Fun in the holiday sun The Kind Games is a holiday programme held during the school holidays. Langebaan Country Estate, together with various other roleplayers, decided to do this again during the September holidays. Children tend to lose focus during the holidays, so they frequently end up exposed to peer pressure and poor decision making. Keep them busy with educational and physical activities and they will stay out of trouble while having fun. On 25 September 365 children from Langebaan participated in the Kind Games. The weather was lovely and the children had a great time in the sun and also enjoyed a sponsored lunch. Anyone who would like to sponsor the

Tiener kry stamselle by broer TRISH GOOSEN ’n Pragtige jong meisie kuier heerlik saam met haar maats by Curro se matriekafskeid in Langebaan.

Volgens Minhet is daar net ’n 20%-kans dat ’n broer of suster ’n geskikte skenker sal wees.

New boat for rangers SANParks rangers will in future have a much easier job moving around the lagoon waters at Kraalbaai, thanks to the donation of a specifically built aluminium boat by the West Coast Honorary Rangers. The Ally-Gator 350, built at a factory in Port Elizabeth at a cost of about R27 700, will be used primarily for ferrying guests to and from the house boats and to a lesser extent for law enforcement. “We once again thank the Honorary Rangers for this much-needed donation that will be put to good use in the carrying out of our duties,” said Pat Bopape, Manager: West Coast National Park (WCNP) at a small ceremony last week. This year the Honorary Rangers also committed

R74 100 to the restoration of the main house on Jutten Island, to be used by volunteers taking part in the annual Pelican Watch. Another big cultural heritage project, in cooperation with the Park, is the renovation of the shepherd’s hut at the Seeberg lookout point. This task includes a paint job, roof, window frames, a new door and the erection of information boards on the cultural history of the area. “The park’s approximately 350 000 annual visitors will in future be able to get answers to their questions about the history of the Khoi, Eve’s Footprints, the whaling station and other interesting topics,” says Elbeth le Roux, the facilitator of the project and an Honorary Ranger with a keen interest in cultural heritage issues.

In front of the new AllyGator 350 are (back row from left) Honorary Rangers Edelbert le Roux, Tony Templer, Heilie Tem pler, Heidi Duncan and Hein Kotzee; (front) Huzalle Blake (Marine Sergeant: WCNP), Pierre Nel (Senior Section Ranger), Nozuko Mafanga (Environmental Monitor) and (back, on the far right) Dr Dave Longland (Honorary Ranger). Since its inception in 2001 the West Coast Honorary Rangers Corps has donated goods and other assets like 15 grey rhebuck, a small bus, rubber ducks, a quad bike, fridges, binoculars, ovens, books and many other items

to the value of about R1,2 million. For membership and other enquiries, contact Janet Celliers on 022 772 0955 or e-mail janet.celliers@webafrica.org.za. – Liana van Aswegen

OudLangebaner nou professor TRISH GOOSEN Jeanine Marnewick (46), voorheen van Langebaan, is besig om groot naam in internasionale wetenskaplike kringe te maak. Marnewick is Vrydagaand 27 September as vol professor by die Kaapse Skiereiland Universiteit van Tegnologie ingehuldig. Marnewick werk sedert 2006 as ’n senior wetenskaplike by die universiteit.

Appeal Board will sit in November The Langebaan Ratepayers’ and Residents’ Association (LRRA) is pleased to report on the following: Property Rates Process: The LRRA again had to point out to the Saldanha Bay Municipality that it was in contravention of the law on procedures prescribed by the Local Government Municipal Property Rate Act. The LRRA recently inquired when the long-awaited notice would appear on the Property Rates Appeal Board and was told it would sit from 25 to 28 September. At that time, no notice had been given to the appellants. The LRRA approached the Provincial Department dealing with the matter and was referred back to the municipality. The Rate’s Act states that the municipal manager must submit all appeals to the Appeal

Board within 14 days of their receipt and the board must then hear the appeals within 60 days of receiving the appeals. The appeals were delivered to the municipal manager on 28 April, meaning they had to be heard before 12 July. We were notified that the board sittings will be from 18 to 21 November, which is four months late. The financial implications can be severe as the Act clearly states that the inflated taxes must be paid unless and until the Appeal Board rules in the applicants’ favour. I am aware of various ratepayers who struggle to cope with this extra burden. The LRRA also had to intervene in 2008 when the municipality failed to stick to the letter of the Property Rates Act.They acquired a condonation from the MEC in 2008 and recently had to do the same. We have reason to believe the

21 day notices to appear at the appeals board were recently distributed. Uitsig Street steps: There seem to be movement in the right direction to fix the stairs on the beach between Melck and Uitsig Streets. Public comment on the environmental process closed on 29 August. The LRRA has continuously brought this matter to the attention of the municipal engineers since 2008 with no response. We also had the odd public representative on site with even less response. The structural integrity of the steps is now so eroded that they pose a serious safety risk and the main sewer line is behind and underneath the stairs. The LRRA were told last Monday that engineers were appoint-

ed to fix a small portion of the problem at a cost of R1,95 million. On the question of which construction design alternative was decided on, it became clear the municipality has embarked on a process that will require an assessment by appointing engineers without taking into consideration the results of the processes already conducted by environmental specialists. The LRRA feels strongly that the structural design must be user friendly to pedestrians and beachgoers. Till next time, Jaco Kotze Chairperson LRRA (Shortened. More on www.langebaanratepayers.co.za. Proud to be a Langebaner Langebaan Main Beach was a hive of activity on Heritage Day, Tuesday 23 September. I was walking along the beach in beautiful sunshine and a slight breeze, drinking in the holiday atmosphere. People of all ages, cultures and walks of life were in harmony with each other and enjoying the beauty of our lagoon. Later in the day I observed many braais, where families and friends were having fun. It is truly wonderful to be South African. I am sure that Langebaners can create this atmosphere 365 days a year by approaching all we do with a

positive attitude and in cooperation with each other. On Monday 22 September the West Coast National Park (WCNP) was in the process of orientating the newly appointed Extended Public Workers Program (EPWP) workers for the “Working for the Coast” programme. This programme intends keeping all the West Coast beaches clean whilst providing work and training to the disadvantaged. The minimal salary they receive at least puts a meal on the table. Please support these people, and if you have any complaints, please inform the WCNP Offices so that they can take corrective action. Earlier in September the Saldanha Bay Municipality (SBM) facilitated the Integrated Development Plan Review in the Town Hall. The session was well attended by

about 60 Langebaners who gave their input in a positive manner. I would like to thank all those who attended for their input. Many of the inputs dealt with problems regarding basic service delivery, maintenance and supervision. The SBM is in the process of implementing a new decentralised organisational structure to address these shortcomings. A Town Engineer for Langebaan and Hopefield has been appointed and will be in Langebaan shortly. The budgetary process now lies ahead. SBM will keep you informed of the public participation process in this regard. The 2014 national and provincial elections are around the corner. To vote you must be registered. I would like to thank the 139 newcomers to Langebaan who registered on

16 to 18 September. The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) will be making further provision for registration at the Langebaan Town Hall on the weekend of 9 and 10 November. Feel free to contact me in this regard. My “Champion” for the month is the Community Policing Forum (CPF) for the highly successful “Blow the Whistle” programme presented on 6 September attended by about 500 children. The children of Langebaan are our future and the CPF excels in looking after their interests. Thumbs up for Langebaan! Be positive, take responsibility and make a difference where you are. Op ’n ander ka’i (see) Aloha uit Hawai’i!

aspirant boogieboard-ryer. Totdat die seuntjie in Amerikaans skree: “Dad it is okay, I can do it.” Hierdie gesig is vanmôre glashelder in my geestesoog en laat my na Langebaan verlang.

lemoenplaas werk.

Neem meer vitamiene K. Present and past commodores of Langebaan Yacht Club at the annual Opening Cruise. From left are Paul Stuyck, Errol Strick land, Jannie Uys, John du Plessis, Admiral Koos Louw (president of LYC), Jaco Smith, Alfie Smit, André Kruger, Johann Rüster and Nico Jacobs (present commodore).

Successful Opening Cruise The Langebaan Yacht Club had their Opening Cruise on Saturday 28 September. A larger than expected crowd arrived for this annual event. This may have had something to do with the aroma coming from the lamb on the spit that was being prepared for lunch. The only disappointment was that many of the yachts that were to take part were trapped inside Mykonos as there were 6-metre swells running into the lagoon. This was very well compensated for by the junior kayak-

ers who took part in large numbers. As the wind was in the south, the sail past took place from the south to the north. Commodore Nico Jacobs received the salute at just after 12:30 from Vice Commodore Gavin Goldschmidt who was cruising on the lead yacht. The occasion was attended by many dignitaries including Mayor Francois Schippers and Admiral Koos Louw. The Club can be proud of a very successful Opening Cruise enjoyed by more than 200 members and friends.
