e Sevilla deslumbra, a primera vista, su especialísima luz. La Virgen de los Reyes. Cuenta la leyenda que el rey San Fernando tuvo una visión de la Virgen, prometiéndole la conquista de Sevilla. Al cumplirse la visión, y como agradecimiento, quiso el rey que los mejores escultores produjeran la imagen exacta que se le había aparecido, sin que ninguno lo consiguiera. Unos supuestos artistas alemanes lograrían realizar el encargo real, que por las sorprendentes circunstancias que lo rodearon fue declarado “verdadero y cierto milagro” por el obispo don Remondo. La Virgen de los Reyes. Legend claims that King Fernando saw a vision of the Virgin Mary stating that he would conquer Seville. When this prophecy was fulfilled, the King had his best sculptors attempt to reproduce the exact image of what he had seen to express his gratitude to the Virgin, but no one was able to do so. A German artist managed to depict the image and completed the royal commission. Due to the surprising circumstances of the events surrounding the vision, it was declared “a true miracle” by Bishop Don Remondo.

a Catedral de Sevilla está situada en lo que fue el emplazamiento de la Gran Mezquita, construida en el siglo XII, de la que aún se conserva el alminar, denominado actualmente Giralda por la veleta que lo remata. La conversión de la Mezquita en Catedral tuvo lugar cuando el rey Fernando III de Castilla conquistó Sevilla, en el siglo XIII, sin que apenas se modificara su estructura arquitectónica. Se dice que, cuando en el siglo XV se decidió levantar un nuevo templo, uno de los canónigos sentenció: “Hagamos una iglesia tan grande que los que la vieren acabada nos tengan por locos”. Y, sin duda, no es una exageración pues la Catedral Hispalense es el mayor templo gótico del mundo y el tercero de la Cristiandad, después de San Pedro del Vaticano y San Pedro de Londres. Compuesta por cinco naves, está repleta de exquisitos tesoros artísticos. La Capilla Mayor ocupa un tramo de la nave central, destacando las rejas de hierro y los púlpitos, que datan del siglo XVI. Por su parte, el Retablo Mayor se realizó en distintas fases durante cerca de un siglo, entre los años 1482 y 1564, según las trazas de Pyeter Dancart. Si bien, también intervinieron Pedro Millán, los hermanos Jorge Fernández Alemán y Alejo Fernández, Roque Balduque, Juan Bautista Vázquez el Viejo y Pedro de Heredia. Igualmente destacable es el gran Coro, que ocupa otro tramo de la nave central y cuya sillería se realizó entre los siglos XV y XVI. Siguiendo este recorrido por el interior de la ‘Magna Hispalensis’ llegamos a la Capilla Real. Situada en el muro de la cabecera y realizada por Martín de Gaínza, en el siglo XVI, sustituyó al antiguo ábside gótico. La Virgen de los Reyes, imagen gótica de la segunda mitad del siglo XIII y que perteneció al propio rey San Fernando, es venerada en la hornacina principal del Retablo. Ante su Altar se puede contemplar una urna de plata dorada y cristal, que contiene el cuerpo incorrupto del rey de Castilla. También el arte plateresco encuentra un lugar destacado entre los muros de la Catedral de Sevilla. Buena muestra de ello es la Sacristía Mayor, que comenzó a construir Diego de Riaño y la continuó y finalizó Martín de Gaínza, a mediados del siglo XVI. La capital hispalense, a través de su Catedral, le rinde homenaje también a la figura de Cristóbal Colón. Los restos del navegante genovés descansan en su interior, traídos de la Catedral de la Habana al independizarse de Cuba, como bien puede leerse en los laterales del sepulcro. El conjunto escultórico está compuesto por cuatro heraldos que llevan el féretro a hombros y representan cada uno de los reinos de la Corona Española: Castilla, León, Aragón y Navarra. Acompañando y enriqueciendo este paseo artístico por la Catedral se alza el excepcional conjunto de vidrieras, la mayoría de las cuales se realizaron en el siglo XVI.

he Cathedral of Seville occupies the site of a great mosque built in the late 12th Century and still maintains the bell tower, known as the Giralda, which is a legacy of this Moorish structure. Work on the Christian cathedral began under the reign of King Fernando the III of Castile, conqueror of Seville in the 13th Century, who hardly modified the original architecture. In the 15th Century when the decision was made to build a new temple, the intention was “to make a church that is so huge that those who see it will think we are mad”. This was not an exaggeration as the Seville Cathedral is the largest gothic temple in the world and the third largest Christian cathedral following Saint Peter’s in the Vatican and Saint Paul’s in London. The Cathedral is made up of five naves each filled with exquisite artistic treasures. The main chapel, with its monumental 15th Century forged iron grilles designed by Brother Francisco of Salamanca, takes up the central part of the building. The Main Altarpiece is considered to be one of the greatest in the Christian world. The relief panels designed by Peter Dancart were carved by Spanish and Flemish sculptors between 1482 and 1564. The Spanish sculptors included Pedro Millán, the brothers Jorge Fernández Alemán and Alejo Fernández, Roque Balduque, Juan Bautista Vázquez el Viejo and Pedro de Heredia. The choir, with seats that were designed in the 15th and 16th Century and which is found in a nave off the Main Chapel, is also remarkable. Continuing along this impressive hall we come to the brilliant interior of the ‘Magna Hispalensis’, the Royal Chapel.

El mayor templo gótico del mundo. The largest Gothic church in the world. Inside the Royal Chapel there is a 16th Century mural by Martín de Gainza which replaced the gothic apse. There is also a gothic effigy of the Virgen de los Reyes (Virgin of the Kings) dating from the second half of the 13th Century which belonged to King Fernando himself and which is the centrepiece of the altar. The gold plated glass urn found in front of the altar contains the remains of this Castilian king. Examples of Plateresque art work can also be found within the walls of the Cathedral of Seville. One example of this style can be seen in the Main Sacristy, which was begun by Diego de Riaño and continued and completed by Martin de Gainza in the mid 16th century. Seville, through its Cathedral, also pays homage to Christopher Columbus. The remains of this

Italian navigator are kept here where they were brought from the Cathedral of Havana when Cuba became independent (as stated in the texts next to the mausoleum). The sculpture found here is made up of four heralds which represent the four Spanish kingdoms (Castilla, Leon, Aragon and Navarra) carrying the casket. Adding to the richness of this artistic visit to the Cathedral are the exceptional stained glass windows, the majority of which were made in the 16th century.

ntiguo alminar de la mezquita musulmana, la Giralda fue en su día la torre más alta del mundo. Hoy, después de las tres añadiduras realizadas tras la Reconquista, la altura total de la torre, ubicada en el ángulo nordeste del Patio de los Naranjos de la Catedral, supera los 97 metros. Varios cuerpos de diversos estilos arquitectónicos componen la estructura de la torre. El musulmán se construyó entre 1172-98 por el emir Yaqub al-Mansur, y para sus cimientos se utilizaron piedras de distintos monumentos romanos, algunas de las cuales aún pueden verse a ras del suelo, en la esquina de la calle Placentines. La ingeniería de este antiguo minarete estuvo a cargo de Gever, que en realidad ideó dos torres, una dentro de otra. El hueco que las separa está ocupado por una rampa por la que antiguamente ascendía a caballo el Sultán y que, hoy día, sirve de acceso hasta la terraza superior. Sobre el cuerpo de arquitectura musulmana se añadió, en el siglo XVI, un segundo de campanas, obra de Hernán Ruiz. Por encima de éste aún hay otro más, que tiene en sus esquinas cuatro jarras de azucenas de bronce. Un último cuerpo de arquitectura renacentista completa el conjunto. Denominado de carambolas, lo componen las estrellas, la cúpula y el cupulín, sobre el que, finalmente, se erige la gran veleta de bronce denominada Giraldillo.

uilt on the site of a Muslim mosque, the Giralda was once one of the tallest towers in the world. Today, following the three additions to the tower made after Seville was conquered, the actual height of this tower found in the north-east corner of the Courtyard of the Orange Trees is 97 metres. A variety of different architectural styles make up the structure of the bell tower. The tower itself was built in 1172-98 by the Emir Yaqub al-Mansur. The base for the tower was made using stones from various Roman monuments, some of which can still be seen on the corner of Calle Placentines.

Alminar de la antigua mezquita musulmana. Minaret of the former Muslim mosque. The engineer responsible for this ancient minaret, named Gever, effectively built two towers, one inside the other. The space that separates these two towers is a series of ramps instead of stairs which the Sultan used to go up the tower on horseback. Nowadays, these ramps are used as a means of visiting the terrace of the minaret on foot. In the 16th Century a set of bells designed by Hernán Ruiz was added to this Muslim structure. On top of the tower itself there is another structure that has recently been restored, with four bronze Madonna lilies on the corners. The final part of the tower is designed in the Renaissance style. This section consists of a large and a small dome topped off with the impressive wind vane, the Giraldillo.

El Giraldillo. En lo alto de la torre se alza una gigantesca estatua de la Fe, en forma de mujer con vestidura clásica romana, que lleva en una mano un escudo y en la otra, una palma. Al ser una veleta giratoria se denominó giralda tanto a la torre como a la estatua. Actualmente se conoce como Giralda a la torre y Giraldillo a la veleta. El Giraldillo. On top of the bell tower of the Giralda there is a statue portraying Faith in the form of a woman dressed in traditional Roman clothes. She is carrying a shield in one hand and a palm leaf in the other. As this statue is a rotating weather vane both the tower and the statue were named ‘Giralda’ , derived from the Spanish word ‘girar’ meaning ‘turn’. Nowadays, the bell tower is referred to as the Giralda and the wind vane as the Giraldillo.

ntiguo Abd Al Ramán III ordenó en el 913 erigir este palacio fortaleza. El Alcázar está formado por un conjunto de palacios que constituye la muestra más importante de la arquitectura civil sevillana. En su interior destacan los sectores palaciegos, jardines y dependencias de servicio que se distribuyen en un solar amurallado en el borde meridional del Casco Antiguo de Sevilla. El Palacio no configura un conjunto unitario sino intimista, donde se entrelazan elementos artísticos musulmanes con otros góticos, renacentistas y barrocos. Destacada es la aportación de Pedro I, que reconstruyó partes del antiguo alcázar abbadí y otros palacios anteriores.

bd Al Raman ordered the construction of this fortified palace in 931 AD. The Alcazar comprises a series of palaces which are the most important example of civil architecture in Seville. In the interior, the outstanding palace grounds, gardens and servant’s quarters are spread over an area enclosed by walls on the south side of Seville’s Historic City Centre. Rather than an architectural unit, the Alcazar has an intimate atmosphere created by an intermingling of Muslim artistic elements with others from the Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque periods. The most striking contribution by Pedro I was the reconstruction of the older parts of the Abbadi Alcazar and other early palaces.

Since 1934 this family-run restaurant in the emblematic Santa Cruz quarter has stood out for its top quality acorn-fed Iberian ham. Its traditional ambience of bullﬁghting scenes and festivities offers a slice of the Seville of yesteryear through the murals of the painter Palomar. Favourite dishes include the fried eggs with chips and ham, cold meat platters, Iberian pork ﬁllet and sirloin, salads and fried cod. Only a matter of metres away is its sister establishment La Esquina, with the same tradition and charm.

na de las últimas aportaciones del arte almohade en Sevilla, la Torre del Oro, constituía el último baluarte del lienzo de muralla que arrancaba desde el Alcázar. Muchas leyendas intentan explicar el nombre de la torre, como la de los reflejos del sol en los azulejos que presuntamente la recubrían o la que alude a los cabellos de una dama que el rey don Pedro hubiera encerrado en el edificio. Sin embargo, se la llamaba del Oro por su importancia, igual que existía otra de la Plata. Construida en el primer tercio del siglo XIII, tiene una docena de lados y está rematada por un último cuerpo circular que fue añadido por Sebastián Vander Borcht en 1760. En la actualidad se encuentra en su interior un museo naval con grabados, cartas marinas, maquetas, instrumentos antiguos de marear y documentos históricos. En la torre se traza una imagen de la historia naval de Sevilla, de la importancia del río Guadalquivir y de la huella de numerosos marines ilustres.

ne of the later examples of Almohad art in Seville, the Golden Tower is the last bastion of the fortified wall which began at the Alcazar. There are many legends as to the origin of the tower’s name. Some say it refers to the reflections of the sun on the tiles which supposedly covered it, while others claim it was the golden hair of a damsel which King Pedro locked up in the building. The fact is that it was called the Golden Tower because of its importance in comparison to the nearby Silver Tower.

Built at the beginning of the 13th Century, the tower has twelve sides. The highest part of the tower was added by Sebastian Vander Borcht in 1760. Today it is a naval museum with engravings, letters, models, antique navigational instruments and historical documents. The museum also has information regarding Seville’s prestigious naval history, the importance of the Guadalquivir River and the routes of various famous navigators.

Following the death of his wife he suffered a profound moral crisis and decided to dedicate his life to the poor, building the Hospital which has carried out its functions ever since 1627 and which is currently a shelter for the elderly in need of aid.

l recorrido turístico comienza ya en

la propia fachada, de gran elegancia y belleza decorativa. En su interior la visita nos guía hacia una ruptura con el presente que comienza en el doble patio, de gran belleza y diáfana luminosidad. En él se sitúan dos fuentes en las que se disponen esculturas de la Misericordia y la Caridad, obras del siglo XVII. En los muros del patio se encuentra un conjunto de paneles de azulejos holandeses, que muestran pasajes de la Biblia. Pero el gran valor artístico se encuentra en el interior de la iglesia. Algunas de las obras de arte que destacan de su interior son las Postrimerías o Jeroglíficos de la Muerte, dramáticas y terribles representaciones de la muerte realizadas por Valdés Leal y el conjunto completo de pinturas de Murillo, representando Obras de Misericordia, seis en total. En el Presbiterio se sitúa el impresionante Retablo Mayor, de intenso barroquismo, realizado por Pedro Roldán, Bernardo Simón de Pineda y Valdés Leal, que plasma la séptima obra de Misericordia: enterrar a los muertos. La visita al monumento sigue con la Sala de Cabildos, estancia del s. XVII donde todavía hoy se reúne la Hermandad, con obras de Zurbarán, Pedro de Camprobín, Valdés Leal, y donde se unen la arquitectura gótica de las Atarazanas con el esplendor del barroco clásico sevillano. Al final, se puede descansar en el bello Patio de los Rosales, jardín enmarcado entre arcos de las Atarazanas, donde están conservadas las rosas que plantó en vida Miguel Mañara. El recorrido puede completarse con la Visita de la Galería Alta (previa cita), donde se encuentra una parte importante de la colección pictórica de la Hermandad, así como estancias privadas como la Biblioteca, Sala Alta de Cabildo o Coro, desde donde se disfruta de una visión única de la Iglesia.

he façade itself is noteworthy, with its elegant lines and outstanding decorative beauty. The interior takes us on a journey into the past, starting with the striking and luminous double courtyard. Here you will find two fountains with sculptures of Mercy and Charity which date from the 17th century. The walls of the courtyard are decorated with a series of Dutch ceramic panels depicting scenes from the Bible. However its greatest artistic wealth is to be found in the interior of the church. Art works which stand out in its interior include the Hieroglyphs of Death, dramatic and terrifying representations of Death painted by Valdés Leal, and a complete a series of six paintings by Murillo which represent the Acts of Mercy. The Presbytery houses the impressive Main Altarpiece. This intensely Baroque work by Pedro Roldán, Bernardo Simón de Pineda y Valdés Leal represents the Seventh Act of Mercy, burial of the dead. The visit continues with the Chapter Hall, which dates from the 17th century and is still used for meetings of the Brotherhood. It is decorated with works by Zurbarán, Pedro de Camprobín and Valdés Leal and combines the Gothic architecture of the Royal Shipyards with the splendour of the classic Seville Baroque style. Finally, rest a while in the beautiful Courtyard of the Rose Bushes, which is framed by the arches of the Royal Shipyards and conserves rose bushes which were planted in the time of Miguel Mañara. It is also possible to visit the Upper Gallery (by appointment), which houses much of the brotherhood’s art collection, along with private quarters such as the Library, the Upper Chapter Hall and the Choir, which offers a unique view of the church. welcome&olé!

Plaza de Toros de la Real Maestranza MAESTRANZA BULLRING El coso del Baratillo comenzó a construirse en 1761, siguiendo el proyecto de Francisco Sánchez de Aragón, y lo finalizó en 1881 el arquitecto Juan Talavera y de la Vega. Su aspecto externo es de estilo tardo-barroco apuntando ya hacia el clasicismo. En su Museo se exponen fondos relacionados con la propia historia de la Corporación nobiliaria que es propietaria de esta Plaza de Toros: la Real Maestranza de Caballería de Sevilla, así como numerosos objetos relacionados con la fiesta de los toros. La temporada taurina se inicia el Domingo de Resurrección, continúa con las corridas de la Feria de Abril y el Corpus, y concluye, tras la Feria de San Miguel, con la tradicional corrida del día 12 de octubre. Seville’s Baratillo Bullring started to be constructed in 1761 according to the project by Francisco Sánchez de Aragón and was finished in 1881 by the architect Juan Talavera y de la Vega. Its exterior shows the style of the Late Baroque and early Classicist period. Inside its Museum there are exhibits related to the history of the Noble Order which is the owner of the Bullring: ‘La Real Maestranza de Caballería de Sevilla’, as well as numerous objects associated with the art of bullfighting. The bullfighting season begins on Easter Sunday, continuing with bullfights through the April Fair and Corpus Christi, and concludes following the Fair of San Miguel with the traditional bullfight on 12 October.

Ayuntamiento Hispalense THE TOWN HALL Es considerado uno de los monumentos más extraordinarios de España en su estilo arquitectónico, el renacentista. Su fachada más rica es la que da a la Plaza de San Francisco, elaborada con numerosas puertas y ventanales acompañados de medallones de personajes mitológicos e históricos, mientras que sus pilastras están decoradas con ramos florales y grotescos. De su interior destaca, sobre todo, la Sala Capitular, con un techo formado por una bóveda casi plana compuesta por 35 casetones de piedra, que llevan los retratos de reyes de España anteriores a Felipe II, en relieve. También es notable la escalera de estilo mixto gótico y renacentista, que desde el apeadero sube a la planta alta. Considered to be one of the most extraordinary monuments in Spain in the Renaissance style. Its most striking façade looks onto Plaza San Francisco, with numerous doors and windows decorated with representations of mythological and historical figures, floral bouquets and grotesques. The interior of the building is equally impressive, above all the main hall with its vaulted ceiling made up of 35 stone sections containing portraits in relief of the different Kings of Spain prior to Felipe II. Su fisonomía actual corresponde al proyecto barroco, sustituto de la fallida Colegiata medieval, pero en realidad también es fruto de las etapas romana, visigótica y musulmana que la antecedieron. Para atestiguarlo, ahí está el acceso por la calle Córdoba, donde se conserva el cuerpo bajo de la torre de la Mezquita Mayor de Adabbás, entre otros vestigios. Sus retablos e imágenes sacras, esculturas, pinturas, platería y bordados reúnen autores tan ilustres como Juan de Oviedo, Duque Cornejo, Juan de Mesa o Martínez Montañés. A estas obras de arte y enseres hay que añadir el impresionante órgano barroco, que recuerda la intensa vida musical de la Colegiata.

AntiquariumMetropol Parasol

ituado en la planta baja del Metropol Parasol, Antiquarium es un museo con restos arqueológicos desde la Roma imperial en el siglo I d.c hasta la época almohade, en el siglo XII d.c. El visitante puede encontrar aquí antiguas casas, conducciones de agua residuales, una factoría de salazones de pescado (siglo I) o mosaicos de los siglos II, III y VI. En total, 4.500 metros cuadrados con restos de la Sevilla romana, visigoda y almohade. Y todo ello a los pies de una de las obras arquitectónicas más vanguardistas de Sevilla. Las ‘Setas’ (Espacio Metropol Parasol) son un lugar de encuentro, ocio y cultura en el centro de Sevilla, que consta de una plaza de abastos (mercado), el mencionado museo arqueológico (Antiquarium) y un paseo-mirador que ofrece unas imponentes vistas de la línea de cielo de la ciudad. ocated on the lower floor of the Metropol Parasol, Antiquarium is a museum with archaeological remains dating from the Roman Empire in 1 A.D. through to the Moors of the 12th century. It includes ancient dwellings, sewerage systems, a fish salting factory (1st Century) and mosaics from the 2nd, 3rd and 4th Century. All up, there are 4,500 square metres of remains of Roman, Visigothic and Moorish Seville, and all hidden below one of the most innovative constructions in Seville. The so-called ‘Mushrooms’ (Metropol Parasol) comprise a meeting place, leisure and culture facility in the centre of Seville which includes a market, the above-mentioned archaeological museum (Antiquarium) and a walkway/viewpoint with incredible views of the city skyline. With this new attraction, the largest historic city centre in Europe now has a natural connection between the monuments of the centre and the northern zone of the walled city in the form of cultural facilities with modern lines, linking the pedestrian zone which runs from Plaza de España to the Basilica of La Macarena and the Cingo Llagas Hospital.

Casa de Pilatos

l núcleo principal del Palacio de los Adelantados Mayores de Andalucía, situado en pleno centro de Sevilla y en la frontera de la antigua judería, hoy conocido como Casa de Pilatos, comenzó a construirse en el último cuarto del siglo XV y fue ampliándose sucesivamente a lo largo de tres generaciones, mediante la agregación y transformación de edificios preexistentes, hasta convertirse en el mayor, más rico y complejo conjunto residencial privado de la ciudad en la siguiente centuria. La coexistencia de estructuras espaciales y de motivos decorativos mudéjares heredados de la Edad Media, con novedades importadas de los palacios del Renacimiento italiano, lo convierten en el mejor ejemplo de la arquitectura civil andaluza del siglo XVI y en el modelo de palacio sevillano del Siglo de Oro. Además de por su arquitectura, este palacio destaca por la riqueza de sus colecciones, por el incalculable número de piezas de azulejos que visten sus muros, por la diversidad de dibujos y por las complejas combinaciones que presentan, la Casa de Pilatos es el más rico museo de azulejería del siglo XVI que se pueda contemplar. La colección escultórica adquirida en Italia por el I Duque de Alcalá, virrey de Nápoles a mediados del siglo XVI, e integrada en la arquitectura del palacio por un arquitecto napolitano enviado al efecto, reúne todos los géneros de la escultura antigua: relieves históricos y mitológicos, y retratos tanto reales como ideales. Además, se conserva en las mismas hornacinas y nichos para los que fue reunida, siendo el único ejemplo superviviente de la sintonía entre arquitectura y escultura característico de las colecciones de antigüedades en el Renacimiento. Todo este hermoso y rico conjunto queda realzado y ennoblecido por una espléndido repertorio de yeserías y artesonados que cubren todos los salones del palacio.

onstruction of the main nucleus of the Palace of Los Adelantados Mayores de Andalucía, located in the centre of Seville on the edge of the former Jewish Quarter and today known as Casa de Pilatos, was begun in the late 15th century. It was progressively extended over the course of three generations through additions and transformation of preexisting buildings until becoming the largest, richest and most complex private residential building in the city in the following century. The coexistence of Mudejar spatial structures and decorative motifs inherited from the Middle Ages with new developments inspired by the palaces of the Italian Renaissance makes this the best example of Andalusian civil architecture in the 16th century and the model for the Seville-style palace of the Golden Age. Apart from its architecture, the Palace stands out due to the wealth of its collections. The incalculable number of ceramic tiles which cover its walls, the diversity of the drawings and their complex combinations make Casa de Pilatos the richest Museum of 16th century ceramic tiling open to public view. The collection of sculptures acquired in Italy by the 1st Duke of Alcalá, Viceroy of Naples in the mid-16th century, and which were integrated into the architecture of the Palace by an architect specifically brought from Naples, includes all the genres of classical sculpture: historical and mythological relief sculptures and both real and idealised portraits. The Palace also conserves a number of niches and it is the only surviving example of the harmony between the architecture and sculpture characteristic of the antique collections of the Renaissance. All this beautiful and luxurious complex is further enhanced and ennobled by a splendid range of plasterwork and coffered ceilings in the halls of the Palace.

n esta tierra se ha cantado por sevillanas a la más mínima ocasión: “El vino, qué tiene el vino, que alegra las penas mías”. Se glosan las propiedades curativas para el ánimo, pero no hay que descuidar las que disfruta el organismo ni por qué desoír el placer que brinda al paladar. Detrás queda una extensa y honda tradición literaria al respecto. Por delante, un amplio horizonte de experiencias gastronómicas y turísticas en los territorios más dispares. También en la provincia de Sevilla, por supuesto. La gastronomía y los vinos son la expresión externa de cada rincón, ya que son el resultado de lo que el clima, el suelo, las variedades utilizadas y la acción del hombre han conseguido. Y Sevilla tiene una dilatada tradición de vino. Como parte de una de las provincias romanas, fue una importante zona vinícola. En sus villas y campos se extendían hermosas hileras de viñedos de los que se extraían los ricos mostos para convertirse en embriagadores vinos, tanto para el consumo local como para la exportación a otras partes del imperio romano. Hoy existen en la provincia de Sevilla tres comarcas vinícolas fundamentales: el Aljarafe, la Sierra Norte y Guadalquivir-Doñana. Cada cual con sus caldos característicos, igual que sus paisajes, monumentos y tradiciones, elementos con los que constituyen una oferta turística singular y apetecible para el viajero. El Aljarafe sevillano es una franja de tierra que se eleva circundando la parte oeste de la capital, formada por una treintena de pueblos con una extensión aproximada de 500 kilómetros cuadrados. Situada entre el río Guadiamar al norte y el Guadalquivir al sur, de clima mediterráneo con veranos calurosos e inviernos suaves, se trata de un terreno muy propicio para el cultivo de la vid. Los vinos finos y generosos, algunos blancos jóvenes y afrutados, y sobre todo el mosto (un vino blanco, turbio, de baja graduación

entre 10 y 12 grados), se integran con maestría en el conjunto de reclamos turísticos de la comarca, plagada de lugares históricos y fiestas. La Sierra Norte de Sevilla se enmarca en un parque natural con una superficie de 177.484 hectáreas donde se asientan diez municipios entre montes bajos y alomados, con altitudes comprendidas entre los 268 y 968 metros. Monumentos naturales como el Cerro del Hierro o las Cascadas del Huesna se ofrecen al viajero más inquieto. Today, the province has three main wineproducing zones: Aljarafe, Sierra Norte and Guadalquivir-Doñana. Each one has its own characteristic wines, as is the case of their landscapes, monuments and traditions, features which together comprise undoubted attractions for travellers. The Aljarafe region overlooks the capital city to the west, with around thirty towns in an area covering approximately 500 square kilometres. Wedged between the Guadiamar River to the north and the Guadalquivir to the South and with a Mediterranean climate characterised by hot summers and benign winters, this zone is ideal for grape growing. Dry sherries and ‘rich’ wines, the odd young and fruity white and above all must (a cloudy white wine with

Nature sites such as Cerro del Hierro and the Huesna Falls are further attractions for more intrepid travellers. In the Lower Guadalquivir, the main grape growing zones are located on the lowlands and the marshes near Jerez, ideal for rich wines, dry sherry and manzanilla from Jerez and Sanlúcar, along with oloroso and sweet wines. A getaway to any these fertile and welcoming territories is a perfect way to ease the spirit of visitors to our province.

En esta nueva temporada, Sevilla albergará ocho óperas, la primera de ellas Las bodas de Fígaro (hasta el 5 de octubre), con una ópera en versión concierto y otra adaptada al público infantil. La programación lírica se completa con la zarzuela Luisa Fernanda y dos recitales. Habrá danza, incluyendo la siempre sorprendente apuesta del bailaor Israel Galván o de los belgas Peeping Tom. Habrá teatro, con algunos estrenos absolutos, como La noche de Max Estrella, la producción del Centro Andaluz de Teatro que versiona Luces de Bohemia de Valle Inclán, o como El estado de sitio, de Albert Camus. El Centro Dramático Nacional, la Compañía Nacional de Teatro Clásico, Teatro de La Abadía, La Tarasca o Els Joglars acercarán sus últimos montajes. Grandes intérpretes pasarán por los escenarios sevillanos: Luz Casal, Pat Metheny, Pasión Vega, Víctor Manuel, Rodrigo Leao, Rosario o Noa. Flamenco incluido: Miguel Poveda, Estrella Morente... There will also be dance, including the ever-surprising offering by the flamenco dancer Israel Galván and the Belgians Peeping Tom. And there is theatre, with various premieres such as ‘The Night of Max Estrella’, the version by the Centro Andaluz de Teatro of the play ‘Bohemian Lights’ by Valle Inclán and ‘The State of Siege’ by Albert Camus. The National Performing Arts Centre, the National Classical Theatre Company, Teatro de La Abadía, La Tarasca and Els Joglars will also be bringing us their latest spectacles. Major artists performing live in Seville include Luz Casal, Pat Metheny, Pasión Vega, Víctor Manuel, Rodrigo Leao, Rosario and Noa. And there’s also flamenco, with Miguel Poveda and Estrella Morente. Other more curious initiatives include Swan Lake on Ice and performances for children at Teatro Central: the programme of concerts ‘Kids Rock’ and the storytelling sessions with DJs, ‘La Noche de Los Tiempos’. As is evident, stable cultural activity has now returned to Seville and will continue through to June. The city’s habitual festivals will also re-emerge during the course of the year, including feSt and Dance Month.

he 6th of October is a Thursday; Flamenco Thursday, like the other seven marked in red in the Flamenco calendar until the end of 2011. In total, eight performances will be offered by the Cajasol Foundation at Sala Joaquín Turina as part of the Flamenco Thursday Concerts. Esperanza Fernández from Seville opens the programme with her Flamenco Recital, accompanied by Miguel Ángel Cortés on guitar. On 20 October the flamenco singer Manuel Lombo offers his Lombo Flamenco together with dance by guest artist Asunción Pérez La Choni and Ricardo Rivera, Fernando Romero and Los Melli. Manuel Liñán’s Flamenco Dance Company performs on 3 November. On 10 November Manuel Herrera presents Clavijero Flamenco, while Javier Barón and his flamenco dance concert come to Cajasol on 24 November. December starts out with Isabel Bayón and Company on the first day of the month. Mercedes Ruiz and Santiago Lara will perform on 15 December and La Zambomba Jerezana directed by Fernando Moreno with Sabor Jerez will arrive on 22 December to close the programme. Cajasol continues with its flamenco programme in the Cajasol Cultural Centre following the success of previous years, with packed audiences for all of the concerts. This programme seeks to raise the profile of flamenco and promote young artists and public access to masters of the art, thereby converting the Cultural Centre into an integral part of the city’s flamenco activity through its top quality permanent annual programme. Ticket prices range from 12 to 18 euros.

En sus plazas y calles se concentran las grandes firmas internacionales, que habitualmente eligen las zonas más cotizadas de cada ciudad donde se instalan. Asimismo, es posible encontrarse con establecimientos que comercializan la más virtuosa artesanía típica sevillana. Como se trata de un espacio peatonalizado, el visitante puede pasear tranquilamente y obtener una perspectiva adecuada de los históricos edificios que en ocasiones albergan boutiques, joyerías y tiendas de la más diversa índole. Es conveniente iniciar este itinerario por la Sevilla de las compras desde la Plaza Nueva. Aquí se reúnen las más prestigiosas firmas de moda y sugerentes propuestas de decoración. a tapa es santo y seña de la gastronomía sevillana, al menos en su acepción más popular. Pero su peso específico en la hostelería local, el número de economías domésticas que se confían a esta fórmula del éxito no frena los aires de renovación que siguen el paso de los tiempos. Por eso hoy es posible salir de tapas de una manera que los parroquianos más clásicos no hubieran imaginado jamás. Puede el comensal seguir los cánones tradicionales, no cabe duda, pero por el contrario también se abre ante él un panorama espectacular de pequeñas tabernas, de aire urbano y cosmopolita, donde se amplía el recetario con productos, preparaciones y presentaciones más propias de un mundo globalizado como el que vivimos. Con todo, hay muchas cosas que nos gustan de esta nueva generación de tabernas, y de todas ellas extraemos cinco muestras. Una: el atrevimiento. ¿Cómo si no se puede salir al ruedo culinario de Sevilla ofreciendo tan sorprendentes especialidades? Vinos de autor o de comarcas vinícolas emergentes para descubrir nuevos horizontes al comensal que creía saberlo todo de vinos. Cinco: el servicio. Jóvenes estilizados, ataviados con delantales y uniformes de elegante negro, que saben combinar con maestría el conocimiento de la labor con la simpatía sureña.

he tapa is an essential feature of Seville’s popular gastronomy. However, due to its importance for local restaurants, the number of domestic economies which rely on this tried and tested formula have not prevented the renewal of the underlying concept to keep it as fresh and innovative as ever. Nowadays it is possible to go out for tapas in a manner quite unthinkable for tapas purists some years back. Diners can stick to the classics if they want, of course, but there is also a spectacular range of small bars with an urban, cosmopolitan air and a more extensive range of products, preparations and presentations more typical of the globalized world in which we live. There are so many things that we like about this new generation of bars; here are five of them. One: The boldness. It takes courage to do something different and these surprising dishes certainly are just that: now bull’s tail canneloni au gratin with morel, fresh pan-grilled foie gras with orange wine sauce, wok-fried chicken and kangaroo tenderloin fillets share the menu with all the more typical tapas.

Two: The menu written in chalk on the wall. In view of the entire restaurant, this simple and intentionally retro touch perfectly suits the intended ambience. Three: The decor. At times spartan, almost always minimalist and often functional; regardless, in all cases restrained. Some even have an urban or industrial air. A limited number of carefully selected features in a balanced ambience which is barely altered by the occasional modern art exhibitions to be found in their interior; a way of feeling part of the western world. Four: The original wines. The gastronomic evolution is often not limited to the dishes but is also accompanied (or better ‘matched’) with lesser known wines than the classic Designations of Origin. Signature wines or wines from emerging regions to open up new horizons for diners who perhaps thought they knew it all. Five: The service. Young, stylish bar staff with aprons and elegant black uniforms who know how to skilfully combine their knowledge with a bit of southern hospitality.
