By Sara Chana Silverstein, IBCLC
Women often come into my office and say, "Sara Chana, it's just not fair that I struggle with nursing while none of my friends or sisters do!" Let me spill the tea: it's not true that all your friends aren't struggling behind the scenes. I've had countless women confide, "I've suffered with my last four kids. I keep it quiet, but I just can't take the pain and I never know if my child is full!"
The ones who have it 'easy' are shouting it from the rooftops while the rest of us silently lose our minds in the background. But why would nursing be difficult? Isn't it natural? Aren't babies born knowing how to suckle? Spoiler alert: it's a learned behavior for most babies, just like trying to color within the lines or hopping on one foot.
Here's the scoop: all healthy babies can swallow, but to nurse correctly, they must master the suck-swallow-breathe pattern. They must build the 51 muscles in their mouth, and their tongue needs to perfect a little peristaltic dance. And get this: to get full at a feeding, they must swallow 450 times at each feed! Yes, 450!
So, what can you do? Get help! A well-trained lactation consultant can teach you how to guide your baby to build their mouth muscles and coordinate them with their tongue to transfer milk.
The good news? With proper guidance, most babies can become quick, efficient nursers! So, don't sweat it—help is out there, and soon you and your baby will be nursing champs, ready to take on the world, one gulp at a time!

Recap: Mrs. Gordon gets a call from Mr. Seidman, who is upset to have heard about Mrs. Gordon’s new job.
Josh Lugoff, now in Iraq as Plan C kicks in after Tee leaks Finance2’s data, contemplates how to make progress on his goal of world dominion.
Four of Bruchi’s eighth-grade classmates are studying together. They wonder aloud how Bruchi is doing.
CHAPTER 41
After all the girls had left, and Tzippy had waved the last cheery goodbye, she thought about Bruchi again.
Snuggling on the couch in the quiet of the night, Tzippy wondered what it felt like to be Bruchi.
Then she shuddered.
It must feel awful.
More awful than awful could describe.
Not only was Bruchi’s father arrested, in jail, but her own classmates had turned their backs on her and
were ignoring her like she was a piece of dirt.
And she, Tzippy, was just going along with the gang.
She remembered Bruchi’s stiff shoulders and erect bearing on that first day back in school. Her posture seemed to scream, “Leave me alone!” but maybe that was only because she was afraid? Afraid that her classmates were looking down at her and talking about her behind her back?
What would Tzippy do if she were in such a situation? Surely, she would be prickly too, even as she needed the support so badly.
Tomorrow, Tzippy resolved, would be different.
If she hadn’t been, well, Mrs. Gordon, she would have been shrieking.
She would have been wailing, “So what do I do now?” and “I don’t believe it,” over and over.
She would have been fantasizing about running away from her job.
Instead, as the practical, reliable principal she was,
“IF YOU REALLY CareD ABOUT ME, YOU WOULD...”
Red flag B Proceed with caution
Maybe I should speak to someone?
Our trained advocates are standing by, waiting for your call. We are here for you. You are not alone. And you don’t even have to say your name.
she was focusing on damage control.
“No, Mr. Seidman, of course this wasn’t final. Yes, you’re right, I definitely should have discussed my concerns with you first.”
Nachman poked a wondering face out of his study, but Mrs. Gordon ignored him.
“Tomorrow is fine. I’ll be in your office, and we can discuss it.”
Numb, Mrs. Gordon hung up.
“Was that what I think it was?”
Nachman asked after a full thirty seconds of quiet had passed.
Shaina Gordon shrugged, not wanting to give away the fact that tears were trembling in her throat. She didn’t meet her husband’s eye, instead mindlessly focusing on running her finger over the phone’s exterior, over and over again.
Then the first tear fell on the smooth black surface, and she placed the phone gently back on the counter. No need for her phone to drown in the deluge that was coming.
“Shaina?” Nachman asked gently. She still didn’t respond, but the tears continued coming.
Nachman curled his tongue inside his mouth and didn’t say anything else. He leaned awkwardly on the study door’s knob, unsure what he was supposed to do next.
“I thought I was doing the right thing. This is such a huge flop. Do you chap how embarrassing this is for me?”
If not for the wetness in her voice, she could have been a plaintive two-year-old.
“You realize that I have to explain to Mr. Seidman now why I’m leaving my job without even telling him about it first? What kind of irresponsible person takes a new job without letting her boss know that she’s leaving? What was I even thinking?”
She looked up, her eyes swimming. “You’re probably holding back your giggles, aren’t you? Because Mr. Seidman calling me right now is just so funny.”
“Of course not,” Nachman responded, sharply. “Come, sit down on the couch,” he ordered,
standing over the cushioned seats. She sat.
Nachman, seeing an empty mug in the sink, didn’t bother bringing her a tea. Instead, he brought her the Contigo water bottle from the fridge.
“Drink,” he said. She drank. Then he sat down, and, expression serious, said, “Tell me exactly what just happened.”
Mrs. Gordon did, while he listened intently, forehead furrowed like he was still sitting over his Gemara.
“So now I have a meeting scheduled with him tomorrow. I’m going to have to go to his office like a punished sixth grader and explain what exactly I was thinking. And why I want to leave this absolutely amazing position that I am lucky enough to have.”
Shaina Gordon wasn’t usually sarcastic, but it was better than sobbing her heart out.
“What do I do now?” she asked, the question practical and focused.
“Maybe I was wrong,” Nachman finally broke his silence to say. “Maybe I was wrong from the beginning.”
“Sounds like a good idea, are you taking the blame here?” Shaina quipped. “After making sure to stay out of it so it wouldn’t be your fault?”
“I don’t think it’s a question of fault here,” Nachman said, though he was relieved that his wife, who was always so in control, seemed to have gotten the tears out of her system.
“Maybe we should have asked a shaila here from the beginning.”
Yes, he had mentioned asking daas Torah, Shaina faintly remembered. But she had felt so finished, so sure that this job was simply not for her anymore, that she didn’t feel ready to hear a psak that would tell her to stay at her job.
Now, though, things had gotten so complicated and tangled up that she could sure use a guiding light to clear things up for her.
“So should we do it now?” she asked eagerly.
Nachman held up a hand. “I didn’t
say that just yet. I’m not sure anyone is going to want to be the scapegoat for this sticky situation, you know. But I still think we should at least discuss this with an adam gadol, even if this is not the kind of thing that someone can pasken either way.”
“Of course,” Mrs. Gordon said, relieved just at the thought that she could discuss the whole mess with someone who had bigger shoulders than she did. “But it’s pretty late. Is there anyone we can call at this hour?”
Nachman checked the time.
“Well, actually, it should be getting morning in Eretz Yisrael now. I can call Rav Berger. He’s always up early, and he might even be finished Shacharis already.”
Rav Berger was exactly the kind of person that this situation called for, Shaina thought to herself. Nachman had become close to him as a bachur learning in Eretz Yisrael, and they had called him a couple of times over the years to ask for guidance. In fact, she remembered asking him about her role in a specific situation regarding a student a few years back. Rav Berger had shown her then that he really understood what it meant to be a principal.
“Yes, let’s call him,” she said. “I hope he answers the phone.”
“No guarantees of that, but we can try,” Nachman said.
Casey was finally asleep.
But Shmiel was still up, breathing in the dankness of the cell as he tried to clear his mind and bid sleep to come, take him away… Frustratingly, sleep was elusive.
It made rage boil inside him, that even sleep wouldn’t listen to his command. He was completely and absolutely powerless, even over his own body.
Casey let out a snore that irritated Shmiel even more.
They should have at least given out earplugs in this 5-star hotel, he thought bitterly to himself.
That brought to mind the actual 5-star hotels he’d stayed in. His wife always had a reason why they
needed to go on vacation, so while he personally hadn’t enjoyed traveling all that much, he’d done it to indulge her. There were people who hadn’t liked it that he was constantly going on extravagant vacations. People who felt that they were just being show-offs. Someone in shul, Mr. Katzman, had once told him something like that. But he knew that people like that were just jealous. They didn’t deserve a moment of his time.
And he hadn’t given that Katzman a moment’s glance, just superciliously walked right past him.
What was Katzman thinking about Kleinberg now?
Oh, Kleinberg went to jail? I’m not surprised, that guy needed someone to put him in his place. He thought he was better than everyone else…
Shmiel imagined the scornful train of thought that was surely going through Katzman’s mind. If that was what Katzman was thinking now, could he, Shmiel, blame him?
He had thought he was richer, smarter, and better than the pack. Because his success had turned his head. Stuck in this dirty cell, with a drug lord for company, those thoughts seemed laughable.
Better than everyone else, huh? A scornful voice in his own head taunted him. Let’s see what you can do now, be a better inmate than anyone else?
Grrr! He wished he could just fall asleep. All the pounding voices in his head had to stop.
But they wouldn’t let up.
You thought you controlled everything, didn’t you? You had everyone wrapped around your little thumb. Now, no one’s giving two hoots about the fact that you’re gone.
He couldn’t know what was going on in the world outside jail, but he did have a strong feeling that his arrest hadn’t caused much sorrow outside of his close family circle.
Without money or prestige, what was Shmiel Kleinberg worth?
Powerless, helpless, defenseless. What had he done to deserve this, really? He had always done everything he was supposed to. He davened, learned, gave tzedakah… Okay, so maybe he wasn’t the biggest philanthropist in the world, but that was just to protect himself from all the bloodsucker collectors that would otherwise hound him.
Like that Bnos Golda administrator who thought that Shmiel Kleinberg should be the personal sponsor of the school. He’d had to put that school in its place, or they would have been treating him like their personal bank.
Even his personal Finance2 decisionmaker had said that his charitable spending was above-average…
That thought twisted Shmiel’s lips into a sardonic grimace. Did he still believe in that Finance2 software, after being arrested thanks to his allegiance to it?
What were all those fabulous deals worth to him in this incarceration? His family was living on charity now, all his money tied up in legal tangles.
Nothing, that was what it was worth. Nothing, that was what he felt worth.
Before implementing any plan, the first hurdle Josh Lugoff had to deal with, of course, was the fact that he was currently a hunted man.
An official arrest warrant had been issued for him, although they obviously couldn’t arrest him if they didn’t know where he was. If anyone identified him
as Josh Lugoff, though, then he was as good as jailed.
Which meant it was time for a new identity for Josh Lugoff.
He had a couple of those lined up and ready to slip into. All he had to do was make sure that the actual owner of the identity was gone in one way or another, and he would seamlessly become that person instead.
Choosing his new identity meant making sure that he would be able to achieve his goals best in that role.
Of course, he gravitated to rejoining the tech elite once again and becoming the owner of a fast-growing digital company. But that was risky, because he had too many contacts in the tech world to trust that none of them would expose him.
No, as he’d resolved before, he would have to go the political route this time. Mentally, he flipped through the political world identities he could possibly adopt.
Really, he didn’t need anyone with that much power. Being a lower-level staff member was okay, as long as he had access to enough info that could be used as a manipulating tool.
As soon as he had access to the right information, he could choose to change things at will, create shutdowns and malfunctions, and show those who thought they were in power that they were helpless against him. Then all he had to do was continue playing them as puppets, using his cash to convince people when it was necessary, to do his bidding.
The world didn’t realize what someone with enough digital knowledge could do.
But Josh knew his power.

CHAPTER THIRTY
Suesse Paprika estklassig
Max Hanter Geselschaft
Gueltigheitsdatum auf der Dose
(Translation from German: High-quality sweet paprika, Max Hanter spices, last date for use stamped on the cover)
T“It’s a new package,” their father said as he took the package of spices out of his van. He pointed to the shiny orange-green label. “Check it well.”
“Definitely recommended,” Bernard added, as his sisters loaded bags with products on a wheelbarrow.
“Stop giving out orders as if you were a real officer in the Wehrmacht,” his sister Helena snapped. “As it is, I’m going out of my mind at this point. We’ve got tons of pairs of hands working for us on the other side of the house, but we still have to schlep this monthly shopping order as if we were slaves. At least they bring the firewood, and Father agrees that they can come in to clean too.”
They were standing at the front part of the estate when Bernard stuck a hand in his pocket. “Oops,” he said as he pulled out a pistol.
His father glowered. “That thing is not supposed to be seen here at all,” he said harshly, fixing his gaze on the front gate leading to the deserted road. “Samson Lager only exists for our workers. To the public, we are all innocent Austrian citizens. Imagine if a guest would suddenly arrive and see that thing in your hands.”
“Come on, what would happen?”
“You don’t have a license to carry a weapon—not the rusty ones from World War II and certainly not that new one. Remember, when you go upstairs to change into civilian clothes, your personal weapon goes into the closet and not back into your pocket. And you will recall that this is not the first time I have warned you about this.”
“Don’t worry, he wouldn’t take it to the university with him, Father,” Helena said scornfully. “Just the feeling of the pistol makes him feel powerful, that’s all. He enjoys every minute of this game.”
“In my eyes, it’s not just a game.” Bernard looked at the gun in his hand, running a finger over the gleaming barrel. “Our family has been running this camp for Jews for fifty years, and you think it’s only for financial gain. But for me? For me it is the truth. And
1 MORE WEEK!
it doesn’t matter that the whole world lives in a different reality. It will yet happen.” His eyes glittered. “And a secret appendix to the thesis that I am writing will get the highest grade possible.”
“Alright, alright, Bernard,” his father said impatiently. “When you start with your delusional pontifications, you don’t usually remember to finish.”
“Here, I’m finishing. I just wanted to say that in any case, whether or not the Reich will be reestablished, no one should make light of my contribution to this place. The newspapers and the articles, the memorial event for the Cosmos Fuhrer… I’ve definitely contributed lots of color and persuasive staging for this whole business. Who knows if I’m not the only reason it is still functioning! And,” he turned to his sisters, “despite all your complaints, you don’t look to me like you’re suffering all that badly.” He sniffed the air and burst out laughing. “All those aromas of chocolate and poppy and hot blueberry jam that are waiting for you tonight are thanks to me,” he said to Helena. “Hey, I wonder if you’ll get birthday presents from the Jews tonight!”
He pushed the wheelbarrow full of products along the path that led to the house. When he came to the vestibule, he turned the wheelbarrow’s contents onto the floor. “I have no patience for this boring work,” he grumbled. “Go on, Teresa and Helena, check every item.”
“Especially new and unfamiliar packages,” their father said, bringing up the rear. “Be careful about any kosher symbols or any other Jewish symbol or Hebrew letters. No one wants one minute of inattention to elicit questions from our excellent workers.”
“We can always provide answers,” Bernard said as he tossed the gun from one hand to the other.
“But it’s better not to start with the needless answers, when everything is running so smoothly. Preventing the problems in the first place is much better than dealing with them later.” He leveled his gaze at his son. “And that thing—up to your room, now.”
“And now—” Teresa munched on her chocolate while examining the large, clear canister, turning it slowly so she could see all sides of it. “Nope. It doesn’t say anything to that effect now either.”
“You checked carefully?”
“Yes.”
Someone once said that their paprika is imported from Israel, but it doesn’t say so on the package.
“Sure, Father,” Bernard said, saluting sharply before he turned to go.
“What did Father say there’s a new package for?” Teresa asked as she sat down on the carved wooden bench in the vestibule and began to study the mountain of products on the floor.
“The spices from the Hanter factory,” her sister said, folding the packaging from a bar of dark chocolate.
“Oh, yes.”
“Someone once said that their paprika is imported from Israel, but it doesn’t say so on the package. We’ve already checked a few dozen times.”

Vienna
Charna had a friendly smile and tone, and it was obvious that Dena’s mother-in-law liked her a lot. “Oh, this is so nice!” she exclaimed when both Dena and Charna were sitting in the kitchen at the glass table, which was piled high with refreshments of the type only Mrs. Hanter knew how to serve. “I’m so glad we’re meeting now, in the morning, without the children disrupting. Not that I have anything against my adorable grandchildren, Charna, or against your kids, who your mother tells me so much about…”
“Obviously.” Charna grinned as she leaned back in her chair. “But yes, I agree that it’s better they’re not here now. Sometimes we need to be without them, to have some peace and quiet, so we’re able to talk.”
Dena didn’t like that statement. Not that she never waited for the minute her children would go to sleep so she could have some quiet, but it grated on her ears to hear someone say it so explicitly. She missed her sisters so much right this minute, that Charna’s warm gaze just irritated her.
“I’ll go prepare you some tea,” the older woman said, and she disappeared.
“It’s here!” Dena called after her.
“What’s here?” She took a step back.
“There’s tea here already.”
“No, I meant Chinese tea,” her mother-in-law said, and continued out of the room. Dena got the distinct feeling that this was all staged.
“So, what’s doing, Dena?” Charna asked. “How is Vienna treating you? Are you getting settled?”
“So-so.”
“Why only so-so?”
“I don’t know…” Dena looked for the right words. “Everything is so different from what I’m used to.”
“So it’s just a matter of getting used to it,” Charna said understandingly.
“Well, yes, but it’s not only that.” She wasn’t so fluent in Yiddish, and she felt that the effort it took to find the right words was making her sound even more halting.
“What else is it?” Charna asked. She picked up a delicate porcelain plate and a silver fork with two tines and helped herself
to a slice of Viennese torte with chocolate ganache and real cherries on top. “It’s hard for me to define it. I was used to more…”
“More what?”
It would sound foolish to say “I don’t know,” for the second time in a minute and a half, right? “Maybe more Yiddishkeit… No, no,” she said hastily when she saw the other woman’s eyebrows crease in puzzlement. “Everything here is very heimish, and the people are very much like us. But I’m used to women living different kinds of lives, simpler lives, where the main thing is not only…” The memory of her first trip with her mother-in-law into town rose in her mind. “Not only clothes and furs from the most expensive factory in Europe—what’s their name? Wanges? No, something similar.” She suddenly noticed that the fur cape hanging on the hook near the door of the room bore the elliptical gold tag.
“Our life here is not only about clothes and furs,” Charna said, her eyes no longer smiling. “And excuse me, but it’s very arrogant to judge people based on those things. We have plenty of ruchniyus, too: shiurim, parshah classes, chizuk gatherings, and all kinds of other ruchniyus–oriented events that some people think are below them to attend.”
Dena got the sharp jibe. “It’s not that I think it’s below me,” Dena protested. “It’s just that it’s hard for me to get used to a new place and a new social scene. And when I spoke about furs, I didn’t mean specifically your cape…”
“So because you don’t want to make the effort to get used to it here, and to get to know us, you’ve decided that you’re better than us and you label us.” Charna tasted the cake. “That’s not very nice at all. It’s ga’avah.” She continued eating delicately.
Dena wanted to kick herself. She helped herself to a slice of cake, if only to buy some time as she tried to think quickly of what else she could say. Because as uncomfortable as it was for her to admit it, Charna was right.
Her mother-in-law walked back in and looked at the two younger women eating quietly. “I hope you two are finding a common language,” she said, looking alternately from one to the other, as if wondering whether to join them or not.
“Dena’s Yiddish is actually fine,” Charna said graciously. “And your cake is delicious.” “Thank you. Your mother makes it like this, too, right?” “Exactly.”
So, only her Israeli mother didn’t know how to make divine Viennese tortes, and only she, the Israeli daughter-in-law, didn’t know how to make social connections. And she had destroyed the first attempt at friendship with her foolishness. What could she say? If Ima would have heard her now, she really would have been ashamed of her. Ugh.
How much longer would it take for her mother-in-law to figure out that something had gone badly between her and Charna? And that for the most part, her daughter-in-law was to blame for it?
Dena forced herself to try to patch things up. “It really is a masterpiece of a cake. I would love to be able to bake on such a level.”
“In order to get to this level, you have to start from the bottom,” Bentzy’s mother said. “Charna herself is a gourmet cook, and I’m sure that being friends with her will help you with that.” She smiled broadly. “What do you say, Charna? You’ll agree to give Dena some good tips and recipes, won’t you?”
“Sure, of course,” Charna said, flashing a quick smile at Dena. To Dena’s surprise, it was not a triumphant smile, but a rather friendly one. “If she agrees to start from the beginning.”

MORE ON MUSHROOMS
Summer is the perfect season to explore the earthy, savory flavors of mushrooms. From meat to dairy, mushrooms’ unique versatility allows them to shine in both simple and complex recipes, making them a must-have ingredient for any summer spread.
RECIPES, STYLING & PHOTOGRAPHY SARAH D. / STMTSTUDIO.COM
SPICY GRILLED GARLIC MUSHROOM SKEWERS
These skewers are juicy little flavor bombs. Serve them up at your next grill for a fun, instant family favorite. Control the spice factor by decreasing or adding more of the chopped Calibrian peppers.
Ingredients:
16 oz. (2 boxes) fresh white or baby bella mushrooms, sliced in halves
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 tablespoon soy sauce
½ tablespoon maple syrup
½ tablespoon sesame oil
3 cloves crushed garlic
1 tablespoon Tuscanini chopped Calibrian peppers
1 tablespoon fresh chopped or dried parsley
¼ teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon black pepper
Directions:
1. In a large bowl, whisk all the ingredients except the mushrooms. Add the mushrooms and marinate for about 30 minutes to 1 hour.
2. Meanwhile, soak about 10 wooden skewers in water to prevent burning.
3. Once marinated, gently skewer the mushrooms (it’s easier when you twist instead of just pick through the mushroom).
4. Grill on high until just tender and slightly charred, about 1-2 minutes per side.
5. Transfer the grilled mushroom skewers to a serving platter. Sprinkle with herbs and serve warm. Enjoy!

MAGIC MUSHROOM WINE SAUCE PASTA
We call this sauce ‘magic’, because you can use it for virtually any pasta-style dish. Think: gnocchi, ravioli, stuffed shells, or whatever shape of pasta you like. Simply follow the instructions and toss with your choice of ‘pasta’ at the end.
Ingredients
1 bag pasta, cooked according to package instructions (we used angel hair)
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 onion, thinly sliced
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon sugar
¼ teaspoon black pepper
1 clove garlic, minced
8 oz. fresh mushrooms, thinly sliced
2 tablespoon butter (for roux)
2 tablespoon flour (for roux)
½ cup White or Marsala wine
1 cup water
1/2 cup milk
½ cup shredded mozzarella cheese
1 tablespoon grated Parmesan cheese
Instructions
1. Onion & Mushrooms: Heat the olive oil in a frying pan. Add the sliced onions, salt, sugar, and black pepper and saute over medium heat for 5-7 minutes. Add the garlic and mushrooms. Cook over medium heat until mushrooms are golden.
2. Remove the mushroom mixture from pan and set aside.
3. Roux: In the same pan, melt the butter over medium heat. Once melted, add the flour and stir constantly to form a roux. Cook the roux for 1-2 minutes until it turns a light golden color.
4. Add the wine and let it cook for about 1-2 minutes until bubbling.
5. Gradually whisk in the water, milk, mozzarella cheese, and grated parmesan cheese. Cook for about 3-4 minutes until creamy.
6. Add the cooked mushrooms and onions back into the pan and stir well.
7. Add your cooked pasta (or cooked gnocchi/ravioli) and cook for an additional minute on low heat so all flavors can meld together.
8. Serve hot with fresh herbs and additional grated Parmesan cheese
CHEESY STUFFED PORTOBELLOS
Loaded with flavor and oozing with cheese, these mushrooms are a true labor of love (thanks to the mushroom cleaning + prep) but are worth every bite. Make them at your next special brunch or dinner.
Ingredients:
6 large Portobello mushroom caps
2 tablespoons butter
Cooking oil spray
1⁄2 teaspoon salt and pepper
1 small onion, finely chopped
½ teaspoon salt
3 cloves garlic, minced
12 oz. frozen spinach, drained under hot water
4 tablespoons cream cheese
¼ teaspoon basil
¼ teaspoon oregano
¼ cup breadcrumbs
Tip: For added spice, add a tablespoon of Tuscanini chopped Calibrian peppers to the filling mixture.
1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese, plus more for topping
1 tablespoon grated Parmesan cheese
1⁄2 cup Tuscanini chopped/crushed Tomatoes (or tomato sauce), plus more for topping
Instructions
1. Preheat the oven to 400° and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
2. Mushrooms: Clean the Portobello mushrooms with a damp paper towel. Carefully remove the stems and finely chop them for the filling (set aside).
3. With a spoon, gently scrape out and discard the gills (brown inner part of mushrooms).
4. Brush the mushrooms with 1 tablespoon of olive oil and season with salt and pepper.
5. Place them gill side down on the baking sheet and roast for 10 minutes. Flip the mushrooms over and roast for 5 more minutes. Then, take them out of the oven and set aside.
6. Filling: In a skillet over medium heat, warm the olive oil. Add the diced onions and saute until translucent. Add the chopped mushroom stems, garlic and drained spinach and cook for 3-4 minutes. Remove from the heat and let cool slightly.
7. In a separate large bowl, add the cream cheese, basil, oregano, breadcrumbs, ½ cup mozzarella cheese, parmesan cheese, and crushed tomatoes. Stir with a fork or gloved hands until well combined.
8. Divide the filling between the mushroom caps. Top with a tablespoon of crushed tomatoes. Sprinkle with mozzarella cheese.
9. Bake for 10-15 minutes until the tops are golden and the cheese is bubbly.
10. Serve hot and enjoy!

THE FOLLOWING FISH
(FRESH/FROZEN/SMOKED/CANNED)
ARE OF CONCERN:

Cod1
Flounder- All other types
(Including: Dabs, Turbot, Yellow Fin Sole, Yellow Tail)

Mackerel4
Ocean Perch (Icelandic)
Pollock5
Red Perch (Icelandic)
Red Snapper (Pacific)
Sable (is often made from Sea Bass – see Sea Bass)
1 Canned cod liver [not to be confused with cod liver oil] has also been found to be infested.
2 The Badatz of the Eidah Hachareidis in Yerushalayim reports that Hake fillet from South Africa have been found to be clean.
3 The Badatz of the Eidah Hachareidis in Yerushalayim reports that Halibut that comes from Norway & Iceland has anisakis only in the upper part of the fish; the lower part may be used. Alaskan Halibut may be infested in other areas as well.
4 Mackerel from Morocco has been found to be clean.
5 Most fish sticks are made with pollock. Some are made from whole fillet, and some are made from minced fish. There are different methods of making minced fish, and not all methods grind it finely enough to eliminate the concern. [However, some fish sticks are made from fish that are free of concern (Nile Perch, Tilapia)].
6 Most fresh salmon sold in fish stores is farm raised. Generally, wild salmon is significantly more expensive. However, the whole salmon fish sold in big chain stores such as Costco, Walmart etc. are often wild caught, and have an anisakis concern. Salmon from New Zealand, often sold locally as wild salmon, is actually farm raised and is not a concern. Canned salmon is usually wild caught.
7 Recent research has shown that when Chilean sea bass is infested, worms can be found in all parts of the fish.
Note: Some companies may mark their fish products 'םיעלות
. It is important to verify with the individual certifying agency or Rov if this includes anisakis worms. [Products that bear the certification of the Badatz Eidah Hachareidis – Yerushalayim may be used, as Badatz policy does not allow fish that have an anisakis concern].
We would like to thank the various kashrus agencies whose information and experience were helpful in the preparation of this list: Vaad Hakashrus of Badatz Eidah Hachareidis – Yerushalayim, Chevra Mevakshei Hakashrus – Monsey, New Square Kashrus Council (NSK), Kashrus Council of Lakewood (KCL), Vaad Hakashrus of Five Towns, Star-K, Rabbinical Council of California (RCC), Vaad Harabanim of Flatbush.
This list is publicized as a public service by:

STREET SMARTS: A DIFFERENT TYPE OF SOCIAL SKILL
Often, I write columns discussing academics, or book smarts, but today in light of recent events in our community, I thought I would talk about teaching our children how to be street smart. Even though we generally live in safe areas with wholesome people, unfortunately, there are people with ulterior motives who share our neighborhood.
What are street smarts?
People who are street smart have common sense and an awareness of what is going on in the world around them. Street smarts consist of practical knowledge, rather than hypothetical knowledge. Often, street smarts refer to the ability to handle modern, urban life.
Children and Street Smarts
Street smarts go hand-in-hand with social skills and are just as essential for living a full and productive life. In reality, we are not born with street smarts or social skills. Some children pick up on social cues from birth, while others are need to be taught these skills explicitly. How can we educate our children in order to keep them safe on the streets? Below, I have included some tips for parents and educators to help instill these integral skills:
• Pick out “safe spots.” If your child is old enough to walk on the street alone, pick out different spots on his route that are designated as “safe.” Some safe spots might be:
grandparents’ house, the library, police stations, the firehouse, familiar stores and restaurants, or friends’ houses. Teach your child to use those safe spots if he feels that he is in danger.
• Travel in groups. When your child begins to travel on the street alone, the best way to start slow is to ensure that he is walking or biking with friends. Predators are less likely to prey on groups of children, whereas a child walking alone is an easier target.
• No short cuts. If your child is used to his route to and from school, tell him he is not allowed to take any shortcuts through parking lots or alleyways. He should stay on heavily populated streets that are familiar and well lit. Talk about the areas of your neighborhood that are safer than others and do test-runs with him to ensure that he learns the route.
• Check in. The adult who takes care of the child needs to know where he is at all times. To that end, children should tell their parents exactly where they are going and at exactly what time they will get there and return. This way, children learn to be aware and responsible for their comings and goings.
• Avoid speaking to strangers. In some extenuating circumstances, speaking to strangers is necessary, so teach your child how to choose which “safer” stranger. Explain that
he should go into a store, stop a woman with children, or find a police officer if he must speak to a stranger. Understanding that there are safe and unsafe adults will not only make life less scary, but will also give him the tools to select wisely if he must ask a question of a stranger.
• Never get in a car with a stranger. While it is sometimes necessary to speak to a stranger, it is never okay for your child to get in a car with someone he doesn’t know. But, that’s not all. If a stranger asks a child to look in his car, put his arm in the window to take something, or come closer to see something being offered, teach your child to run in the other direction towards the nearest safe spot. Tell your child that even if the stranger knows his name, he should still get away as quickly as possible. In the worstcase scenario, your child will end up seeming rude, but he will ultimately be safe.
Adults and Street Smarts
Of course, our utmost concern is for our child’s safety, but there are many other reasons why being socially intelligent can be beneficial. After all, the distinction between books smarts (intelligence) and street smarts (wisdom) grows wider every day. If you are intelligent, you know a lot of facts because you have read them in books or studied them in courses. On the other hand,
if you are street smart, you have taken your experiences and applied them to others areas of your life. While you lack factual knowledge, you have a plethora of practical knowledge.
Recently, I had a woman come to my office with a fantastic academic resume. She had several advanced degrees from wonderful institutions, but she could not find a job. She thought that perhaps she needed coaching for interviews. After going through her resume, she and I discovered that she had no indication of her work experience. In these harder economic times, employers are not simply looking for education; they are also looking for hands-on experience. Once we placed a greater emphasis on her previous jobs, companies finally started returning her calls.
Social Skills and Street Smarts
Throughout my career, I have been working with children and adults to help them gain social skills to better interact with those around them. We work on introducing ourselves, making eye contact, and listening skills. For adults, social skills and street smarts often go hand-in-hand. The way to make a great first impression is through exemplary social skills and the knowledge of how to act in different social situations.
For children, street smarts often entail “negative” social skills. Instead of politely answering questions, we tell our children to walk away. Instead of quietly saying “no,” we tell our children to scream and yell. Regardless, street smarts are another skill that we must teach our children, even if they aren’t skills we value in our ordinary lives. Our reality demands that every child not only knows how to say “yes, please” and “thank you,” but also knows how to scream “NO” at the top of their lungs.

Slip the template into the sheet protector to use as a guide.
Look at your key and take out all the colors you’ll need. fill in the rest of your map. Each Shevet’s land can be filled in with the corresponding color.
With an Exacto knife, trim the sides leaving a small border, then create a hole with a paper clip for the keychain.
Take out your blue Fimo and carefully line the water, don’t worry about it being perfect. Make small dots for the seas and a thin line for the rest.
Once the map is complete take a color of Fimo not used, roll out a thick layer and stick onto the entire area.
Bake in the oven at 230° for around 35-45 minutes and then let cool. Attach to Keychain and enjoy!
With the black Fimo carefully line the map borders of where Eretz Yisrael is today, any areas with a black dot can be filled as well.
Carefully pick up the map & turn it over.

PARSHAS MATOS MAASAEI
Moshe listed every location where the Jews camped in the desert to emphasize the significance of each one. Regardless of the duration, each stop symbolized a step away from Egypt and towards Eretz Yisrael.
IMAGINE DID YOU KNOW? BRING IT HOME
You are on a cross-country road trip with your family. After driving for close to 5 hours, your baby sister starts to fuss and cry. It’s time to stop so your mother can feed her, and for you and your other siblings to stretch and move around a bit. After continuing on the road, the gas gauge lights up, signaling the time to stop and fill up on gas. Throughout the journey, your family stops a few more times. However, it’s important to remember that every stop is crucial. Each stop is a dot on the map closer to the right direction ultimately bringing you closer to your destination.
DELVING DEEPER
Moshe could have summarized the Jews’ 42 journeys in one sentence, saying, “We stopped at 42 places.” Instead, he painstakingly shared every place they stopped in. “They traveled from Raamses and camped in Sukkos. Then traveled from Sukkos and camped in Eisam.” By doing this, he conveyed to the Jews that every stop was important. Each place they stopped in was a step farther from the confines of Egypt and that much closer to Eretz Yisrael. This message serves as encouragement to us. We may feel incapable of completely overcoming our inner struggles and doing the right thing all the time. Moshe Rabeinu comes to tell us: “That’s ok. One small step in the right direction makes all the difference.” Every right choice you make, no matter how small, has a positive impact, bringing us closer to our destination, Moshiach.
What small, positive action can you add today, in addition to what you did yesterday?

6. Sprinkle with salt, garlic powder and paprika.
7. Bake in the preheated oven for about 40 minutes, or until the potatoes are crispy and golden brown and the cheese is melted and crisped up.

UPON THE ALTAR OF KIDDUSH HASHEM. A fascinating and inspiring work, this book is a must-read for every thinking Jew. BY RAV ZALMAN

NEW!
WITHIN HOLINESS in the HOLOCAUST
In Holiness in the Holocaust, noted talmid chacham Rabbi Zalman Hillel Fendel z”l sheds light on the fundamental concept of what constitutes a death al kiddush Hashem—analyzing it and showing us the Torah wisdom of our revered gedolim, both of past generations and contemporary, on this elusive topic. Read awe-inspiring accounts of the final days and destruction of Litvishe and Chassidic towns across Europe, as so many Torah leaders and their communities prepared for their very final mitzvah. Understand the compelling connection between the Holocaust and the gezeirah of Purim; the striking similarities of the edict of Haman and Achashveirosh, and the Final Solution with the silence of the Western world; the significance of the word “Yehudi ” and its bearing on why all six million Jews who were killed during the Holocaust are considered harugei malchus

QI am 32 years old and have been on and off the dieting bandwagon since I was 11. My weight is at a precarious point now and I must lose weight for health purposes, quickly. My question is, in your opinion, what can help me be successful this time and help me keep my weight off as opposed to regaining it
as soon as I am off
my diet?
AUnfortunately, a case like yours is posed to me at least twice a week. No one suddenly finds themselves at a precarious and unhealthy weight from one day to the next, rather, it is a buildup of years and years. I am fortunate to be in the position that I am in, and I am passionate about helping women achieve their health and fitness goals. Personally, I do believe that what makes me passionate and BH successful at my work, is that I very much believe in the educational component of the line of work that I am in, as opposed to making people live their lives off of lists and calorie amounts to help them reach their goals. What I mean to say is, that your weight loss goal will have to resonate with you deeply, and mean more to you than your doctor’s orders about weight loss.
Back in the day, when you were in school, I am sure that your teacher would make you memorize dates and quotes for tests. The only way that you were able to successfully memorize the dates, is if you made yourself some mnemonic devices and hints, and once the information made sense to you, and resonated with you, were able to remember the dates. Same here. Going to a nutritionist that will not explain your physical anatomy to you, and won’t give you an understanding of how your body and mind work, rather, she will only give you lists to work off of, then that diet most likely won’t last. You need to understand the work that you are doing so that it resonates with you and speaks to you, and actually lasts. You need to understand the concept of cause and effect. You need to understand what actually fuels you and what pulls you down. You need to understand why it is important to
eat on time, and why skipping meals will not work for you.
Also, most importantly, you need to learn how to ditch the “D” word, and refrain from “going on a diet”. Why is that so? Because when you “go on a diet”, you can also “go off the diet”! And when one goes off a diet, what happens? Weight gain happens. So, I would advise you to shift gears and aim to “learn a new lifestyle” as opposed to the diet word, and yes, sometimes you will veer off the lifestyle, but you won’t be going off any diet.
What is a lifestyle? A lifestyle is a way of life that is sustainable, maintainable, and that makes sense to you, and resonates with you. Three meals a day. Two snacks. Eight cups of water. That is a sustainable lifestyle. That being said, before you hire your next nutritionist or coach, see if their methodology speaks to you. Is it doable as a lifestyle, or just doable as a diet? If it is not doable as a way of life, then chances are, once you lose your weight and you are no longer driven to follow, the weight will creep up on you again.
Also, remember that the maintenance aspect is a very important component. It is very important to remember that maintenance does not mean weight gain, rather weight management. When hiring a coach or nutritionist to work with, make sure that they have a solid and decent maintenance lifestyle so that you can actually keep the weight off and feel lighter and happier. I hope that these pointers will steer you in the right direction and that this time you will succeed for years to come, respectfully!
“Do not separate yourself from the community. Do not trust in yourself until the day you die. Do not judge your fellow until you have reached his place. Do not say something that cannot be understood, for it will ultimately be understood. Do not say, ‘When I am free, I will study,’ for perhaps you will never become free.”
It was that kind of winter. My daughter broke out in pimples that turned out to be the Coxsackie virus, my son had RSV, then all of them took turns with Strep and my baby came down with a double ear infection.
Between all of them, I frequented the pediatrician’s office more often than I did my office. My boss was kind and understanding, but even she had her limits – when I took off for the third time in as many weeks, for example.
To add to all of that, my husband changed jobs just then and had to put in many extra hours for training in the beginning. He woke up at 6:00 and was gone until 6:00 or 7:00 in the afternoon, leaving me to send off my kids
and do supper-bath-bedtime single-handedly.
Between his crazy schedule, my demanding job, and my kids’ endless game of ‘Pass the germ ‘round and ‘round’, I was spent.
Frankly, I needed a vacation.
One night my husband wearily walked in at 6:30, as I was attempting to give my wheezing toddler the nebulizer, two kids ran around with wet hair and no pajamas, and plates with congealing supper dotted the table, he got that sparkle in his eyes.
He didn’t say anything, just helped me bathe the two little ones, got the older ones into pajamas, and helped Chaim brush his teeth.
Only after all the kids were settled and the chaos had calmed, when we finally sat over bowls of meatballs and spaghetti, did he share his idea.
“That’s it, Ruchy. You need a vacation. You know my mother bought this house in North Miami? I’ll call my mother and ask her if we can use her house this weekend.”
My eyes brightened, and my weary back automatically straightened. “Do you really mean it?” I asked hopefully. “That sounds like exactly what I need right now.”
He laughed. “You just figure out where to place the kids and cook the food. Leave the rest to me.”

“But what about work?” I suddenly remembered.
“I think it’s the perfect time. Don’t you always say that December is pretty calm, the busy season starts January? Also, my boss is going away next week so I think he’ll be understanding if I take off now. It shouldn’t be much, just one Thursday, maybe Monday too.”
I sighed and leaned back on my chair. “It sounds like a dream,” I said longingly, thinking of long days on the porch, looking up at the cloudless blue sky and drinking in the peace.
My husband put in a quick call to his mother. I listened with half an ear as I rinsed the dishes.
“Hello, Baruch Hashem, how’s everything by you? Simi’s feeling better. What? Moishy had a trip?”
The conversation meandered pleasantly as I finished scrubbing and turned to the toys on the floor.
“So we could really use a break this week, and it works out so well with Ruchy’s work schedule. Is your house available this week?”
He gave me a thumb-up as I spoke, and I smiled widely.
“We’re on,” he announced as he hung up. “She said it should work out, she’s happy to help us out this way, and we really do deserve that break,” he said with shining eyes.
I laughed giddily, more excited and energized than I’d felt in a while.
The following day, Tuesday, my husband checked out airlines and called me excitedly that he found tickets leaving Thursday morning for a great price.
“That’s amazing,” I exulted. “And my boss gave me permission to take off Thursday. Things are really falling into place!”
I continued working half-heartedly, trying to get as much work in before I left, while simultaneously making mental calculations in my head. Perhaps my mother could take Shia and Simi, and my sister Chany could take Suri, and Chaim could go to his classmate Shonfeld who lived next
door? I was friends with his mother, she would probably agree.
It sounded tantalizing. I hadn’t gone on vacation in too long to remember. Just the thought of it gave me a heady sense of exhilaration.
I got home that day with an extra burst of energy and put up a nutritious supper that could easily be reheated, so we could enjoy it Thursday night after we landed.
I even managed to have all the kids ready for bed before my husband walked in. Over supper, we discussed our upcoming trip.
“I heard about this beautiful lake where you could take out boats for a great price,” my husband shared. I merely smiled, imagining the feeling of the sun on my face as we drifted languidly over placid blue waters.
“Oh, let me just call my mother to confirm before I call the travel agent,” my husband said.
“Oh, you were just about to call me?” I heard him murmur in surprise.
I waited for the conversation to continue, but it was silent for just a tad too long. I looked up sharply.
“Oh, I hear,” my husband said quietly, his tone lacking the carefree abandon from seconds earlier. “Chany Shneider. Uh-uh. Ok, I’ll tell Ruchy.”
He finished up and turned to face me. “You heard what she said? It’s not available this week. The Shneiders are going.”
Chany Shneider? My cousin?! Since when did cousins get priority over one’s children? We had called her first, couldn’t she tell her to come a different week? We really needed this vacation, and this week worked out so well on all fronts. It was calm at work, tickets were cheap, and my siblings were available to take my kids.
And besides, since when was my mother-in-law keen on giving it out to random people?
I swallowed hard. “Hmmm. That is… disappointing.” I tried to keep my voice in check, but the tears I was
holding back made my voice crack.
My husband looked just as upset and confused as I felt.
“I know, Ruchy, I feel so bad. You really deserve a vacation, and I don’t understand what happened here. She told me that it should be fine. I just don’t understand it,” he repeated, pacing the room cagily.
I nodded miserably, not trusting myself to speak.
My husband called back the travel agent that we wouldn’t need the tickets after all, while I was left to mope.
Every bone in my body ached with exhaustion, exacerbated by the thought of our vacation slipping further away.
I needed this vacation. We needed this vacation. Couldn’t my motherin-law see that?
And she had agreed! We had plans! What suddenly changed?
I was tempted to call her myself, feel her out, drop comments about the ready supper for Thursday, the day off my boss had agreed to, and scribbled babysitting arrangements. But I refrained.
I knew I was too angry, that I would say things I would regret.
I reminded myself, over and over, that my mother-in-law was a wise, compassionate person who knew what she was doing, and she must have had a very good reason for refusing us this week.
That thought didn’t give me the break I so desperately needed, but it worked to somewhat diffuse the frustration and anger I felt towards her.
We didn’t discuss it much, my husband and I. We were both confused, disappointed, and frankly, a little angry.
Talking about it would just lead to lashon hara and bad feelings.
My husband’s boss was going out of the country for a few days, so the next week wasn’t an option. But we tentatively discussed going at a later date.
We also tried to put all non-pressing matters aside and find time in our hectic lives to breathe a little, take a walk together, trying to recapture the feelings of serenity that the thoughts of a vacation had sprinkled into the humdrum of life.
The days passed. Some were easier, more manageable, and some more difficult.
Three weeks later, we found ourselves on a plane. It felt surreal. At last, our dreams for a vacation were coming true. We arrived at our destination just in time to drink in the rapturous splendor of sunset. The air was balmy and warm, with a hint of a sea breeze.
Just sitting there felt like a cup of ice-cold water on a hot day, like a salve on a burning wound. I inhaled deeply, letting the calm wash over me, fill my every pore.
After an hour of lounging around, we went inside. The house was grand and immaculate, with cozy corners to relax by the fireplace and delicate marble tabletops. The beds were freshly made, and the fridge was stocked with drinks. We felt like VIP’s.
My husband made a quick call to his mother to express his thanks.
I leaned back into the hammock chair on the porch and breathed in the sound of the crickets as he spoke.
“What? The Shneiders are coming again next week?” I heard him express in surprise. I leaned forward, crickets forgotten. My husband was quiet, his face paling with each passing moment. He put his hands in his pockets and started pacing the perimeters of the porch.
A funny feeling tingled up my spine and made me sit up very straight until my husband dialed end and walked over to where I sat.
“What did she say?” I asked, scared to hear the answer.
“The Shneiders. Their son Shloimy has a rare bone cancer, and there’s a specialist here that they have to see once a month…” His voice was so low, I had to strain to hear him.
“The first time they came, they hoped it would be the last, they didn’t want anyone to know. But now that they have to come so often they told my mother she could share. I can’t believe it. Poor them, dealing with so much…”
A thickness settled in my throat and stopped me from replying. Tears stung my eyelids as I contemplated what the Shneiders must be going through.
We sat for a while longer, contemplating the news in silence.
“So the Shneiders had to come specifically that week,” I said dully, as the pieces clicked.
My husband nodded. “If only we had known… we would have given it up willingly and happily,” he said mournfully.
“But that’s just it. Usually, we don’t know. Now. we were lucky to have everything revealed to us so clearly,” I said slowly.
“But usually, our vision stays shrouded in dark.”
I looked up at the black sky, at the tiny pinpricks of light shining through the darkness, illuminating small patches of light. Then I dialed my mother-in-law.
