Because Daddy needs a checkup, too.
This summer, remember that being a Tatty means showing up for everyone else—so make sure to show up for yourself, too. Rambam Family Health is here to help you reset, recharge, and stay on top of your health. Because when people count on you, taking care of yourself isn’t a luxury—it’s a responsibility.
NINE A.M. IS A COMPLETELY FICTIONAL STORY WHICH TAKES PLACE FIFTY YEARS AFTER THE HOLOCAUST.
RECAP OF CHAPTER 77: Josef Wangel is more furious than he’s ever been before. He demands that Leo find the communications device or phone that was used in the camp, as well as the people who were using it. He swears to kill every Jew in the camp if it was a phone. Sherer calls for an urgent meeting of every resident in the camp, in an effort to figure out who and what this was. Suddenly he remembers about Binyamin and his delusions…and his phone.
CHAPTER SEVENTY EIGHT
Rambam, Sefer Hamada, Hilchos Yesodei HaTorah, Ch. 5:5
…If the idol worshipers said to them, “Give us one of you and we will kill him, and if not, we will kill all of you,”…and they should not give…one of Am Yisrael. And if they specified and said, “Give us Ploni or we will kill all of you,” then if he is guilty…they should give him to them. And they are not instructed to do this l’chatchilah. And if he is not chayav misah…and they should not hand over… one of Am Yisrael.
“And even if you were deserving,” David answered, after slowly reading the relevant lines, “it says here that ‘they are not instructed to do this l’chatchilah’! But go and explain that to my father-in-law.”
“Thank you for warning me.” Binyamin’s face was ashen as he leaned on the tree. “In any case, this is what it says regarding everyone in the camp. But what am I, for my part, supposed to do now? The Rambam doesn’t say anything here about that.” He reached out, closed the sefer, and gave it a kiss. “I wouldn’t want to think that everyone will be punished because of me. Maybe it’s better if I go now to speak to your father-in-law. I won’t tell him, of course, who came to warn me.”
“You’ll go to him?”
“I’m seriously thinking about it.”
“Binyamin put the open sefer into David Elkovitz’s hands, his eyes flitting all around. “It seems that Wangel has specified me, because they are looking for the one who spoke on the device, and that’s me. The thing is that I didn’t really do anything that makes me deserving of death!”
“Look,” Elkovitz said hesitantly, “I would want to tell you that he will certainly act like a gentleman, and will let you choose what to do. But I’m afraid that if he decides that you’re endangering everyone else, he won’t go to check, like you did, what the halachah says.” His eyes blinked rapidly. “Not to mention the
fact that they may try to get out of you where you got the device from.”
“I won’t say a word, and I’m not bringing the phone with me in any case,” Binyamin said firmly, swallowing hard. “You said they threatened that if they discover that it’s an actual telephone, and not an internal communications device, they will kill everyone!”
“Well, that’s something that Wangel shouted in a moment
“And can anyone guarantee what he will or won’t do in another moment of fury?”
David was quiet.
“The phone will stay where I buried it. I would want to ask Rav Schwartzbrod what to do, but I’m assuming that your father-in-law is doing a house-to-house search for me, and I don’t want to get the Rav in trouble, and have them blame him for being part of all this.”
Binyamin took a deep breath, and his voice trembled. “The danger to the entire camp is too big, David, and based on what I know, even if you are not allowed to turn me into them, I am allowed to turn myself in. And it will be a good, fair, and noble thing for me to turn myself in.”
“I don’t know if the Nazis will suffice with that. They will want to see which device you spoke on, and they will demand to know who you spoke to.”
“If I would know which part of the conversation they heard, I’d make up a story.” He sighed and looked back. “But regarding the device they’ll demand to see, maybe you can rustle up something else for me? You once said you have all kinds of electronic parts in your house.”
“I think that the old communication radio from the office, the one that they used until a few years ago, is still in our house. My children used to play with it when they were little,” Elkovitz said, perking up a bit. “My wife is probably at the factory now with everyone else, but I’ll check if I can give you something that will look plausible.”
“Excellent. I’ll wait for you here in this area.” Binyamin squinted. They both heard talking in the distance. “I’ll climb up one of the trees and try to hide. When you come back, I’ll come down to you.”
“And daven for me.”
“For sure. And don’t forget that the tefillah of the sick person for himself is favored.”
“I won’t forget.” A genuine smile crossed Binyamin’s face, as he looked from side to side to find a good tree. Elkovitz turned away and broke into a run. He bypassed a few trees and headed down the hill. He had no time to check if he was leaving footprints in the dry ground. He heard more noises, and presumed that his father-in-law had sent some workers to search for Binyamin. He himself was not considered a suspect, but if he would be discovered in a place where he wasn’t supposed to be right now, especially running frantically as he was, it would be very suspicious. Less than five minutes later, he was standing behind his

house, trying to catch his breath. He opened the door and entered; it was empty, as expected. He locked the inside bar of the door and ran to the place where the tools and parts had been stored for all the years. After rummaging quickly, he found the old walkie-talkie device from the office. He saw that the back cover was missing and that the thin wires inside were partially torn. No one would believe that Binyamin had actually been able to speak on this device just a short time before. It hadn’t worked for at least ten years.
He had no time to think or to find another solution. Every minute that passed increased the danger. He slipped the device deep into his pocket and walked outside again. A tense silence filled his ears.
Some distance away, he noticed his fatherin-law, standing in the middle of the path and looking every which way. His face was white. Something about the sight aroused a strong sense of compassion in David.
sure he’s going to turn himself in. I’m going to speak to him now, on condition that no one comes and tries to grab him with force.”
“What?” Leo grasped his son-inlaw’s hand. “David, do you realize what is going on? Our lives are in danger!”
The younger man nodded. “I realize. And that’s why I’m going to get Binyamin.”
His father-in-law looked at him, and his eyes suddenly darkened.
“You were also in the group that he organized,” he said. His breathing started coming in rapid spurts, and he emitted a wheezy, whistling sound. “I heard something about it, but I thought that the person who told me that he had also identified your voice was just trying to cause discord between us. Tell me the truth: You ran to the clinic before. Did you do that to warn him about me?”
Leo’s thick eyebrows rose. “The truth?
Which truth?”
But the thought of Binyamin huddled high in a tree, trying to stay hidden by the foliage, filled him with even more compassion.
“What’s going on, David?” Leo asked him in a stable tone. “Did you meet any of those who I sent out to find Schvirtz?”
“No, but I’m going to join them now.” Elkovitz glanced at the man who suddenly looked much older than his sixty-seven years, and a thought came to mind. “By the way, I don’t think we have to worry too much,” he said quietly, and added to himself, “Please, Hashem.” “What did you say?”
“I said…I said I don’t think we need to worry too much. I think I know where Binyamin is, and I’m pretty
“Not exactly.” David shifted in his place. “The minute the news reached the clinic that you had been summoned to the manor house, he figured out what happened and left the clinic right away, himself. I met him near the shul; he went to find out what halachah says that he should do.”
“Halachah!” Leo tossed his head. “And then you warned him.”
“You could say.”
Leo’s wheezing continued, sounding worse than a harsh winter wind shrieking in the night. David hoped he wasn’t going to hit him now—or, alternatively, collapse right there. “But what are you doing, David? ! You don’t care to kill everyone? !”
“We are not killing everyone, Papa,” David whispered. “On the contrary. We are going to save everyone. I know where the device that
“MY EVERY MOVE IS controlled.”
Binyamin used is, and he and I are going to say that he tried to call our office, and I was there and I answered him. And that is what the young Nazi, yemach shemah, heard.”
“Don’t speak that way about people who have been saving our lives for decades!”
“They are not saving us; they are exploiting us.”
Leo breathed hard. “He’s convinced you, too, of all his crazy fantasies? ! Are you also one of the planners of this uprising? !”
“We didn’t plan any up—”
“I don’t believe that this is what my son-in-law was doing behind my back!” He fixed David with a long, sharp look, and then his eyes narrowed. “But that’s not true! You didn’t answer him in the office! I asked Eva, who stayed in the office during the funeral, and she told me that no one was using the device in the office at that time!”
“Then she’ll have to change her mind, for the sake of peace and all of our lives. Do you know that it’s allowed, Papa?” David’s voice was trembling, and he didn’t know if it was emotion or fear or the tremendous responsibility he had just taken on his shoulders. He just hoped that Suzy wouldn’t faint. And that nothing bad would happen to her. Or to him. Or to anyone else. Please, Hashem. “What are you whispering there again?” Leo’s voice was
“I was praying,” his son-in-law said. “And tell Eva that if they ask her, she should say that the device in the office beeped, and that I was there and answered the call. She can say she wasn’t standing nearby, so they won’t grill her about how long we spoke and about what.”
“But why, David, why?” Leo began to walk, zigzagging a bit, toward a tree trunk on the side of the path. David hurried after him and offered a hand to help him sit, but Leo sharply shook off the outstretched arm.
“Because for the benefit of us all, it is better that the Wangels should think that this is what happened than to know the truth.” David fingered the device in his pocket. Leo’s thick eyebrows rose. “The truth? Which truth?”
“The truth that Binyamin tried to tell you: that he has spoken on a telephone with Jews who live in freedom in Vienna. Halevai they picked up on his distress, and that they understand that we need help urgently, and that they think of a clever and safe way to come and save us.
But I’m afraid that over the course of the conversations, he only stressed that they shouldn’t do anything before we ask clearly for their help, because it’s so dangerous. In short, we’re more or less on our own to deal with this.”
“Not on our own,” David corrected himself. “With Hashem’s help. Now I am going to Binyamin, and we will try to come back to you as fast as possible with a solution.”
And he ran toward the forest, not allowing himself to turn back to look at his father-in-law, who remained sitting on the tree stump, his eyes open wide in shock. TO BE CONTINUED >

Hello Kitty
COOKIE RECIPE:
2 sticks margarine
1 ½ cups sugar
1 tbs vanilla sugar
2 eggs
3 ½ cups good quality flour
¾ tsp baking powder
½ tsp salt
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
Cream marg, sugar and vanilla sugar on high speed. Add eggs. Reduce speed. Add baking powder, salt and slowly add the flour.
Roll out dough and use cookie cutters to create your shapes.
Bake for 9-11 minutes.
Cookies should be a light yellow color, not brown.
ROYAL ICING RECIPE:
3 egg whites
1 lb confection sugar
Few drops of water
Beat egg whites with electric beaters until stiff. Reduce Speed. Slowly add confection sugar while mixing on low speed. Add a few drops of water. Combine.
You now have icing which is a thick consistency. This is good for outlining, writing, or adding any details on top of your cookie. For the cookie backgrounds or areas that need to be smooth, you need flood consistency. You do this by adding a few drops of water until you reach a smooth consistency.
Divide icing into separate bowls and add food coloring or gel as needed.
You are now ready to fill piping bags!
Surprise your sister, niece, daughter or granddaughter with this adorable hello kitty cookie! Or better still, do it together with her! Create an adorable masterpiece and memories to last a lifetime!

QI find that I am struggling with the long Fridays and long Shabbos afternoons, food-wise. I nibble and pick all day because I am hungry and also because I am not very busy on the longer Fridays. I find that that makes me start off Shabbos on the wrong foot, and things spiral out of control easily thereafter. Do you have any tips to help me cultivate better habits for Friday and Shabbos afternoons?
AMany people find the rhythm of long Fridays and extended Shabbos afternoons challenging, especially when the hours stretch and unstructured time meets easy access to food. What you’re describing is a common pattern: mindless picking out of boredom or habit, which can set an emotional and physical tone that lingers throughout Shabbos.
Here are several practical and mindful strategies to help you gain control once again:
1. Reframe the day with a light structure: Unstructured time often leads to unconscious habits. While Fridays are busy in the morning with Shabbos prep, the lull in the afternoon can feel like a vacuum. Try adding gentle structure to the day:
• Schedule set breaks: Instead of grazing throughout the afternoon, plan one or two intentional snack breaks. This can reduce impulse eating.
• Set "kitchen closed" hours: post-prep, try physically cleaning and covering food as a visual cue that eating time is over until Shabbos begins.
2. Eat a balanced, satisfying Friday lunch: Sometimes we snack excessively simply because we’re genuinely famished. A rushed, light, or carbheavy lunch won’t hold you for long.
• Aim for balance: Include protein, healthy fats, and fiber to promote satiety.
• Eat mindfully: Sit down, make a plate, and eat slowly. This helps your body register fullness and satisfaction.
• Do the same with your erev Shabbos meal. Sit down to eat a filling meal such as chicken soup, chulent and a sugar free cucumber salad.
• 3. Identify emotional and habitual triggers: Long Fridays and Shabbos afternoons can highlight
emotional hunger—feeling bored, lonely, or antsy. Food becomes a filler.
• Check in with yourself: When you reach for a nosh, ask, “Am I hungry, or am I looking for distraction?”
• Create a comfort list: Have a list of soothing or enjoyable non-food activities (reading a magazine, a short nap, a phone call to someone etc.)
4. Make Shabbos snacks intentional, not impulsive: On Shabbos afternoon, especially in the summer, long hours and limited distractions can make it easy to eat out of boredom. A few ways to help:
• Set a formal snack time, e.g., one hour after the meal.
• Pre-portion snacks instead of leaving out an open plate of snacks.
• Have non-food-based rest time: a nap, quiet learning, or a walk with family or friends can replace the nosh-table habit.
• Sit down to an official shalosh seudos meal with proteins, carbs, fats and a salad and let that be a filling supper portion for you.
5. Speak kindly to yourself: When things don’t go as planned and you find yourself picking again, avoid self-blame. Instead of spiraling, pause and reset.
• “This didn’t go how I hoped, but I can still choose differently for the rest of the day.”
• Compassion helps stop the cycle of guilt-eating far more effectively than criticism.
• Shabbos comes around every 7 days. No surprises here! You can tell yourself that next week you get to try again, and always, ask Hashem to help you out and help you reach your goal!

And then Leiby, you did something so out of character. You left us and went to a better place. You left us bereft of you and your loving personality, and you left us with a gaping, Leiby -sized hole in our heart- and went to be ןוילעה

Leiby, daven for us and care for us like you did when you were here between us. Daven and be a - ץילמ רשויan advocate- first and foremost, for your incredible parents, who believed in you and gave you more and more and much more with such טפאשיירטעג to build you up to your utmost. They have taught us a gevald about what it means to believe in a child wherever they are at, and get them to the best place they can be-your happiness and satisfaction always proved that. And Leiby, be a רשוי ץילמ for us and for

Kumzitz Around the campfire
Stories that make the song play in your head and morph into something greater than the sum of lyrics and melody; an impetus for introspection and growth.
ROUGH TRANSLATION:
Angels of mercies, put our mercies, Before the Lord of mercies
Propagators of prayer, make our prayer heard, Before Hearer of prayer
Propagators of cries, make our cry heard, Before Hearer of cries Presenters of tears, put put our tears
Before King Who gives in to those in tears, Do your best and lift up prayer
Lift up prayer and supplication, Before King high and exalted King high and exalted
This song, excerpted from Selichos, was originally composed by Chaim Banet. R’ Yonasan Schwartz added the Yiddish stanzas.
AS TOLD TO ESTY STEINMETZ
The door swung open loudly, the peal of children’s laughter and bike horns wafting in.
“Chaim, how was cheder?” I asked, infusing my voice with as much enthusiasm as I could muster. I looked up from the green beans I was stirring, but Chaim’s face was indiscernible.
“Can I go out and play with Shea and Dovi? They’re outside on their scooters.” He asked in lieu of a greeting.
I nodded, sighing. “Oh, and also we got a paper for our mothers to sign,” he recalled, digging into his backpack and pulling up a paper, edges curling inward.
“Oh? What does it say?” I asked off-handedly. I looked up to see Chaim’s face, blank and shuttered, eyes fixed somewhere behind me. A thick mass formed in my throat. I looked away, away from the expressions lurking in these deep brown eyes. I skimmed the paper and forced a smile, trying to keep my voice upbeat.
“It says that you’ll be going on a nature trail next week Tuesday, a full day’s trip. Everyone should bring along lunch, a snack, and water. They need every parent’s signature.”
Chaim whooped and fetched a pen. I scribbled the signature and gave it back to Chaim, who carefully folded it and returned it to his backpack.
“Ok, I’m going out now, Mommy. Bye.” He called yet again. The door slammed again, and I returned to the pot with a weary sigh.
The wilted green beans frowned back at me.
Chaim. My oldest child, bright, sociable, and inquisitive. Chaim, who at nine years old still doesn’t read.
I dredged the chicken strips in flour, transferred it to the pan, and added water and spices to the mixture. The pot boiled. I turned the knob to low and sank onto a chair near the table, sinking my elbows on the sticky surface.
Hashem, what will be with Chaim? What will his future look like?
He was enrolled in a specialized class where the Rebbe devoted extra time to every student’s progress. He was called out of class daily for oneon-one kriah help. We were shelling out hundreds out of pocket every month for a kriah specialist after cheder hours. And still, Chaim couldn’t read.
A feeling of fatigue completely overtook me. The bag of spaghetti on the counter loudly called my name, and I heard the cheery tune that signified the load was done and ready to be transferred to the dryer. But I remained sitting, lacking the basic energy to do any of my usual tasks.
The baby cried just then. Resignedly, I pulled myself up from my perch and bent over her crib. The dark eyes, so like Chaim’s, lit up when she saw me, her pudgy hands reaching for me between the crib bars. My heart ached as I picked her up and snuggled her on my shoulder.
With her, it was so simple. But who would help Chaim, bring the light back into his eyes?
The day felt more difficult than usual, with the weight of Chaim’s difficulties bearing down on me. No, it wasn’t anything new, but the kriah specialists
were only becoming more discouraging as time went on. And any time it reared its head, showing how it could affect the minutiae of Chaim’s life, even out of the classroom, the ache in my heart intensified.
Somehow, I served the kids supper and got them ready for bed. I smiled at them, kissed them goodnight, and sank back into my chair.
I was done. This was the end of the rope. And then my phone rang.
It was my friend Devoiry, her voice cheery and energetic.
“Chany! How about coming over to my house tonight? I heard a new comedy DVD was released, Miri and Shoshi are also coming.”
“Devoiry,” I replied slowly, through my haze of exhaustion. “You know I have a kabbalah not to watch DVDs.”
“Oh, come on, Chany. Just this once,” she cajoled.
For a split second, I entertained the idea of sitting with my friends, laughing away the day’s stress. But only for a second.
“No,” I whispered to Devoiry, a lump growing in my throat, and abruptly replaced the receiver.
The tears rushed out in a whoosh of release, like gas escaping a helium balloon.
I cried like I had never cried before, deep, wrenching sobs that came from somewhere deep within me, engulfing me completely.
I cried for my son who couldn’t read, couldn’t learn, couldn’t be like his peers.
I cried for the hours he spent with specialists and tutors, pushing himself to try despite his frustration.
I cried for his feeling of inferiority, of guilt, of fear. I cried for Chaim’s pain.
And I cried for my own pain, my frustration, the myriad appointments and tests I had accompanied Chaim to, the endless phone calls I had conducted on his behalf, my attempts to get him to talk about cheder and his reading difficulties, to no avail.
And I cried for the night of fun I had forfeited, on the day I needed it most.
“Hashem,” I screamed wordlessly. “You can do anything. Help my Chaim read. In the zechus of my kabbalah and my tefillos, please help Chaim read. He’s your son, too!”
to get out of bed, Rivki threw a tantrum because she couldn’t find the markers that she wanted to take to school, and the baby spit up just as the toaster pinged.
“Chaim,” I said tightly as he slowly came down the stairs, tracing the pattern on the railing. “Your bus will be here in five minutes. Hurry up.”
“It’s fine,” he replied sullenly. “I don’t care if I miss the bus. So I won’t do my stupid kriah practice again, so what?” He tried to sound indifferent, but his words stabbed my heart.
“Chaim, it’s the effort that counts, not the results,” I reminded him softly as I quickly plopped a sandwich in front of him and poured him a cup of juice.
“And besides, you’ll see, you’re going to learn how to read, B’ezras Hashem.” My voice was determined, edged by a new note of hope. I only hoped I wasn’t giving him false illusions.
The bus honked.
I waved goodbye with my heart in my throat.
An hour later, after I wiped down the table, made the beds, and put the baby for a nap, I finally sat down with a coffee.
I wrapped my hands around the mug, sipping slowly as thoughts of what I had to do whirled in my head.
Aah. I lifted the mug for another sip when the phone rang. I set the coffee on the table too quickly and it splattered, forming a little brown puddle of liquid on my previously gleaming table.
I grabbed a paper towel and checked the caller IDit was the cheder calling. My heart skipped a beat. I dropped the paper towel and quickly jammed the ‘talk’ button.
“Mommy?” Chaim’s voice was hesitant.
Chaim was calling from cheder? He never even wanted to talk about cheder.
“Yes, are you feeling good, tzaddik?” I asked in concern.
“Yeah. Mommy?”
It was quiet for a moment, and I squeezed the phone tightly in clammy hands.
“Mommy, I… I just read a word. Two letters, with nekudos.” His voice was wondering, cautious, eager. Like little buds poking their way through the barren earth.
I don’t know how long I sat there, tears wetting the table, face buried in my arms, body shaking soundlessly.
But at some point, the tears, salty at first, tasted of solace. Within the storm, I felt embraced. Comforted. Heard.
The next morning was a struggle. Chaim didn’t want
Everything faded around me. All I heard were Chaim’s words. “I read. Mommy, I read a word.”
After years of trying, hoping, and praying, my tears had finally tipped the glass.
And suddenly, there were tears in my eyes again. But this time, they were tears of gratitude and unbridled joy.
