From HOPE to HEALING
AS TOLD TO RAIZY KATZ
Recap: Gitty meets another mother of a Crohn’s patient and is encouraged. She reflects on the toll the disease is taking on all her kids.
CHAPTER
“Bye, have a great day!” I called out. I peeked out the window and watched the receding figure. Chani was finally going back to school! I was so grateful we had reached this point. The new medicine was working well, Baruch Hashem, and Chani was doing much better. Life was slowly getting back to normal. Of course, Chani was still much weaker than most kids, and many times left school early because it got too much for her. We also had to be careful about exposing Chani to germs, because the medicine she was on was an immunosuppressant, which meant her immune system wasn’t functioning properly. But I was confident we were over the worst part of it.
“Ma!” Chani’s frantic cries resounded throughout the house. “I can’t walk!” I came running, and indeed, she couldn’t get herself out of bed. Her legs just wouldn’t support her. I ran to the phone to call the doctor. Chani
hadn’t been feeling well the last couple of days, but this was something she had never had before, and it was scary.
The doctor suggested that there may be inflammation in her joints, preventing her from being able to use her legs, and asked us to bring Chani in. The logistics of bringing an immobile child to an appointment was complicated. My husband had to literally carry Chani down the steps, and a medical gemach lent us a special stroller designed for older kids who can’t walk, which we used to wheel her from the car to the doctor’s office.
Once the doctor checked Chani, he confirmed that it was inflammation causing the issue, and prescribed a high dose of steroids to counteract it. He explained that Chani was undergoing a flare, which is when the Crohn’s disease flares up again, despite the medication that was controlling it. That was why Chani hadn’t been feeling well the past few days - the Crohn’s symptoms had come back.
“The steriods should kick in within a few days,” he said. So for a few days, we literally had a handicapped twelve-
“After all, why would a stomach-related condition impede Chani’s ability to walk?”
year-old. The weird part was that there were no outer signs that were obvious to other people. When someone has a cast on their leg, it’s perfectly understandable that they have trouble walking, but in a situation like this, it’s hard to explain to people what’s going on. After all, why would a stomach-related condition impede Chani’s ability to walk? Chani felt awkward and embarrassed when her friends came over to visit. She wasn’t comfortable going into a whole explanation, but she felt it was strange for her not to walk her friends to the door when they left. In the end, she mumbled something about not feeling up to walking them out, which her friends accepted, despite thinking it was odd. Even within our immediate family, it was a bizarre situation. My little boys laughed that Tatty was giving Chani a ride, as he carried her up and down the stairs each morning and evening so she could join the rest of the family from the couch instead of staying stuck in her room all day.
Needless to say, we all gained a new appreciation for our ability to walk. My birchos hashachar has not been the same since. I knew that there were people who are unable to walk, but seeing it with my own eyes was more powerful than any inspirational speech.
As the steroids helped lower the inflammation, Chani was slowly able to get around again. The Crohn’s symptoms also began receding, and Chani felt better again. Mixed with my intense relief that things were back to normal was a nagging thought at the back of my mind. This could happen again!
I brought it up with the doctor at the next appointment, but he had no reassurances. Flares were unpredictable. Many times they were triggered by stress, or by eating certain foods, but triggers are very individual. What sets off one person will have no effect on another. He suggested keeping a journal to try to track possible triggers, so we can know what to avoid.
This concept was very worrisome to me. How can a person go on with life while knowing that at any point, there is a plausible possibility that they may be out of commission for the next few days, or even weeks? Even if Chani could get by like this during her school years, it wouldn’t work later on. Adults have serious responsibilities, which can have disastrous consequences when left unfulfilled. Moreover, I didn’t see how she could get married and start a family in such a situation, even if she got past the hurdle of shidduchim. What would be? • TO BE CONTINUED

“One who begins a mitzvah is told to finish it, Naomi.” Babbe didn’t expound much. She appeared at the preschool less than fifteen minutes after she’d left, when Naomi came back. Now she was holding a small wooden box and a hastily penciled note.
“What is this?”
“These are the vials,” Babbe said. “And here is a list of the tests we need. I would ask you to ask the Wangels to supply us with new vials, because these are our last ones. But right now, I don’t think you should do it.”
“She’ll think I’m asking for new tests, for someone else,” Naomi filled in.
“Exactly. So, are you going?”
“You’ll stay here in my place?”
“I’m just going to help Dina, Tziporah, and Sima peel some potatoes and turnips, and then I’ll be back.”
“No need!” Katy, the assistant, called from the other side of the room. “It’s okay! Now is the children’s break, and then they do handwork. It’s better that you should help with cooking the food, because when you prepare it, it’s very tasty!”
“What kind of handwork?” Babbe inquired. “Maybe I can be helpful with that.”
“The little ones color and paint, and the boys learn to work with a saw and a hammer,” Rivku said as she approached. “The girls sew buttons. You really don’t need to bother. If it’s necessary, we’ll send some girls to you to help them thread their needles.”
“Excellent,” Babbe said. “My friends are always happy to get visits from the sweet girls in the preschool. So we have a deal?”
“Yes, yes!” Katy declared. “I hate working with needles. They always poke me!”
“Is that okay, Rivku?” Naomi turned her head. “Do you mind if I go now?”
“Fine,” her colleague replied. “But come back after lunch, for math class, okay? I don’t have patience for that.”
“For sure.” Naomi took the box and note from her grandmother,

and they walked out together.
“Tizki l’mitzvos, Naomi,” her grandmother said, looking into her eyes. “You’ll keep davening for me, right?”
“And fasting.” Babbe smiled. Naomi didn’t know if it was a joke. She didn’t think so.
“Babbe, you need to have strength.”
“I’m fine, Naomi,” the older woman answered. “I’m going back to the kitchen, okay? When you get back, come in to tell me—and Tziporah—what happened. She’s very worried about her granddaughter’s husband… Did you see Aunt Chani while you were there?”
“She waved to me from the window. She probably didn’t understand what I was doing there. As soon as the workday is over, I’ll run over to explain to her.”
And she continued on the same route as earlier.
The Wangels’ garden gate was open. She stood and rang once again, until someone looked out of the window from the second floor. “Come in, come in!” she shouted. “Go to the garden, next to the bench!”
Obediently, Naomi walked down the pathways of the garden, pondering that her father had walked these same paths when she was a baby. Who tended to the garden today? She’d never thought about it. She stood near the bench and waited. Within a few seconds, the three ducks approached her. They stood around her, as if waiting for her to give them something. “There are others who enjoy feeding you,” she whispered. “Go to them. I prefer to feed different mouths.”
“Yes, Shvirtz?”
The Hauptmann’s mocking voice came from behind her. “You made it really fast, I see.”
“Yes,” Naomi said politely. “Here are the vials, and this is the list of tests that are needed.”
“Put them inside.”
The other woman rubbed the palms of her hands. Naomi opened the box carefully. Three test tubes lay there, on some soft material, filled with dark, crimson liquid. She placed the note on top of the tubes and closed the box.
“Alright. You’re free to go. Hmmm…” Katarina smiled. “If you want to visit your husband’s mother in the kitchen, I’m sure she’ll be happy to see you. She tried to find out before what you were doing on our private grounds.”
Naomi looked at her, wondering how sincere her intentions were.
“You can go in, from this doorway. Make a left and go till the end; that’s where the kitchen is. And when you see her, give her a message to hurry up with lunch, because I need to leave soon.” She took the box from Naomi. “But make sure not to disturb her work!”
“Of course. Thank you, Hauptmann,” Naomi said and turned to the doorway the woman had pointed to. It was closed, and Naomi hesitated for a minute. She knocked, and when there was no answer, she cautiously turned the
She waited another minute and then two, and then entered and made a left. The strong smell of cooked food hit her nose, convincing her that this was the right place. She crossed through a small, clean, well-heated lobby and advanced, until a short figure appeared suddenly across from her, and cried happily, “It’s Naomi! Mamme, it’s Naomi!”
“Eli, how are you?” his sister-in-law asked with a grin.
“Baruch Hashem, good.”
Her mother-in-law appeared in the kitchen doorway and grasped her tenyear-old’s hand. “Shhh…” she hushed him, tugging him back inside. Then she turned to Naomi with a nervous smile. “What’s doing, Naomi? What are you doing here?”
“They didn’t tell you?” Naomi followed them into the gleaming kitchen. “No.”
“They are so mean. I came to ask for permission for blood tests for Mottel Kush.”
“You? Why you?”
“Babbe asked me to do it. She and Dr. Katzburg have asked for lots of things this winter…”
“I knew that I had a talented daughter-in-law!” Chani sighed. “And now they send her on complicated missions…”
“Baruch Hashem, it wasn’t especially complicated. I talked and talked, and eventually she agreed.”
“Good for you, tzaddeikes that you are. Meir, where are the serving trays? Good, good, and take out the enamel spoons also.”
Naomi lowered her voice. “I just remembered, Katarina asked me to tell you that she has to leave soon.”
“So here we are, almost finished.” Chani took a big tray from her son. “So she sent you to me?”
“Yes. Nice of her, isn’t it?” She looked around. “Can I help with something?”
“Come, take the silver cutlery and napkins out of this cabinet.”
“They carry the tray themselves?” Naomi looked at her two young brothersin-law holding the tray together, as their mother loaded a full platter of meat, a pitcher of fresh juice, and a deep bowl filled to the top with a steaming stew of some kind.
“Of course. Do you know what Aryeh schlepped when he was their age? Such a tray, by himself. Their muscles develop, and that’s only an advantage in this place.”
“True,” Naomi said. “But maybe I can help them, too.”
“I think that every additional hand will just hinder.” Chani chuckled. “They’ve only dropped the tray twice since they started working with me, and I always have reserves of everything, just to be on the safe side…”
“What kind of meat is that?” Naomi asked suddenly.
Chani was quiet for a long moment. “Better you shouldn’t ask,” she said finally. “Not something we can eat.”
Naomi’s eyes followed the two children taking careful steps out of the kitchen.
“But it’s fine, according to halachah, right? I don’t cook them meat and milk together—that I know is not allowed.” Something about Chani’s voice sounded vulnerable suddenly.
“Of course,” Naomi said quickly. “It just came to my mind.”
“What did you think until now? That I cook glatt kosher for them?”
“Honestly, I never really thought about it at all.”
“There are kosher pots here, of course, like the ones I used to prepare the meal for Elky’s wedding. But most of the Wangels’ day-to-day food is not really kosher. I don’t make the effort to check their rice, for example. You understand that, right?”
“Of course, for sure.” Naomi looked for a place to fix her gaze. She suddenly felt so uncomfortable looking into her aunt/ mother-in-law’s face; Chani’s movements had become faster and a bit jerky. “Can I help with anything else?” she asked quietly.
“Yes, thanks. I’d appreciate it if you can put the spice containers back on the shelf. But then go back to Babbe. She’s probably worried and wants to hear that you were successful.”
“Sure,” Naomi said, trying to inject warmth into her voice. She came over to the counter and took the spice containers.
“These are different from the spices they sell in our store,” she said, pointing with her chin toward the window and everything beyond.
“That’s right. The lager camp store is stocked with spices from a very cheap company. For themselves, the Wangels buy
much higher-quality spices, Hanter’s spices.”
“Looks like good stuff.” Naomi picked up the glass bottle that had paprika in it, studying it closely.
Then she fell silent. ***
Dena walked swiftly without stopping. She’d find a way to find out if Suri was part of this plot. It wasn’t nice to call it a plot, when all they wanted—maybe—was to make things better for her.
But if Suri was in on it, then it was a plot, like it or not.
Her anger fueled her energy, and she discovered that there was something that felt good about being angry at an injustice. Her anger propelled her forward. One street, then another, then a left, and she would be at the factory. She wouldn’t ask Suri directly what she knew and what she didn’t.
But she would talk to her now about the list they’d asked her to prepare, and she’d see how Suri would react to that.
Hey, this was supposed to be the street she turned off at.
But if so, where was the factory?

Q: What’s the difference between remediation and acceleration? Which is better? What should I push for in my school?
A: First, I should define what educators mean when they say remediation and acceleration.
Remediation: Remediation is the process by which students fill in “the gaps” in their learning. It is “the correction of deficiencies.” The assumption is that children need to fill in those gaps in order to learn the new material. For example, if a student is determined to be weak in fourth grade math, he might be given remedial instruction in third grade math to go over those basic math skills. The problem with this method is that during this whole time that the student is attempting to learn third grade math, he is missing out on fourth grade math. And, when he gets to fifth grade, he will need to repeat the process again. This creates children who are defeated (and bored!) by a system, feeling as if they will never get anything right.
Acceleration: While remediation focuses on the past, acceleration focuses on the present. What are the students learning this week? Rollins explains, “Rather than concentration on a litany of items the students have failed to master, acceleration readies students for new learning. Past concepts and skills are addressed, but always in the purposeful context of future learning.” A key step in acceleration is to introduce new vocabulary, or terms that will come up throughout the new unit.
For acceleration to work, teachers need to know exactly what they want
their students to know at the end of the unit. And, before the unit begins, the accelerated group would gain an understanding of:
• the unit’s relevance to their own lives and the world around them
• new vocabulary or terms
• basic skills required to understand the concept
• new skills required to understand the concept
By: Rifka Schonfeld, Director S.O.S
Acceleration
Self-efficacy
• the end result of where the unit is going
This format of acceleration requires teachers to rethink instruction because for the first time, the students who are falling behind are getting the acceleration, rather than the students who are already ahead.
The following chart, created by two prominent educational researchers in 2011, lays out the differences between remediation and acceleration.
• Self-confidence and engagement increase.
• Academic progress is evident.
Basic skills
Prior knowledge
Relevance
Connection to core class
Pacing and direction
• Skills are hand-picked just in time for new concepts.
• Students apply skills immediately.
• Key prior knowledge is provided ahead of time, enabling students to connect to new information
• Treats relevance as critical component to student motivation and memory.
• Instruction is connected to core class; ongoing collaboration is emphasized.
• Active, fast-paced, handson.
• Forward movement; goal is for students to learn on time with peers.
Remediation
• Students perceive they’re in the “slow class.”
• Backward movement leads to a sense of futility.
• Instruction attempts to reteach every missing skill.
• Skills are taught in isolation and not applied to current learning.
• Typically does not introduce prior knowledge that connects to new learning.
• Relevance is not seen as a priority.
• Instruction is typically isolated from core class.
• Passive, with focus on worksheets or basic software programs.
• Backward movement; goal is for students to “catch-up” to peers.

BE FIT WITH BENEFIT
AQI have white spots on my nails and they also break easily. Does this have anything to do with a vitamin deficiency? I never used to have this and noticed them pretty recently. Thank you in advance!
I don’t know your age and stage in life, and these factors can make a difference in my answer, but here is a very general answer that should give you the information you are seeking. If you're noticing white spots on your nails or find them breaking easily, you're not alone. Brittle nails are a common concern, often caused by nutritional imbalances, environmental factors, or other health-related issues. Let’s explore why this happens, what might be causing those little white spots, and how to support your nails nutritionally and through other remedies.
Why do nails get brittle? Brittle nails occur when they become weak and fragile, making them prone to splitting, cracking, or peeling. Several factors contribute to this condition:
- Nutritional deficiencies: Nails require specific vitamins and minerals to stay strong and healthy. A lack of these nutrients can result in weak or brittle nails.
- Dehydration: Both internal and external hydration play a role. If your body or nails are too dry, nails can become brittle.
- Frequent exposure to water or chemicals: Constant washing or exposure to cleaning chemicals, detergents, and nail polish removers can dry out nails, making them prone to breakage.
- Aging: As we age, our nails naturally lose moisture and flexibility, leading to increased brittleness.
- Medical conditions: Certain health issues, like thyroid disorders or skin conditions (such as eczema or psoriasis), can impact nail strength.
White spots, medically known as leukonychia, are quite common and usually harmless. If these white spots appear frequently, it may be worthwhile to assess your diet or discuss with a healthcare provider to ensure you're getting all the essential nutrients.
Nails benefit greatly from a balanced diet rich in vitamins, minerals, and healthy fats. Here are some key nutrients and the foods they’re found in:
- Biotin (Vitamin B7): Known for strengthening nails, biotin-rich foods include eggs, nuts, seeds, and leafy
greens.
- Protein: Since nails are made of keratin, a protein, it’s essential to consume adequate protein from sources like lean meats, poultry, fish, beans, and lentils.
- Zinc: Deficiency in zinc can lead to white spots and weak nails. Foods high in zinc include nuts, seeds, beans, and whole grains.
- Iron: Iron is vital for nail health, and deficiency can cause spoon-shaped or brittle nails. Good sources of iron are red meat, poultry, spinach, and legumes.
- Vitamin E: This antioxidant helps protect nails and skin, and can be found in nuts, seeds, and vegetable oils.
- Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Essential for moisture retention, omega-3s keep nails flexible. Incorporate fatty fish, chia seeds, walnuts, and flaxseed oil into your diet.
Here are some more tips to keep your nails strong:
- Keep nails moisturized: Apply cuticle oil or a nailstrengthening cream regularly. Coconut oil, olive oil, and shea butter work well for this.
- Limit exposure to water and chemicals: Wear gloves when washing dishes or cleaning, and try to avoid excessive hand washing.
- Avoid overusing nail polish remover: Many removers, especially acetone-based ones, can dry out nails. Look for acetone-free removers if possible.
- Stay hydrated: Drinking enough water helps maintain nail hydration, making them less prone to breaking.
- Take a biotin supplement if necessary: If you struggle with brittle nails despite a balanced diet, consider a biotin supplement, as studies have shown biotin can improve nail thickness and strength.
If your brittle nails are persistent, painful, or accompanied by other symptoms like hair loss or fatigue, consult a healthcare professional. They can help rule out any underlying health conditions that might be affecting your nails, such as anemia or thyroid issues.

8 ounces cream cheese, at room temperature
2 tablespoons parmesan cheese
½ teaspoon salt
1-2 scallions, thinly sliced, white and light green parts only
2 cloves garlic, crushed
3 tablespoons roasted red peppers (Gefen)
½ teaspoon dried oregano
½ teaspoon dried parsley
½ teaspoon red pepper flakes
5 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted or oil for brushing
Directions:
1. Dissolve the honey, yeast, and water in a small bowl, letting it proof.
2. Meanwhile, in a large bowl, combine the flour and salt. When the yeast has proofed, add it to the flour, along with the olive oil. Knead and shape into a ball. Add additional flour if it seems too sticky.
3. Cover the dough and let rise in a warm area for 30-45 minutes
4. Meanwhile, in a medium bowl, combine all the filling ingredients. Set aside.
5. Once the dough has risen, preheat your oven to 350°, and grease about 16 muffin tins with cooking spray.
6. Punch down the dough and place it on a lightly floured surface. Divide the dough in half. Using a rolling pin, roll the dough into a rectangle with the long edge facing you.
7. Spread half of the cream cheese filling over the top of the dough. Roll up the dough, starting with the long edge facing you, into a tight cylinder. Use a sharp knife to cut the dough into about 7-8 even rounds. Place the rounds into the greased muffin tins. Repeat with the remaining dough and filling.
8. Let the buns rise for an additional 20-30 minutes, then brush with melted butter or oil.
9. Bake for 40-45 minutes, or until golden brown. Remove from oven and brush with some additional melted butter or oil. Enjoy warm.
CRISPY SESAME STICKS
These delicious gourmet breadsticks are the perfect thing to have on hand Motzei Shabbos or for easy dipping all week long.
Ingredients: DOUGH:
2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast (or one package)
1 tablespoon honey
1 cup warm water
1 tablespoon oil
2 1/2 cups flour (plus a little extra for kneading)
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1 ½ cup black and white sesame seeds
½ teaspoon flaky sea salt or kosher salt
2 tablespoons honey
½ cup warm water
4. Preheat your oven to 375° and line 1-2 baking sheets with parchment paper.
5. Divide the dough into 20 balls. Roll each ball into a long rope. The thinner the stick, the crispier the breadstick. You can choose to do ropes or round bagel-style. Try to make the breadsticks the same size to ensure even baking.
6. In a 9x13 pan, spread the sesame seeds and flaky sea salt. In a separate 9x13 pan, whisk together 2 tablespoons honey and 1/4 cup warm water until fully combined.
7. Dip each breadstick into the honey water mixture, then roll it in the seeds to coat. Place each breadstick on the parchment-lined baking sheet. Repeat the process with the remaining dough.
8. Bake for 17 minutes. Remove from the oven and flip the breadsticks. Bake for an additional 17 minutes, until golden brown.
9. Transfer to a cooling rack to cool completely. Serve with the dip of your choice.
TIP: Store in a container for up to 5 days. The breadsticks will continue to dry out and crisp up if you leave the container open. These freeze great as well.

6. Brush the dough with a thin layer of oil. Evenly sprinkle a ⅓ of the filling. Drizzle some chocolate syrup on top, if preferred.
7. Roll up the dough, starting with the long edge facing you, into a tight cylinder. Gently squeeze the cylinder to seal. Use a sharp knife to cut the dough into ¾ inch even rounds.
8. Place the pinwheels on the prepared baking sheet and repeat with the rest of the dough and filling.
9. Bake the pinwheels for 23 minutes or until golden brown and crisp. Bake for longer if you prefer a crispier exterior. Remove from oven and let cool. Enjoy!

Chaimkel the Dreamer is the wonderfully funny and heartwarming story of the trials and tribulations of the Heller family as they move to Toronto and try to make a living operating a small Jewish bookstore. In particular, it is the story of young Chaimkel Heller, a boy blessed with boundless imagination, who is constantly trying to help his father, with some rather unusual results. ...Parents and educators will also be gratified to find the pages of this book thoroughly imbued with excellent hashkafos and Torah values. Chaimkel the Dreamer will educate the child even as it stimulates his imagination. BY

NASHIM TZIDKANIYOS BEHIND THE SCENES. Numerous stories have been told about our treasured gedolim. Less is known about their wives. Who were the incredible women who enabled their husbands to become gedolei and poskei hador who served as the heart of Am Yisrael? Who were these neshei chayil who, despite famine in Eretz Yisrael and destruction in Europe, were able to build strong and enduring Torah homes? And what can today’s women learn from them? Hearing from the wives and daughters of gedolim, women will come away with advice and inspiration on how to nurture gadlus in their own homes. This is not a book about sacrifice for Torah. Rather, it is a chronicle of the tremendous love of Torah that burned in the hearts of these great women and made it possible for our gedolim to become the Torah luminaries we all know and cherish. SMART BEHAVIOR
Ari Lakritz,
PsyD, Licensed
Clinical Psychologist, shares how smart diagnosis can be studied and practiced very cleverly without social media.
Tell us a little about yourself.
I live in Missouri and am a clinical psychologist with a doctorate in psychology. I went to Yeshiva University for my undergraduate and then I went to William Paterson University in New Jersey for my doctorate.
I serve as a psychologist on the medical staff at a general hospital in Illinois and have a private practice on the side. I provide therapy services and psychological assessments, which involves diagnosing people with conditions such as ADHD, autism, different emotional disorders, etc.
How long have you been in the business?
I got my doctorate about four years ago.
Have you ever had a smartphone or social media?
Not in my adult life. I have never had a smartphone, but I did briefly have social media when I was younger. So I do have some understanding of the potential danger there.
Is this not one of the industries which requires a smartphone?
All of my colleagues have them, and I don’t know too many people in my position or similar fields who don’t have smartphones. However, I personally don’t see that it’s more beneficial or not possible to manage without one.
There are many heterim available, and your field would definitely warrant such a heter. Why don’t you get one?
I am not a member of a kehillah where there is a blanket issur or any specific stringencies, but I feel confident that this is not right for me. Firstly, I feel like I gain more out of not having a smartphone than I actually lose: It helps me block out a tremendous amount of distraction from my daily life, allowing me to be present with the people I work with, whether meeting with them for psychotherapy or whether for some type of assessment or diagnosis, etc.
I don’t feel a smartphone is worth all the downsides that come with it. Not even
I don’t actually see what specifically requires a smartphone — even as a doctor — that can’t be done with a regular phone.
talking about ruchniyus, just in terms of the distractions.
Then there is, of course, the ruchniyus factor. Not having a smartphone or social media insulates me from a lot of very negative influences.
You don’t feel like a doctor needs to have one?
Many places have apps that one needs to sign into in order to get specific services, but I have found that there’s usually a way around. It may take a little bit of preparation that way, but it’s certainly viable. This is true for me.
However, I never judge someone for having these devices — I don’t know their industry and their needs, etc.
But as far as I’m concerned, I don’t actually see what specifically requires a smartphone — even as a doctor — that can’t be done with a regular phone. At most, a more sophisticated phone could do the job.
Someone might prove me wrong, but according to what I have seen amongst my colleagues, I often wonder what “business” people are so busy with on their smartphones.
Don’t doctors need instant responses?
Obviously, when in my office I have my desktop
computer just like in any other work environment, and can respond in a timely manner.
When I am out of the office, if it’s a sensitive period where I feel the need to be on call for something important, I make sure to be around a laptop to have access to email and things like that, and arrange my schedule accordingly.
Just like the olden days when people worked with beepers and knew to call people when they got a beep, I have my cell phone on, where I receive phone calls and know that I should send emails, etc., from my computer.
Do you not agree that having one would be more convenient?
It’s a small investment of time in the short term, but I believe it saves a lot in the long run, not being busy with irrelevant things.
Indeed, not having apps like Waze or Google Maps, not being able to buy products instantly or check bank accounts immediately, means a little bit of inconvenience.
It does require more preparation, for example, to plan out the address of where one needs to go or the number of someone one may want to call when there.
But it has an advantage as well, as things can’t be done so instantly. When one thinks of an item they want to buy, they don’t just buy it on a whim;
rather, they write it down on a pad of paper or a sticky note to remind themselves later.
Have you ever had any requests from a boss that you should have a smartphone?
No. I have had different professors who have suggested I get an app or colleagues who wanted me to join a chatting app or things like that. I politely decline and explain why.
What are your colleagues’ reactions?
Their initial reaction ranges from surprise to slight amusement. They will sometimes ask why I don’t have, to which I offer a simple explanation: “I try to be a good example to my family and patients, and I feel that securing myself from distractions brought about by a smartphone and social media is one of the ways to do so. It is also to insulate myself from a lot of the negative news.”
How do they react to your explanation?
Although they may not always
It can be hard when one’s entire shul is signed up to a group and one is the only one not part of it.
praise me, they definitely understand. Others respond with admiration and say things such as, “Wow. I should really follow in your footsteps!” Or something like, “You go, man — stay the way you are, don’t switch over! This has caused me more problems than you can imagine.”
What
are your patients’ reactions?
I don’t flash this to them, but if they happen to notice me on my flip phone and it comes up that I do not have access to social media, I explain it to them:
I am primarily involved in working with and treating teenagers who have ADHD, and obviously their concentration is hindered further when bombarded with information every second from different directions.
One of our goals as psychologists is to try and remove the two biggest negative stressors: network news and social media. I practice what I preach.
I do get a number of comments that it’s something to aspire to, to emulate, and a good example for my children.
It shows them that you don’t have to sacrifice being a normal person by not having social media. I think this means a lot to people to see that one doesn’t need to spend time on social media in order to succeed.
Where
do you get your chizuk from?
From my wife and my children. My Rav is also very supportive.
Baruch Hashem, I have a few young children. My
wife is extremely supportive, often commenting that I am a good example to them.
Being someone in the professional world — the medical field — most people would describe me as a “normal guy.” I have a lot of interests as well, such as science and history, and I’m certainly not “closed off,” as one might call it. But despite this, it’s not necessary to have a smartphone or social media to know what’s going on in the world.
I also don’t want it to be part of their childhood memories to have a father who is glued to his phone watching clips all day.
Children will not differentiate what you are using your device for and why — the main thing is, you have it, and they will also want one.
Is it not hard, especially when surrounded by other Yidden who have them? Do you get compliments or the opposite?
It can be hard when one’s entire shul is signed up to a group and one is the only one not part of it.
Klal Yisrael is diverse. For those who don’t have, it’s standard not to. Those who do don’t want to discuss the matter.
People have to rely on their own confidence rather than dreaming that they will have a group of people cheering behind them. A person has to decide where he stands and be strong.
But I feel very strongly, for myself, that I’m able to do this. I have always found a way to do this, and I plan on continuing. I don’t feel it’s worth being slightly more in the “social loop” at this expense.
It’s also an advantage not to be in the loop, since being in the loop often involves hearing the most recent joke or clip, etc., which is not a good thing.
Perhaps they are even exposing themselves to a lot of risk when it comes to certain social media, which starts by sending “harmless jokes.”
How much can these devices impact on various areas of life?!
I question, when thinking about things in creative terms, that even if one has to change certain aspects of their lifestyle — are they really losing anything? It will feel different, they won’t be exposed as much, but that’s ultimately a good thing.
Any interesting stories?
I’ll admit I don’t have a groundbreaking, jaw-dropping story to tell. I wish I had a story of a huge reward or nes for not having social media. We don’t always see those. However, I do have a self-made tale of satisfaction and pride.
What’s the atmosphere in college like when studying for this kind of position?
In academic fields, such as graduate school, one is surrounded by very smart individuals — sometimes the top 10 students from their schools. It’s a very competitive environment.
One has to look for an advantage over one’s fellow students. The ability to focus more, having less distractions, annoyances, entertainment, just in your pocket, pulling one away from one’s work, can be a major advantage. I’ve seen myself able to focus better in class than people I consider to be more intelligent who have smartphones.
Students actually used their phones in class?
Actually, I was shocked to see clever, diligent students getting distracted by every little nudge of their phones. Not everyone is like that, of course, but it’s very prevalent, even at the graduate school level.
I was in a class where the students were interacting with each other via social media while the professor was teaching.
These are people training to be psychologists, doctors, etc. — people are still into sending each other pictures and jokes.
I often look at people as being weighed down by these distractions. Although they may be highly intelligent, and I’m impressed with what they do, I wonder what would happen if they really cut out a lot of the influences pulling their concentration away, such as streaming movies.
Having said that, one can’t really expect too much from someone without our values, but I often ponder what would be if they were not checking their phone every five seconds or chatting with other students in class on social media. I imagine that they would be able to accomplish much more. n

1. LIFE STORY SNIPPET
2. THE NUGGET
Noach was considered a Tzadik only in his generation, but he nonetheless mirrored the qualities of Tzadikim in generations to come, specifically Avraham, Moshe, and David. For example, just like Avraham stood up against the entire world in his belief in one G-d, so did Noach stand up against his whole generation, refusing to be dragged into their immoral ways.
4. FUN FACT
Noach was given his name because it comes from the Hebrew word Lenoach “to rest.” They said of him, “he will give us rest (Yonach) from the work of our hands,” which came to fruition as Noach invented plowing tools, easing the amount of work people had to do in their fields.
Noach was the only one in his generation to follow in Hashem’s ways, while the rest of society was immoral and evil. To reset mankind with a clean slate, Hashem sent a flood that destroyed the entire world, except for Noach and his family. He instructed him to build a Teiva where they would find refuge until the flood was over. A year later, after being instructed to leave the Teiva, Noach offered Karbonos to Hashem. A rainbow then appeared in the sky, a sign of the promise that Hashem would never destroy the world.
3. BRINGING IT DOWN
We can stay strong in our values, and not be swayed by people around us. For example, if your class decides it would be funny to draw pictures on the bathroom walls, you can tune in to your inner voice and recognize that ruining someone else’s property is not right. If you decide not to join them, it may make you feel unpopular, but know that you are just like Noach and are doing what Hashem wants of you.
5. QUESTION TO CONSIDER
What is a motto to keep in mind that can help you stand up to negative peer pressure?
Begin by filling the large container with water until ¾ full.
Pour small amounts of your cups into the bottle and watch how they slowly travel through the water!
RAINBOW RAIN NOACH
In each of the 3 small cups, pour 2 tsp. of water with a few drops of food coloring, and mix well.
Pro Tip: leave some time in between pouring different colors to get the rainbow effect.
Spray shaving cream on the entire opening, making sure it’s covered.
Enjoy watching your rainbow rain! And if you want, you can empty the container… and do it again!
Clouds hold tiny water droplets. When too much water collects, depending on the temperature it falls as rain or snow. In this experiment, the shaving cream is like a fluffy cloud, and the colored water is like raindrops. As the cloud fills up, it gets too heavy, and the colored water falls down through the shaving cream, showing how rain forms!
