The Torah world is under attack. We must step in.
In what was never imagined possible, the Israeli government abruptly cut the funding of over 1,500 yeshivos and kollelim, leaving a staggering deficit of $107,000,000 — threatening their survival. But we will not stand idly by.
The Gedolei Yisroel came to the United States, imploring us to raise the funds needed to preserve these institutions and save the Olam HaTorah.

Recap: In thinking whether to take her sister-inlaw’s job offer, Mrs. Gordon realizes that a lot of her reluctance to make a final decision is rooted in the fear of admitting that she isn’t Supermom who can swing it all. This realization leads to a resolve that she won’t let fear of failure hamper her ability to be the best mother she can be, and she decides that she’ll be taking the job.
Meanwhile, articles come out regarding updates at a company called Tee. The media claims that Tee must have gotten data from Finance2 to power their new updates.
Shachne comes over to tell Mrs. Kleinberg the wonderful news, and how it will help her husband in court.
CHAPTER 40
“Hi Devorah, how are you?” Shaina Gordon said, steeling herself for the conversation.
They chatted for a few minutes, circling around the topic at the front and center of their minds. Finally, Devorah bit the bullet.
“So what’s the good word, Shaina?” Devorah hinted. Mrs. Gordon’s words got stuck in her throat. Good word. Was this actually a good idea?
Last night, she’d thought so.
“Well, I guess it is good news for you, actually. I’ve decided that it makes sense to take the job.”
“And I hope that means you’re actually taking it?”
Devorah asked, a bemused undertone to her voice.
Mrs. Gordon chuckled. “Yup, I’m being a big girl and taking this job cuz it’s the right thing for my family.
I’m still planning to be miserable about leaving Bnos Golda, so there,” she said.
“Hey, you’re not gonna blame me for this one day, will you?”
“Sure I will, when I love the job so much that I don’t want to leave it either, I’ll thank you for getting me into it.”
Devorah laughed. “Is that really what it’s all about, that you don’t want to leave but you feel like it’s something you have to do?”
Mrs. Gordon sighed. “I am kind of forcing myself to say yes because I think it’s the right thing to do, even though I’ll miss being a principal. So now, will you go tell your boss he has a new employee for next year?”
“Yay! We’re going to be coworkers! I think you really will learn to love the job. We have such a great atmosphere in the office, and you’ll fit right in. Everyone is so friendly and nice here, we eat lunch together all the time and it’s a lot of fun.”
Well, that was another aspect of her new job she would have to get used to – not being the aloof boss

but rather being part of the staff, albeit with a senior position.
There would be a lot to get used to. For a lot of people.
Mrs. Gordon pushed away a mental picture of the disappointed look her daughter Chayala would give her when she would tell her the news, and quelled the feelings of inadequacy that bubbled up alongside the image.
She didn’t have to tell her daughter just yet, anyway.
“You realize that this is totally confidential, Devorah, right? Please make sure no one hears about this.”
“Why do you really care, Shaina? It’s not like it can cost you your job.”
“I just don’t want to deal with the reactions yet. First, let me get used to the idea myself. Then I’ll share it with other people.
“No problem,” Devorah said, hearing the plea in her sister-in-law’s words.
What Sam Kleinberg had discovered in the few days that he’d shared his cell with his new cellmate, was that Casey loved to talk.
Even if it sounded like an attack or like he was trying to goad an argument, his true intent was actually to simply start a conversation. Any time it was quiet in the cell for even a few moments, Casey was sure to break it with a belligerent comment or a snarky observation.
Mr. Kleinberg, who just wanted to retreat into his own thoughts and ruminate about his failed decisions, quickly learned that it wasn’t an option to just ignore Casey, or that would simply provoke louder and more aggressive bids for attention.
Having no choice, he submitted to Casey’s demand for conversation. He was surprised to find that talking actually seemed to do him good.
“You don’t know anything about making money. I know how to get guys to flush money into you,” Casey boasted.
“What do you mean?” Mr. Kleinberg asked, feigning interest.
“You business people are all busy using fancy techniques to get people to give you money. You know how we get a new customer? We give out drugs for free. He tries it once, we give it to him again for free, now he’s hooked and he’ll give us all the money he owns and doesn’t own just to get his fix. Now, that’s smart business!” Casey declared.
“Hmm, that makes sense,” Mr. Kleinberg said.
“Come on! It’s brilliant! Admit that it’s a clever tactic,” Casey said, standing over Mr. Kleinberg.
“Did you come up with it yourself?”
“Nah, it’s standard practice. Every dealer knows
that this is the best way to do it. It’s you guys who haven’t got any sense in your brain.”
He measured Mr. Kleinberg. “The first time you do something against the law, and here you are, already in jail. I’ve been dealing in drugs for twenty-five years, since I’m a teenager. They were never able to catch me!”
Mr. Kleinberg refrained from pointing out that the current circumstances showed that the police had obviously managed to accomplish their goal.
Seeing that Casey was waiting for him to continue the conversation, Mr. Kleinberg asked, “So how did you get into dealing?”
A bit of the bluster went out of Casey’s stance, as if he was remembering something less than pleasant.
“Look, if you lived where I lived, you wouldn’t ask that question. Anyone who was anything in our neighborhood worked in drugs. That’s just how it went. I wouldn’t have a life if I wasn’t in drugs. And I wasn’t gonna stay at the bottom and let other people make money off my sweat. So I got everyone out of the way until I became the king.”
Mr. Kleinberg couldn’t help but cringe listening to Casey casually describe his career.
The worst part was that he did wonder: had he been born in Casey’s shoes, would he indeed have ended up just like Casey? At their root, were they both fueled by the very same desire for power?
“The bail hearing has been scheduled,” Harry told Shachne, a note of disbelief in his voice. “It’s going to be on Thursday morning.”
“That gives you enough time to prepare better, doesn’t it?”
“Yes, and it also gives the prosecution time to consider if they even want to bring this case to court, or if they’ll settle for a plea bargain.”
“What does that mean?”
“The prosecutors will offer a deal, called a plea bargain, that if Sam decides to plead guilty, they’ll give him certain things in exchange. A lighter sentence, for example. They can also ask him to give testimony at other cases in the investigation. I think there were five new arrests made since the new scandal broke, so if Sam has testimony relevant to those cases, he might get off even easier.”
“You think he should plead guilty?” Shachne asked uncertainly. “Won’t that just prove the media right? That will mean he’s for sure going to jail.”
“Let’s be honest and straight here, Shachne. Originally, I felt that the chances of your brother getting out of jail were so slim that they were practically nil. And that applied almost as much to his chances of ever getting out of jail altogether, in this lifetime. I never even bothered mentioning
“BETTER THAN BEING SURROUNDED BY GIRLS WHO WERE TREATING HER JUST THE WAY SHE’D TREATED THEM NOT TOO LONG BEFORE.”
the plea deal, because I didn’t think it would be of any help. The prosecutors know how strong their case is, and they structure the plea deal based on that. It for sure would have meant years in prison.”
“How does all this affect the bail hearing?”
“It doesn’t, not really, though if the prosecutors are offering a lighter plea deal they’re also less likely to fight very hard against bail, since they know we’ll probably settle and negotiate with them on the deal.”
“Got it,” Shachne said. “Did you talk to my brother about all this already?”
“We had a quick call where I updated him, but I don’t know if he understands the full scope of what it means for his chances. The truth is that we don’t know either. We’ll have to wait and see.”
Bruchi chewed her apple carefully, determined to make her after-school snack stretch as long as possible, so she wouldn’t have to face the inevitable boredom that followed through a long night empty of socializing.
Slowly, the eighth graders were getting used to the new status quo, with Bruchi as the dethroned queen of the class. A lot of them found the change to be a positive one.
The only one who couldn’t get used to her new status was Bruchi herself, of course.
It was hard to feel invisible in a classroom where her word had been law. No, it was far more than hard. It was unbearable. It was so painful that she counted the minutes until she would be able to go home. Even though her home offered little respite from her situation, it was still better than this.
Better than being surrounded by girls who were treating her just the way she’d treated them not too long before.
That was probably what hurt most about the treatment she was getting: that if she were very honest with herself, she would admit that she probably deserved it.
She had manipulated the girls in her class, playing on her power to raise girls up or bring them down. For those girls she’d marginalized, had it been as painful to be treated that way then as this was for her now?
Like Mali, a perky girl with a lot to say who
had tried to hang on to Bruchi’s group. Bruchi had very subtly made it clear that Mali wasn’t welcome, but Mali had kept on trying anyway.
Scenes from their interactions flashed in Bruchi’s mind.
Bruchi sitting with Zlaty at her side and another three girls who were part of the in-group right then. Mali sidling over to join their heated conversation.
“Is that a new watch?” Mali asked Zlaty, looking at the Michael Kors wristwatch on Zlaty’s wrist. Zlaty cast a sidelong glance at Bruchi’s shiny Michelle timepiece. Then she turned back to Mali. “Nah, it’s an old thing that I got in the beginning of the year,” she said.
“Yeah, I’m also asking my mother for a new watch already,” Bruchi threw out casually. “I got this one for the first day of school, but I’m bored of it already.”
The other eighth graders were quiet for a moment, as some of them wondered what would happen to Bruchi’s Michelle watch when she was done with it.
“Actually, I was going to ask my mother to buy me a Movado. We’re almost in high school already, you know?” Zlaty said, trying to get the same admiring respect.
“Movado!” Mali exclaimed, but Bruchi’s words drowned her out.
“Nah, who needs a Movado? For Mali, Zlaty’s Michael Kors is good enough, isn’t it?”
“Well, I do like it,” Mali said bravely, but no one was listening to her. They all pretended she wasn’t there, as they continued talking about the new styles that they liked. Mali could have been air for the amount her presence was acknowledged.
Thinking back to it now, and to so many other scenes like it, Bruchi wondered if Mali had felt that same desperation that she felt every day now. Back then, it had been self-understood. Like, you didn’t just walk over to Bruchi’s group and decide you were part of it like Mali had tried to do. Of course she’d had to put Mali in her place.
Now she wondered how much hurt she had caused with that casual assumption that she ran the show.

1 lb. white or cremini mushrooms, peeled
2-3 medium zucchini (yellow or green)
⅔ cup olive oil

Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 400° and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
2. Cut the mushrooms into quarters (do larger chunks rather than smaller).

4. Spread the vegetables on a single lay on the prepared baking sheet (use two baking sheets if one is too overcrowded).
5. Toss with maple syrup and soy sauce. Sprinkle with salt and pepper.
6. Roast for 20 minutes. Stir the vegetables and return to oven. Bake for an additional 20 minutes. Remove from oven and set aside (you can cover with foil to keep warm).
7. Spread a layer of spring mix on a serving dish. Place the warm vegetables on top. Drizzle with some extra virgin olive oil and sprinkle with toasted walnuts and feta (optional).
ZUCCHINI BREAKFAST MUFFINS
Fluffy, super moist and the perfect way to use up your generous supply of summer zucchini!
Yield: 18 cupcake-sized muffins
Directions:
2 small or 1 large zucchini (yellow or green)
2 cups all-purpose-flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
½ teaspoon baking soda
½ teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon cinnamon
½ cup granulated sugar
½ cup brown sugar
2 large eggs
⅓ cup sweetened applesauce
¼ cup oil
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
1. Preheat the oven to 350°. Line 18 cupcake tins with liners.
2. Wash the zucchini well and trim off the stems.
3. Using the large holes on a box grater (or the medium grater attachment in your food processor), grate the zucchini. In total, you should have 2 cups of grated zucchini.
4. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and sugars, until well combined. Add the eggs, applesauce, oil, and vanilla extract, and stir with a fork until smooth. Add the grated zucchini and mix until a batter forms.
5. Divide the batter between the lined cupcake tins.
6. Bake for 26-28 minutes or until golden brown and puffed in the center. Allow the muffins to cool for about 5 minutes. Enjoy!
Note: Freezes well. Just make sure to remove the paper liners (they're very sticky) before storing in an airtight container or Ziploc bag.
CHEESY ZOODLES
When you’re craving something warm and cheesy but want to forgo on the carbs, here is just the thing.
Ingredients:
2 medium yellow or green zucchinis, washed
2 tablespoons butter or oil
2 cloves garlic
2 tablespoons flour
1 cup milk
2-3 tablespoons cream cheese
1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
½ teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon black pepper
Crumbled feta cheese, for topping
Directions:
1. Use a spiralizer to make zucchini noodles (zoodles) from the zucchinis. If you don't have a spiralizer, you can use a julienne peeler or a mandoline slicer. Set aside.
2. In a large skillet or saucepan, melt the butter and garlic over medium heat. Once melted, add the flour and whisk continuously until the mixture is smooth and slightly golden.
3. Gradually add the milk to the roux, whisking constantly to prevent lumps. Continue to cook and whisk until the mixture thickens, about 3-4 minutes.
4. Add the softened cream cheese and stir until it melts and combines with the milk mixture.
5. Reduce the heat to low and gradually add the shredded mozzarella cheese, stirring continuously until it melts and the sauce is smooth. Season with salt and pepper.
6. Add the zoodles to the cheese sauce and toss to evenly coat. Cook for 5-6 minutes until the zoodles are heated through and slightly tender but still firm (cook for longer if you prefer a softer texture).
7. Remove from heat and transfer the cheesy zoodles to serving plates. Garnish with crumbled feta, freshly chopped parsley, and some more black pepper. Serve.

NINE A.M. IS A COMPLETELY FICTIONAL STORY WHICH TAKES PLACE FIFTY YEARS AFTER THE HOLOCAUST.
RECAP OF CHAPTER 28: Early one morning, Elky’s mother-in-law gifts her with a new handbag in honor of Elky’s promotion at work. She waits for Elky to walk with her to work afterward, but she is both puzzled and hurt when Elky shuts the door and doesn’t leave the house altogether.
Dena is feeling bored and empty.
CHAPTER TWENTY EIGHT
In exchange for this document, products and merchandise will be supplied for a value of up to 5 Reichsmarks.
Supply of the merchandise is conditioned on the original document being complete, and affirmed by a stamp from the lager management and the signature of an authorized person.
The letters were not prominent or etched onto a highly valuable piece of paper, but Elky passed her finger over them as if she could actually feel them. She slipped the last paper in the pile into the new bag her mother-in-law had given her and stood up. Now where would be the right place for this to go?
Until now, the vouchers she’d gotten from Naomi were squirrelled away in a cabinet under the Shabbos towel. But it made much more sense to store them in a good handbag with a solid clasp, like the one she’d received just right now. Maybe she’d put the handbag with the vouchers in it at the bottom of her linen chest.
Elky went over to the yellow-painted wooden chest that stood in the corner of the room and opened its small lock. She lifted one of the two thick winter quilts her mother had ordered for them, in exchange for taking upon herself more work hours. She
was preparing to hide the handbag underneath it, but then she suddenly realized something: she’d have to show the bag to Mottel! His mother might ask him what her daughter-in-law had thought of the gift, and Elky could not allow a situation where he would not know what she was talking about.
And to start explaining to him where she’d gotten the vouchers from…that was too complicated.
With a sigh, Elky returned the quilt to its place, straightened it, and closed the yellow lid of the chest. It squeaked slightly, and she clutched the handbag again. Where could she hide her precious little stash? Should she put it back under the Shabbos towel?
Sighing yet again, she turned to the closet behind the wooden partition that separated the two tiny rooms and opened it. She pulled out the stack of notes from the bag and stuck them once again under the large white towel. There, they were safe, more or less. No one touched this place from one Erev Shabbos to the next.
Wait—was that the bell at the factory ringing?
Couldn’t be.
But…yes! It was the bell!
Elky stood up, her face pale. The distinct sound sliced through the air and pierced her ears. The work day was beginning this minute, and she was still here, at home! Where was Mottel’s mother, who had left a few seconds earlier? Would she also
be late because of her visit? That was very unlike her; she was usually so well-calculated.
Or perhaps she’d already left a while ago?
Elky slapped the closet door closed. How much time had passed since her mother-in-law had walked out?
It hadn’t been nice to see her out like that instead of walking to work with her. But the bag was so perfect for Elky, it seemed to have been sewn just for those precious vouchers, and she felt that she had to check if it was the right fit, even before going to the office. She’d been very unfocused the day before, thinking about the fact that her most valuable possessions were resting in a most unsecure place.
Too bad; she wouldn’t be relaxed today either. But in the evening, she’d show Mottel the bag his mother had brought, so that he could thank her on Shabbos, when they’d see each other. Then she could quietly stick all the notes and vouchers into the gift and find it a good hiding place. Tomorrow, she’d be able to go to work with peace of mind.
Elky’s face clouded when she remembered her mother-in-law’s expression as she’d walked out the door. Mottel would thank his mother on Shabbos, but what would she tell her dear son about the ill-mannered ending to the visit?
She didn’t think it was so bad for them not to walk together, precluding them from becoming a topic of conversation for all the blabbermouths who would pass them, but maybe her motherin-law thought that it was bad. Now, as she thought about it properly, it didn’t make a good impression at all. Especially as lots of women would figure out which direction her mother-inlaw was coming from and would be surprised as to why she was walking alone. She sincerely hoped they wouldn’t think that their relationship had soured. Ugh, that was all she needed!
And being late…she needed that even more!
Elky dashed outside and slammed the door behind her. Eva Sherer sometimes allowed herself to be a few minutes late, and if she’d do that today as well, she might not even find out about Elky’s tardiness. On the other hand, if she was already at the office, she and her father and the other workers might think that Elka Kush was starting to lift her nose up in the air since her latest promotion, and she was allowing herself to be lax about timing. Elky went out to the main path and began to run. If Eva was on time today, that was the worst-case scenario for her.
Actually not. There was an even worse scenario waiting for her, at the fork in the path. It was wearing a brown uniform and studying the young woman running in her direction.
“Good morning,” she greeted Elky coolly.
“Good morning.” Elky stopped and lowered her gaze. Of all the creations in the world, this Gefreiter had to appear right here, right now? Since when were they up so early, anyway?
“I’m just on my way to speak with Eva Sherer and you,” Teresa said as she folded her arms. “Thank you for the shortcut.” What was she supposed to reply to that? “Yes, I’m running late today”? The arrogant woman she was facing knew that already. So she remained silent, and sufficed with a nod that was half bashful, half apologetic as she fixed her gaze on the triangle symbol on the Gefreiter’s collar.
“We were thinking of holding a birthday party for my sister,” Teresa explained. “For your information, I play piano. My sister sings beautifully. We wanted to have a party for her in the garden of the manor house, and to invite you to it.”
“Us?” It took Elky two full seconds to grope for something to say, and even once she did, she wasn’t sure it was the most successful choice. But she couldn’t think of anything else to utter.
“Yes. You know, we can’t invite our friends and relatives to this place,” the shikse said, blinking rapidly. “We’re afraid for your lives. So during longer periods of time, when no one from the outside comes in, we look for ways to spice up our lives a bit. And this is what my sister suggested.”
Now she needed to thank this woman warmly for the protection they were being given, and to apologize for the self-imposed boredom of the extended Wangel family, and to respond to this invitation, all at once. But Teresa did not wait for Elky to compose this complex response.
“So give over the message to Eva that she should think which of you young women would enjoy such a party,” she continued.
“And you can also ask some of your friends if they want to come.
I’ll stop by the office tomorrow—I hope you’ll be on time—and we’ll make up an exact time, in the late afternoon hours, okay? We’ll make sure that the participants are released from work at six, and that they get a permit to be outside until ten.”
She didn’t wait for an answer, turning arrogantly and marching away, Elky took a deep breath and continued running. Now she’d be able to tell Eva that Teresa had stopped her on the way for a conversation.
But Teresa might tell Eva that it had been after the bell to begin with.
She’d be better off revealing the truth.
And after she’d reveal that she simply had not realized the passing time, because she was busy with something urgent and important, she’d tell Eva about the strange encounter and the even stranger invitation. Eva and her friends would probably be happy to attend this party. But she? And her friends?
For some reason, Naomi’s image rose in Elky’s mind, and a crooked smile crossed her lips. Naomi would not be coming— that much was certain. ***
“If we would have been zocheh, and Mordechai Hayehudi would be here with us…” Babbe Sarah Liba, the unofficial leader of the frum group, said, “then it’s possible he would say not to go, even if this birthday party will only have cakes that are kosher.” They were standing near the main dining hall, a few minutes before the nine evening chimes, with Elky and her mother Ruchelle’s eyes fixed on the older woman.
“But because we were not zocheh, and nevuah has been taken from us, we can only try to understand ourselves what Hashem wants from us now.” She sighed. “We don’t want to be closer to the non-Jews, and on the other hand, we don’t want to do anything to get them angry. So early in the afternoon, I went to ask Rav Schwartzbrod what to do, and he said that because the invitation was very explicit and direct, and a rejection would not be taken well at all, a few girls have to go. But who those girls will be is the decision of the community.” She looked at Elky, whose
fingers were twitching, seemingly involuntarily. “Elky, were you not feeling well this morning?”
“I was feeling fine,” Elky protested, and her imagination was off with images of her mother-in-law coming to consult Naomi’s grandmother about her daughter-in-law who didn’t bother to accompany her. Ugh—why did people have to make a big deal about every little thing?
“But when we came in the afternoon to discuss the party,” her mother reminded her, “you said that you left to work late, and you met the Gefreiter on your way.”
“Oh, right,” Elky said, remembering her Shabbos towel. So it wasn’t her mother-in-law who had passed on the information.
“What did you tell them at the office?”
“That I was very busy.” A small smile turned up the corners of her mouth as she remembered the towel and the little treasure buried underneath it. Her mother and Sarah Liba both noticed the smile and exchanged puzzled glances with one another.
“Hmm,” Sarah Liba said. “I think that it would be wise, first thing in the morning, to send someone to inform Sherer that you can’t come to work tomorrow, or to the birthday party.”
“I shouldn’t go to work tomorrow?” Elky opened her eyes wide.
“Nor the day after tomorrow.”
“You really do have a bit of a cold,” Ruchelle said to her daughter worriedly. “All you need is to get pneumonia, right?”
“Right. But what will be with my salary?”
Naomi’s grandmother looked at her. “It’s just two days. It’s not so terrible.”
“It is terrible.” She took a deep breath. “And what’s this whole show about, anyway? So that I shouldn’t go to a silly party at the manor house? Then who will go?”
“We’ll see.”
“Who, Naomi?” Elky felt like a stubborn, rebellious little girl, but at that moment, she didn’t care. There was something deeper going on here, and this was not what she’d had in mind when she’d come to her mother at lunchtime, and they’d gone together to consult the wisest woman in the camp.
“I would go,” Sarah Liba replied with a smile, neither confirming nor denying Elky’s hunch. “But at my age, I don’t think I’m a very desirable guest.”
And that was all Naomi’s grandmother would say on the
BE FIT WITH BENEFIT
QHi and thank you so much for your weekly column! It is really informative and I really enjoy it. Regarding exercise, I am almost 40 and don’t particularly enjoy exercising. I do enjoy walking though. I want to stay in shape and do exercise. I see so many advertisements for so many different methods… What is a balanced and basic exercise to do on a weekly basis to stay fit and healthy? I really appreciate your time in reading this. Thanks so much!
AThank you for your feedback on my column. It is readers as yourself that propel me to go on, week after week! While you are super young, I do want you to understand that many women start complaining about weight gain in their mid-40’s-50’s. Among the many adjustments that come with that stage of life, maintaining a healthy weight becomes increasingly important. While it's a common belief that metabolism slows down with age, recent research suggests otherwise. Other factors, such as loss of muscle mass and hormonal shifts, can significantly impact weight management. Contrary to popular belief, metabolism doesn't inherently slow down as we age. Instead, what often happens is a decline in muscle mass. Since muscle tissue burns more calories than fat tissue, this loss can lead to a decrease in metabolic rate. As a result, even if you continue eating the same amount of food, you may find it easier to gain weight and harder to lose it, so your question is important, particularly as you are nearing your 40’s.
One of the most effective ways to combat muscle loss and maintain a healthy weight is through regular physical activity. Incorporating a combination of cardiovascular exercises, strength training, and flexibility exercises can help address different aspects of fitness while supporting overall health. Let’s break these exercise modalities down a bit:
1. Cardiovascular Exercises: Activities like brisk walking, cycling, swimming, or dancing can elevate your heart rate, improve circulation, and boost calorie expenditure. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderateintensity aerobic activity per week, as recommended by health experts.
2. Strength Training: Strength training exercises, using resistance bands, free weights, or machines, are crucial for preserving and building muscle mass. This not only enhances metabolism but also improves bone density, balance, and functional capacity. Aim for two to three sessions per week, targeting major muscle groups.
3. Flexibility and Balance Exercises: Yoga, and Pilates are excellent choices for improving flexibility, balance, and core strength. These exercises not only promote
physical well-being but also support mental relaxation and stress reduction, which are essential components of a holistic weight management strategy.
For starters, please understand, that you do not have to join a gym to work out! Exercise can be fast, fun, cheap and effective when done in the comfort of your own home. I like to teach my clients that they can incorporate movement while they are anyway doing housework. For instance, when washing dishes, focus on strengthening and lifting your pelvic floor. When bending down to bathe your kids, you can work on strengthening your pelvic floor as well. (You can learn the proper way of doing so from a personal trainer, or your doctor) Do the exercises that work for you. Enjoy what you are doing. It is important to want to exercise. There are various forms and styles of exercise. Find the one that speaks to you most. You can opt for cardio, yoga, swimming, walking, running, or dancing. Simply dancing with your children and getting your heart rate up is amazing for you! Brisk walking on a crisp morning can do wonders for your physical and mental health! Swimming in a community or backyard pool can literally make you feel like a new person! The key is to work out smarter and not harder. Exercise should not be taking up your life.
The bottom line is that you need to choose a form of exercise that works for you. Being rigid with your workouts will make it stressful and this added stress can have the opposite effect on your health. Also, I always tell my clients, while 30 minutes of movement daily is the recommended amount of exercise, it does not have to be an all or none approach. If you can only add 10 minutes of movement to your schedule daily, enjoy these 10 minutes! These 10 minutes can add up to an hour of movement at the end of the week, and yes, an hour of movement is significant! Listen to your body. Do not stress about working out and do not overstress your body by introducing too many new moves at once. Slow and steady wins the race! Take one day at a time and you will see significant improvement. If you are pregnant or suffer from medical/health conditions, please consult with your doctor before incorporating any form of movement.

In this week’s Parsha, Bilam tried to curse the Jewish people. On his way to the mountaintop, his donkey saw an an- gel in front of him, got scared, and refused to continue walking. Bilam hit the donkey and mi- raculously, the donkey be- gan to speak! As Bilam tried to curse the Jews, Hashem changed his words and turned the curses into Brachos.
There was once a poor man named Yosef. Every week he saved his few coins to buy the best food for Shabbos. He was known as Yosef Mokir Shabbos (Yosef who honored Shabbos). One day, a star gazer told his wealthy neigh- bor that he would lose all his money and go to Yosef Mokir Shabbos. The rich man was shocked to hear this and made a plan so that Yosef would never get the money. The rich man decided to use all his money to buy a huge diamond and sewed the diamond safely into a hat. He wore this hat all the time, making sure that Yosef Mokir Shabbos would not get that diamond. One day the rich man was walking over a bridge and a gust of wind came and blew off his hat. He watched as the diamond floated into the water, and got swallowed by a large fish. The wealthy man was devastated as all his wealth was now gone. A few days later, on Erev Shabbos the fisherman caught a huge fish. He asked Yosef Mokir Shabbos if he would like to buy the fish. Of course he agreed and went to prepare the fish for Shabbos. When Yosef cut open the fish, he could not believe his eyes! Inside the fish was a huge diamond! The very diamond from the rich man’s hat. Yosef sold the diamond and became a wealthy man. Just the way Hashem had planned.
BRING IT HOME
Think of a time when something was really challenging for you, and you thought it wouldn’t turn out well. Then you realized that with Hashem’s help, it turned out way better than you expected
DELVING DEEPER
Balak the King of Moav hires the well-known sorcerer and prophet Bilam to curse the Jewish people. However, Hash- em had a different plan and changed Bilam’s curse into a beautiful Bracha – the famous phrase that we say each morning – Mah Tovu Ohalecha Yaakov. From here we see everything comes from Hashem. Even when something seems so terrible, if Hashem wants a different outcome, anything is possible and Hashem can change something so evil into beautiful brachos.
Suminagashi Marbling Doneky Art PARSHA
Take a big tray and fill its surface with a thick layer of shaving foam, then smooth it out.
Place the canvas back in the shaving foam. ¾ should be covered with blue and ¼ with green and yellow. Press the canvas down, then take out.
Color the donkey with a silver maker, then take a pencil and color over the nose, hair and tail. Using blue and green sharpies add details to the sky and grass.
Add drops of green and blue liquid watercolors as shown.
Take the scraper and scrape all the foam, moving from the green side to the blue. Let it dry.
Your Suminagashi Marbling Donkey Art is ready!
Take a stick and make swirls on the blue side. Clean up the stick and make upward strokes on the green side as shown.
Place the donkey template on top of canvas. Take a pen and trace the donkey, by pressing hard, a colorless outline of the donkey will be left. Next, take a black sharpie and trace over outline.

"This is the way of the Torah: Bread with salt you shall eat, water in small measure you shall drink, on the ground you shall sleep, a life of privation you shall live, and toil in Torah. If you do this, "Fortunate will you be, and it will be good for you." “Fortunate will you be" in this world, and "it will be good for you" in the World to Come."
Two days before the new school year began, I sat down with my children with the list of supplies they needed and the piles of things they had from the previous year.
Chavy and Libby squealed as they filled their pencil cases with yellow and pink highlighters and lovingly put the bulging pencil cases in their briefcases.
I scrutinized their briefcases for a quick moment, noting the scratches in the leather, the small hole by the zipper, and the matted design. Hmmm. On second
glance, looking at it overall, it looked fine. By the second week of school they anyways didn’t have that shiny look, and if they were two years old already, what did it matter? Besides, my kids weren’t complaining. So why would I?
We methodically ticked off the list of supplies, and I was pleasantly surprised that this year, all we needed were 3-prong folders, a two-inch binder, and some new white-outs.
Next, we tackled the uniform. B”H I had no first grader this year, and my other girls had gotten everything new the year before. Their shirts still looked starched, and their sweaters were in good condition, if a little faded. The skirts would go to the cleaners - much cheaper than buying even one new skirt.
The first day dawned bright and early. I woke up from my alarm at 7:00 and prepared scrambled eggs for the kids while they donned their uniforms.
My husband popped in after his morning shiur, and I quickly served him and sent him off to kollel with his lunch.
By ten minutes after eight, we were all out the door. Ironed shirts, freshly pleated skirts, and perfectly braided hair.
My heart skipped a beat as the bus rounded the curb and my girls clambered up. The older two climbed up excitedly and waved from the bus, while my third-grader looked back for a reassuring smile before stepping in.
The bus left with a roar, and I murmured a quick tefillah that everything go well for all of them. Then I rushed in, changed out of my splattered clothing into a black cardigan and fresh skirt. I brushed down my sheitel, grabbed my teacher’s bag, and defrosted chicken for supper before stepping out for my van.
That’s when I saw her - my neighbor Chany. Her kids were waiting at the bus stop with her, trendy headbands in their hair, and sparkling loafers on their feet. She waved and I returned the gesture.
The van was still not here by the time her kids’ buses pulled up - it always took time for the transportation to settle at the beginning of the year.
Chany ambled over with an incredulous look.
‘Wow, you’re really heading out to work on the first day of school? Don’t your kids need you there when they come home?”
I swallowed tightly and was about to respond that my husband would be home for the earlier bus, and by the second bus I would be home waiting for them, but she continued.
“And besides, how much longer do you think you can continue like this? Working as a mother of five children while barely making enough to cover the bills?”
Her voice was curious, not accusatory, but her words pierced straight through me and stabbed at my heart.
“Don’t get me wrong,” she added,
“What you’re doing is amazing. But how long can you tell your kids that you can’t afford that trip or toy that all their friends are talking about? I don’t mean to insult you, but I think you’re just not being realistic.”
I looked around the corner with desperation, hoping my van would appear and save me from answering. But the street was quiet and calm.
“I hear you,” I said lamely. “I have to go check on my van,” and I hastily turned and ran for the sanctuary of home. The moment the door closed behind me, the tears appeared.
The difficulties, the uncertainties, the guilt, it all swam to the surface.
Memories of tough calls about tuition breaks, saying no the Shabbos outfit my daughter loved because it was out of our budget, the long hours I coached teachers in the summer so we could pay for Sruly’s braces.
Was Chany right? Were my kids losing out by having a mother who worked four days a week? Were they losing out because their parents didn’t know how they would pay rent the following month, let alone extra expenses like wardrobes for the new season?
Was it time to push my husband to get a job, maybe even just tutoring boys or being a melamed? Perhaps the time had come? How much longer could we keep this up?
More memories surfaced - my kids asking why we never bought meat like their friends mother’s did, receiving bags from my sisters with their children’s outfits from the previous season, attending simchas in my 5-year old sheitel while all my sisters wore new, updated styles.
Chany’s comments stung. It doubled the difficulties, added fire to my uncertainties, loaded on the guilt.
But I couldn’t sit and wallow in misery now. I have to be in the classroom in ten minutes. Wiping away my tears, I put in a call to the school about the delayed van.
That night, at supper, I brought up the conversation, careful to omit Chany’s name.
My husband listened carefully as he chewed the chicken nuggets and rice I had thrown together barely thirty minutes ago.
“Rivky, you know we thought about this carefully. Why would a neighbor’s comment make you doubt yourself? We’re doing the right thing. We asked daas Torah, we thought it through from every angle. Just let the comment slip off you.”
He was right. Of course, he was right. But I found it difficult to heed his advice and just forget about that comment.
Every time I saw Chany, the memory of her remarks surfaced and I felt the sting again.
The days passed quickly, and soon Sukkos was upon us.
I had no idea how we would afford new robes for the children, daled minim, meats and wine for Yom Tov.
But as usual, everything fell into place.
My sister sent over robes her girls had worn last year. One of her daughter had worn it for only half a season before she shot up a few inches and it was small on her. My sister had a bunch of girls similar ages to mine and she wanted them all in matching robes, so all the barely used robes came to us.
I got paid on time and even got
“You’re working to build your house down here. I’m working to build our house up in shamayim.”
a nice bonus, which covered the Yom Tov expenses.
And then, erev Sukkos, I opened the fridge to get milk for my early-morning coffee, but it was room temperature. With rising dread, I removed other items, fruits and yogurts and pans of apple muffins I had baked last night - nothing was cold.
When my husband came home, he inspected it and ruefully announced, “The fridge is a goner. We need a new one.”
Deep breath. Focus on the positive. At least none of my Yom Tov meats had been in the fridge overnight.
But how? How were we going to cover this new expense? We had just about scratched by, paying only for what was strictly necessary to get to Yom Tov. From where would we pull out a few hundred dollars now?
My husband reassured me that everything would fall into place and stayed around a few minutes to ensure I was fine.
I shooed him off to learn. “Don’t worry about me, we’ll figure this out, Hashem will help,” I said optimistically. But inside, I didn’t feel as optimistic.
My sister called just then, and I jumped at the chance to thank her for the clothing she had sent over.
“Oh, I’m happy it’s coming to good use,” she said. And then she went on breathlessly, “You know my husband has ties with this baal tzedaka from the community? So he called my
husband and asked him for a favor - he wants to donate money to someone for Yom Tov, but not just money - he wants the money to go towards a certain large expense, like a fridge or freezer. He wants to know where his money is going.”
I actually laughed. “Don’t pull the wool over my eyes. I know you’re joking.”
“Why would I be joking? You want to speak to him directly to confirm?”
“Come on. You know that my fridge broke down and you’re trying to help.”
“Your fridge broke down?” Her voice was incredulous, and it hit me then that this was real.
Yet another kiss from Hashem.
The first night of Sukkos, I served hot apple-cinnamon tea with fresh mango slices, cold from our new fridge.
The table was cleared, the kids in PJ’s, and a balmy breeze ruffled through our Sukkah.
My husband opened a Sefer and hummed the timeless sweet melody, steam rising from the tall glass at his elbow.
I looked up at the stars twinkling above and felt wrapped in Hashem’s embrace.
If only I could hold on to this feeling of contentment, of knowing I was doing the right thing, of clarity, of love.
I really tried. Throughout that long winter, I tried to forget Chany’s words and lean into Hashem’s embrace. And he
came through for us, every single time.
And then the new school year was upon us again.
As I waited for my children’s buses, gently reassuring them and listening to their prattle about who would be their new teachers, my neighbor’s door opened and she stepped out. Chany.
But this time, she was dressed in a blazer and perfectly set sheitel, carrying a pocketbook with her.
“Hi Chany,” I said, mustering all my enthusiasm to sound friendly and sincerely happy to see her.
“Hi,” she said briskly.
“Heading out to do errands?” I asked conversationally.
“No,” she replied, blushing slightly. “I’m starting a new job today.”
My mouth must have dropped open because she hurried to explain. “We’re building a new house, and we need the additional salary to cover the mortgage.”
I opened my mouth. Closed it. So many thoughts and words swirled through my mind. Her accusations from last year. A mother belonging home with the children, not working to support the family.
I finally found my voice.
“Chany,” I said softly, mindful of my kid’s inquisitive faces, “You’re working to build your house down here. I’m working to build our house up in shamayim.”
