The stories they read will be used as inspiration for their own writing, where they will create their own Gothic settings and characters. They will learn about foreshadowing, motifs, tension, suspense and pathetic fallacy and will use these in their own writing.

Students will learn about the conventions of the dystopian genre and will examine the elements of dystopian prose, such as plot, character, setting, foreshadowing, juxtaposition. Students will examine the concept of literary adaptation and will compare the novel to the play script. They will learn about the key conventions of drama scripts and learn how to analyse dialogue and stage directions to explore the impact the playwright intended to have on different audiences. They will also practice genre-transformation tasks, where they will write from the perspectives of the characters. Students will build upon their essay writing skills and begin to solidify their understanding of the components of analytical writing.

Travel writing

Students will learn about the genre of travel writing and its conventions. They will learn the conventions of recount texts, reviews and complaints, travel advertisements and speeches, and will create their own imaginary travel destinations which they will learn how to promote. Using their knowledge of rhetoric from last year, students will build on their knowledge of how to use language to persuade, as well as examining the way different writers persuadereaders to visit a country.

2.Slavery and the British Empire

This is ourY8 global history topic. It is primarily focused on political and military history. Pupils will learn about France under the absolute rule of Louis XVI, the events of the revolution, the reign of terror, the Directory then the rise and rule of Napoleon.

This is ourY8 British history topic. It is primarily a social history unit. Pupils will first learn about West Africa before slavery and then move on to study the rise of the British empire before focusing in on the experience of enslaved people in British colonies in the Caribbean. The unit will end by looking at the abolition of slavery and its legacy.

Key Skills

Pupils will develop their ability to interpret and analyse a variety of historical sources and in this unit there will be a particular focus on analysing works of art. They will develop their ability to write extended written and oral responses, creating arguments supported by evidence. They will also develop their ability to make judgements weighing the importance of different factors.

In unit two pupils will develop a range of skills including: (I) research skills in the production of an oral presentation on the British Empire (ii) source analysis skills when learning about the experiences of enslaved people from extracts of their autobiographies (iii) extended writing skills using source evidence to support arguments.

In this unit pupils’ study different aspects of population growth, structure, density and distribution – in different contexts. Pupils will investigate where people of the world are currently living and understand the difference between density and distribution, as well as the factors that contribute to the distribution. Pupils will draw population pyramids for countries at different stages of development and consider the various issues of ageing and youthful populations. The last section of this unit explores migration. The lessons build on the key aspects of migration, before moving on to look at an example of migration within the wider context of a place.
