Recap: Chani has a flare and is sick and unable to walk for a few days. Gitty worries about Chani’s future..

CHAPTER

“Gitty, I found a cure!” my sister-in-law Shevy informed me. I rolled my eyes. The amount of advice and “cures” I have been subject to since Chani got sick was unbelievable. Everyone seemed to think they knew the solution to get rid of Crohn’s. I listened to what Shevy had to say just to be polite.

“So my neighbor’s sister’s cousin has Crohn’s, and she said that diet has a huge impact. Basically, there’s this crazy diet called the SCD diet, specifically meant for people with Crohn’s and those types of issues, and she follows it and doesn’t have any symptoms from the Crohn’s! And she doesn’t even need to be on medication. I’m telling you, you should look into it.”

“Hmm, sounds interesting. It would be really nice for Chani to be able to go off medication. I’m a little nervous about the long term effects of being on such strong medication. And it can lose its effect after time.” I was

still skeptical about this diet, though. I had heard it mentioned a few times, and while I didn’t know much about it, it had sounded very extreme.

“Listen, I’ll give you her number, you should call her and speak to her directly.” That was a good idea. I would trust something that I heard first-hand much more than just hearing from someone who knew someone.

After speaking to a few people who had experience with the SCD diet and doing a lot of research, I decided that it was an option worth considering. SCD, which stands for Specific Carbohydrate Diet, was quite intense, with a very strict regimen and no allowances, ever. It involved eliminating any harder-to-digest carbs, which included cutting out all flour and white sugar, in addition to many other foods, like cheese, potatoes, and others. Since the goal was to heal the stomach from Crohn’s, it worked in stages. In the beginning, there were only a few foods allowed – imagine only being able to eat eggs, chicken soup with chicken, and a zucchini kugel made of minimal ingredients - for a few days. As time goes on, more and more foods are added – different vegetables, nut butters, almond flour, and other foods that are healthier

“After much discussion and backand-forth, agonizing over the pros and cons, we decided to try it.”

and easier on the stomach. Eventually, assuming the body responds well, heavier foods can be added, like spelt flour. Besides for severely limiting food options, which would obviously be very difficult for Chani, it would also be hard on me. Like most busy frum mothers, I relied on many shortcuts and store-bought products. In a pinch, I could put up a pot of pasta, grab some pizza dough from the freezer, or buy takeout. With the SCD diet, pretty much everything needed to be homemade, from scratch, as store-bought alternatives often had different additives that were not permitted on the diet. Most foods took a lot more effort to prepare than their regular versions – no 9x13 pan shortcuts here! It was kind of like making Pesach food all year round. Most baked goods required separating eggs, and recipes that called for mayonnaise necessitated using homemade mayonnaise, not just a container from the store. It was a huge commitment, not for the faint-hearted.

The reason why I was considering going ahead with the diet, despite its hardship and inconvenience, was because of the priceless benefits that most diet-followers experienced: relief from Crohn’s symptoms, weaning off of the strong medications used to control

the disease, and in best-case scenarios, going into complete remission from the Crohn’s.

After much discussion and back-and-forth, agonizing over the pros and cons, we decided to try it.

The first few days were torturous for Chani. She sat at the table, staring at everyone else eating their regular food with gusto, while her plate was filled with the same few boring, unappetizing options. I hoped at some point to make meals for the family which Chani would be able to have too, but at this point that wasn’t feasible, obviously.

“Maaaa, I’m starving,” she protested by day two. “And I’m not really in the mood of scrambled eggs again.” Chani wasn’t usually a complainer, but this was incredibly difficult for her. I wondered if this was just the adjustment period, or if it would always be like this for her. Someone I spoke to who had been on the diet herself advised me to give it a month. After that, I could reevaluate exactly how difficult it was, and if it was something worth doing long-term, to gain the invaluable benefits. I resolved to stick it out for the next little bit. Would it be worth trying long-term? Only time would tell.

WAY TO P R OT E C T & N U R T U R E M O M & B A BY

Filled with excitement, anticipation and apprehension, you begin your journey with a prayer for health.

What better way to smoothen the road ahead than applying Prenateven, a natural prenatal cream that includes all mom and baby need for the duration of the journey and beyond?

BE A PROACTIVE MOM

From the early stages, supplying your body with important vitamins is crucial for your baby’s optimal development. Vitamin D3, B12, iodine and of course the biggie, folic acid. You knew that, didn’t you? But did you know that folic acid is only a synthetic form of methyl folate? Most people’s body cannot even absorb folic acid.

Methyl folate is what you want to take. It is the natural and active form of folate and is easily absorbed by the body. It is crucial in preventing neural tube defects such as spina bifida, cleft palate, and potentially hydrocephalus (a condition where excess fluid accumulates in the brain).

The March of Dimes and numerous medical studies emphasize that taking methyl folate greatly reduces the risk of these birth defects.

It’s simple. By applying your daily smear of Prenateven, you supply your body with 800 mcg of methyl folate (the recommended daily dosage), plus 1000 IU of vitamin D3, 100 mcg of B12 and 145 mcg of iodine in each pump.

Think of it as the VIP pass to optimal development — it’s like giving your baby a safe head start while keeping you energized and healthy.

I KNOW I SHOULD, BUT I SIMPLY CAN’T!

But wait, did you say smear?

You know the importance of nurturing your little one from

the early stages, but it’s hard enough to get breakfast down, and you can’t even think of popping that dreaded morning pill too!

Which is why I said smear

As in simply smear Prenateven as directed, and voilà, you’re done with your care routine for the day! No more can’t-swallow-myvitamins guilt. Just a quality topical cream that’s got Mom and Baby fully covered. Your body absorbs all the goodness, and you don’t have to worry about that gag reflex!

Plus, topical absorption is often more effective because it skips the digestive system, ensuring your body gets the complete nutrient package without losing potency along the way.

INTELLIGENT CHILDREN?

YES, PLEASE!

Another crucial topic to think about from the early stages is progesterone.

Progeleven, a powerhouse progesterone cream that supports your baby’s brain development among its many other benefits, directly impacts and boosts your little one’s IQ.

Based on various studies conducted by The Royal Society of Medicine, Dr. Katherina Dalton has reported that babies of mothers who received natural Progesterone during the early stages have that extra smart advantage before they even take their first breath!

development, Progeleven can also be your ally in emotional balance. It has the potential to help prevent postpartum depression (PPD), allowing you to step into motherhood feeling supported and grounded. How?

During the early stages, progesterone production gradually increases and keeps climbing to astronomical levels. At birth, there is an abrupt drop, nearing zero.

There is an almost complete absence of progesterone from the crucial 24-hour period following the birth, lasting up to three months postpartum.

In fact, some women literally feel this shift in their bodies and describe it as, “feeling a deep drop, almost like it completely sucked out my energy.”

With Progeleven, you’re nurturing your baby’s cognitive growth in a naturally simple, yet most powerful way possible.

MAINTAIN STEADY PROGESTERONE LEVELS.

AVOID THE DRASTIC DROP.

Aside from helping your baby’s brain

This absence is the direct cause of PPD. By fortifying yourself with Progeleven, you counteract this drop, and with it the untold suffering of PPD.

You’re not just caring for your baby; you’re caring for yourself, too. And that’s priceless.

REVOLUTIONARY OR RELIABLE?

Although Eleven Vitality is revolutionary to the Heimish market, topical vitamin creams have been around and successfully used for decades.

Expand your horizon. Explore your options. Optimize your body’s vitamin absorption with Eleven Vitality’s exclusive vitamin creams.

Smearing a little love each day is the best selfcare ritual to nurture your well-being and your baby’s development as you travel on this special journey.

ESTHER RAPAPORT

NINE A.M. IS A COMPLETELY FICTIONAL STORY WHICH TAKES PLACE FIFTY YEARS AFTER THE HOLOCAUST.

RECAP OF CHAPTER 46: Babbe gives the vials of blood to Naomi, who brings them to Hauptmann Katarina, who will send them to a lab in the city. Then Naomi goes to her mother-in-law in the manor kitchen to explain why she’s here. She sees something on the container of paprika.

Dena walks angrily to the factory, planning to find out if the secretary is in on this whole “project” or not. She gets lost.

CHAPTER FORTY SIX

On the paprika label, in tiny letters, in German: This product was packaged with the highest standards of hygiene, quality, and freshness. But there is the rare possibility of insects getting into the product after it leaves the factory. Checking is necessary.

came back to the kitchen.

“What else should we take to the table, Mamme?” Eli asked, and before he finished the last word, the cloth napkins were placed in his hands, along with napkin rings and silver chargers.

“Everything should be folded very precisely!” Chani instructed, and the two boys scampered out again.

“Aren’t they tempted to sometimes taste the food?” Naomi asked, sounding as if she’d just woken up from an afternoon nap and was still groggy and confused.

“Naomi?” Chani, her mother-in-law, noticed her strange position. “Yes,” Naomi said as she slowly put the glass jar down on the shelf.

“Is everything okay? You…you weren’t offended by anything I said, right?” She fell silent because at that moment, her sons

“Why, you think they would be? I make every effort to ensure that the food in our house is delicious and plentiful. Here, too, I always make sure they have food, so that the meat and the other problematic foods in this place shouldn’t be a nisayon for them.” Chani shook her head. “But you still haven’t answered me if you were insulted by something I said.” She was on the verge of being offended herself by the probing and apparent rebuke that

her daughter-in-law was insinuating, but shviggers don’t have the privilege of being offended; only their young daughters-in-law do.

“I’m not insulted.” Naomi sat down. “You didn’t offend me at all.”

“So what just happened now?”

“Is-is this the same packaging on the paprika that they always have?”

“The shape of the jar is the same, for years. This orange and green label is relatively new—maybe ten months old, a year…I don’t remember exactly.”

“And this statement?” Naomi glanced at the kitchen door, stood up, and took the canister off the shelf. She handed it to her mother-in-law and pointed to the words that had shocked her.

Chani read them quietly, and her forehead creased. “Nu?” she said after a minute.

“Are there other nations that are careful not to eat insects?” Naomi asked. “In principle? I don’t know about that. Baruch Hashem I am not so familiar with other religions. But from a hygienic point of view, for sure. Who wants to eat bugs?”

“To the extent that they’d write that it’s ‘necessary to check’?”

Chani’s lips puckered. “Could be,” she said. Then she laughed. “Apparently, this factory owner has bugs on his mind, okay? Maybe someone once got upset after finding insects in his product, so he wants to stress that when the product leaves his factory everything is fine, and after that, the customers are responsible for the cleanliness of their own food.”

Naomi was quiet.

Naomi glanced again at the door. “That…that maybe there are other Jews in the world,” she whispered.

“Why, what did you think when you saw this?” Chani asked. Naomi glanced again at the door. “That…that maybe there are other Jews in the world,” she whispered.

Chani snickered, and then a second later, she caught herself. “How?” she asked. “Don’t you read the newspapers that get here, Naomi? How would Jews have a chance to survive in this world?”

“How did we have a chance to survive here for fifty years already?”

“Theoretically, you could be right, of course. But practically? I don’t know. It’s hard for me to believe that it makes sense, and this short message doesn’t justify such a conspiracy. My simple explanation seems more reasonable. Don’t you think?”

Naomi nodded and put the little jar back in its place. “I think I’ll go now,” she said. “Babbe is waiting for me, and so are the children.”

“Good luck!” Chani said warmly. She mused at how those who had warned her were right; the fact that you are your niece’s mother-in-law doesn’t exempt you from sometimes feeling like a real mother-in-law, with all the nuances involved. She picked up the jar that had cast Naomi into such a state, and read the statement again. Then she put the jar back in its place again, one of her eyebrows arched.

Yes, there are always those who claim that a daughter-in-law and motherin-law should not work in the same workspace. She’d always waved that rule

away, because it wasn’t noge’a; she was a lone worker. But it was interesting to discover that even a one-time courtesy visit from her daughter-in-law could leave a bitter taste in her mouth. ***

Binyamin had a feeling that the break he’d taken had lasted longer than expected today. It was true that Hauptmann Wangel wasn’t around, but there was no knowing when he’d be back, or if he would send someone else in his family in his place, or even worse, if Lieutenant Bernard himself would show up.

Actually, Leo Sherer wouldn’t let Binyamin’s lateness pass either, certainly not a late return from his special-privilege break. He picked up his pace as he strode from the cemetery toward the factory. Suddenly he noticed, out of the corner of his eye, a figure leaning against a tree and observing him. He paused for a moment and bent down to fix something on his shoe. Then he stood up and casually glanced in that direction. Immediately, he relaxed; it was just Yanku Elkovitz.

Binyamin waved, but the boy pretended to be checking something on the wide-trunked tree and didn’t seem to notice him. That was a bit strange, because Binyamin was sure that the boy had been standing and gazing at him just a moment ago. He wondered how long Yanku had been watching him—perhaps already from the moment that he’d stood near Tatte’s kever?

Well, if Yanku had seen him come, bend down, nearly flat on the ground, and then freeze in place for a few long moments, it was no wonder that this strange behavior had made him stare.

Maybe he was waiting for no one to be around, and then he’d go over and see what was so interesting on the lower side of the headstone? That was a risk of sorts, because there was no way of knowing if he would stay quiet about it. And the fact that this word had been written on his father’s matzeivah could not get around.

Binyamin slowed his pace, trying to think if he had any way of preventing Yanku from going to the cemetery now. Suddenly, two shaggy-haired children ran toward Yanku, almost bumping into him. “Yanku!” one of them gasped breathlessly. “Gusti is sick!”

Gusti?

“Sick?” Yanku leaped up from his place behind the tree. “Who told you?”

“His tail is down, and he left all his food!”

Binyamin’s wordless prayer had been answered. He smiled as he watched Yanku turn and run with the two children toward the fox kennel. Binyamin continued on his way, trying to think of a suitable excuse that would allow him to return to the cemetery immediately to clean the suspicious word. Maybe he’d quickly finish the inner border of the cross-stitches, and Sherer would be pleased, so he’d allow Binyamin to run and take care of something important. Then he’d make up the lost time after work hours.

The most significant question was first whether he was late now, which would make Sherer angry.

The large clock at the entrance to the factory indicated that he was six minutes late, but Leo Sherer was nowhere to be seen along the corridor, nor in the production hall that Binyamin dashed into, out of breath. He sat down at his table and began to press on the pedal of his machine. His eyes were fixed on the tiny stitches that the thread was drawing along the hem of the light-colored fur, but in fact, with each stitch, he saw only the word that he had left behind in the cemetery.

Turpentine should do a good job of removing it, right?

“I’m happy to see you are working with precision, Binyamin,” a deep voice said from behind him. “This fur is a private order. You remember that, right? We need top-quality work.”

“Yes, Mr. Sherer.” Even if his memory was short, chalilah, after four reminders

“MY EVERY MOVE IS controlled.”

to the same effect, there was no chance he’d forget this.

“Are you doing it the way you should be?” Leo bent down and grabbed a corner of the fur, examining each stitch closely. “Looks very good,” he finally said.

“Baruch Hashem,” Binyamin replied, trying to control his panting. “Mr. Sherer, I remembered that I need to take care of something urgent before the sun sets. Can I go out for a few minutes? I’ll give back the time at the end of the workday.”

“How will you do that? You don’t have a permit to be outside later.”

“The permit the Hauptmann gave me is not time-limited.” Binyamin raised his eyes to the foreman. “I stopped using it when I became ill, but it’s still valid.”

The man sized Binyamin up with his gaze. “Herr Wangel will be back this evening,” he noted. “So don’t think he’s not around, and don’t try to do anything foolish, okay?”

“Of course. What kind of foolishness could I do already?”

The man nodded and continued on his way. Binyamin continued to sew, his eyes focused on the white seam. A few more stitches, and he’d be done with this border. When he’d come back, he’d complete the final row of stitches, and then the job would be done.

He passed quickly and quietly between the workers, looking for his brotherin-law, Aryeh. He found him standing at the first soaking pool, using a long stick to agitate the liquids. Binyamin sniffed. “Aryeh?” he whispered. “Aryeh, can you come with me for a minute to the small storage room?”

“What do you need?” Aryeh wasn’t the talkative type.

“Turpentine. To clean something. It’s urgent.”

“We have it. How much do you want?”

“I don’t know exactly. Maybe a cup or two…”

“Fine. Anything else?”

“Do you have sandpaper? Or something else I can use for scraping?”

“That’s not my domain, but I can give you some. Come.”

Dena’s eyes flitted every which way. She’d passed a few streets trying to find the factory, and the whole area was becoming less and less familiar. What was she supposed to do now?

Perhaps it was a shame she wasn’t a little girl anymore; had she been, she could have stood right here and started to weep. Weeping was a wonderful tool; it made an impression in any language. Although she wasn’t sure that the cold Viennese gentiles would be very impressed, and that was even before she’d assessed their level of anti-Semitism.

How could she tell her mother-in-law that she’d gotten lost? Maybe it was better to try calling the factory and speak to Bentzy. There was a public phone on the corner, but she had no coins or tokens to pay for the call! That was very foolish on her part. Her mother always said you don’t leave the house without money.

She should try to reach out to someone here on the street. She’d manage with the language, one way or another.

“Excuse me,” she stammered in German to a woman who looked decent.

“Can you tell me where—”

“No, I cannot!” the woman barked, and marched off.

ASIAN APPETIZING

There’s nothing more comforting than your typical Chinese dishes. A large bowl of rice, fried dishes and beef and chicken smothered in sauce. Here are some remakes of my favorite takeout dishes.

DEVOIRY FEDER @SPRINKLEDBYVO

EGG DROP SOUP

This soup was created by my mother years ago. It’s so simple to make and is extremely flavorful. It’s also not completely full of the garbage many takeout places have.

Ingredients:

6 Tbsp chicken consommé

1 Tbsp soy sauce

2 tsp onion powder

1/2 tsp white pepper

8 eggs, beaten well

Directions:

1. Fill a 6 qt pot 3/4 of the way with water. Add all ingredients, except beaten eggs.

2. Bring to a boil. Lower to a medium flame and let simmer for 10 minutes.

3. Lower flame fully. Swirl soup with a spoon and slowly let beaten eggs fall into the pot, creating egg drops. Stir continuously with a spoon.

4. Let cook for additional 10 minutes.

PASTRAMI EGG ROLLS

There’s nothing like a classic pastrami egg roll. I made these with wonton wrappers for a mini egg roll. Use regular egg roll wrappers for full sized egg rolls. These have a delicious flavor and can be baked for a healthier option. Just spray with spray oil and bake until crispy.

Ingredients:

1 bag Cole slaw mix

3 Tbsp oil

2 packages pastrami, cut into small pieces

1 tsp kosher salt

1 Tbsp soy sauce

3 frozen garlic cubes

1 cube frozen ginger

2 Tbsp duck sauce

1 package wonton wrappers or egg roll wrappers

Directions:

1. Combine first 4 ingredients in a pot. Cover and cook on the lowest flame for 30-45 minutes, until cabbage is very tender.

2. Add remaining ingredients.

3. Fill wrappers according to size and fry until golden brown.

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 29 & SUNDAY, DECEMBER 1

BEEF AND BROCCOLI

This classic dish is perfect over a bowl of rice. The meat is soft, without falling apart. The sauce is perfectly balanced in sweetness and saltiness. It’s a great dish to add to your supper rotations.

Ingredients:

2-3 lb pepper steak, cut into bite sized pieces

24 oz mini broccoli florets

2 Tbsp oil

1 cube frozen ginger

3 frozen garlic cubes

3/4 cup hot water

8 Tbsp brown sugar

2 Tbsp corn starch

8 Tbsp low sodium soy sauce

1 tsp toasted sesame oil

1/4 tsp red pepper flakes

Directions:

1. In a large saucepan, over medium heat, heat up oil.

2. Pan sear the pepper steak until browned on both sides. Remove from pan and repeat with remaining beef.

3. Once beef is done, add broccoli to the pan. Cover and let steam 10 minutes.

4. In the meantime, combine all ingredients for the sauce.

5. After 10 minutes, add seared beef and sauce to the pan.

BE FIT WITH BENEFIT

QAs the weather is getting colder outside, I find myself gravitating to teas more often. Do teas have caffeine? If so, do some have more or less caffeine than others? Is it ok to drink unlimited tea?

AAs the weather cools down, many of us are drawn to a warm cup of tea to cozy up and unwind. If you're wondering about caffeine in tea, you're not alone! Let's break it down so you can make informed choices and enjoy your tea time without worry.

Do all teas have caffeine? Not all teas contain caffeine. Here’s a quick overview:

1. True Teas- (from the Camellia sinensis plant, such as black, green, white, and oolong teas):

- These naturally contain caffeine, although the amount varies depending on the type and how it’s prepared.

2. Herbal Teas (like chamomile, peppermint, or rooibos):

- These are caffeine-free because they’re made from herbs, flowers, or fruits and not from the tea plant. So, if you’re looking to avoid caffeine, herbal teas are a great option!

Do all caffeinated teas have the same amount of caffeine? No, the caffeine content varies depending on the type of tea and how it’s brewed:

Black tea: Typically has the most caffeine, around 40-70 mg per 8-ounce cup.

Green tea: Contains moderate caffeine levels, 20-45 mg per 8-ounce cup.

White tea: Generally, has less caffeine

than black and green teas, 15-30 mg per 8-ounce cup.

Oolong tea: Falls somewhere in the middle, with 30-50 mg of caffeine per 8-ounce cup.

The steeping time and water temperature also play a role. Longer steeping and hotter water can draw more caffeine out of the tea leaves. If you’re comparing tea to coffee, tea usually has much less caffeine. A typical cup of coffee has about 80-120 mg of caffeine per 8-ounce cup, which is significantly higher than tea.

Can you drink too much caffeinated tea? Like anything, moderation is key! While caffeine in tea is generally lower than coffee, drinking too much caffeinated tea could lead to:

- Sleep disturbances (if consumed late in the day).

- Increased heart rate or jitters, especially if you’re sensitive to caffeine.

- Dehydration, though tea is less dehydrating than coffee.

Most experts suggest keeping caffeine intake under 400 mg per day for adults, which is about 8-10 cups of black tea or 4-5 cups of coffee. If you feel anxious, restless, or have trouble sleeping, try reducing your tea intake or switching to herbal blends.

NASHIM TZIDKANIYOS BEHIND THE SCENES.

Numerous stories have been told about our treasured gedolim. Less is known about their wives. Who were the incredible women who enabled their husbands to become gedolei and poskei hador who served as the heart of Am Yisrael? Who were these neshei chayil who, despite famine in Eretz Yisrael and destruction in Europe, were able to build strong and enduring Torah homes? And what can today’s women learn from them?

AMAZING

TALES OF TZADDIKIM, ALIVE WITH YIRAS SHAMAYIM, EMUNAH, AND MIDDOS TOVOS

On the heels of the widespread popularity of Volumes 1 and 2 of Stories Told by Rav Kalman Krohn, we present you with another tantalizing collection of stories told as only Rav Kalman could… When Rav Kalman Krohn told a story, he had everybody spellbound.

Hearing from the wives and daughters of gedolim, women will come away with advice and inspiration on how to nurture gadlus in their own homes. This is not a book about sacrifice for Torah. Rather, it is a chronicle of the tremendous love of Torah that burned in the hearts of these great women and made it possible for our gedolim to become the Torah luminaries we all know and cherish. BY

As his thousands of avid listeners can attest, this tremendous tzaddik and talmid chacham had the rare ability to weave true stories of yesteryear that kept adults and kids alike at the edge of their seats in suspense, while simultaneously inspiring their hearts and firing their souls. Rav Kalman’s stories weren’t just ma’asalech. His sippurei tzaddikim, like his own essence, were saturated with yiras Shamayim, middos tovos, and Torah lessons. Many of the stories Rav Kalman related are not wellknown, yet they are all sourced in mesorah and the sefarim hakedoshim And they are all action-packed, full of heart-stopping twists and turns that may well cause readers to get the goosebumps!

In Stories Told by Rav Kalman Krohn: Volume 3 , we offer another sampling of the best of Rav Kalman’s stories, for readers of all ages to learn from and enjoy. Sink yourself into these amazing, true tales, and let their power—and that of Rav Kalman’s own neshamah —capture and enrapture you.

A COMPREHENSIVE GUIDE TO THE HALACHOS OF MEZUZAH. How does one establish the correct side of the door where a mezuzah should be affixed? Where is the proper placement of the mezuzah on irregular doorways? Which areas and entranceways are exempt from mezuzah? What is the obligation of mezuzah in places of work, storage areas, public places, or temporary dwellings?

In Ziv Hadeah: Hilchos Mezuzah, RAV ZEV HOFSTETDER methodically explains the laws and customs pertaining to the mitzvah of mezuzah. Clear and comprehensive, this halachic guide illuminates the mitzvah that best identifies every Jewish home.

A THOUGHT-PROVOKING COLLECTION OF TRUE AND FICTIONAL STORIES. Can you feel the desperation of Ratze’le, who thinks she’s engaged, hopes she’s engaged…but cannot really be sure? How about the conflict of Malky’s dilemma, when she is tasked with marketing a brand that is at odds with her ideals?...

You will, when you read this delightful collection of short stories BY SHAINDY WEISS. And that’s not all. Because you will do more than relate to and feel. You will also think. …About what it really means to be “looking for a Hugo Boss suit” in shidduchim. …About the things we lose (other than fallen false lashes) when we strive to cultivate the perfect image... And sometimes, That’s Just the Think !

A NOVEL. Mystery, suspicion, and intrigue fill the palace of Czar Arlavious. Why is Czar Dimitri so intent on his son gaining Czarevna Annalina’s hand in marriage? Who is behind the sudden edict to expel the Jews of Atka?

...And throughout all the drama, Devorah, a young orphan from the Jewish community who, through a series of unfortunate events, has been thrust into the role of the Czarevna’s handmaiden, watches silently and wonders… Can she help out the Jews, in her position at the palace? Or will Dimitri’s diabolical plans play out before she even has the chance?

as they move to Toronto and try to make a living operating a small Jewish bookstore. In particular, it is the story of young Chaimkel Heller, a boy blessed with boundless imagination, who is constantly trying to help his father, with some rather unusual results.

...Parents and educators will also be gratified to find the pages of this book thoroughly imbued with excellent hashkafos and Torah values. Chaimkel the Dreamer will educate the child even as it stimulates his imagination.

2. THE NUGGET

Avraham was known for his excellent Hachnasas Orchim. He cared for people in the technical aspect, ensuring they had food and drink, but even more importantly, he showed interest in them. He cared about people and he showed that. For example, when the 3 angels came to visit him, he jumped up to greet them, even though he was in the midst of a conversation with Hashem!

4. FUN FACT

You or I can only give up something for Hashem because of Avraham Avinu. In fulfilling Hashem’s command to offer up Yitzchak as a Karban, he displayed total dedication to Hashem beyond logic. In doing so, he opened up the channel of Mesiras Nefesh for all Jews for all time.

1. LIFE STORY SNIPPET

Avraham, the first Jew, discovered the One creator and taught this to everyone he met. Whoever he invited into his tent was fed and given a meal for free, as long as they acknowledged Hashem, the creator and sustainer of all. Hashem granted the land of Israel to him, for his descendants. Throughout his life, he withstood 10 tests given to him by Hashem, including Akeidas Yitzchak.

3. BRINGING IT DOWN

When hosting people in your home, take a leaf out of Avraham’s book. It is important to ensure your guests have yummy food and a comfortable bed. BUT, it is equally important for them to feel at ease, to feel that you are glad to have them in your house. Some ways to show this are to smile, make conversation, and ask them about themselves.

5. QUESTION TO CONSIDER

How can you make guests feel comfortable in your home?
