44 POWER TO BE

Recap: Tzippy gets Bruchi to join a conversation between the eighth graders about a new ice cream store. Bruchi even agrees to come check it out with them after school.

Mrs. Gordon tries to clear the air with Mr. Seidman and explain why she is leaving her job as principal. Mr. Seidman offers to hire an assistant principal and give her a raise as well, which shocks Mrs. Gordon.

CHAPTER 44

Mr. Seidman looked uncomfortable at the question regarding a salary for an assistant principal.

He knew it was an offer that was completely out of character, and he obviously didn’t relish explaining himself to Mrs. Gordon.

“Well, ah,” he started, clearing his throat. “The truth is that our fundraiser this year did very well. Better than ever before, in fact.”

Mrs. Gordon made some kind of impressed noise in her throat.

“Yes, and one particular donor, who donated extremely generously, mentioned that he had a lot of gratitude to Bnos Golda’s principal.”

Her curiosity piqued, Mrs. Gordon just managed to restrain herself from asking what that donor’s name was.

“It was someone Mr. Schwartz? I believe he said he has a couple of grandchildren in the school.”

“Oh,” Mrs. Gordon said, as the faces of the Schwartz grandchildren flashed in her mind. Which of them had she helped so much that their grandfather was inspired to give such a large donation?

Was it Nechama Raizel Schwartz, the kid who was so desperate for attention she drove up drama to get it? Mrs. Gordon had spent a lot of time speaking to

Nechama Raizel’s mother last year. Mrs. Schwartz had definitely appreciated the support, as she struggled with her special needs child and Nechama Raizel’s acting out.

Or maybe it was Chaya Devorah Schwartz, whom Mrs. Gordon had discreetly helped with a bullying issue? Was it Perel Schwartz, last year’s eighth grader whom Mrs. Gordon had helped get into high school?

It could have been any of the cousins, but as she remembered each Schwartz story, she realized it was probably the combination of all of them together.

If that grandfather had heard snippets about all those grandchildren that each featured Mrs. Gordon in a heroine role, it wasn’t surprising that he’d decided to gift Bnos Golda this year.

Not that Mrs. Gordon had ever been aware that the Schwartz grandfather was wealthy.

Whatever had spurred the donation, the appreciation behind it made Mrs. Gordon feel a warm glow.

“After the fundraiser, I had a productive meeting with Mr. Schwartz, where he agreed to make his donation a yearly one going forward.”

Mrs. Gordon felt the lightbulb turn on in her head with an audible, “Ohhh.” Mr. Schwartz could easily rethink his donation if Bnos Golda’s principal, to whom he had such hakaras hatov, chose to leave her job.

No wonder Mr. Seidman was willing to offer her anything she pleased to get her to stay.

Now that all his cards were openly laid on the table, Mr. Seidman looked uncomfortable. Would Mrs. Gordon realize her playing power in this game?

“Mr. Seidman, this offer is definitely unexpected,” Mrs. Gordon said, bringing the conversation back to where it had started. “Can you give me some time to think about it and get back to you?”

“Yes, I think that’s fair,” Mr. Seidman said, though his expression said, “I hope she doesn’t come back with a long list of demands that I can’t fulfill.”

“Thank you. I’ll let you know what my decision is within a week.”

Mrs. Gordon returned to her office, head whirling with all the new info she had to process.

So Mr. Seidman was determined to have her stay on in her job, after all.

Determined enough to pay her an assistant principal and offer her a raise, all at the same time!

And it was all because of the Schwartz girls that she’d gone out of her way to help.

Life was funny.

As Mrs. Gordon ruminated over these thoughts, sitting at her desk, her phone rang.

“Hello?”

“Hi, Mrs. Gordon, this is Mrs. Klein. There’s a parent on the phone. Can I put her through to you?”

“Which parent?”

“Mrs. Kleinberg.”

“Ah. Yes, put her through.”

“Hello?”

“Hi, Mrs. Gordon.” Mrs. Kleinberg’s voice was brisk. “The rescheduled bail hearing is going to be happening tomorrow morning in the end.”

“So what can I do to help you tomorrow?”

“Well, I’m not having Perry and Bruchi come to the hearing. By now things are pretty safe and they can probably stay home, but it sounded from them that it was very helpful for them to spend the time with you during the last hearing. Can I ask you for a favor, can you have them again?”

There was something humbler about Mrs. Kleinberg’s question, even though it was a pretty bold request. Something was different in the way that Mrs. Kleinberg no longer immediately assumed that the answer would be yes.

“Of course, Mrs. Kleinberg, I would be happy to have them here,” Mrs. Gordon responded. “I will also be davening that the hearing go well and that the judge grants bail.”

“Yes, amen,” Mrs. Kleinberg sighed. “Actually, it’s more likely than ever that my husband actually will get bail,” she suddenly, spontaneously shared. She

needed a listening ear as much as her girls did, or perhaps even more, with the way that most of her friends had disappeared into the woodwork.

“Really?” Mrs. Gordon said, to allow Mrs. Kleinberg to share more.

“Yes, because it came out that a different company was using the information that the software had collected. I don’t really get the whole thing, but the point is that a bunch of other people were arrested in the case, and now no one really thinks that it was my husband’s fault, which obviously it wasn’t.”

Mrs. Kleinberg thought privately what a relief it had been for herself to know that clearly, that her husband really wasn’t a criminal.

“Wow, that’s amazing! That is so bashert that the bail hearing was pushed off, then. Now there are so many more chances of actually being able to post bail.”

“Yes, it’s hashgacha pratis,” Mrs. Kleinberg agreed. “We couldn’t know that this was what was going to happen, but everything is different now.”

“Unbelievable.”

“Yes. I’m going to tell Bruchi and Perry that they’re invited to spend the morning by you tomorrow. Thank you so much, Mrs. Gordon.”

Bruchi walked along with Tzippy, Chevy, and Mali, kicking herself over and over for agreeing to go along.

What crazy girl went to a new ice cream shop when her father was in jail, and his bail hearing was going to be the next morning?

Even if, like her mother kept saying, her father would have wanted her to take care of herself and be happy. Still.

Especially when she wasn’t even interested in the whole thing, and she was only going along because she was afraid that if she didn’t, she would remain on the outside of the eighth grade social scene for the rest of the year.

Immersed in her morose thoughts, Bruchi hardly noticed the other girls’ cheery talk.

“We should really rush if we want to get there before everything’s finished,” Mali said.

“Everything’s probably finished already,” Tzippy said teasingly.

“Look, if we stop talking and start

“AND IT WAS GOOD TO LET GO OF THE BELIEF THAT SHE HAD TO BE BETTER THAN EVERYONE ELSE FOR THEM TO LIKE HER.”

rushing we’ll be there in another minute. Convenient to have an ice cream store so close to school, no?"

"Yeah, perfect if we ever want to cut class," Tzippy said.

“Hey, I didn’t know you were such a bad girl,” Mali said, wagging her finger to Tzippy.

“Hey, I didn’t know you were such a goody-goody,” Tzippy bantered back.

“Here we are!” Chevy said.

Not that any of them would have missed the music blasting out of the new store, with its eye-catching sign, “La Crème: Home of Italian Gelato.”

Just as Bruchi had said, the colors on the sign were blue and white, creating a dreamy feel.

“Let’s go!” Tzippy said.

The store was full of people, though it wasn’t as packed as Bruchi had made it sound. Tzippy took one look at the long line and sighed.

“Uch, we have to wait on this line?” she said.

“I think so,” Mali said.

Bruchi was looking around the store in fascination, when she noticed the storeowner standing on the side, watching the proceedings. She sidled over to her.

“Hi, Mrs. Markowitz. You know my aunt, Gella Rubin? From Rubin Design?”

“Of course! Gella’s your aunt, how cute! She made this store happen, literally made it happen from scratch. She’s just a darling, that Gella, she made my dream come true!”

“It really is a beautiful store,” Bruchi said, giving Mrs. Markowitz a brilliant, fake smile.

“Ooh, it’s my baby,” Mrs. Markowitz said. “You’re Gella’s niece? Come with me, let me get you some of our

specials to taste.”

With that, Mrs. Markowitz beckoned Bruchi to follow her.

Bruchi made eye contact with her friends and motioned that they follow her as well.

“Leave it to Bruchi,” Chevy muttered to Tzippy.

Mrs. Markowitz continued gushing as she instructed one of the workers behind the counter to give Bruchi a bowl of her favorite gelato flavor to taste.

“And these are my friends,” Bruchi said, indicating the girls behind her. Mrs. Markowitz smiled at the other girls and told her worker to prepare servings for each of them too.

“Enjoy it, girls!” Mrs. Markowitz said, as she walked away.

The four girls managed to find an empty table for two, where they squeezed themselves in to taste their treats.

“It’s not normally cool that you got us to cut the line like that,” Tzippy said.

Bruchi smiled, flushing a bit.

In the past, Bruchi would lord this kind of thing over her friends, leaving them too intimidated to even thank her for it.

Now that Tzippy felt more on equal footing with Bruchi, Bruchi had to admit that that kind of compliment was nice.

Nicer than having to always be in charge and cut down everyone else in case they overtook her.

It wasn’t bad to just be part of the group, instead of being the leader. It was actually nicer.

Bruchi thought about this discovery as she licked her spoon of gelato.

“Ooh, this is good!” Tzippy said as she devoured her bowl of ice cream.

Yes, this was good, Bruchi thought to herself. It was good to be back with friends, even if her father was still in jail. And it was good to let go of the belief that she had to be better than everyone else for them to like her.

She could just be Bruchi, with her fun personality, rather than relying on her status to make the girls look up to her.

“Yeah, it really is good,” Bruchi said.

“It’s a solid offer, a really solid offer,” Harry, Mr. Kleinberg’s lawyer, said.

Shachne had just finished detailing the new and improved bail offer that he’d been working on.

Since the first hearing, he had continued working to canvas millions in cash and assets to put up as bail for Mr. Kleinberg. Once the Tee scandal had dropped, friends and acquaintances suddenly realized that Sam Kleinberg wasn’t really the guilty one in the Finance2 drama, and they came forward to help. Now not only did they have a bail fund that could probably be the largest one in history, but they also had character witnesses and a solid defense plan that Harry was confident would convince the judge.

Shachne had also appealed to the community to put together a tefillah gathering for their brother in need. There would be plenty of tefillos on Mr. Kleinberg’s behalf the next morning during the hearing.

“And I checked into the judge,” Harry said. “It’s a judge I’ve worked with before. Unless something really strange happens, Shachne, some unexpected surprise, I’m pretty confident that we’ll have bail.”

What remained was to see if the lawyer would be right.

ESTHER RAPAPORT

NINE A.M. IS A COMPLETELY FICTIONAL STORY WHICH TAKES PLACE FIFTY YEARS AFTER THE HOLOCAUST.

RECAP OF CHAPTER 32: After reading a frightening newspaper article about an American scientist who discovered the Jewish gene— called J1000—and a way to detect it, Binyamin is intent on finding out the truth about how his father died and what he discovered and wrote about in his notebook beforehand.

Charna visits Dena with her son, Duvi’s friend from cheder, and they discuss the Gulf War, which they lived through.

CHAPTER THIRTY THREE

The Lion’s Tooth –

A flower found in the temperate climates of the planet. Its head is yellow when it first blooms, and it then turns into a ball of white-silver hairs. It can serve as food and as a healing plant. Its leaves can be eaten, despite tasting a bit bitter. They are rich in vitamins and good for the improvement of liver function.

“Naomi read the caption under the dried leaves of the yellowish flower. “This is wonderful, Zuska,” she said, and turned the page over. “All the pages here…you worked so hard on this, didn’t you?

I think that your collection of dried flowers is the biggest one of all the children in the camp.”

Zuska, lying in the bed, smiled shyly and nodded.

“How do you know so much about these plants?”

“My father told me,” her student replied. “He reads a lot.”

Naomi turned another page in Zuska’s book of dried flowers. The investment in every detail was very evident in the little book, and she was duly impressed.

“It’s a good thing you never brought this to school,” she said as she set the book on the small table beside the bed. “Girls might be jealous, and the little kids could ruin it. But it’s really wonderful that you’ve been sent home so that I could come and visit you.

Look what I got out of it!”

She looked around. The house was empty; Zuska’s parents were at work. “Is there something I can do for you before I go back to the other children?” she asked, trying to be practical.

“I don’t think so,” the girl murmured.

“Did your mother leave you food?”

“Yes. Soup and potatoes. And she also promised to come back during her lunch break to see how I’m doing.”

“That’s great. Should I heat up the soup for you?”

“No, I ate it already.”

“But what if you still get hungry?”

Zuska shrugged. “There’s always bread,” she said. Naomi relaxed a bit.

“Okay, great.” She stood up and smiled at her pale student. “The main thing is that you should rest well, and b’ezras Hashem, you’ll get stronger and completely better very soon. We’re looking forward to having you back with us!”

The girl nodded, and Naomi waved as she turned to go. There was no comparing the last time she’d seen her student and this time. Zuska had literally returned to the land of the living.

The snow that had fallen all night had stopped toward morning, and now everything was covered in a blinding layer of white. Naomi pulled her coat tighter around her and considered where to go now. The children were playing nicely, and she had a few

more minutes until the time she’d promised Katy and Rivku that she’d be back. She would go to the offices, to tell Elky about the big improvement in Zuska’s condition. After all, despite everything that was going on between them and around them, Elky deserved to be thanked for what she had done.

Naomi’s footprints dotted the snow-covered path as she walked toward the small building near the factory, wondering if she’d have a chance to see Binyamin for a minute when she got closer. Maybe he would just happen to be outside. He had looked so awful yesterday at Zeide and Babbe’s apartment, that even Aryeh had told her afterward at home that he hoped Binyamin wasn’t coming down with pneumonia like so many of the others.

She didn’t see her brother, but she did hear his name being called. As she squinted and looked at the group standing in front of the cement structure, she heard a babble of voices, and it didn’t sound good at all.

“It’s Binyamin!”

“Call someone from the infirmary!”

“Shvirtz! What happened to Shvirtz?”

Naomi stopped and gaped in horror. What had happened to Binyamin?!

Someone emerged from between the trees at a fast clip, and almost collided with her. “Oh, hi, Naomi,” she murmured.

“What…what happened?” Naomi asked tremulously.

“What happened? Ask your grandmother.” Elky’s voice was loaded.

“My grandmother is here? She’s dealing with… what’s going on here?”

“Your grandmother?” Elky paused for a moment. “Your grandmother deals with everything that happens. And excuse me for my chutzpah, but I didn’t ask her to deal with the situation! All I did was tell my mother about the invitation to the birthday party, and she said we should ask her advice. And now, because of her, I lost out on a grant of forty marks! Do you get that?!”

No, Naomi didn’t get it. “But what happened to Binyamin?!”

capable of, toward the infirmary. ***

“Two grandchildren in one blow,” Sara Liba said sternly. “Naomi, haven’t you learned yet, at your age, that nothing good can come out of being hasty? Running down the hill in the snow?” With her lips pressed together, she tightened the last bandage around Naomi’s wrist. “I hope it’s not a break… Our supply of casts has been dwindling recently. Wangel promised to bring some more, but they haven’t done it yet. Okay, let’s see how you feel the rest of today and tomorrow.”

The infirmary was quiet. At the end of the room, two beds were occupied.

“I think it’s okay…” Naomi tried carefully to raise her arm from the metal frame it was resting on. “Ow, it hurts… But not terribly.”

“You’re not going back to the preschool today, right? You need to rest at least until tomorrow.”

"So you’ll stay here for five days’ rest, Binyamin, and stop taking the whole world onto your shoulders.

It looked like Elky didn’t get it either. “I’m not even talking anymore about the party itself,” she continued, as if Naomi hadn’t said a word. “Although they asked me to come, did you know that? They came to me and invited me personally! And I’m the one who didn’t end up going… Okay, so that I could handle, maybe. But I’m asking you something else: Will someone pay me back for the grant that was coming to me? Shoshana Gold went in my place, and she got the payment instead of me! Huh!”

Naomi blinked, and then stared ahead at the crowd that was forming. “Something happened to my brother,” she muttered, her voice coming out choked. “And I don’t know if they went to get help or not. And you’re getting angry about grants?!”

And without saying another word, she turned to the snowy path on the hill and ran at a speed that she never fathomed she was

“Fine,” Naomi said, resigned. “The number of hours I’m owing Rivku is growing and growing… Still, it was worth it for me, to be able to visit Zuska. She was so happy.”

“And in honor of the fact that she vacated her bed here, baruch Hashem, you both decided to come here together?”

“She was scared for me.” Binyamin’s voice came from one of the beds. “That’s why she ran like that.”

“Yes.” Babbe suppressed a smile. “Everything is fine, you devoted brother. We’re not forgetting that it was all with good intentions. And how are you now?”

“Better. I’m still very dizzy…but that’s all.”

“Strong dizziness and extreme fatigue. Exhaustion.” Babbe studied Binyamin with folded arms. “You’ve totally overdone it these past few weeks. How many furs did you process this week?”

“I’d rather not say,” he whispered.

“And how were you able to do it?”

“It became almost official. Wangel is pleased with my output, and he lets me stay extra hours as long as I don’t leave the factory.”

“So you stayed there night after night? Until dawn? And then you started another day’s work right away?”

“And then I went to shul. But not every night. Only three nights a week.”

“It was all for us?” Naomi couldn’t contain herself.

“No.” He bit his lip. “I’m the strong type, really, don’t—” He fell silent in the face of his grandmother’s glare.

“If something happens to you, chalilah, you will never be able to help anyone again,” she said. “Now listen to me, and listen well: According to my diagnosis, and you know I’m almost a real doctor after all these years of working in this infirmary, you didn’t get the pneumonia that was raging here. You are simply tired,

drained; you literally squeezed your body out to the last drop.” She raised a hand to silence him.

“And I hope that when your mother leaves work soon, and hears everything that her dear son has done, she will also hear my diagnosis, and not only the description of how, in the middle of a conversation with other workers, you suddenly swayed and crumpled to the floor in front of their eyes, like a tree that was cut down.”

“I hope so, too.” He smiled at the description.

“So you’ll stay here for five days’ rest, Binyamin, and stop taking the whole world onto your shoulders. Hashem has many emissaries; you’re not the only one. Do you hear?”

“Yes.” He nodded. “Who else is here in the infirmary now?”

“The son of Zuretzky, from the bakery, and Elkovitz, who is watching his little daughter.”

“How is she, Babbe?” Naomi, who had remained sitting on her chair, suddenly sat up straighter and lifted her head.

“Baruch Hashem, much, much better. The antibiotics arrived just in time, although we can’t release her yet. She’s still very weak.”

“Everyone should just be healthy,” Binyamin murmured.

“So is it clear, Binyamin? You’re staying here under observation, and I don’t want to hear a single word in argument, okay? Maybe, if you’ll be a very good boy, we’ll let you go out to the shul for Shacharis. I’ll make sure that you eat healthy, filling food, without missing a single meal, and you’ll just rest, rest, rest. Yes?”

And to her astonishment, Binyamin nodded in agreement.

“You need to come to our get-togethers,” Charna said at the end of the visit, while she stood and supervised her children putting away the toys. “Our next meeting is the day after tomorrow. Maybe you want to be the speaker? Each time, a different one of us speaks. You can speak about life in Eretz Yisrael, what we can learn from the people there, what you can learn from us…”

“Are you making fun of me?”

“Not at all. Why do you think I am? You don’t have anything to learn from us?”

“I have lots to learn.” Dena tried valiantly to mend the impression she’d made during those first moments of their initial encounter. “I meant, the fact that you want me to speak. Me? I’m a…simple woman. Not someone who gives speeches.”

“What do you mean?”

“I mean that I’m really not a special woman. I try to be a good wife and a good mother, that’s all.” She shrugged sadly. “And please, let’s not talk about it, okay?

This week is my eight-year anniversary. It makes me sad when I think about what a good wife I could have been… But I’m not.”

“Your anniversary! Mazel tov! Do you want a good recipe for an out-of-this-world cake?”

“What for? No cake that I make can possibly compete with my husband’s mother’s creations…”

“So what are you going to make for the anniversary?”

“I don’t have anything to make.”

“No such thing.” Charna didn’t understand.

“So now you see that there is such a thing.” Dena shook her head, and after a moment added, “Well, of course there are lots of things that I could cook or bake, but anything I make will…have no value. It won’t be special.”

“So you have to come to our next get-together, and we’ll give you some good ideas of really special things you can whip up for your anniversary,” Charna said as she put Yudi’s raincoat on. “Okay, Dena? I’m not letting you get out of this!”

“It’s too late.” Dena smiled dismally. “My anniversary is tomorrow.”

S S STRATEGIES FOR OPTIMUM SUCCESS

TEMPER THOSE TANTRUMS

“But, that is so unfair! I want to sleep over at Tali’s house tonight. You never let me go anywhere,” twelve-year-old Leora sobbed to her mother at dinnertime. Leora’s mother continued ladling out the pea soup to her younger children while she turned to Leora and calmly said, “Leora, you know it is a school night. You cannot stay at a friend’s house.” With that, Leora immediately began to bang on the table, jiggling the spoons and bowls.

Leora’s younger siblings are already familiar with this routine: Leora asks for something and when her mother says no, she instantly begins to wail and shriek. Generally, Leora’s mother ignores her outbursts and attends to Leora’s siblings. Eventually Leora wears herself out and storms off to her room. Yet, the fight does not end there. Whenever anyone mentions sleeping over a friend’s house, Leora will begin her screaming spiel again.

Next door, two-year-old Yitzi is getting ready for bed. He emerges from the bath and his mother begins to dress him in his favorite baseball pajamas. At first, Yitzi happily moves his arms and legs in order to squeeze into his pajamas, but when his mother unrolls his socks, Yitzi begins to screech, “No socks! No socks!”

Yitzi’s mother tries to understand his reaction and asked him, “Yitzi, it’s cold outside, you should wear socks. Why don’t you want to

wear them to sleep?” However, instead of responding, Yitzi begins hitting his small fists against the floor and screaming, “No, no socks!” Exasperated, Yitzi’s mother decides to avoid a fight and allows him to go to bed without his socks on. The next night, she knows she can expect to have a similar fight again.

What Leora and Yitzi’s mothers do not know is that they are experiencing very similar behavior even though their children are such disparate ages. Temper tantrums or fits are common for “terrible twos” and children entering adolescence. Interestingly, the reasons behind the tantrums and the effective ways to deal with these tantrums are the same regardless of age.

Why do toddlers and teenagers have in common?

SEPARATION

Both toddlers and teenagers are undergoing a process called separation. As babies get older and gain new skills, such as walking, they begin to understand that they can leave their parents and that their parents can leave them. As Dr. T. Brazelton, the author of Toddlers and Parents, explains, “With the realization of independence and the ability to ‘leave’ comes an overwhelming feeling of dependence.” In other words, toddlers’ newfound capabilities

IF THEY DON'T LEARN THE WAY WE TEACH, WE MUST TEACH THEM THE WAY THEY LEARN Rifka Schonfeld, Director

frighten them and prompt them to cling to their parents more than in the past.

Just as toddlers are learning new skills, teenagers are discovering new worlds and opportunities beyond the home. Teenagers recognize the relationships they are creating with their friends and begin to understand that their worlds are not necessarily dominated by their parents. This feeling of independence from their parents coupled with the enduring dependence on parents for love, food, and shelter creates conflict when the adolescent attempts to separate.

INDIVIDUATION

As toddlers show dramatic in motor coordination and cognitive skills, they begin to take pleasure in pursuing activities that are separate from their parents’ guidance. With this growing independence, toddlers begin the process called individuation. Individuation is the act of establishing an identity separate from those around a child. Karen Prager, the author of The Psychology of Intimacy, explains that children become fascinated with exercising and proving these developing competencies, thereby making this period on of “joyous self-discovery.”

Coupled with this enjoyable aspect of individuation is the frustration that toddlers feel when they cannot always do what they wish. Often,

this growing sense of self clashes with the rules that parents set, spurring temper tantrums as the child attempts to individuate. Children continue to create a sense of self as they grow, but in adolescence this individuation becomes even more essential to their development. Teenagers become connected to their friends and want to form an identity separate from their family. Often, adolescents, like twelve year-old Leora, are frustrated by the limits their parents set on their freedom. As teenagers view themselves as distinct individuals, they resent their parents’ attempts to control their actions. This resentment often leads to temper tantrums, as the adolescents believe that they should be the only ones dictating the rules and restrictions.

INABILITY TO EXPRESS THEMSELVES

Another common element of toddlers and teenagers is their inability to communicate their feelings in a way that is constructive and beneficial. While toddlers are only just beginning to learn how to speak and manipulate words, teenagers face a different set of communication issues. Ross Greene, author of The Explosive Child, points out that teenagers like Leora are “easily overwhelmed by frustration, and once she’s overwhelmed, it’s practically impossible for her to think rationally until she calms down.”

HOW CAN YOU HELP YOUR CHILD?

Now that we understand that separation, individuation, and an inability to express themselves are at the root of toddler and teenage temper tantrums, what can we do to minimize, manage, and prevent those tantrums? Because the cause of the tantrums is the same regardless of age, the strategies in dealing with these tantrums are very similar.

CONSTRUCTIVE DISCUSSIONS

If your child has asked a question that you believe will lead to a tantrum if you answer with a contradictory response, there are several methods you can use to minimize their reaction. The authors of How to Talk So Kids Will Listen and Listen So Kids Will talk, Adele Faber and Elaine Mazlish, give the following advice:

• Let children make choices: If you think that your two-year-old is not going to want to wear his socks to sleep, before he gets worked up, ask him, “Yitzi, do you want to wear your blue socks or your red socks?” Giving your child the opportunity to make a decision will give him a sense of accomplishment. In turn, he will be excited to wear his socks. Likewise, if your child wants to have a sleepover on a weeknight, address the issue by asking her, “Leora, tonight is not great because it is a school night, but do you want to call Tali and see if you can sleep over for shabbos or for Saturday night?” Allowing Leora to make this decision will enable her to take responsibility for her choices and make her feel like an adult.

• Show respect for your child’s struggle: When your child is upset she believe that they are the only one in the world who feels that way. Whether your child is two or twelve-years-old, she wants to know that you understand what she is going through. Try something like, “Leora, I understand that you are upset because you want to sleep over at Tali’s house. I know how frustrating it is a school night and you aren’t allowed. Let’s talk about another solution.” This will help your child understand that you are on her side, even though you are saying no to her request.

• Encourage Children to Use Sources Outside of the Home: Often, as parents, we set ourselves up as the sole authority in our children’s lives. However, there are many “experts” outside of the home that can be called upon to help the child in their struggle. For instance,

if your child wants a second piece of candy and you prefer that he does not eat it, suggest that your child speak to his dentist about candy. Alternatively, if your child’s pet fish is acting funny and he is anxious that you “fix” it, encourage him to speak to the local pet shop owner. This will take the focus off of the parent and place it on a different form of authority.

TIME ALONE

Once your child has begun to throw a tantrum, often they will not be able to have a constructive conversation with you. Instead, your child might need to figure out a way to calm down on his own. Placing the child in his room or a separate area of the house is an effective way to allow them to relax and be ready to talk.

It is important, though, that this time alone not be translated into a punishment. The child should be permitted to be in his room with his toys – the goal is simply for his to discover how to settle down on his own. Your child hates being out of control as much as you hate it. Therefore, when they manage to calm down, you should immediately comfort them and tell them how proud you are that they managed to relax. You should not, however, give in to whatever the request was that began the tantrum.

CLOSING THOUGHTS

Tantrums arise when children feel that they are not able to assert themselves and that they are not being listened to. In order to prevent and minimize tantrums, it is essential to empathize, empower, and communicate with your child. Undoubtedly, the tantrums will not cease completely, however, this approach will reduce and allow you to cope with the tantrums. More importantly, these strategies will allow your child to feel that you are aware of his desires, even if you do not give him all that he asks for.

BE FIT WITH BENEFIT

QWith barbeque season upon us, are franks healthy? If I am trying to lose weight, should I refrain from eating them? Thank you

AFranks, commonly known as hot dogs, are a type of sausage traditionally made from a mixture of beef, and sometimes poultry. These meats are finely ground, seasoned with a blend of spices, and then encased in a casing made from synthetic materials. Hot dogs are a popular food item, especially in the summertime when we look for lighter and easier dinners.

The primary ingredients in franks typically include: Meat like beef, chicken, or turkey, water, spices and flavor enhancements, preservatives such as sodium nitrate and fillers and binders. These may include corn syrup, modified food starch, and other additives to improve texture and shelf life.

Here are some concerns around franks:

1. High Sodium Content: Hot dogs are typically high in sodium due to the added salts and preservatives, which can contribute to hypertension and cardiovascular issues if consumed in excess.

2. Saturated Fats: The presence of saturated fats from the meats used can impact cholesterol levels, potentially leading to heart disease.

3. Processed Nature: Being a processed meat product, franks have been linked to increased risks of certain cancers.

4. Additives and Preservatives: The presence of additives like nitrates and nitrites has raised health concerns, although these are regulated to ensure safety within certain limits.

From a dietary standpoint, franks are not typically considered a dietetic food due to their composition. While they provide protein, they also come with significant amounts of fat and calories, especially when consumed with buns and condiments. A standard beef frank (approximately 50 grams) typically contains:

- Calories: Around 150-180

- Total Fat: 13-15 grams

- Saturated Fat: 5-6 grams

- Cholesterol: 30-40 milligrams

- Sodium: 450-500 milligrams

- Protein: 5-7 grams

- Carbohydrates: 1-2 grams (from fillers and binders)

Adding a bun and condiments to a frank significantly increases its caloric content and nutritional profile:

- Bun: A standard hot dog bun (approximately 47 grams) adds around 120-150 calories, 1-2 grams of fat, 20-25 grams of carbohydrates, and 3-4 grams of protein.

- Condiments: Common condiments such as ketchup, mustard, relish, and mayonnaise can add varying amounts of calories, sugars, and fats. For example:

- Ketchup (1 tablespoon): Adds about 20 calories and 4 grams of sugar.

- Mustard (1 tablespoon): Adds about 10 calories and negligible fat.

- Relish (1 tablespoon): Adds about 15-20 calories and 4 grams of sugar.

- Mayonnaise (1 tablespoon): Adds about 90 calories and 10 grams of fat.

Thus, a complete hot dog with a bun and basic condiments can easily total around 300-400 calories, with substantial contributions from fats and sugars. While franks can be enjoyed as part of an occasional meal, they are not typically considered a healthy or dietetic choice due to their high sodium, fat, and preservative content. For those looking to maintain a balanced diet, consuming hot dogs in moderation and being mindful of the additional calories and nutrients from buns and condiments is advisable. Opting for lower-fat or lower-sodium varieties and adding fresh vegetables as toppings can help mitigate some of the health concerns associated with traditional hot dogs. In other words, you need to know where in your journey you are at to see if you want to have this now, or aim for lean grilled cutlets or a nice piece of meat instead.

Shaindy Oberlander,

It is not an exaggeration to say that the halachic sheilos that come up in a hospital setting number in the thousands. And the sheilos are as varied as they are numerous.

There are the many Shabbos concerns: how to call a nurse on Shabbos, adjust an electric bed, walk through automatic doors, use elevators and lights, etc. There are the hilchos tefillah considerations: when and how one may daven in a hospital room. There are the complicated halachos of a yoledes ; issues of bishul akum ; end-of-life situations; and so many other areas of halachah that are affected, for both patients and visitors in the hospital.

This sefer addresses all of these halachos, offering clarity and practical suggestions for those who find themselves in a medical situation.

A NOVEL

The circle of light shines on the ground of the clearing. There’s nowhere for them to run. In a moment, it will catch them in its beam. Yocheved grips Etty’s hand, who gives her hand a strong squeeze in return. And it’s in that position, looking like two frightened, little girls, that they’re caught in the beam of Flora Yemini’s flashlight... Who will be the next Goldklang daughter-in-law? Is the shidduch a mistake?

TOGETHER

(SUN 8/18 & MON 8/19)

A free tefillah in Amuka…. two livestreamed events with gedolim, rabbanim, shadchanim and an inspiring kumzits…… half a million Yidden davening for one another on Tu B’Av for shidduchim…… Tu B’Av Together….. What’s this all about? Here is the full scoop.

Yad L’Achim helps rescue Jewish women & children who need rescue from villages and dangerous situations. With Hashem’s help, many of these women have gone on to marry bnei Torah and establish Jewish homes.

But, recognizing that this isn’t always a quick or easy transition, Yad L’Achim arranged for talmidei chachamim to daven in mekomos hakedoshim such as Amuka and Meron so that these women should merit finding their shidduch. Soon, Yad L’Achim began accepting names for tefillah from Jews across the world, who wanted the talmidei chachamim to daven for them, too. Yad L’Achim has an ironclad rule; There never was and never will be any donation required to submit names for tefillah through Yad L’Achim.

And for many years, Yad L’Achim arranged for a minyan of talmidei chachamim to daven in Amuka (the resting place of the Tanna Yonasan Ben Uziel), an auspicious place to daven for a shidduch, on Tu B’Av, the day of segulah to daven for a shidduch.

Several years ago, with the brachah and encouragement of Rav Chaim Kanievsky zt”l and other gedolim, Yad L’Achim launched Tu B’Av Together, when not only do the talmidei chachamim daven in Amuka, but Jews all across the world unite to daven for all the singles in Klal Yisrael, reciting eight specific kapitlach of Tehillim on Tu B’Av - Together!

There are several ways to participate in this special day.

Two inspiring, uplifting events will be livestreamed on TuBavTogether. com. The first live event will take place on the eve of Tu B’Av, Sunday, August 18th beginning at 7:00p.m. EST, with a full-length program of shidduch tips, inspiration from renowned speakers and an interactive kumzits!

This year will also feature an exciting shidduch panel with three of the top shadchanim in the US, R’ Tzodek Katz, Reb Shloimie Lewenstein & Reb Meir Levi - hosted by Nesanel Gantz.

Speakers will include:

Reb Ari Bensoussan · Dr. David Lieberman · Reb Yisroel Majeski · Reb Yonasan Schwartz · Reb Meir Sperling · Reb Motta Frank · Reb Eli Stefansky · Reb YY Jacobson · Reb Daniel Kalish · Reb Yehuda Mandel

With three separate concert kumzits performances by: Levi Falkowitz · Eitan Katz · Zusha

On Monday, August 19 the much-anticipated live Tu B’Av Together tefillah event will begin at 10 a.m. EST and continue for several hours, livestreamed online at TuBavTogether.com to the world.

Inspiration as well as the eight chapters of Tehillim will be led by the following rabbanim shlita: Rav Shlomo Cynamon · Rav David Ashear · Rav Eytan Feiner · Rav Dovid Goldwasser · Rav Joey Haber · Rav Nissan Kaplan · Rav Paysach Krohn · Rav Berel Lazar · Rav Yisroel Reisman · Rav Dovid Ozeri · Rav Fishel Schachter · Rav Efraim Twerski · Rav Yussie Zakutinsky

The following eight kapitlach will be recited:

(32,38,70,82,121,124,127,128)

At TuBavTogether.com, names can be submitted for tefillah for free to the minyan of talmidei chachamim in Amuka. Over the past year, Yad L’Achim has received hundreds of messages from people who got engaged since submitting their names to last year’s Tu B’Av Together tefillah. Last year, over 500,000 Jews across the world participated in the tefillah and live events.

To submit names for tefillah for free, download the chapters of Tehillim in advance, and watch the live events: Visit www.TuBavTogether.com or call Yad L’Achim (24/6) at 1-800-450-0339.

PARSHAS VAESCHANAN

DID YOU KNOW?

Hashem created the world in 6 days, and on the 7th day, He rested. Hashem commanded us to keep Shabbos as a day of rest. We refrain from actions involving creation. This allows us to focus on what matters most - davening, studying Torah, and spending time with family and friends.

IMAGINE

There once was a boy named Moishy who went to the local swimming pool one afternoon and after the lifeguard finished his initial instructions, Moishy raised his hand. “Can I bring my iPad into the pool?”, “No Moishy,” replied the lifeguard. “What about my lunch?”, “Food is not allowed in the pool, Moishy”. “My book?”, “nope.” To this Moishy replied, “This is absurd! I can’t do any of the things I like in the pool! That’s it, I’m going home!”, and off he went, missing out on a fun swimming excursion.

DELVING DEEPER

BRING IT HOME

What are some ways you can make Shabbos special?

Now this story seems quite silly, it’s quite obvious, that Moishy can’t bring any of these items into the pool. The iPad would break, the lunch would be ruined and so would the book! For Moishy to be able to have fun at the pool, he had to stop doing all those activities. Only then, would he be truly able to enjoy swimming. On Shabbos, 39 core actions aren’t allowed to be done. This seems crazy! Why can’t I do all the things I like?! Looking at the story of Moishy, we can understand. To truly enjoy Shabbos, one must take a break from all these activities, and only then can one truly feel and celebrate Shabbos to the fullest.

A TRUE STORY AS TOLD TO ESTY STEINMETZ

Who is wise? He who learns from every person. Pirkei Avos 4, 1

The emergency room was even busier than usual that night. The little girl I was examining was pale and shivered uncontrollably. Her parents reported that she couldn’t keep any food or liquid down.

I nodded. “Probably dehydration,” I explained to the concerned parents. “I’ll just hook her up to IV fluids and the doctor will be here shortly to talk with you.”

I wearily made my rounds to the next room, where a lanky teenager had a deep gash above his right eye.

I efficiently disinfected the wound before checking on my next patient, a thiry-two year old patient complaining of chest pain and shortness of breath.

I checked his heart rate and saturation level. The former was a little high, but the saturation was at 97. I assured him that a doctor would be in shortly.

Before continuing on, I glanced at my watch - it was close to 1:00 AM. That meant I had been working uninterrupted for almost five hours, save for a hurriedly downed cup of water on my way to page the doctor.

Everything seemed calm momentarily, so I quickly made my way to the nurse’s station for a quick coffee. I had just added a heaping spoonful of sugar to my coffee when my buzzer blared.

An emergency in room 9. An accident victim. I left the coffee on the table and ran, the tantalizing aroma wafting temptingly after me.

It turned out the patient had a concussion and some minor bone fractures. I hooked him up to IV and put in the order for x-rays. After seeing that the patient was calm and settling down to sleep, I returned to the nurse’s room for my patiently-waiting cup of coffee. I was not waiting so patiently. I longed for that shot of caffeine to clear my head after my long, tiring night. After that I would be ready for whatever the next few hours would bring.

When I got to the room, massaging my aching temples, the coffee was cold.

I spilled it and reached to make another one, when my buzzer startled me. Another emergency call. It seemed it was just not destined for me have a coffee tonight.

The call sounded serious - a middle-aged woman with a history of liver disease was hemorrhaging.

I put my weariness aside and all thoughts of a break out

of my mind as I hurried to room 23.

Every second was vital, so I barely had a chance to glance at her, but when I reached to attach a line to her arm, I noticed that every inch was covered in tattoos. No matter. I continued doing what I had to do to save her life. In the ER, we treat everyone equally - even patients who yell anti-semitic slogans while I prick their arms.

Fortunately, with the help of two doctors and an intern, we succeeded in stabilizing her, though her condition seemed dismal. I removed my gloves and checked on the patient one more time. She was sleeping, her chest rising and falling steadily. I decided to try for a coffee again.

This time I was lucky, and I managed to sip my coffee unhurriedly, grab a danish from the chessed room, and rest my aching feet for a few moments.

Energy restored, I made the rounds again. I checked the IV drip in the toddler’s room, and noted she was sleeping peacefully, roses blossoming in her previously sunken cheeks. Her parents were also dozing, so I went to the next room.

The boy with the gash had been discharged, and the patient with the chest pain was momentarily not in the room, having finally been taken for a CT scan.

The accident victim seemed to be in pain, so I put in a request for the doctor to approve more morphine and promised to be back soon.

When I reached the room of the woman with tattoos, I was surprised to see that her eyes were open.

Her hair was a washed-out blonde, streaked with orange highlights. Her face was translucent. And wherever I saw skin, I saw tattoos. I glanced at the name at the side of the bed: Marilyn Evanson.

“Hello Marilyn, how are you feeling?” I asked gently. She didn’t answer, just looked around blankly. Her face was impassive. I wondered if she didn’t realize the condition she was in, or she simply didn’t care.

“Is there anything I can do to make you more comfortable?” I tried again.

“Du bist a yid,” (you are a Jew) she said suddenly, so quietly that I was sure I had heard wrong. My heart rate accelerated, and my hands became clammy.

“What did you say?” I asked shakily.

“Du bist a yid,” she repeated, stronger this time. “You are a Yid. I am also a Yid.”

And as I stared in shock and stupefaction, the tears started rolling down her previously blank, impassive face.

“I know I’m not going to live for much longer. I’m a sick woman. I have no children, no family, no nothing,” she choked out between wrenching sobs.

I stood uncertainly, with tears forming in my eyes as well. I gleaned at the screen; her vitals were steady but weak.

“Marilyn, there’s still hope,” I tried to reassure her. “You can still recover.”

She continued speaking as if I hadn’t spoken. I realized that she was lost in her own world of memories.

“Why did I abandon Yiddishkeit?” She moaned. Her words were soft, reproachful, and laced with so much guilt and torment that I felt my heart shattering into pieces.

“Why did I forget about the Ribono shel olam? Why, why, why?”

I stood there transfixed, tears rolling down my face as well.

“Now it’s too late for me,” she continued in an agonizing whisper.

And then she looked up, eyes bright in her pale face.

“You are a Yid,” she exclaimed again, in wonder and awe. “Can you give me a hug?”

Her tone was plaintive and oh-so hopeful. I battled for a moment - ER nurses know never to get emotionally attached to patients. But this was a dying Jewish woman, who wanted a connection with a frum Jew in her final days. How could I deny her that?

With quick strides I crossed over to bed and leaned down to the frail, tattoo-covered woman in the bed. I wrapped my arms around her for a long moment and she cried into my shoulders.

Then I gently disentangled myself. “Marilyn, stay strong,” I whispered. “I have to go to my other patients, but I’ll be back.”

I left the room and, but contrary to what I told her, I didn’t go to the other rooms; instead, I found a quiet corner to mourn Marilyn. She was probably Miriam once, a frum, happy young girl with a future. And now… she was an empty, pitiful shell. When all my tears were spent I quickly dried my face and transported myself back to the bustling ER.

We will be closed for the 9 days starting $60 per pair

Duty was calling. In the ER, there was no time for luxuries like tears. During my shift the next night, I visited Marilyn again. She was having trouble breathing and was attached to more machines than the previous day.

I showed her the kosher food I had brought her from the chessed room and her eyes lit up.

When I came next, Marilyn was not in her usual room in the ER - she had been transferred to hospice.

I knew from the doctors that Marilyn was not expected to survive for long. There was nothing much that could be done for her sick, ravaged body.

I continued bringing her little treats and gifts every time I came, infusing her with a little bit of hope.

Every time I visited, her eyes would light up, and she would smile a melancholy smile.

Once, after my shift was over, I offered to say Shema with her. She nodded softly, eyes filling up with tears. I said the words slowly, one by one, and she clearly and fluently enunciated every word after me, as if she had been saying the timeless words for the past 40 years. As if the 40 years of disconnect had never happened.

The room was silent for a charged moment when we finished. I held her hand, squeezed tight.

“I’m sure our Father up above is very proud of you now,” I whispered through the lump in my throat.

She smiled peacefully, eyes clear and full of light. “Now I can die in peace,” she said softly. “Thank you.”

I embraced her again, feeling the frailty of her physical body and yet drawing strength from her courageous spirit.

Marilyn was so grateful for everything I did and every little gift I brought, so appreciative of the time we spent together. I felt so lucky that I had this opportunity to sweeten Marilyn’s final days.

A few days later, when I came for my shift, Marilyn’s room was empty.

“Last night she went into distress and her systems started shutting down.” The doctor explained. “I’m sorry to tell you this, but Marilyn is not alive anymore.”

I nodded stoically, but when I was alone in the room, the tears came. Teras for myself, for Marilyn’s suffering in her final moments, tears of regret that I hadn’t been there with her at that auspicious time.

And then, as I started to come to terms with events, cleansing tears, for Marilyn was no longer suffering, no longer at battle. Marilyn’s neshama was finally at peace.

Marilyn was gone.

But the lesson she taught me about the power of a Yiddishe neshama, about the

that can never be extinguished, lives on.
