WINTER TEXAN

A Jail, a Hanging Tower, and a Cat Spirit?

Welcome Home!

I don’t know about you, but I am so ready to get this party started! It feels like we blinked and the off-season flew right by — but what a fun stretch it’s been. Between the laughter, the little adventures, and a few harmless shenanigans, we’ve kept the good times rolling while counting down the days until you were back in town. Now, if you know us, you know we don’t sit still for long. Our Summer Supper Club kept us busy (and well-fed!), and our travel department decided to shake things up with a few “firsts” of their own. We didn’t want to wait for the Winter Texan season to explore, so we packed our bags and headed north — first for an Alaskan cruise with a few extra days in Seattle, then east for a stunning Fall Foliage cruise paired with a land tour through historic Boston. But that wasn’t the end of it — not by a long shot! The travel team just rolled back in from a Haunted Halloween bus tour to Galveston. Three nights of ghost stories, laughter, and a whole lot of fun. Who says the off-season has to be quiet?

Now that the season is officially here, we’re just getting warmed up. We’ve got a full calendar of local tours and excursions lined up — from Brownsville to Roma and all the charming towns in between. Whether you’re chasing adventure, culture, or just a good excuse to get out and explore, we’ve got a trip with your name on it.

So, grab your hat, pack your sense of humor, and buckle up — because this season, we’re going places. From the Rio Grande Valley to beyond, the journey starts right here with Welcome Home RGV.

One hundred twelve years ago, Hidalgo County conducted its one and only hanging of a convicted criminal. His name was Abram Ortiz. His crimes: kidnapping and murder. Ortiz was hung from the second story of the Hidalgo County Jail, a building that--quite remarkably-still stands today.

Historic County Jail

The Old Hidalgo County Jail was hastily built in 1909-1910 after the county seat was moved to Chapin, Texas, and the county seat was required to have a jail.

“I’m really proud we made it last over 100 years,” says Museum of South Texas History senior archivist, Melissa Pena. “It wasn’t meant to. Not a lot of effort was put into it.”

The jail was one of the first buildings in Edinburg, previously named Chapin. It sits downtown, due north of the Hidalgo County Courthouse. It’s most significant feature: a towered cupola, notoriously home to a hanging trap.

Despite the ominous feature, the old jail served the local community in a variety of ways before becoming the cornerstone of the Museum of South Texas History. After a new jail was built in 1922, the building was repurposed and expanded for City offices, the fire and police departments, and a community center for club gatherings.

Edinburg’s oldest building was almost turned into an H.E.B. parking lot, according to Pena, but was saved by Hurricane Beulah in 1963. Flooding in downtown Edinburg caused the grocery store chain to rethink its location.

Five years later. the jail received historic Texas landmark status.

By the late 1960s. the jail had been through numerous remodels and renovations--including

encasing the hanging trap in concrete--according to a 1967 article in The Monitor. The Hidalgo County Historical Society spearheaded acquiring and converting the old jail into a museum.

The Hanging Trap

In February 1912, husband and wife Martin and Florencia Martinez were violently attacked by two men. Martin was beaten to death, and Florencia was kidnapped, assaulted, and held captive for days.

Pena reports that Florencia was able to escape--but only with the help of a cleaning woman, because of the terrain. “The other woman showed her how to get out and where to go.”

One of the men, Abram Ortiz, was arrested, tried, and sentenced to death.

Hundreds gathered around the jail on the day of his execution. “Everyone came out that day,” says Pena. “They picnicked and watched the hanging. It was a big day.”

indicates that Ortiz was led from his cell to the hanging room in iron shackles; the noose was placed around his neck, and at 11 a.m., the trap was sprung.

Reportedly, his final words were, “There is no heaven and there is no hell.”

Ortiz was the only convicted man to be hanged by Hidalgo County.

Spirits at the Museum

In the 1967 newspaper article announcing the Historical Committee’s plans to turn the old jail into a museum, committee chairman Laurie A. McDonald is quoted, “The jail will be just as it was on that day in [May] 1913.”

Subsequently, the concrete was removed. and the hanging trap was restored.

Deterioration caught up with the old building, and it was closed to visitors about 10 years ago. The Museum undertook a capital campaign to refurbish the historic building, and in 2020, it was reopened to the public.

The general public isn’t the only group welcome.

It has long been rumored that spirits roam the old building. “I work in the jail side,” shares Pena. “You think there’s someone in the office next to you or feel like someone is looking over your shoulder.”

It’s a feeling shared by other Museum staff, Pena says, but not an ominous one. She’s grown accustomed to it but will announce herself on occasion--“Good morning. I’m here. Let’s have a good day.”--or even explain out loud what she is working on…to whomever may be listening and interested.

Lately, a potentially furry presence has reportedly been felt, similar to a cat rubbing against your leg. “We’ve even heard it meow,” says Pena, who also confirms it’s not Stevie, the Museum grounds’ resident cat. Stevie is known to be very territorial and wouldn’t welcome another cat. At least not a living one.

Upper Valley Art League Celebrates 90 Years of Enriching the Community Through Art

Special to Welcome Home Winter Texan

The Upper Valley Art League proudly announces its 90th anniversary, marking nine decades of fostering artistic excellence and community engagement in the Rio Grande Valley. Established in 1935, the group has been a cornerstone of the regional arts scene, celebrating the creative achievements of its members and inspiring generations of artists.

To commemorate this significant milestone, the Upper Valley Art League will host a special exhibition showcasing the members’ premier works of art, rich in imagery, composition, color, and style. The exhibition will feature works in photography, watercolor, ceramics, acrylic, mixed media, oil, mosaics, and fiber arts.

“Celebrating 90 years is a testament to the passion and dedication of our members, supporters, and the community,” said Robert Codina, UVAL director. “We are honored to have played a part in the lives of so many artists and art lovers over the decades. We look forward to celebrating our history while also looking toward a vibrant future for the arts.”

The 90th Anniversary Exhibition, Magnum Opus, will run from November 1 to November 29 at the Kika de la Garza Gallery, 921 E. 12th Street in Mission. The art exhibition’s opening reception will be held Saturday, November 1, from 7 to 9 p.m. The public is invited to attend this free celebration of the group’s legacy. Key highlights for the 90th anniversary celebration will include a formal ribbon cutting ceremony by the Mission Chamber of Commerce and a message to attendees by city officials Wednesday, November 19, from 2 to 4 p.m.

Founded in 1935, the Upper Valley Art League was originally affiliated with the RGV Federation of Women’s Clubs in McAllen. In 1972, UVAL was charted as a nonprofit organization. In 2006, UVAL was relocated to its current location provided by the City of Mission. Upper Valley Art League is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization run solely by volunteers. Cruise South Texas back roads, and you will come across two Texas legends. The Texas lantana is often found growing along fence lines where birds have dropped seeds. This native plant blooms in the spring, summer, and fall. Blooms start out yellow and typically turn orange. The Texas prickly pear cactus blooms in the spring and serves as a food source for native wildlife.

Isla Blanca Project Closes Park for 2025-2026 Season

The residential community of the Isla Blanca Park, with its 600 RV spaces, will undergo an extensive infrastructure upgrade and will be closed for the 2025-26 winter tourist season.

The 100-plus acre park at South Padre Island is a preferred RV site for many wintering tourists who enjoy the coastal getaway in the first few months of every year. The summer months at the park are filled with Rio Grande Valley families and visitors from Mexico who have enjoyed Isla Blanca for decades.

The busiest months of the year at Isla Blanca are January and February and the subsequent summer months of June and July. In those busy winter and summer months, the RV portion of the park is at or near 100 percent capacity, its streets lined with blocks of recreational vehicles. Some of the RVs are so modernistic and high tech that Cameron County Parks and Recreation Director Joe Vega refers to them as “condos on wheels.”

It is the power and electrical demands of these newer RV vehicles that are the primary reasons for the upcoming infrastructure upgrades at Isla Blanca. Many new RVs, Vega said, “require more amperage.” With that in mind, the upgrades will focus on increasing electrical capacity, along with water and sewer improvements at Isla Blanca. “We need to get the right infrastructure in place so we can service these RVs today and over the next 50 years,” Vega said. “It’s important to extend the life of the RV park for many more generations.”

Addressing Ongoing Issues

Another point Vega emphasizes is that the other parts of Isla Blanca will remain open while the RV portion is upgraded. This includes the pavilions, boardwalk jetties, and what Vega calls “the one mile of pristine beach” at Isla Blanca. He proudly notes that USA Today recently described the Isla Blanca beachfront as the “the number one beach on the Texas Gulf Coast.”

The upcoming RV upgrades are the latest improvements Vega and the County have made at Isla Blanca. Since 2018, the County has built new pavilions and a boardwalk and has also undergone a sand dunes nourishment project to extend the beachfront at Isla Blanca. There have been improvements in recent years to RV infrastructure, such as the repaving of streets and the addition of new security lights. While noteworthy, Vega said those improvements are not sufficient for what Isla Blanca needs to meet the needs of its residents and visitors.

“We need to get those water, sewer, and electrical upgrades done to properly serve our visitors in the years to come,” he said. “If we don’t, those issues will only get worse and harder to improve and more expensive to fix in the future.”

First-Come, First-Served System

Vega knows there is not universal agreement about the County moving from a Isla Blanca reservation system based on renewals to a first-come, firstserved concept.

It was the former for years, and it led to long-term rental stays of decades as summer and winter residents simply renewed their spaces for the next tourist season. The loyalty of visitors was appreciated, he said, but there was also pushback from those shut out of the park because of the lack of available spaces. Vega recalled stories of Valley residents telling him they had to drive up to Rockport to get RV space access to State beaches on the Gulf Coast.

“I would get asked, ‘When am I going to get an opportunity to stay at Isla Blanca?’ We (County government) decided to give everyone an opportunity to enjoy the park,” he said.

All reservations are handled online at cameroncountytx.gov/parks-coastalparks/parks-rv-reservations. For winter months, reservations open anew at 8 a.m. April 15 and are open to everyone at that time. Vega says the

two-month reservation slots, (for January and February), are usually fully booked within an hour of becoming available. For the summer months, the reservation date is January 15, covering June and July, and those spots go fast, too, Vega said.

Any gaps in winter or summer reservations allow for some daily or weekly reservations at Isla Blanca, he said. There are 43 additional spaces provided by the County outside of the gates of Isla Blanca. These are located behind the Dirty Al’s restaurant. Those spaces will be available during the months the park’s RV facilities are being upgraded. The bottom-line goal is to have Isla Blanca fully open by October 1, 2026 ,with all of its infrastructure improvements in place.

“We know how important this park is to the Rio Grande Valley and to our winter visitors,” Vega said. “We consider Isla Blanca to be the crown jewel of the Texas Gulf Coast.” •

Happy Fall, Y’all, From Texas’ Best Beach

On South Padre Island, summer isn’t your only vacation opportunity. When the crowds fade and the heat eases, South Padre comes alive in a new way, with cooler temperatures, vibrant autumn events, more space, less traffic, and an unforgettable blend of culture, adventure, and nature.

‘Tis the season for local coffee shops going all-in on their seasonal fall specials. Check out Cafe Karma, Josephine’s Kitchen, Milo’s Coffee House, and Grapevine Cafe for autumn in a cup. Choose from options like pumpkin spice coffee, lattes, chai, or Cafe Karma’s fall specialty, Fall Fusion. Still craving pumpkin season must-haves? Try Grapevine Cafe’s pumpkin pancakes, Yummies Bistro’s pumpkin pie cheesecake, or Sunrise Bakery’s made-from-scratch pumpkin cream pastries. Outdoor activities take on even greater appeal in the fall. When autumn hits, the Island becomes a front row seat to one of America’s most epic migrations. South Padre sits along one of the four major North American flyways that turn into a pit stop every fall and winter for thousands of birds chasing warmer skies. Want the best seats in the house? Stop by and visit the South Padre Island Birding, Nature Center & Alligator Sanctuary, where educated and friendly staff will help you witness this once-a-year, unforgettable experience. When this season rolls in, the Island turns into a horseback rider’s dream. Cool winds and wide-open beaches make fall the best time to saddle up. Feel the crisp fall air and take in the beauty of the blue ocean water while you ride down the shoreline on horseback--no experience necessary!

The seasonal hues and fresh fall weather make for refreshing hiking opportunities at the Island’s popular trails, like the Laguna Madre Nature Trail or the South Padre Island Birding, Nature Center & Alligator Sanctuary Boardwalks.

Set sail with a dreamy, autumn sunset dolphin watch or dinner cruise. With the Island’s slower pace and milder temps this time of year, you

Introducing Starbase, Texas

can enjoy the open waters without the summer crowds or the summer heat--just you, the dolphins, a delicious dinner, and a sky painted in rich fall golden colors.

Don’t sweat the earlier sunsets. When the sun dips on the Island, that just means the night comes alive faster. Restaurants with open-air venues like Clayton’s Beach Bar & Grill, Louie’s Backyard, Longboard Bar & Grill, Tequila Sunset, or Laguna Bob have everything, from acoustic sets to DJ nights to live bands.

Fall is one of South Padre Island’s best-kept secrets. It’s when the Island slows down enough for you to slow down and savor all its true colors. To plan your fall getaway at the Island, check out our website at visitsouthpadreisland.com •

Perspectives Let the Fun Begin

Welcome back, Winter Texans! It’s so exciting for us “year-rounders” to begin to see familiar faces show up again for the start of another winter season. Let the fun begin!

This summer, I had several opportunities to dog sit for a friend. I absolutely adore this little dog. One of the very best things about it was whenever I came back home or even just came back into the room after being gone, he got so excited to see me. He would run around and jump into my arms to give kisses and be held and petted. If you’re a dog lover, too, I’m sure you know what I mean. The overwhelming joy and elation he showed just to be in my presence is such a great example of adoration. The joy we feel when we get around someone we love and care about is one of the best things in life.

As a worship leader this gets me thinking about how we ought to feel about being in the presence of God. See, when you enter into God’s presence in worship, like

the Bible describes in Psalms, you ought to get excited! “You will show me the path that leads to life; your presence fills me with joy and brings me pleasure forever.” Psalm 16:11 (GNT) There’s joy and pleasure in the presence of God.

When I was young, I learned a song I remember to this day. It’s taken from Psalms, as well. Some of the words are, “…I will enter His gates with thanksgiving in my heart. I will enter His courts with praise. I will rejoice for He has made me glad.” Even as a little child, I learned to be excited about worshiping God. Spending time singing songs to Him and enjoying the peace and joy that comes from time spent with my focus on Him is rewarding. I adore my Lord Jesus!

I encourage you to give it a try. Sing a song to God. Spend some time adoring Him. Go to church and experience the joy of worshipping Him along with other believers. There’s pleasure in God’s presence, and it can be fun and bring you joy! •

Things I Have Learned

TWe were recently spending time in Florida with our daughter. We took a road trip to check out a street fair and enjoyed walking among all the booths. My wife and I were chatting, and as we passed one booth, we noticed a woman emerge to catch up with us.

Minnesota?” Thinking perhaps she recognized me from somewhere, I asked how she knew. It turns out she had recognized our Minnesota accent as we passed her booth. I think all the nice lady really wanted was to speak her native tongue to someone because she, too, was from Minnesota.

impossible because Minnesotans don’t have accents. We speak normal American English, the language of all good television network newscasters. Accents come from the south, from Boston or New York--or maybe Texas. When I do think of a Minnesota accent, it is the stereotypical Fargo movie/Scandinavian drawl.

Hello Travel Friends From the Diary of a BBQ Snob

Welcome back to the Valley Y’all! Dear Travel Frineds I can’t tell you how glad I am to get this season kicked off and have some fun together. For those of you who don’t know me, I grew up in Kansas City. When I tell people that, it creates a whole confusing conversation explaining that KC is, in fact, in two different states and I’m from the Kansas side. It also means I love the Chiefs, know how to tailgate like a pro, am not afraid of tornados, and--most of all--I’m a BBQ snob! How can you not be when you’re used to the best?

In KC we’re known for sweet BBQ sauce, slow smoked meat, like ribs and burnt ends, and incredible sides like cheesy corn. I grew up with my dad smoking meat on the back deck while I ran through the grass smelling that sweetness all day. Can I go back to when life was that easy? Sometimes I get homesick down here in the Valley, and BBQ is always the comfort food that reminds

me of Kansas City.

If you’re like me and love some finger-lickin’good BBQ, I have a few spots for you to try here in the RGV. Don’t just take my word for it, either. Texas Monthly listed two spots here in the RGV in their top 50 best Texas BBQ joints. Coming in at number 5 on their list is GW’s BBQ in San Juan. (107 Nebraska Ave). You’ll find it over by the Basilica--with a parking lot full of cars. This place is known for their brisket, spareribs, and a sweet glaze, along with their rotating menu of unique creations like lasagna sausage and Chinese orange pork belly. There’s always something new to try. I’m burying the lead here because my personal star of approval goes to Teddy’s BBQ in Weslaco. (2807 N. Texas Blvd.). Just thinking about their melt-in-your-mouth, slow-smoked brisket is making my mouth water. They also have a special to die for with their pork belly burnt ends. You have to get there early to snag some of those, but

let me tell you, they’re worth their weight in gold! If breakfast is your thing, you can swing by in the morning for a BBQ taco with a fresh tortilla made from beef tallow. Yes, it’s worth the drive, and yes, you’ll leave already planning your next trip back. Take it from a true BBQ snob. This place is, as the kids say these days, chef’s kiss!

I know you all just got here from the Midwest and up north, but if you find yourself needing a delicious BBQ fix, give one of these spots a try and let me know what you think. If you find another great spot for BBQ, let me know so I can try it out, too. Go Chiefs! •

Mamma Mia: A Musical Celebration of Love and Laughter

Special to Welcome Home Winter Texan

Few musicals capture the joy of live theatre like Mamma Mia!. Set on a sun-soaked Greek island, the story follows Sophie as she seeks to discover her father’s identity, bringing her mother’s past lovers back into the mix.

What could be a chaotic premise turns into a heartwarming tale of love, friendship, and family.

The ABBA soundtrack, featuring hits like “Dancing Queen” and “Take a Chance on Me,” propels the story forward, turning every scene into a celebration. The characters are vibrant and relatable, and the music invites audiences to sing, dance, and laugh along.

Mamma Mia! reminds us that life is messy and love is complicated, but joy and connection make it all worthwhile. It’s a musical that entertains, uplifts, and leaves every audience member smiling--a true testament to the magic of theatre.

Join us November 5-9 and 19-21 at the Sharyland High School Auditorium, 1216 N. Shary Rd. in Mission, at 7 p.m. and November 22 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Tickets are $10.00 for adults, $8.00 for those 65 years of age and up, and $5.00 for students and children. •

UTRGV Theatre Announces Electrifying 2025–2026 Performance Season

Special to Welcome Home Winter Texan

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Theatre is thrilled to announce its 2025–2026 season, showcasing an exciting mix of cult classics, sharp contemporary comedies, historical dramas, and community-focused productions.

The season opened with the iconic musical The Rocky Horror Show by Richard O’Brien, running October 23–26, and a special Halloween night performance, October 31. Get ready to do the Time Warp again! Join us for this cult-classic rock musical that invites audience participation, outrageous costumes, and a night of sci-fi glam and horror satire like no other.

In November, audiences will enjoy Eric Coble’s comedy Bright Ideas from November 20–23, exploring the hilarious--and unsettling--extremes of modern parenting. A comedy about ambition, parenting, and pesto, Bright Ideas follows a couple willing to do anything (literally anything) to get their toddler into the best preschool. It’s hilariously twisted and frighteningly relatable.

The spring semester begins with Lauren Gunderson’s The Book of Will March 5–8, 2026, a heartfelt tribute to Shakespeare and the friends who preserved his legacy. A love letter to theatre and friendship, this historical drama tells the untold story of how Shakespeare’s friends saved his work for future generations. A stirring and witty celebration of legacy, literature, and loyalty. The spring mainstage productions will wrap up with Karen Zacarías’ evocative family drama, Mariela in the Desert, April 16–19, 2026, examining isolation, identity, and artistic ambition in a Mexican desert setting. This haunting and poetic family drama set in Northern Mexico explores love, sacrifice, and artistic ambition in the face of isolation. It is a moving portrayal of a woman’s search for identity and connection.

The season also features two special events designed to engage younger audiences and celebrate Latinx voices. On April 24 and 25, 2026, the Theatre for Young Audiences Children’s Workshop presents The Wizard of Oz, adapted by Dr. Brian Warren, a playful and accessible version of the beloved

tale designed to spark the imaginations of children and families. Rounding out the season, the Latino Theatre Initiatives Annual Theater Festival takes place May 1 and 2, 2026, highlighting original student work and performances that reflect the vibrant culture and stories of the Latinx community.

All performances will be held at the Albert L Jeffers Theatre and the Dr. Marian Monta Studio Theatre located in the Edinburg Liberal Arts South Building (ELABS). Tickets go on sale in early September at utrgv.edu/theatre. For more information, media inquiries, or group sales, please contact the UTRGV Theatre Department at 956-665-3581 or email theatreboxoffice@utrgv.edu. •
