A MESSAGE FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

Well, we are truly off and running! After inviting in a show that had rehearsed elsewhere, on the second leg of its run, we’ve all been very excited to have the energy of a full company at work here in our own building. Anne of Green Gables was an inspired choice to celebrate our 50th season at WCT. It was the first full musical produced at (then) Western Canada Theatre Company, and I think it gave the company and the town a taste of what they were capable of and what they might be able to have right here at home. It must have sparked some magic because 50 years later, here we are!

The beautiful heart behind this story, behind Anne’s search for a family and community to belong to and to serve, is one that speaks directly to my core. I think we all understand the need to feel seen, to feel like we’re a part of something. And it is wonderful to revel with Anne in the beauty and poetry of every piece of creation. It is a story that has had a lasting influence on generations of young girls in Canada particularly, and director Erin McGrath is one of them. She has such affection for the story and works with such a sense of responsibility to its creator and her legacy that I can’t help feeling like we are all in for a real holiday treat. And it is with some pride that I recognize the work of local Kamloops designers on this stage. An important part of the mission for Matt and I at WCT is to make it possible for creative people to live and work close to home, so we are thrilled to support the work of talented costume and set designers like Marian Truscott and Ross Nichol. We all grow by supporting each other. I feel sure Anne would agree.

The season is far from over though! We still have Casey & Diana coming in the New Year, directed by our own Matt Eger, then Holly Lewis’s hysterical farce The Fiancée, before we wrap up the season at the Sagebrush with Mark Crawford’s touching play about love and longevity, The Golden Anniversaries. At the Pavilion we are looking forward to spring when we get to present a world premiere created by our Associate Artistic Director, Cheyenne Scott. Wolf Cull is an immersive experience, in the round, with stylized movement that explores the power and healing of Indigenous women through their relationship with the land surrounding the Kamloops area.

And to finish the year right, we’re preparing a special event to celebrate our 50th Anniversary! Breaking Ground: 50 Years of WCT is a party and a fundraiser that will feature some of your favourite performers from past seasons on a musical journey through 50 years of brilliant theatre here at WCT. There will be cocktails, local food vendors, and a disco dance party! April 24, 2026, Save the Date!

DIRECTOR’S NOTE

Anne has been a part of my life since I was six years old, curled up in bed with my three older sisters, being read to out loud on the East Coast. Painfully shy, I looked to Anne as a model. I proudly wore my straw hat with bright red yarn braids, feeling empowered—almost magical—with the confidence it imbued.

When I went back to the novel as an adult, I felt the same delight and magic fill me, but this time for different reasons. That is the phenomenal gift Lucy Maud Montgomery has given us: a character who ages with us, who meets us where we are—someone we can love and continue to share with the next generation.

I believe Anne endures because she gives us permission to be gloriously, messily human. She allows us to see and celebrate platonic love in all its forms—that love need not be romantic to be life-changing, and that families don’t always look how we expect them to. The pure devotion and joy of Anne and Diana’s bond celebrates the intensity of female friendship—a soul-level connection. It’s a love story of equals, rooted in imagination, loyalty, and delight.

In a time that often feels cynical, noisy, and dominated by screens, Anne reminds us not to lose sight of the power of empathy, wonder, curiosity, and imagination. She doesn’t curate content—she feels and shares everything. She looks up and takes in the incredible beauty that surrounds her. She doesn’t pass by nature; she’s in an active dialogue with it—naming it, befriending it. She chooses joy and hope—something we all need.

So, with that, I will leave you with Anne’s words that hit me so powerfully as I struggle to find my way—not as a little girl, but as an adult who is so grateful for her wisdom and friendship:

“My future seemed to stretch out before me like a straight road. I thought I could see along it for many a milestone. Now there is a bend in it. I don’t know what lies around the bend, but I’m going to believe that the best does.” – Anne Shirley

ANNE OF GREEN GABLES –THE MUSICAL: FAMILIAR, YET SURPRISING

Repeated exposure to a narrative can yield new findings every time, particularly when that narrative has been adapted to various forms. My own previous encounters with Anne Shirley include the original novel and the rest of the book series, adapted works for young readers, a television series, and adaptations of her story for stage (such as Anne, WCT’s 2000 co-production with TheatreOne, adapted by Paul Ledoux and directed by David Mann).

Reading the script Anne of Green Gables – The Musical with an eye to the reasons for the play’s enduring popularity (productions include at the Charlottetown Festival almost annually since 2019, in London, Off-Broadway, Adelaide, and at Western Canada Theatre in 1975) proved both a refresher and a surprise. The experience reminded me of the roles both the plucky underdog and the power of imagination play in Anne’s story. The strength of the satire in this version was a pleasant surprise.

Of course, the Harron/Campbell/Moore production we are experiencing presents the story of a plucky underdog—a universally appealing character type. Anne’s past at the orphanage leaves her confused about Christianity and many other mainstays of Avonlea society. Her red hair doesn’t help her fit in; nor does the fact that Matthew and Marilla get not the boy they ordered to help with the farm work but a girl apparently ill suited to both farm work and housework. Yet Anne overcomes all and doesn’t so much fit into Avonlea society as make it fit to her.

Certainly, the imagination that Anne has in abundance and is sorely lacking in most of Avonlea society is central to her appeal. A romantic, she thinks way outside of the community’s box. I must add that Anne does not act entirely alone on the imagination score. The play does an especially good job of conveying Miss Stacey’s influence. With her fondness for non-traditional assignments and getting the classroom outside, the teacher is a catalyst, a harbinger of a new age in the town, and Anne proves an exemplary student.

My favourite words in the play are spoken in Act 2, Scene 7. Here, the women of the town provide the set up to the song “Prince Edward Island” as they discuss the pageant Miss Stacey’s students have written. Mrs. Pye comments, “Isn’t that clever? They wrote all their own history.” Hurrah for imagination in education!

What struck me most in the Harron/Campbell/Moore script is the satire. Scholar Irene Gammel has pronounced L.M. Montgomery “a consummate social satirist,” and the trio makes the most of this talent. The “Great Workers for the Cause” like Mrs. Lynde parade their righteousness while snooping and prying into every detail of their neighbours’ lives. They are also only too eager to pass judgment on, and even incite fear about, the outsider. The script shines in its incisive critique of the status quo.

I trust you will find Anne of Green Gables – The Musical familiar, refreshing, and surprising. Such is the power of art.

BUILDING A LEGACY

When Anne of Green Gables – The Musical first graced the Western Canada Theatre stage in 1975, it marked the beginning of something extraordinary. It was the very first professional mainstage musical ever produced by WCT—a show that captured hearts and helped launch a theatre that would go on to inspire and engage our community for decades. Among the cast members that year was Valerie Easton who stepped into the bright, curious world of Anne Shirley—a role full of imagination, determination, and heart.

Fifty years later, Valerie returns to the very stage where it all began, this time as the choreographer helping to bring Anne of Green Gables to life once again for WCT’s 50th Anniversary Season. It’s a full-circle moment that beautifully reflects what Western Canada Theatre is all about: nurturing creativity, building lifelong connections, and inspiring generations of artists and audiences alike.

For fifty years, WCT has been a place where stories take root and grow—onstage, backstage, and in the community. The people who once dreamed big under our stage lights are now shaping the future of theatre for the next generation. As we celebrate this milestone season, we invite you to help us build the next 50 years of storytelling, creativity, and community connection. Your support ensures that WCT continues to be a place where talent is discovered, artistry is nurtured, and the magic of theatre continues to ripple through the lives it touches. Together, we can keep the circle growing.
