RECAP OF CHAPTER 24: Zuska Neiman, one of Naomi’s students, becomes very sick. She needs antibiotics desperately, and Naomi’s grandmother asks her to fight for Zuska to get it.

Dena tells Bentzy that it’s important to write on their spices containers that the spices must be checked for bugs.

CHAPTER TWENTY FIVE

“It’s too expensive, Chaim,” Naomi said seriously as she glanced at the large clock on the wall, and then turned back to the creased little note. Elky was already at work; she’d only be able to catch her for a few minutes during her lunch break.

“Expensive?”

“Yes. A silver shekel is worth much more than the marks we have here.”

“The flower-seller wrote it,” replied five-year-old Moishele, not quite grasping what she was saying.

“Who, Gittel?”

“Yes,” the boy said. He dashed over to the row of chairs that he had carefully arranged and shouted, “Tram! Tram! Who wants to come?”

“I’m just finishing preparing the medicines for my store!” Dror shouted as he organized empty spools of thread on a shelf. “These are the medicine bottles, and now I’m coming!” He skipped away and took a seat behind the “driver,” and all the three- to five-year-olds followed him. “To the Beis Hamikdash!” Chaim shouted, and with a deafening noise, the children dragged the row of chairs from one end of the classroom to the other.

Naomi turned away and went to prepare herself a cup of tea in the small kitchen. The sleepless nights she’d been having were not doing good things for her throat. She chatted for a few minutes with her grandmother’s friends, and then returned to the classroom, cup in hand. Rivku, the teacher of the other group, was helping Surele cut up some brown paper into money bills, and two girls from her group went out to collect little stones to use as coins. It was amazing what a game could do.

Rivku suddenly appeared at her side. “I just hope they won’t get angry at you for teaching the children Hebrew. They might claim that you are preaching Zionism,” she said. Her words contained no anger or rebuke, and Naomi didn’t ask who “they” were.

“No one here denies that according to the Tanach, Eretz Yisrael belongs to the Jews, and that our original language is Lashon Hakodesh,” Naomi replied, and her eyes looked deep into Rivku’s. “I didn’t incite the children to be bitter, and I didn’t ask to establish a state anywhere… I just illustrated a dream for them. So who is going to accuse me of Zionism?”

“I’m certainly not going to,” Rivku said, smiling. Then she changed the subject. “Surele, your student, is very talented. Did you see

what nice money bills she prepared? She wants to manage the ‘Eretz Yisrael Bank.’”

“Excellent. Let her keep busy, so she won’t think about her friend Zuska the whole time,” Naomi whispered. She finished her tea. “Tell me, Rivku, do you mind if I go out during the lunch break for a few minutes? I need to take care of something urgent. You can leave another day during the break and I’ll stay here with everyone.”

“Okay, sure.”

It was the first time since the preschool was officially divided into two groups that all the children stayed together from davening until lunch. The classroom was cheerful and excited, and Naomi decided not to stop it. Katy was sashaying from corner to corner with the broom, announcing that she was the “cleaner of Yerushalayim.”

Rivku helped Surele turn the desk into a banking station, and Naomi told the two girls in charge of lunch that today they were in charge of the “restaurant for the olim l’regel.”

“And there was room there for everyone!” Dror shouted. “So no pushing, no need to push!”

“Because we are the tzaddikim of Eretz Yisrael,” one of the lunch girls reiterated his message. She pointed toward a six-year-old with messy hair who was pushing her friend toward the table.

And that was when Naomi decided to expand the game beyond the walls of the preschool, to their homes.

At the moment, she didn’t have time to think about the practical details, as she hurried outside, up the path toward the trees and the factory. Time was short, and she had to convey to Elky the importance of the issue.

“Naomi!” her friend greeted her. She was just walking out of the main office. “How are you? How is your husband?”

“Baruch Hashem, he’s slowly starting to recover.”

“Who, the Neiman girl?”

“Yes. According to the doctor, she needs antibiotics urgently, more than all the other patients.”

Elky didn’t reply. They walked into the dining room, and were warmly welcomed by Rochelle Cohen, Elky’s mother. “Did you come to eat, Naomi?” she asked.

Naomi didn’t really know what to say. Why else would someone come to the dining hall at lunchtime if not to eat?

“She’s my guest, Mamme,” Elky replied. “You can write her portion down on my account.”

Naomi blushed and then remembered that she had been registered in the “small kitchen,” with the children and the elderly, and not among the diners in the main dining room. “No, I didn’t come to eat,” she said hastily. “I ate before; it’s fine.”

“I’m so happy to hear that!” Elky flashed her familiar smile, and Naomi remembered the many wonderful hours they’d spent together over the years. “What’s going on? Why aren’t you at the preschool now?”

“My assistant and I are taking turns having a break. Today she stayed with the children.”

“Should we go to the main dining hall?”

“Sounds good. I haven’t been there for months.”

“My mother will be happy to see you,” Elky said. “And I’m happy to see you too, honestly. So, Naomi, tell me, how are things?” There was something in her voice that Naomi could not define. Like a slightly patronizing tone; it was something that Naomi had long detected. It used to be more subtle and delicate, but after Elky had become an office worker, and Naomi the preschool teacher, it had gotten stronger every time they met and talked.

“How are things? Well, I’m very worried about my student.”

“So why did you come?” Elky didn’t try to argue with the rejection of her generous invitation, as she walked with a loaded plate to one of the empty tables. “You came just to talk to me, during your break? That’s so nice of you!” There was a clear note of disbelief in her tone.

Naomi looked around. Her mother wasn’t there; she must have gone back on shift in the sewing room.

Elky sat down at the end of a long, empty table, and Naomi sat down across from her. “Zuska needs antibiotics,” she said without preamble. Elky made a whispered brachah and brought the fork to her mouth. She chewed, set down the fork, swallowed, and looked into Naomi’s eyes. “She has no chance,” she said bluntly. Naomi held her gaze. “I want her to have one.”

“So you want. We want all kinds of things in life.”

“Not many things are as vitally important as this.”

“It’s obvious that you’re very devoted to your children. I mean, the children in the preschool.” Elky raised her fork with a sigh.

“My devotion won’t be worth anything if I can’t help them.”

Elky didn’t reply. She continued eating quietly, her eyes fixed on the table. After a few long moments she asked, “So what do you want from me?”

“Help me get medication for her,” Naomi whispered.

Elky stared at her. “Me?”

“Yes. I know you have connections with this.”

Elky lowered her voice, and Naomi had to strain to hear the words. “What connections? That I work in the office with Eva Sherer? She’s the one with the connection to patients and medicines, not me.”

“My understanding is that you can have some influence as well. You can be persuasive. I don’t know.”

“The truth is that right after Wangel brought the antibiotics to Leo, I spoke to them about your husband. But you said he’s

starting to recover anyway, even without the medicine, right?”

“B’chasdei Shamayim, I really hope so.”

Two other workers arrived and sat down next to them, telling Naomi how happy they were to see her, and that she had to come visit more often. The conversation flowed until Elky bentched, and she and Naomi left.

“I have nothing to do with it,” Elky whispered when they were both outside. “And please, don’t ask me to do things that will get me in trouble.”

“I don’t want to get you in trouble, chalilah. The question is if there is something you can do without getting into trouble.”

“Maybe I can bribe Eva…” Elky’s voice was almost inaudible; only her lips moved. “But for that, you’ll have to give up your wedding gift from the Wangel family.”

“I didn’t get anything from them!”

“You did. Not a lot, like I did, but you did get something. As you know, Katarina likes your mother a lot… She gave instructions to pay you this month five times your regular salary, in honor of your wedding.”

Did she have fever?

Maybe not. Maybe yes.

Dena stood on the open porch, a steaming glass of tea cupped in her two hands, and looked down seven floors. Cars were driving down the dark road. The steam curled up from the glass, blocking her view of the headlights gliding down the street. She saw blurry spots of light melting into the black background, and turning into glowing strips.

“Mommy?” It was Duvi, padding over to her in his socks. Dena took a deep breath. “Yes, Duvi’le?”

“Are you sad?”

“Me? N-no…why?”

“Because you don’t like paprika,” the six-year-old reasoned.

“Me? I like paprika very much, and so do you. You know how you always say that you like the chicken more than the potatoes because the chicken is red? It’s red because of the paprika.”

“So then, Tatty doesn’t like it.” The boy nodded to himself somberly.

“Tatty does like it,” Dena said confidently. “Did you forget what we saw in Zeidy Hanter’s factory?”

“Tons of paprika!” the boy exclaimed. “But…does it have worms in it?”

Dena looked behind her. All she needed was for Bentzy to hear his oldest son talking now. “Zeidy’s paprika is very, very good, and of very high quality.” She was talking fast, the words pouring out of her mouth. “Worms only come if the spices are a bit old, or if they are left open in the cabinet, or—”

“And we never leave open food in the cabinet!” Duvi cried triumphantly. “So we won’t get worms in our spices! But then why…” He scrunched up his mouth, as if remembering an important point that he had to clarify, but Dena decided the time had come to end this sensitive conversation. The sooner, the better.

Recap: Mrs. Kleinberg is upset at Bnos Golda’s PTA taking place just two days before the bail hearing, but resolves to show up and show everyone that she is managing perfectly fine.

In Bnos Golda’s lunchroom, Mrs. Gordon gives the teachers a quick prep talk. Pessy Cooper, who claims not to be nervous, grows slowly more and more nervous as she waits for the first mother to appear. When the first mother actually shows up, she gets a rush of adrenalin and gushes about her student. She meets most of the mothers, and then Nechama Raizel’s mother shows up.

CHAPTER 36

But Nechama Raizel’s mother actually seemed pretty equable.

She smiled inquiringly as Pessy gathered her thoughts and looked down at her paper for support.

“Nechama Raizel has so much energy and so much knowledge!” Pessy said, keeping her smile as wide as she could. “Our fourth grade class would really not be the same without her! I can see that she knows so much from the way she always contributes to the lessons.”

Nechama Raizel’s mother smiled and nodded, much like the other mothers had, but Pessy couldn’t help but note that her eyes were somewhat distant.

“I hope you give her a lot of positive attention for it,”

Nechama Raizel’s mother said, affecting a laugh. “It’s so busy at home, I’m happy if she just stays in her books, but she could really use the positive attention, I know.”

Pessy nodded, feeling a flood of relief that she could say a confident yes to that.

Nechama Raizel’s mother coughed slightly, looking away.

What was making her uncomfortable?

“Look, everyone’s life is busy…Nechama Raizel’s my oldest, I wish I would have more time for her, she loves to talk and talk and talk. But I work full-time and I have a son with special needs…”

Nechama Raizel’s mother let her voice trail off while searching Pessy’s face anxiously. Was there any judgment there?

Pessy tried to keep her facial expression neutral even as she was bowled over that Mrs. Schwartz felt it fit to confide in her.

“Of course, of course. Nechama Raizel gets a lot of positive encouragement for all the participation she does. She’s really a star student, and I make sure she knows it.”

Mrs. Schwartz’s face showed her gratitude at Pessy’s words.

“I’m so happy to hear it,” she said simply. “You don’t know what you’re doing for her. She started off the year, you know, I don’t think she was so happy. She’s very intelligent, like you said, and she really needs to be stimulated.”

Pessy tried not to wince at that sting, remembering the whispered accusations Nechama Raizel had thrown her way throughout the beginning of the school year.

“But now, she comes home so happy from school, and really, it’s such a relief for me, because, like I said, I really don’t have as much time for her as I would want. She’s in school for the whole day, so she needs to be happy there, right?”

Pessy nodded. “Of course. School is the place for her to shine.”

“Thank you so much, Miss Cooper, I’m happy Nechama Raizel has you as her teacher.”

Mrs. Schwartz bestowed a smile on Pessy as she turned to leave, and Pessy returned her first real smile of the day.

She hardly had time to process the encounter, when the next mother sidled up to her table, and Pessy got ready to pour praises on her next student’s head.

As the flow of mothers finally started winding down, Layala appeared at Pessy’s side.

“Nu, so you weren’t nervous, right? How was?” Layala asked teasingly.

Pessy sat down on the chair with a sigh of relief.

“It was…pretty good, actually,” she said, realizing it was true as she said it. During the last two whirlwind hours, she’d been functioning on autopilot. Now as she took the moment to decompress, she felt satisfaction at having successfully made it through.

And all the mothers had seemed happy with her. Which was saying a lot when she remembered what the beginning of her teaching year had looked like.

“No scary mothers?” Layala asked.

“No, really not,” Pessy said. “What about you?”

“I had one mother who told me her daughter wants to switch seats and that her daughter complains that I don’t call on her enough.” Layala shrugged.

“Can’t make everyone happy.”

Pessy inclined her head at the truth of that statement, but felt a thrill of wonder that most of her own students’ mothers had regaled her with compliments instead of the opposite.

As if to confirm her happy thoughts, Mrs. Gordon, who’d just walked into the door of the lunchroom, made her way over to Pessy’s table just then. Layala moved back to her own table to give the two of them privacy.

“I wanted to give you the regards right away,” Mrs. Gordon said, her smile radiating towards Pessy.

“With first-year teachers, I usually have some complaints from the mothers, you know, because it’s a learning curve and it takes time until a teacher is fully confident. But the fourth grade mothers had only rave regards to give me about you, and I was extremely impressed.”

Pessy blushed, not knowing how to respond elegantly.

“I’m really impressed with the positive atmosphere you’ve created and how you make sure that each student gets positive attention.”

“Thank you,” Pessy said simply, and she felt her blush receded into a becoming glow.

Mrs. Gordon moved on to Layala’s table, while Pessy was left with her thoughts.

It had taken a lot of hard work, harder work than she’d ever thought she was capable of, to reach this moment, where it seemed like the world was finally smiling at her.

Her mind perused all the mothers that had stopped at her table that morning. Face after face flit through in her mind, then she stopped. Nechama Raizel’s mother.

She saw the angular, sharp features, the regret, and was it even guilt, that was etched across them.

“I wish I would have more time for her…” she heard Nechama Raizel’s mother’s voice in her head again, and she felt a pang of pity for her student. Of course Nechama Raizel acted up! The poor girl was starving for attention for good reason. If her mother worked full time and was busy with a special needs child on top of that, even a drama queen like Nechama Raizel could have a hard time getting noticed as much as she wanted to.

She wasn’t used to feeling bad for Nechama Raizel, but after meeting her mother, the pieces of the puzzle that had clicked into place painted a picture that could only invite sympathy.

Thinking of her own mother, Pessy remembered all the years that her mother had been patiently waiting for her arrival home from school, usually with something freshly baked for her to nibble on. She felt a wave of nostalgia for those afternoons she’d spent as an eight-year-old at the dinette table, regaling her mother with stories from her school experiences.

When was the last time she’d shared like that with her mother?

Her mother always made sure to have time for her, but Pessy, busy social butterfly that she was, hardly stopped to make time for her mother.

The thought was fleeting, and it probably would have stayed that way in Pessy’s brain, except that as she stuck her hand in her briefcase to take out her phone, her hand hit something unexpected. She pulled it out.

It was a plastic container with a cinnamon-cheese Danish, and it had a little pink Post-it note stuck on the front.

Mommy?!

It would have been completely incongruous if not for the thoughts that had been filling Pessy’s mind just moments before.

Mrs. Cooper always did her errands on Sunday, for as long as she could remember. This Sunday was no different.

She marched down the avenue with purposeful intent, stopping in the hosiery store for a couple of socks her baby needed, then moving on to buy some school supplies another one of her children had requested.

But as she methodically worked through her errands, her mind was on Pessy, her oldest daughter. Had it been hasty and ridiculous to buy her daughter

a Danish from her favorite bakery? It was just the kind of thing that Pessy and her friends did for each other, leaving little reminders that they were rooting for each other. But maybe it was totally not the type for her, as Pessy’s mother, to crash that party?

She began regretting the moment when she’d hatched her plan.

She’d only wanted to show Pessy that she was also excited about the PTA, and that she was there for her on her big day. But had she gone about it completely wrong?

If she knew Pessy well enough, Pessy would come home, talking on the phone to yet another one of her friends, regaling them with all the juicy tales of her PTA morning. And then, upon catching sight of her mother in the kitchen, she’d put her conversation on pause long enough to throw a cheery, “Thanks so much for the Danish, Ma, it was delicious!” her way.

And then Pessy would go right back to talking to her friends, while Mrs. Cooper tried to decide whether or not to listen in.

The thought filled Mrs. Cooper with an unaccustomed bleakness.

How many years had she spent her Sundays going shopping for Pessy, until Pessy had started going with her friends? How many hours had she spent waiting on line for Pessy’s teachers at Pessy’s own PTAs as a student? How many days had she sacrificed things she wanted to do with her own friends because Pessy needed her home when she was little?

It wasn’t that she was looking for payback. But maybe, with a little sweet reminder in Pessy’s black teaching bag, she could remind her daughter about someone who was always rooting for her?

She checked her watch. PTA should be winding down just about now.

When Casey returned to the cell, his thunderous features sent Mr. Kleinberg cowering into a corner.

“Those – those creatures!” Casey said, and that was only the beginning of the tirade. From Casey’s furious grumblings, Mr. Kleinberg realized that Casey’s friends had refused to cooperate with his revenge plans.

“I’ll get back at him anyway, you’ll see!” Casey said, the rage in his voice all the more ominous because he was forced to keep his voice down, so that the guards wouldn’t hear him.

Mr. Kleinberg tried to become invisible. As the only person around, it would be too easy for Casey to take out his fury on him.

But eventually, Casey subsided and went to lay down on the cement block that was his bed. He closed his eyes, and Mr. Kleinberg resumed breathing.

He’d been reviewing Mishnayos that he knew by heart, with his eyes closed, but now he kept his eyes open. He cast wary sidelong glances at Casey as he tried to continue where he’d left off before Casey had been brought back to their shared cell.

“What are you whispering about?!” Casey suddenly yelled, and Mr. Kleinberg jumped, his heart slamming against his ribs. He’d thought Casey’s eyes were closed.

“Umm,” Mr. Kleinberg stuttered. “Well, it’s – I’m saying Mishnayos,” he finally said, though he figured that Mishnayos would be far above Casey’s pay grade, even if he’d known what kashrus was.

“Oh,” Casey said. He sat up and looked Mr. Kleinberg up and down carefully.

“You’re a Rabbi?”

“No,” Mr. Kleinberg said.

“So how do you know that stuff?”

“Every Jew is supposed to learn the Torah, and Mishnayos are part of the Torah.”

Casey snorted.

Mr. Kleinberg regretted having said anything. Hadn’t he just seen how enraged Casey could get? But Casey would probably get even angrier if he just stayed silent and didn’t respond.

“I’m also Jewish. Are you trying to say that I’m supposed to be learning that stuff?”

Mr. Kleinberg looked at Casey. His features were enough identifiably Jewish that his claim made sense.

“Well, that’s what Judaism says,” Mr. Kleinberg said, trying to answer as delicately as possible.

“So – teach me!” Casey said, shocking both of them.

Without further ado, we present to you: Flatburgers! The meat and bun might be flat, but the taste is anything but. These are bursting with delicious flavor!

Ingredients:

½ lb. ground beef

1 pack 6-inch wraps salt and pepper, to taste

1 tomato, purple onion, avocado, sliced

2 jalapenos, sliced spicy mayo cilantro, for garnish

Directions:

1. Heat a small frying pan, or a Betty Crocker (for best results).

2. Take 1 wrap at a time, spread a thin layer of ground beef on one side, season with salt and pepper.

3. Place into the pan (or Betty Crocker) beefside down, and cook for 3 minutes, flip, and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes until slightly crispy.

4. Immediately fold in half, and load with vegetables, and the spicy mayo.

Enjoy!

KOREAN LETTUCE WRAPS

A delicious and healthy option for those who want to enjoy Korean BBQ, but without the guilt of excessive calories.

Ingredients:

1 lb. ground beef

1 Tbsp oil

½ cup fresh mushrooms, chopped

1 cube frozen ginger

4 cubes frozen garlic salt and pepper, to taste romaine lettuce, washed and checked well julienned carrots, and beets for garnish

Sauce:

¼ cup hoisin sauce

2 Tbsp honey

1 Tbsp brown sugar

3 Tbsp soy sauce

1 tsp sesame oil

2 tsp vinegar

Directions:

1. In a small bowl, mix all sauce ingredients, and set aside.

2. Heat oil in a pan, add in the beef, and season with salt and pepper, cook until browned. Add in the mushrooms and ginger and cook for an additional 3 minutes. Add in the garlic and cook for an additional minute. Add in the sauce, and mix well, and cook for 2-3 more minutes.

3. Place the lettuce on a platter, fill each lettuce with beef, and garnish with the julienned vegetables.

Enjoy!

MOROCCAN CIGARS

Exotic, spicy, and oh-so delicious. These cigars have turned into a favorite for a reason. Easy to prepare, and perfect for a springtime dinner.

Ingredients:

1 lb. ground beef

1 pack spring roll wraps

1 Tbsp olive oil

4 cubes sauteed onions

4 Tbsp osem falafel mix

2 tsp salt

Tahini for dipping

Oil, for deep frying

Directions:

1. In a bowl, mix all ingredients.

2. Take 1 heaping tablespoon at a time from the beef mixture, roll it into a rope, place it at the edge of a spring roll wrapper, and roll it into a cigar, wetting the edges so it remains closed.

3. Heat the oil in a deep frying pan on medium heat, fry each cigar for 2-3 minutes on each side, until golden.

AStaying hydrated means keeping enough water in your body. Water is super important because it helps everything in your body work well. It helps you stay cool, keeps your skin soft, helps you think clearly, and even makes sure your heart and muscles work right. You need water all year, but it's even more important in the summer. Why is hydration even more important in the summer?

In the summer, it's hotter outside, and you sweat more. Sweat helps cool your body down, but you lose water when you sweat. If you don’t drink enough water to replace what you lose, you can get dehydrated quickly. Dehydration means your body doesn’t have enough water to do its job, and that can make you feel really bad.

Dehydration can happen easily, especially if:

You’re playing outside a lot: Running around makes you sweat more.

You forget to drink water: When you're having fun, you might forget to drink.

You’re sick: If you have a fever, you're sweating more, and if you're vomiting or have diarrhea, you're losing water.

You’re not eating and drinking the right things: Some foods and drinks can make you lose water faster.

If you don’t stay hydrated, you can start to feel very sick.

Some dangers of not drinking enough water are:

Headaches: Dehydration can cause bad headaches.

If you are going to camp, get yourself a 32-ounce Contigo water bottle with a straw. Sip throughout the day and watch the ounces going down. I find that this helps tremendously.

2. Eat Water-Rich Foods: Foods like watermelon, cucumbers, oranges, and strawberries have a lot of water in them. These can help you stay hydrated.

3. Avoid Sugary Drinks: Drinks like soda and juice have a lot of sugar, which can make you lose more water. Try to drink more water or natural fruit juices occasionally only.

4. Drink Before You’re Thirsty: Don’t wait until you feel thirsty to drink water. If you’re thirsty, you’re already a little dehydrated.

5. Take Water Breaks When Playing: If you’re playing outside, make sure to take regular breaks to drink water, especially when it’s hot.

Just like plants need water to grow, you too, need water to stay healthy and strong. This is not for kids and teens only, but for adults as well. Remember: When one feels thirsty, they are already possibly dehydrated. Drink before you have a chance to feel thirsty. Have a fun and safe summer!

Just like the Menorah’s light was spread into the whole world, we too can spread our light everywhere around us.

When you walk into a house, what do you see? Ceiling, walls doors, windows, all these make up the interior of a house. The windows are probably built in a way that the light from outside shines inside the house. In the times of the Beis Hamikdash it was common to build windows this way, so as to bring as much light in, as possible. However, the windows of the Beis Hamikdash were built in the opposite way. Why?

How can you spread your light using your talents?

The Beis Hamikdash was filled with lanterns and lights, it didn’t need more light. So why was the Menorah lit? Obviously not to spread light into the Beis Hamikdash itself but rather to spread light out to the whole world. We can see this based on how the windows were built. The windows of the Beis Hamikdash were built in a way to shine the light of the Menorah outside to the world, not to bring the outside light in. We can learn a very special lesson from this. Each of us has a special light inside. This light is unique and can manifest itself in our talents and strengths. It’s our special job to be like the Menorah and shine our light to everyone around us. When each of us shines our light, the world will become a beautiful and brighter place.

Impressionistic Menorah PARSHA

To make the background, paint in a criss-cross style. Start with painting your main color on canvas, the purple.

Dip your Q-tip into the orange paint, place on the bottom of one of the dots and flick upwards, creating the look of a flame. Repeat for each flame.

Sprinkle glitter on the top half of your canvas to be the light emanating from the flames.

Add and blend the complimenting colors (gray, brown & yellow) using the criss-cross technique, until you have a finished background.

Take a medium paintbrush, and paint one stroke of gold from the middle flame downwards about two inches long.

Enjoy your impressionistic Menorah!

Dip your finger into the gold paint, dot the middle of the canvas, add one dot at a time until there are 7 dots.

Paint a shorter diagonal stroke for each of the other flames towards the center, without touching the other branches.

Dr. Scott Chudnoff spent time reflecting on his time as Chair of Obstetrics and Gynecology (OB/GYN) at MMC.

As someone who spent his career focused on direct patient care, Dr. Scott Chudnoff’s transition to running OB/ GYN departments came from advice given by friends: make change or be okay with how things are. Clearly okay was not good enough. Dr. Chudnoff realized how impactful organizational decisions were in determining patient care and wellbeing.

With decades of experience in the field, Dr. Chudnoff assumed the role as chair three years ago, and since has helped develop and expand the services provided at Maimonides Health. His goal for OB/GYN - treating women’s health in a comprehensive and individualized manner – may not seem as unique as it is. Dr. Chudnoff is taking on this challenge every day to make health care better for women across Brooklyn.

Maimonides Health is home to one of the most comprehensive approaches to women’s health and obstetrics and gynecological services for all women, from adolescence to menopausal years. The OB/GYN center at Maimonides specializes in maternal-fetal medicine, gynecological imaging and diagnostic services, and other services such as family planning and post-natal care.

Often, women are treated by their symptoms, which can often be masked, causing physicians to miss underlying issues, especially for those patients visiting specialists in succession, rather than the team approach. Under the leadership of Dr. Chudnoff, that has changed.

Dr. Chudnoff said, “we can walk a patient to the specialty they need to see, because we know that warm handoffs have a much greater likelihood of fulfilling a subsequent appointment than when someone is just given a referral.”

Last year, Chudnoff recalls a case where a woman’s back pain was treated, but with later scans and testing, ovarian cancer was discovered. At a visit with

her doctor that the patient’s sister happened to join, the doctor asked if either had been genetically tested for a gene mutation that causes a higher risk of diagnosed cancer. Neither had. The sister was walked over that afternoon to the genetics lab (rather than schedule and wait for an appointment), got tested, and was found to be a carrier of the mutation. She was subsequently found to have an early stage of the same cancer.

This type of care has developed through coordinated efforts and dedication among departments, something Dr. Chudnoff is proud of. “Each department looks at symptoms through their own specialty lens,” he said.

When seen through a comprehensive lens, it was clear that she was not just a patient with back pain, but rather a patient who needed further evaluation. With a comprehensive approach, he expects that more patients will receive, not only better treatment, but feel comfort in knowing their health is being reviewed at a macro level.

These approaches have also shifted how the OB/GYN team runs its neonatal ward. Always running 24 hours a day, the neonatal ward has two full time physicians on staff for a full 24 hours. While it is typical to have a physician on call for the late hours, Dr. Chudnoff reiterates the importance of having care teams to support newborns around the clock. “Having physicians support the neonatal care team outside of what you’d consider standard hours, has helped provide peace of mind for new parents, while having extra resources for consults and medical guidance.” Each year, over 6,500 babies are born at Maimonides. Training in cultural and religious understanding supports another care goal for the department. “We’re proud to serve a culturally diverse community at Maimonides and continue to support trainings and tactics that help

care providers understand different cultural sensitivities and religious laws,” he added. “Maimonides’ deep relationships with local Rabbis has made us intimately aware and respectful of family purity laws and other issues that are so important to the Orthodox communities we serve.”

To make a provider visit more comfortable and accessible, Dr. Chudnoff has helped foster new initiatives, which include finding hospitals gowns that provide more coverage, and lockers for storage if needed during Shabbos. Unlike most New York hospitals, Maimonides is rare in its running of a full kosher kitchen.

“For me, coming back to Brooklyn is coming home; especially to Maimonides, the hospital where I was born,” said Dr. Chudnoff. “Every day we continue to make strides in our goal of making women’s healthcare more comprehensive and accessible.”

Prior to joining Maimonides, Dr. Chudnoff was the Chair of the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology at Stamford Health in Stamford, Conn. Previously, he served as the Director of Gynecology at Montefiore Medical Center and is also a clinical professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Columbia University Irving College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City. Dr. Chudnoff is a Brooklyn native and received his BA in Biology at Yeshiva University, his MD in Medicine at Rutgers Medical School and his Master of Clinical Science at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He completed his residency and fellowship in Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery at Montefiore Medical Center.
