Recap: Harry assures Mrs. Kleinberg that they’ll have bail. Meanwhile, Mr. Kleinberg is rushed out of his cell and ordered to put on civilian clothes before going into the courthouse.
Mr. Seidman comes down to Mrs. Gordon’s office to find out her decision. She says she will come up to his office later to give him the report.
Mrs. Kleinberg decides to wait for the judge’s decision in the lawyer’s office, and invites her daughters to join her. They leave Mrs. Gordon’s office, and on the way out, Perry says a heartfelt thanks to Mrs. Gordon, mentioning the incident with her parents earlier in the year and thanking Mrs. Gordon for helping them anyway.
Remembering the incident, Mrs. Gordon decides it’s time to fully forgive Mr. Kleinberg, and she declares her forgiveness out loud.
CHAPTER 49
Mrs. Gordon stood before Mr. Seidman’s office door, steeling herself.
You’ll never be more ready than you are now, she told herself. She knocked.
“Yes?” the disembodied voice came from inside the office.
“It’s Mrs. Gordon,” she said. “Come in.”
“I hope you have good news today, Mrs. Gordon,” Mr. Seidman said bluntly.
“I’ve thought about your generous offer, Mr. Seidman,” she replied, ignoring his opening remark.
“Yes?”
“I’d like to discuss it in more detail.”
“Does that mean you’ll be staying on?”
“I can’t commit until we have a clear plan,” Mrs. Gordon said, surprising herself with her firmness.
How come she hadn’t been able to talk like this before she’d gone to find another job, gotten into hot water, and then been re-offered her job through an unexpected miracle?
Perhaps she hadn’t reached the point of being ready to walk away until she’d gone through all that emotional upheaval, and come out on the other side ready to approach the situation from a logical, rational perspective.
If Mr. Seidman was ready to work along with her demands, it would make sense to stay. And if he didn’t, she wouldn’t feel bad if she needed to leave her job.
Keeping that mindset firmly at the forefront, she continued speaking.
“Your offer of hiring an assistant is generous, and an idea that I think really cuts to the heart of why I wanted to leave. The job of principal has many undefined duties, and that makes it so that the job is essentially endless.”
Mr. Seidman didn’t say anything, though his eyebrows rose. Mrs. Gordon wouldn’t be deterred.
“So for this to work, we would need to clearly delineate what duties will be given to the assistant. Once we are doing that, we would also make it clear what the actual duties included in the principal role are.”
“What are you referring to, Mrs. Gordon?” Mr. Seidman asked, sounding wary.
“I’m not referring to anything in particular,” Mrs. Gordon said calmly. “And I’ve always been happy to go out of my way for Bnos Golda. But to prevent further burnout, I think it’s necessary to create a situation where we can limit that to situations where it’s truly necessary.”
Mr. Seidman threw up his hands, surprising Mrs.

Was it fair to gloat at the way she so clearly had the upper hand? It seemed like Mr. Seidman was desperate enough to do anything to keep her on.
“We also discussed a new salary,” Mrs. Gordon continued. She was sure that Mr. Seidman would finally, finally balk at this, but he didn’t.

He nodded.
“What did you have in mind?”
Mrs. Gordon stated the figure she’d discussed with her husband Nachman last night.
“Look, you have to go a little higher so that he’ll give you what you really want,” Nachman had said, pragmatically.
Now, as Mrs. Gordon said it out loud, she wondered if it was a completely unrealistic number.
But Mr. Seidman, simply nodded. “We can do that,” he said.
He saw Mrs. Gordon’s surprise, though she tried to hide it.
“You know, I discussed this with the board members. Many of the board members were of the opinion that if you were to leave, Bnos Golda would find itself on very shaky ground.”
Mrs. Gordon wondered what had happened to the world that it had decided to paint her in the colors of sainthood.
Or maybe it was simply payback time for her unstinting dedication?
She was going to stay in Bnos Golda, the school she loved. But this time, her burden of responsibilities would ease considerably, and she would be compensated in a way that she deserved.
In a daze, she walked down the stairs, looking at the bulletin-board covered walls as if her eyes had just been opened.
No longer did she have to think about bidding goodbye to these cheerful, lifefilled spaces.
She wouldn’t need to mourn the product of her dreams, her sweat, and dedicated toil. She’d be able to continue reveling in overhearing the girls’ discussion in the hallways, seeing how the girls were dressed according to their high standards, and feeling the electricity in the air when there was a spirited assembly going on.
She would continue helping to create this atmosphere, the one she thrived on and lived for.
She would be able to continue hearing the type of feedback from mothers that made it all worthwhile, like the time a mother told her, “Thank you, Mrs. Gordon. I always hear my child davening to Hashem for everything she wants, and she told me it’s because Mrs. Gordon said we could. It’s so beautiful.”
Those days when she’d thought she’d be leaving it all behind…how had she even thought she would be able to do it?
So Chayala was right, she thought with a wry smile.

“You know, you’ve been with Bnos Golda since we started, and you definitely helped shape the vision for this school. The board members felt that you are the only one who can carry out the vision and build on it.”
He smiled, wryly.
Mrs. Gordon walked up and down the hallways of her school, reveling in the knowledge that it was staying hers Like a child coming home, she looked her beloved school up and down, noticing how much it had grown and changed.

“My instructions are to keep you on as principal, no matter what. So yes, we will work on everything you’ve requested, and I’d like you to sign a new contract as soon as possible.”
Sooner than she had dreamed, Mrs. Gordon found herself on the other side
Bnos Golda had been part of her life for so many years, it would have been incredibly difficult to ever cut off from it. Knowing that she didn’t have to, created a euphoric lightness in Mrs. Gordon.
For now, she would ignore the fact
"AND IF THAT WAS WHAT CAME OUT OF BEING A PRINCIPAL, THEN IT WAS A GOOD THING SHE WAS KEEPING HER JOB."
that this school she loved so much sometimes created the most intense clashes between its demands and her need to be there for her family. For now, she would just appreciate that she no longer had to contemplate leaving Bnos Golda. She was here to stay.
Just for now, she would give herself permission not to think about the challenges that would come along with it.
“Mrs. Gordon?” Mrs. Klein, the school secretary, stopped her in the hallway. “Did you hear the news?”
Mrs. Gordon had gotten so lost in her thoughts she didn’t understand what Mrs. Klein was referring to.
“But I thought his daughters were in your office!” Mrs, Klein exclaimed, seeing Mrs. Gordon’s puzzled look. Pulled back to reality, Mrs. Gordon grasped what she was talking about. Her heart began pumping in anticipation.
“What happened?” she asked urgently.
“The judge let Mr. Kleinberg out on bail,” Mrs. Klein announced, gratified at being the first in the know. “He’s going home tonight.”
“Baruch Hashem,” Mrs. Gordon said, sighing in relief. “Thanks for telling me!”
Somehow, the news seemed to fit perfectly with the day Mrs. Gordon was having. It was a day for new realities to take shape.
She remembered the words she’d spoken in her office just an hour ago. How she’d declared her forgiveness of Mr. Kleinberg aloud. Had her forgiveness had something to do with Mr. Kleinberg getting bail? There was no way for Mrs. Gordon to know. But she felt a lightness in place of the grudge she’d been carrying, knowing that she’d completely let go. Now that empty space made way for a new emotion: happiness. She was genuinely happy for Mr. Kleinberg that he had gotten bail.
Yes, she was happy for the man who had dragged her through the dirt. She was truly delighted at his good fortune.
And if that was what came out of being a principal, then it was a good thing she was keeping her job.
For the first time since their lives had been upended, all the Kleinbergs were home together, just as they had when their lives had been normal. The marrieds had already gone home, after coming over to visit and say hello to their father.
Shachne had bought a big celebratory dinner for all of them at their favorite takeout place, thrilled to see his brother released. He’d stayed around to discuss the decision, but Mr. Kleinberg had been mostly quiet and morose, so he too, had left.
Perry and Bruchi, despite their excitement at having their father come home, were shocked into silence by the way he looked. He’d lost a lot of weight from the lack of food, and his eyes were either vacant or brooding.
He hardly smiled.
Instead of feeling celebratory, Perry felt mostly like crying when she looked at her father.
Perry wasn’t surprised when Bruchi crept into her room after they’d all gone in for the night, eyes red and face blotchy.
“What’s going on, Bruchi?” Perry whispered.
Bruchi sniffled in response.
“I know,” Perry said, and her voice teetered on the edge of tears too. “It’s not even what we would have thought in our wildest dreams.”
“I knew that having Tatty home wasn’t really going to be the same. But I wasn’t expecting this!” Bruchi burst out, and her voice was saturated with tears.
“I know,” Perry said again, a sob catching in her throat. She squeezed
her sister’s hand, and Bruchi didn’t pull away.
“Now I know why Mommy didn’t want us to come to the courthouse. Imagine seeing Tatty like this in court,” Bruchi shuddered. “This whole thing is so scary. And imagine if Tatty loses the trial and ends up going back to prison. Imagine how bad it is if this is what Tatty looks like after just two weeks in jail!”
The image of her father’s gaunt and gray complexion rose in Perry’s mind.
“You know, Bruchi?” Perry said, thinking out loud. “Remember what it was like when Tatty first got arrested? How scary it was?”
Bruchi nodded.
“Remember how everyone was sure that there’s no way Tatty’s going to have bail, and the whole world was mad at Tatty? And then the hearing was pushed off, and all the other stuff happened, and they found out new information, and look! Tatty’s home now on bail.”
“Right,” Bruchi said. “It is pretty amazing to think about all that now, once we know how the story ended.”
“Obviously, being in jail was terrible for Tatty, but you see how Hashem was planning it all. Like each thing had to happen in just the right time so that Tatty could get bail.”
“So what are you trying to say, Perry?”
“There’s a reason for everything that happens, even stuff that’s so hard. That Hashem knows that it’s hard for us how Tatty came home today, and that it’s also part of a plan.”
Bruchi smiled through her tears.
“What?” Perry asked. “Don’t you agree with what I’m saying?”
Bruchi chuckled. “You just sound exactly like Mrs. Gordon, Perry.”
Perry smiled back. “Is that a bad thing?”
“No, it’s a good thing,” Bruchi said, still smiling. “Actually, it’s a very good thing.”

Q: Why do we need self-esteem in order to be a good friend?
A: When people think about friendship, they think about reciprocity, about give and take. However, if you don’t feel like you have anything to offer – it is very hard to give of yourself and let others give to you. That’s where self-esteem comes in.
What are some signs of healthy selfesteem?
• Recognizing your own strengths and weaknesses
• Admitting to your mistakes and learning from them
• Forgiving yourself and others for mistakes
• Listening to other points of view aside from your own
• Taking care of yourself – physically and emotionally
• Feeling proud of your positive accomplishments and letting go of your faults
Many people confuse the concepts of self-esteem and ego, assuming that if you believe in yourself you are automatically egoistic and arrogant. Someone who is self-confident is able to see past his own needs and wants, while an
egoist believes that he is the only one who has worth around him. This is the key difference between those who have self esteem or overactive egos: self-esteem often means you are confident enough to allow for criticism and failure, while ego often leads to discrediting all others around you because you are the only one who can be “right.”
Why Do You Need Self Esteem For Friendships?
In their book Self Esteem, Matthew McKay and Patrick Fanning explain the importance of self-esteem by stating that when you reject certain parts of yourself, you are damaging psychological structures essential to healthy living. For example, in the same way that you protect a physical wound, when you are critical of a part of yourself you will find yourself avoiding anything that might aggravate the pain of self-rejection. Therefore, you will take fewer social, academic, or career risks.
To that end, you will erect barriers of defense in order to protect yourself. Those barriers can include blaming others, bragging about things you don’t truly like about yourself, getting angry, or making excuses. You can imagine how damaging this kind of behavior can be to friendships.
How Can You Cultivate Self-Esteem?
IF THEY DON'T LEARN THE WAY WE TEACH, WE MUST TEACH THEM THE WAY THEY LEARN
Rifka Schonfeld, Director
• Take inventory of your strengths. Make a list of the things you are good at – and then spend more time productively doing the things you do best. Spending time doing tasks that you excel in will build your confidence.
• Realize your limits. No one is without flaws. While this might not always seem to be true, recognizing that everyone else has his or hero own failings can give you perspective on your own. You are a unique and distinctive person regardless of your flaws.
• Stop putting yourself down. Restructure the way you speak to yourself by identifying when you are putting yourself down and making a conscious decision to speak more kindly to yourself. Constantly putting yourself down can seriously injure your self-image.
• Celebrate progress and small victories. Building self-esteem happens in baby steps. Acknowledge when you do things right, even if it’s only a small improvement. Giving yourself compliments can help you develop belief in your abilities.
It’s hard to believe, but friendship truly begins by believing in yourself and having the ability to accept both constructive criticism and affection.

It’s a special time, the stage when your little infant is ready to taste solid foods. The joy of exploding tastebuds is hard to compete with.
Yet, this exciting stage can be accompanied by discomfort. Some children take hard to the introduction of new foods as their systems aren’t always developmentally adjusted to the newly introduced food. That’s why many babies become constipated and uncomfortable when they begin eating solids.
Constipation in babies and children can be caused by other factors too. Improper diet, inadequate water intake, a change in routine, allergy to milk and medical conditions can be causes of constipation in children. Certain foods can also make it harder to eliminate waste.
Regular elimination is important, so if you notice signs of straining, or if an infant or child goes several days without a bowel movement, it may be time for some intervention. If after trying to increase fiber and liquid intake bowel movements are still not regular and smooth enough, you may consider laxatives. (If an infant younger than three months old is constipated, it’s important to consult with your pediatrician. You may also want to ask your health provider before starting or changing any supplements for children.)
Constipation is among the most frequently encountered digestive complaints in children. When considering intervention for it, it’s important to take into account that stimulant laxatives can be habit forming. This means that the body becomes used to receiving the stimulant in order to produce a bowel movement. When using habit-forming products, a child may become dependent on it. It’s better to use other elimination-supporting supplements instead, all the more so when a product uses pure and natural ingredients to offer relief.
Constipation can cause disruptions and discomfort. Fortunately, KonstiKid™ contains a blend of vitamins, minerals and soothing botanicals to help ease the process. Children ages six months and up can take one tablespoon daily. Children ages 3 years and up may take one tablespoon two times a day. This product can be used daily when a child is constipated and can also safely be used on a regular basis.
KonstiKid™ by Advanced Nutrition by Zahler looks to nature to help the process of elimination go smoothly for infants and children ages six months and older. It is a gentle and safe digestive support for occasional constipation in children. KonstiKid™ is a laxative-free formula designed to promote digestive wellbeing in children. It is a unique formula that features a blend of fibers, vitamins and minerals to ease digestive function.
The Kakadu Plum contains vitamin C and is an antioxidant that helps with hydration. It has an osmotic effect, pulling water into the intestines, and can help make stools softer.
KonstiKid™ contains Magnesium Citrate, which is known to support bowel function by relaxing muscles as well as softening stool by pulling in water.
SunFiber® from guar gum fibers and Fibersol® from nonGMO corn starch are both good sources of fiber and prebiotics. Fiber helps to bulk up stool, making it easier to be eliminated from the body. Prebiotics are food for the good gut bacteria and can stimulate the walls of the intestines to move along stool.
These herbs help soothe the stomach. Fennel Seed can also help with getting rid of gas. Slippery Elm Bark can help bulk up and soften stools. Slippery Elm is also a good source of mucilage, a fiber with a laxative effect which can be helpful for constipation.

RECAP OF CHAPTER 37: A solar eclipse causes spectators to come to the area near Samson Lager, and the Hauptmanns are very nervous. Everyone needs to go into hiding, including Binyamin, who ran out at the last minute to get tefillin.
A note slid under the door of Shelter B: Is Hauptmann Josef Wangel inside now?
The note was sent back: No, only one of the young ones.
Binyamin crumpled the note in his tightly closed fist, and without waiting, he cautiously turned the handle of the heavy door and entered. His eyes fell on the person sitting closest to it. “Thanks.” He smiled wanly to Elkovitz and slowly closed the door behind him.
“So you also came late,” the man whispered.
“As you can see.” Binyamin took a deep breath and opened the velvet satchel. “I didn’t know they were so pressured. Now, if you don’t mind…”
“Yes, of course,” Elkovitz replied. “Daven. I won’t bother you.”
Binyamin davened. Were the other man’s eyes following his every move? He wasn’t sure, but he felt a strange prickling at his back. Naomi had told him that Elkovitz’s son knew what tefillin were, and he’d remarked at the time that his thirteenyear-old brother also put them on. The boy hadn’t said a word about his father, but it was fair to assume that if the thirteenyear-old son donned tefillin, someone had taken care to teach him how to do it.
He suddenly heard the high-pitched voice of the Nazi woman with them. “I’m not supposed to be trapped in here, missing out on everything!”
She passed by the wall with the phone in her hand, and opened the door of the shelter. A moment later she slammed it closed, and her keys clanged together as she locked it from the outside.
Most of the people fixed their eyes on the high window near the ceiling of the shelter. The slice of sky that was visible from there was already blue, appearing almost normal for this hour.
“Does that mean we’re getting out of here soon?” Rechel asked her mother, who was seated beside her.
“I guess we’ll see,” Sarah Liba said as she peeled apples for the preschool children.
Naomi went over to them, glancing curiously at her brother, who was davening in the opposite corner of the shelter. “How did Binyamin get to the shelter?” she asked in a whisper.
“We cleared out the infirmary,” her grandmother answered quietly. “At least, of whoever was able to leave.”
“So why did he get here at the last second?” she blurted out.
“Or rather, a minute after the last second?”
“You can put people behind walls, Naomi dear,” her grandmother replied, “but not their spirit. And Binyamin’s spirit is very high, higher than any wall…”
Rechel murmured something, and her mother turned to her with a questioning look.
“I just said that his father, zichrono l’vrachah, also had a very
lofty spirit.” Rechel swallowed. “And I don’t want Binyamin to go to that same high place that his father is in. Not yet, at least. He’s so young, Mamme!”
Naomi took the peeled and sliced apples from her grandmother’s hand, but remained standing there, her gaze alternating between the two women she loved most, and regretting that she’d even brought up the subject.
“It will be good, b’ezras Hashem,” Sarah Liba said quietly.
“You’ll see, it will yet be good, Rechele. Binyamin hasn’t done anything bad or rebellious. He just wanted to put on tefillin, and I gave him permission. I didn’t realize how quickly they wanted us to move.”
“They wanted us to hurry, and they threw us in here very quickly. But for how long are we going to be stuck here?” Elkovitz murmured in Binyamin’s direction, after the latter had finished davening and had taken off his tefillin.
Binyamin kissed the batim. “Good question.”
“They are very tense. It’s a natural phenomenon that draws lots of onlookers to the mountain areas.”
“And then? They’re afraid that these people will discover us?”
“Yes.” His finger stroked his daughter’s small, red forehead. Her eyes opened, and her gaze fixed on the person sitting beside her father. She studied Binyamin solemnly, as if trying to convey something with her gaze.
“It’s amazing…” Binyamin murmured. “I haven’t seen a baby up close in a long time. And I haven’t held one either.”
tefillin are these?”
“Belsky’s. I can’t always get them, but today it was easy…”
“And dangerous.” David smiled at him.
“I didn’t know,” Binyamin defended himself. “Even my grandmother didn’t know. She let me run to the shul.”
“Would you mind if I put them on while you are holding her?”
Elkovitz asked. “I’m afraid there’s a problem with one of my retzuos.”
“So you have your own set of tefillin! Where is it from?”
“My father also put on tefillin, and they were his.” Elkovitz shrugged. “It was the last thing my father asked of me, before he got onto that train… Actually he asked me for two things, but the other one isn’t relevant today.”
“What was it?” Binyamin was curious.
“That I should marry a Jewish woman. But as I said, that’s not a problematic issue here.”
“Baruch Hashem.”
“And you should know that I have no idea, Jews, why we continue to put ourselves in danger like this for you.”
“So perhaps you’d like to remember what it feels like? I wouldn’t mind,” the father admitted. “As tiny as she looks, she’s baruch Hashem growing very nicely. And she’s starting to get heavy, especially after hours of holding her.”
“Sure, no problem,” Binyamin said, reaching out his arms.
“Support her head from over here, because she can’t hold it up yet, and that’s it.” He observed from the side, smiling.
Binyamin didn’t dare move. His eyes held the baby’s gaze, and she stared back at him with her deep gray orbs. “She really does have a nice name,” he said, after a moment.
“But this is not the infirmary, you know, and it’s not a quiet night hour,” Elkovitz said in a cautioning tone.
“True,” Binyamin whispered and looked around. There was no one close by. “Although then it wasn’t a quiet time, either. Did you know that my grandmother patrols the whole infirmary area at night? And that she’s not the only one?”
“I figured that they don’t leave us totally unattended. Which
“Yes.” Elkovitz took the tefillin case that was resting behind them. “So can I use these?”
“Sure,” Binyamin said. “They’re not mine—they are meant for any Yid here who wants to put on tefillin. And after we get out of here, I’ll be happy to check your retzuos. I have black paint in the factory, if that’s the problem.”
“That, too. But besides for that issue, they are also very worn.”
“You can speak to my brother-inlaw Aryeh. When they begin the processing of the leather, there are lots of pieces that are not usable because of their shape. Those pieces are good for retzuos. It would be a good idea to give him advance notice, if you want that it should be processed l’shmah.”
“I don’t really know the concepts so well.” Elkovitz carefully took the batim out and stood up. “Can you speak to him for me, please?”
“Sure,” Binyamin said.
Babbe headed over to him. “I see that you’re an excellent babysitter,” she said with a smile. Her eyes, though, emitted rebuke when she bent over to him. “Why were you so late? I reassured your mother, but I know very well what time you left the infirmary. It took you much too long to get here!”
“I didn’t do anything, Babbe,” the boy whispered in response, as he lowered his gaze to the tiny eyes that were staring at him. “I went straight to the shul, but there, I suddenly saw Wangel, and he was furious at him.” He pointed with his chin toward Elkovitz, standing a few feet away with his eyes closed. “Wangel didn’t expect to see a single Jew still outside. I was afraid he’d see me also, so I decided to hide. Only afterward did I realize that it’s better for me to get here a bit late than for them to find
that I wasn’t in any of the shelters throughout the time we were required to be there. Who knows what they’d accuse me of, if that were to happen ”
She nodded understandingly, but before she could say anything, they heard the sound of the key turning. The door opened, and Hauptmann Josef Wangel stood there, looking much calmer.
“Finally, we’ve finished sending all those onlookers away,” he said, without a smile. “And you should know that I have no idea, Jews, why we continue to put ourselves in danger like this for you.”
“Suddenly, in the morning, it looked like night!” Duvi was standing in front of the big tape recorder, pontificating animatedly. “And Rebbi told us…he told us to sit on the window ledge to watch. So we made a nice row, and we held onto the bars, and we sang, ‘V’hayu l’me’oros b’rakia hashamayim.’”
Dena smiled at him and nodded, motioning for him to continue. She preferred to speak as little as possible; she couldn’t stand the way she sounded in recordings. Her voice always sounded so nasal and strange.
“Then Aharon told everyone that if the moon goes over the sun during the day, it’s a bad sign for the goyim! And some other boys told him to be quiet because maybe Olaf, the janitor, was passing by in the hallway near our classroom. Ha ha, but Olaf doesn’t even understand Yiddish!” He smiled, paused for a moment, and glanced at his mother.
“Ask them questions,” she whispered.
He continued. “Did you also have an eclipse in Eretz Yisrael, Saba and Savta? What time? Or maybe you don’t need it in Eretz Yisrael, because there are no goyim there? Oh, I forgot, there are Arabs… Did it get dark for them also, all of a sudden? Yossi asked Rebbi how come the goyim are not afraid of the eclipse and they go to look at it and take pictures, and Shaya said if he would chas v’shalom be a goy, he would run home to hide.” He laughed again.
“But Rebbi told us that the goyim don’t know how to read the seforim, so they don’t know that it’s a bad sign for them.”
Dena smiled encouragingly.
“Right you’re very happy to get this tape? Ima will record Shloimy tomorrow afternoon, because he’s sleeping now. I know you’ll be happy to hear his voice also. Oh, wait, she won’t record him in the afternoon, because she’s going to work then…you know, in Abba and Zeidy Hanter’s factory. I think she’s very happy to go there.”

The sweet nutty flavors of the maple tahini paired with the crisp savory potatoes is a true match made in heaven. Grab a fork. You’ll want to sneak in a bite before everyone else finishes it off.
Ingredients:
2-3 tablespoons oil for brushing
2 medium sweet potatoes, peeled and cubed
2 cups baby potatoes, washed and cubed
¼ teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon freshly cracked black pepper
1/2 cup Achva unflavored Tahini, well stirred 1/4 cup honey or maple syrup
1 tablespoon lemon juice
Directions:
1. Roasted Potatoes: Preheat your oven to 425° and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
2. Spread the cubed sweet potatoes and potatoes in a single layer on the baking sheet. Drizzle with oil and sprinkle salt and pepper. Toss to coat.
3. Cover the pan with foil and bake for 30 minutes.
4. Remove the foil and toss the potatoes. Return to oven and bake for another 15-20 minutes until crisp on the outside, and tender soft on the inside.
5. Tahini Drizzle: In a small bowl, whisk together the tahini, honey or maple syrup and lemon juice until completely smooth and thickened.
6. Drizzle over the potatoes before serving. Sprinkle some sesame seeds and fresh herbs, if desired.
Crunchy, juicy, and seasoned to perfection, these easy pan-fried fritters are the perfect alternative to schnitzel. Serve with mashed potatoes, french fries, pasta, salad, or any other side your family prefers. Yum.
Ingredients:
1 lb. ground chicken
1 large egg
3 tablespoons mayonnaise
3 tablespoons breadcrumbs
½ teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1 clove crushed garlic or ½ teaspoon garlic powder
1 tablespoon soy sauce
3-4 tablespoons oil, for frying
⅓ cup all-purpose flour
Directions:
1. Add ⅓ cup all-purpose flour to a medium shallow bowl and set aside.
2. In a large bowl, add the egg, mayonnaise, breadcrumbs, salt, black pepper, garlic, and soy sauce and whisk to combine. Add the ground chicken and mix until combined.
3. Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
4. Using a large cookie scoop, portion the chicken mixture into balls.
5. Gently dip each ball into the bowl of flour and roll until fully coated.
6. Place the coated patties into the hot oil and cook on each side for about 3-4 until completely golden brown. Do not overcrowd the pan.
7. Cut one patty open to check for doneness.
8. Once done, remove from heat and place on a bed of paper towels to drain.
9. Repeat with the rest of the chicken mixture. Serve warm.
This restaurant-style Spanish rice takes minutes to make, and serves as a highly-versatile appetizer or side. Feel free to add any chopped veggies of your choice while sauteing the onions.
Ingredients:
2 tablespoon oil
1 white onion, chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 cup white long grain rice (I used Uncle Ben’s), rinsed well
1 ¾ cups water or chicken broth
1 15 oz. can tomato sauce
¾ teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon black pepper
Directions:
1. Heat the oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the oil and saute for 10-15 minutes until lightly golden. Add the minced garlic and rice and cook for 2-3 minutes, stirring in between, until the rice is golden.
2. Add the water, tomato sauce, salt, and pepper to the pan and mix to combine.
3. Close the pan lid and lower the heat to a simmer. Cook for about 20 minutes until the rice is softened and flavors have melded. (Check 15 minutes into the cooking to make sure that there is enough water, as the rice can easily burn). Fluff with a fork and serve warm.
Serving Suggestion: Place a scoop of rice on top of a breaded eggplant round.

QHow bad is it for weight loss if I treat myself to a glass of wine every Shabbos? It is a really relaxing treat for me and I am wondering if I need to give it up when I am dieting. Thank you.
AWine is an integral part of Shabbos meals for many, however, if you’re on a weight loss journey, you may be wondering if your glass of wine is affecting your progress. The sugar and alcohol in wine can impact weight loss, but with mindful choices, you can still enjoy your wine without derailing your goals.
Wine, like all alcoholic beverages, contains calories. These calories come from both the alcohol and the sugar in the wine. Here’s how these components can affect your weight loss:
1. Calories from alcohol: Alcohol contains 7 calories per gram, making it more calorie-dense than carbohydrates or protein (both of which contain 4 calories per gram). This means that even a small glass of wine can add up in terms of calories. For instance, a 5-ounce glass of wine typically contains between 120 to 150 calories, depending on the type.
2. Sugar content: The sugar content in wine varies depending on the type. Sweet wines like Moscato or dessert wines can contain significantly more sugar, leading to higher calorie counts. Dry wines, on the other hand, have less sugar and fewer calories. Sweet champagne contains a lot of sugar as well.
3. Metabolism interference: When you consume alcohol, your body prioritizes metabolizing it over other nutrients. This means that while your body is processing the alcohol, fat burning can temporarily slow down. Additionally, alcohol can increase your appetite and lower inhibitions, making it easier to overeat or
indulge in high-calorie foods.
The good news is that you don’t have to give up wine entirely while trying to lose weight. Moderation is key. A glass of wine on Shabbos can be part of a balanced diet, but it’s important to be mindful of how much you’re drinking and the type of wine you choose. One glass of dry wine is a better option because it typically has fewer calories and less sugar. Stick to one glass and be cautious about refills. Remember, it’s easy to underestimate how much you’re drinking, especially when socializing or enjoying a long meal.
Here are some more tips to help you out:
1. Balance your meals: If you know you’ll be having a glass of wine, consider balancing your meal by choosing lighter, lower-calorie dishes. Focus on lean proteins and plenty of vegetables to offset the calories from the wine.
2. Stay hydrated: Alcohol can be dehydrating, so make sure to drink plenty of water before, during, and after your meal. Staying hydrated can also help reduce the likelihood of overeating.
3. Track your intake: If you’re closely monitoring your calories, don’t forget to include your wine in your daily intake. This can help you stay within your target calorie range while still enjoying a glass.
Keep in mind that if it is during yom tov season, having a glass of wine with every meal but not be advisable for all the abovementioned factors.

When a farmer gave Bikkurim to a Kohen, he recited a text of thanksgiving to Hashem. This teaches us to thank and appreciate what someone does for us.
Farmers from all over Eretz Yisroel are heading towards the Beis Hamikdash with their full baskets of Bikkurim fruit, ready to give them to the Kohanim as a token of thanksgiving to Hashem. The sound of a flute accompanies the joyful procession. As each farmer comes up to the Kohen, he holds the edges of his Bikurim basket while the Kohen holds the basket from below and waves it in every direction. The farmer recites a passage of thanksgiving to Hashem, then places the basket next to the Mizbeach, to be distributed to the Kohanim on duty at that time.
What are some words you can use or actions you can take to show Hashem your gratitude for all that He gives you? How about when it comes to thanking another person?
Expressing thanks is important, both to Hashem and to any person who helps you. When feeling gratitude, you might think it in your head, but the Mitzvah of Bikkurim teaches us to verbalize it and to do so with joy and intention. The farmers who brought Bikkurim put in extra effort to beautify their gifts, traveled to the Bais Hamikdash with songs on their lips, and verbally recited a passage of thanks to Hashem. While we cannot bring actual Bikkurim today, we can make a point to thank Hashem for the many gifts He has given us, as well as the people who have helped or done us a favor. Just as the Bikkurim were accompanied by a verbal recitation and brought with fanfare, we too can express our thanks and put thought into how we do so. For example, you can smile, look the other person in the eye, and specify what you are grateful for. If it’s appropriate, you can even give the person a gift with a nice note.
Soften a large piece of white fondant with your hands. Roll it out on parchment paper until it is large enough to cover the cake.
Use purple fondant to make small balls and place them on the top left corner of the cake to create a cluster of grapes.
Add small red and purple fondant balls inside and around the pomegranate and grape shapes on the cake.
Place fondant over cake, smooth sides, trim excess, seal corners, and remove any overhanging fondant at the bottom.
Take red fondant, roll into a ball, flatten, cut ¾ of a circle for a partial pomegranate, and place it at the bottom right corner of the cake.
Voila! The Bikkurim Cake is beautifully decorated and ready to showcase the decorating skills you’ve learned!
Divide the remaining fondant into 3 balls, and mix in red, green, and purple food coloring into one of each ball then knead until the color is even.
Use green fondant to create two leaves and a stem, then place them above the grapes. With the red fondant, create three leaf-like shapes, place them in the middle of the pomegranate so that the middle of each shape sticks out.
