PRESCHOOL 2019 - 2020 School Year

Keppler Academy Introduction & Philosophy

The West Chicago Park District’s Keppler Academy Preschool focuses on the developmental needs of children from three to five years old. Keppler Academy is designed to give children the tools and experiences necessary to assure a positive transition to kindergarten. Our program offers a warm, nurturing, and friendly environment where children can explore, create, and flourish. Socialization skills and independence are developed through a variety of daily skills and exercises. Our philosophy is that all children learn through hands-on experiences, exploration, and positive interactions with others. Every child is unique and will develop at their own pace. We foster an environment that will help all children succeed emotionally, physically, and socially. Every child has their own learning style and we give many options to explore and build on those abilities. (GR)

Registration, Payment & Additional Information Registration for the 2019/20 school year begins February 25 for returning students, March 1 for residents and March 8 for non-residents. Judo is two individuals who, by gripping uniforms, use forces of balance, power, timing and physics to subdue their opponents. Judo does not use striking techniques of any kind. It’s a purely defensive sport, based on other’s aggressive moves. It involves techniques of throwing, grappling, submission holds. It all starts from a standing position and then moves to the ground for submission techniques or to pin your opponent. Promotions are based on competitions from green, brown and black belt ranks. Uniforms are mandatory as are four competitions per year. Great cross training for wrestlers. (JU)

ADULT PROGRAMS & TRIPS Line Dancing at Any Age

Frank Lloyd Wright Architectural Tour

Would you like to dance, but don’t have a partner? No problem! Line Dancing is a pattern of steps done over and over again throughout the course of a song which individuals can do WITHOUT a partner. We’ll dance to country music PLUS other types. All the steps will be thoroughly explained. You’ll develop your inner dancer, gain confidence, & make lifelong friendships in a safe & personal environment. Wear smooth-soled shoes; no experience necessary. Supplemental online instruction available; taught by DANCE WITH JANET. (ML)

Oak Park is home to the world’s largest collection of buildings designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and the group will tour three of Wright’s structures on this exciting day trip. The guided tour begins at Frank Lloyd Wright’s first home and studio. Wright used his first home to experiment with design concepts that contain the seeds of his architectural philosophy. In his adjacent studio, Wright and his associates developed a new American architecture - the Prairie style. The group will board the bus again and travel a few blocks to our third tour; Unity Temple. The harmony of the building’s strikingly geometric architecture and decorative elements exemplifies Wright’s theory of organic design. Unity Temple announced a new era of innovation in modern architecture. On both tours trained interpreters offer insights into Wright’s family life and architectural career. Lunch is on your own at the Chicago’s Home of Chicken and Waffles. (ML)

FITNESS Intermediate Yoga

Yin Yoga

Have you practiced yoga for a while? Are you an athlete who wants to try something new? This class is designed for students who have a good understanding of basic yoga poses and wish a medium intensity practice with some challenging postures. Yoga mats and props provided. (KK)

Enjoy the healing benefits of Yin Yoga for both the mind and the body. This style of yoga is a more meditative approach with a physical focus that goes much deeper to access the deep connective tissues within the body that encompass a joint, such as the hips, pelvis, and lower spine. Yin Yoga postures are done mainly on the floor, and are unique in that you are asked to relax in the posture, soften the muscles and focus on the breath as you hold each posture for several minutes. As one ages, flexibility in the joints decreases, and Yin Yoga is a wonderful way to maintain that flexibility and live a healthy way of life. (KK)
