WELCOME!
“For what do we live, but to make sport for our neighbours, and laugh at them in our turn?”
- Jane Austin, Mr. Bennet, Pride and Prejudice
Welcome to the fifth and final production of our Mainstage series here at the Sagebrush Theatre! We are thrilled to partner with Richmond’s Gateway Theatre to bring this production to life.
The work of Jane Austen is widely loved, and the sensibility –and sense! – of her writing makes it the perfect fit for our spring production. Pride and Prejudice remains one of the most cherished novels of all time, full of wit, romance, and sharp social commentary.
Kate Hamill, an acclaimed playwright and actor, is known for her bold, feminist adaptations of classic literature. Her works bring fresh energy to timeless stories, and her adaptation of Pride and Prejudice embraces the spirit of Austen with a playful, high-energy approach that highlights the novel’s humor, heart, and biting social critique.
Under the direction of Scott Bellis, whose sharp wit and keen sense of humour are a perfect match for this script, we are assured this production will be brought to life with both charm and theatrical flair.
Thank you for joining us! We’re excited to welcome you back for Krystle Dos Santos’ Motown Get Down, our final production of the season at the Pavilion Theatre, opening April 29. And stay tuned—subscriptions for our groundbreaking 50th anniversary season will be available soon!

Matt Eger, Executive Director

The Comazzetto team hopes you enjoy the show!

DIRECTOR’S NOTE
Welcome to this colourful and vibrant re-imagining of Jane Austen’s timeless (and timely) novel Pride and Prejudice. As I write this, I am preparing for rehearsals with a wonderful team of actors and creatives. It’s always an exciting time. The set and costumes are under construction; props are being gathered and built by the dedicated WCT team; and the actors are poring over their scripts with as much anticipation as the Bennet sisters at the prospect of a summer ball at Netherfield.
This bright and bold adaptation by playwright Kate Hamill retains all the familiar and well-loved characters of Austen’s story: the wilful and witty Lizzy, the stoic and handsome Mr. Darcy, the histrionic Mrs. Bennet, and the roguish Mr. Wickham, to name a few, but shakes off 200 years of historical dust with a burst of comic electricity and contemporary sensibility. Jane Austen’s desire for us to recognize ourselves through (or in spite of) our feelings for others, however, still lies at the centre of this romantic Regency era adventure.
English society in the early 1800s was a labyrinth of ridiculously complicated social rules. Are our times any different? What games must we play, whether we are fitted for them or not? What traps are laid before us? And what can we do about them?
On a less serious note, there are far more characters in this story than actors to play them all. That’s by design. I hope you enjoy our efforts to accommodate that challenge as much as we do.
It’s always a treat to work at WCT. Since first seeing a show at the Sagebrush way back in 1989, I have admired the company and the support the people of Kamloops show for the live performing arts. Thanks for being here today.
