They will examine how Steinbeck uses characterisation, dialogue, and symbolism to present themes such as loneliness, friendship, the American Dream, and social inequality. In this unit pupils will investigate the challenge of a changing climate, it’s causes (both human and physical), the consequences of changing temperatures and what, if anything, we can do to prevent it. Pupils will study climate change through a range of geographical locations and understand the importance of international co-operation in achieving a positive outcome for the planet.

Pupils will also consider their individual role and contribution to climate change and how they can reduce their impact on global warming. Pupils will explore the slogan to ‘act local, think global’, and consider approaches to sustainable development.

Pupils will extend their locational knowledge and deepen their spatial awareness of the world’s countries using atlas maps to focus on the location of the countries classified as emerging. One of the key outcomes should be that pupils understand the characteristics and features of emerging countries.

Pupils will investigate, using a range of geographical data, the reasons why rural to urban migration is a key feature within these countries. This will lead pupils to consider the opportunities and challenges faced due to rapid urbanisation. The unit also provides an opportunity for pupils to evaluate the impacts ofTNCs on the quality of life and economic development of a host country.

Dance Music

Work Covered

Students will explore how Dance Music spans cultures, centuries, and technologies, evolving with social trends and innovations. They will study the traditional Latin styles such as Salsa, with its Afro-Cuban rhythms and Tango, with its dramatic phrasing and minor tonality. In the 20th century, jazz, swing, and disco paved the way for global popular dance music. The digital age revolutionized the scene with Electronic Dance Music (EDM), using synthesizers, sampling, and powerful beats to create immersive soundscapes for clubs, festivals, and global audiences. Students will use sequencing programs to create their own stylistic works.

Key Skills

Understand how instruments, structures and textures are used in Salsa

Perform as part of a larger ensemble understanding key roles of performers and different instruments and the relationship between these and the effect this has on the music

Use rhythmic features such as ostinato, cyclic rhythms, polyrhythms, call and response and syncopation when performing and improvising

Learn sequencing skills when composing EDM pieces.

Continuous assessment of instrumental skills- one solo performance of own choice.

Song Writing

Work Covered

Students begin by exploring ‘What Makes a Good Song?’ through practical musical investigation of two ‘good’ songs as case studies. Students explore Hooks/Riffs, Structure, Melody and Lyrics through listening and analysis and performing parts of each song as short musical arrangements. Pupils learn about the importance of Hooks and Riffs, Popular Song Structure and the various difference components/sections within, Melodic Motion (Conjunct and Disjunct Motion) and Lyrics within both these case studies and a range of other popular songs.

Students are encouraged to confidently navigate around lead sheets evaluating what musical information is, and is not, included in this form of notation.

Students will create their own musical arrangement of a popular song from a Lead Sheet in their chosen style/genre. This concept of “cover version” is explored by listening and examining a range of different musical arrangements of the same song for stylistic and elemental changes.

Students are encouraged to explore the resources available to them, the musical information included (and not included) on their lead sheet and to manipulate, refine and adapt existing (and include new) musical material to create their final arrangement.

Continuous assessment of instrumental skills- one solo performance of own choice in a recital afternoon.
