NINE A.M. IS A COMPLETELY FICTIONAL STORY WHICH TAKES PLACE FIFTY YEARS AFTER THE HOLOCAUST.
RECAP OF CHAPTER 33: Zuska is recovering nicely.
Binyamin collapses from exhaustion; he’s been working too hard, trying to cram in more and more work. Sara Liba makes him stay in the infirmary for a good few days of rest.
Dena tells Charna that it’s her anniversary, but she’s sad because it makes her realize that she isn’t such a good wife.
CHAPTER THIRTY FOUR
Name: Schvirtz, Binyamin
Son of: Asher and Rechel Schvirtz
Hospitalized on: 01-01-78
Reason: Intestinal Infection
Discharge: 05-01-78
Did he remember that? Very vaguely. He remembered having painful stomachaches, and figures passing by near his bed. Was his father one of them? Most likely; based on the date, it was half a year before his passing.
Binyamin stood near the open drawer, one of dozens, and held the precious card file. It was easy to get to—much easier than he’d thought. The whole wall unit was made up of endless drawers, and they were divided clearly into half-year periods. He easily found the card file for the first half of 1978, and there he was, the name on the first card.
With a bit more patience, he’d find his father’s file.
Aside for him, there were only two others in the infirmary right now, and their even breathing hummed in his ears like an allclear siren that could change at any moment. He wasn’t worried about Zuretzky from the bakery; he was an innocent youth, a
bit of a nebbach, who would easily accept any excuse for what Binyamin was doing in the event he’d suddenly wake up and ask.
But David Elkovitz, Leo Sherer’s son-in-law…well, let’s just say it was better for him to remain sleeping as long as possible.
It was almost completely dark. A bit of moonlight shone through the window on the other side of the room. On his side, the darkness was thick, aside for a tiny bulb that glowed on top of the main desk. Binyamin took a deep breath and leafed to the next card, and the one after it, and then the one after. None of them had his father’s name.
A thin wail pierced the air. The baby! Elkovitz’s baby!
Quickly and silently, Binyamin closed the open drawer, hiding the card file behind his back, and slipped stealthily back to his bed. His grandmother had chosen the bed closest to the desk for him. She had wanted to keep an eye on him, but it also meant that he was closest to both the drawers with the documents and the light. He covered himself with his blanket and only then allowed himself to breathe easier.
Elkovitz slept on at the other end of the room, and his daughter’s weak wails grew hoarse. Was she cold? No, the room was warm and pleasant. So why was she crying? Maybe she needed to eat or to be changed? Her father didn’t seem to hear anything at all. Binyamin considered waking the man. He sat up in bed and looked toward the cradle where the little girl lay wailing. Elkovitz began to move in his bed, and he suddenly raised his head. He was on his feet in a flash. “What happened?” he murmured

sleepily. “What happened, Cherut? Why are you crying?”
Binyamin cautiously lay back down. It was better if Elkovitz did not even notice that he was awake.
He quietly turned over so his back was to the man and his daughter; like this he was facing the dim light. He pulled the blanket up to his shoulders, with the card file next to him. Careful not to make a sound, he pulled out a thin stack of cards and drew it closer to his eyes. Someone else’s intestinal infection. Next, a worker’s broken leg. A branch that poked the eye of…Leo Sherer? He was too young to remember this story.
Another card, and another. He was coming to the end of the diagnostic cards for this half of 1978. And he hadn’t yet found his father’s.
Binyamin took out the last card. It wasn’t his father’s either; it was the Zuretzky family’s baby, who was born with a weak heart and remained in the infirmary for more than four months after birth. Ooohhh, that must be Iszak Zuretzky, who was frequently hospitalized here. Poor guy.
Based on these cards, in that half a year, fifteen years ago, no one in the camp had passed away.
But that wasn’t true; he knew his father had passed away during that time!
Could there be a mix-up between the secular date and the Hebrew date?
Elkovitz murmured something to his baby in a quiet voice, and if Binyamin was not mistaken, it was Adon Olam. Silently, Binyamin returned the cards to the metal box, his subversive actions concealed by his blanket, as he waited impatiently for the baby to calm down and her father to go back to sleep. He had to take advantage of this opportunity, because the infirmary was not always unstaffed at night, as it was now.
Slowly, the song faded out, and silence fell once again on the room. Binyamin didn’t dare move.
The hands on the large clock hanging on the wall of the clinic turned three more times, which felt like an eternity, and only then did he turn around. By the light of the moon, he saw that the man was sitting on a chair, one handing resting on the baby; his eyes were closed. Binyamin waited a few more minutes and then stood up slowly. He
got off the bed, hugging the card file, and went back to the drawers.
He opened the drawer, put the file back, and reached for the one to its right. Maybe by mistake, his father’s card had been placed in the second half of the year?
“Can I help you?”
Binyamin turned around slowly. His hand fell from the open drawer.
Leo’s son-in-law stood about ten feet away, staring at him.
“Not really,” Binyamin said quietly.
“It looks like you were searching for something in the drawers. Does something hurt you? Because if so, this is not where the medicines are kept. They are in a locked cabinet. But if you’re really, really in pain, or there’s some other urgent matter, you can press this button. It’s a bell to the house of the doctor, Dr. Katzburg.” Elkovitz pointed to a black metal box hanging on the wall to his right, with a large red button in the middle. “Should I press it for you?” he asked. Binyamin didn’t know if that look in his eyes was hostile, or if he was just imagining it.
“No thanks.”
“You weren’t looking for something to help you relax?”
Binyamin closed the drawer that had remained open behind his back, and slowly went back to his bed. “No,” he said as he sat down on it.
“So what do you need? Those drawers are full of paperwork aren’t they? Doesn’t sound nice to me to be prying into other people’s medical records.”
“It’s also not nice to follow other people around.”
“The minute you got up so slowly from your bed the first time, it looked to me like you were plotting something.” He sat down on the chair in the middle of the room. “But you are from a good family, Schvirtz. We hear good things about you. It’s hard for me to believe that you even know how to do foolish things.”
“I really wasn’t doing something foolish.”
“So what were you doing?”
He was persistent. But Binyamin knew how to be equally persistent. He reminded himself that this was someone who, as far as he knew from Naomi, was in the process of becoming more religious for a long time already. Did that
mean he didn’t have to be afraid of him?
“I wanted to find a card from an old hospitalization of mine, from the last time I was here.”
“Now?” Elkovitz wrinkled his nose.
“I was a kid, fifteen years ago.”
“I meant to ask why you chose to do it now, at night, like a thief. If you wanted to, you could have asked your grandmother to find it for you.” His tone was laced with doubt, but his baby suddenly started crying, drowning out all the tones, those that were there and those that were not. “Don’t cry, Cherut,” he murmured, hurrying over to her. “Where is your milk bottle? Here, here…”
“You choose very unique names for your children,” Binyamin remarked form his bed. “Dror, Cherut. Hebrew names.”
“I like the way they sound.”
“And the meaning?”
“Is there someone here who likes living in this place?”
“It is good here,” Binyamin said. “The world around us just wants to swallow us up, if we go out there. Did you see the article in the newspaper they gave out at the end of last week? Did you read that they discovered a new way to detect Jews?”
“Yes, I read it.” He was busy with the bottle and his daughter for a few long moments. Then he raised his head and said, “It’s fine, you can go and check your papers, or whatever you want. I won’t bother you.”
“Thank you,” Binyamin said, but then slipped down into a lying position.
“I meant that I won’t bother you even after you get released. I know how to forget things.”
He turned his back to Binyamin’s bed and once again began to hum Adon Olam to his daughter. Binyamin raised himself on his left elbow and studied Elkovitz’s back.
After a long moment, he slid back down onto the cold floor and walked over to the wall of drawers. ***
Dena walked around the quiet, clean house. Night had fallen. She couldn’t help herself and dialed her parents’
house.
“Dena’le!” Her mother immediately recognized her voice. “I’m so glad you called! Mazel tov on your anniversary, and many, many more!”
“Amen, thanks.” Her daughter could hardly bring herself to talk.
“Just before, as soon as I remembered the date, I took out your wedding pictures. You were such a beautiful kallah, Dena, and you both have so much chein… You know, I think about you all day. I am so proud of you.”
“Me?”
“Yes, you’re a wonderful wife, Dena.”
“I am?”
“Sure,” her mother said confidently.
Dena was quiet. She wasn’t childish enough to say to her mother, “No, I’m a bad wife,” so that her mother should say, “No, you’re good.” But still.
“But I didn’t do anything today, Ima.” She was near tears. “The cleaning lady cleaned the house, my mother-in-law cooked the hot meal we ate… I really didn’t do anything!”
“Well, what about the children?”
“Of course I took care of them. But that’s not what I mean.”
“And who warmed up the food?”
“Ima, please. Every normal woman does these things, even non-Jewish ones! She takes care of her kids, warms up their food…”
“Dena!”
“I’m not in a great mood tonight, Ima,” Dena said with a sniff. “But don’t worry. Most of the time I’m fine.”
“Okay, darling… I hope you feel better.”
They hurried to end the call because the minutes accumulated into lots of money, but it was hard to say that Dena’s mother was calm now.
“I’m going to call her shivgger,” she told her husband.
“The shivgger? Why, are there problems there?”
“I don’t think so, but Dena doesn’t sound good.” She took out her phone book from the drawer. “Three minutes, not more. They need to know what’s going on with her.”

SHABBOS SERIES
People are always looking for classic Shabbos staples. This two week series has some basic recipes to bring to your Shabbos meal.
DEVOIRY FEDER @SPRINKLEDBYVO
CHALLAH
Last summer, I went on a hunt to find the best challah recipe out there. Every week I tried someone else’s recipe. But they weren’t what I was looking for and I just decided to make my own. This challah is a sweeter challah with the fluffiest inside and crispiest outside.
Ingredients:
4 oz fresh yeast
3/4 cup sugar
5 cups warm water
1 cup sugar
1 cup oil
1 Tbsp vanilla extract
4-5 Tbsp honey
3 eggs
4 Tbsp salt
6 lb high gluten flour
2 eggs, for egg wash
Sesame seeds
Directions:
1. In a large bowl, combine warm water, 3/4 sugar and yeast. Break yeast with spoon and let rest for a few minutes.
2. In a large challah bowl, combine sugar, oil, vanilla extract, honey and eggs. Mix well until fully combined.
3. Add blossomed yeast mixture to your oil mixture. Mix well.
4. Add half the bag of flour and mix with a spatula for 2-3 minutes. Add salt and mix well.
5. Add the rest of the flour, leaving over approximately 1 cup to incorporate later if sticky. Mix with a spoon until too difficult.
6. Pour mixture on the counter and knead by hand for 10-12 minutes.
7. Grease your bowl with oil and return dough. Cover and let rise for an hour. You can also let it rise in the fridge overnight at this point and bring to room temperature before braiding.
8. Preheat oven to 175°. Braid according to preference and let rise covered for a half hour. Egg wash each challah and sprinkle sesame seeds. Bake for 30 minutes on 175°.
9. Higher oven to 325° and continue baking for an additional 45 minutes or until golden brown.
SIMPLE BAKED SALMON
This salmon was created by my mother and came out so delicious. Fish is something I don’t love making. But this baked salmon is the perfect addition to your Shabbos meal. It’s sweet and savory without being cooked.
Ingredients:
4 slices salmon fillet
2 cubes frozen garlic
2 Tbsp brown sugar
1 Tbsp soy sauce
1 Tbsp lemon juice
1 Tbsp olive oil
1/4 tsp black pepper
Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 425°.
2. In a small pan that fits all salmon slices, combine all ingredients. Place salmon upside down in pan. Marinate for 30 minutes.
3. Bake for 20-25 minutes until cooked.
CLASSIC POTATO KUGEL
This is my mother’s original recipe. And it’s still the best. The Yukon gold potatoes add creaminess for that perfect “mushy” potato kugel. Broiling creates the crispiest kugel top. This is the perfect non stringy potato kugel you’re looking for.
Ingredients:
4 large Idaho potatoes
8 small Yukon gold potatoes (they should be equivalent in size to 4 Idaho potatoes)
8 eggs
1 cup oil
1 cup cold water or seltzer
2 Tbsp kosher salt
Sprinkle onion powder
Sprinkle white pepper
Directions:
1. Using the S-blade of a food processor, combine all ingredients except potatoes. Mix well and pour into a well greased 9x13 pan.
2. Using the kugel blade, shred the potatoes.
3. Add to the 9x13 and mix well to combine.
4. Place in oven and broil for 15 minutes.
5. Lower the oven to 450°, bake for 30-45 minutes. Lower again to 350° and bake for an additional hour.

45 POWER TO BE
By: Chaya Blustein
Recap: Mrs. Gordon wonders why Mr. Seidman is willing to offer her a raise and an assistant to get her to stay. Mr. Seidman explains that at this year’s Bnos Golda fundraiser, there had been one very large donor who had mentioned that his donation was in honor of Bnos Golda’s principal, Mrs. Gordon, who had gone out of her way to help his granddaughters, students in the school. Mrs. Gordon realizes that Mr. Seidman is desperate to get her to stay so that this donor will keep up his donations.
Mrs. Kleinberg calls Mrs. Gordon and tells her that the rescheduled bail hearing was going to be taking place the next day. She asks if Perry and Bruchi can once again stay in Mrs. Gordon’s office during the hearing, and Mrs. Gordon agrees.
At the ice cream store, Bruchi strikes up a conversation with the storeowner, who takes Bruchi and her friends to the front of the line. Tzippy thanks Bruchi for cutting the line for them, and Bruchi realizes that she appreciates getting thanked like any other girl in the class.
Harry tells Shachne that he’s confident they will have bail.
CHAPTER 45
Mrs. Gordon hung up the phone with Mrs. Kleinberg, then sat and stared into space.
After a few seconds, she picked up the phone and dialed a number. It was high time she spoke to her sister-inlaw and updated her on what was going on.
“Hi Devorah, how are you?”
“Good, Baruch Hashem, and you? Aren’t you at work now?”
“Yes, and I’m assuming you’re also.”
“Yup. So what can I do for my soon-to-be workmate today?”
“So that’s what I wanted to talk about, Devorah,” Mrs. Gordon said, the slightest edge to her voice.
“What do you mean?” Devorah asked, cautious.
“It was supposed to be strictly confidential, right?”
“Oh no, don’t tell me,” Devorah said, immediately understanding where Mrs. Gordon was headed. “Did someone leak it?”
“Apparently.”
“Who found out?”
“Only the person who was absolutely not supposed to find out,” Mrs. Gordon said.
“Your boss?” Devorah guessed.
“Right. He was quite upset that he didn’t hear it from me, and I can’t blame him. But I really want to know –where did he find out from? Except for my husband, I literally didn’t tell anyone else about my decision.”
There was an uncomfortable silence on the line.
“I’m really sorry that this happened, Shaina,” Devorah said apologetically. “That must have been really uncomfortable for you. Truth is, though, I’m not sure how it got out from our end. I only told my boss about your decision, and I’m pretty sure I made it clear to him that it was confidential.”
“Hmm. Do you think my boss had a random bit of nevuah here?”
Devorah laughed, then sobered immediately.
“So what are you going to do, Shaina? I’m sure he’s hopping mad. I would be, if I was losing such a great principal.”
“He is, well, he was. I had a very interesting meeting with him just now, and I’m not sure of anything anymore.”
“What does that mean?” Devorah asked.
“It means that I might have to think about this decision of whether or not to leave my job, again.”
“Are you serious? What in the world could he have said to convince you to stay? And really, you already gave us a commitment, you know. I told my boss already.”
“Right, I’m not doing anything yet. I’m just letting you know what’s going on.”
Devorah was quiet.
“I’ll keep you posted,” Shaina told her.
When the four eighth graders finally left the ice cream store, they were in high spirits.
“We are totally coming back here again,” Tzippy declared.
“Totally,” Chevy agreed. “It’s a whole different kind of ice cream, no?”
“Yeah, it’s so cool that we got to taste it first,” Mali said. “We’ll have to tell everyone in school tomorrow to go check it out.”
“That’s exactly the point,” Bruchi said. “They’re giving out free tastings so you’ll go tell everyone about them and they’ll get a bunch of new customers.”
“It’s smart business,” Mali laughed.
“You see it’s working already.”
“Here’s my house,” Tzippy said, stopping in front of a red-brick house.
“Bye everyone!”
After Tzippy left, there was an awkward silence. Tzippy was the only one who had been friends with Bruchi “before.”
Chevy had been invited to Bruchi’s exclusive group here and there, but she wasn’t an official part of Bruchi’s orbit.
Which meant that for Bruchi, being left with Chevy and Mali was uncomfortable.
“I live on the next block,” Chevy said. “It’s out of the way for you, right?”
Bruchi and Mali looked at each other.
“Yeah, I guess,” Mali said. “We would probably go down the other direction.”
“Okay, so bye! Thanks for convincing us to go get ice cream, Mali, and thanks Bruchi for cutting us the line. See you tomorrow!”
With that, Chevy walked off, her ponytail
swinging.
Now it was just Bruchi and Mali.
“I think your house is on the way home for me,” Mali said, smiling at Bruchi.
Bruchi returned a weak smile, and the two of them started walking in the other direction.
The awkward silence stretched.
Mali tried desperately to think of something to say, but they’d already analyzed the ice cream gelato to death back in the ice cream store.
What did you talk about with your exclass queen?
“BRUCHI WAVED IT AWAY AND WENT BACK TO THE TABLE, PERRY STARING AFTER HER IN NEWFOUND RESPECT.”
someone she’d never deigned to give the time of day to in the past.
A harebrained idea began taking shape in Bruchi’s mind, though she could hardly believe she was entertaining the thought.
Impulsively, she turned to Mali.
“Um, Mali? Would you by any chance want to come to my house for a little? We could have a snack before you go home.”
Surprised disbelief shone in Mali’s eyes. For all that Bruchi seemed to have mellowed, this was definitely the next step.
Mali had never even dared dream of getting invited to the Kleinberg house. And now, Bruchi was inviting for a oneon-one visit?
“Of course, I’d love that!” Mali said immediately.
Bruchi smiled. “Great, we’re almost there,” she said.
A corner of her mind groaned at the prospect of having to endure more of Mali’s annoying good cheer for the next little while.
But mostly, she was relieved to have company to distract herself from what was coming.
She walked up to the front door of her house. Mali, at her side, was eagerly taking in every detail of the Kleinberg residence.
“How did you figure out who the storeowner was?” Mali finally asked.
“Oh, I could tell,” Bruchi said. “She was looking around like she owned the place. I also know her from shul, so when my aunt told me about her, I knew who she was.”
“Wow,” Mali said.
“Yeah,” Bruchi said, though Mali’s excitability was starting to grate on her nerves.
As they neared Bruchi’s house, Bruchi’s mind focused on what was waiting for her there, and her stomach plummeted. Compared to sitting in her big empty house, waiting to find out what the judge would decree on her father tomorrow, walking and talking with her classmates was the sweetest thing she could have been doing.
Even if the classmate in question was
Bruchi let them in, and showed Mali to the breakfast nook, where Bruchi liked to have her after-school snacks with her friends.
“I’m so full from the ice cream, who can even eat a snack?” Mali giggled.
“I’ll find something you can’t say no to,” Bruchi said, and began rummaging through the cabinets.
Not finding anything she approved of, she moved to the fridge, where she found fresh cheese blintzes from their favorite dairy restaurant. Her mother had probably bought the blintzes for lunch, and left some for Bruchi because she knew her daughter would appreciate it.
“How about some cheese blintzes from The Milk Bottle?” Bruchi asked, taking out the small tray.
“The Milk Bottle, oh my!” Mali exclaimed. Bruchi served her two cheese blintzes on a china plate, and placed the dipping sauces on the table.
It felt good to play hostess again, even if it was only for Mali Weidenfeld.
“Whoa, it even comes with dipping sauces!” Mali exclaimed. “So fancy!”
Bruchi smiled thinly.
Mali just wasn’t sophisticated. But right now, it didn’t matter. It mattered that Mali was distracting her from thinking about tomorrow.
“Yeah, they always give dipping sauces with their blintzes,” Bruchi said.
She took another blintz for herself on a plate.
Was Mali wondering why everything seemed to be going on as normal in the Kleinberg home? Bruchi squirmed at the thought, then pushed it away.
But it didn’t take long for her bubble to burst.
“Bruchi?” Perry’s voice came as she walked through the door.
She stopped short as she took in the scene of Bruchi and Mali sitting there, about to dig into their scrumptiouslooking blintzes.
She looked at Bruchi, eyes flashing. But Perry wouldn’t say anything in front of Mali, Bruchi knew, even as she cowered in the face of Perry’s withering gaze.
“Bruchi, come here,” Perry said, her voice soft but steely.
Bruchi looked at Mali apologetically, then got up to see what Perry wanted.
“What are you thinking, having a party when Tatty’s in jail and going to court tomorrow?” Perry practically spit the words out at Bruchi.
Bruchi placed both hands on her hips.
“Miss Perry Kleinberg, don’t be such a know-it-all,” Bruchi said sharply. “You don’t understand anything. Who gives
you the right to tell me what to do?”
“All I know is that it doesn’t make any sense to party at a time like this,” Perry said accusingly.
“And what if this is just my way of dealing with it?” Bruchi said. “And just for your information, the girl you just made me leave by herself at the table is a girl I was never friends with. She was thrilled to get invited to our house, so please don’t ruin it for her now.”
That quieted Perry down.
She looked at her sister with new understanding in her eyes.
Maybe Bruchi really was growing up from this.
“I’m sorry, Bruchi,” Perry said.
Bruchi waved it away and went back to the table, Perry staring after her in newfound respect.
Not only hadn’t Bruchi blown up at her, as she usually did, especially lately, she actually explained herself in a more mature way than Perry could ever remember hearing from her sister.
Bruchi wasn’t oblivious, Perry realized. It was like Mrs. Gordon told her – they just had different ways of dealing with things.
“The weirdest part about all this is,” Nachman said when his wife had finished describing her meeting with Mr. Seidman that morning, “that this thing that Mr. Seidman will do anything for donors is something that really bothered you in the past.”
“Definitely! It’s made me so many problems. Although I understand that as an administrator he has to think about the bottom line, I always felt like

you can’t put that front and center and ignore everything else. Whenever that happened, it made me so much agmas nefesh.”
“Right, and now, the fact that Mr. Seidman puts his donors and finances front and center now actually is working in your favor,” Nachman Gordon said with a smile.
“Meaning, he only wants me to stay because he sees I’m worth it, huh?”
Shaina Gordon said, cynically.
“You’re worth your weight in gold for that school,” Nachman said loyally.
“But yes, the fact that he realizes that keeping you on as principal is literally, ‘shaveh kesef,’ worth money, he’ll do anything to keep you, because that makes all the difference to him.”
Shaina chuckled. “You’re right, it is actually really ironic that the exact thing that got me so frustrated in the past is now what’s getting Mr. Seidman to do anything to convince me to stay.”
She paused, and looked at her husband.
“So to you, it’s a done deal? I’m accepting his offer and staying on as principal, telling Devorah forget it about her job?”
“No, I didn’t say that,” Nachman hurried to correct that impression. “You already told Devorah that you’ll be taking the job, remember?”
“Right, though I called her this morning and told her that I’m reconsidering.”
“But didn’t you commit to her already?”
“Yes, I did, but we didn’t sign anything…”
“Giving your word also counts for something. We would need to ask a shaila before doing anything.” • TO BE CONTINUED

MEN’S 4 DAY EXPERIENCE
S S STRATEGIES FOR OPTIMUM SUCCESS WORDS AS WEAPONS: LEARNING TO USE WORDS POSITIVELY
Just a few days ago, I bumped into a former student in the supermarket. When she saw me, she stepped away from her shopping cart full of fruits and vegetables, and warmly hugged me. “Mrs. Schonfeld, I wanted to tell you something that you said to me a few years ago that has stayed with me until today.” We had worked together on social skills to help her feel more comfortable when meeting new people. I tried to jog my memory and remember something specific I had said to bolster her confidence, but nothing particularly stood out. Instead, I smiled and said, “Yes, Sarah, what was it that I said?”
Her eyes filled with tears and she revealed, “You mentioned that when I smile, I often smile with my eyes too and that my whole face lights up. You told me that my sincerity comes through when I genuinely smile. As I was going on shidduchim, I would always remember what you said about my smile and would hope that others felt the same way. And then, when I went on a shidduch with someone who seemed really special, I had a stronger belief in myself. Most importantly, I didn’t hesitate to smile. And, now we are married and already have our first child.”
I congratulated Sarah, chatted with her for a few minutes, and then continued with my shopping. As I was picking out my string beans, I began to think a troubling thought. One comment that I had made to Sarah several years ago
had influenced her in wonderful ways. Yet, I did not even remember making the comment. Of course, in this instance, the comment I made was positive and helpful. However, what about comments that might have indirectly hurt one of my students? Years later, an accidentally ill-placed could still have a negative effect. Simple words can have such a huge outcome on those around us. That’s why we have to be so careful about both what we say and the way we say it.
Sticks and Stones Can Break My Bones, but Words Will Last Forever
Many of us remember our parents telling us that if people called us names or hurt our feelings, we should simply tell ourselves, “Sticks and stones can break my bones, but words will never harm me.” Unfortunately, that logic does not hold true. In fact, verbal abuse can be as harmful, if not more, than physical abuse.
The New York Times reported several extreme instances of verbal abuse or bullying. In March, 2007, 17-year-old Eric Mohat shot himself in the head, after a long-term tormentor told him in class, “Why don’t you go home and shoot yourself; no one will miss you.”
More recently, Carl Jospeh WalkerHoover, an eleven-year-old boy from Springfield, Massachusetts hanged himself after being

incessantly hounded by classmates about his appearance.
The instances above are radical cases of verbal abuse and bullying; however, they illustrate the power of words and their effect on children’s psyches. Often, we underestimate the consequences of our comments, but even seemingly innocuous comments can have disastrous results. A poem by Chani Zirkind beautifully demonstrates how five simple words can change a person’s life:
WORDS
I burst out laughing when I heard her say,
The funniest joke I heard all day. She didn't say one, she didn't say two,
I marveled at what her humor can do.
I was sitting here just moments ago,
A little bit bored and a little bit low, And in she walked with her comments and all,
And my gloominess left with no trace at all!
I wondered what part she had in the play,
I heard took place in the school yesterday.
I sat and imagined the friends she attracts,
Her lucky campers with whom she interacts.
Boruch hashem for a talent like hers!
Creating happiness just out of words...
Words
I'm not so sure
Words There's more to her. What I thought isn't true
Because of what words can do.
I've seen her true self with family at home,
But once she steps out her humor's unknown.
Yes, she's tried to tell others her jokes,
But what occurred put down her hopes.
Someone said five words, no more, That closed her in, closed up her door.
Her self confidence to never give up,
Was lost in a comment, “I thought you grew up.”
Adult Impact on Children
Miriam Adahan’s book Sticks and Stones: When Words are Used as Weapons transplants the discussion of verbal bullying into the realm of Jewish thought. Rashi explains that “Lo sonu” (Vayikra 25:17) refers to hurting others with words – ona’as devarim. There are multiple examples of ona’as devarim:
• Getting a person’s hopes up unnecessarily. For example, asking a storeowner a price of an item when you have no intention of buying the item.
• Shaming a person by reminding
him a defect he can do nothing about.
• Acting out of spite, as in sending someone on a wild-goose chase when you know they will not find what they are looking for.
• Humiliating a person, such as reminding someone of his previous immoral behavior.
• Frightening people by getting enraged at them.
Ona’as devarim is painful for people of all ages, but can be particularly devastating if an adult is interacting with a child and intentionally or unintentionally using words to hurt that child. Children will often think that adults know better, therefore if an adult is telling them something that is hurtful, it must be true. This will lead to an internalization of the comment that can cause irreparable damage.
Children with Other Children: School Bullies
Today, many schools have adopted a zero-tolerance policy for bullying. Yet, the problem still exists, prompting bullied children to miss school days because they fear going to school.
What types of children are singled out for bullying? Often, there are different in some way: the way they talk, their name, the way they look, or their family structure. But, more often, the common denominator is that children who are bullied do not fight back. Bullies tend to seek out others that will not defend themselves. Remember, a bully is looking for power and most of the time is trying to show everyone how tough they are. What better way to do that than to find someone who won't fight back?
Thus, how can we as parents or teachers combat bullying in the classroom? There is no curriculum for opposing bullying, however, there are ways to build a better school community:
• Make getting to know each other part of the school curriculum. This way, students will not be singled out because they are different or “weird.”
• Eliminate hierarchy. Don’t allow the same students to be the monitors or helpers every single day.
• If you say bullying, immediately say, “We don’t do that here.” Subsequently, report the problem to the principal.
As adults, we are responsible for creating safe environments for our children, in and out of school.
Solutions Outside of the Classroom
The first step towards combating verbal abuse or bullying is to develop a sensitivity towards the feelings of others. To better understand others, we can ask them to share with us how they feel about our words and actions. We can treat each person as an individual, recognizing that what might hurt one person might not hurt another. Most importantly, we can decide never to intentionally hurt someone with our words, regardless of how frustrated or angry we might be at that moment. Social skills training can enable us to think before we speak, gain confidence in our own achievements, and acquire dignity when interacting with others. Perhaps a mashal or parable can help us better understand this. There is a famous story about two men having a contest on the beach, each attempting to be taller than the other. While one man was digging a hole next to his opponent, the other was building a small hill to stand on. Perhaps the best way to combat ona’as devarim or verbal abuse is to emulate the second man: build your own hill. Instead of digging underneath others in order to put them down, build yourself up through acts of compassion, chesed, and charity.

It is not an exaggeration to say that the halachic sheilos that come up in a hospital setting number in the thousands. And the sheilos are as varied as they are numerous.
There are the many Shabbos concerns: how to call a nurse on Shabbos, adjust an electric bed, walk through automatic doors, use elevators and lights, etc. There are the hilchos tefillah considerations: when and how one may daven in a hospital room. There are the complicated halachos of a yoledes ; issues of bishul akum ; end-of-life situations; and so many other areas of halachah that are affected, for both patients and visitors in the hospital.
This sefer addresses all of these halachos, offering clarity and practical suggestions for those who find themselves in a medical situation.

QI know that water drinking is super important for health and dieting, but I have a very hard time with water. I am wondering what your opinion is about adding Crystal Light powder or diet Snapple to my water for some added taste. Thank you!
AWater is a fundamental component of our health, making up about 60% of our body weight. It plays a critical role in various bodily functions, including temperature regulation, nutrient transport, and waste removal. When it comes to dieting and weight loss, the importance of water cannot be overstated.
Your kidneys are vital organs responsible for filtering waste and excess substances from the blood, which are then excreted in urine. Adequate water intake is crucial for the kidneys to perform their functions effectively. Without sufficient water, the kidneys cannot remove waste efficiently, leading to potential health issues like kidney stones and urinary tract infections.
Regarding water and weight loss, one common misconception is that feelings of hunger always indicate a need for food. However, thirst is often mistaken for hunger. When the body is dehydrated, it can send signals to the brain that mimic hunger pangs. Drinking water when you feel hungry can help determine if you were truly hungry or just thirsty, potentially preventing unnecessary calorie intake.
Drinking water can significantly aid in weight loss for several reasons:
1. Appetite Suppression: Drinking water before meals can create a sense of fullness, reducing overall calorie intake.
2. Metabolism Boost: Staying hydrated can boost your metabolism slightly, helping you burn more calories.
3. Caloric Substitute: Choosing water over highcalorie, sugary beverages reduce overall calorie consumption, aiding in weight management.
For those who dislike the taste of plain water, there are various zero-calorie and zero-sugar options to make hydration more enjoyable, such as:
1. Infused Water: Add slices of fruits (like lemon, lime, or cucumber), herbs (such as mint or basil), or even vegetables (like celery) to water for a refreshing, flavored drink.
2. Herbal Teas: Unsweetened herbal teas can be enjoyed hot or cold and come in a variety of flavors to suit different tastes. Soak a tea bag in hot water and as the day progresses, drip some tea sense into your water.
3. Sparkling Water: Flavored sparkling water is a great option for those who enjoy carbonation. Ensure it is free from added sugars and artificial sweeteners.
4. Water Enhancers: Products like Crystal Light offer zero-calorie, zero-sugar options that can be added to water for flavor. Ensure to choose varieties that do not contain artificial sweeteners if you prefer to avoid them. Note: The most controversial ingredients in Crystal Light are artificial colors and sweeteners. While the FDA generally recognizes them as safe, some claim aspartame, sucralose, stevia, and artificial colors lack long-term evidence and may have adverse effects. Having this within moderation might be ok from time to time.
5. Diluted Juice: Mixing a small amount of 100% fruit juice with water can provide flavor without adding significant calories. Keep the juice to water ratio high (e.g., 1 part juice to 9 parts water).
6. Diet Beverages: Diet Snapple and similar drinks can be mixed with water to dilute their sweetness while still providing a flavored drink. Check for zero-calorie options. Personally, I am not a fan of any diet drinks at any time, even when not on weight loss due to health concerns, but if you will drink your water with a little diet Snapple in it, instead of no water, the costs might outweigh the benefits in this case.
Hope you found this helpful!

Boro Park Center Hosts Petting Zoo Event for the Community
The Boro Park Center held a large-scale community event earlier this week, continuing its tradition of engaging the Heimishe Brooklyn community with enriching activities.
The event was attended by thousands of Brooklyn families, reinforcing the Center’s reputation for offering top-tier care and entertainment for its residents, their families, and the community at large.
This past Sunday, the Boro Park Center brought in a petting zoo for local children and residents to enjoy. The event, which was open to the public, not just to residents' families, had the added bonus of being free of charge.
The event, held on a Sunday, was particularly well-timed, strategically chosen two days before Tisha B'Av. With kids home from day camps and mothers looking for ways to entertain them with fun and educational activities, the Boro Park Center provided the perfect solution.
The petting zoo featured a variety of animals that the children could feed and play with. In addition, there were horse and wagon rides, cool refreshments, a balloon artist,
and gifts for all the children.
When asked about the initiative behind the event, a Boro Park Center Representative shared with Williamsburg365, "We wanted to give back to the community and offer the kids in Boro Park, Williamsburg, and beyond something enjoyable to do on a Sunday during the summer, and we couldn't have done it in a more exciting and fun-filled way, especially on this particular day".
The overwhelming and unexpected turnout, with local residents filling the sidewalks, underscored the community's appreciation for the event, evident in the smiles on everyone's faces. Given the massive success, plans are already in motion to expand the offerings for next year with even more activities on a much larger scale.
The Boro Park Center continues to set the standard for community involvement, as evidenced by the impressive turnout on Sunday. The local residents filled the sidewalks to participate in the event, with their appreciation reflected in the smiles on their faces.

DID YOU KNOW?
The Land of Israel is often called ‘the land flowing with milk and honey.’ Through the process of making milk and honey, we can learn how to extract the positive from the negative.
IMAGINE
Let’s discuss how honey and milk are made. To produce honey, bees collect nectar from flowers, bring it to their hive, and then convert it into honey in their honeycombs. Although honey itself is Kosher, the insect that produces it, the bee, is not. In fact, the Torah strictly prohibits consuming any type of insect, including the bee. Moving on to milk, it comes from a cow. It is extracted from their udders and is monitored by a Jew to ensure it is Cholov Yisroel. To eliminate bacteria the milk undergoes pasteurization, the process of heating the milk before it reaches the supermarket for consumers to purchase and enjoy. Something interesting to note is that beef also comes from a cow! Once the cow is properly slaughtered and salted, it is considered kosher and permitted to be consumed. However, one of the most well-known kosher rules is the prohibition against consuming milk and meat together, even though they both come from the same animal!
DELVING DEEPER
BRING IT HOME
Do you know how it feels when you are too hot or cold, making it difficult to focus? What are some ways to take your mind off the negative experience so you can be more positive?
The Jews had been traveling for many years, and it seemed like there was no end in sight. In this Parsha, Moshe tells them they are finally reaching the end of their travels and are about to enter a special land “flowing with milk and honey” – the Land of Eretz Yisrael. It is a place that is fertile and abundant. Milk and honey are each closely related to non-kosher elements, yet both are 100% kosher. This presents an interesting paradox from which we can learn. In our lives too, there are times when we may be in a negative “non-Kosher” situations or even find a little negativity within ourselves. But rather than giving in to that negativity, we can choose to be like the milk and honey, we can extract the positivity, “that which is Kosher”, and leave behind whatever is not.

A TRUE STORY AS TOLD TO CHAVA L. BEER
There are seven things that characterize a boor, and seven that characterize a wise man…His questions are on the subject and his answers to the point.
Pessy:
I know I always say this, but what happened to me was totally for the books. No, really. Listen and you’ll be blown away.
Just last week, I was talking to my friend, future seventh grade teacher and pouring out my heart. It’s already the end of July and I don’t have a clue what I’m going to be doing next year! With several interviews and model lessons behind me and no follow-up, my self-esteem was teetering on the brink. All those schools thought I wasn’t good enough? Or maybe they had found people with more experience? But I was dynamic. Energetic. Confident. Clear. Was someone giving bad information about me? Would I be stuck in September with no job? The thought haunted me. Calm down, Pessy. Hashem has something in store for you. Openings come up at the last minute sometimes. You did all you could; just relax and leave it up to Him. I tried. And for the most part, I succeeded. Throwing myself into my role as
a counselor left me with less brain space to worry about the not-so-distant future. A born camper, I was and am still squeezing the juice out of every moment in this home away from home. I must admit that I love being a high-and-mighty staff member instead of that shnooky camper subjected to a whole bunch of rules and regulations. The first four weeks flew by and then it was time to go home and restock. I don’t just mean my nosh box. Believe it or not, I do miss home (read: my parents) and the comfort of a private room.
I had just removed a load from the dryer when the phone rang. The caller ID announced in its robotic voice: Wireless Caller. It was an unfamiliar number. Was it yet another tzedakah organization or some random guy trying to sell insurance for the pool we didn't own? Curiosity got the better of me, so I picked up. “Can I please speak to Pessy Davidson?” said the heimishesounding voice on the other line…My heart skipped a beat. Was this job related?
Chani:
It was so out of character for me. I mean, I’m not shy but to get up and mix into the conversation of a total stranger? That’s really not my type. Never before have I done that…until last week. But I have no regrets. Because just as silence has a time and place, so does speech.
So, where was I? Actually, it happened on the Excellent Bus heading to the Catskills. I know, you’re wondering why I was in the city altogether. It’s hard to shlep me out of the pool, let alone send me back to the city. For years, I’ve been spending nine weeks in my bungalow colony, reveling in the physical, emotional and social boost that keeps me going all year round. It’s a time I like to forget about the obligations, the ones that can wait, of course. I even skipped my nephew’s son’s bris the other week, even though I was so happy for him and his mother (my favorite sister) because why spend close to six hours on the road just to pump a few hands and say “Mazel Tov, what a nice name!” when I could be swimming and schmoozing and saying tehilim in our circle? But at age 56, I know that health is not something to be played around with. Back in June, when my dentist told me to follow up with x-rays in another six weeks, I sighed, envisioning the hassle of taking a trip to the city smack in the middle of the summer. My mother’s last piece of advice to me was, “Take care of yourself, no one else will,” so I punched the appointment into my phone and tried to push it out of my mind. Until I couldn’t anymore. So I waved goodbye on that Sunday to my tanned countrymates, heading to the bus that would take me to the sticky, polluted city. Armed with a cold water bottle, some reading material and my trusty phone, I comforted myself with the knowledge that I’d be back before long.
Pessy:
“This is Mrs. Gottlieb from Bnos Gittel. Are you available to come in today for an interview?”
Clearing my throat, I responded, “Sure. In regard to what position is this?”
That means no ponytail today. And no camp top either. Well, you gotta do what you gotta do.
“We’ll discuss this at the interview. Would 2:30 pm work for you?”
“Yes, that’s perfect.”
I hung up the phone and felt myself
flying on a cloud. Wow, He hadn’t forgotten about me! Smack in the middle of camp, just when I “happened” to be in town, a school as prestigious as Bnos Gittel was considering me as a member of their staff. It was 12 o’clock already. My plans for a slow-paced day were trashed and I quickly started packing. The bus back to the Catskills would be leaving at 4. That meant that I would have very little time after the meeting to pack my stuff, grab something to eat and head to the bus stop. Well, I always liked action! After updating Mommy on what was going on, I ran out to the avenue to do some errands. It was already 1:45 when I got back home. My heart racing furiously, I sloppily packed my stuff and made myself presentable. After blowing Mommy a kiss and saying a heartfelt amen to her brachos, I was out the door before you could blink.
“It seems you would be the perfect fit as a steady or permanent substitute in our school. That means being on call to step in and take over a class at any grade level.”
A steady sub? Was that normal? I was dreaming of a teaching job. Should I turn them down?
Keeping my cool, I pretended to take this all in stride.
“That sounds interesting. Can I think it over and get back to you?”
“Of course.”
Mrs. Gottlieb walked me to the door and smiled. Once I got to the building’s entrance, I exhaled deeply, the tension of the last few hours hissing out like air of a deflated balloon. By a sheer miracle, I made the bus.
Chani: 12:30 pm found me in the waiting room, perusing the local circulars. Baruch Hashem for air conditioning, though I couldn’t help but picture my countrymates doing their daily laps at the pool. Three people were ahead of me, or so the receptionist told me. “Greenfeld?” the dental assistant called out. I followed her to Room 5, where the dentist was actually
waiting for me. “What brings you here?” Dr. Hollander asked politely. He glanced at my chart and then back at me. “Well, I was told to come here to remove my temporary crown and replace it with a permanent one. Wasn’t that noted in my file?”
The dentist swiveled his chair to face the screen. After what seemed like an eternity, he stood up and addressed me. “Mrs. Greenfeld, there seems to have been a miscommunication here. Your temporary crowns were done at a different practice. As per our policy, we only finish work that we’ve started.”
“But -”
“I know. You wasted a lot of time coming here. I’m sorry for the misunderstanding.”
The assistant looked at me sympathetically as she ushered me out of the room.
So this whole exhausting trip from the country was for nothing? Gam Zu LeTovah, I told myself, bracing for the sweltering heat that would greet me at the door. Down the avenue I walked, stopping to buy a cool, refreshing smoothie. As if that was worth coming to the city for, I kvetched inwardly. Lunch came next, followed by a phone call to the dentist #1. Thankfully, the dentist claimed that my work could wait until after Labor Day, so I booked an appointment sometime in September. The house was eerily quiet and the ticking of the clock, the humming of the fridge and the blowing of the air conditioner were starting to grate on my nerves. And then I noticed the time: 3:00. Excellent is known for its punctuality, so I started to gather my bearings. Glancing at my scribbled list, I went around the house collecting and packing all those sorely missing items. Dental floss, the other phone charger, another sheitel head…
Taking care to shut the air conditioner and lights, I threw some mints into my purse, grabbed my bag and made my way to the bus stop.

hoping for a relatively private ride. Of course, this was the time to tell Rivky about the unexpected turn of events. I desperately needed to talk to her about this opportunity. On the one hand, I didn’t want to say no. Look, a job, even one that sounded less than prestigious, was better than no job, right? Then again, who said a bona fide teaching job wouldn’t come up? Was it worth waiting?

“The lady sounded nice. And I do love subbing. But I’m so unsure. Rivky, do you think it makes sense to take this? It’s almost August and then who knows if anything will come up?”

Rivky listened with all ears, loyal friend that she is. “You sound pretty torn.”
“Yeah - imagine my shidduch resume, job: Permanent sub.”
“But it’s in Bnos Gittel.”
“Kay. Still, it sounds so nebby. I really have to give her an answer soon. My mother told me it’s up to me. Oy, what should I do?”
I tried my sister, Chaya. She’s 10 years older than me, and I really respect her advice. She’s from a different generation, so I don’t always feel like she really gets me, but her levelheadedness has saved me from making rash decisions, more than once.
“You gave three model lessons and none of the principals got back to you, right?”
Ouch.
“Right.”
“Hmmmm…”
“You think I’m not cut out to be a teacher?”
“Not sure. Though this job doesn’t sound bad.”
“So I should take a job that’s not bad? Is that the way to go?”
“I don’t know. Think about it. SorryEli’s crying, I have to hang up.”
They say I talk loudly. I thought I was whispering. The bus wasn’t that full and believe me, plenty of people were yapping on their phones at the same time. Well, what do you know? Someone had been following my conversation. And she had a thing or
the place. Maybe I could spare her the agony of the decision? My input would surely clarify things for her.
So, I strode purposefully to the back seat to fulfill my Heaven-sent mission.
“Um, hi. My name is Chani Greenfeld. I couldn’t help but hear that you’re thinking about working in Bnos Gittel.”
The girl blushed.
“Well, I have to tell you something about Bnos Gittel. I worked there for about 12 years. Actually, I was an assistant in the first grade, then became a rotating substitute teacher, and later a sixth grade teacher.”
Her eyes nearly popped out.
“If they want you, go for it. The place is run like a well-oiled machine. Subbing is a breeze - I know they’ll give you material to teach and will make sure everything works out to the T. Take it from me. Oh, and they always pay on time.”
“Really? So you mean I should take this job?”
“It’s your decision. But I would go for it.”
I went on to tell her how I thought I had come to the city for nothing…and then her eyes really bulged.
“This is totally for the books. Thank you so much for speaking up. I’m gonna call Mrs. Gottlieb right now.”
