Young entrepreneur shines

THE future certainly looks bright for lighting technician, sound engineer and photographer Rory Batten.

The 17 year-old Brauer College student was one of 21 young entrepreneurs to take part in the Warrnambool and Moyne Young Business Leaders Program.

Over three months, participants learned how to build, brand and launch their very own business with support from the industry mentors at BOP Industries.

To date, this start-up has worked with over 100,000 young people around the world.

The program culminated in a pitch night, with Rory’s winning presentation netting him $1,000 in prize money.

Rory’s business, Bat’s Media, specialises in lighting, sound and photography services for events, festivals and gigs.

He said that while the prize money might go towards a new sound desk in the future, the real value came from the program itself.

“I already had my business going, so I wanted to jump into the program and learn how to grow,” he said.

“I learnt how to build a good client base and how to get people’s attention to get my business going.

“The best way for me is social media and word of mouth.

“I liked it because you got to see what other people were thinking of and we

could come together.

“Everyone was supportive of each other and it was like one big happy family.”

His advice to other young people thinking of setting up a business was to just get started, however they can, and then improve as they go.

“If you don’t have a lot of money to start, just start small like I did and look to grow,” he said.

“I started with a used camera, then after a couple of gigs I could upgrade.”

Rory Batten has a bright future thanks in part to the Warrnambool and Moyne Young Business Leaders Program.

Mould and algae forces pool closure

THE recent detection of mould and some algae has resulted in the closure of Belfast Aquatic’s Port Fairy pool and fitness centre.

The decision by Belfast to close the centre has been supported by Moyne Shire Council.

Council has recently commissioned a number of expert reports regarding the facility.

These reports have identified the presence of mould throughout the facility and algae in some parts.

As a result of this discovery, following a period of investigation and consultation, Belfast Aquatics has agreed to close the facility while further testing and remediation works are undertaken.

This decision has been taken following discussions with the Barwon South West Public Health Unit, council’s environmental health officers, various external expert opinions and Belfast Aquatics.

All parties have had to closely balance the benefit of the facility to the community, against the priority of ensuring the health and wellbeing of the community is protected.

Ultimately, it was determined that closure was required.

Moyne Shire Council urges any residents with concerns to refer to the Better Health Channel resources provided by the Department of Health – or attending their GP with any specific health concerns.

Community members are also welcome to address any further concerns directly to council by email to moyne@moyne.vic.org.au

The following links have also been provided by council: Algae: harmful algal blooms/Better Health Channel.

Mould: mould and your health/Better Heath Channel.

Moyne Shire Council: reporting public health concerns.

Belfast Aquatic’s Port Fairy pool and fitness centre is currently closed due to the detection of mould, along with traces of algae in some parts.

Moyne Shire Council Community Update

From the Mayor:

Ngatanwarr, I’m incredibly privileged to have been elected by my fellow Councillors to the position of Mayor for our next term in office.

I’m excited to work alongside Cr Myra Murrihy as Deputy Mayor and thank outgoing Mayor, Cr Karen Foster for guiding us through this first term of a new council. She truly demonstrated how to lead with compassion and kindness.

I’m very appreciative of our unique council and look forward to working together with them.

One of the first major events I’m excited to attend as Mayor is our Community Awards to be held on 26 January 2026.

Nominations are currently open, and I would encourage everyone to put forward those who have made a difference in your community.

I’d especially love to see nominations for young people; to encourage them to keep up the wonderful work they do within our region.

As the weather starts to warm up and it’s time to dust off the boogie board, it means summer is coming and with it holidays and festive season celebrations.

This year our Christmas light trail is going to look a little different as it won’t be a competition. We are looking to share the joy with as many residents as we can and I would like to encourage people to register to get their Christmas lights listed as part of the trail.

It’s one of the best sights come Christmas time with houses lit up across our shire and I cannot wait to see what you all have in store for us this year!!

Summer also means POOLS!! We’re incredibly lucky here in Moyne to have some of the best outdoor pools in the region at Hawkesdale, Macarthur and of course the 50m Mortlake pool. Our teams are busy getting the pools ready for you, to open within the next couple of weeks. Don’t forget to buy your memberships and I hope you all enjoy some fun in the water this summer.

The warmer weather also brings some challenges and that is mostly around fire and fire preparation.

The CFA have confirmed that fire restrictions for Moyne Shire commence at 1am on Monday, 8 December 2025 so there’s still time to get your fire plan finalised and your property cleaned up to ensure a safe summer for you and your family.

I look forward to getting out and around our shire during my time as Mayor and cannot wait to see you at an event or passing through your local town.

Wurruk.

The Black Friday Twilight Market will run from 3.30pm until about 7.30pm tonight, Friday, November 28.

Over 50 market stalls will line Liebig Street and the streets nearby while over 30 local businesses will also be open late.

Visitors can enjoy live music from Mick Hughes, Joseph Lim, Hash Magandy Blues and Celtic Strings.

“It’s the start of a big month for the city centre in the lead up to Christmas, with lots happening.

“It’s all about creating a festive and fun atmosphere and giving people another great reason to spend time in the city centre.”

Rotary needs your help for support kits

THE Rotary Club of Warrnambool, together with Wish Collective, are hoping the generosity of locals will once again shine bright as it appeals for financial assistance to ensure the ongoing success of its pregnancy loss support kits.

These kits, an initiative of Wish Collective, are provided at no cost to individuals and families who experience pregnancy loss - an experience that one in four Australian couples will face.

While emotionally devastating, it is often suffered in silence.

Founded in 2023 by Sarah and Steven Wallace, following

their own experience with multiple losses, Wish Collective has become a local beacon of empathy and advocacy.

From their journey grew a powerful commitment: to make sure no one walks through pregnancy loss alone.

This mission continues through a growing partnership with the Rotary Club of Warrnambool, combining lived experience with Rotary’s long-standing service to community.

“We recently sat down with Sarah, who explained the rationale for assembling and distributing the kits across Warrnambool and surrounding districts,” director of service projects with Rotary Warrnambool Tony Austin said.

“Sarah told us how many people leave clinics or hospitals without the complex and tailored support they need to navigate this space.

“Historically, care has been largely absent, with clinical pathways focused on medical management, while emotional needs went unacknowledged. These kits were created to change that.”

Each kit provides essential practical items, clear pathways to support services and meaningful tokens of comfort.

Sarah distributes the kits through local GPs, hospitals, and applicable specialist services across Warrnambool and surrounding towns, ensuring that every person experiencing pregnancy loss is met with care, recognition, and compassion at the very moment they need it most.

Each pregnancy loss support kit contains a thoughtfully curated range of items including a custom A5 resource explaining ‘what to expect’, linking families to local and national support services, practical necessities such as sanitary pads, a notebook and pen for instructions or emotional processing, and links to resources created specifically for partners, including dads, whose grief is often overlooked.

“These are simple items, but at a time when emotions are raw and clarity is scarce, they bring comfort, grounding, and connection to real help,” Tony said.

“The impact has been immediate and profound.”

Just under 200 kits have already been distributed in the first 12 months of the initiative, reinforcing the need for them.

“The responses from recipients speak for themselves; individuals and families felt seen, supported, valued, and understood at a time when they expected none of it.

“Now, with demand increasing across the wider region, preparations are underway to assemble 500 new kits.

“This reflects both the depth of community need and the urgency of ensuring support is available wherever and whenever pregnancy loss occurs.”

It is estimated the 500 kits will cost around $20,000.

“The Rotary Club of Warrnambool has committed significant funding toward this project however, additional support is still needed,” Tony said.

“We are appealing to the people of Warrnambool and surrounding districts to contribute to this initiative. Every dollar donated will go directly to kit components and distribution, no administrative or labour costs, and all assembly is completed by volunteers.”

Tony said each kit costs around $40 to create, meaning even a modest gift provides direct and immediate support to someone experiencing one of life’s hardest moments.

Donations also help fund education and resources for clinicians and nurses.

“In the past, people often left hospitals or clinics without the complex and tailored support they needed to navigate this space.

“Since the launch of these kits, that narrative has changed dramatically and Sarah is contacted regularly by individuals and families sharing how much the kits, and the supportive care that accompanied them, have meant.”

This initiative sits alongside the recently launched Early Loss Memorial Tree, further strengthening the Rotary Club of Warrnambool’s (and the region’s) commitment to acknowledging bereavement care and early loss with the dignity it deserves.

“By supporting this project, you are helping to break the silence around pregnancy loss,” Tony said.

“You are acknowledging grief that is often hidden and you are showing families that their loss matters and that their community stands with them.”

If you’d like to know how you can get involved or show your support simply email wishcollective@outlook.com or warrnamboolrotary@gmail.com.

Walk shines a light on mental health

WALKERS of all ages are welcome to take part in this weekend’s ‘Walking off the War Within’ event to shine a light on mental health.

This Saturday’s event, which will start at Lake Pertobe in Warrnambool, will focus on the fight against depression and post-traumatic stress disorder.

“This is a family-friendly event for all ages and all fitness levels,” event coordinator Adam Kent said.

“The walk will be followed by free, fun events for the whole family including live music, a sausage sizzle, interactive animal displays, face painting, emergency services displays and more.”

Walking off the War Within is held in memory of Nathan Shanahan, a returned soldier and firefighter, along with other fallen service men and women who have taken their own lives after battling mental health issues.

“The walk is for emergency services and defence force personnel, along with members

of the public, to come together and share the burden and march as one,” Adam said.

“Nathan was an advocate for mental health and PTSD but sadly he lost his battle in December, 2016.

“He started Walking off the War Within and created the image of a soldier with a shadow on his back.”

The walks, many of which now happen at various locations around Australia, ensure that Nathan’s legacy continues.

These walks replicate the walk Nathan completed in April 2015 from Mildura to Adelaide, when he walked over 400 kilometres with a 20+ kilogram pack to raise awareness and funds for PTSD and depression.

Walking off the War Within has transformed from one man’s movement to a series of events, where people of all ages and fitness levels get together and walk and talk about ending the stigma that is often associated with mental health.

“We hope the walk continues

to grow each year so that more people are encouraged to have a conversation about mental health, depression and suicide,” Adam said.

“Be part of this movement and help raise awareness of mental health; it’s a simple way to let those suffering know that there is support and that they are not alone.

“We encourage all participants to ‘wear their colours or uniform’ to display a united front in tackling depression and PTSD head on.”

This Saturday’s challenge is complete the ultimate 20 kilometre walk with a 20kg pack – or walk any distance you can, with or without a pack.

Registrations are free but donations are most welcome.

All proceeds are donated to local charitable organisations that work in the field of mental health and suicide prevention.

This Saturday’s walk will commence at 8.30am at Lake Pertobe.

To book your place simply head to Eventbrite.

New location for Dennington carols

WHILE the location and the name may have changed, the Dennington Carols promises to be every little bit as spectacular this year as in the past.

While many locals are used to making their way to the banks of the Merri for the annual event, this year will see a new location – with the carols to be held in the grounds of St John’s Primary School on Russell Street.

The newly named ‘Dennington Carols’ will start at 6pm next Friday, December 5 – with gates open and food/ drinks available from 5.30pm. This smoke, vape and dog free event will no doubt once again attract large crowds to the town, many dressed in bright Christmas carols ready for a wonderful family night out.

The Dennington Community Association is once again teaming up with the Warrnambool Lions to bring some festive cheer to our community with a joyful night

of Christmas carols.

“After about 25 wonderful years of Carols by the Merri, we’re moving up the hill to St John’s Primary School, Russell Street, Dennington,”

Dennington Community Association secretary Sarah Huntley said.

“But while the name and venue have changed, the community spirit and Christmas magic remains the same!

“We’d love everyone to come along, spread a picnic rug, and enjoy a relaxed evening of music and fun.”

A barbecue will operate throughout the night to keep hunger at bay and there will also be coffee, cakes, slices and icecream available for purchase.

The carols will start at 6pm, with a fantastic line-up of local talent (and one very special guest), hosted once again by the always-entertaining Richard Ziegler. Entry is a gold coin donation, with proceeds going to the Wish Collective.

Event coordinator Adam Kent is looking forward to this weekend’s event in Warrnambool.

‘Tent city’ in Koroit as cyclists arrive

ALMOST 2,000 cyclists rode their way in to Koroit earlier this week as part of this year’s Great Vic Bike Ride.

The ride, which began in Mortlake on Monday morning, will take participants on a five-day journey, covering 364 kilometres.

According to chief executive of Bicycle Network, Alison McCormack, participants will have stop-overs at three towns and will enjoy “loop days” on two of those days.

“The 2025 ride features Great Ocean Road coastlines, cliffs and winding country roads – this is what bucket-list biking is all about,” she said.

“We have 1900 people joining us, including over 1500 bike riders, volunteers, staff and contractors.

“It’s an amazing adventure for our big extended family which also includes 200 volunteers and a further 200 staff and contractors. Local communities, councils and authorities will play a vital part in helping us create one of the world’s great bike rides.”

Day one last Monday saw the

group travel from Mortlake to Koroit.

Tuesday was spent as a ‘loop ride’ from Koroit to Port Fairy, Tower Hill and along the coast.

Day three on Wednesday took cyclists from Koroit to Port Campbell along the Great Ocean Road.

“We will spend Thursday doing a loop ride from Port Campbell, stopping at the 12 Apostles and Timboon before heading to Camperdown for the final day on Friday.”

The TAC (Transport Accident Commission) is the new naming rights partner of the iconic Great Vic, with the message ‘Be Seen, Be Safe. Share the Road.’

“The TAC is proud to partner with Bicycle Victoria for this ride; an event that encourages safe, sustainable travel and brings communities together,” TAC chief executive officer Tracey Slatter said.

“Our message is simple: Be Seen. Be Safe, Share the Road, because every rider deserves to enjoy the journey and return home safely.”

If you are looking to book your work end of year function, Noodledoof is the place to finish 2025 in style.

Our flexiable and stylish taproom space can cater for groups of up to 100 people, offering up a canapé -style menu, curated drinks or intimate sit down menu with guided tastings.

Did someone say drinks? With 11 taps pouring quality crafted beers and spirits, plus a bunch of local wines, there’s a drinks package for everyone - even if beer is not your thing.

Two year-old Frankie Ruijgrok was one of the youngest ‘cyclists’ on this year’s ride – and was happy to take in the sights from a seat on his dad Koen’s bike, while mum Elsie road alongside. Also travelling with the trio (but fast asleep in his ‘trailer’ attached to Koen’s bike) was five year-old Murphy.
McKinnon Secondary College had a team of almost 90 students on the ride, including (from left) Nicholas Conroy, Hayley Johnston-Allen, Ella Malhotra and Adele Brown. Volunteers and staff from the Bicycle Network enjoyed greeting cyclists each day.

Nullawarre Primary celebrates 150 years

NULLAWARRE & District Primary

School has celebrated its 150th anniversary.

The school community celebrated this special milestone in style last Friday, bringing together past and present students, families, staff and locals.

The day began with school tours and historical displays, showcasing photos, stories and artefacts from across the school’s long history.

“Visitors enjoyed seeing how the school has grown and changed over the decades,” school principal Denise Kelly said.

“The milestone was a proud moment for our small, rural school.

“It was incredibly special to see so many people return to celebrate with us. Our school has been at the heart of this community for 150 years and last Friday really highlighted the strength of those connections.”

Spreading Christmas cheer

THE Lions Club of Warrnambool is once again hoping visitors to Gateway Plaza will help spread some Christmas cheer this season.

As has become tradition, the Lions organisation is once again selling Christmas cakes and puddings in the lead-up to Christmas Day as one of their major fundraisers.

A stall has been set up inside Warrnambool’s Gateway Plaza in the hope that visitors will purchase a cake or pudding, or make a donation that will help others in need.

Once again a giant raffle – with the chance to win a giant hamper filled with

loads of goodies for the entire family – is a feature of the stall.

All money raised from the Christmas raffle, along with the sale of cakes and puddings, allows the club to continue its projects within the local community.

“We thoroughly enjoy volunteering and giving back to our community; it’s all about helping others less fortunate and giving support to those in need so what better time to do that than at Christmas,” member Sue Amos said.

“The Lions cakes and puddings have become staples in many homes across the district so we encourage everyone to pop in to the Plaza in the lead up to Christmas and make a purchase if they can.”

Lions Club of Warrnambool members Tom Fitzgerald, Mark Croucher (president), Don Harris, Maureen Capizzi and Kevin Fuller greet visitors to Gateway Plaza at their ‘pop up stall.’

New Price Place units to support independent living

FOUR new residential units will provide supported independent living accommodation for six residents with a disability under a new partnership in Warrnambool.

Southern Stay Disability Services has signed a collaboration agreement with Supported Disability Accommodation (SDA) provider, Vera Living, to provide Supported Independent Living (SIL) services for the residents.

It is the first time the organisations have joined forces and will boost housing options for people living with a disability in the Warrnambool region.

The new independent living units in Price Place, costing $2.2 million, include two units for one resident and two units for two residents.

Southern Stay CEO Jason Fleming said the new units had passed NDIS registration and were now ready for use.

“This is a great opportunity for Southern Stay to work with a reputable SDA provider to support people living with a disability in Warrnambool,” Mr Fleming said.

“This project aligns closely with our purpose to empower choice, foster inclusion and celebrate achievement in our community.”

Mr Fleming said there was a growing need for purpose-built properties to support people with disabilities in contemporary living environments built specifically to suit their needs.

Southern Stay staff will provide 24-hour support, tailored to individual residents needs and assist them with daily tasks to live as independently as possible.

Vera Living CEO Jacob Collier said Warrnambool was a vibrant and growing regional hub and Vera Living was proud to be contributing to its future by delivering highquality, accessible homes.

“Our commitment goes beyond meeting the highest accessibility standards, we’re focused on creating homes that foster independence, dignity, and a better quality of life for NDIS participants,” Mr Collier said.

The accommodation suits participants with approved SDA funding.

People interested in learning more about the accommodation or applying for one of the places can visit www.veraliving.com.au.

Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) under the NDIS is a tailored housing support designed for individuals with extreme functional impairments or very high support needs.

SDA homes feature accessible design elements such as wide doorways, assistive technology, and robust safety features to enable greater independence and facilitate the delivery of other supports.

Funded through a participant’s NDIS plan, SDA does not cover daily support services (like SIL), but rather the physical dwelling itself, with participants contributing a capped rent amount.

Supported Independent Living (SIL) is a NDIS-funded support designed for people with higher support needs who require help with daily tasks to live as independently as possible.

SIL includes assistance with personal care, cooking, cleaning, medication management, and skill development, and can be delivered in shared homes or individual living arrangements.

Fire period announced

WARRNAMBOOL City and Moyne Shire councils will officially enter the ‘Fire Danger Period’ from 1am on Monday, December 8.

Residents in these areas are encouraged to prepare their properties ahead of the Fire Danger Period (FDP) coming into effect.

CFA deputy chief officer (south west region) Adrian Gutsche said now was the time to remove dead and excess vegetation from around your property and to get your family fire ready.

“While we’ve had some welcomed rain recently, we are still concerned this has caused additional grass growth, and as we head into warmer weather, this will soon dry out and add to the already underlying fire risk,” Mr Gutsche said.

“We’re really encouraging residents to keep their grass short, clear out their gutters and ensure any private burn-offs are completed safely and responsibly before restrictions come into effect.

“Using council green waste disposal services or returning mulched vegetation to gardens away from the house is a great way to dispose of your green waste.”

A recent 2,401-hectare fire in Victoria’s far

south-west serves as a reminder of just how easily bushfires can spread through thick dead vegetation in drought conditions, even with high levels of moisture from recent rainfall.

“While it is looking greener in our region, underneath it is still dry, and on hot, windy days grassfires could ignite and travel quickly.

“We ask that residents do not get complacent and remain informed via the VicEmergency App and are aware of the fire danger ratings in their local area.”

Mr Gutsche encouraged families to sit down and discuss what their plan will be this summer should a fire arise.

Those needing to burn-off around their properties are reminded to check weather conditions are suitable before lighting up.

Those conducting burn-offs must notify authorities online at the Fire Permits Victoria website (www.firepermits.vic.gov.au), or by calling 1800 668 511.

Lighting fires in the open without a permit can bring a penalty of more than $21,800 and/or 12 months imprisonment.

Campfires are permitted under certain conditions (for a full list visit cfa.vic.gov.au/ can) and farmers can find legal guidelines and practical advice at cfa.vic.gov.au/farms.

PORT Fairy Little Athletics Club members attempted new personal best times on the club’s new hurdles last Friday night.

In perfect weather conditions, around 70 athletes took advantage of the chance to test themselves on the new hurdles, purchased thanks to a grant from Pacific Blue.

While the wind proved tricky at times, the club was grateful for the assistance of several helpers who made the event run smoothly.

Thanks to all athletes and parent helpers for their support with the track and field events last Friday night for week seven of competition.

Many personal bests, smiles and high fives were seen all around – with long jump, shot put and sprints filling out the night. Participants also enjoyed drinks and a sausage before heading home. With the Christmas break fast approaching, families are reminded of the following dates:

Friday, November 28 week eight (program one).

Friday, December 5 week nine (program two) with an early start of 4pm due to Port Fairy’s ‘Carols by the Bluestone.’ Friday, December 12 week 10 of competition (Christmas celebration night –program three, dress in Christmas clothes). There will be no athletics from December 19 through to January 23.

Jericho Cup this weekend

ALL roads lead to the Warrnambool racecourse this weekend for the running of the annual Jericho Cup.

Visitors will have the chance to experience one of the most unique country race days, with the staging of the 2025 Haymes Paint Jericho Cup Day this Sunday, November 30.

Run annually since 2018 on the fourth Sunday after the Melbourne Cup, the Jericho is steeped in history and tradition.

Approaching the end of the first world war, the Australian Light Horse were planning a major offensive against the Turkish empire.

In order to lull the enemy into believing nothing unusual was afoot, a race meeting was organised on the eve of the assault.

The main race was called The Jericho Cup and was ran over three miles of desert sands.

The winner was Bill the Bastard – since regarded as probably Australia’s greatest war horse.

Today, the Jericho Cup honours Bill the Bastard, the Australian Light Horsemen and their magnificent mounts.

It is run over a distance of approximately 4,600m and will once again, this Sunday, no doubt attract another quality field of starters.

Northern Raiders Super Smash champions

THE 2025 Super Smash cricket event made a welcome return to the Purnim Recreation Reserve last Sunday.

In near perfect conditions on Rodger Henderson Oval, exciting cricket was played that entertained the crowd.

Multiple Warrnambool Moyne District Cricket Association (WMDCA) under 11s fixtures were also played on the adjoining Peter McDonald Oval during the morning, adding to the atmosphere.

Several WMDCA and South West Cricket clubs were represented and provided Super Smash teams. This included players from Ecklin, Koroit, Mortlake, Merrivale, Northern Raiders, Pomborneit, Spring Creek, Warrnambool, West Warrnambool and Woorndoo.

After a hotly contested competition, Northern Raiders’ teammates Bailey Brooks and Ranil Rasanga were crowned champions after the grand final.

“Unfortunately, we had some highly credentialled team withdrawals leading into Sunday and even a couple of late scratchings on the morning,” Northern Raiders Cricket Club spokesperson Peter McDonald said.

“But that’s just part of the competition backing up from club fixtures on the Saturday; injuries happen.

“Bailey and Ranil went in with no expectations, they only entered on the morning. They won their preliminary rounds without any fanfare; they played the prefect game plan to take out the title.”
