NINE A.M. IS A COMPLETELY FICTIONAL STORY WHICH TAKES PLACE FIFTY YEARS AFTER THE HOLOCAUST.
RECAP OF CHAPTER 34: Binyamin tries, unsuccessfully, to find the medical record from his father’s last hospitalization. Elkovitz, Sherer’s son-in-law, notices but tells Binyamin he’ll keep quiet about it. Dena calls her mother and tells her about her low mood. Worried, her mother decides to call Dena’s mother-in-law and tell her about it.
CHAPTER THIRTY FIVE
Excerpted from “The Kindergarten Book”: There was a father and mother who lived in Eretz Yisrael, and they had three children. The father went to learn Torah every day in the Beis Hamikdash, and the mother prepared food for the children who came home each day from their kindergarten and ate happily. (Surele F.)
The non-Jewish Hauptmanns did not come to tell them what to do. They would go all day to pick flowers for Shabbos, and they also gave them out to the poor neighbors, so they should be happy. (Chana R.)
Once, a heavy snow fell, and no flowers grew. Outside it was cold, but the children and their father and mother had heavy, thick blankets and lots of clothes that Moshiach gave them all. No one was cold. (Dror E.)
“It’s really nice.” Binyamin closed the thick notebook, whose pages were tied together with a colorful, curly ribbon. “You wrote a whole story together?”
“Each one of the children contributed a sentence when it was their turn,” Naomi said. She was sitting on a small chair in the corner of the clinic. “We made a few rounds, until the whole story came together. Don’t ask, it went through a bunch of different versions of really captivating plots… I just hope the kids won’t talk about it too much outside, and that they have enough brains to realize it’s not a good idea for the Nazis to read the story. There
are a lot of expressions about wanting to get out of here, and to see the beautiful world.”
“And if they do hear about it?”
“So they’ll hear.”
“And let’s say they want to read it?”
“Let them read it. After all, these are children’s fantasies. There’s no violation of the laws here… I’ll leave it here—I’m sure you’ll enjoy it. Just take good care of it, of course, and give it back to me when you go home.”
Binyamin placed the book next to his pillow, but after thinking for a moment, he handed it back to his sister.
“I brought it for you to read!” she exclaimed, sounding almost insulted. “I thought things like this interest you.”
“It’s not that,” he said. “It really is interesting. More than interesting—it’s very impressive. On the day that I fell, I heard in the factory that the children from the preschool put paper flowers near the door of all the residents of the camp every Thursday.”
“You never saw that for yourself?”
“No… When did it start?”
“Really, only the last two weeks.”
“I’ve been coming home very late recently,” he whispered. “Apparently, the flowers were inside everyone’s houses already.”
“The story was written following an ‘Eretz Yisrael’ game that we played in class,” his sister explained as she took the notebook
back. “Then I decided to turn our reality into a much brighter fantasy. With children, it’s very easy.”
Binyamin looked at her seriously. “I want you to take very good care of this notebook, in your house. And if someone asks you about it, say that it got lost and you have no idea where it is. Don’t let any Gefreiter, or someone of a higher rank, see it, you hear?”
“I hear, my older, smarter brother. But can I know what you are so afraid of?”
“That what happened to Tatte shouldn’t happen again.” He sighed. “It’s true that if I’m right, and he really wrote something terrible that they didn’t like, it wasn’t as innocent as a children’s story. But still, you should always know that you can never be too cautious in this place.”
“Do you mean Tatte’s notebooks?” “Yes.”
“But you didn’t find anything special there!”
“That’s right. And I don’t want them to find anything with you either.”
She nodded, a gleam of fear in her eyes. She wasn’t sure she fully understood what he was talking about. She wanted to ask, but just then Dr. Katzburg appeared. “Okay, Naomi, out you go,” she said in a friendly tone. “Your grandmother did not arrange rest for your brother so that people should come and disturb him, right? So please, go now; tomorrow he’ll be going home and you can visit him whenever you want.”
Naomi waved to Binyamin, and without a word, she hurried out of the infirmary, tightly clutching her notebook. Binyamin remained in bed, thinking. He had one last night here.
He’d been resting and resting for four whole days, and only at night did he methodically go through all the drawers, one by one. David Elkovitz sat next to his baby daughter’s bed, completely ignoring what Binyamin was doing, as if they had signed some invisible agreement.
He didn’t find a thing, and that was very strange. His father was definitely hospitalized here before his passing, and it wasn’t possible that with all the perfect organization that reigned here, documents should disappear.
If only he could use these last few hours here to continue his search!
But this morning, two new pneumonia patients had been admitted, and it would not be safe to search for his father’s card in their presence.
Besides, if he didn’t count the locked cabinets that he had no access to, there didn’t seem to be a corner in the infirmary that he hadn’t searched. What more could he do?
Two hours after Naomi left, night fell, and the infirmary was dark. The wife of one of the patients also left, and only Babbe stood near the open door, leaning on the wall as her eyes studied the place. Binyamin stood up to daven Maariv and then washed his hands and ate supper.
“Binyamin.” Babbe walked over to him, “I’m going home soon.”
“Great. Thanks for everything, Babbe. Have a good night.”
“You too. The two new patients here got sleeping pills, so they should be sleeping deeply for at least the next six hours.”
Her grandson raised his eyes for a moment, and then quickly lowered them. What was Babbe—
“And I’m considering giving you a sleeping pill as well. Not that we have a lot, but for very severe cases, when the body needs absolute rest to overcome an infection, it’s vital. And I’m wondering if you are not classified as a severe case whose body is not able to overcome the curiosity virus, and that’s why it’s not listening to the responsible voice of reason.”
“Babbe…” Binyamin began..
“What did you think? That we leave the patients here alone all these hours? We have permits to be outside so we can check on our patients. And as the oldest person on staff, who doesn’t sleep so well, or for too long at a time, I’m the one who comes most nights, twice a night, to look through the window so I can make sure everything is in order.”
For a fraction of a second, Binyamin glanced at the window on the other end of the room.
“And besides, I’m just wondering about your lack of caution. How do you allow yourself to rummage and search and open closets and drawers, when someone can come at any minute and see you through the window?”
“There’s a curfew at night,” he murmured.
“I told you, the medical personnel have permission to come here.” She lowered her voice: “And because I saw that you accepted my orders—to rest—too easily, I took upon myself this shift four days ago. The situation here didn’t need more than that. I saw that you managed fine with Elkovitz, but tonight, Dr. Katzburg will be coming at least once to check the condition of the new patients, and so, your secret searches are hereby over. Otherwise, I won’t let you go to shul to daven with a minyan in the morning, like I did the other days. Tonight you’re going to sleep and nothing else—is that clear?”
“It’s clear.”
“With a pill?”
“No need.” He knew defeat when he saw it.
“Well, I don’t have any left anyway.”
Babbe gave a half smile, but then grew serious again. “And in order that you shouldn’t feel that it’s a terrible waste of time to sleep, instead of using every last minute for desperate searches, I want to tell you that your father’s card is long not here.”
Binyamin was sure that he would not be able to fall asleep after this piercing conversation, but surprisingly he did, and he slept well, making up for the other sleepless nights he’d had. ***
Despite the marked differences in their mentalities, Dena’s mother liked her Viennese mechuteiniste a lot.
“What a wonderful daughter you have!” Mrs. Hanter senior exclaimed now. “So refined, so good-natured and pleasant… the two of us should always have lots of nachas from her and Bentzy!”
“Amen, amen,” Mrs. Weiss murmured.
“It’s wonderful that you called so that I could tell this to you.”
“Yes, yes…and I wanted to speak about something else, too,” Dena’s mother said, clearing her throat. “It’s a delicate subject, and it’s not so comfortable to speak about…but I think it’s important.”
“Yes?” Mrs. Hanter sat up straighter and raised her eyebrows.
“Dena’s mood.”
“She’s always a bit on the quieter side,
isn’t she?”
“That’s just it—no, she’s not… Please don’t get me wrong; I’m sure you are doing everything for them. Dena told me what a wonderful shvigger you are, and how much her kids love you. You really are investing so much effort into them, and are doing so much. But Dena still is not comfortable there in Vienna.”
At the last moment, she swallowed the words “by you.”
“You know, I’ve noticed. I actually helped her meet a new friend. I think it’s very important for a young woman to have friends her age.”
“It certainly is. Thank you for that.” Mrs. Weiss thought about what to say next.
“Maybe we can find other ways…? She’s really…lonely there.” What an awkward conversation! Good thing Mrs. Hanter really was a kindhearted woman.
“Do you think it bothered her that I sent over a cake for Duvi’s birthday?”
“Oh, no, she mentioned how happy she was that you did that.”
“So what does she want?”
Were the reserves of patience that Dena’s shvigger had running low?
“She wants to find her purpose in life.”
“What?”
Mrs. Weiss nearly swallowed her tongue.
“Oh, that’s just an expression in our house—we use it when someone is walking around unhappy and doesn’t know what is bothering him or what to do to resolve the problem.”
“So it’s up to her, you mean?”
“Of course it’s also up to her. But on the other hand, I think that maybe it is possible to help her. She is still young and doesn’t always know how to help herself.”
“We’ll think of something,” her mechuteiniste promised. “We’ll think together what it is that she really wants, and how we can make her happy. I’ll tell my son this, too.”
Dena’s mother had a few ideas about what would make Dena happy and help her realize her dreams, but she kept them to herself. And not only because the three minutes she had allotted for this phone call were up.

MY BUBBY’S POTATO SALAD
A big thanks to my mother for measuring a Hungarian recipe and putting it down on paper. This recipe is a family classic, something that was passed down and mastered by grandmothers and aunts.
Ingredients:
6 medium- large Idaho potatoes
1 small green pepper
1 small onion
2 regular sized carrots
8 small kosher dill gherkins
1/2 cup pickle juice
1/4 cup+ 2 Tbsp vinegar
2 Tbsp kosher salt
1 cup mayonnaise
Directions:
1. Cook potatoes whole with peel on until fork tender. When slightly cooled but still warm, remove peel with your hands. Cube and add to a large bowl.
2. Using the S-blade of your food processor, add green pepper and chop until fine. Add to bowl with potatoes.
3. Repeat with onion, carrots and pickles. Chop separately and add it to the bowl.
4. Add remaining ingredients to bowl and mix well.
5. As it sits, the potatoes absorb the flavors. Enjoy room temperature or cold.
Note: This is a big batch, perfect for a large family or family gathering.
Potato salad can last in the fridge for up to a week.

Ingredients:
1 cup barley
1 cup navy beans or cholent beans
3/4 Tbsp kosher salt

Deckle squares
Eggs
Cubed potatoes
Marrow bones
Kishka
Jachnun

3. If using a crockpot: Let cook on low until Shabbos morning.
4. If baking in oven: Bake on 200° overnight.

46 POWER TO BE

Recap: Mrs. Gordon tells her sister-in-law Devorah that Mr. Seidman discovered that she plans on leaving her job. Devorah doesn’t know what to say.
After their outing to the ice cream store, the four eighth-graders walk home together. Tzippy is dropped off first. Mali and Bruchi end up walking by themselves, and Bruchi impulsively invites Mali to her home for a snack. Perry is shocked to find her sister partying and tells Bruchi so. Bruchi tells Perry to leave her alone and let her deal with it in her own way.
That night, Mrs. Gordon tries to figure out what her next step should be. Her husband points out that they need to ask a shaila before doing anything.
CHAPTER 46
Mrs. Gordon checked her watch.
“Do you think we can call now?”
“Yes, it should be fine,” Nachman began to say, but as he finished speaking, the phone rang.
Mrs. Gordon picked up.
“Hi, Shaina, Devorah here, I just had to call you right now because I feel so bad.”
“What happened?” Shaina asked, her stomach squeezing. Changing jobs was turning out to be even more stressful than being an overworked principal. Maybe shaking up the status quo wasn’t the greatest idea.
“I told my boss right away what you told me, that it isn’t final anymore because of this whole sticky situation.
And he said-“
“What did he say?”
“He feels really bad, but he was probably the one to leak
it,” Devorah said.
“But I thought you said you made it clear to him that it was confidential!”
“Right, it’s not like he went around announcing it to people. There was one administrator of a school that we work in that gave my boss a lot of information about you, before you even came down to an interview. That administrator knows Mr. Seidman really well. So a few days ago, when my boss was speaking to this administrator again, he told him that by the way, we ended up hiring you.”
“Ahhh,” Shaina said, as the story’s pieces clicked into place. “I guess he didn’t tell this administrator to keep it a secret from Mr. Seidman?”
“I’m not sure, but either way, I really feel bad that this happened, and that you ended up in such a tight spot.”
“It’s okay,” Shaina said.
There was a moment of silence.
“So what will you do now?” Devorah wanted to know.
“I’m thinking about it,” Shaina said. “As soon as I know, I’ll let you know.”
They hung up soon after.
“So now what’s going on?” Nachman said, his hand on his forehead in an exaggeratedly overwhelmed pose.
“Sounds like Devorah’s boss was the one who let the cat out of the bag,” Shaina said. She ran her finger around the phone’s rim. “He told another administrator, who knows Mr. Seidman really well, that he hired me for this job.”
“But didn’t you clearly tell Devorah that this was confidential until you could break it to Mr. Seidman yourself?”
“Yes, I did, which is why Devorah didn’t stop saying how she feels so bad.”
“I just wonder if that changes anything.”
“What do you mean?”
“If we’re asking a shaila about keeping your commitment to them, and they already broke the commitment by telling over confidential information, then that sounds like a different story.”
“You think?”
“Only one way to find out,” Nachman said, and he took the phone from Shaina.
Glancing up at the clock to make sure it was still a good time to call, he dialed the number of the rav they’d just consulted a few days before. It was time to ask again.
Now that it was the night before his long-awaited bail hearing, and Mr. Kleinberg knew there was no way he was going to sleep a wink that night, he welcomed Casey’s restless talk.
“Boiling hot, this place,” Casey grumbled.
“Put in a request for air conditioning,” Mr. Kleinberg mumbled.
“What did you say?”
Even though Mr. Kleinberg had gotten used to Casey’s overbearing presence in his cell, he was still unsure what would set Casey off.
Warily, he repeated, “You could put in a request for air conditioning.”
Casey grimaced. “Was that supposed to be a joke?”
Mr. Kleinberg didn’t say anything.
“You should have tried the air conditioning in my Audi,” Casey said. “All-cash deal. I bought that car straight off the dealer’s lot. Ever drove an Audi yourself?”
“No,” Mr. Kleinberg said. He drove expensive, but less flashy cars.
“I had a whole garage of cars,” Casey said, and his eyes sparkled. He had obviously forgotten about the heat.
“Audi. BMW. Also a Tesla.”
“Did you like the Tesla?”
“Yeah, except the tech part was a little shady. I mean like I wouldn’t want someone tracking me through the screen, ya know what I mean? Tesla wasn’t for a guy like me. I was going to sell it after my birthday.”
Casey paused and looked a little more closely at Mr. Kleinberg.
“Aren’t you part of all that? Using tech to follow people and steal their information?”
“No, it wasn’t me,” Mr. Kleinberg said. “It wasn’t my fault!”
“Oh, be quiet,” Casey waved his hand. “You told me all that baloney already. Tell me the truth, what was it all about?”
A strange thought struck Mr. Kleinberg as he wondered if Casey wasn’t really
“HE’D FORGOTTEN WHO MADE EVERYTHING HAPPEN AND HAD RELIED INSTEAD ON ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AND HIS OWN SMARTS.”
investments became much more profitable, and we were able to point that to the AI’s advice.”
“You took advice from a machine where to put your money?” Casey shook his head. “Sounds crazy to me.”
When Mr. Kleinberg didn’t respond, Casey said, “If you didn’t make the AI, why are they blaming you that it was no good?”
“I became an expert in how to use it,” Mr. Kleinberg said. “I used it also for personal, and I started giving people advice on how to use it to become richer. Also, the bank became famous, and other banks had to start using the AI too. Lots of them came to ask me for advice on how to use it properly.”
“Really?” Casey asked. This story, a story of coming to power, fascinated him. “So what went wrong?”
“At some point, people realized that the system was collecting and using information without permission. Also, the original data that they used to train the AI was stolen, or illegal to use this way, or both. I’m not even sure myself.”
A lot of the details of the case had only become clear to Mr. Kleinberg in the long discussions with his lawyer about the case. Before, he’d been pretty sketchy on what exactly the case against him was based on.
“You didn’t know any of this before?” Casey asked.
Mr. Kleinberg didn’t respond.
“Pleading the fifth?” Casey said. When Mr. Kleinberg still didn’t respond, he seemed to lose interest, and stretched himself across his bunk again.
a drug lord at all. Perhaps the police had only planted Casey in his cell to get more information out of Mr. Kleinberg? He shook that crazy thought away. This was twenty-first century America. That tactic surely wasn’t in use anymore, and either way, there was no way a guy like Casey was staying in a cell if he wasn’t jailed in it.
“I was just the bank manager,” Mr. Kleinberg said slowly. “The people at Finance2 promoted their program as being most helpful for bank investments. So we installed the AI, and we saw a real difference. The bank’s
But apparently, he hadn’t given up on a conversation, because from his prone position, he said, “Don’t you religious guys believe in hell? You call it gegehennom, I think?”
“Right,” Mr. Kleinberg said, slowly.
“So aren’t you afraid of that? I mean like, you’re being all lily-white here, but you obviously did something pretty bad and hurt lots of people. Aren’t you afraid of being punished?”
Mr. Kleinberg stiffened as the words hit their mark.
In his wildest dreams, he could never have imagined getting mussar from a Jewish drug lord in a jail cell. But Casey’s words reverberated, accusing him over and over.

“You know,” Casey said, “I was never scared of the police. I knew I’m smarter than them, and if they happen to catch me, well, I know my way around.”
He said this casually, as if it was obvious to anyone involved.
“But you got so much more to be scared of up there.”
Mr. Kleinberg was silent.
Could this, then, be why he was sent to this jail cell? So he would realize Who truly held all the Power and determined his fate as well?
Apparently, he’d needed a lesson in that.
“Yes,” he said aloud.
He checked his watch, then took out the small siddur that had made it into his jail cell along with his tallis and tefillin.
Casey turned to look at him.
“You’re praying again?”
“You know I pray three times a day,” Mr. Kleinberg reminded him.
Casey made an inarticulate noise in his throat.
“Will it bother you if I pray now?” Mr. Kleinberg asked solicitously.
“Nah, go ahead and pray. You sure need all the prayers you can get!” Casey guffawed.
Mr. Kleinberg opened his siddur to Maariv, then looked back up at Casey.
“Hey, do you want me to pray for you too?” he suddenly asked.
Casey’s eyes flew open. “For me?” he asked. “You think prayers would work for someone like me?”
“Prayer work for everyone,” Mr. Kleinberg said.
“Hey, if you say so.”
“What’s your Jewish name?”
“Tzvi. Tzvi Hersh.”
It was strange hearing Casey pronounce his Jewish name confidently and proudly. Strange and sad.
“And what’s your mother’s name?”
“Natalie.”
“So Tzvi Hersh ben Natalie is your full Jewish name, then.”
“If you say so.” Casey had lost interest.
Mr. Kleinberg began davening Maariv, but it wasn’t like any tefillah he’d ever davened in the past.
Before he’d landed in jail, tefillos for him were an obligation to be checked off his daily list.
Even in jail, he’d mumbled his tefillos, feeling too lost to daven properly.
As his moment of truth drew nearer, something opened up in Mr. Kleinberg’s stony heart.
The humbling experiences he’d undergone every second of every hour since he’d ended up in jail each made their impression on him, until Casey’s words now struck the final blow and smashed his heart open.
Now he realized exactly where he’d gone wrong, and it had nothing to do with Finance2 or AI.
His mistake was far more fundamental than that.
He’d forgotten Who made everything happen and had relied instead on artificial intelligence and his own smarts.
How could he have been so foolish?
As he stood up to daven, his head was
bowed and he davened with a broken heart.
Whatever happened tomorrow at the bail hearing, he would know Who was the One truly pulling the strings.
•••
Night grew heavier and darker on the city, and in most houses, everyone was asleep.
In the Kleinberg house, none of the inhabitants were sleeping.
Much like the father of the household, his family members knew that this wasn’t a night that they would be able to fall asleep.
Mrs. Kleinberg had taken to spending the night on a recliner since her husband’s arrest.
Bruchi tried her best to fall asleep in bed, but she found that no music or book could soothe her.
And especially Perry, the sensitive soul who felt her father’s pain so acutely. She was rolled up in a ball on the plush throw rug in her room, the Tehillim she’d been whispering from all night stuck somewhere in her skirt as she laid one cheek on her knees.
Curled up as she was, it appeared that she was dozing off, but if you looked closely at her lips, you’d see them moving.
Please Hashem, help my father get bail tomorrow, she was mouthing, in the plainest words she knew.
And when she felt a certain peacefulness settle over her, she finally relaxed. It would be good. •

As each school year started, Rav Avrohom Pam would make a lechaim in his office as a zechus that Jewish children in public school should switch to yeshivos, and that those who made the move should succeed.
This year, Rav Pam's yahrzeit, 28 Av, is just as public schools are beginning – with thousands of Jewish children in attendance.

S S STRATEGIES FOR OPTIMUM SUCCESS
Nechama W. is old enough to be entering shidduchim – but the thought makes her mother Mirel shudder in fear. Mirel’s fears are well grounded. Nechama is bright, attractive, and good-hearted; but she seems to be missing a certain touch.
“It’s hard to describe exactly what’s wrong,” Mirel said to me. “It’s very subtle. She doesn’t have a natural sense about how to behave around people. She can ask embarrassing questions, or not notice when someone wants to end the conversation. I hate to say this about my daughter, but she somehow irks people and gets on their nerves. And she’s totally unaware of it.” Mirel paused, and I could hear her pain in the silence.
“I can’t let her start shidduchim like this. It’s not going to work!” Mirel went on to tell me what a wonderful girl Nechama is.
“She’s a gem. She’s so giving and intelligent; she’d make a wonderful wife and mother. I so badly want to see her get the shidduch she deserves.”
Nechama is one of countless singles whose shidduch prospects are being limited by a lack of social skills. Such skills run the gamut from communication skills and grooming to anger management and stress control. And while social skills
issues plague people of all ages, they are particularly damaging to singles on the shidduch scene.
The shidduch process is replete with innuendos and unspoken rules. How formal to act, how much to say, how to make appropriate eye contact – such nuances become all-important. Even the most socially-aware single has her social antennae set on high when she first meets a marriage prospect. But people like Nechama are missing the feelers so crucial to such a meeting. They may suffer from poor conversation skills, and not know how to keep a conversation going. They may not notice when their date is disinterested or uncomfortable with certain topics. Or they may phrase questions in a probing, accusatory manner. These behaviors do not stem from poor middos. They are simply a lack of social awareness and skills.
The fact is that our society expects children to learn social skills by instinct. We expect children to intuit thousands of unspoken rules, and to develop socially, just by being part of a social society. This works, with varying degrees of success, for most. But many children will “miss the boat”. These are the children who are too loud or too shy; the ones who don’t know when to stop talking or can’t keep a conversation going; the ones who

can’t read facial expressions and don’t make eye contact.
Often, poor social skills are interrelated with low self esteem. Low self esteem can cause social issues, because children who don’t feel confident don’t have as many opportunities for social interaction as others. Poor social skills can also cause low self esteem, because children who don’t behave properly are often snubbed or bullied.
Thankfully, social skills can be taught. Singles like Nechama can learn the unwritten shidduchrelated social rules. And more important, they can learn social skills that will carry them way beyond the shidduch scene, and bring them success in marriage life, business, and community. Shidduch-preparatory counseling teaches how to recognize nonverbal cues, respect personal space, communicate effectively, keep a conversation going, and more.
Not long ago, I counseled a twenty year old girl who told me she would never get married. She had suffered through years of being the class ‘neb’, and had an extremely negative self-perception. It took just a few sessions to reveal the charming bright girl beneath the “nebby” façade. Within a few months, she was more self confident, and comfortable enough
about her social skills to listen to shidduchim. In a very short while, she got engaged to a wonderful boy. She credits her new social skills with getting her to this milestone.
“I feel like a new person,” she said. Her mother says that it is like someone turned the light on in her daughter’s life.
“She sees things she never saw before. She is attuned to other people’s reactions. She looks straight at you when she talks. I never would have believed that these changes were possible.”
Change is possible, even for people lacking very serious social skills, such as anger management. Anger is one of the most destructive forces in marriage, and very often, parents are aware of an anger problem in their children. Sadly, parents are not always desperate to treat such issues; first, because they may see it as a sporadic problem that crops up only on rare occasions; and second, because they don’t know that anger management can be taught.
But teaching anger management is the greatest contribution a parent can make to a child’s shalom bayis and to the lives of the couple and their future children.
Singles may struggle with other issues, such as the arts of conversation, compromise, and communication. The truth is that these skills are vital to people of all ages. But when it comes to shidduchim, a lack in any of these areas becomes highlighted, because they affect the dating process.
One young lady said that she couldn’t meet another shidduch prospect, because she always got stuck in conversation. In counseling, she learned how to maintain give and take, and move a conversation from Point A to Point B. She is now much more confident about her
ability to shine on a date.
Helping a Single who can’t Commit
Singles who repeatedly reject shidduchim may struggle with commitment avoidance. It may feel safer to say ‘no’ to a shidduch than to take the awesome step of proposing or accepting a proposal. Admittedly, choosing a marriage partner is the greatest commitment a person will make in life; but a person should have the emotional security to make this decision when the right person comes along.
“I deal with singles who get involved in shidduchim, and back out just when everyone thinks things are working well,” one shadchan told me. “One girl actually took a boy on an emotional roller coaster ride, where he would propose, and she would say ‘give me two months’, and then start over from square one. This went on for over a year. Eventually, he dropped her. She’s still single, only because she is afraid to make a commitment.”
“Sometimes, when a single hems and haws about the reason he or she is dropping the shidduch, I suspect that the problem has nothing to do with the person I set them up with,” the shadchan says. “They are just afraid to commit. It’s like something is holding them back.” She adds that the problem is common with both boys and girls.
“It’s an impossible struggle. I feel like I’m banging my head against a wall, because I don’t see a way out.”
The good news is that there often is a way out of the problem. Commitment avoidance often stems from insecurity. A person who is emotionally secure can generally trust his or her judgment and make important decisions; while a person who struggles with low self esteem is plagued with doubts, not only about a potential
shidduch, but also about his or her readiness for marriage.
Counseling is extremely beneficial to such singles. First and foremost, it can help people build the self esteem, and get rid of the negative perceptions that are crippling them. Then singles can be taught to recognize when they are rejecting a shidduch prospect on legitimate grounds, and when there are personal commitment issues standing in the way. They can also be guided through a particular shidduch, so that they can clearly judge the situation, and make the right decision.
Counseling has helped many singles with commitment avoidance take the crucial step to marriage.
Communication, Compromise, Grooming
There are many other issues that might necessitate preshidduch counseling. A lack in communication skills, and inability to compromise can make it very difficult for singles to successfully navigate the shidduch scene. They are even more detrimental in married life. Counseling can teach these skills.
Many singles need to learn proper grooming and hygiene. This may be somewhat baffling to parents who try to teach their children to tuck their shirts in, brush their teeth, clip their nails, and otherwise look neat and clean; to no avail.
But adult children may perceive their parents’ admonitions as nagging. They are generally more receptive to guidance they receive in counseling.
Parents who recognize such issues in their children, and take steps to correct them, are giving their children the most important gift possible. They are preparing them to reach their potential and be the very best shidduch prospects, spouses, and parents possible.

A
TRUE STORY AS TOLD TO ESTY STEINMETZ
Pirkei Avos 6, 1
Anyone who engages in the Torah for its own sake merits many things
Miriam:
When I gave birth to a son a year after my wedding, it heralded the start of a very joyous era, but it was slightly bittersweet. It meant that my husband had to leave kollel to support us, now that our expenses had increased exponentially, and I cut down on my hours.
When my husband accepted a job, I tried to smile but tears leaked out of my eyes instead. His first day on the job, I tried to sound encouraging as I wished him hatzlacha, but inside I felt hollow.
My brothers were all diligently learning in Lakewood yeshivos, while my husband went off to Manhattan every day, briefcase in hand. How would I build a home of Torah on such a foundation?
My husband was a good man. He got up early every morning to learn before he left for a long workday. He was usually out of the house from 7:00 AM to 8:00 PM.
Even after he was finally home, he would run back to his beloved gemara for a while before retiring for the night.
I knew this was the right thing at the time. But what could I do if inside, a longing for a home reverberating with the kol Torah still burned strong? How I yearned to give my husband warm words of encouragement as he went off to his chavrusa, and welcome him with a nourishing meal to have a part in his Torah. How I wished to tell my little son when he asked why Totty wasn’t home for bedtime, “Totty’s learning, tzaddikel.”
But Hashem had other plans for us.
As the family grew, my husband took on more hours of work to cover the rising expenses. He was sometimes out of the house for 20 consecutive hours. My dreams of a husband in kollel seemed to be drifting farther and farther away, slithering out of my reach.
Most of my friends in the same position seemed resigned. “This is our reality, so might as well enjoy it,” they reasoned. They learned to enjoy the liberty of having a little extra to spend without worrying about the rent. They looked forward to saving up enough to buy a house.
But these things didn’t speak to me. All I wanted was a
home of Torah.
Every Friday night, after I tzinded the lecht and murmured whispered tefillos for my children, for easy nachas, for health and peace and prosperity, I added a whisper, “Hashem, please help me build a home of Torah.”
Chany, Miriam’s daughter:
Growing up, we didn’t get to see my father much. I knew that he worked hard every day to support our family.
Every night, I eagerly waited for him to come home. I was ready for bed and in my room when he came in, tired lines etched on his face that would disappear the second I yelled Totty and threw myself into his arms.
He lovingly told me good night and tucked the blanket securely around my chin, and that was all I saw of him till the next night.
Shabbos was the highlight of the week. Totty was in a jovial mood, singing harmonious zemiros, telling dramatic stories about the Parshah, and listening to our anecdotes about school and cheder. After the suedah he played board games with us for hours until we were all in giggles. Most of my classmate’s fathers were also in the workforce. Only two of my classmates' fathers were still in kollel. My father earned enough to support our needs, but we always lived simply and frugally.
Mommy bought us new outfits when warranted, but without the whole excitement I witnessed by my friends. She had no joy from new clothing or other material things.
When I became a teenager, it sometimes bothered me, the way Mommy would flippantly remark that I should wear my outfit from last season, or get me only 4 outfits for camp while my friends bought at least seven.
But as I got older and matured, I learned to value Mommy’s
simplicity, her emphasis on what actually counts.
When it was time for shidduchim, I knew exactly what I wanted: someone who would learn as much and as long as possible.
Miriam:
The years felt like forever but passed in a heartbeat. First there were sticky puddles of ices on the speckled floor, and then shards of broken glass on shiny parquet. I couldn’t believe my son was a chassan.
My husband put in extra hours before the chasunah and B”H we pulled off a beautiful affair. The kallah was a wonderful girl. I felt a flutter of fear when I thought of my own daughter, who was almost in shidduchim.
I hoped that we would get suggestions for serious learning boys although my husband worked. I knew that was what my daughter wanted.
I needn’t have worried. Less than a year after my son’s chasunah, Chany got engaged to a wonderful bochur, a diligent masmid and baal middos extraordinaire. My next daughter followed a year later.
We found ourselves in constant simcha mode, always either planning a chasunah or recuperating from the expenses of the last one.
Our home was a happy place, filled with the laughter of the grandchildren as they chased each other around the house.
I was so happy, so fulfilled, yet that spark of longing still burned strongly.
It burned brightly every time my husband lovingly picked up a sefer and softly put it back on the shelf because it was late and he needed energy for work the following day.
I heard about yet another siyum my brother was making while my husband slaved over a computer every day. Not that I was jealous - I just wished the same for my
husband.
And as I lit the candles every week, after davening for my children and grandchildren, I said the words I had said so many times before, and had seen fulfilled in so many different ways, but that still bubbled in the deepest recesses of my heart: “Hashem, please help me build a true home of Torah.”
Chany:
When my fifth sibling got married, we all joked that the nest was 50% empty, and the second half always went faster than the first.
And it was true. When my youngest brother got engaged, we all started thinking about what my parents would do now. My mother hadn’t had a job in years, how would she fill her time now?
My mother reassured us that she would be plenty busy. “I’m used to it,” she explained. “Gedalya was in Yeshiva for the last few years, you know.”
But somehow, this felt different. At the mitzvah tantz, as all 10 brothers and brothers-in-laws held hands and danced with the chassan, we all wiped surreptitious tears from our eyes.
The chassan and kallah departed for their new future in a cloud of white lace and euphoria. And my parents gracefully departed for their now-empty home.
Miriam:
It was the first day after the whirlwind of sheva brachos and I was relaxing with a coffee, when the door suddenly opened. Maybe one of my daughters had popped in on her way to work?
“Good morning,” my husband’s booming voice rang out.
“Good morning!” I replied, dropping my coffee and watching a few drops settle on the glass surface. “What happened? Is everything okay?”
My husband casually dropped his tefillin bag and then looked me

in the eyes. “I gave notice at my job. I’m going back to kollel.”
I was too stunned to answer.
“B”H I married off all my children and repaid all my debts. Now I can finally sit in kollel all day and learn,” my husband calmly explained.
“Wow,” I said softly.
“That’s… I really have no words. That’s the nicest gift you could have given me.” My eyes filled with moisture and I smiled through my tears. Baruch shecheyanu vikiymanu lizman hazeh.
I felt so incredibly blessed, so surrounded by Hashem’s brachos. Now I truly had everything.
Chany:
When I heard that Totty had dropped his job and was back in kollel, I nearly dropped the mug I was washing. It had been over 30 years since he joined the workforce. Over 30 years of Mommy’s undying hope for this day. I couldn’t believe that her dream came true.
When I spoke to my father, he was like a new person. He had a new chiyus to him, a youthful vigor in his voice, a new sparkle in his eyes.
A few weeks later Mommy mentioned that she was making an early night, since Totty had to get up in a few hours.
She must have heard the curiosity in the sudden silence, though I didn’t ask, so she went on to explain.
“Totty lately gets up at twelve to learn, so he needs to go to sleep by seven.”
“You mean at midnight?” I asked in disbelief.
“Yes,” my mother confirmed. She said it so casually, like it was the most normal thing in the world, but I detected the pride and joy in the words.
I watched my parents with a mixture of pride and awe as they disproved all the empty-nest theories. Totty learned every spare minute, while Mommy visited assisted living facilities, older women in need of company, and anyone else in need of a kind word and smile.
A while later, my four-year-old son innocently remarked over supper, “Zeidy must be one of the lamed-vav tzaddikim, because he learns all day and all night.”
I smiled and ruffled his hair. “And Bobby is a lamed vav tzadeikes, right?”
He smiled happily. “When I’ll be big, I’ll also learn all day, just like Zeidy,” he announced before digging into his spaghetti.
I smiled, and a tear pricked my eye as I leaned over and squeezed him. He squirmed.
And when I tzinded licht that Friday night, I fervently whispered, “Hashem, please help me build a
It is not an exaggeration to say that the halachic sheilos that come up in a hospital setting number in the thousands. And the sheilos are as varied as they are numerous.
There are the many Shabbos concerns: how to call a nurse on Shabbos, adjust an electric bed, walk through automatic doors, use elevators and lights, etc. There are the hilchos tefillah considerations: when and how one may daven in a hospital room. There are the complicated halachos of a yoledes ; issues of bishul akum ; end-of-life situations; and so many other areas of halachah that are affected, for both patients and visitors in the hospital.
This sefer addresses all of these halachos, offering clarity and practical suggestions for those who find themselves in a medical situation.

BE FIT WITH BENEFIT
QThank you for your informative articles. Whenever I feed my kids eggs, they always leave over the yolk. My question is, is this a battle worth fighting, or will they be getting enough protein from the white part of the egg?
AI am sure that the many moms out there reading this article will nod along with your question.
As a simple estimate, children need approximately half their body weight as protein. This means a 24 pound two-year-old would need around 12 grams of protein per day. When we compare this to the 6 grams of protein that is packed into each egg, we can see how well eggs assist our kids in meeting their protein requirements. Additionally, eggs contain all 9 essential amino acids, making them one of the most cost-effective and efficient complete proteins you could offer.
It’s important to note egg yolks and egg whites offer different nutrients. In short, yes! The yolk is a very important component of your child’s meal! Make sure to eat the whole egg to set yourself up for success. Outlined below are some benefits of having the full egg:
1. Most of an egg’s nutrients are in the yolk. The yolk is packed with good-for-you nutrients including protein, essential fatty acids, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Egg yolks are also one of the few natural food sources of vitamin D.
2. Half of an egg’s protein is in the yolk. Two whole eggs provide you with 12 grams of protein. Recent research shows that we build more lean muscle and boost muscle strength more when we eat whole eggs instead of just the egg whites.
3. Egg yolks contain two antioxidants that are important for eye health: lutein and zeaxanthin. They’re highly available in egg yolks, meaning that your body will absorb
them easily. Studies have shown that both antioxidants may reduce the risk of macular degeneration, which contributes to vision loss as we age.
4. Egg yolks are one of the best food sources of choline, a B vitamin that is vital for brain development and function.
5. Eggs can boost the nutritional value of the veggies on your plate. That’s because the yolks help you absorb some of their nutrients, such as the vitamin E in spinach and beta-carotene in carrots.
If you want to really add nutrients to your child’s egg meal, you can do so in a few ways:
Add fruit: Serve with sliced avocado and tomato
Add veggies: Finely dice veggies or blend into eggs before scrambling
Add grains: Make an egg sandwich or add some brown rice- rice cakes
Add protein: Add crumbled or shredded cheese
Add fat: Cook in oil or butter
The thing to note, specifically with yolks, is if the egg is raw, it runs the risk of food poisoning. To minimize your child’s risk of salmonella, it is recommended that you fully cook any eggs before offering them to children. This means any dough or batter that might have raw egg in it or a soft-boiled or fried egg with a runny yolk should be offered at the discretion of a parent, as kids with weaker immune systems are more vulnerable to food poisoning. If you choose to expose your children to eggs with a runny yolk, be sure you are following other safe handling practices to minimize the risk.

DID YOU KNOW?
The birds and many of the mammals forbidden by the Torah are predators, while the permitted animals are not. We are commanded not to eat those animals possessive of a cruel nature so that we should not absorb these qualities into ourselves.
IMAGINE
You ate way too many carrots. Do you know what would happen?
Your skin would turn a bit orange! Or imagine you listened to a song again and again and again. What do you think would happen? The song would get stuck in your head for a while! Or imagine you sat down to read a book and got lost in the story. You almost feel like you are in the story because it is so absorbing.
DELVING DEEPER
BRING IT HOME
What is one way you can be more careful with the Kosher food you eat?
Let’s talk more about food for a moment. We are what we eat, not only physically, but also spiritually. And this is exactly what the Torah has in mind when it tells us to keep away from certain foods. For example, in this Parsha the Torah tells us not to eat birds of prey (for example, a vulture) because they are cruel animals that prey on other animals. The Torah doesn’t want us to digest something that has a cruel nature, because that cruelty can be passed on to us just by eating it! We can also apply this lesson to other things we take in, through our other senses. What we see & what we hear affects us more than we may realize. For example, when we listen to a song, read a book, or watch a video, the images and messages go into our minds and psyches and affect the way we think and see life. For this reason, it’s important to be intentional about what influences we allow into ourselves.
