Plan to save Leentjiesklip chalets EVAN NAUDÉ LANGEBAAN – Chalet owners at the Leentjiesklip holiday resort may soon lose more than just the money they spent, as the eroded coastline creeps closer to their homes. On 10 October Weslander reported on the severe erosion that is claiming more and more of the coastline in front of the resort. “We love this place but we can’t keep spending money without help from the municipality,” said Nollies van der Merwe of the Leentjiesklip Home Owners’ Association. “We’ve spent close to half a million rand from our own pockets since 2008.” According to him the chalet owners have brought in 70 tons of sand to strengthen the

dune line, planted grass and other plants to stabilise loose soil and built a secondary set of stairs that has since been washed away. They also installed stormwater drains to direct flow away from the area and metal rods and netting as an emergency measure. Chairman Peter Jack owns one of the chalets closest to the eroding coastline. “The high-water mark is a technical issue,” said Jack. “It becomes a case of whose responsibility it is.” Jack believes action needs to be taken immediately, regardless of budget restraints. “The council is aware of the problem, so they need to act. It will cost a whole lot more once people start losing their cottages.” In April 2012, the chalet owners met with Saldanha Bay Municipality’s Deputy Mayor, Rosil Jager, on the is-

Be“too cool to smoke” this month Be Cancer Aware, one of South Africa’s cancer information hubs, will be kicking off their second annual “Too cool to smoke” campaign as part of International Lung Cancer Awareness Month. The initiative invites smokers in South Africa to quit for the day on Thursday 14 November. According to Dr. Georgia Demetriou, an oncologist at Wits Donald Gordon Medical Centre, “the burden of lung cancer is high, but awareness of the disease is very low as compared with other diseases such as breast cancer. “This is why it’s important to get involved in awareness initiatives to help educate and inform people about this deadly disease, where early detection is key.”

By quitting even for a day, smokers will be taking an important step towards a healthier life . Within 20 minutes of quitting, blood pressure returns to normal, and within eight hours, the carbon monoxide level in the blood drops. After 48 hours, the ability to smell and taste is improved. From two weeks to three months after quitting, lung function increases. Non-smokers can also get involved and help promote the cause by donning their

shades to work on the 14th and showing the world that they are “too cool to smoke”. You can also upload photos to the Be Cancer Aware Facebook page and motivate others to do the same. Tobacco use can cause serious health implications and kills nearly six million people per year. About one person dies every six seconds due to tobacco, which accounts for one in ten adult deaths worldwide . With this in mind, it is no wonder that research has shown that at least 80% of lung cancer diagnoses are attributed to cigarette smoking. Lung cancer and other respiratory problems can also affect non-smokers, as there is no safe level of exposure to tobacco. Toxins from the cigarettes are able to enter the bloodstream and contribute to the thickening of artery

walls, which accelerates the process of various heart and lung problems . Furthermore, studies illustrate that lung cancer is no longer a male-dominated disease – there has been an increase in female smokers, leading to a rise in the number of women who are developing this type of cancer as well . A recent survey by the Medical Research Council showed that nearly half of Western Cape learners in grade 8 to 10 smoke. Adding to this, research conducted for the 2008 National Youth Risk Behaviour Survey found that one fifth of South African high school pupils are smokers. Spring clean to keep snakes at bay As the cold wet winter comes to an end, spring brings with it a new season in the circle of life. Reptiles such as snakes are coming out of hibernation to hunt for a much-needed spring meal. Snakes provide an important natural balance in our environment, controlling vermin, rodents and other disease-carrying pests. A snake’s diet varies from species to species but includes rats, mice, birds, moles, slugs, snails, frogs etc. Snakes are encouraged into built-up areas by the abundance of their food source. Humans unintentionally create a snake- friendly environment with unkempt or overgrown gardens containing building material, rubble or compost. This, in turn, is a

suitable habitat for those little pests like rats, mice and exotic birds. Snakes are attracted to neglected areas for food and to avoid human confrontation. There is no real way of keeping snakes off your property, but if you keep your grass cut short, trees well trimmed and clean up all building rubble, snakes are less likely to make your property their home. Very few snake species could be considered a threat to humans, as most do not have venom glands. Contrary to popular belief, a snakes’ instinct is to defend itself rather than to attack. As such, killing a snake is nothing to be proud of as you are dealing with an animal that has no arms, fingers, feet, legs or eyelids. Let us not succumb to ignorance by destroying what we

Cape cobra. fear, but rather learn more about snakes, their behaviour and why they are important cohabitants and why we should look out for them. – Shaun MacLeod, coordinator of the Western Cape

Snake Rescue Volunteer Team . For more information about educational awareness talks, demos and training contact Shaun on 082 532 5033 or email MacAdderbite@yahoo.com.

Prepare for ‘silly season’ visitors Summer’s here and the kites are up again in Langebaan. Restaurants are abuzz with foreign languages and traffic is on the increase over weekends. This signals the coming of the holiday season when Langebaan is alive with economic potential. The month ahead will see a hive of activity as the village prepares itself for the silly season. Langebaners have two choices: be irritated by the holiday onslaught, or join in the fun and have a great festive season. One thing is for sure, the silly season will happen and we all have a role to play in welcoming the many visitors to our village. The Saldanha Bay Tourism Organisation (SBTO) is hard at work preparing for the holiday makers whilst the Community Policing Forum (CPF) is preparing for their safety and security. The police, pro-

vincial and municipal traffic departments, municipal law enforcement and the West Coast National Park will join forces to enforce law and order over the season. The Saldanha Bay Municipality (SBM) will be training eight selected members of the local youth as temporary law enforcement officers to assist with this important task. The SBTO and CPF are planning a “welcome the visitors” operation to kick the season off. The municipality will be making a major effort to ensure that the village is groomed and clean. I would like to request Langebaners to assist in this task as the SBM does not have the manpower to get to every nook and cranny. Firstly, you can assist by looking after your own home patch and pavement. Secondly, Langebaners living next to green areas can join hands and “chicken parade” their adjacent open spaces. Refuse bags can be placed at predetermined areas where the SBM will collect them. Should the refuse in a particular area be too much please notify the Langebaan SBM office so that special ar-

rangements can be made. We need to complete this exercise by the second week of December. Please feel free to contact me if any coordination is required. A public meeting was held on 28 October with the residents of Seaview Park and Langebaan North. The meeting was attended by the Executive Mayor, Francois Schippers, members of the Mayoral Committee responsible for service delivery, senior SBM officials and over 100 residents. Various service delivery issues were discussed of which sport facilities, urban planning for Langebaan North and the Human Settlement Plan were the most contentious. The SBM sees the problem areas put forward in a serious light and will make a concerted effort to address them. Community feedback

meetings in this regard will follow. An accusation was made that this meeting was utilised for political gain. This is refuted outright. The most senior role players who must address the issues were present. My December “Town Talk” article will address the impact of the recently approved Industrial Development Zone (IDZ) on Langebaan. My “Champion” for the month is Coral Warner who raised R200 000 for Hospice and does not expect anything in return. Thumbs up for Langebaan! Informed, prepared and involved The Langebaan Ratepayers’ and Residents’ Association (LRRA) is pleased to report on the following:

NUWE SWEETPAKKE: Clive van Groeningen van die West Coast Community Trust/Mykonos Casino het Langebaan Athletics Club met nuwe sweetpakke geborg. FOTO’S: NICKY BESTER

Property rates process: We would like to remind all ratepayers who appealed against their 2012 property valuation that the Appeal Board sits on 18 and 19 November 2013 in Vredenburg from 08:00 at council chambers. Be aware that your appeal will be heard on the date as stated on the notice you received from the Saldanha Bay Municipality. The hearing might be extended to 20 November should it be deemed necessary. Uitsig and Melck Street steps: The council engineers met with abutting residents on this matter in late October. I managed to present a userfriendly design, drawn by Creative Profile Town Planners, and submitted the proposed design to the engineers. The design will form part of a uniform future tourism infrastructure theme that will not only be functional, but also esthetically pleasing. The proposal was presented by the town engineers to the public who attended the meeting and was unanimously accepted. Work should start early in January 2014. Strandloper sewage /stormwater outflow : We reported last month that the LRRA still questions the legality of the discharge of treated sewage and now in addition thereto some storm water into the Langebaan Lagoon, a Ramsar site and internationally recognised Marine Protected Area. These activities were recently reported to various environmental law enforcement agencies who visited the area and are currently inves-

tigating the matter. IDZ : The Saldanha Bay IDZ was recently announced and declared open by President Zuma on 31 October 2013 . This event with fanfare and politicking confirmed the fears we continuously reported on during the comment period on the IDZ and its feasibility. We hope that we shall never get to a point when we ask: “How did we allow this to happen yet again?” This blatant and disgraceful abuse of state

and public assets for cheap political gain rudely reminded me of the recent and similar incident when our own ward committee public meeting was hijacked to serve as a platform for party politics. Progress: Although the final outcome of the paving project in Main and Dwars Streets fell way short of the initial plans presented by Creative profile (due to we were told bugdetary reasons), we see that the paving is now finally completed a mere four months after inception. The parking areas still await the ashpalt to finish the job. The public toilets at Kaktus sewage pump still await official opening. The overdue “new” street lights for Alabama Street are to be installed soon. We are still in the dark with the Sanderling lights for the cul se sac turning circle. Closure: We invite all ratepayers and residents to the LRRA information and report back meeting on 21 November 2013 at the Langebaan Town Hall at 19:00. Jaco Kotze – Chairperson (LRRA).

Langebaan Nuus 7 November, 2013

Angling is getting back to normal October has been back to normal. The main large fish taken were kob, mostly from the Spreeuwalle area. The best fish was a specimen of 27 kg caught by Michael Viljoen. However there were also kob caught south, especially for those ardent anglers who are prepared to get up out of a warm bed at 02:00 and face the wind and single-digit temperatures. These fish are a much nicer eating fish as they ranged from 4–6 kg. Some geelbek were caught among the kob but, in contrast to last year, I have not heard of the anglers having a problem with elf.

White stumpnose have made their appearance and good numbers have been caught. Generally the size have been smaller than previous years and only during the second spring-tide period were large fish caught. The best specimen of the month was a fish of 1,7 kg. During the first half of the month a couple of steenbras were caught, but they now seem to have disappeared. There is a problem which is starting to worry me – the number of professional boats that have been targeting stumpnose over the last three months. The reason for this is that there has been nothing else for them to catch as the snoek disappeared earlier than usual and the large summer fish have not made an appearance yet. I understand their dilemma as they have

families to feed, but the problem is whether the resource can take the hammering that it receives from them. Most days there are four or more boats each with 8 to 10 crew, catching stumpnose. A good day could mean as many as a thousand fish per boat. Boat angling is probably the greatest holiday activity and if the stumpnose become over fished and numbers decrease to a level where they are no longer an easy target, it could have a huge effect on our town’s economy. November is the month when all your local anglers try to go to sea as often as possible before the mad season arrives. The main target will be kob and stumpnose. As in previous years yellowtail have been spotted in the lagoon, but none have been hooked. Huge shoals of these great fish have been around Dassen Island for the past couple of months so we can all hold thumbs that some of them will enter our waters. Tight lines and may the

Vispotjie beïndruk beoordelaars Die Langebaan-seiljagklub se jaarlikse potjiekoskompetisie is voorverlede naweek gehou.

bossie vars gekapte pietersielie by. Laat stadig vir 20 minute prut in 250 ml visaftreksel.
