributions during his time as both director and CEO over the past four years.

“He has been instrumental in driving positive change, implementing key initiatives and fostering collaboration among various government departments and councils to enhance the shire’s reputation.” Mr Davis said the decision to leave Moyne wasn’t taken lightly. “It’s a decision I have made for professional and personal reasons and while I’m sad to be leaving, I am looking forward to the next chapter and to seeing where Moyne goes from here,” he said. “Moyne Shire remains in a strong position despite the

ongoing challenges the local government sector faces as a whole but I’ve no doubt it will continue to meet those challenges head on while continuing to deliver crucial services to the community.” Mr Davis thanked councillors Meade, Smith and Foster who had each been mayor during his time at Moyne. He also thanked current and former councillors for their guidance and their dedication to the community. Cr Smith said further announcements would be made in relation to the recruitment of a new CEO, with an interim appointment to be announced next week.

THE Melbourne to Warrnambool entries were rolling in, with the potential Cycling Festival is less than two for some big names to enter the field. weeks away, with preparations in “The National Road Series Teams are full swing for what is sure to be a starting to sign up now,” he said. “Everybody has had a fairly busy week fantastic weekend of cycling. The 108th instalment of the Powercor Melbourne to Warrnambool Cycling Classic will be held on Saturday, February 3, while the Lochard Energy Warrnambool Women’s Classic will take place on Sunday, February 4. The Royal Bikes Port Campbell to Warrnambool Handicap – designed to give amateur riders a taste of the Melbourne to Warrnambool experience – will also be held on Saturday, February 3. Chair of the Warrnambool Citizen’s Road Race Committee Shane Wilson said that

over the Tour Down Under so now they start to look to Cadel’s (Great Ocean Road Race) which is next week, and the Melbourne to Warrnambool. “We’re part of the summer of cycling in Australia, and our event is the last one so we’re hopeful that we’ll get some fairly decent names. We’re talking to some big names at the moment.” Warrnambool deputy mayor Vicki Jellie said that the Warrnambool City Council was a proud, long-term supporter of the event, and she was particularly pleased to see the stand-alone women’s race

continue to gain momentum. “It’s part of our history. Growing up in Warrnambool, you would always walk down to Raglan Parade to watch the end of the race as children, and now here we are and it’s still continuing, so it’s a very important thing and a great event for the city and for the state,” she said. “It draws people from everywhere and the calibre of the cyclists that are involved is just wonderful. “It’s excellent to have the women’s race now in its third year. It’s wonderful for our women to be able to show their strengths in what they can do.” With two massive weekends at Premier Speedway, in addition to the Melbourne to Warrnambool this summer, Cr Jellie emphasised the importance of major

events. “We have some great events in the town – national and international,” she said. “People come from everywhere and people can watch it around the world so it brings something down to Victoria, to the Great Ocean Road, to South West Victoria and to Warrnambool.” The Melbourne to Warrnambool Cycling Classic riders are expected to arrive at the finish line on Raglan Parade near Liebig Street between 2pm and 4pm. Riders in the Warrnambool Women’s Classic are expected to finish between 1pm and 2pm when they race the following day. Both races will be broadcast on SBS On Demand and the SBS Cycling Central Facebook page.

Tayla flies the Aussie flag

W A R R N A M B O O L’ S Tayla Relph has been chosen to compete in the first ever FIM Women’s Circuit Racing World Championship in Europe this year. Tayla is one of only 22 women to make the grade, and the only Australian to qualify. To help her along the way, the Warrnambool City Council will contribute $700 to Tayla’s expenses following her successful application for a grant via council’s individual or group assistance fund. As part of council’s vision for a healthy and active city, grants are available for resident individual athletes competing at elite levels, as part of an affiliated state or national event, or international activity or event. Applications are accepted year-round, with grants of up to $700 for individuals and $1000 for teams available. “A massive thank you to the Warrnambool City Council for jumping on board and granting me these funds,” Ms Relph said. “To be the only Australian selected and to represent Australia in a world championship is a dream come true so it’s such an exciting opportunity and I really am lost for words. “I’ve had so much support in the past week since I’ve announced this and all of the support has meant that I can secure my seat in a world championship, so it’s

21

a fantastic opportunity. “And the calibre of women racing all around the world, it’s just as fast as the men, so even though we have our own women’s championship there are plenty of females all across the world that are racing at the top with the men, myself included here in Australia.” Tayla believes this year’s event will be the first time a world championship has been dedicated solely to all the fastest women. Warrnambool mayor Cr Ben Blain congratulated Tayla on her “monumental achievement”, and said that council was proud to support her. “It’s amazing to see Tayla be able to excel and now to take her talents to the global stage,” he said. “It’s going to be really exciting to watch her over there when she’s competing in Europe. “Tayla has risen to the top and it’s great that we are able to support her with some funds to help her get over there; I really wish her the best and we’ll all be following her journey and cheering her on from Warrnambool.” Races will be covered by Fox Sports and SBS, with full broadcast details to be available closer to the beginning of the Championship. To find out more about sporting grants available to individuals and teams, visit www.warrnambool.vic.gov. au and search “Individual or Group Assistance Fund”.
