RECIPE BY FAIGY MURRAY | YIELDS: 8 SERVINGS
1. Dissolve the coffee granules in boiling water; set aside for a few minutes to cool.
2. Add 2/3 cup vanilla crumbs to the coffee; mix to incorporate.
3. Immediately remove the crumbs from the coffee using a slotted spoon or strainer. (Crumbs will be a little soggy.) Place crumbs on the bottom of the pie crust and gently spread them out to cover.
4. In a small bowl, combine pudding mix with milk and mix until thick. Pour pudding on top of crumbs in pie crust.
5. Sprinkle ¹/3 cup vanilla crumbs over the chocolate pudding.
6. Using an electric mixer, beat the whip until stiff peaks form. Spread on top of pie.
7. Sprinkle whipped cream with remaining vanilla crumbs and chocolate crumbs. Freeze until firm.
8. Remove from freezer about 10 minutes before serving to thaw slightly.

Servings: 2-3
Ingredients:
1 rack of beef ribs
Olive oil (e.g., Clos Mesorah) 2-3 tbsp Pinch Boss Brisket Rub 1 cup BBQ sauce (choose your favorite brand)
1 cup water + 1 cup wine (optional), or 2 cups water
Directions:
1. Preheat the Oven: Set your oven to 350°F (175°C).
2. Prepare the Ribs: Drizzle olive oil over the ribs, massaging it into the meat. Rub generously with the Pinch Boss Brisket Rub, making sure the ribs are heavily and evenly coated.
3. Initial Roast: Place the ribs in a roasting pan, uncovered, and bake for 30 minutes until they develop a caramelized crust.
4. Add Moisture: Remove the pan from the oven. Add 2 cups of liquid (water and wine, or just water) to the bottom of the pan. Cover the pan tightly with aluminum foil to lock in the moisture.
5. Slow Cook: Return the ribs to the oven, covered, and bake for 3 hours until the ribs are tender and soft.
6. Glaze the Ribs: Remove the foil and brush the ribs generously with BBQ sauce. Place them back in the oven, uncovered, for an additional 10-15 minutes. This will allow the sauce to thicken and become sticky.
7. Final Touch: Once the ribs are nicely glazed and heated through, remove from the oven. Let them rest for a few minutes before serving.
8. Serving Options: Serve immediately, or refrigerate and reheat for 30 - 40 minutes just before your Yom Tov meal.
9. Pairing Suggestion: These ribs are perfect alongside garlic roasted broccolini and sweet potato mash.

RECAP OF CHAPTER 41: Wangel receives a compliment-filled letter from a satisfied customer, and he rewards the factory workers for it. Since Binyamin did the finishing work on that coat, Wangel rewards him with daily paid breaks.
On one of those breaks, Binyamin walks near the fox kennels and notices Mottel Kush picking up old bread that the animals didn’t want to eat. Horrified, he runs to Naomi and tells her she must take care of finding out what’s going on with the Kushes, right away.
Beneath the letters on the wall was a drawing of a child wearing a yarmulke, sitting and reading a book. Binyamin stared unseeingly at the drawing. “The idea to break into their house isn’t all that bad…” he said.
“Not bad.” Naomi’s lips curled cynically. “And can you lower your voice a little, Binyamin? There are children here, and as young as they are, their ears are huge. Anyway, like I said, bli neder I’ll run over to her after work today, okay? I can’t imagine there’s too much time left to your break now, in any case.”
“Fine.” Binyamin gave in. “So, what will you tell her when you go?”
“I don’t know—whatever Hashem puts in my mouth.”
“Okay, fine. Good luck. This picture is nice, by the way.”
“One of the mothers came and drew it.” Naomi nodded. The children were frolicking around them with mounting energy, and Binyamin glanced over at them and then sighed.
“It hurts me to think about what will be with the bigger kids here in a few months. I just saw the ones who are taking care of the lambs and the foxes. Believe me, they are babies, literally… When are they supposed to have time to learn to read from a siddur?”
“I try to teach them kriah now. When did you learn, when you were their age?”
“Zeide sat and taught me.”
“Bilhah also taught us a bit, I remember.”
“Mostly the ABCs. The aleph-beis? It’s up to the fathers to teach their kids,” he said. “The ones whose fathers sit and learn with them know how to read Hebrew, and the rest…” He fell silent, because his brother-in-law Aryeh’s father did teach his son, yet Aryeh still didn’t really know how to read. Although he knew more today, thanks to his wife.
Naomi also ignored the sensitive point. “I also think about that—what the kids will learn in the small amount of time they have with me here,” she said. “I tell them the parshah and try to introduce them to the midrashim of Chazal. But more than that?
How will they leave from here?”
“Right. That’s what I was thinking about when I saw the children with the sheep and the foxes.” His eyes studied the walls. “Baruch Hashem, I had someone to teach me, for years. But there are many who don’t have that.”
“Not to mention those from families that aren’t religious.”
“That’s another point. But I’m talking about our children…you had to see how some of the little ones, kids whom I know from shul on Shabbos, run around there. Their fathers can’t teach them, and they are growing up literally like wild foxes themselves…”
“So maybe that’s why you got your break.”
“What, so that I should teach them?”
She nodded. “It’s an idea, isn’t it? I started to say something when you told me about your break. The truth is, I wanted to
suggest that you come here regularly to teach the boys a little. But maybe it’s better that you should work with the older ones. They’re also closer to the factory.”
“I don’t know.” He seemed thrown off by the idea. “I have to think what to do and how. There are initiatives that are not exactly welcome here.”
“I see that you are looking at the walls. Are you looking for something specific?”
“I’m looking for something that I hope isn’t there.”
“What is that?” She felt a frisson of tension.
“Pesukim about Eretz Ysirael. Drawings. A map of the Land.” He grew serious. “Yesterday we got to talking about Kush, but I hope you remember the other subject.”
“The notebook.”
“Yes. There’s nothing here that can make them suspect you of Zionism, right?” “Really, Binyamin!”
“Really, I’m serious, Naomi. You have to understand that the Nazis don’t differentiate between that kind of Zionism and the natural desire of every Jew to go to Eretz Yisrael when Mashiach comes, b’ezras Hashem. There are things that they won’t tolerate.
I asked around some of the older people. Wangel and Heidrich— the old ones—were very angry in the past when the Reform did something in memory of Herzl. Yosef Posen told me that they threatened then that if such a thing ever happens again, they’ll send us all away from here, and make sure that the celebrating group is sent to the biggest concentration camp in Palestine.”
“It still exists?”
“Well, this happened about thirty years ago. There was a camp in Yerushalayim—”
“Yes, I once read an article about the concentration camps around the world, in one of the newspapers they brought us… It’s an evil that I can’t define in words at all, to build the biggest concentration camp specifically in the city holiest to the Jews…” “Anyway, that camp doesn’t exist anymore, unfortunately. There aren’t any Jews in the whole Middle East.” He shrugged. “Officially.” “Officially?”
“Maybe there are other places where a few survivors are kept hidden.” He walked toward the door. “Naomi, remember to work carefully, okay? Eretz Yisrael is out of bounds, not dreams, not stories. Learning about Yiddishkeit, yes, but nothing that expresses a yearning to leave this place in favor of a better place.”
“Elky?” her mother asked before they parted at the fork in the path, where each one would turn toward her own house. “Is everything okay with you lately?”
“Yes, sure.” She smiled, snuggling further into her scarf.
“You don’t look so good, forgive me for saying.”
“Me?” Elky’s surprise was obvious. “Why?”
Her mother retreated. “Whatever,” she said. “I’ve been thinking about you a lot these past few days. And about the fact that you don’t want to come to us for Shabbos… How are you doing with the cooking? Managing?”
“Yes, great.” She smiled wider. “Today I’m making patties.”
“Sounds good! Can you bring me some to taste?”
“I don’t know if there will be any left…” Elky’s face closed.
“Really, Elky, you make me laugh!” Her mother looked at her. “Do you think I want you to bring me food? On the contrary, I keep inviting you to us!”
“Okay, okay.” Her daughter’s face softened, and she waved to her mother as they parted.
Rochel Cohen continued walking on the muddy path, not knowing what to think. Something about Elky didn’t look right lately, and Shmelke had also been telling her that Mottel seemed a little withdrawn, not talking much. Were they angry about something?
“Hi, Mrs. Cohen!” she heard a voice say, and only then did Rochel notice Naomi, formerly Schvirtz, standing right near her.
“Oh, Naomi, hello!” she said, trying to smile at her daughter’s friend. Was that status also ‘formerly’? “How are you? What are you doing here?”
“I came,” Naomi paused for a moment, an uneasy look in her eyes, “to ask Elky something. I hope she’s home.”
“She should be getting home in a few minutes. We just parted. How is work at the preschool?”
“Baruch Hashem, very good.”
“We hear lots of good things about you.”
“Thank you.”
“Are you…” It was Rochel’s turn to hesitate for a moment. “Are you…still in touch with Elky? I never asked her, but I haven’t heard anything about you lately ”
“Not so much,” Naomi said quietly. “Not since we went our separate ways for our jobs…”
“Your mother and I are still such good friends, even though we
hardly have time to schmooze.”
“But you see each other almost every day during lunch. Elky and I don’t have that.”
“True,” Rochel conceded. “Still, I would be so happy if the connection between you could continue, like it was before ”
“So would I,” Naomi said candidly. “But I think that even if we would meet every day, it still wouldn’t be so simple. Elky…she’s changed a bit.”
“It’s natural that marriage changes a person!” Rochel hurriedly defended her daughter.
“That’s right, of course,” Naomi said, chiding herself. Why had she said that? “Look, you see I’m going over to her now.” She forced herself to smile. Mrs. Cohen was also probably in a hurry to end this rather awkward encounter, so she bid the older woman a good day and walked on.
The hut of the young Kush family was just a small distance ahead. Naomi studied it for a moment from the outside and then walked up to the door. It opened even before she got to it.
“Naomi?” Elky was standing in the doorway, holding a metal bowl. She reached for the doorknob and shut the door behind her. “What did I do to deserve this visit from you?” The words could have had a friendly tone or a cynical one; Naomi preferred to hear only the former.
“I wanted to ask you for the recipe for the kugel you once made, before we got married. Remember, when we were fifteen, we made Shabbos together in my house?” “The potato kugel?” “Yes.”
Elky walked over to the rectangle of earth that Naomi was standing near, and put the bowl on the ground. She bent down, and with her bare hands, began to dig in the frozen ground.
“What’s the matter, Elky? You don’t have a hoe?” Naomi automatically bent down to help her friend. “What did you plant here?”
Elky didn’t answer at first. “We had a great hoe,” she muttered suddenly, “but it belonged to my husband’s parents, and they needed it back.”
“I admire every woman who is able to grow vegetables in her own little yard,” Naomi said sincerely. “I haven’t tried it yet myself. And honestly? I didn’t think that you’d be one of those who do this, in addition to all the other things that need to get done! But if you are doing it, buy a normal hoe. The store carries them, behind the door—did you forget already?” She chuckled with nostalgia for those carefree days when she and Elky had spent endless hours in the store in deep conversation, about matters that teenagers deemed so important. “Don’t you remember that we said that a hoe could be a parable for—”
Elky pulled a small, green orb from the ground and stared at it with frustration. “What is that?” Naomi asked quietly.
“It was supposed to be a potato. I wanted to make that kugel, actually,” Elky muttered, groping around in the ground with her red fingers. The orb itself began to roll, stopping near the metal bowl.
“It looks like it is a potato.” Naomi studied it. “But it needs to grow some more.”
“I thought I’d make kugel from it. Well, it’s not necessary; we’ll manage without the kugel.” Her eyes were dark as she picked up the bowl.
“When did you plant it?”
“I don’t remember. A few days ago, maybe a week or two.”
“But plants need time to grow! Wait patiently, Elky, and in the meantime, you can buy potatoes in the store. They happen to be very cheap now. When the stock in the storage rooms gets used up, the price will go up, especially if it snows and people won’t be able to buy even from the private people who grow them.”
Elky didn’t reply. And then she suddenly burst out angrily, “It’s impossible to keep buying all the time! You have no idea how much money I’ve already wasted since we got married. I can’t allow myself to get to the point where we won’t have anything left!”
Naomi gaped at her.

Q: What can I do to help my teenager succeed? Is there something I can teach her or something that she can read? I just feel like we teach so many things in school, but life skills isn’t one of them.
A: Sean Covey, the son of Stephen Covey who wrote The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, followed up his father’s book with one specifically targeted at teenagers. The book is a great resource for teenagers – and for parents of teenagers who want to help their teenagers develop and grow into healthy, happy adults. What are those seven habits that Covey recommends for teens? I’ve outlined the first five below:
#1: Be Proactive. It’s easy to blame others and to react to negative situations. Someone gets angry at you, you yell at them. You are hungry, you quickly shovel food into your mouth. You get a bad grade on a test, you say that it’s all the teacher’s fault. Instead of reacting to what life throws your way, the idea is to be proactive and take responsibility for your life.
How do you make this a habit? This is the part that takes work. You need to think about what your values you are and then systematically make decisions based on your values. For every issue that arises, you come up with multiple solutions instead of concluding, “There’s nothing I can do.” And, with each choice to be proactive, instead of reactive, you
are ingraining the habit so that it will be easier the next time.
#2: Begin with the End in Mind. What if you never think about tomorrow? What if you start things will no plans to finish them? What if you live in the moment and never think about the consequences of your actions on your future? Life might be great today, but tomorrow will likely be much more difficult. Instead, start with a goal in mind, and work toward that goal.
How do you make this a habit? The first step is to write down your goals, both short-terms and long-term. Then, you can make a plan to get to those goals. In addition, it helps to constantly think about times when your actions and values clashed. If you really value a certain goal, but don’t act in a way that is consistent with gaining that goal, what made you act that way? Figuring out those gaps will help you act with your goals in mind in the future.
#3: Put First Things First. Who doesn’t love to procrastinate? It’s much easier to do something fun than to sit down and do what you’ve got to do. But establishing what our priorities are can then help us fight that procrastination and accomplish our goals.
How do you make this a habit? Mark Twain famously said that you should “Eat your frogs first.” In other words, if you have to eat a frog at some point over the course of the day, you
IF THEY DON'T LEARN THE WAY WE TEACH, WE MUST TEACH THEM THE WAY THEY LEARN
Rifka Schonfeld, Director
should just get it over with in the morning so that you don’t have to stare at it all day. The same goes with your priorities. Take care of the first ones first – and understanding what they are is the first step towards this habit.
#4: Think Win-Win. Is everything a competition? Is it always you vs. them? Or me vs. him? If it looks like you are going to lose, do you intentionally make others lose as well? A highly effective person needs to readjust his focus to see the world as a me and him and not a me vs. him situation. In other words, you can both win.
How do you make this a habit? When you catch yourself comparing or competing, take a step back. Don’t tie your self worth to winning or being above somebody else. Rather, get celebrate the successes of others. Place yourself in their shoes and revel in their achievements.
#5: Seek First to Understand, then to Be Understood. It’s easy to talk and talk and never listen. It makes sense to always want to tell your side of the story first. Why listen to other people’s opinions if you already know so clearly what yours are? The truth is that if you learn how to genuinely listen, people will learn how to talk to you. When you have honest and real conversations with other people, you can develop strong friendships and connections – and ultimately be very effective.

Pathways
Along with crisp leaves and cold weather come typical childhood ailments and winter illnesses. As the thermostat drops, children spend more time with each other in enclosed areas, sharing their chips, toys and germs. Illness is all but inevitable. The question is how often, how seriously, and for how long a child will suffer. Valid questions. ImmuniKidTM is a key part of the answer in keeping kids healthy.
Zahler’s ImmuniKidTM, is more than just another immune booster. The careful balance of quality ingredients, easy dispensing, great taste and cost-effective results makes this dietary supplement an instant winner.

Fortunately, there is a smart and easy way of supporting immunity with ImmuniKidTM from Advanced Nutrition by Zahler. ImmuniKidTM is a powerful dietary supplement designed with the kid in mind, boosting immunity all year round. It includes a carefully curated blend of well-researched vitamins and nutrients and supports a speedy immune system response and general wellness.

4. Add the wine and deglaze the pot. Cook for another 3 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool.
5. Assembly: Preheat your oven to 375° and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
6. Place a tablespoon of the mushroom filling into the center of a puff pastry square. Fold the puff pastry in half, pinching the edges to seal completely. Place on the baking sheet and brush with egg wash. Sprinkle with sesame seeds or everything bagel seasoning.
7. Bake for 20-23 minutes, until golden brown. Serve warm with mushroom sauce on top.
TIP: These freeze great, stored in a sealed pan, ziploc bag, or airtight container.
Using the new Passion Root chunky cherry jam takes these already-delicious kugelettes to a whole new level. If you’re short on time, feel free to omit the crunch topping.
Yield: 20 kugelettes or (1) 9x13 pan
Ingredients:
Kugel:
1 pack medium kugel noodles, cooked according to package instructions
5 eggs
¾ cup oil
3-4 tablespoons Passion Root brand cherry jam
4 tablespoons dark brown sugar
1 tablespoon vanilla sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
½ teaspoon salt
Crunch Topping:
¼ cup rice crispies, crushed
¼ stick margarine
1 cup ground nuts
¼ cup dark brown sugar
Directions:
1. Preheat your oven to 375° and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
2. Crunch Topping: In a large bowl, toss all the ingredients for the crunch topping and spread in an even layer on the baking sheet. Bake for 4-5 minutes until margarine pieces have melted. Stir to combine and set aside.
3. Kugel: In a large bowl, add in all the ingredients for the kugel and mix with a fork until fully combined. Make sure no clumps of the brown sugar remain.
4. Line 20 cupcake tins with foil cupcake liners. Grease them well with cooking spray (if using a 9x13 pan, simply line with parchment paper). Evenly pour the kugel mixture into the cupcake tins or pan, until just about full. Sprinkle the crunch topping on top.
5. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until golden brown.
Serving Suggestion: Spoon a dollop of cherry jam on top. Garnish with fresh mint leaves.
We don’t dabble—we dominate. We source the purest raw materials from around the globe, holding ourselves to standards that blow past CGMP (Current Good Manufacturing Practices). Our obsession with precision means “good enough” isn’t even in the conversation.
Our processes? Few have seen, even fewer have mastered. Every nutrient is handpicked to not just make it into your bottle—but into your bloodstream—where it sparks real, lasting change. We set the bar. Want results? We engineer them. This isn’t just about your body feeling better—it’s about thriving. This is mastery, and we’re unapologetically at the helm.

AQI know that you typically answer nutrition questions but this topic piqued my interest and I am wondering what your take is: I noticed a funny trend every time I fly. I either lose or gain weight. What is the connection between flying and weight fluctuations? Is there anything I can do to avoid this?
Flying can be an exciting experience, but it often comes with a few physical side effects that can leave us puzzled. Whether it’s feeling bloated, retaining water, or even noticing a slight weight change after a flight, these experiences are quite common. Understanding the science behind these changes can help us better prepare for our next journey.
Does Flying Make You Gain Weight? The short answer is no; flying itself does not make you gain weight in terms of fat accumulation. However, you might feel heavier or notice a slight increase on the scale after a flight. This is primarily due to fluid retention and bloating rather than actual weight gain. When you’re flying, your body is exposed to lower cabin pressure and reduced oxygen levels. This environment can cause your body to retain more water, leading to bloating. Here’s how it works:
1. Cabin pressure and circulation: At high altitudes, the air pressure in the cabin is lower than what your body is used to at sea level. This decrease in pressure can cause blood to pool in your lower extremities, leading to swollen feet and ankles. When blood flow slows down, it can cause fluid to leak from your veins into the surrounding tissues, resulting in water retention.
2. Dehydration: Airplane cabins have low humidity levels, which can dehydrate your body. When you’re dehydrated, your body tends to hold on to the water it has, which can lead to bloating. Ironically, this water retention can make you feel heavier, even though your body might actually be losing water overall.
3. Gas Expansion: The low pressure in the cabin can also cause the gases in your stomach and intestines to expand. This is why you might feel bloated during or after a flight. The body’s natural response to the expansion of these gases is to make you feel uncomfortable, adding to that bloated sensation.
Interestingly, while some people feel bloated and heavier after a flight, others might feel lighter or even notice a slight drop in weight.
This sensation can be attributed to a few factors:
1. Dehydration leading to weight loss: As mentioned earlier, the low humidity in the cabin can cause dehydration. If you don’t drink enough water during your flight, your body may lose water weight, leading to a temporary drop on the scale.
2. Changes in diet and routine: During a flight, your eating and drinking habits may differ from your normal routine. You might eat less due to the lack of appetite caused by the pressurized environment, or you might skip meals altogether. In the days leading up to your trip you might have also eaten less as you might have wanted to be fit for your trip. This change in your intake can contribute to a feeling of lightness or even a temporary weight loss.
If you’re concerned about feeling bloated or retaining water during your next flight, here are some tips to help manage these symptoms:
1) Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water before, during, and after your flight to combat dehydration. Avoid alcohol and caffeine, as these can further dehydrate you.
2) Move around: Take short walks around the cabin or do simple leg exercises to keep your blood circulating and reduce the risk of swelling.
3) Wear compression socks: These can help prevent swelling by improving circulation in your legs.
4) Watch your diet: Avoid salty snacks and meals before and during your flight, as sodium can increase water retention. Also, sitting on a flight for many hours can lead to boredom and boredom can lead to snacking mindlessly, which can lead to a gain.
5) Dress Comfortably: Wear loose-fitting clothes to reduce the pressure on your abdomen and promote better circulation.
6) Be patient! Within a day after flying, you will be back to yourself. Give your body the chance to naturally reach its happy and healthy place and reduce the water retention at its own pace!

The Mitzvah of Lulav and Esrog teaches us the importance of every Jew, regardless of their level of observance. If we are missing even one person, we are not fully complete.
You are playing chess with your sibling one afternoon. You begin to set up the pieces on the board: the King, the Queen, the Rooks, Bishops, Knights, and Pawns.
As you are about to finish, you realize you are missing one of the white Pawns. Oh no! Maybe you could still attempt to play… but it won’t be fair or the same if you do. Even though the Pawn is only one piece, and perhaps the simplest, you realize it serves an important role in the game.
Think of someone different from you in the area of Yiddishkeit. What is one thing you can learn from them?
People come in all different shapes and sizes. Some excel at learning, others at davening, and others at helping their parents, friends, or siblings. Some seem to excel in all of the above, but some don’t seem to be great at any particular mitzvah. We may be led to think that such a person is not as necessary as the others, or that being great in one area of Torah and mitzvos is the most important of all (Shemos Rabba 40:3). But the mitzvah of lulav and esrog teaches us that every single type of Jew has a role to play. Each one of us is necessary and important. Each one of the types in the Daled Minim set represents a different type of Jew, and if even one of them is missing, we can’t perform the mitzvah. Similarly, if even one Jew is missing, we are not whole. We cannot become our best selves without the help and influence of others.
Measure and pour 2oz. of glue, into a large container.
Measure 4oz. of shaving cream into the small container and carefully pour it into the large container.
When you think it’s ready, you can take the slime out of the container and start kneading.
Add one drop of yellow coloring and one drop of lemon scent.
Add 1 tablespoon of contact lens solution into the large container and mix slowly with a popsicle stick.
Stretch, pop, and squeeze your Esrog Slime!
Mix the glue, coloring, and scent well.
Once it’s mostly mixed, add a little gold glitter to the slime and start incorporating it.
