Recap: Mrs. Gordon gets a call from her sister-inlaw Devorah. Devorah admits that her boss was the one who leaked the confidential information about Mrs. Gordon taking on the job at Devorah’s agency. Nachman Gordon points out that this will change their question regarding the commitment they gave to the agency about the job.
Casey grills Mr. Kleinberg in the jail cell, once again giving Mr. Kleinberg mussar. As Mr. Kleinberg davens Maariv before going to sleep, he internalizes Who is truly in charge of what will happen at the bail hearing.
All the Kleinbergs have trouble sleeping the night before the bail hearing. Perry spends the time davening her heart out..
CHAPTER 47
“Really, I can’t believe this is happening,” Shaina said, her hand on her forehead as if to ward off a headache.
Nachman, as was his wont, chuckled, still looking bemusedly at the phone receiver he held in his hand.
“Every time I think the case is closed, decision made, something happens, and all of a sudden, I have to decide again from scratch!” Mrs. Gordon complained.
“It is pretty interesting that he said you’re allowed to go back on your word to the agency,” Nachman said.
“He asked a lot of questions before he said that it’s okay,” Shaina said.
“Right, but at the end of the day, he said you could back out. Now you’re free to make any decision you want.”
“Again. Make the decision again. I have no brain space left for any of this.”
“It isn’t the same decision, though,” Nachman pointed out.
“What do you mean?”
“Before, you were deciding between keeping your same old job and taking a new one that sounded better. Now, you can decide between keeping your old job with a bunch of improvements, or taking a new job that might not be as good as you thought it was.”
I’m very concerned, I’m constantly getting infections, I hope everything is fine.
FORGET IT, I’M FINE. I used this incredibly effective ProDermix APD IV probiotic supplement, it changed my life. Welcome to the new me!

Shaina thought about that for a minute.
It was true. Until this job at the agency came up, she would have jumped at the type of offer Mr. Seidman was making. It would have been a fairytale resolution to be able to keep her old job without the same level of pressure, with a pay raise to boot.
But now, she’d already started getting used to the idea of leaving her job. Of giving it over. She’d felt like she was doing the right thing. Was it no longer the right thing to give up her job?
She was so confused.
She could feel a headache coming on.
She looked up pleadingly.
“Nachman, can you call the Rav back? Can you ask him, not if I’m allowed to back out of that job, but rather if I should? What’s the right thing to do in this case?”
“I could do that,” Nachman said slowly. “If you want me to.”
“What else can I do? I can’t handle the pressure of having to figure this out anymore.”
“Well, maybe first I’ll tell you what I think is the right thing to do in this case.”
Shaina nodded eagerly. “Nachman, I’m only begging you since this whole thing started to tell me what you think!”
“Right, but until now, I really didn’t think you would listen, and it says that it’s better not to say anything than to speak words that won’t be listened to,” Nachman said, his eyes twinkling to take the sting out of his comment.
Shaina didn’t say anything, just tried to look as ready to listen as possible.
“I really think that the right thing to do would be to keep your principal job,” Nachman said the words slowly. Shaina slumped back in relief.
“Great, then that’s exactly what I’ll do,” she said.
“I’ll tell you why I think so,” Nachman continued, encouraged by his wife’s response. “There really are so many reasons to keep your principal job. You touch so many girls’ and families’ lives. You make such a difference to the chinuch world. You
are building a school that really will affect generations.”
He paused to take a breath, as Shaina listened to every word intently.
“True, it’s possible someone else could do this job, though probably without half as much heart and dedication. True, no one else can do your job of raising your children. But what if it’s possible to do both, without one compromising the other?”
“And you think with an assistant, that it will be possible?”
“It sounds like it could be a great solution. Doesn’t it sound like that to you?”
“Well-”
“Hm?” Nachman prompted.
“I still feel like I would feel torn between my job and family,” Shaina said, eyes watering. “It’s hard for me to always feel like I have two priorities that are equally important, and to feel pulled between the two. That’s what’s so difficult for me.”
Nachman didn’t answer right away. When he did, he spoke softly, recognizing the turmoil his wife was experiencing.
“True,” he acknowledged. “But I wonder if this isn’t something that every working mother feels, even if they aren’t a principal.”
“It probably is,” Shaina Gordon conceded. “And it isn’t an option for me to stop working, obviously. So I might as well do something so meaningful and impactful, as long as it doesn’t affect my family too much."
She heaved a deep, teary sigh.
“So that’s it? I’m going to continue juggling being both a mother and a principal? You’re sure it’s a good idea for me to always be torn between the two?”
“Maybe,” Nachman said tentatively, “you wouldn’t have to feel so torn if you accept that this is what your life is supposed to look like right now. A juggling act. An act where you only catch some balls, some of the time, but that’s exactly the way it’s supposed to be.”
“The way it’s supposed to be,” Shaina repeated, dumbly. Then the words penetrated.
A soft light shone in her eyes.
“Right now, you’re saying, it’s the
right thing for me to live with this torn feeling and learn to accept it.”
Nachman nodded. “I think so.”
When she was quiet for a long moment, Nachman asked, “Do you think you can?”
“I don’t know,” Shaina answered honestly. “But I can try. And feel more at peace just for knowing that the situation is exactly as it’s supposed to be, instead of trying with all my might to make things change.”
Mrs. Gordon unlocked the door to her office the next morning in a kind of daze.
She hadn’t had a very restful night, as she turned over in her mind the conversation she’d had with her husband. Picturing how their resolutions would actually look next year. How she would feel about it.
It was a good thing that Mrs. Kleinberg called the next morning to remind Mrs. Gordon that her daughters were going to be spending the day in her office. Otherwise, Mrs. Gordon could easily have forgotten all about it.
“Hi Mrs. Gordon,” Mrs. Kleinberg said, and the tenseness in her voice was unlike anything Mrs. Gordon had ever heard before.
“Hi Mrs. Kleinberg,” Mrs. Gordon said. She paused, unsure of what to say next.
What did you say to someone whose husband was going to court in the next few hours?
“Bruchi and Perry are on their way to school already, and I’m on my way to the courthouse,” Mrs. Kleinberg said.
Mrs. Gordon wondered if Mrs. Kleinberg had just needed someone to talk to on the way to calm her nerves.
“It should be with a lot of hatzlacha,” Mrs. Gordon said.
“I just wanted to ask you if you could maybe have some of the girls in school daven for my husband?”
Mrs. Gordon was surprised, but she didn’t show it.
“Sure, Mrs. Kleinberg,” she said. “I’ll have the first and second graders say Tehillim for him. When is the hearing?”
“At 10 o’clock.” Mrs. Kleinberg took a shallow breath. “I really appreciate it, Mrs. Gordon.”
Mrs. Gordon hung up, all thoughts of her personal decisions gone.
There were two broken girls who were going to be walking into her office in the next few minutes, and she had to be ready for them.
She got up to get a coffee, to fortify herself for the task ahead.
Just as she was walking back towards her desk, she caught sight of a familiar blonde head.
It was Perry, followed immediately after by Bruchi.
Mrs. Gordon gave them an encouraging smile as they hesitantly walked in.
“Sit down, Perry, Bruchi,” she said. They sat, gingerly, as students were wont to do in Mrs. Gordon’s office.
“Mrs. Gordon, I have a question,” Perry said.
That was a surprise.
“Sure, Perry, what’s your question?”
Perry swallowed. “Um, last night, I was davening so hard that my father should get bail.” She swallowed again. “But then I was thinking, right teachers are always saying how we should daven that we only get something if it’s good for us? And last time you were saying that we don’t know what’s good for us? So how can I daven that my father should get bail?”
As she finished posing the question, it was Mrs. Gordon’s turn to swallow.
Typical of Perry to ask a deep philosophical question like that.
But what was completely atypical was what happened next.
Bruchi was looking at her sister in puzzlement. “What do you mean, Perry?” she asked. “Don’t you think Hashem can make it good for us that Tatty should get bail?”
Perry looked at her sister, then at Mrs. Gordon.
“Mrs. Gordon, is Bruchi right? Is that what I’m supposed to be thinking?”
“For sure, Bruchi, that is so true,” Mrs. Gordon said warmly. “Hashem can do anything, and He can also make it good for all of you that your father should get bail. Just like we saw when the hearing was pushed off, right? That it ended up being better for your father to have his hearing now, because of all the new information that came out.”
The girls nodded.
“But also, another thing you can keep in
mind, Perry, is to remember how much Hashem loves you. Like a father… and not only that, but He can do anything for you. Don’t you think it just makes sense that He’ll give you what you want, because He loves you so much?”
Perry thought about that. “But not if it’s not really good for me, like a shot.”
“That’s where what Bruchi said comes in. That Hashem can not only give you what you want like a loving father, but He can also make it be the ultimate good for you.”
Perry thought again.
“Wow, Mrs. Gordon, if you say it like that, then of course my father’s going to have bail! I want it so badly, and Hashem loves me so much, and He can make it happen, and He can even make it good for me! I’m so excited!”
She smiled, what seemed like her first real smile in weeks.
Bruchi, listening to her sister, chuckled.
“Mrs. Gordon, Perry has been crying nonstop over her Tehillim for hours. And now, after a few minutes, she’s beaming!”
“Well, Bruchi, aren’t you also excited for your father to get bail?”
Bruchi’s eyes gleamed. “Of course, I am!”
Perry turned to her sister. “So, Bruchi, what are we going to do to celebrate?”
“Come with me to La Crème,” Bruchi said laughingly. “That’s where I went with my friends yesterday. It’s a new ice cream store right near Bnos Golda and they have this Italian ice cream called gelato. It was really good.”
Perry checked her watch. “It’s almost ten o’clock. How long do you think the bail hearing is going to take?”
“I don’t know. There’s probably no way to really know, actually.” Bruchi said. “But what are you going to order when we hear the good news?”
“You said you tried it, right? So you’ll order for me.”
“I always order for you anyway,” Bruchi pretended to grumble.
Mrs. Gordon watched the two of them, amazed. Both of them had grown so much over the last few weeks, matured in ways that no one would have known. What would the next few hours look like for them?

RECAP OF CHAPTER 35: On Binyamin’s last night in the infirmary, Babbe confronts him. She tells him she knows he’s been searching for his father’s last hospitalization card—but that the file is long not there. Dena’s mother calls Mrs. Hanter senior and tells her that Dena is unhappy in Vienna. Dena’s mother-in-law promises to think of a way to help Dena feel more fulfilled.
On the bulletin board in the main dining room: For a nominal fee, you can have your clothes laundered in the factory’s washing machine. Anyone interested should please contact Elky Kush.
“Elky?” Rochel Cohen put the big ladle down on the counter when she saw her daughter approaching, and came out from behind the counter. “How are you?”
“Baruch Hashem, everything is fine.”
“What’s the sign I saw this morning all about?”
“Oh, nothing major. Peri, who is in charge of laundry at the factory, told me that the new machine is faster and has a bigger drum, so the factory workers’ overalls and aprons get laundered faster. So now the old machine is standing empty.”
“And the office decided to give people a chance to enjoy it?”
“Yes…sort of.”
“What does ‘sort of’ mean?”
“The office staff is not going to be busy with this. They have more important things on their minds.”
“So what is going on here?”
“They gave me permission to use the washing machine for this. I pay them a bit for these hours, and customers will pay me.” There was a sparkle in her eye, a look that Rochel did not recognize.
“And how do you have laundry detergent?” Rochel asked her daughter.
“I buy it.”
“But after all your expenses for the detergent and the fee to the office, how much will you have left?”
“I’ll have.” Elky clearly didn’t want to talk too much.
“But who will want to waste vouchers for this when everyone has a simple, good laundry basin and soap at home? Who needs a machine?”
“I do,” someone said from behind, and mother and daughter both turned around. One of the younger workers from the sewing workshop was standing there. “I’m sorry for eavesdropping,” she said with a gleam of interest in her eyes, “but I’m very short on time, and I have to get back to work soon.”
“Me, too,” Rochel said hurriedly and turned back to her abandoned ladle. She returned to her post behind the counter and began to serve the younger woman, who was Herzlich’s oldest daughter, her food.
“I hardly have a chance to wash all the clothes at home myself,” the Herzlich daughter confided as Rochel put two chicken balls on her plate and doled out a mound of rice next to them.
“You work hard,” Rochel said understandingly.
“Yes.” She shrugged and carried her full plate to the tables.
“The young ones today have more clothes than we do,” said Olga to her right as she placed a stack of clean plates on the counter.
“When did you last visit the grocery, Rochel? Go see how many shirts there are for sale there, along with new rolls of fabric.”
“And usually, those fabrics are the types that are hard to wash by hand,” Elky said, appearing suddenly near the counter to take her own lunch portion. “So there are those who are grateful for this offer.”
“But why are you taking more work on yourself, Elky?” Her mother was perplexed. “Are you lacking for anything?”
“No, but you can never know.” A small smile crossed her face. “Mama, tell me, if someone doesn’t come eat their lunch, does it get factored into their salary?”
“You’re supposed to know the answers to these kinds of questions better than me, don’t you think? You work in the office where the monthly vouchers are distributed.”
Her daughter chuckled. “It’s true, but I don’t feel comfortable asking.”
“But what difference does it make anyway? Are there angels here who can forego food?”
“Not forego, but they can just bring something from home. Why do we have to eat specifically what they prepare here?”
Her mother gave her a look. “I’m sure you didn’t mean to offend me and hint that the food is not tasty enough or that it’s not clean enough here.”
“No, of course not!”
“And you surely trust the kashrus of the food,” Olga added from the side, with a wink. “You know what my father says— at the beginning of the war, when he was working in the labor camps under the Hungarians, yemach shemam, it wasn’t easy for a yerei Shamayim to keep kashrus. The Reformers would mock whoever didn’t eat the same food as everyone else… Baruch Hashem the kitchens here are in our hands and not theirs. Otherwise, we would have a serious problem with the food.”
“Right.” Elky nodded, but her mother wasn’t sure she’d even heard everything Olga had said. “I trust the kashrus, I trust it all. I just want to know—does someone who doesn’t eat the cooked meal get a higher paycheck at the end of the month?”
“I don’t think so. The workers are
registered in different kitchens, and we’ve never been asked to keep track of who does or doesn’t eat their meal.”
“Oh.” Elky looked disappointed but didn’t say anything more on the subject. She murmured a polite thank you and took her food. Her mother glanced at her from afar as Elky sat down next to the Herzlich girl and got into an animated discussion with her about something. When Olga passed them by and picked up their empty plates, they fell silent, only continuing when she walked away.
“Ruchele?” Rechel Schvirtz was virtually the last one to come get her food, as usual. “You look preoccupied. Is everything okay?”
“Baruch Hashem.” Rochel had no desire to discuss Elky’s issues with just anyone. Not that Rechel Schvirtz was “just anyone”—she was a good friend—but still.
“How is your Naomi managing with parnassah?” Rochel asked.
“She’s okay. What could there be already…the preschool teacher. They get by. A bit frugally, but baruch Hashem they aren’t hungry for bread during the week.”
“And you invite them for Shabbos to you.”
“Yes, of course. And Elky?”
“She’s very tired when it gets to the weekends. I try time and again to invite them, but they come only very rarely. And she asks me if instead of them coming to us…oh, it’s not important.”
Rechel’s eyes registered surprise, but she hurried to say politely, “Running a house really takes getting used to. It’s not so easy for the young ones.”
“True. By the way, how is your Binyamin?”
“Baruch Hashem, recovering.” Rechel was understanding about the change of subject and didn’t pry any further. She parted from Rochel and joined the long table of the other seamstresses.
The rush at the counter had eased; everyone who was coming for lunch today seemed to have already gotten their portion. Rochel took a plate for herself and sat down to eat, but a moment later, she stood up again as Elky passed by the counter on her way out.
“Elky?” she called. Something inside was pushing her to try again, not to give up.
Her daughter turned around. “Yes, Mama?”
“It’s Thursday. What’s with Shabbos this week? You haven’t come to us in a long time.”
“Oh,” Elky replied, and then, predictably, she offered her regular response, which repeated itself each week in some form. “Thanks so much, Mama, but we’re so tired at the end of the week… I really appreciate that you want to help me. Maybe instead of us coming to you, you can give me the amount you planned to spend on our food for Shabbos, and I’ll buy everything we need, okay?”
Bluma Hanter didn’t come to the family’s factory very often, but when she did, the office workers appreciated it. She was friendly, smiled at everyone, and generously brought refreshments for them all. No one knew how influential she really was in the actual management of the factory.
“Dena will work here,” she said in the administrative office, in the back, after refusing an offer to sit down. “I think it will be good for her. She doesn’t speak the language well, and every other workplace will make it very difficult for her. Do you hear, Bentzy? We’ll set up a job for her here, twice a week, as a secretary, and see how it goes.”
“I don’t know, Ma… When I mentioned the idea to her a while back, she wasn’t excited at all.”
“Excited or not excited, a woman needs to have what to do, Bentzy. She needs to feel fulfilled, you understand?”
“But we don’t need another secretary,” her son said, from his big executive chair that stood next to his father’s.
“So we’ll make sure to need one,” Bluma declared. “Do you think I don’t know how it works in these offices? That I don’t see the piles of stuff on the desks? Let Dena come twice or three times a week; she can file and organize the files in the drawers, and after two or three weeks like that, you’ll want her to come every day, trust me.”
“Gladly,” her husband said in his deep voice.
Bentzy nodded. “Do you want a drink, Mommy?”
“No thanks. I had some tea outside, with the secretaries, while I was waiting for you to finish your phone calls. And I thought about something else, Bentzy. Something that will make your wife happy and show her that we appreciate her input.”
“Her input in what?” he asked, sounding almost resigned.
“You’re not supposed to sound so appalled,” she chided. “Your wife has come all the way here, with such dedication, right? To make us happy and to help out. We need to show her how much we appreciate it. That we appreciate her, the house she comes from, the chinuch she received…”
“We certainly do appreciate our mechutanim,” Moshe Hanter confirmed.
“I thought of something small that will show her that,” Bluma said as she took a colored memo paper from the table. She grabbed a pen and jotted down a few words.
“What do you think about this?” she asked, pushing the yellow square toward her husband and son. “In my opinion, this is perfect. It will be in small English letters on the bottom of the package. Something that someone who doesn’t know what we mean, won’t even see. It won’t negatively affect our name in any way, trust me. But it will make Dena happy and give us extra zechusim.”
When Dena came to her new job at the beginning of the following week, for the first time, she found a rectangular chrome-paper sheet on her desk, in shades of orange and green. “The boss asked if you can check if this is okay,” said Suri, the other secretary in the room. “Remember we talked about this color combination when you once came to visit?”
“Yes, sure,” Dena said. She wasn’t quite sure what her new job was all about, but she sat down tentatively on the upholstered chair and took the paper in her hand. Her eyes scanned the lines. She didn’t understand the German, but she knew the English.
She raised her eyes to the closed door of the conference room across from her and then lowered them back to the chrome paper, as a small smile played on her lips.

Tuscanini debuted a new line of delicious ready-to-bake focaccia and paninis and we’re all here for it. This week, we bring you a series of awesome recipes, made using the Trusty Old Betty, so you can have your easy peasy dinners in no time.
RECIPES, STYLING & PHOTOGRAPHY SARAH D. / STMTSTUDIO.COM
Your good old pastrami pizza gets an instant upgrade with this crisp, authentic Italian Focaccia crust. This takes minutes to throw together and feels instantly gourmet. Feel free to play around with your meats and sauces according to your liking.
Ingredients:
1 Tuscanini focaccia bread
2-3 tablespoons oil, for frying
½ red onion
4 tablespoons garlic aioli
1 package sliced pastrami, roughly chopped
2 tablespoons of your favorite BBQ sauce
Directions:
1. Heat the oil in a Betty Crocker, lined with parchment paper.
2. Using a potato peeler, peel thin slices of the onion into the hot oil (super hack for quick sliced onions!).
3. Fry the onion slices until slightly browned. Move them to the side of the Betty Crocker.
4. Place the focaccia bread face down into the Betty. Cook for 2-3 minutes until golden. Flip the focaccia. Smear garlic mayo in a thin layer on top.
5. In a small bowl combine the chopped pastrami with the barbeque sauce. Evenly spread the pastrami mixture on top of the garlic mayo.
6. Close the lid of the Betty Crocker and bake for about 4-5 minutes. Slice and serve.
Soft caramelized Chicken Marsala on a well-toasted panini creates the ultimate combination that is definitely worth trying. If you don’t have any Panini on hand, you can make just the chicken with a side of rice or noodles. Enjoy!
Ingredients:
1 lb. chicken cutlets, cut into large pieces
½ cup flour
½ cup corn starch
½ teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon black pepper
3-4 tablespoons oil, for frying
1 white onion, diced
8 oz can sliced mushrooms
¼ cup Marsala or white cooking wine
1½ cup chicken soup (or water mixed with 1 Tbsp chicken soup mix)
4 Tuscanini Paninis, opened and toasted face-up according to package instructions
Directions
1. Head the oil in your Betty Crocker (you can line it with parchment paper for easy cleanup). Keep the lid closed.
2. Meanwhile, in a ziploc bag, combine the flour, corn starch, salt and pepper. Shake the chicken pieces until fully coated.
3. Add the chicken pieces to the hot oil and fry for approximately 2-3 minutes on each side until slightly golden. Remove the chicken from oil and place in a plate. Set aside.
4. In the same Betty Crocker, sauté the onions until golden for about 10 minutes. Add more oil if necessary. Add the sliced mushrooms and sauté until soft for about 5-7 minutes.
5. Pour in the wine and chicken soup and bring to a boil. Stir in the chicken and simmer for 5-10 minutes, or until sauce has melded into the chicken.
6. To serve, spoon the warm chicken marsala mixture over the toasted paninis. Enjoy!
Leftovers are the best. They challenge you to get creative, and the most delicious things come out of it. One example: is this super spicy, super flavorful loaded Panini. Yum..
Components:
Tuscanini Paninis, toasted according to package instructions
Leftover grilled chicken or meat, cut into slices
Chunky Chipotle Pickle Mayo-see recipe
Red onions, thinly sliced
Lettuce of your choice
Sandwich-style sliced hot peppers
Directions:
Assemble the sandwich by spreading a layer of the Chipotle pickle mayo. Then top with lettuce, sliced chicken or meat, sliced onions, and hot peppers. Enjoy!
Tip: You can easily rewarm and crisp up the chicken/meat in a Betty Crocker.
Ingredients:
1 egg
1 cup canola oil
½ teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon freshly cracked black pepper
2 cloves garlic
1-2 tablespoons Tuscanini chopped Calabrian Chili or red pepper flakes
1 sour pickle, finely chopped
1-2 tablespoons pickle juice
Directions:
1. In a medium container, add the egg, oil, salt, black pepper, garlic, and chili pepper. Use an immersion blender to carefully pulse until a stiff mayonnaise consistency forms.
2. Add the chopped pickle and pickle juice. Stir to combine. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

QI constantly find that my fingers are swollen to the point that I cannot put my rings on and I oftentimes have a heavy puffiness under my eyes. I am assuming that this is water retention and my question is, can I help myself naturally?
AWhat you are describing does sound like water retention. Firstly, please make an appointment at your doctor to understand what the underlying cause of your water retention is as the course of treatment will depend on the underlying condition.
Water retention, also known as edema, is a condition where excess fluid builds up in the body's tissues, leading to swelling and weight fluctuations. While it is a common occurrence, particularly among women, it can be confusing and frustrating, especially when it leads to sudden weight gain or hampers weight loss efforts.
Water retention occurs when the body's fluid balance is disrupted, causing fluid to accumulate in the tissues rather than being excreted through urine. Several factors can contribute to this imbalance:
1. Hormonal Fluctuations: Hormones like estrogen and progesterone can affect fluid balance, which is why many women experience water retention during the different stages of their life.
2. Diet: High sodium intake is one of the most common dietary causes of water retention. Sodium binds with water in the body and helps maintain the balance of fluids inside and outside of cells. When sodium levels are too high, the body retains more water to dilute the sodium, leading to swelling.
3. Physical Inactivity: Prolonged periods of sitting or standing can lead to fluid pooling in the lower extremities due to gravity. This is why people who sit for long periods may notice swelling in their legs and feet.
4. Medical Conditions: Certain medical conditions, such as heart failure, kidney disease, and liver cirrhosis, can cause water retention by impairing the body’s ability to regulate fluid balance. In these cases, the underlying condition needs to be managed to address the edema.
5. Medications: Some medications, including corticosteroids, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and certain blood pressure medications, can cause the body to retain water as a side effect.
Several body systems are involved in maintaining fluid balance:
1. Kidneys: The kidneys play a crucial role in regulating the amount of water and salt in the body. They filter excess fluid and
waste from the blood, excreting it as urine. When kidney function is impaired, water can accumulate in the body.
2. Lymphatic System: This system helps remove excess fluid from tissues and returns it to the bloodstream. If the lymphatic system is compromised (e.g., due to lymphedema or after surgery), fluid can build up in the tissues.
3. Heart: The heart pumps blood throughout the body, and if it is not functioning properly (as in heart failure), blood can back up in the veins, leading to fluid accumulation, especially in the legs, ankles, and lungs.
4. Liver: The liver produces proteins that help regulate fluid balance in the bloodstream. Liver disease can disrupt this process, leading to fluid accumulation in the abdomen (ascites) and other areas. Water retention occurs when there is an imbalance between the forces that move fluid into and out of the tissues. Normally, the body maintains a delicate balance of fluids through a combination of pressure inside blood vessels, the osmotic pressure exerted by proteins and the function of the lymphatic system. When any of these factors are disrupted, fluid can leak into the surrounding tissues and cause swelling.
Water retention can cause swelling in various parts of the body, including:
1. Legs, Ankles, and Feet: The lower extremities are particularly susceptible to swelling, especially after long periods of standing or sitting.
2. Hands and Fingers: Rings may feel tight, and fingers may appear swollen due to fluid retention.
3. Abdomen: In conditions like liver disease or certain gastrointestinal disorders, fluid can accumulate in the abdomen, leading to a swollen or bloated appearance.
4. Face: Swelling in the face, particularly around the eyes, can occur due to fluid retention, especially in the morning after lying down all night.
The body can naturally resolve water retention once the underlying cause is addressed. Here are some ways it can happen:
1. Improved Circulation: Physical activity, such as walking or leg exercises, can help
improve circulation and reduce swelling in the lower extremities by encouraging fluid to return to the bloodstream.
2. Reduced Sodium Intake: Lowering sodium intake helps the kidneys excrete excess sodium and water, reducing swelling. Fixing your diet and avoiding salts can help out here.
3. Elevating the Affected Area: Elevating swollen limbs above the level of the heart can help fluid drain back into the circulatory system.
4. Diuretics: These medications help the body get rid of excess fluid by increasing urine production. However, they should only be used under medical supervision. To address your question: Can you heal water retention nutritionally? Yes, dietary changes can play a significant role in managing and preventing water retention:
1. Reduce Sodium Intake: Limiting sodium is crucial. Opt for fresh, whole foods, and avoid processed foods that are often high in sodium.
2. Increase Potassium-Rich Foods: Potassium helps counterbalance sodium and can help reduce water retention. Foods rich in potassium include bananas, avocados, tomatoes, and leafy greens.
3. Stay Hydrated: Paradoxically, drinking plenty of water can help reduce water retention. When the body is dehydrated, it tends to hold on to water. Staying hydrated helps the kidneys flush out excess sodium and water.
4. Eat More Fiber: A diet high in fiber supports digestive health and can help reduce bloating and water retention, particularly in the abdominal area.
5. Include Anti-Inflammatory Foods: Foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids (like salmon and flaxseeds), as well as fruits and vegetables high in antioxidants, can help reduce inflammation, which is often associated with water retention.
While it can be uncomfortable and cause weight fluctuations, understanding the causes and taking steps to manage it—such as through dietary changes and lifestyle adjustments—can significantly alleviate symptoms. If water retention persists or is accompanied by other symptoms, it’s important to seek medical advice to rule out any serious underlying conditions.

It is hard to imagine a world without Refuah Helpline. Whenever a medical issue arises, Yidden know where they can turn to, and on whom they can fully rely to guide and support them until they see a refuah shleimah BEZ”H.
But it wasn’t always this way. 30 years ago, a modest mission was launched, one that has over the years grown to become the extended family of every patient, moving heaven and earth to ensure the best available care and standing beside them diligently until their ordeal is complete BEZ”H.
This week, the organization is celebrating this milestone by recommitting itself further to Klal Yisroel, and by inviting the community to step up and partake in its annual fundraising event towards this mission — donating millions of dollars in support of these vital year-round efforts.
The cost of Refuah Helpline’s unparalleled and unyielding devotion is great, and it is wholly dependent on the community contributing their fair share. As one of the leading raisers told us, “this isn’t just Refuah Helpline’s mission, it belongs to all of us!”
This year’s campaign will also see the launch of a first-of-its-kind initiative uniting the many raisers in a way that will go even further on behalf of Cholei Yisroel. KapitelA-Day will see each raiser take upon
themselves a perek in Tehillim that they will recite every single day, and together see the entire Tehillim completed thousands of times throughout the year ahead.
The truth is that this has long been a part of how Refuah Helpline operates, with the case workers and other staff complementing their far-reaching efforts with the power of tefilah. The organization has always gone all the way for every patient — whether it’s a transfer or a transplant, an emergency procedure or an experimental trial, or anything a patient may need — but truly powering impactful results requires the one tool that our nation has always been able to rely on.
The campaign organizers report that the community, from major philanthropists to grassroots donors, is already showing its eagerness to do their part during the precampaign period — with much more yet to come.
The campaign will culminate this upcoming Tuesday and Wednesday, (Sep. 10 and 11), with tens of thousands of individual donors helping the organization reach its multimillion dollar goal so that they can meet their annual budget demands.
To do your part, visit Charidy.com/Refuah or call 845.606.9222 and submit your donation.

One of the laws of war is the prohibition against cutting down fruit trees of the enemy. This teaches us not to destroy useful items for no reason.
The Jewish people were on their way to war against an enemy. They needed to set up a base and camp. One young soldier, Shlomo, wanted to help with the war effort. He looked around for what he could do. Noticing a vineyard at the edge of the main city, he had an idea. “I’ll set fire to the vineyard! This will set the city’s soldiers back and make it easier to capture the city!” He went off to find his friend Moshe to help. When Moshe heard the plan, he looked horrified. “We can’t do that! There’s a Mitzvah not to cut down the fruit trees of our enemies!” Shlomo suddenly remembered. “Thank you for reminding me, otherwise I would’ve made a mistake.”
What is one way to be careful not to waste food or other materials for no reason?
In giving us this Mitzvah, the Torah teaches us that we may not destroy useful resources such as fruit trees for no reason. In the context of war, this includes not destroying such trees just to scare the enemy. If there is a situation when there is a need to cut them down, there is room for doing so. But doing so needlessly is in opposition to what Hashem wants of us. This idea applies especially to a fruit tree (even one that is simply growing in your yard) since the fruits growing on it provide an additional level of sustenance. But the same concept also applies to any sort of materials we interact with. The Torah tells us that it is not ok to ruin or destroy anything that has use, also known as the Mitzvah of Bal Tashchis.
Use dark green cardstock. Draw a large squiggly shape. Fold and make a few cuts in the middle. Cut out the middle up to the line you drew.
On the lightest shade of cardstock, draw a cityscape as shown. Layer all the papers together, with the lightest on the bottom and the darkest on top.
Now, place stickers on the back of the trees, starting with the smallest, and then match the greens while sticking them onto the picture.
Place the cut-out on top of the next lighter shade, and trace the same shape but smaller. Proceed to cut out the middle in the same manner.
Draw two trees of each color on green paper, cut them out, and set them aside. The biggest tree should be the darkest green, the middle-sized tree a lighter green, and the smallest trees an even lighter green.
Your Cityscape Orchard Decoupage looks stunning and is ready to be displayed on your favorite wall!
Repeat step 2 with the following 2 lighter sheets, each time drawing the shape slightly smaller.
Place the city paper in front of you. Take the darker shade, flip it, place 8 foam stickers on the corners and sides, then stick it on top of the city paper. Repeat for the other shades.
