ESTHER RAPAPORT
NINE A.M. IS A COMPLETELY FICTIONAL STORY WHICH TAKES PLACE FIFTY YEARS AFTER THE HOLOCAUST.
RECAP OF CHAPTER 40: Naomi is slowly teaching Aryeh how to read.
Binyamin warns Naomi to destroy the kids’ book about life in Eretz Yisrael, before the Nazis discover it. He also tells her how gaunt Mottel Kush looks and asks Naomi to find out from Elky whether the couple is experiencing financial problems or anything of the sort.
CHAPTER FORTY ONE
To the honorable Mr. Josef Wangel, About half a year ago, I purchased a fur coat produced by your factory, ahead of a trip to London. It should be noted that throughout my stay there, I received countless compliments on the coat, which is unmatched in beauty and quality, and especially for its elegant finishing touches. I wish to offer you my blessings for this. I told all my acquaintances, both in London and in Austria, where I purchased the coat, and how satisfied I am with your exceptional work. There is no doubt that many years of family knowledge cannot be disputed.
Of course, going forward, I will purchase such items only from your unique factory.
Signed,
Victor Nissel, Head of the Social Democratic Party, Austria!
The workers in the office read the letter with interest, smiled, as was expected of them, and complimented the Hauptmann standing at the door—also as was expected of them, even though the “family knowledge” mentioned in the letter was more their own than that of the Hauptmann, who was nevertheless glowing proudly and with satisfaction.
“I think all the factory workers will get a nice bonus for this,” he said. “I hope I’ll be able to get this letter published in the media. A bit of popularity among consumers won’t hurt us now. As you
know,” he scowled suddenly, “people turned against us when we chased away curious eclipse tourists from the hillsides. And because neither I, nor you, want our sales to decline, we should all be working full force to ensure that such letters become a matter of course.”
He pointed to the letter. “This will hang here on the wall,” he noted, “so that everyone should remember what kind of output you are able to reach. Now, I want the young man Schvirtz here.”
“Can I ask why?” Leo Sherer asked submissively, but not before he motioned to one of the office boys to go call Binyamin from the factory.
“Nissel’s coat was a private custom order, and Binyamin is the one who did the finishing work on it. I assume that is one of the things that made it such a quality garment.” Wangel stopped, leaving no place for any more questions.
Binyamin arrived a few moments later, pale and confused. Wangel’s broad smile did little to calm him; if anything, it scared him even more. “Yes, Herr Wangel?” he said quietly. “I understand you called for me.”
“That’s right,” the Nazi said. He pointed to the letter still lying on Leo’s desk. “Read this, please.”
Binyamin walked over and silently read the words. Then he nodded and raised his head. “I’m glad that he liked it so much,” he said.
“I would like to reward you.” Wangel did not think about the ears all around them, listening closely. “Aside for the royalties that all the workers of the factory—including you—will get, I want to raise your salary by five marks a month and, if you want, to give you

a short break every day on work time. I understand you haven’t been so well recently.” Again, he smiled his dry smile. “And we need you at your best.”
“I thank the Hauptmann for all these privileges,” Binyamin replied solemnly. “They really make me very happy.”
“What about them makes you happy?” the other man probed. “The breaks.”
“The breaks? You’re really so exhausted?”
“I’m recovering, thank G-d,” Binyamin whispered. “But sometimes, I want a bit…of time to myself.”
“To yourself. And what will you do with that time?” Wangel’s eyebrows were knitted together.
“I’ll walk around outside a bit, breathe some fresh air.”
“Highly recommended, to be sure. What else?”
Binyamin thought it over for a moment. They might come and check what he was doing during his breaks. “I’d like to read the Talmud,” he admitted truthfully.
“Talmud.”
“Yes.” He took a deep breath. “The Torah that the Creator gave us is a wondrous thing, and it also adds wisdom to those who study it.”
“If so, I’m in favor.” Wangel laughed. “Okay, you can go. It’s now 3:25; be back at work by the four o’clock bell. But if these breaks will negatively affect your output quota, then the privilege will be revoked, yes?”
“Yes, that’s clear.”
Leo murmured something from the side, and Wangel added, “And if you don’t get back in time, that will also make me cancel the breaks.”
“Of course.” Binyamin nodded, struggling to contain his excitement.
“Go.” Wangel laughed and patted him on the shoulder. Binyamin murmured a few last words of thanks and left. He would run to the factory to reassure his friends that everything was alright. They had been alarmed together with him, when they heard that he had been summoned to Wangel at the office.
But maybe it was a shame to waste the time to go to the shul afterward, to his grandfather. It was better to find a place here in the area, someplace clear of the odors of the leather and the fur, where he could learn a bit by heart.
A few moments later, he was out of the factory. He turned right, toward the wall. Between the factory and the wall were the fox kennels, and there were children wandering around there. Binyamin recognized the older Elkovitz boy, David’s son. The thirteen-year-old looked very much like his father. The boy waved in greeting, and even that motion reminded Binyamin of his father.
Binyamin waved back. “Hi there.”
The younger boy stopped. “Thanks for the tefillin,” he said quietly. “It was I who noticed that the retzuos weren’t good anymore, and I told my father.”
“Good eye,” Binyamin complimented him. “They really were very old. I understand that you once learned the halachos of tefillin?”
“Not really,” the youth replied. “But my grandfather, zichrono l’vrachah, left my father a paper with rules, and I read it before my bar mitzvah.”
“A paper,” Binyamin echoed.
“Yes, with all the rules relating to tefillin.”
“That’s what we call halachos.” Binyamin smiled. “So you did learn.”
“Fine, if that’s what you want to call it…” The boy smiled, his breath swirling upward in the cold air before dissipating. “Thanks for the help. I’m Yanku.”
“Pleasure to meet you. You’re in charge here, right?”
“Yes.”
“Until?”
“I don’t know, I guess until one of the younger ones grows up…” He waved a hand to the children running around, some of whom had still been part of the school until just a few months earlier. Binyamin looked at them, wanting to say something, but then fell silent.
A figure near the kennels suddenly caught his attention. “Who’s that walking there, near the foxes?”
Yanku turned to look. “Him? That’s Kush, Mottel Kush. He pops in here sometimes to take the old bread.”
“The old bread?”
“Yes, from whatever is left from the bakery at the end of the week. It’s usually given to the foxes and sheep.”
“So don’t the animals eat that bread?”
Shabbos
Candle Lighting Starts Here
“Not always. The Wangels provide large amounts of animal food and meat, and the sheep get straw, which they like. Sometimes the animals don’t even look at the bread, and it sits there until it gets moldy.”
“Moldy…”
“My parents also can’t think about moldy bread,” Yanku said when he saw Binyamin’s expression. “Baruch Hashem we were born in this generation, and not those terrible camps of fifty years ago. We don’t lack for bread, so moldy bread is almost like the end of the world.”
“But…why does Mottel take it?”
“I don’t know. He said something about birds near his house. Maybe this is how he wants to catch them, and slaughter them.”
“I don’t know.” The boy wrinkled his nose. “We don’t need this bread. So I really don’t mind that he takes it. If anything, it helps me keep the place clean.”
Binyamin shook himself. He glanced for a long moment at Mottel’s receding back, and then turned away from the kennels.
“Why did you come here now?” Yanku asked curiously.
“I got a break and I wanted to go there.” He pointed to the wall.
The boy looked at the white rectangles scattered at its base. “To the cemetery?”
“Not really. I wanted to learn a bit, in an open, clean place. But…I think that I have something more important to do right now.” He turned around to the sloping path. “Goodbye, Yanku!” he said.
He almost ran to the residential area, with the wind pushing him on all sides. He estimated that he had less than twenty minutes left to his break. His legs were aching when he stopped at the doorway of the preschool, knocked at the door, and pushed it open. Naomi stood there, her back to him.
“Naomi?” Binyamin asked breathlessly, taking off the scarf that covered his mouth. She turned, and her jaw dropped. The children flocked over to them like small, curious birds. “It’s your brother, Naomi!” one boy declared knowingly. “Right?”
Naomi smiled at him and turned to her brother, looking worried. “Is everything okay?”
“With me, baruch Hashem, yes. Wangel was even very happy with some work that I did, and because of that, he so kindly granted me a daily break.”
“A daily break!” Her eyes sparkled. “How nice! So listen, I think—”
“We’ll talk about my break another time, Naomi. I just saw Mottel Kush. Tell me, did you deal with that issue?”
“I didn’t get to it yet.”
“Naomi, it really can’t be pushed off. He was near the kennels just now, collecting old bread.”
“How did he get there in the middle of work time? Did he also get a break?”
“I don’t know,” Binyamin said. “Maybe he slipped away for a few minutes. The cutting work that he does is not something you do all day, so instead of sitting and not doing anything, he might have gone out for a few minutes. It’s not terrible. But Naomi…”
“I’ll take care of it,” she said. “Tonight, bli neder. But now, I have no way to leave. I just let the other teacher and Katy go, because I owed them a few hours already— you know, for all the times I kept having to leave…”
“How about I’ll watch the kids now, and you can run over to Kush?”
“Now? When she’s in the office? Or do you mean that I should break into their house when she’s not around? Come on, Binyamin—I said I’ll take care of it tonight, and b’ezras Hashem, I will.”

Q: I feel like I am completely at a loss with my five-year-old son. He is the baby in my family and has always been a homebody. He loves his siblings and definitely doesn’t have any problems socializing when he is at home. Also, when I am around, I can see that he is natural and fun with his classmates and friends.
It’s when I leave that we have a problem. When he was younger, he would kick and scream when I dropped him off at school. Now, I see him slowly retreating into himself when it’s time for school or else he tells me he doesn’t feel well enough to attend. He refuses to go to friends’ houses to play and seems to be completely focused on staying home. I thought this kind of behavior would end a long time ago. What is going on with my loving, adorable son?
A: First, I want to say that it is great that you are asking this question. Most parents are uncomfortable addressing social issues with their children because they don’t want to find out that there is something wrong. The good news is – from the way you described your son – there are some relatively simple solutions. Your son seems to be struggling with anxiety – more specifically – separation anxiety, which has made socializing outside of the home difficult. What is separation anxiety? Most people think that separation anxiety is something our six-month-old infants develop and our toddlers grow out of. Separation
anxiety before a child is two years old is completely normal and helps children learn how to master their environment.
However, in reality, separation anxiety can manifest itself at almost any age during childhood, especially during times of stress. Children with separation anxiety worry about separating from their parents during school, work, a quick errand, bedtime, or even when they are in the next room. Separation anxiety can make leaving the house a torturous process for both the parent and the child.
The New York Times’ Health Guide explains that the symptoms of separation anxiety include:
• Excessive distress when separated from the primary caregiver
• Reluctance to go to school or other places because of fear of separation
• Reluctance to go to sleep without the primary caregiver nearby
• Repeated physical complaints
Drs. Andrew Eisen, Charles Schaefer, and David Barlow, in their book, Separation Anxiety in Children and Adolescents, give some tips for helping children overcome their anxiety:
• Relaxation techniques. When children experience anxiety, their whole body tenses – sending messages back to their brain that there is danger around them. The goal of relaxation techniques is to
IF THEY DON'T LEARN THE WAY WE TEACH, WE MUST TEACH THEM THE WAY THEY LEARN
Rifka Schonfeld, Director
calm the body in order to get the child’s brain to recognize the serenity. Some relaxation techniques include deep breathing, different positions that send blood to the head, and singing songs.
• Self-soothing language. As babies, children learn to self-soothe when they wake at night by sucking their thumbs, humming, or using a pacifier. Likewise, as children get older they can utilize self-soothing language in order to provide themselves with comfort. The most important part of this process is that it is the child who does the soothing themselves. Some sample phrases are, “Mommy always comes back” or “I’ve been alone before. I am safe and I am calm.”
• Gradual separation in small increments of time and space. Depending on the severity of the anxiety, start separating yourself from your child in very slow increments. For instance, if your child can’t even handle when you are in another room with the door closed, sit in the next room with the door open (within sight of your child). After a few days of this, experiment with closing the door for a few moments. Next, work on being downstairs while your child is upstairs. Then, try the backyard while he is inside. Each time you successfully complete a step, discuss with your child the fact that he is safe and you came back.
With time, your homebody will be begging you for sleepovers at his friends’ houses.

INGREDIENTS:
1 tub of Mehadrin IQ Parve ice cream (flavor of your choice)
7 Mehadrin IQ Parve mini ice cream sandwiches
5 Mehadrin Parve ice cream bombs
1.5 oz dark chocolate, melted
Optional: Edible gold dust spray Chocolate bark for decoration
DIRECTIONS:
1. Lay the Mehadrin ice cream tub on its side and slice off a 1.5-inch piece from the top, cutting through the carton. Transfer the ice cream slice to a parchment paper or cardboard tray (for easy transfer), then carefully remove the carton paper. Freeze until ready for the next step.
2. Cut each mini sandwich ice cream into four pieces: once horizontally and once vertically. Once cut, keep them in the freezer as they melt quickly.
3. Arrange the mini ice cream sandwich slices around the ice cream layer. Alternate the slices so that they face forward (cookie side showing) and sideways (ice cream side showing). Return the cake to the freezer.
4. Cut the Mehadrin ice cream bombs in half vertically and arrange them face down around the edge of the cake to create a dome-like border.
Topping/Decor:
To create a chocolate disc, use a 9-inch plastic plate and place a 1 lb plastic container face down in the center.
Pour melted chocolate around the plastic container, filling the rest of the plate.
Transfer the plate to the fridge or freezer to allow the chocolate to set.
Once hardened, remove the chocolate disc from the freezer, let it sit for 30 seconds, and carefully release it from the plate.
Optional: To achieve an elegant finish, spray the chocolate disc with edible gold dust and place it over the ice cream bombs.
Stick pieces of chocolate bark into the center of the cake and spray the bark with edible gold dust if desired.

BE FIT WITH BENEFIT
QI love pomegranate juice and was told to drink it for a specific issue I am having. I am also trying to lose weight and I am wondering if drinking it daily will interfere with my weight loss. Please advise. Thank you.
APomegranate juice has gained popularity as a health-boosting beverage, celebrated for its high antioxidant content and potential benefits for heart health, immune support, and overall well-being. But how dietetic is it? Can it affect insulin levels, and will drinking it lead to weight gain?
Pomegranate juice is a nutrient-dense beverage that offers a variety of vitamins and minerals:
One cup of pomegranate juice typically contains around 130-150 calories and 33 grams of carbs.
It has minimal fiber, as most of the fiber is lost during juicing. It is rich in vitamin C and contains significant amounts of potassium which helps regulate blood pressure. It is also packed with antioxidants.
Pomegranate juice, while nutrient-rich, is not a low-calorie or low-sugar beverage. It contains natural sugars that can contribute to your daily caloric intake, which may be a concern for those on a calorie-restricted diet. However, unlike sugary drinks with empty calories, pomegranate juice offers a variety of health benefits, making it a more balanced choice.
If you are watching your sugar intake or are on a weight-loss diet, it's essential to monitor portion sizes. A small serving (around 4 oz) can provide health benefits without adding too many calories or
sugars to your diet.
The natural sugars in pomegranate juice are mostly in the form of fructose. While it is a natural sugar, it still impacts blood sugar levels. For those with insulin resistance or diabetes, consuming large quantities of pomegranate juice could cause a spike in blood glucose, leading to an elevated insulin response.
That said, some research suggests that pomegranate juice may have a more moderate impact on insulin sensitivity compared to other fruit juices. Its polyphenols may actually help reduce inflammation, which plays a role in insulin resistance. Nevertheless, it’s recommended that individuals with blood sugar concerns consult with a healthcare provider before incorporating large amounts of fruit juices into their diet.
Pomegranate juice can fit into a balanced diet without necessarily causing weight gain. However, because it is relatively high in calories and sugar, excessive consumption could contribute to a caloric surplus, which may lead to weight gain over time. The key is moderation—incorporating small amounts of pomegranate juice into your diet can provide health benefits without tipping the scale. My personal recommendation would be that a half a cup of pomegranate juice take the place of a serving of fruit to avoid weight gain.

Hashem will always forgive us when we do Teshuvah wholeheartedly.
Many years ago in a city called Nineveh, the residents were wicked and unkind to each other. Hashem instructed Yonah to travel there to tell the people to do Teshuvah otherwise He would destroy the city. Yonah did not want to go. He feared the Non-Jewish people of Nineveh would listen to him immediately, causing the Yidden to look bad, since they did not always listen to the Neviim so quickly. Instead of going to Nineveh, Yonah boarded a ship going to a place called Tarshish. Suddenly, a raging storm threatened to sink the boat! Yonah and the sailors understood that he was the cause of the storm, and asked one of them to throw him overboard. As soon as the sailors lowered Yonah into the water the storm stopped. Yonah was swallowed by a huge fish, where he stayed for 3 days. Yonah davened to Hashem to save him. “Please save me! I was wrong for not going to Nineveh, but I will go now.” Hashem saved Yonah and the fish spat him out onto the shore. He went to the marketplace of Nineveh and relayed Hashem’s message to the people. The people of Nineveh listened to Yonah and did Teshuvah. They fasted and put on sackcloth. They mended their bad ways and returned stolen items. Hashem saw that they were sincere and spared the city.
DELVING DEEPER BRING IT HOME
Even though the people of Nineveh were so wicked, when they did Teshuvah properly, Hashem forgave them. Aren’t we lucky that Hashem is so kind? We have a guarantee that no matter what type of mistakes we make, Hashem will always accept our Teshuvah. It is never too late to make a better choice, a choice that brings us closer to Hashem.
What is one step of Teshuva you can take, to bring yourself closer to Hashem?
Open the jar and layer the lid of the jar with air-dry clay, creating dips and hills for a more dynamic sea floor look.
Make two large balls of yellow clay, mold one ball into an oval and the other into a triangle.
Insert the edges of your fish, and greenery into the blue clay.
Yonah Aquarium PARSHA
Roll out the blue clay in a thin layer and carefully press on top of the entire white clay.
Connect the triangle to the circle and then press a toothpick through the entire fish to steady it, sprinkle gold glitter all around.
Screw the lid on to the container and enjoy your beautiful Yonah Fish Aquarium!
Sprinkle blue glitter onto the surface.
Cut a toothpick in half and poke into each side of the fish, set aside. Create 4-5 sea greeneries by rolling out a piece of green clay and sticking a small cut piece of toothpick into it.
