Recap: Tzippy resolves to make tomorrow different for Bruchi, as she realizes how much pain Bruchi must be in.

Numb with shock after Mr. Seidman’s call, Mrs. Gordon tries to figure out what to do next. Nachman suggests calling Rav Berger, a rav they’ve asked for advice in the past, to ask a shaila.

Shmiel Kleinberg can’t fall asleep, his thoughts torturing him in the darkness of his jail cell.

Josh Lugoff contemplates how he’ll reappear on the world stage in a new identity..

CHAPTER 43

“Nah, I’m sure it’s not going to be better than Ice Cream Parlor,” Tzippy asserted to Mali.

Mali’s eyes sparkled. “But come on! We have to check it out, they’re giving out free samples!”

Chevy sidled over to them. “What’re you talking about?” she asked.

Mali turned to her. “Did you hear about this new ice

cream store opening on the avenue?”

“Yeah, I did hear something. It’s supposed to be called La Crème, right?”

“Yes, and I heard that they’re giving out free samples today for their grand opening! Right, you want to come check it out after school?”

Chevy’s expression mirrored Mali’s excitement.

“Sounds like so much fun!”

“Nah, there’s going to be a million people there. We should davka go to the Ice Cream Parlor today, cuz no one’s going to be there.”

“Hey, I didn’t know you like the Ice Cream Parlor so much,” Chevy teased.

Tzippy’s gaze traveled a few feet toward the door, where Bruchi had just walked in.

“Bruchi,” she called before she could think twice, “where would you go?”

Bruchi looked up, too surprised to issue a sharp brushoff.

“Did you hear about this new store La Crème?” Mali

asked eagerly, immediately picking up on Tzippy’s thread.

“Yeah,” Bruchi said, cautiously. “It’s supposed to be really cool.”

She resisted the urge to flick off Mali’s excitement with a snobbish damper.

“You heard about it?” Chevy asked, surprised. A second later, she looked like she wished she could take back her words.

“Yeah, my aunt works in a cool interior design place, and they did the store. She told me about it.”

There was a short silence of admiration. Bruchi was, as she had always been, the first to know and hear about anything of interest in their eighth grade class.

But this time, as she shared her insider info, her supercilious air had evaporated.

Which left room for the expressions of respect on her friends’ faces.

“That’s amazing!” Mali breathed.

“What did she say about it?”

“She was telling me how the theme color of ice cream stores are all pink. Like when you think of ice cream, you just think of pink, right?

So this ice cream store decided to be different, and they’re all in light blue and white. Like a sky.”

“We totally have to go see it,” Tzippy said.

Chevy laughed. “A second ago you were complaining that it’s going to be packed.”

“And you said they for sure don’t have better stuff than the Ice Cream Parlor.”

“Of course they’re going to have better stuff than the Ice Cream Parlor,” Bruchi asserted, her old self-confidence showing. “They’re going to be much fancier. They’re going to have this Italian gelato ice cream that’s supposed to be really good, in all different flavors. That’s their main thing.”

“That’s it, we better go. I really like the Ice Cream Parlor, but they definitely don’t have gelato,” Tzippy said. “I’m totally convinced. La Crème, anyone coming with me?”

She looked at all three of the girls equally, including Bruchi.

“Of course, I’m only begging you

to come with me for the last ten minutes,” Mali laughed.

“Yeah, I’ll come check it out, totally,” Chevy said.

Bruchi, seeing that she was the only one left, shrugged. “Would be cool to see it,” she said offhandedly. “Though who wants to push for a free sample with the other hundred people who are going to come today.”

“Let’s go right after school,” Tzippy said, ignoring Bruchi’s comment. “We’ll just check it out. It’s for sure gonna be a matziv!”

“Yup!” Mali agreed, ever effervescent. Chevy smiled.

Bruchi looked down.

Tzippy hoped she wasn’t regretting that she’d agreed to come. It would be nice to have Bruchi back, except this time on equal footing with Tzippy and her friends.

Would Bruchi actually deign to join them, though, when it hadn’t been her initiative and she hadn’t gotten to hand-pick the girls who would join the outing? Had she mellowed enough over the last two weeks?

There was only one way to find out.

Where did the expression, “face the music,” come from? Shaina Gordon wondered idly in the back of her mind as she walked briskly towards her boss’s office.

She was on her way to do just that, though she had no idea what kind of music she would be facing.

If you would have asked Mrs. Gordon right then if she was nervous, she would have said no, because she didn’t feel nervous. But she did feel a tightness in her stomach that probably wouldn’t go away until this mess was cleared up.

Because that was what this was, the kind of mess that would put Shayale’s carrot-throwing shenanigans to shame. If it was hard to scrub sticky carrot from the soup messes from the floor, why did she think that the clean-up job with Mr. Seidman would go any easier?

Although Rav Bergman had said that she was within rights to have made the decision she made, he

had felt that she owed her boss an apology. Which meant that this was bound to be awkward.

She knocked on the door that was slightly ajar, and Mr. Seidman called, “Come in,” though with a question mark at the end that indicated he wasn’t sure who was actually at the door.

Mrs. Gordon pushed the door open and left it that way, taking a chair opposite Mr. Seidman.

Seeing her, Mr. Seidman nodded. “Thank you for coming,” he said. Mrs. Gordon cleared her throat, but couldn’t think of anything to say.

“Let’s get right to it,” Mr. Seidman said. “I’ve always been under the impression that you are completely devoted to our school, and that devotion has definitely done Bnos Golda good. But it seems that although I hadn’t ever heard anything from you, you’ve been unhappy enough with your position to seek employment elsewhere.”

The situation, summed up in a few sentences.

“First of all, I’d like to apologize for the fact that you heard about my decision in the way that you did.” Mrs. Gordon said, her voice coming across as confident as it always did. “I’d like to clear up the impression that might have made. The truth is that I have always been very devoted to Bnos Golda’s success, and my role in this school has always been a real source of satisfaction to me.”

Mr. Seidman’s expression was skeptical, and it seemed he was about to interject. Before he could do that, Mrs. Gordon continued speaking.

“The considerations that came up this year which caused me to make the decision to look for another job, had little to do with the loyalty I have to Bnos Golda. Although this school is very beloved to me, and I would love to keep building it to be the very best it can be,” Mrs. Gordon paused, so as not to dilute the message, “In the plainest words I can say it in, I feel my family has to come first.”

“And this job has been coming at the expense of your family?”

Mrs. Gordon set her jaw. “Well, it is always difficult, as the mother of a large family, bli ayin hara, to juggle the demands of both home and school.

As my family grows, that difficulty increases. This year, for various reasons, was a turning point, and it seemed my next reasonable step was to yes, look for a different job.”

“So you’re saying that you felt your family was losing out because of your job here, and that it was too difficult to juggle both?”

Leave it to a man to say it like it is. Hearing the bald truth made Mrs. Gordon swallow, and all her injured inferiority complexes rose to the fore.

She forced herself not to become defensive. Mr. Seidman was not trying to say anything derogatory, that was for sure, even if it felt that way to her.

“Right,” she said simply.

“If I may be so forward, and I understand you may not want to answer this, but according to the information I got, which seems accurate, you plan to take a different, very demanding job next year. How do you explain that decision in light of what you just told me? Is there something specific about your job as principal that’s making you unhappy enough to leave?”

If she hadn’t been nervous before this meeting, she had obviously forgotten what Mr. Seidman could be like.

And probably, Nachman had done too good of a job calming her down. Though none of their carefully prepared, slick words were going to answer Mr. Seidman’s question right now.

She threw everything she had been planning to say out the window and answered off the cuff.

“Well, yes, I’ll be honest. Being principal at Bnos Golda means dealing

with many school-related issues outside of school hours. There’s the responsibility of ‘the buck stops here’ which means that staff members, parents in the student body, and every individual that is somehow affiliated with Bnos Golda, brings their issues to me. The need to be on top of every nitty-gritty issue in the school frankly takes up too much headspace, and eats up far more of my free time than I ever imagined.”

Mr. Seidman was leaning back in his chair, looking away from Mrs. Gordon. But from the way he was clutching his pen in his hand close to his chin, it appeared that he was focusing on every word she said.

As she finished, he leaned forward and began clicking the pen open, then closed.

“I hear that,” Mr. Seidman said. Mrs. Gordon gaped, her mouth opening. A second later, she caught herself and shut her mouth firmly. Was that all he was going to say? Was it going to be so easy?

“To be honest, the school is also growing, and I realize that the demands have been increasing steadily as well.”

Mrs. Gordon blinked. Was she hearing right?

“But if I’m being completely honest with you, I can attribute a big part of that growth to your dedication. I’ve always known that parents choose Bnos Golda for the effort you’ve put in to create this school’s reputation for high standards and a warm environment. And if you left Bnos Golda, it would be a terrible blow to our school.”

So that was it. He had been buttering her up so that he could now guilt her into staying.

Mrs. Gordon lifted her chin, about to respond, but once again, Mr. Seidman beat her to it.

“But I understand that a lot of unnecessary responsibility has been thrust onto your plate. So I’d like to make an offer.”

Mrs. Gordon snapped her lips shut once again.

“What if we hired an assistant principal who could deal with a lot of the nittygritty issues you’ve been mentioning? And of course, I understand that you’re probably getting a salary increase at the other job you accepted. We would offer to match that as well.”

When Mrs. Gordon still didn’t respond, he looked up and said, “Would you consider that kind of offer?”

Mrs. Gordon finally found her voice, and said, “Well, it does sound like that could solve a lot of the issues,” she said.

She paused, because she was unsure of how to phrase the burning question in her mind.

What had happened to the tight-fisted administrator she had always known? Why was he suddenly offering her half of his kingdom just so she would keep her job?

Mr. Seidman, realizing what the question mark hanging in the air was all about, fidgeted with his pen again.

Mrs. Gordon tried to phrase it as delicately as possible. “I understand that an assistant principal would mean an additional salary for Bnos Golda.”

She didn’t say, “and where is that money going to come from?” but she could see that Mr. Seidman caught her reference.

ESTHER RAPAPORT

NINE A.M. IS A COMPLETELY FICTIONAL STORY WHICH TAKES PLACE FIFTY YEARS AFTER THE HOLOCAUST.

RECAP OF CHAPTER 31: A new package of Hanter’s paprika arrives at the Wrangels, and, as always, they search it carefully to make sure it doesn’t have any Jewish symbols or Hebrew words on it that would give them away.

Dena’s mother-in-law introduces her to Charna, a young woman Dena’s age. But Dena pretty much botches the possibility of a friendship with her, when Dena accuses the Jewish community in Vienna of being materialistic and not involved in ruchniyus enough.

CHAPTER THIRTY TWO

Newspaper article:

More than five years after Henry Sauter, an American biologist, discovered a special gene that is found in the blood of Jews and their descendants for at least five generations hence, finally, the C&D Company has managed to develop a testing method for this gene. Scattering a certain substance in the air will detect those who have it.

The gene has been named “J1000,” and it was discovered randomly in private laboratory tests taken by the students at the University of Ohio in the United States of the Reich. Eighteen students out of 1,279 were found to have this specific gene. After extensive research, it was discovered that indeed, all eighteen students are descendants, in some form or another, of the known Semitic nation.

Already during the first stages of the gene study, the scientist Sauter spoke about developing a method where the carriers of this gene could be detected by scattering the contrast agent in the air.

“The next stage,” says C&D CEO Professor Herbert Sokol, “is to place detectors in central places, like main roads and shopping centers, and we hope that we can do this already at the end of this coming month. The significance of this achievement is the expansive implementation of thorough global testing, and separating those with this gene from the rest of the population.”

Sauter himself blesses C&D on their impressive accomplishment and notes that it is possible that they will use this substance in additional ways, like by using helicopters to scatter it over places with large populations. And so, within a few years, the world will march toward a new, completely safe future.

“A new, completely safe future.” Babbe folded the newspaper and pushed it onto the windowsill. “Children, notice one thing: how much they continue to be afraid of us. Years have passed since, in their view, they triumphed over the Jewish people. They don’t even know we exist…” She sighed and pointed to the newspaper that was slipping to the floor, though no one made the effort to pick it up. “And still, they are traumatized at the idea that there might still be Jews in existence.”

“Are you afraid, Babbe?” Naomi asked. For some reason, her eyes were fixed on the door, which was opposite the entrance to the preschool at the end of the corridor. No, she could not think of helicopters coming just when “her” children were playing outside. No!

“Afraid? Of what?”

“Of this substance. Of the helicopters that might come…” Naomi straightened the edge of the tablecloth and looked at her mother, who was mixing salad in a bowl.

“I remember reading about it in an article a few years ago,” Rechel said with a sigh. “I didn’t sleep for nights after that.”

“So who needs to read this newspaper?” Babbe grew serious.

“And besides, who brought it here now? At melaveh malkah, we should be telling stories of tzaddikim, not of reshaim! And no, I’m not afraid, Naomi. I’ve seen so much in my life, that many of these kinds of things don’t scare me anymore. And listen to me well, everyone: No matter what, one way or another, the ones who’ll prevail in the end will be us. Not them.”

Binyamin didn’t say a thing. He silently chewed on the roll his mother had baked for melaveh malkah. This was what Bernard must have been talking about. Now he remembered that article he’d read when he was younger, about the biologist and the gene. And it had scared him pretty badly. That was when he’d realized, for the first time, how their existence in a mountainous, forested corner of the world was so miraculous, and that on the outside, there was danger lying in wait for them at every corner. Ultimately, he had seen that their blessed routine had continued, and he’d calmed down. But what a crazy world surrounded them!

His mother brought cups of tea to the table. “You’re quiet today,” she whispered to him, glancing at her son-in-law Aryeh, who was immersed in a conversation with her father, his grandfather.

“I’m tired,” Binyamin said, taking one of the steaming cups.

“You’ve been working too hard these past two weeks.”

“It’s okay, Mamme. Really, I’m fine, baruch Hashem.”

“I want you to make a mezuman and go home to sleep,” she said, studying him with that same worried expression. “I’ll try to be there soon. Is this because of Tatte’s notebooks?”

“Tatte’s notebooks?” He stirred the steaming tea carefully. “No, unfortunately I hardly had a chance to look at them.”

“Have you seen anything special there, besides for what he wrote about learning?”

For a moment, he raised curious eyes to her, and then lowered them. “No.”

As he walked home ten minutes later, in the darkness, Binyamin pondered his mother’s words. He had to get hold of the missing notebook, the one his mother was so terrified of. Was she the one who had hidden it?

It was not necessarily a notebook. Maybe it was just a sheet of paper. Or something else. It didn’t matter what. Clearly his father had written things as a result of something he’d heard or seen. Who knew what kind of dreadful plan he had been exposed to and had written down? Maybe it was a warning letter of some kind that he wanted to convey.

It was possible that this was what caused his untimely passing. And if that was the case, then it was more accurate to say…his murder.

Binyamin arrived home and got ready for bed, sure that he’d dream all night about his father. But instead, all he saw in his sleep were terrible scenes playing out, with helicopters appearing in the skies above Samson Lager, spraying clear puffs of air. And then, as the substance betrayed the fact that they were Jews, the nearly 200 people who lived there suddenly came down with either a strong virus that caused nausea and vomiting, or their hair began glowing with a strange green sheen… Binyamin’s sleeping imagination really went wild!

Apparently, the J1000 article had spooked him more than he was ready to let on, and it pushed aside any thoughts about his father.

But when he awoke the next morning with aching muscles from

his fitful, tense sleep, Binyamin decided that this was just another reason why he had to discover what had really happened to his father.

Would Babbe agree to help him and get the old records from the infirmary?

***

“Your baking is not bad at all!” Charna complimented Dena on her visit to Dena’s house, as she delicately chewed on the chocolate coconut cake.

This time, the visit did include the children, and Dena learned that her Duvi and Charna’s son Yudi knew each other a bit from cheder. Within three minutes, the ice broke; the boys were sitting and working together, building a whole city with one of the complex building toys that Bentzy’s mother had bought. Dena took down a few cars from the shelf to add to their creation.

“One of the best things I have in this house is the space,” Dena said, arranging the cloth napkins on the table at which they were seated. “In Israel, I had a two-room apartment and a porch—that was it.”

“That’s really small,” her guest marveled. “Where did the kids play?”

“In the dining room, the kitchen, my bedroom…”

“And where did they sleep?”

“In the dining room. Wait, I have a few pictures!” She smiled as she stood up.

“Great, I love seeing pictures of homes in Eretz Yisrael!” Dena nodded and opened an upper cabinet. This time, she was very careful not to say anything that sounded conceited. She didn’t want to come across as arrogant, because she really wasn’t. It was obvious to her that the women in Vienna were wonderful—they loved Torah and Hashem—but she still had the feeling that even the wives of the most learned avreichim among them did not live the same beautiful and simple lives of those in Eretz Yisrael whom she had left behind.

“Here.” She put the album on the table and opened it. Duvi, at age one month, in the cradle near the window. Duvi, at two months, in an infant seat in the dining room. The infant seat had been sent by his loving grandmother from Vienna, as had the curtains hanging in the background. But Charna could not really get an idea of the tiny dimensions of the room and its old stone floor. She seemed surprised when she looked at the pictures, but exercising typical Viennese politeness, she didn’t say a word. She just turned the pages one by one.

“Hey!” At the sight of one of the pictures, she just couldn’t contain herself. There was little Duvi, sitting inside a clear plastic cage, and next to him was a figure with a black, threatening, distorted face. “What…what is this?”

“The Gulf War.” Dena smiled. “That’s me behind the mask.”

“Oh, right! We saw pictures here of those masks… So scary! We were so worried about you all then…”

“It really was scary. I remember my grandmother crying to my mother that she never thought her children and grandchildren would have to be afraid of gas… It was a war full of miracles.”

“And you weren’t afraid?”

“I was a little bit, for sure on the first night. But I was so busy just trying to manage it all that I hardly had time to think about the missiles.” She pointed to the picture. “Imagine having to

put a baby into this thing. And it wasn’t only that, right? Suddenly, his parents disappear, and instead, all the baby sees are these monstrous faces…” She laughed.

Charna laughed too. “How old was he there?”

“Almost two. But here he was already used to it. This was one of the last sirens.”

Duvi heard about the subject of conversation and joined them. “That’s me,” he said proudly, and pointed out the picture to his friend. “I was little. Look where they put me. We had a war!”

“A war?” Yudi Krieger asked, looking at the picture with interest. “Did you have a gun?”

“No, I had a box where I hid inside, because the Arabs wanted to kill us.”

“But the box is clear! So the Arabs could see you! How did it help?”

“Dunno.” Duvi mulled over this tough question. “I was so little then, even smaller than our Shloimy is, so I don’t really remember much.”

“I’m not little!” his brother protested from the rug.

“But in the end nothing happened to me, that’s all.” Duvi shrugged and smiled.

“Nothing happened to you because Hashem watched over you, and all the Yidden,” Dena interjected gently.

“Right! So I won over the Arabs, and baruch Hashem the war was over!” Duvi crowed triumphantly.

Yudi Krieger was thoughtful. “Don’t brag,” he said, after a few minutes. “We also had a war here in Austria, lots of years ago. The yemach-shemoniks almost killed my grandfather, you know? But in the end he didn’t, and baruch Hashem we also won!”

“Exactly.”

So, only her Israeli mother didn’t know how to make divine Viennese tortes, and only she, the Israeli daughter-inlaw, didn’t know how to make social connections. And she had destroyed the first attempt at friendship with her foolishness. What could she say? If Ima would have heard her now, she really would have been ashamed of her. Ugh. How much longer would it take for her mother-in-law to figure out that something had gone badly between her and Charna? And that for the most part, her daughter-in-law was to blame for it?

Dena forced herself to try to patch things up. “It really is a masterpiece of a cake. I would love to be able to bake on such a level.”

“In order to get to this level, you have to start from the bottom,” Bentzy’s mother said. “Charna herself is a gourmet cook, and I’m sure that being friends with her will help you with that.” She smiled broadly. “What do you say, Charna? You’ll agree to give Dena some good tips and recipes, won’t you?”

“Sure, of course,” Charna said, flashing a quick smile at Dena. To Dena’s surprise, it was not a triumphant smile, but a rather friendly one. “If she agrees to start from the beginning.”

UPON THE ALTAR OF KIDDUSH HASHEM. A fascinating and inspiring work, this book is a must-read for every thinking Jew. BY RAV ZALMAN HILLEL FENDEL Z"L

NEW!

WITHIN HOLINESS in the HOLOCAUST

In Holiness in the Holocaust, noted talmid chacham Rabbi Zalman Hillel Fendel z”l sheds light on the fundamental concept of what constitutes a death al kiddush Hashem—analyzing it and showing us the Torah wisdom of our revered gedolim, both of past generations and contemporary, on this elusive topic. Read awe-inspiring accounts of the final days and destruction of Litvishe and Chassidic towns across Europe, as so many Torah leaders and their communities prepared for their very final mitzvah. Understand the compelling connection between the Holocaust and the gezeirah of Purim; the striking similarities of the edict of Haman and Achashveirosh, and the Final Solution with the silence of the Western world; the significance of the word “Yehudi ” and its bearing on why all six million Jews who were killed during the Holocaust are considered harugei malchus

NEW!

Mashiach will come from the North... Leonora de Dabela knows this, and so she descends on Tzfat, intent on paving the way for the final Redemption. It is the only way she can redeem herself from the unspeakable acts of her past. She sends letter after letter to the Imperial Palace of Instanbul, all with one goal: to convince Suleiman the Magnificent to rebuild the wall of Jerusalem. And as Leonora begins shifting the bricks of change, she touches lives concealed underneath.

In this POWERFULLY RELEVANT HISTORICAL NOVEL , LEAH GEBBER weaves together three broken souls who must learn to bring down the walls around their hearts to make room for redemption. By author of Chains , Sisters Under Siege, Rocking Hors e and Map the Starlight .

Desert Sand Mountain PARSHA

Cut out the template. Place into the cup and cut to size, so that there is a full line of traveling camels around the cup.

With the orange and non-colored sand, create mountains in your container, following the camels, in order to know where to put each mountain.

With an acrylic marker, draw some sticks with circles on top to look like people sitting on top of the camels.

Tape your camels to the inside of your cup. Using an acrylic marker, trace the scene onto the outside of the container & let it dry.

Layer the 3 different colors of blue in thin layers to create your sky.

Admire the traveling camels in the desert landscape.

Place 1 cup of sand into a bowl and color it orange using your dye, then divide the rest of the sand into 4 containers. Color 3 of them different shades of blue leaving one non-colored.

Once the entire container is full, let it set for 5 minutes, then fill the top with a thin layer of glue. Cover and close tightly.

PARSHAS DEVARIM

IMAGINE

DID YOU KNOW?

Throughout the Jewish people’s travels in the desert, they encountered many challenges and difficulties along the way.

You are learning how to swim. It feels scary and challenging because you haven’t yet learned how to keep yourself afloat in the water. The first time in the water, you may feel nervous and begin to panic. The second time, you try to relax and slowly become more comfortable, practicing the skills the teacher taught you. Even when you slip at the pool one day, you can get up and continue back in the water. The day has finally come, you finished your lessons and now you’re an expert swimmer. Looking back at all the challenges, you realize that to learn this new skill, you had to overcome all these difficulties to reach the end goal. Now, not only do you know how to swim, but you are also confident enough to help teach a friend!

DELVING DEEPER

BRING IT HOME

Think of a challenging period in your life. What did you gain from that difficult time that later helped you?

After their journey in the desert, the Jewish people were tired and weakened by all their struggles. Facing the future with a smile was difficult for them. Moshe recounted all their travels, showing them that all the challenges they went through, were put in place by Hashem from the beginning. This was to help them be prepared for their arrival in Eretz Yisrael. Once they realized that all the journeys and hardships had brought them closer to Eretz Yisrael, it gave them insight to appreciate the difficulties they experienced. We can learn from this that even though we can’t change the past, we can look at the experiences Hashem gives us and see how everything is all part of a bigger plan to help us reach our final goal.

A TRUE STORY AS TOLD TO ESTY STEINMETZ

Pirkei Avos 2, 5

Rabbi Elazar of Modi'in would say: One who profanes the kadoshim, degrades the Festivals, humiliates his friend in public, abrogates the covenant of our father Abraham (i.e., circumcision), or who interprets the Torah contrary to its true intent---although he may possess Torah knowledge and good deeds, he has no share in the World to Come.

A human being’s dignity is in the balance.

The air is thick with tension.

Who will stand up to help him save face?

I know you won’t shame someone in public, but do you have the courage to spare someone from humiliation?

Mazel Tov! It’s a boy!

Chana rubbed her eyes as she stared in awe at the

bundle of joy wrapped in a hospital blanket in a lucite bassinet. This was her third son, yet, the ecstasy she felt, along with the tremendous gratitude to the One Above only intensified with each successful healthy birth.

Eight days later, Gavriel was officially a member of Klal Yisroel. Zaidy Brown, Chana’s father-in-law, had been the sandek and, with a fair share of prejudice, marveled at his grandchild’s unusual beauty. “May he grow up to be a tzaddik, a talmid chacham, a source of nachas to Yossi and you and all of us!” he boomed. A lavish bris seudah followed and then, when the fanfare faded away, came the sleepless nights.

Gavriel was indeed a charming little boy, but he did give his mother a fair share of headaches. Like any other newborn, he howled and kicked, spit up and whimpered but with time, settled down. Slowly, maybe a bit too slowly, he began reaching the typical milestones.

“Chana, don’t you think it’s time Gavriel should be saying more than just Mommy?” Faigy, Chana’s sister, a speech therapist, asked her gently.

Those words pierced her heart like a dagger, despite the soft, soothing tone Faigy used to voice her concern.

“Look, he’s only 16 months old. Some kids develop later than others, no? Didn’t Einstein start speaking fully at age 5?”

“That’s true. But I’m still worried. Did you notice that he

sometimes has that blank look on his face? Come here, Gavriel. Come to Tanta Faigy.”

The cherubic, chubby toddler gazed at his loving Tanta, the one who visited almost every day after work. He smiled and squealed, staring at some distant point in space.

Faigy winced.

“That’s what I mean. It could be nothing major, but I would check it out.”

“I hear you. Let me think about it.”

Faigy is 22 years old and has no children of her own. Does she realize that not every child fits neatly into the charts? Or maybe she does have a point? •••

It was one week later that Chana faced the music. Somber music. Serious music. Music that would play in the background for a long time.

Autism. It didn’t take long for the ugly label to be pasted onto her angelic little boy. Gavriel wouldn’t follow in the same pattern as his older brothers. He wouldn’t be traveling the well-worn path of playgroup - upsherin - cheder - chumash seudah - mishnayosGemara and so on.

As painful as it was for her to take the first shaky steps into brand new territory, Chana was grateful she lived in 2010, and not in Einstein’s times. Special children were no longer hidden in the closet; they were schooled in custom institutions with professional programs that pushed them to maximize their unique potential.

“When Gavriel has an upsherin, he’s gonna go to Rebbe Kurtz?” Meir asked Chana one day, eyeing his brother’s long, auburn curls.

She stroked Meir’s cheek, as she repeated the words she had said countless times before. It was good for her to say them, it was good for her to hear them, even if she was the one saying them.

“Meir, remember I told you that Gavriel needs to go to a special school that will help him learn in a special way?”

Meir nodded, his eyes growing big.

“Gavriel might go to Rebbe Kurtz the day he turns 3, and he’ll give out the pekelach. But after that, he won’t go to cheder. He’ll continue going to GEMS, his special school. Maybe one day, he will join a regular cheder.”

“Oh.”

That was a lot for a 7-year-old to swallow.

“Okay, at least he’ll see my old Rebbe and my cheder. And I’ll also get a pekalah, right, Mommy?”

“Yes, tzaddik.”

Each child was a pekalah. Some were filled with sweeter stuff than others. Some with nuts that are harder to crack. Yet all were wrapped with care and love by the Creator of them all. •••

With Yossi home for the day, Chana was free to get a headstart on the pre-camp shopping. The list was long; Meir and Sholom would be leaving next week and there was a long list of basics that needed to be bought.

Socks. Pants. Shirts. Bathing suits. Laundry bags. Suntan lotion.

Enjoying the pleasant spring weather, Chana weaved her way through the heavy pedestrian traffic as she ticked item after item off the long list. The bags were starting to weigh her down and she paused for a moment to look around.

How could she not have noticed it before? Those precious Chumash seudah boys, marching proudly near their beaming mothers and grandmothers. The crowns and costumes were varied, with many different logos printed onto the getup. But who cared? These delicate little saplings had begun their journey of Torah learning.

“Dovid, do you want this Aleph-Beis

puzzle? Or maybe this one, with the boy holding the Sefer Torah?” a middle-aged woman asked the chocolate-smeared child standing next to him.

“The Aleph-Beis puzzle is too babyish, Bobbi! I’m already up to Chumash!”

Grandmother and Mother giggled and Sister pecked his cheek.

Chana couldn’t help but feel that familiar stab of jealousy. Her mind knew it was pointless to think this way and that Hashem had a master plan for her and for her 8-year-old Gavriel and who knew whose Avoda was bigger and all the other mussar schmuessen she had heard, both unsolicited and on her own initiative. But her emotions had a way of outshouting these voices, of making her feel angry, ashamed, envious and despondent. Gavriel was making great strides, she could not deny it. But he had never celebrated a chumash seudah. At age 8, his vocabulary was sparse. His speech was slow and stilted. Slowly, ever so slowly, he was mastering the AlephBeis. And that little munchkin called it babyish?

Chana grabbed a tissue from her purse and wiped the naughty tears from the corner of her eyes. Swallowing the lump in her throat, she set out to the pharmacy to stock up on some more camp essentials. Baruch Hashem, she had two unspecial boys to shop for. And Meir’s Bar Mitzvah was just around the corner.

“What a Talmid Chacham!”

“He spoke so well!”

“And a siyum also!”

Chana beamed as the compliments came flying from every direction. She watched Meir listen to his Rebbe’s drasha. Handsome and eidel, a glow of purity radiating from his face, he sat like a king, flanked by his Zeides, the Rav of their Shul and the Menahel of his cheder.

“....great hopes for this Chassan

Bar Mitzvah. Meir is one of our star students, a masmid who loves to learn. With such devoted and erliche parents, I’m sure he will grow up to be a real Talmid Chacham and a source of pride to his choshuve mishpacha.”

Faigy squeezed Chana’s hand as they peeked through the curtains and watched the Rebbe shake Meir’s hand. Gavriel suddenly appeared from beneath the mechitzah and tugged at her skirt.

“Mommy, when are they giving dessert?”

“Soon, Gavriel. I think there’s ice cream. Sit down nicely next to Uncle Hershy. He’ll make sure the waiter doesn’t forget to give you, okay?”

“But when are they going to bring it already?”

“Soon. Hey look, I think I see a waiter coming with a tray of ice cream. See?” Chana pointed at the left corner of the hall and Gavriel followed her finger.

“Yeah, I see.”

Gavriel crouched down and slid under the mechitza, heading straight for his place near his uncle, Faigy’s husband.

For a fleeting moment, she wondered what Gavriel’s Bar Mitzvah would be like. Would he also run over and ask about the dessert?

Pinchas stared into the mirror and repeated the lines once more.

“Thank you Totty and Mommy for always being there for me. From when I was born until now, you have done so much for me and I can never thank you enough. Thank you Rabbi Grinspan, Mrs. Berl and the wonderful staff at Yeshivas Ahavas Torah for the excellent education you have given me. And of course, thank you Hashem for all the chesed you have done for me, do for me and will continue to do for me. Shehechiyanu….lazman hazeh.”

“Super!”

“Hooray!”

“You did it!”

The cheering squad, aka, the Berger siblings, were at it again.

“I didn’t do it! I said it!”

Miriam and Velvel exchanged a glance. Chaim snickered for a millisecond, until he was jabbed in the elbow by Yitzchok.

“B-but now is not the real thing. My Bar Mitzvah is in 48 hours. Who says I’ll remember it?”

Pinchas’s hands were filled with cold sweat. Never mind that he would be the seventh in his class to deliver the same speech.

Never mind that his teacher would practice with the class several times each week.

Never mind that he had repeated this one-minute recitation about a gazillion times, both in school and at home and even in the playground. Pinchas was terrified… and eager at the same time.

Mrs. Berger was equally nervous. The crowd; so many pairs of eyes looking straight at him. The food; complete portions and scraps of leftovers. The crumpling of napkins and scraping of chairs. Would he be able to concentrate on the words with all this distraction going on?

Of course, she pushed these thoughts aside and patted Pinchas on the back.

“Pinchas, we’re sure you’ll do a great job. Now, let’s head to bed so we can be well-rested in time for your Bar Mitzvah. I think we have 47 hours left!”

•••

“And now, we’d like to call upon the Bar Mitzvah Bochur to say a few words.”

A hush fell over the crowd. Even the women’s section was pindrop silent. Pinchas rose from his seat and adjusted the mike. He looked around the room and spotted his brothers. There were his neighbors. And his classmates.

His throat suddenly felt parched. He swallowed hard and started to speak.

“Ummm…”

The tension was thick.

No one moved.

Except for Gavriel.

Skinny and short, he slipped under the head table and found a spot right behind Pinchos.

“Thank you Totty and Mommy,” he whispered into Pinchas’s ear.

A treble voice was heard on the mike.

“Thank you Totty and Mommy..”

“... for always being there for me,” Gavriel continued.

“... for always being there for me,” Pinchas echoed.

“From when I was born until now,” whispered Gavriel.

“From when I was born until now,” copied Pinchas.

“You have done so much for me and,” said Gavriel quietly, followed by Pinchas on the mike.

With Gavriel’s prompting, Pinchas got through the entire speech, gaining confidence as they went along.

“..lazman hazeh,” Pinchas finished, the relief palpable on his face.

A thunderous applause followed. There wasn’t a dry eye in the audience. •••

Chana clutched at her coffee as she cradled the phone with her chin.

“Really? My Gavriel got up and did that?”

“Yup! And what a hug he gave Pinchas when he finished the speech. What a tzaddik.”

She didn’t know what Gavriel’s Bar Mitzvah would look like or if he would ever achieve greatness in its standard definition. But special? That he was, without a doubt. •

BE FIT WITH BENEFIT

QHi. Thank you for your interesting responses to questions. Here is my question for you: I am not new to dieting. I am wondering what your take is on skipping meals. I do know the formula of calories in and calories out. Based on that, skipping meals like breakfast or lunch should help me lose faster. Is that the case, or do you not recommend skipping meals?

AI hear your question and I understand where you are coming from.

I will respond to your question from my personal perspective and from my professional experience. Whether you are a teen, woman, mother or grandmother, your body must be fed respectfully. We are not like cows grazing in the fields all day. We are human beings that deserve to eat on time and at scheduled intervals. No, we don’t need to graze all day, but yes, we do must eat at set timings so that our bodies can adjust and expect to feel hungry at times and satisfied at others.

I am a firm believer that your body needs to “trust” you in order for weight loss to occur. Hashem in his infinite kindness, created our bodies with natural mechanisms that will protect us. Cortisol, is our flight or fight hormone. It is here to protect us. When one’s body feels “unprotected” or “at risk”, your cortisol will naturally spike, making weight loss harder. If your body is feeling at risk, or in jeopardy, it will fight you, and naturally want to protect you, by holding back all vestiges and storages of fat to stay alive. Your body can feel “at risk” for multiple reasons, such as if you are skipping meals, exercising too intensely, or if you are in a stressful situation such as in a difficult job or relationship. However, once your body realizes that you are in a good and safe place, with healthy food coming every 2-3 hours, on set and familiar intervals, that feeling of trust and safety is established, and your body can agree to let go of excess fat it no longer needs. That is when true and real weigh loss actually happens.

Now that you have the psychological background, I can address your question. You want your body to trust you.

Continuously. Especially as a woman, our bodies must function optimally in multiple capacities. If you were to look at athletes or runners, after much time of running themselves ragged, certain pivotal bodily functions cease. Why is that? Because their body is trying to protect them. Runners trying to heal, need to teach their bodies to trust them again, and rebuilding their food plan is critical.

Skipping meals from time to time? It happens. It is a typical and normal reoccurrence. But should that be your perspective for weight loss? No! What will happen at that point will be, that your body will enter adaptive thermogenesis, otherwise referred to as “starvation mode” which involves the body responding to reduced calorie intake by reducing calorie expenditure to maintain energy balance and prevent starvation. In other words, it slows you down.

While it may be tempting to deprive yourself of food, your body will suffer. After prolonged starvation, your body’s metabolism may slow down, your body may not function properly, and your mental health may decline. Though you may lose weight initially, you’ll likely gain it back.

If you’re struggling with establishing healthy eating habits or find yourself developing concerning eating behaviors, work with a health professional who can help you live at your healthiest. I hope this answers your question!
