Recap: Mrs. Kleinberg comes home from PTA fuming that Mrs. Tabak offered extra help for Bruchi. Bruchi confides in her mother that she’s upset at how her friends are treating her, but her mother doesn’t offer the sympathy she wants. Suddenly, Mrs. Kleinberg gets a phone call from Shachne that there’s been a big breakthrough.
Mrs. Gordon needs to decide whether to take the job at her sister-in-law’s agency. Her husband suggests doing a mock-vote where everyone who will be affected by her decision casts a vote.
“So now, after all this, it’s still up to me?” Mrs. Gordon said incredulously as she looked at the table with its two piles of Post-It notes.
Nachman looked sheepish.
“No overwhelming majority, huh?”
They both looked at the piles, which, after Mrs. Gordon had gone through them and added votes for “priority opinions,” were pretty much equal.
After another few moments spent staring, Mrs. Gordon looked back up.
“But you know, that’s why this vote is silly.”
“What do you mean?”
“If all my kids’ votes, except Chayala’s, are in one
pile, then that is definitely the right choice to make. It shouldn’t even be a question, no matter how big the other pile gets. My kids come first.”
She thought another minute. “Even though…”
“What’s even though? That it’ll be hard for you to disappoint all these people?” Nachman gestured to the other pile of notes.
Mrs. Gordon’s face took on an anguished look. “And even more, I feel like I’ll be disappointing myself.” She said quietly.
Nachman looked at her intently. She looked away.
“I know, I know, it’s such a shallow reason to put before my kids,” she said miserably. “But now that I think about it, that’s a lot of where this is coming from. My silly pride. I feel like leaving my job will mean admitting to everyone and to myself that I’m not Supermom, not Superprincipal, not super anything actually.”
“Even though you know that it’s not true.”
“Well, if I were more, well, maybe more efficient, more emotionally strong, I don’t know, more of something, I could handle all of this fine and I wouldn’t be breaking under the pressure or neglecting anything at home.”
“More of an angel, you mean?”
“No, really,” Mrs. Gordon protested. “There are so many school principals out there raising large families and none of them seem to be having the kind of dilemmas that I’m constantly facing.”
“They don’t know about yours, so how would you know about theirs?” Nachman pointed out logically.
Mrs. Gordon shrugged. “Oh, I don’t know, that’s just the feeling I have. I’m pretty sure none of them get so worked up about things,” she said, tracing the outline of one of the names on a Post-It note with her finger. She traced it over and over, lost in thought. How immature was it to allow an inferiority complex to decide what her career would look like? If that was the real reason she was having a hard time finalizing her decision to cut ties with Bnos Golda, the principal part of herself wouldn’t accept that. No.
The desire to prove she was strong enough to do it all would not factor into this equation. Slowly, the steely resolve she used in all her work interactions surfaced. Be brutally honest, she told herself. Was her fear of admitting weakness stopping her from doing what she had to do for her family?
Looking at the pile of votes, she wondered how many people would really be negatively affected by her decision to leave. After all, Mr. Seidman was sure to hire a new principal who would be just as competent and caring as her. Maybe even more so.
Anyone with the right qualifications could replace her as a principal. But no one could take her over as her children’s mother.
Nachman watched the expressions flitting across his wife’s face quietly, giving her space to process her thoughts.
“Why do I think my teachers will really mind if I leave?” she finally expressed what she was thinking. “If a new principal is hired who will do an even better job, will it matter that much to them? No. It’s just my own pride that thinks that they need me so much.”
“No one will do as good of a job as you can do,” Nachman asserted. “No, I’m not just saying that because I’m your husband. It’s a fact that someone new is never going to be as good as someone with experience. And for the people you’re working with, there is always that adjustment period when someone new comes in. So yes, it really will make a difference to them, at least in the shortterm.”
“So…”
“I’m pointing out that you don’t have to rethink everything we said just because you realized that you’re human, that’s all,” Nachman hurried to explain. “Of course, the biggest, most longterm impact will still be on our kids, and no one else can replace you as their mother. That’s for sure.”
Hearing her thoughts echoed by her husband gave them even more validity to Mrs. Gordon. Leaving her job now seemed so right, she couldn’t imagine how she’d ever thought it was a good idea to stay. Just for some nostalgia? That wasn’t a good reason.
She felt her sense of sureness growing as she said, “That’s it, then. I’m going to call Devorah and tell her I’m taking the job.”
True to his word, Nachman didn’t say anything. This decision was completely up to her.

Breaking News: New Updates at Tee gets the FTC Involved
By: James Pivven
Tee has been promising its advertisers new targeting options for a while. It’s the only way they keep up their reputation as offering, “the most targeted advertising options that exist.” That’s a high standard, especially with recent competition in the space.
This week, Tee announced what their new targeting
options would be.
“Advertisers will be able to target consumers based on spending habits across industries, spending preferences across ecomm, digital purchasing, brick and mortar spending, and education spending, as well as current and previous income brackets, previous purchase volume across multiple industries, debt history, credit history, family size and structure, cultural spending habit brackets and other categories to be revealed with the launch.”
The announcement brought a rush of outraged feedback that Tee hadn’t expected. Hundreds of advertisers who had been notified of the planned new options wanted to know how Tee had gotten their data. Tee promised that they would give a full transparent review of their data sources with the new update, but customers were not happy with that response. The concerns American consumers raised with Tee’s planned update led the FTC to launch an investigation into the legality of Tee’s data collection across its user accounts.
By: Bill Gallagher
This week, Tee unrolled their upcoming update for advertisers. They mentioned, “Most precise targeting yet,” and, “More insight than any other program on the market.”
Which led some of us to ask, where is Tee going to get all that insight from?
It’s a murky question, like any other involving Tee, because most of the data they collect is from their own users, which they then sell as a service
to advertisers looking for targeted marketing. But when you read the fine print on Tee’s planned releases, it doesn’t seem that any user would have voluntarily allowed True access to this kind of info.
Tee claims that with their update, you will be able to target people based on, “spending habits, spending preferences, income brackets, previous purchase volume, debt amount, credit history, family size, cultural spending brackets, and more.” That’s an awful lot of information that Tee claims to have. Unless they’ve spent the last six years tracking every action of their millions of users and hacking all the supposedly protected Tee accounts, then there’s no way that Tee can know all of this.
No way, except when you realize the uncanny timing of this update release.
It’s been nearly two weeks now since Finance2’s crash. Just enough time for Tee to acquire all of the data that Finance2 had maliciously gathered –and make it all public to their paying advertisers.
Many experts, after carefully reviewing Tee’s announcement (which it retracted, saying that the exact parameters of the update have yet to be determined,) are sure that that is the only place that Tee could possibly gather all the info it claims to have. A secret source at the company, whose identity remains hidden, also acknowledged these suspicions by saying, “It’s not like we’ve been working on this for years. The CEO just discovered that we have this capability, like, yesterday.”
Now, if Tee planned on using Finance2 records, the question is: who sold the Finance2 data to Tee? Don’t
tell me it was Sam Kleinberg, who is sitting in jail and hasn’t even had his bail hearing yet. Kleinberg probably didn’t even have access to all that data to begin with.
So who can you blame? Joe Kant, the developer who built the software and became the most recent CEO of Finance2, who’s also in jail awaiting trial? Josh Lugoff, the startup investor who acted as CEO for most of Finance2’s growth, but then got busy with other projects? Or Kim Malley, who was appointed to take over the company since its downfall, and has been trying to make the most of the bankrupted company?
Everyone’s pointing accusing fingers in different places, and this is before we know for sure where Tee got its info from. The FTC has an investigation going, sure.
But what I want to know is this: we all rushed to condemn Kleinberg. We were sure that with him behind bars, we were safe. Instead, we let millions of personal records vanish into thin air, without blinking an eye to figure out where they were going.
Everyone knew Kleinberg didn’t have the data. He misled the world into trusting Finance2 and ruined his own bank, sure. But how did no one realize that he was not the only bad guy in the story? How did we let all that data go, without talking about who was responsible for that?
We’ve got to open our eyes, world.

“So what does this mean for Shmiel?” Mrs. Kleinberg asked Shachne, who had just finished explaining to her what was going on in the news. “Will they let him out of jail now?”
Shachne shook his head slightly,
but his ebullient smile didn’t fade. “He’s not getting out just like that, but the entire case will be so much easier now.”
Shachne hadn’t wanted to tell her what was going on over the phone. Instead, he’d driven over to her house to tell her in person. Sitting now at the dining room table, Mrs. Kleinberg was trying to process what Shachne was telling her.
“Everything is going to be much easier,” Shachne said. “The judge is not going to be so against him, the people in the street aren’t so against him anymore, there will be less reporters outside the courtroom to think about – it’s going to be a different world!”
“So do you think that he’ll have bail?” Mrs. Kleinberg asked.
“It’s definitely going to be a lot more likely now,” Shachne said. “Till now, there was basically no real reason to think that it would be possible. Now, there is. And even better, we can actually hope that he’ll have a chance to win the trial. Before this, there wasn’t much hope for that either.”
He’d never spelled it out so clearly to his sister-in-law before, but now that this breakthrough had happened, he felt free to admit it.
“Wow,” Mrs. Kleinberg said. “That means they’re finally starting to realize that this isn’t Shmiel’s fault. That’s amazing!”
They’d reached the bottom, it seemed, and the only way to go from there was up. But only now could she see that there was even a way up.
“It is,” Shachne agreed. “Now we need to make sure that we have the bail hearing right away, when the cards are still in Shmiel’s favor. We don’t know what else is going to happen.”
The comment, with its dark undertones, cooled off some of Mrs. Kleinberg’s growing joy. •

Chicken Shawarma is an all-time deli favorite. Here, we bring you a delicious loaded wrap that can easily compete with any fast food place out there.
Ingredients:
Taamti Malawach Dough (or large Wraps)
Shawarma Chicken Cutlets- see recipe
Fried or fresh sliced red onions
Fried or marinated eggplant
Chummus
Tahini
Sour Pickles or Cucumbers, sliced
Lettuce or Arugula
Easy Shawarma Chicken:
1 lb. thin chicken cutlets
1 teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon Black pepper
1-2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
3 tablespoons olive oil
1 ½ tablespoons shawarma seasoning
Directions:
Shawarma Chicken: Combine all the Shawarma chicken ingredients in a large ziploc bag. Marinate in the refrigerator for about 3 hours (up to 24 hours). Grill, cook in a pan, or bake the chicken until fully cooked through. Set aside. Prepare Malawach Dough- Defrost the malawach dough. Slightly spread each dough into a thinner and larger circle. Heat a bit of oil in a Betty Crocker or frying pan. Fry the dough until golden (not browned- because it’ll become too crispy and flaky) on each slide. If using wraps, skip this step and simply reheat the wraps.
Assembly: Spread a thin layer of Chummus on to the fried malawach dough. Layer with lettuce, onions, sour pickles, eggplant, and shawarma chicken. Fold the malawach into a wrap or taco shape. Drizzle with Tahini and serve.
With summer in full swing, it’s time to cool down with these delicious ice cream flavors. Elevate the original vanilla with these simple, yet delicious, refreshing flavors. I made these using milchig ice cream but use pareve ice cream and make these for Shabbos dessert.
DEVOIRY FEDER @SPRINKLEDBYVO
One of my favorite flavor combinations is strawberry shortcake. There’s nothing like a soft sponge, layered with cream and berries. I knew I had to make this in an ice cream version and the results were out of this world!
Ingredients:
1 tub vanilla ice cream, semi defrosted
1 16 oz container of frozen strawberries in syrup, defrosted
1/2 of a store-bought sponge cake (I used Sterns. You can also use homemade but I opted for an even easier version)
Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 350°.
2. Cut your cake into cubes and place in baking pan. Bake for 15 minutes, mixing halfway.
3. In the meantime, blend the entire container of defrosted strawberries in syrup.
4. Add your strawberry sauce into the semi defrosted ice cream and swirl in. (No need to fully mix)
5. Crumble baked sponge cake generously over the ice cream.
6. Return to freezer.
I did not think this would go over well with the little kids, but boy did they love it! Something about the peach flavor that adds an element of freshness and balances out the sweetness of the ice cream.
Ingredients:
1 tub vanilla ice cream, semi defrosted
4 cups frozen peaches
3/4 cup sugar
4 Tbsp water
Directions:
1. In a blender, add frozen peaches, sugar and water.
2. Blend very well, scraping sides occasionally.
3. Once well blended, add to semi defrosted ice cream and swirl in. Return to freezer.
This ice cream flavor is inspired by an ice cream I had in Israel recently. I had tried recreating it from scratch, making my own homemade ice cream, but this simpler version came out so good, I ditched the patchke.
Ingredients:
1 tub vanilla ice cream, semi defrosted
1 container store bought lemon curd (I use Bakers Choice)
Juice and zest of two lemons
1 bar dairy white chocolate, chopped (If making pareve, either remove completely or use white chocolate chips)
3/4 cup ABC cookies or any plain cookie, slightly crushed
Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 350°.
2. Place crushed cookies on a baking pan and bake for 5 minutes. Let cool.
3. Combine lemon curd, lemon juice and lemon zest. Mix well to combine.
4. Add chopped chocolate into the semi defrosted ice cream and mix well.
5. Swirl lemon curd into the ice cream.
6. Top generously with crushed cookies. Return to freezer.
It is not an exaggeration to say that the halachic sheilos that come up in a hospital setting number in the thousands. And the sheilos are as varied as they are numerous.
There are the many Shabbos concerns: how to call a nurse on Shabbos, adjust an electric bed, walk through automatic doors, use elevators and lights, etc. There are the hilchos tefillah considerations: when and how one may daven in a hospital room. There are the complicated halachos of a yoledes ; issues of bishul akum ; end-of-life situations; and so many other areas of halachah that are affected, for both patients and visitors in the hospital.
This sefer addresses all of these halachos, offering clarity and practical suggestions for those who find themselves in a medical situation.

Yocheved grips Etty’s hand, who gives her hand a strong squeeze in return. Is the shidduch a mistake?

NEW From Pnina Paksher, author of Fear of Falling and Geraniums on the Porch.

He has authored numerous sefarim on the topic, in addition to giving halachah shiurim to Hatzolah organizations around the country and being rav of a kehillah. 70 DAYS OF CHIZUK Thought-provoking insights in a light, easily readable format. BY R' AVRAHAM
RECAP OF CHAPTER 27: Naomi sends the precious medicine to Zuska in the infirmary, but she doesn’t tell her mother or grandmother about the sacrifice she undertook to obtain it.
Binyamin is working himself to the bone, trying to do the work of two sick friends in addition to his own work, so that they can still receive their salary.
Bentzy tells Dena that the Russian man, Alexander, had been asking him to give a Mishnayos shiur to their group, but that he thinks his father should take on the responsibility, not he himself.
Dearest Elky!
Embroidered with the loving hand and heart of a shvigger, in honor of your promotion at the office!
Mama (Mottel’s Mother)
Elky rubbed a finger over the small leather bag and the buttons that closed it, and raised shining eyes to Chaya Kush. “Thank you!” she said. “It’s so beautiful!”
“I’m happy you like it,” Mottel’s mother replied with a smile. “I saw a few of the younger women with such handbags in the last two weeks, so I thought it could be a good gift for you.”
“Yes, Katarina has been giving handbags as payment for embroidery and sewing work that she likes. They must have bought stock somewhere, so she can distribute them.”
“Do you like that style better?” her mother-in-law asked, somewhat hesitantly.
“No, this is much more special. It’s wider and more comfortable on the shoulder, and your stitching…” She studied the tiny, perfect, maroon stitching, and the satin flower affixed to the strap. “It’s gorgeous. Thanks so much again! It really makes me happy!”
“Wonderful, wonderful,” her mother-in-law said as she turned toward the door. In the stories that her mother a”h used to tell her about the days before the Reich, a mother-in-law wouldn’t dare pay a visit to her son and daughter-in-law’s home at six in the morning. But for them, this was the ideal time. Elky got the gift just before she was supposed to leave for work, and this way she didn’t have to be pressured to prepare a fancy dinner and scrub the house, like everyone said you had to do before a mother-in-law’s visit. Why prepare a fancy supper only to have to eat it hastily in forty minutes, after work, and then have to disband the party because they weren’t allowed to be outside anymore?
No, Chaya certainly didn’t need a fancy meal or the headaches that would inevitably come along with it. But she definitely was expecting the appropriate gesture that should have followed this morning visit: that her daughter-in-law should walk to work together with her. Two thirds of their route was the same, and also, they would likely meet a number of women on the way, who would see that things were going swimmingly between them.
But Elky did not seem to remember these basic rules of etiquette. She smiled, wished her mother-in-law a “wonderful day,” and closed the door, leaving the other woman outside. Chaya Kush gaped at the door, feeling very foolish.
Since Mottel had told her last week that Elky would be given more responsibilities in the camp office, she had worked
diligently. She’d sewn that beautiful little handbag during unconventional hours, and had envisioned the two of them walking together in the morning, with Elky wearing the new purse. Now, not only would that not happen, but all the women she’d meet, who knew very well that her house was not in this area, and that her daughter-in-law’s house was, would surmise that something was amiss between them this morning.
But everything had gone so well! So—why this uncomfortable situation? Did Elky not like the bag? Would she have preferred to do some side work for the Wangel family and receive a more fashionable piece, like the other young women had gotten?
But Elky had been so warm and sincere just now, and her thanks had seemed genuine and heartfelt. That must not be it.
Chaya stepped behind the only tree that grew in the yard of her son’s little hut. Soon the first women would start passing here on their way to work; she didn’t want to be caught standing here, humiliated.
Suddenly, a new idea popped into her mind, casting Elky in a different light. Maybe Elky had come across a problem of some type that was delaying her at home, and it wasn’t comfortable for her to deal with it next to her motherin-law? To this day, Chaya remembered her own mother-in-law’s first visit to her home. The official purpose of the visit was to give her a birthday present. Her mother-in-law had brought her three huge, gorgeous apples from Spain, which had cost a fortune, but Chaya had gotten up a bit late that morning, and discovered that one of her coat buttons had fallen off. Her mother-in-law’s visit had caught her before she’d had time to find the button and sew it back on. She’d been terribly ashamed to tell her shvigger what an inept daughter-in-law she had—a girl who only looked the next morning for a button that had fallen off the night before. But she’d had no choice. And so her shvigger had sat and watched Chaya crawling around the room, searching desperately for that missing button, until it had been found and duly sewn back on. Finally, they’d set out together.
Today’s youngsters were more afraid to admit to their shortcomings, but on the other hand, they also allowed themselves to defy clear and natural rules. The fact that she was able to admit the mishap to her shvigger didn’t mean that Elky was also able to do that.
Okay, so something—whether a missing button or something else—had happened to throw Elky totally off, and it had banished all thoughts of basic respect for her mother-in-law. Chaya decided that she’d wait a few minutes here outside, while trying to make sure that no one saw her from the main path. When Elky would come out, she’d tell her casually that she realized something was delaying her at home, but that she didn’t want to give up the opportunity to walk with her daughter-in-law, so she’d waited for her outside. And then she’d change the subject, and would never again mention Elky’s rather rude behavior.
A minute, two, three… Chaya waited, all the while envisioning a series of possibilities of what Elky was doing now: what she didn’t want to do in her mother-in-law’s presence. Only when the echo of the footsteps on the path had more or less faded did Chaya realize that if she didn’t set out very soon, she’d be late to work at the sewing shop!
But…Elky would also be late!
What was the tardiness about? Was this her way of showing gratitude after the Wangels had added hours and everything else they had given her?
Chaya didn’t want to think badly of her sweet daughter-in-law, and she certainly didn’t want to say anything about it to Mottel, but she really hoped Elky wasn’t becoming negligent as the result of overconfidence. That was not something the Sherers would take kindly to. But there was a limit as to what she could allow herself to say.
This waiting was also above and beyond what was called for.
Chaya took another deep breath and stepped onto the path, throwing one last glance back at the small house, whose single window was tightly shuttered. She had no idea what Elky was doing now, but at least her wait wasn’t totally useless.
Now the path was empty, and she wouldn’t meet anyone along the way.
With a scowl on her face, she walked away from her son’s house, alone.
What was the role of a woman in her world, on a random, humdrum, winter morning?
Dena had already davened. She’d said the whole “yom” of Tehillim, which her mother had only begun to do when her youngest was eight. She’d even tried to stitch a row and a half on the needlepoint that her mother-in-law had bought her two weeks ago, but then she’d stopped.
Maybe it was Duvi’s recess time now. And maybe he forgot his bag of vegetables at home? Dena felt an urge to go and visit her children in cheder. Just because. For no reason other than the fact that she was sick and tired of being alone with the four walls until five in the afternoon.
Maybe she should go visit her mother-in-law? But the latter might faint if her daughter-in-law just landed in on her one morning, without any advance notice or clear reason for the visit. She walked through the rooms in the house, checking what was clean and what needed cleaning, so that she could tell Lana, the cleaning lady, when she’d come in the afternoon. Then she stepped out onto the porch with her needlepoint.
It was one thing if she’d be an elderly lady, with a full and busy life behind her. Perhaps then, she’d find satisfaction in having such a peaceful day. But under these circumstances, the emptiness in her day really wasn’t something Dena could enjoy or appreciate.
How much longer was Bentzy planning to help out his father? He’d never spoken about a clear return date; the only thing that was clear to her was that their return to Eretz Yisrael in itself was a very murky goal. They had spoken in general about the lifestyle that awaited them here, the boys’ schedule, the things Bentzy would be busy with, and the fact that it would be much easier for her to run a home in Vienna than in Israel.
But she hadn’t thought they were talking about years there. Now she was afraid that she would have to start imagining herself celebrating Duvi’s bar mitzvah here.
Would she sit until then on this porch, doing one stitch in her needlepoint, sighing, looking out, and then repeating it all?
If she’d tell this to any of her sisters, even those who had thought her trip was something to be excited about, they would start
to have pity on her—that much was sure. But how could she tell them? Her letters were too short. Expressing herself in writing had never been her thing, and international calls were prohibitively expensive.
She needed friends who lived here.
During the time they’d stayed at her in-laws, Bentzy’s mother had invited some young women over on Shabbos afternoon so she could get to meet people. But she had felt so different from them, as if she’d never get used to the non-Israeli mentality. Her quiet nature probably also contributed to the fact that no relationship had developed beyond those short encounters. For a while already, her mother-in-law had been trying to persuade her to go to a parshah shiur for young women, given by Rebbetzin Weg. She claimed there were lots of nice young women who attended the shiur with whom she could surely find some common ground. But she preferred to stay home with Duvi and Shloimy.
Maybe this week she should go? They’d been here for more than ten months already; she needed to break the barrier of her shyness at some point. And if there didn’t seem to be a return date on the horizon, then that “some point” would best be very soon.
Dena folded her needlepoint without adding even one stitch, and stuck it back into the flat package it had come in. A friend was a good idea, but it would not fill all her empty hours.
Bentzy had suggested that perhaps she could also work at the factory, and maybe that would give her some fulfillment. She’d stared at him in surprise. The packaging factory? Her? He’d laughed and said he hadn’t meant work scraping machines, but something more office-oriented, like photocopying papers or answering phones.
After the substituting jobs she’d had in the local playgroup back home, and her regular Monday job at the Ohr HaTorah preschool, she couldn’t imagine herself working at the factory. She’d prefer a million times more to tell stories to little children, because then at least she’d feel like she was doing something meaningful.
It would be one thing if she’d need to work in order to help support her family, or if it was a chessed organization; then she’d be happy to do it. But if this work was only to resolve the issue of her boredom, it all seemed so pointless. Just to sit in an industrial office and answer phones? What kind of lofty meaning could such a job possibly have?
40 Years Experience
When was the last time you listened—really listened—to your child excitedly recount an episode at school, a problem with a teacher or a friend, or any of the many trials and triumphs that make up a child’s average day?
True, life is full of pressures. We may be torn in many directions; we may be coping with financial, health or family issues that leave us feeling drained. Nevertheless, if we cannot muster genuine interest when our child pleads for our attention, what message are we giving him?
The message is: I have more important priorities in life than you.
Nine-year-old Ari waits impatiently for his father to come home at the end of the day. The wonderful news is bubbling inside him. With superhuman effort he holds it in check. Tatti must be the first to know.
When at last his father walks through the door, his son runs to him ecstatically. “Tatti! Guess what?!”
But his father barely notices him. A quick nod, perfunctory smile— Tatti’s mind is clearly elsewhere. He drops his briefcase and hat on the table, whips out his cell phone and dials a number.
“Heshy? It’s Dovid. Cancel those last few points we made in the proposal. I have a whole new approach. Tell you about it as soon as I get a bite to eat.”
Ari approaches his father again. “Tatti! You won’t believe it! Guess what happened today? I got picked
But the only response he gets is that little nod again, with the friendly smile, like the mailman receives for bringing the mail. Tatti is in the kitchen, lifting a lid off one of the pots bubbling on the stove, glancing up at Mommy in surprise as she gestures urgently toward Ari, thinking Ari doesn’t notice.
“Oh – sorry! What’s that, Ari? Masmid of the month? Hey, that’s great! Keep it up, tzaddik. --Miriam, when’s supper? I have to meet with Heshy about the Landswirth account but he’s got to leave by 8:00. Think we can be finished by then?”
Ari’s eyes, shining just moments before with the anticipation of Tatti’s pride in his accomplishment, are still shining, but with a strange wetness. And in his mind is a thought that brings a lump to his throat. Being Masmid of the Month, something he’d tried with all his might to achieve, is not really so important after all.

So much of a child’s motivation and incentive to do well in school comes from the desire to make his parents proud of him. Parental indifference can seriously undermine not only his scholastic performance but his conduct in and out of the classroom, his over-all self-image and his trust in adults.
The research overwhelmingly demonstrates that parent

involvement in children's learning improves student achievement. When parents are engaged in working directly with their children on learning activities in the home, the benefits are immediately apparent in the classroom, teachers report.
Programs which involve parents in reading with their children, supporting their work on homework assignments, or tutoring them using materials and instructions provided by teachers, show particularly impressive results.
The research also shows that the earlier in a child's educational process parent involvement begins, the more powerful the effects will be.
In a summary of selected research by the noted organization, The Parent Institute, President Dr. John Wherry shows evidence that students with involved parents are more likely to earn higher grades and test scores, have better social skills, show good behavior and adapt well to school. Ongoing family involvement at home appears to protect children as they progress through school, Wherry writes. “The research evidence is now beyond dispute. When parents work together with teachers to support learning, children tend to succeed not just in school, but throughout life.”
There was a time, not too long ago, when being a good parent was the most valued achievement in
our community. There was a time when mothers and fathers prided themselves more than anything else on raising happy, healthy children who reflected their values.
Today, we pay a great deal of lip service to this concept, but in practice, we allow many other priorities, such as succeeding in our careers, social obligations and selffulfillment, to compete with the one we profess to cherish most.
This subtle shift in attitude is not only a byproduct of changing mores in the secular world that have impacted religious society. It is also a result of heightened financial pressures that force fathers to work too many hours and to be consumed with personal advancement on the job.
The need for a two-parent income is driving mothers out of their traditional “stay-at-home” role in raising their children, propelling them into the work force or back to school to acquire marketable skills and training.
Most would agree that religious society today, affected by current trends in the secular world, tends to relegate stay-at-home mothers to a lowered status. Almost any job performed out of the house claims more respect today than occupying oneself with childcare all day long.
The pitfalls of this development are obvious. Human nature is such that the drive to succeed at one’s job tends to swallow one’s life-—to actually become one’s life. Arriving home after a long day at work, nearly exhausted, how many parents have the energy or clear-headedness to spend quality time with their children? In how many homes is the perfunctory “How was school today?” followed by a spaced-out expression in the parent’s eyes as the child tries to communicate her happiness and woes.
“LATCHKEY KIDS”
It is indeed saddening and sobering
to consider the how truly “missing in action” many mothers and fathers have become when it comes to parenting their children. The “absentee” parent may be physically present but nonetheless, almost wholly inaccessible.
As children get older, parents’ work schedules get even heavier. Often, children are left alone for a few hours each day after school. This is where the term “latchkey kids” originated—children would wear the house key around their neck since no one was at home to unlock the door and greet them when they came home.
“Latchkey kids” are more common in the religious community than we would like to think. Left to their own devices, these children begin to get into things they should not. Without parental supervision, they fall into trouble—they read inappropriate books and magazines and eventually find access to other harmful media.
They may form friendships that bring out negative conduct and lead them in directions that would shock their parents—if only their parents were tuned in sufficiently to be aware of what was going on.
Dangers Posed By Technology
Many experts believe that the need for parental involvement in their children’s lives has increased in direct proportion to the rising pervasiveness of hi-tech telecommunications in our society.
The Daily Telegraph, a British newspaper, in an article titled, “How Technology Rules The Home” describes the effect of technology on parenting today:
“Technology is destroying traditional family life as young adolescents increasingly spend more time in their bedrooms playing computer games, watching videos or communicating with friends via cell phone texting or e-mail… The wealth of technology
means that a significant number of children are not experiencing family life. Parenting has been turned over to computers!
“There are toddlers who can operate a computer better than many adults. Of course, there are certain computer games that may help in a child's education. But the majority of the time spent in front of a screen, watching or playing video games is not educational. Any parent would freely admit this.
“Parents seem to be willing to give up their responsibility to teach their children how to live, how to think and how to become productive, successful adults.”
The above critique was made of secular society, but it can’t be denied that its views reflect trends in our own religious community as well.
Throughout Jewish history, the family unit has been a bulwark of protection and support, enabling its members to survive and prosper even under daunting conditions. Parental involvement in their children’s day-to-day life and education was the bedrock of the family infrastructure that perpetuated Jewish community life, scholarship and education.
In many homes, today, parental involvement in the lives and education of their children is below standard, even among yeshiva or day school parents. It would seem to be common sense that children yearn for and thrive on parental closeness and togetherness. Yet, just when such intimate bonds are so badly needed to offset the breakdown of family values in Western society, we see that positive force in decline.
Reversing that trend and replacing parent “absenteeism” with parental engagement is vital not only for our children’s success in school, but for the broader goal of preparing them to fill their roles as tomorrow’s Jewish mothers and fathers.

The Mitzvah regarding the Parah Adumah (a completely red cow) is called a Chok, a Mitzvah that no one knows the reasoning behind it. A Parah Aduma had to be completely red. Even 2 black hairs, would make it invalid for use in purifying someone.
You went to the doctor for a certain issue that arose, and the doctor prescribed a particular medi- cine for you, to be taken at specific times. You don’t understand how the medicine works – what exactly it accomplishes or how it inter- acts with the mechanisms of your body. But rather than waiting to fully understand the science behind it, you trust that the doctor knows what he is doing and that by taking it, you will become 100% healthy again. We don’t al- ways know why or how something is good for us, but we trust our parents to know better and as we grow older we can understand why.
The same is true with Mitzvahs. Hashem has a very clear reason for each mitzvah that we are instructed to do. Sometimes it’s clear to us and we understand why Hashem wants us to do this specific mitzvah. Other times, like the mitzvah with the Parah Aduma, it doesn’t make any sense, in our eyes. We still do each mitzvah with the same ex- citement and commitment, knowing and trust- ing that Hashem knows what’s best for us.
What is a Mitzvah that you do, even though you don’t understand why?
The Parah Aduma comes to remind us that we need to do mitzvahs simply because they are Hashem’s will, not because they make sense to us.
Pour a small amount of clear glue into a bowl, add two drops of red food coloring and mix.
Add 3 dark hairs to one of the cows with the blue pencil, then cut out stenciled cows.
Stick other side of ribbon onto the cover of the container and place inside the jar.
Paint the entire inside of the container with the glue and let dry for 2-4 hours. Then paint again over any air bubbles that may have opened. Set to dry.
Color over both sides of the picture using your different color markers.
You will see that under the red ‘light’ of the container you can see the cow clearly! Can you spot the Kosher Para Adumah? Enjoy!
Draw a picture of a cow with a blue pencil, then flip the paper and draw an identical cow on the other side of the paper.
Stick the ribbon on one end of the cow making sure its not too long, then laminate the entire cow using tape, cut off excess.
Markers: Red, Orange, Yellow & Dark Pink
