KATZ
“I really don’t like this,” the pediatrician said, glancing up from his notes. “Chani lost ten pounds since she was here two weeks ago. That’s concerning enough for me to advise you to go to the emergency room.”
“But she’s getting over a virus,” I protested. “Isn’t it normal to lose some weight?”
“Yes, but this weight loss is too significant to ignore. And Chani looks pale and is still complaining of stomach pain. How long ago did this start?”
“Uh, at least two weeks ago,” I made a quick mental calculation. “Actually, just about three weeks ago.”
“Yes, I would definitely recommend taking Chani to the emergency room,” the doctor repeated.
On the way to the hospital, my thoughts vacillated between guilt and fear. I should have brought her back to the doctor sooner! What if it’s something terrible?
I shivered involuntarily and glanced over at Chani. Her wan, pale face twisted into a weak attempt at a smile, and I squeezed her hand with a reassurance I myself didn’t feel.
“It will be fine, Chani,” I tried for a comforting note, hoping she wouldn’t notice the slight wobble in my voice.
I had never imagined that what I thought was an innocent stomach virus was actually something far more sinister.
Chani got pricked way too many times in the ER. First they took blood to run some tests, then they put in an IV to give her fluids, as she was dehydrated. They took some more tests, and then we waited and waited.
Finally, a cheerful doctor came in. He had small round glasses that kept slipping down his nose, which I would have found quite comical had I not been so nervous.
“Mrs. Gross,” he said. My heart rate quickened.
“We have a suspicion of what the issue is. But we will need to do a specific test, called a capsule endoscopy, to verify if we are correct.” He proceeded to explain the test: they would give Chani a pill to swallow. Inside the pill would be a tiny camera, which would take pictures of her intestines.
After Chani underwent the procedure, the doctor came back.
“It’s confirmed,” he told us. My breath quickened, and my
“She’s only twelve! There’s no way she has such a severe illness!”
hands felt clammy.
“Chani has Crohn’s disease. Crohn's is a type of IBD, which is inflammatory bowel disease. Basically, Crohn’s causes inflammation in the digestive tract, which can lead to abdominal pain, fatigue, weight loss, malnutrition, and other symptoms. Unfortunately, there is no cure yet for Crohn’s. But there are many medications available to help reduce the inflammation, eliminate symptoms, and hopefully prevent long-term complications. Many people with Crohn’s go on to lead long and productive lives.”
I sucked in a deep breath as my mind went numb, and I tried valiantly to process what the doctor was saying. Crohn’s disease? Inflammation? No cure? Medications? What was he saying?
I felt like screaming. NO! Nooooooooooooooooooooooo!
You don’t understand! This is my Chani, my precious daughter, that we’re talking about! She’s only twelve! There’s no way she has such a severe illness! It just can’t be!
“Mrs. Gross?” The doctor peered at me. “Are you okay?”
“Y-yes,” I mumbled as my brain shouted NO! I AM NOT OKAY!
“Chani will be transferred to the pediatric ward. Once she is there, a doctor will come by to discuss treatment plans.”
Even though I felt like I was
falling apart, I realized that I needed to be strong, or at least put on an act, while Chani was here. After all, it was her life we were talking about! Her whole current and future life had just been turned upside down! I turned to Chani.
“Chani, I know this sounds very scary. But we have to remember that this is from the Bashefer. He created all illnesses, and He can create cures and heal people, even if doctors say there is no cure.”
I pulled her into a hug.
“Don’t worry, Chani. Everything will be okay. We’ll speak to the doctors, do some research, and soon enough you’ll be as good as new.”
The chizuk I gave Chani helped me also. But later, after we were settled in the colorful pediatric ward and Chani had dozed off, the shock of the diagnosis came back to haunt me, and my mind filled with what-if’s and then-what’s. How would this affect Chani? What about the rest of the family? What if the medication didn’t help for the symptoms? And even if everything was under control, it sounded like she would have to be on medication the rest of her life. This could have significant ramifications on her shidduchim!
Just then, a knock at the door interrupted my ruminations. The doctor was here. • TO BE CONTINUED

RECAP OF CHAPTER 42: Binyamin warns Naomi again not to speak about Eretz Yisrael at all, for fear that the Nazis will overhear and get angry at them all.
Naomi goes to Elky’s house to speak to her. Elky bursts out angrily about how she needs to stop wasting money.
From the siddur that Chani Klein prepared for herself at age twelve:
The boys sing in shul, and the girls next to the candles: Lecha Dodi likras kallah Pnei Shabbos nekablah
“Time and again, I’m amazed at the creativity!” Naomi laughed as she returned the siddur to her aunt/mother-in-law. Her mother-in-law smiled. “All the girls my age had such a siddur,” she said. “The idea, of course, was Babbe’s, she should be well. She announced a competition for ‘The Nicest Siddur,’ because lots of the girls our age didn’t really daven the whole tefillah. Siddurim were in shul, for the men, from the few things the Wangels were able to save from the Nazi plundering. And a few people had their own siddurim.”
“I heard about the competition,” Naomi said. “My mother told me about it. She also made a siddur, when she got older, but it was smaller, and not so fancy and decorated.”
“For the competition, Babbe worked to get us all kinds of materials to make the siddurim beautiful…” Chani got up and put the siddur lovingly in the cabinet. “I think she asked Wangel to get colored paper and stickers, and she paid for it with her
vouchers.”
“That’s not something that is usually done, right?”
“What, to ask the Nazis to buy us things? Usually it’s only for very urgent things, like medicines.”
“Oh.”
“You look very preoccupied, Naomi.”
“I guess I am. I’m trying to think what a girl my age could waste money on here, without anyone noticing from the outside.”
“What do you mean?” Chani got up to get the tray of fish from the small kitchen.
Naomi sighed. “I have problem, and I don’t know what I’m allowed to say and what not. I don’t want to tell my mother, because she’ll figure out right away who I’m talking about. So will Babbe, because she’s always been very involved in my friendships…”
“Do you want to tell me? Is it possible that I could help?”
“Could be,” Naomi said. She glanced at the candles flickering on the shelf across from them, and wondered if Elky had money this week to buy candles for Shabbos.
“So tell me without names and details.”
“I know someone…and from what I know about her, she shouldn’t be lacking money.”
Her mother-in-law nodded.
“But she is acting like she doesn’t have anything. We talked yesterday, and twice in the conversation I mentioned buying something. She burst out that she’s wasted tons of money

already, and now she can’t buy anything anymore.”
“Is she married?”
Naomi paused for a moment. “Yes.”
“Do you think they’re hungry for bread?”
“It looks like it.” Naomi sighed. “Binyamin came to tell me that he saw her husband collecting old bread that was sent to the animals in the kennels.”
“Oh my!” Chani gasped. “Sounds like the situation is really serious! And you didn’t see her wasting money recently? Special food? Fruits? Clothes from expensive fabrics?”
“Honestly, no, but that doesn’t really mean anything. Because I don’t see her so much.”
“Maybe expensive furnishings?”
“I have no clue. When I visited her, we stood at the door; I didn’t go inside her house.”
“Maybe you need to try and find out, carefully, from Grossman at the carpentry shop, if she ordered any special furnishings… What else could it be? Maybe she asked the Wangels to bring her something from the city?”
“That’s what I also thought. But what could it be? An electronic?”
“She wouldn’t be able to operate it here without the people who operate the generator noticing.”
“So maybe she’s paying them, too.”
“That’s strange.”
“That’s right, because this whole story is strange. And the strangest part about it is,” Naomi blurted out, “that it’s someone who has lots of money. She really does have a lot. Aside for her salary—which is pretty hefty—she has all kinds of…” She searched for the right words. “Income on the side.”
“Maybe they need special medication. What do you know? But there’s no way to find that out, because neither Dr. Katzburg or Babbe will tell you, of course.” Chani was quiet for a moment as she straightened the becher, moving it a millimeter this way and a millimeter that way. “Maybe you do need to take this story to Babbe, Naomi. It sounds to me like lashon hara l’to’eles. And if there’s someone who can help…”
“It’s Babbe,” her daughter-in-law concluded.
“And if, of course, there’s any need for practical help, even in the meantime, until Babbe finds out what’s going on
there, you can come to me. I can help with food—Wangel sometimes lets me take some extra products. I don’t usually ask, certainly not for us. But it has happened that I asked for a certain needy family, and Katarina had no problem with me taking.”
The boys came in with a loud, “Gut Shabbos!” and the elusive thought of, What does Elky’s Shabbos table look like? flashed through Naomi’s mind before it was replaced by the shouts of Meir and Eli, Aryeh’s younger brothers: “Mottel fainted!”
“Which Mottel?” Chani asked her husband, Yiddel.
“Mottel Kush,” he answered. Aryeh stood beside his father, his gaze lowered as he stared at his Shabbos shoes, which Naomi had greased to a shine that afternoon.
Naomi glanced at her mother-in-law, her mouth opening and then closing. Was there any connection here?
Based on what Binyamin had related, there certainly was.
“Did they take him to the infirmary? Is my mother there?” Chani asked. “In other words—should I run to call my father to eat the seudah with us?”
“No,” Yiddel answered tersely. “He woke up after a few seconds and insisted that everything was fine.”
“It sounds exactly like what Binyamin had…” Chani murmured. “What’s going on here lately? We finally finished that outbreak of flu and pneumonia, baruch Hashem… Has he also been working too hard?”
Aryeh shrugged, and his father shook his head. “I have no idea,” he said. “Hashem should help him feel better quickly. His father and father-in-law walked him home.”
“I hope that’s responsible.”
“So do I,” her husband said. “But Mottel Kush is an adult, and we can’t force him to do anything he doesn’t want to.” He began to sing, and his boys joined him. Chani was very quiet throughout the meal, and only at the end, as Naomi cleaned the tablecloth, did she call her over to the side.
“Can you take a tray of food over to the Kush family? Maybe they bought medicines for his illness with their money, and they don’t have anything left for food or much else.”
“So why don’t they go eat at their

parents’?” Naomi asked. Then, realizing how awful that sounded, she quickly said, “Sorry, I didn’t mean that we come here to save money.”
“You come here to give us nachas,” Chani hushed her, and pulled a wooden tray out of the bottom shelf of the cabinet. “Let’s not ask needless questions. This story doesn’t sound good, and we’re going to try to see what we can do.”
She piled two slices of lamb meat, a small challah, some pieces of herring, and some cooked zucchini onto the tray. “Aryeh will wait for you here,” she said. “You’re okay with going, right?”
“Sure,” Naomi murmured, even though going over to Elky now and appearing like the nosiest person in the world was the last thing she felt like doing. But like a good daughterin-law, she put on her coat, took the tray, and left.
A few snowflakes meandered in the air in the mild wind, and Naomi hoped that if a snowstorm was on the way, it wouldn’t start soon. She drew close to Elky’s house. In the dimly lit doorway, she could see the shadow of Mrs. Kush, Elky’s mother-in-law.
“He should rest a lot,” she advised. Naomi froze for a moment and then hurriedly moved behind the nearby tree trunk. To someone who didn’t understand, her action would seem strange. Why should someone who felt ill suddenly on a Friday night need to get basic food for Shabbos?
Fruit, special tea, a homemade remedy, or even cake was understandable. But the couple should, ostensibly, not be lacking for food.
She had no strength for questions and surprises, and the tree was the perfect refuge. It also protected her from the snowflakes that were growing heavier now. Her motherin-law was probably regretting sending her. It was alright; when Mrs. Kush would leave, she’d approach, knock, give the tray to Elky, and go back.
It took almost five more minutes.
“Naomi!” Elky opened the door.
“I came to say good Shabbos.” Naomi proffered the tray. “And…Shabbos hi milizok u’refuah kerovah lavo.”
“Amen.” Elky’s face was turned to the side. “Everything is fine, baruch Hashem. He just suddenly felt weak.”
“Elky.” Suddenly, Naomi felt this urge to just say it straight out. “If…you don’t have enough money to buy food, there are people who can help.” Without looking around much, she could see that the house was furnished very similar to hers. There was nothing luxurious in the big room.
“No, it’s fine,” Elky said flatly, taking the tray. “Tell your mother-in-law thank you very much.”
“How do you know it’s from her?”
“Because you can’t send food like this to other people on a preschool teacher’s salary,” Elky said with the hint of a smile.
“And what can you do with the salary of an office worker?”
Naomi stared at her directly.
“The doors and windows have to be closed soon, so the Shabbos candles can’t be seen,” Elky said, leaning on the doorpost. Maybe she was also dizzy, and was about to faint?
“So you should hurry now, Naomi, before you get stuck outside in the snow. But really…thanks for bring this to us. It smells great.”

QI have been on many diets in my life and every single diet made me cut out challah on Shabbos and have a matzah instead. To me, this is the hardest part of losing weight and I would love to know if you can explain why dieticians and nutritionists make their clients have a board of matzah on Shabbos.
AI love your question. Such a real and fair one! From my personal and professional experience, I will answer your question in one sentence. The short answer is that when one starts with challah, it is hard to stop.
Now here is the longer version to my answer: If you read my articles for long enough now, I think that you can attest, that I never call foods good or bad. (Yes, sugar is almost always referred to as the devil, but that’s about it!) Challah is incredible. Sourdough is even better. It is warm, fluffy, filling and just plain enticing. And then come the dips. Oh, the dips. Every single dip is incredible. Almost every single dip is fattening. Once you start, it is hard to draw the line. A matzah on the other hand is a thin square board, made just with flour and water. A matzah is sectioned, portioned, and controlled. When you finish that one board of 120 calories, you are done! You absolutely cannot say the same for challah.
At BeneFIT Health, I really aim to give my clients the full gamut of the Shabbos experience, and still achieve weight loss after three meals. The buck has to
stop somewhere... Allowing my clients to have challah, and dips, and dips and challah (or reverse the order!) will never allow them to reach their goals. Washing three times on Shabbos is a must. Eating machalie Shabbos, is a must. So, what can one cut out to achieve weight loss? Perhaps the challah! There is nothing wrong with challah, other than the fact that this incredibly tasting food is high in carbs and will not allow you to reach the success you are seeking, therefor, matzah is a great solution. I also advise my clients to purchase the Royo bagels or the Royo challah rolls if a matzah won’t do the job for them. (Keep in mind that a Royo roll has 3.5 grams of fat, so having it three times a Shabbos might be a bit much for weight loss.) Rewarm it in your oven before Shabbos so that it is warm and crunchy. For anyone trying to maintain their weight, go right ahead and enjoy your challah!
Think about how many times you washed and bentched this yom tov season and how you felt…. I think you will gravitate to the matzah and truly enjoy all your Shabbos fish, meats, salads and sides instead.
WEIGHT LOSS IS A JOURNEY THAT NEEDS TO BE UNDERSTOOD. THERE IS NO ONE SIZE FITS ALL APPROACH. YOU DON'T HAVE TO NAVIGATE THIS INTRICATE JOURNEY ON OUR OWN. JOIN THE BENEFIT HEALTH MOVEMENT AND GET THE SUPPORT YOUR MIND AND BODY NEEDS.

The words of Davening and learning Torah create a protective Teivah from the world’s challenges.
Taking a trip in a giant submarine. You are standing in the cockpit in front of a large glass window, where you can see the ocean’s vastness teeming with all types of fish swimming past: big, small, colorful, and even spiky. There are beautiful sea plants, including sea anemones and coral. Suddenly, an enormous shark comes your way. It has hundreds of teeth and looks quite scary. But you aren’t afraid because the shark can’t touch or hurt you. Even though it sees you, and the shark may think you would make a very tasty meal, the shark can’t harm you since you are inside the submarine, surrounded by its solid walls.
What is one way to improve the way you Daven?
In our Parsha, Noach builds a Teivah to protect himself from the waters of the Mabul. Today we don’t have to build a physical Teivah because there is no Mabul that threatens us physically. There is a spiritual Mabul, the challenges of the world that can surround and even drown us. These challenges refer to any obstacles that distract us from serving Hashem and convince us that the world around us exists for itself. For example, if your mother needs your help but you want to finish reading your book, the book is distracting you from doing the mitzvah of honoring your mother. To protect ourselves from this flood of distractions we need to build a spiritual Teivah. Our Teivah consists of the words of Torah and Tefillah (in Hebrew, “Teivah” also means “word”.) Connecting to Hashem through these words, instills within us the knowledge that Torah and Mitzvos are the true reason for the existence of the world. Everything else only exists to be used for the purpose of fulfilling this intent. Immersing ourselves in the words of Torah and Tefilla therefore strengthens our Neshama, protecting it from the Mabul “waters.”
Draw a Teivah on a piece of paper, cut it out, and stick it to the back of the plate .
On a second plate, use a popsicle stick to pour the light blue glue, to create streaks of blue.
Cut a long piece of ribbon (approximately 12 inches) and glue each end in between both plates.
Turn over the plate, and with the black glitter glue trace, and fill in the Teivah. Let it set for approximately 45 minutes.
Take the purple and dark blue glue and mix them together slowly to create a marbled, multi-colored effect.
Now, you can hang your suncatcher in the window and watch your Mabul art sparkle!
In three small cups pour 1 tbsp of clear glue. The first, add one drop of blue dye and the second add one drop of purple dye. For the third, take a small amount of blue glue and mix it in, creating light blue. Mix well.
Sprinkle a small amount of blue and purple glitter onto the glue, then allow the plate to dry for 24 hours.
Food Coloring: Blue and Purple
Glitter: Blue and Purple
2 Clear Plastic Plates
Black Glitter Glue
3 Popsicle Sticks
3 Small Cups
Clear Glue Scissors Ribbon Tape
