A first of it's kind Supervision For Cellphone Stores!
The nisyonos of technology are so immense. There is a lot of confusion, with new devices coming out every day. It’s impossible to be able to keep track and warn the tzibbur about the danger of each device.
Following months of toil, TAG Boro Park has established a Supervision for cellphone stores, which runs according to the clear instructions of the Va’ad Harabannim and brings a historic clarity to the yearlong confusion.

ESTHER RAPAPORT
NINE A.M. IS A COMPLETELY FICTIONAL STORY WHICH TAKES PLACE FIFTY YEARS AFTER THE HOLOCAUST.
RECAP OF CHAPTER 38: The eclipse ends, and Wangel finally allows the Jews to leave the shelter rooms. But the scare has clearly shaken him up, and he tells the Jews that he doesn’t know why he continues putting himself in danger for them.
Dena’s son Duvi enjoys the eclipse, as well. He tells his Israeli grandparents about it, and also mentions how much his mother likes working in the factory.
CHAPTER THIRTY NINE
Sodium Chloride (15 kg)
Sodium Silicofluoride (1 kg)
Zinc Chloride (2 kg)
Formaldehyde (200 ml)
Sodium Bisulfate (2 kg)
Norsulfazol/Sulfidin/Furacilin (25 tablets)
Mix the ingredients well until it becomes a smooth mixture.
Soak the fur in the mixture for a few hours until the hard top layer disappears entirely—
“Binyamin, how are you? Baruch Rofei cholim!” Mottel Kush cast a shadow on the paper his young friend was working on as he chewed on an apple.
“Baruch Hu u’baruch Shemo, I do feel much better.”
“What’s this paper?”
“This? These are instructions plus a list of ingredients for the initial soaking of the furs.”
“I got that much.” Mottel smiled and sat down on a nearby tree stump, far from the other workers who were using the break to grab a snack. “I meant to ask why you are sitting and writing it, and more than that—why are you writing nonsense?
Fifteen kilograms of Sodium Chloride? You can throw that fur right into the garbage! What else did you write there? Twentyfive tablets…really! It’s one thing if you put in Norsulfazol,
but Sulfidin? You need at least fifty if you want to keep the proportions that you started with.”
“I know.” Binyamin nodded as he studied the paper in front of him.
“So what’s this about?”
“Don’t talk about it so loudly, but Leo Sherer asked me to draft something about fur production. A few of the secrets of the trade, so to speak.”
“For his newsletter? Who does it interest here?”
“Not for his newsletter. If I understood correctly, it’s for a newspaper on the outside.” He took a deep breath.
“What happened?” Mottel grew serious. “Why do the Nazis suddenly want to publicize the secrets of this trade?”
“So, as you can see, they don’t really want to publicize it…they told me not to write the truth, so that no one should try to compete with them. But there is going to be a series of articles in one of the Austrian newspapers interviewing Wangel on the subject of processing furs at home. Don’t worry, no one is going to try it based on this, because we are not going to share the whole production process, but Wangel says that even what we do write should deviate from the real thing.”
“And what happened that he’s agreeing to have our brand written up?”
“I think that some of the Austrian media was writing against him because of what happened during the solar eclipse last week. You know, when he didn’t let a lot of the curious onlookers come close to the area, and he sent guards to chase them

away, claiming that it was private land and that there were enough other places where they could observe from…” “Guards? Where does he have guards from?”
“I guess his friends from the Wehrmacht came to help.”
“And is that true? Is it really their private land?”
“Sherer told me he thinks that it is.” Binyamin made a Borei Nefashos, got up, and stuck the paper and pencil into his pocket. “In any case, they want to generate some positive public opinion, after some Austrian journalist wrote against their zealotry for privacy and their impolite behavior.”
“They actually asked my brother-in-law Aryeh,” Binyamin said tersely. “He’s been very busy with creating the formula for the soaking, aside for the initial cleansing, and he’s seen a lot of success with what he’s doing. So I’m writing
Mottel Kush followed him to the door of the factory, a bit breathless. “Very strange story, these articles… Do you think it means we’re in danger of being discovered?”
“I hope not.” Binyamin shrugged. “I don’t think Wangel is being accused of anything so terrible. I think he’s just afraid of his brand losing popularity. You’re out of breath, Mottel.” He turned around to the young man walking half a pace behind him. “Are you feeling okay?””
“Me?” Mottel laughed, but his lips curled into a distorted smile, and he appeared anything but cheerful. “Since you collapsed, Binyamin, you suspect everyone who you meet
“Not everyone. But you really don’t look good,” Binyamin
Binyamin nodded but didn’t ask anything more. He went into the big building and continued to the production hall. Sitting down, he positioned his foot over the pedal as he guided the needle to the stitch he had been working on
He raised his eyes for a moment to look around. The buzz in the production hall was the usual, but his eyes searched for Mottel. There he was, with his steel scissors. Standing next to a fur that was stretched onto the frame, preparing
He shouldn’t do it. Didn’t he realize that his hands were
“Mottel!” Binyamin called in a loud whisper.
Binyamin stood up. “Don’t cut, Mottel. It’s not worth it. Your hands are shaking. It will be bad news if the fur is ruined.”
Mottel studied him for a long moment and then turned his gaze to the hand holding the scissors.
“Maybe you are sick, Mottel,” Binyamin continued worriedly. “Please, don’t ignore what I’m saying. You don’t look good. It’s not worth it for you to work in this situation.
If you cause them damage, it will cost you several times more than going home to rest for a day.”
An inscrutable expression crossed Mottel’s face, but he put the scissors onto the little stool next to him and sat down on the other stool.
“I’ll get you something to drink, Kush,” Binyamin said.
Mottel didn’t object. His hand was still shaking as he took the cup of water and sipped it. Binyamin kept his eyes on him. “You look like someone who skipped a good breakfast…” he joked.
“But you ate, didn’t you?”
“I didn’t have much of an appetite. But yes, I ate a little bit.”
“And now, during the break, did you have something to eat?”
“No. I don’t always eat during the break.”
“Can I bring you an apple?”
Mottel cleared his throat. Binyamin didn’t know what his considerations were, but he had a strong feeling that it was only his self-respect that made Mottel answer “no.”
Suddenly, Leo Sherer appeared next to them. “What is going on here?! Chatting on account of work hours?!” He looked behind him for a moment, and Binyamin noticed Wangel’s brown uniform entering the production hall. Binyamin stood up and hurried to his table, glancing at Mottel, who remained sitting on his stool, the scissors still sitting on the stool beside
him. He didn’t touch them.
“What’s with you, Kush?” Leo clasped his fingers. “The furs are waiting to be cut!”
“I don’t feel well,” the younger man answered quietly. “I don’t think it’s right for me to accidentally destroy the expensive materials ”
“You don’t feel well? Another one?! What’s been going on here lately is becoming impossible!”
Leo was tense, nervous, afraid for his own skin. “It’s a good thing you used your discretion, that’s all I can say. And this day will come off your salary, of course.”
The Hauptmann stood at a distance for a long moment, observing the scene but not interfering. His eyes traveled around, and then he came straight over to Binyamin’s sewing machine. “Your brother-in-law said you are writing material for him for the newspaper,” he snapped angrily. “What’s with it?”
“It will be ready this evening, Herr Wangel.” Binyamin stopped pedaling and raised his gaze. “B’ezras Hashem,” he added softly, under his breath.
Wangel stared at him for a long moment, and then said, “We’re going to need a series of five articles with instructions on how to process furs at home. So you will do that. Is that clear?” He came around the worktable so he could get closer to Binyamin.
His eyes fixed on the soft fur whose edges spilled off the table, and the gorgeous finishing seam that adorned one third of it.
“Continue working!” he said sharply. The hall suddenly fell silent, with only the regular rustles and rumbles of the work getting done generating a melancholy hum in the background.
“We didn’t know that you’re good at writing,” the Hauptmann said, after a few long moments of following Binyamin’s actions. “But your sister knows how to write children’s stories, or so I’ve heard. And your father also wrote very well. He had lots of notebooks.”
He folded his arms and his eyes locked on Binyamin’s.
“Have you come across some of the stuff your father wrote? Maybe a letter from someone, or an important note?”
“Dena, am I calling you during your work hours?”
“Yes, but it’s quiet here now.” Dena pulled the red and black elastic band over the cardboard file and slid it into the shelf. “How are you, Charna?”
“Very good, baruch Hashem.”
“How did you know to call me here?”
“What do you mean? Your mother-in-law told my mother that you started working at the factory. Listen, I wanted to tell you that we’re getting together tomorrow.”
“Who is ‘we’?”
“The group. I told you about our women’s group.”
“Oh, yes…” Dena stuck the last delivery forms of the day into the photocopy machine, one after another. She just had to file them in the right place and then she could go home.
“So, will you come?”
“I need to see if I have someone to watch the kids.”
“Their grandmother. No excuses, Dena. I’m sure you learned in seminary over there about how you have to be proactive if you want to get anywhere Although you probably don’t want to get anywhere here. You probably want to move away from Vienna as soon as possible, because you’re sure that you can only be a righteous wife in Eretz Yisrael, and there’s nothing for you in Austria—right?”
“I…” Dena didn’t have time to ponder if she should get insulted or be impressed by the distinctly un-European bluntness. The sound of a motor coming to life outside drew her to the side window, and she watched two huge trucks leave the factory area, loaded with cinnamon, black pepper, cayenne pepper, and sweet paprika.
Did she really have nothing to do here in Austria?
“You know what? I’ll come to the get-together,” she said to Charna. “B’ezras Hashem.”

It’s crunchy and has all the flavor combinations you want. It also makes for a great contribution to any meals you’ll be joining.
Ingredients:
1 package spring mix
1 apple, thinly sliced
1/2 cup pecans
1/2 cup pomegranate seeds
1/2 shallot, thinly sliced
1 small carrot, cut into matchsticks
1 package beef fry
8 oz frozen butternut squash
1 tbsp olive oil
1/4 tsp kosher salt
1 tsp honey
Sprinkle cinnamon
Black pepper to taste
Dressing Ingredients:
4 tbsp beef fry fat
2 tbsp finely chopped shallots
2 tbsp spicy brown mustard
2 tbsp mayonnaise
Directions:

Kosher Communication
- BY AHARON HIRSH COHEN -
Walking through the streets of Boro Park over the past week, one cannot help noticing the posters plastered over every lamp post, announcing the revolution of the new pikuach on cellphone stores.
What does this mean? What led up to this and how long did it take to arrange?
Reb Chaim Meir Framowitz, a member of the board of TAG Boro Park reveals what went on behind the screens.
“The idea of stores having supervision is something that has come up every year for the last fifteen years. Either the store owners themselves wanted to be able to provide only safe devices or the customers wanted this.
“However important it was to make sure 3G phones were kosher, the introduction of 4G phones made this obligation all the more imperative, since every 4G phone can have highspeed internet capability.
“There were some stores who have been able to filter flip phones themselves at various points in time. But Rabbanim always encouraged only buying phones which had already been filtered. Any 4G phone purchased had to be taken immediately to TAG, or any other filtering company to disable the internet capability.
“The alternative was for the stores to take the devices to be filtered before they started selling them. Indeed, there are three or four stores in Boro Park who haven’t sold unfiltered flipphones over the past few years.
Phony Solutions
“Another option was for the stores to block the phones themselves, however they didn’t always have the same level of responsibility as a filtering company and didn’t filter them professionally. This meant the filters could be by-passed or weren’t doing what they are supposed to.”
He stresses, “This is not because they are any less ehrlich than the filtering companies, rather they are not as professional – since they don’t do this all day – they are busy with sales, whereas a filtering company specializes in this.
“Just like a caterer cannot be a mashgiach, since he has to focus on serving and preparing the food, how can a merchant be expected to be a
mashgiach when selling devices?
“For this reason, there were kehillos and mosdos who didn’t want to endorse the idea of cellphone stores filtering the devices themselves. However, the alternative was to buy an open phone and take it to a filtering company which was also not a good idea.
“People often procrastinated and didn’t take devices to be filtered immediately or they arrived at the filtering stores after hours etc. Cell phone stores can be open when the filtering stores are not.
“While they were ultimately installing a better filter on their device, this meant walking out of the store with an unfiltered device in the meantime…
High-speed Changes
“The tech world is a very fastmoving industry. Devices which were previously not possible to be filtered become possible, and vice versa! It is not practical for any filtering company or Rabbanim to release new statements every day with the constant changes. Not always is it smart or practical to release a kol koreh.
“There were phones that filtering companies were happy with the level of filter that could be installed on them, but then something changed and this was no longer the case.
“Another big factor is all the new devices for which there is no current way to filter at all.
One Size Doesn’t Fit All
“Various companies released phones which were blocked properly to various levels, but brought great confusion about whether they’re acceptable and even the store owners themselves were unsure what to recommend to who.
“Not all devices are for all people! One needs da’as Torah – how is the customer supposed to know?
Dangerous Devices
“People don’t always think to check before purchasing a device if it can be filtered. What would commonly happen was that when consumers found out their devices couldn’t be filtered, they stopped using them, putting them away somewhere in the house. But obviously having a device open to the internet in their
possession often became a michshol… “To keep warning people to only buy devices which can be filtered is very difficult.
Not everything can be publicized and even when it is, doesn’t necessarily catch everyone’s attention. Also, how can one publicize a general rule regarding devices which are sometimes permissible and sometimes not – it depends what the circumstances of the one buying it are.
In addition, some stores sell smartphones and tablets etc, people always wanted an option of walking out of the store with a filtered device, now with advances in the kosher technology market things that weren’t possible just a few months ago are now possible and will be available in the participating stores.
Another major achievement is the market for rental devices, there are a number of cellphone stores that rent out mobile devices from basic phones to smartphones to tablets, keeping them filtered all year round carries a logistical & financial burden on the stores, them comes the complexity of various filter levels per each renters distinct needs, now with the help of a lot of input from the store owners and development on the filter company’s end there will be solutions available at the participating stores.
The Luxury of Boro Park
He draws an interesting comparison to explain why the Pikuach is so important:
“What is the advantage of living in a Boro Park rather than in Texas? You don’t have to go to Shoprite and study each product to see if it’s kosher or how reliable the hechsher is, so too with this.
“You go to the local grocery knowing that it only sells kosher products. Obviously, there are different levels of kashrus and standards in hechsherim, but you can feel more or less comfortable that the products on sale are okay.
“Technological devices have become items purchased frequently and there are so many updates and different models available, people want the luxury of knowing that things are somewhat okay, and then decide which level is right for them – just
as they would regarding a hechsher for food.
“Over the last few months cellphone store owners and filtering experts from various kehillos saw the confusion amongst consumers and sought a way to solve this. They all made boundaries as to which devices they sell to whom, but they couldn’t be mashgichim! At the end of the day, they were often walking around with a guilty conscience. They worked with TAG and filtering companies to devise a solution.
They then approached the Rabbonim to help research together to ensure it’s realistic.
Store owners need the authority as to what to tell a customer. No retailer wants confused customers - he wants the clarity to convey the da’as Torah.
Business cannot be done properly when the customer is unsure as to whether a device is completely kosher or not or in between.
When asked how such a thing can be implemented when each kehillos have their own standards, he explains:
“For this reason, there will be clear signs in every store saying which devices are allowed by which mosdos and various other guidelines.
This is also a major benefit for the customer since he knows exactly which device is for him and which don’t even come into consideration.
“All cell-phone stores in Boro Park have principally accepted the new pikuach. No-one didn’t participate. Obviously, there are certain obstacles and it may be harder for certain stores to implement but the guidelines of TAG Boro Park Rabbanim are designed so that every store can implement them whilst still making profit. After countless meetings between store owners, askanim and Rabbanim, the asifah was scheduled.”
The Asifah Takes Place
After all research and preparation and deliberation to supervise stores, Harav Binyomin Landau, Yoshev Rosh of Vaad Harabbanim of TAG Boro Park invited all cellphone owners to his house to launch the initiative with the koach of achdus and kiddush Hashem.
The idea was also to enable an open conversation regarding all the achievements until now and hear from store owners of any future concerns which might disturb it.
Thursday night Parshas Ki Tzeitzi/ September 12th סמל' was a seemingly typical night in Boro Park. It was the beginning of the new zman in the mosdos and every hall hosted another simcha.
Not far from many of these halls a very un-typical event was taking place… Every store owner set aside all other engagements and participated fully, feeling content that finally they can supply Boro Park residents with devices they can feel comfortable to take home, without affecting their business too much.
The event began when the chairman, Reb Chaim Meir Framowitz, warmly welcomed and praised the store owners for their enthusiasm to help increase kedushah in Boro Park.
He stressed how this is the culmination of all the months of deliberation between store owners and askanim to come up with a method which is al pi Torah and also practical.
After this, every store owner had the opportunity to introduce themselves and share their experience and initiatives with the other participants. They relayed the impact they have had on customers, assisting them with the information and guidance they need.
It was also amazing to hear of stores who for years have only been selling flipphones and others who try their best to ensure that smartphones are only sold to the appropriate clientele.
The audience was by no means only a chassidishe olam – it was very colorful –and this is what made it so special!
To see how store owners of all types share a common goal - to protect their customers - and how good they all felt about attending the asifa.
Indeed, when Rav Landau spoke, amongst other points, he emphasized how inspiring it is to see everyone united to raise the level of kedushah and how happy he is that we reached this historic moment.
This was followed with a detailed explanation by Reb Naftuly Heimlich, who has been instrumental in making this a reality, of all the technicalities and exactly how everything will work.
This initiative will be taken on shortly and all stores will have an emblem showing that they are under the supervision of TAG and the store owner proudly participates in this new initiative. This will send a clear message that one can feel comfortable that any device purchased in the store is safe.
Everyone left the asifa knowing that they are partners in changing Boro Park forever and ensuring the safety of the doros bs”D.
From now on everything customers can feel comfortable when buying devices.

BE FIT WITH BENEFIT
QI am a teacher and I had the summer off and really got to relax and get my eating under control. I even managed to lose a few pounds and exercised too. Now that I am going back to teaching, how can I keep to my healthy habits and not gain my weight back? I am getting into a very hectic schedule with yomim tovim back-to-back and can use your supportive tips.
AWhether you are a teacher that is returning to the classroom after a relaxing summer or a teen going back to being a student, it can be challenging, especially when you’ve made great strides in your health and fitness. As a teacher, balancing a busy schedule with yomim tovim prep, and the demands of the school year can make it difficult to stick to the healthy habits you’ve established. However, with a few strategic adjustments, you can maintain your progress and continue feeling great throughout the school year. Here are some tips that you might find helpful. These are for teachers, mothers, students and anyone going back to work.
1) Plan your meals in advance: One of the best ways to stay on track with your healthy eating habits is to plan your meals ahead of time. As a teacher, your days are packed, so having a meal plan can save you time and help you avoid making unhealthy choices out of convenience. Personally, I like to prep lunch for the next day when the kitchen is still messy at dinnertime the night before. Some people like splitting roles with their children or siblings, where one makes the salads for one day and the others make it the next day. Some of my very busy clients aim to prepare salads for the week ahead on Sundays. They layer all the veggies and stack the containers in the back of their fridge so that it does not get soggy. One of the high school teachers I worked with in the past used to keep her salads in her car in the cooler days and when she would be done with her job, she would have a cooled lunch ready for her in the car and she would not return home or do her errands before she had her lunch.
2) Healthy Snacks: Keep healthy snacks like nuts, fruits, or yogurt in your classroom or bag. These can help curb hunger and keep your energy levels up without resorting to sugary treats. If you are working with a particular nutritionist and following a particular meal plan, have the approved snacks handy, in your bag.
3) Incorporate exercise into your daily routine: Exercise doesn’t have to take a back seat just because your schedule is busier. There are creative ways to keep moving, even on the busiest of days. Let's explore some options:
-Morning workouts: If you can, start your day with a quick workout. Even 10-15 minutes of exercise in the morning can boost your energy and set a positive
tone for the day. If you have the ability to take a quick walk before you wake your kids or leave for school, do so! Walking in the crisp fall air is invigorating.
-Active breaks: Find opportunities to move during the school day. Stretching, walking around your classroom, or even a quick set of exercises during a break can keep your energy up and reduce stress. Aim to take the stairs, or park further away from your job so that you can get some steps in.
-Weekend activities: On weekends, try to stay active with activities you enjoy, whether it’s a brisk walk, a class, or a session with a personal trainer. This can help balance out any missed workouts during the week.
4) Prioritize Sleep: A good night’s sleep is essential for managing stress and maintaining your health. Aim for 7-8 hours of sleep each night to help your body recover and stay energized. This summer you hopefully got to sleep longer hours as you were not working, and if you are a teen reading this, you likely got shorter nights than all year, but prioritizing sleep is critical for you to be healthy and for you to maintain your healthy weight. Tiredness leads to negative food choices and unhealthy habits.
5) Stay hydrated: Drinking enough water is a simple but often overlooked aspect of staying healthy. Dehydration can lead to fatigue, headaches, and cravings, which can derail your healthy habits. Get yourself a new water cup for the new school year if you think that might be helpful for you. Also, in the cooler months, warm herbal teas can be a comforting way to stay hydrated while avoiding sugary drinks.
6) Set realistic goals and be kind to yourself: Understand that there is a time and place for everything. While you were not working this summer you were able to prioritize your health and fitness, but with the coming months, that may get harder as you no longer have the luxury of extra time and prep. Be kind to yourself and don't aim for perfection. All efforts invested will lead to good results. You don't have to be 100% invested to keep yourself healthy. With yomim tovim and a busy teaching schedule, it’s important to set realistic goals and be patient with yourself. Not every week will go perfectly, and that’s okay. It is also important to acknowledge and celebrate your successes, no matter how small. This positive reinforcement can help keep you motivated. Celebrate every win, big or small.

DID YOU KNOW? IMAGINE
In the month of Elul, Hashem makes Himself more accessible to every person. No matter what we have or haven’t done in the past year, we have a special opportunity to connect to Hashem and ask Him for forgiveness, along with a good and sweet new year.
There was once a wonderful king. He lived in a grand palace in the capital city, far away from the fields where the common folk worked. It was difficult and very unusual for the common folk to see the king, let alone have a private audience with him. On rare occasions, the king would come out to the fields. At such times, even the simplest of people could approach him. He would receive every single one of them with a happy face and grant them their requests. They would all then escort him back to the city. Although usually, only a select few were granted audiences with the king, these dedicated subjects now became part of the exclusive group that would have access to the king in his throne room.
DELVING DEEPER
BRING IT HOME
What Mitzvah can you do to strengthen your connection to Hashem?
This Mashal explains the dynamic between the Yidden and Hashem during the month of Elul. Hashem is always available and ready to be connected with us, but sometimes it feels very far off, similar to the common folk in our Mashal who could not easily access the king in his palace. During the month of Elul, there is a special revelation of Hashem that makes Himself more accessible to us than during the rest of the year. It is up to us to approach Hashem, our king, and decide that we want to connect with Him. He makes it more attainable, but it is still up to us to make the first move to get closer to Him. Each day of Elul (besides the day before Rosh Hashana) we blow the Shofar to wake us up to Teshuva, to remind us that we have a special opportunity right now to get closer to Hashem, and to ask Him for a good and sweet new year.
Bubble Blowing Shofar PARSHA
* be sure to do this project outside or on a well-covered surface.
Using scissors, cut the label off of an empty water bottle and then cut the water bottle in half.
In a slightly larger container pour 2 Tbsp. of water and about 2 Tbsp. of soap, and mix well.
Turn over the bottle, open the cover, and blow bubbles to the shofar’s beats. Tekiya, Shaverim, Terua!
Cut a sock in half and cover the water bottle. Secure the sock at the mouth of the water bottle with a rubber band and trim excess.
Dip the bottom of the bottle into the soapy mixture, then turn it over.
How satisfying to watch the bubbles come out of the Bubble Blowing Shofar. TOOOOO
In 4 small containers pour a small amount of watercolor (or diluted food dye.)
Using a pipette, drop some of each color onto the bottom of the bottle until the entire surface is covered.
