Katarina tells her husband, Josef, that they must get more antibiotics if they want their business to remain open, since so many of their workers have fallen ill. He responds that since it’s all illegal—getting medications without prescriptions—it’s not a simple matter

CHAPTER TWENTY ONE

“You’re not going in.” Babbe sounded a bit muffled due to the white fabric covering she wore on her face. She stood at the doorway, with her hands resting on the doorposts to the infirmary hut. “There, another reason to be happy that your husband is also my grandson. I’m taking care of him as best as possible, Naomi’le. It’s not a place for you. Go home.”

“I brought him soup, Babbe.”

“I also did, it’s fine.”

“And he ate it?”

“He will eat it, b’ezras Hashem. I’ll make sure of it.”

“But he’s been like this for four days already!”

“I hope that very soon, b’ezras Hashem, he’ll feel better.”

“But Babbe, what is this disease that he has?”

“Dr. Katzburg says it’s very severe flu that sometimes also attacks the lungs and causes infection. That’s likely what the Elkovitz baby has also.”

“Oy.” Naomi’s voice trembled.

“It’s really going around. We have had twenty-three flu patients in the past two weeks. Seven of those patients contracted pneumonia too. I think that’s what happened to Aryeh.”

“Is Aryeh…is he breathing okay?”

“He’s breathing fine, Naomi. Now go back to the preschool. The children are waiting for you, right?”

“I can’t.” She shook her head. “I’m afraid that something bad will happen to him.”

“So go and collect some zechusim for him.” Babbe put a hand on her shoulder and almost pushed her backward. “Go to school, darling—you’ll see that Hashem will help.”

Naomi averted her gaze. “Okay, so I guess I’ll see you later…” she whispered. “Besuros tovos.”

She hurried on the path to the preschool building, and saw Chani, her aunt and mother-in-law, running toward her. “Naomi!” Chani was breathless. “What’s going on? How does he feel?”

Chani was pale. “And what about Naomi shrugged. She had forgotten that there was such a thing, so she hadn’t even asked her grandmother. But Chani wasn’t waiting for her answer anyway;

Naomi stopped and turned around. Chani was talking to Babbe at the doorway to the infirmary. It looked like Babbe wasn’t letting her in either. They spoke heatedly for a few moments, before Babbe finally moved aside a bit, and Chani stuck her head in, craning her neck as far as she could. Then, with a wave, Chani parted from her mother and walked back down the path toward the manor

“Did you see him?” Naomi asked when Chani caught up to her.

“No.” Chani bit her lip.

“I hope that you are minimizing your value,” Naomi said. It wasn’t something that would have been appropriate to say to a new mother-in-law, if she had not been her aunt as well.

“I hope so too. I hope even more,” the corners of her mouth turned up with effort, “that they’ll just bring enough for everyone. Then all this tension and pressure won’t be necessary, and with Hashem’s help, everyone will get well.”

“Amen. But tell me, if the grandmother of the patient works at the infirmary, isn’t that a bit of protektsia?” Naomi knew she was badgering like the little kids in the kindergarten did.

” The worried mother’s voice shook.

“Pneumonia is not child’s play, even for someone healthy.”

“Each bed is separated with fabric partitions. But Wangel promised that he would bring antibiotic doses this evening. The question is…”

“What’s the question?”

“If he will bring enough.”

“And if not?” Naomi hated herself for the question, but she had to ask it.

“They will have to see for whom it is most…urgent.” She paused. “Or who has the most protektsia.”

“Someone whose mother works in their kitchen for years already should have protektsia—I would think!”

“I don’t know how much importance they attribute to me,” Chani responded quietly. “I have more chances to plead with them, because I work alongside their family, but I’m not sure that it will help. They like the food I cook, but it’s not a key position that’s very significant in our camp.”

“Babbe? Are you serious? She’d never get involved to obtain medicine for her grandson if she thought that someone else needed it more, and that the dose was being stolen from that person.”

“But why would someone need it more?”

“Because Aryeh is a strong boy.” Chani bit her lip. “So they might decide to give the antibiotics to the weaker patients, and let Aryeh’s body fight the illness on its own.

But I…I’m afraid, Naomi.” The worried mother’s voice shook. “Pneumonia is not child’s play, even for someone healthy.”

They walked in silence until they reached the preschool. “Daven hard with them, Naomi,” Chani said, her eyes looking off somewhere in the distance. “Daven well.”

“Yes,” Naomi whispered.

“This is for your granddaughter, Sherer,” Herr Wangel said, putting a white plastic bag, with a small logo in the corner, on the desk. “Her antibiotics. The infirmary should have syringes and all that. So let’s go, let them start giving her what she needs.” There was a trace of fake warmth in his voice.

“Thank you, Herr Wangel,” Leo Sherer said.

“And this,” Wangel placed another bag on the desk, “is what we were able to get for the other patients. But it’s not intravenous—it’s oral medicine. There are Amoxicillin tablets here, and based on the instructions I received, they need to be taken three times a day for at least a week. So see how much there is and who you should be giving all this out to.” He looked pointedly at Sherer, who stood motionlessly, and added, “And take into account that I’m not taking the risk of obtaining more antibiotics for you. So I suggest you use what I’m giving you now very wisely, and do everything in your power to stop this whole story.”

“Certainly, Herr Wangel,” Sherer agreed. After the Nazi left, he hurried to open the bag. There were three packages; each one said it had twenty tablets. What were sixty tablets for seven patients? It wouldn’t even be enough for three days for each of them, certainly not a week. And who knew what was coming in the days ahead?

He sighed and left his office with the medication for Suzy’s little one. “Mrs. Kush,” he said politely to the secretary sitting outside his office with the account books, “please bring this as fast as possible to the infirmary, with a message that it is for my granddaughter.” Elky stood up quickly.

Just then, Eva Sherer appeared, as if out of nowhere. “Where is the rest of the antibiotics, Father?” she asked.

“In my office.”

Eva turned to Elky. “So please tell the infirmary that a small amount of antibiotics has arrived, and that they should prepare a list of those who need it the most. Alright?”

“Okay,” Elky said, thinking about her poor friend Naomi. It was only a week since Naomi’s wedding, and her husband was in the infirmary in pretty serious condition. She took the bag, hesitated, and then blurted out, “I have a friend whose husband is very sick. Naomi Klein. Née Schvirtz.”

Eva and her father exchanged glances. “Let them make the list of patients in the infirmary,” Eva said, after a long moment of silence. “That’s the first step. Before

that, there’s nothing to talk about.” ***

A long moment of silence passed before the secretary raised her eyes to Dena. “Something strange?” she asked, again sounding distant and cool. “What is it?”

“Look!” Dina pointed to the shiny packaging paper. “What is this? The factory here doesn’t have a kashrus certification?”

“No kashrus?” The secretary was nearly offended at first, before realizing, a moment later, how absurd it sounded, and she began to laugh. “Are you asking me if your family’s factory has a kashrus certification?!”

“I know it’s kosher.” Dena fumbled for a moment. “But why isn’t there a kosher symbol on the package?”

“Oh, that…” The secretary’s laugh was replaced with a sigh. “I forgot that you come from Israel. There’s a lot of antiSemitism here, and there are people who don’t want to buy products made by Jews. So one of the ways to get around this issue is not to put the kashrus certification symbol on the package.”

“So this way, the non-Jews don’t know that Jews produced it—okay, I can hear that. But then the Jews won’t buy the spices! I mean frum Jews.”

“They buy the spices, of course they do,” the secretary reassured her. “There’s a list of kosher factories in Europe, and the Jews know that they can use the products made in those factories. It’s really fine—you don’t have to worry about it.”

Dena smiled and nodded, and then Bentzy finally emerged from the conference room. He apologized for the delay and said something about how much pressure he was under and how busy he was today, and that he hoped his lateness wouldn’t mean they had missed their appointment at the clinic.

“It will be fine, b’ezras Hashem,” Dena replied. She was distracted, although she couldn’t put her finger on what was bothering her. It apparently had to do with the spices packaging. Okay, she understood why it was strange to her. Then why was she still so disturbed about it?

This year there is a New Curriculum called Next Generation Learning Standards. Common Core Standards are no longer being used for Algebra 1. If you are studying from old regents, it is not enough! My guess is that 10-20% of the regent will include new information that wasn’t asked on the common core regents. There is also material that was removed from the curriculum — Don’t study extra!!! Note. there is a new reference sheet — make sure you know how to use all the formulas on it!

Boro Park Center Lag Baomer Event

Lag Baomer at the Boro Park Center is already a well-known special event. Every year the BPC residents and their family members get a full day of festivities in honor of Lag Baomer, and this year was no exception.

The Berko brothers entertained the crowd of close to 200 residents and family members with lively singing and dancing. Fire jugglers, Tantzers volunteers and other entertainers delighted

the crowd with their energy and tricks.

Rabbi Waijsfeld shared words of chizuk and said that in R’ Shimon’s zchus, everyone at BPC will iy’H get a refuah and see yeshuos, which was answered with hearty ameins from the crowd.

The beautiful weather was the cherry on top, and gave all BPC residents and their families a chance to bond and spend an enjoyable day together.

WHITE CHOCOLATE CHEESE CANNOLIS

Ingredients:

3 packages store bought cannolis

2 8 oz containers cream cheese

2 3.5 oz bars dairy white chocolate, melted

1 cup confectioners’ sugar

3/4 cup heavy cream

Dairy caramel, for topping

Melted white chocolate, for topping

Crushed chocolate chunks, for topping

Directions:

1. Beat cream cheese until smooth. Add melted chocolate and confectioners’ sugar. Beat until smooth.

2. In a separate bowl, whip heavy cream until stiff peaks form. Add to cream cheese mixture and fold until combined.

3. Fill a piping bag, fitted with any tip, with your mixture. Pipe a generous amount into each shell. Place on a sheet pan.

4. Repeat until done. Drizzle with caramel and melted chocolate and place chocolate chunks on while wet.

5. Freeze or refrigerate.

STRAWBERRY SHORTCAKE

CHEESECAKE

The classic cheesecake gets elevated in this delicious recipe. Simple cheesecake with not-your-typical topping makes for a perfect Yom Tov treat. It’s different without completely leaving home base and something your taste buds and family will thank you for.

Ingredients:

1/2 bar melted white chocolate

1 Tbsp oil

1 sleeve graham crackers, crushed

3 8 oz cream cheese

3 eggs

1 tsp vanilla extract

1 Tbsp vanilla sugar

1 cup+ 3 Tbsp sugar

Strawberry Sauce:

2 heaping cups frozen strawberries, cut in half

1/2 cup sugar

1/4 cup lemon juice

Whipped cream, for topping

Frozen/Fresh Berries, for topping

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 300°. Line a 9-inch springform pan with parchment paper.

2. In a small bowl, combine melted chocolate and oil. Add graham crackers and mix well to combine. Pour into prepared pan and bake for 8 minutes.

3. Meanwhile, prep your cheesecake batter.

4. Combine cream cheese, eggs, vanilla extract and sugars. Beat until very smooth.

5. Pour batter into springform pan. Place a pan full with water on the bottom rack in the oven. Put the cheesecake on top and bake for 1 hour and 15 minutes. Close the oven and keep cheesecake inside for an additional hour. Refrigerate fully before topping.

6. For the sauce: In a medium saucepan, over medium low heat, add your strawberries, sugar and lemon juice. Let cook for 45 minutes to an hour until consistency is syrupy.

7. Spread strawberry sauce over cooled cheesecake and top with whipped cream and berries.

FLAKY CHEESE PINWHEELS

These cheese pinwheels are perfect to throw together quickly. Store bought dough makes for easy prep and it tastes so delicious. You can top this with streusel crumbs, but I just opted for a dusting of sugar.

Ingredients:

2 Mechel’s puff pastry sheets, rolled thinly

8 oz cream cheese

1 egg

1/4 cup sugar

1/2 tsp vanilla extract

3 tsp lemon juice

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 350°.

2. In a medium bowl, combine cream cheese, egg, sugar, vanilla extract and lemon juice. Beat until smooth.

3. Spread evenly over rolled out pastry sheets.

4. Roll up jelly roll style and slice into thin slices. Place onto baking sheet and spoon extra filling over the top.

Recap: While Pessy’s mother listens in, Pessy Cooper updates her friend on the phone about the progress on her teaching job and her upcoming PTA.

Josh Lugoff and Tim Brett discuss how much Tim will pay for the data Josh has collected through the malicious Finance2, with Josh telling Tim that he wants enough to continue where he left off.

Bruchi mopes in her room about her miserable life, especially the social aspect. She decides to eat Oreos for supper just as her mother walks in and tells her that the lawyers plan on telling the judge to let Mr. Kleinberg out on bail because of how much his kids need him. Bruchi erupts in a rage, telling her mother that she doesn’t want to be a nebach case and that her father should stay in jail.

Perry walks in, and asks if her mother spoke to her father. Mrs. Kleinberg repeats the conversation she had with her husband in the morning, and Perry asks if her mother thinks they’ll have bail. Bruchi bursts out again that she’d rather her father stay in jail, which horrifies Perry.

CHAPTER 33

“As if you even know what it means to be in jail,” Perry shot back, wounded and stung. “You know what kind of criminals there are in jail? You know that Tatty hardly has kosher food? You think you’re miserable just because your friends won’t talk to you? That is so immature.”

“So not,” Bruchi said lamely. It was obvious that Perry’s mention of criminals shook her up a little.

Mrs. Kleinberg watched her daughters fight in a kind of fascination. They hardly ever argued, because they didn’t have too much interaction with each other altogether, being so different.

“You know that pidyon shvuyim is one of the biggest

mitzvos,” Perry added patronizingly.

“Whatever,” Bruchi said. She looked at her mother. “Ma, I’m going to my room. Can you call me when supper comes? I’m starved.”

Her mother nodded, and Bruchi ran upstairs with her bag of Oreos, back to the room that had been holding all her misery far more patiently than her mother or sister would.

For all its inanimateness, it was her best confidante today. She plopped down on the rug, slightly out of breath, and opened the bag of Oreos once again. She nibbled at a cookie, while absently stroking the plushness of her rug.

Unconsciously, her mind focused on the rug strokes. You’re so soft, rug, she thought absently. You would never be able to understand how hard my life is, right?

But the forgiving nature of the rug’s fabric felt like it did. Like it was reassuring her. That’s when Bruchi broke down and let the tears start trickling from the corners of her eyes. Her quiet sobs made her chest heave, and she let herself cry and cry, releasing all the pain that was behind her fit of anger.

What did Perry think, that she didn’t care about her own father? Of course she did. Her world had completely lost its footing ever since his arrest. She wanted him home so badly that she couldn’t start admitting to it, or she’d drown.

Even now, as she let all the terrible fear and sadness out in a rush of tears, she didn’t let herself lose control completely, so she wouldn’t become lost in it.

When her mother called up through the intercom that the takeout delivery had arrived, Bruchi’s sobs had already quieted down. By the time she arrived at the supper table, Bruchi was on a more even keel again. She ignored the way Perry looked at her like she was some kind of monster, and neatly served herself

So Perry thought she was awful, not realizing that it wasn’t badness, just sadness. Bruchi didn’t understand herself the difference, so she surely couldn’t enlighten her sister.

All she knew was that the torn up feeling she had inside was nothing like anything she’d ever felt in her life.

“The most ridiculous thing ever,” Mrs. Gordon expostulated as she put down her husband’s china plate with an uncharacteristic thump.

Nachman’s eyebrows quirked upward, and his lips tugged. It was a tad comical to watch his unfluster – able wife be so worked up in a tizzy.

“What happened, exactly?” Nachman asked.

“I’m in middle of trying to get bedtime done and Devoiry is refusing to get into pajamas, Perela wants help with her homework. And then this ridiculous tutor calls about a very important modified test! Like that’s all I need to be busy with.”

“And Chayala was out working on her class president, right?” Nachman said, as he picked up his fork and stabbed a green bean.

“Yes, but that doesn’t even matter, because there’s no reason she had to disturb the principal for this type of reason. That’s like, not acceptable.”

Nachman let his grin pop out.

“What?” his wife said irritably.

“You are such a principal. Who else would say that something is ‘not acceptable?’”

Despite herself, a half-grin appeared on Mrs. Gordon’s face.

“I’ll never get away from it, huh,” she asked, the fight leaking out of her tone.

“Nah, I don’t think you really want to get away from it.” Nachman said flippantly.

“What do you mean?”

“As much as you don’t like these annoying calls, you know you’re a principal through and through. Look at this other job you’re thinking about. It’s basically doing exactly what you’re doing now, except there, it’s the official job description – make sure everyone makes each other happy.”

Confusion, uncertainty, and bemused agreement flitted over Mrs. Gordon’s face.

“Yeah, it’s true,” she said. “It makes

my blood buzz when I can take this impossible situation and iron everything out so that everyone’s happy again – teachers, students, even the tutors,” she smiled.

Then her eyes narrowed a little. “By the way, is that your way of telling me what you think I should do about jobs?”

“Maybe,” Nachman Gordon said.

That deflated his wife somewhat.

“Did I tell you about the salary Devorah mentioned?” she asked.

Nachman nodded.

“You don’t think that it’s a worthwhile offer?”

Nachman concentrated on his green beans and didn’t answer.

Mrs. Gordon pulled out a chair and sat down, leaning her chin on her palms.

“I feel like you’re trying not to tell me something,” she said.

That made Nachman look up, and turn up a hand wryly. “Well, I guess that’s true.”

“Why?”

“I think that it has to be your decision on what to do about this job, your current job, or any other job offer that might come up. You’re the one who would have to stick out whatever job you choose, day in and day out. You’re the one who would deal with the situation whatever the decision is. So how can I give you my opinion?”

She stared.

“So you’re not going to even tell me what you think?”

He shook his head.

“At least tell me what you meant before, about how I’m always going to be a principal.”

He smiled. “I mean that before you became a principal, you had a lot of drive. You wanted to make the whole world happy. Then you discovered that it sometimes comes at the expense of some of your sanity, which is why you decided to leave the job. But honestly, you’re being pulled to the same kind of job, for the same reason you wanted to be a principal – because of that drive you have to make everyone happy.”

“And here I thought I became a principal to build worlds and futures.”

“That also. And that’s something that you would be sorely missing in this new job. Look at how much that idealism even rubbed off onto Chayala!” He smiled at the thought of their daughter’s crusade to get her

mother to keep her job.

“So you don’t think I should take this job from Devorah.”

“I’m not telling you what to do. It’s your decision.”

“Yes, but I want to hear what you think, and then I’ll decide. So you’re saying you don’t like the idea of this job. Why?”

“I don’t know exactly, but somehow, I can picture you getting bored of this job after two months of doing it. You’re so fueled by your passion for being a principal, no matter how crazy or ridiculous it gets. What about when this new job becomes crazy and ridiculous, or just annoying for any reason? If you don’t have that passion to keep you going, then what’s going to keep you at this job when the inevitable roadblocks come?”

He let a beat pass, then said, “And I don’t think the salary is going to do it. Money is nice, but it isn’t what motivates you.”

Mrs. Gordon was listening, hard.

“But hey, don’t forget, I said I’m not telling you what to do!”

She cracked a smile. “Got it, I’m not going to blame anything on you, don’t worry.”

Reassured, her husband looked back at his plate and speared one last green bean.

“How come you didn’t say this when I originally decided to look for a different job?”

“I didn’t want to say it now either, remember?”

“Right.” She lapsed into silence. Nachman cleared his plate and fork and stood up from the table.

“I’m also realizing this more after this job from Devorah. I don’t know if I knew it as clearly before, but now I’m just noticing more and more how much you’re made to be a principal.”

Mrs. Gordon heaved a sigh.

“So no more mid-life crisis? I should just stay at my job, even though I feel like it’s taking away from the kids? Look at this call tonight. It’s really true that my time is hefker, that people feel like they can call whenever they want. I feel like that’s something that’s really only related to being a principal.”

“I hear,” Nachman nodded, plate and fork still in hand.

“I think that if I could leave my job behind in an office, then it would make more sense for our family. I wouldn’t

need to feel pulled all the time between my family and my job. No?”

He didn’t answer.

“So what do you think I should do about Devorah’s job, then? Skip the meeting?”

“No, you can go to the meeting,” Nachman said. “Go to the meeting, have the interview, but make it clear that there is no commitment on your part. Yet.”

For most of the day in the tiny jail cell, Mr. Kleinberg’s ruminations focused on the if-onlys trap.

If only he hadn’t ignored the warning signs before installing Finance2. If only he hadn’t gotten so swept up in the excitement of its high returns that he’d become the most famous proponent of the software to the world. If only he’d seen the warning signs earlier and withdrawn before the whole thing exploded.

If only…

Meanwhile, it was getting harder to ignore his cellmate, who was beginning to feel the effects of imprisonment as well. Casey muttered to himself for most of the day, forming his plans of revenge. Used to being in charge, he took to ordering Mr. Kleinberg around, yelling at him to do whatever it was he wanted, from opening the light to bringing him his food.

Before the guards came to take him to the pay phones, Casey looked warningly at Mr. Kleinberg, aware that his muttering was audible to his cell mate.

“If anyone hears a word from you, you’re toast,” he growled to Mr. Kleinberg.

Shmiel Kleinberg lowered his eyes and nodded mutely, fearing for his physical wellbeing. A vile-tasting fear rose in his throat.

What a lowly level to be at, sharing his miserable quarters and taking orders from a shady drug dealer. Every fresh degradation burned like the first one, but here it was more than that, as he felt actual fear.

Casey claimed to be Jewish, but he was obviously a criminal with little compunction about harming others. Even in his jail cell.

You open up the instruction manual written by the developer to see how to fix it. The one who developed this toy knows the product inside out, so you can be sure that following their instructions will give you a solution for fixing it.

Why is it that when we do Mitzvos the natural world runs smoothly?

Similarly, Hashem, like the toy developer but infinitely greater, created this world and everything in it. We are lucky that He gave us an instruction manual, the Torah, for how to live in this world that He created. In this week’s Parsha, Hashem tells the Yidden that acting in the way that the Torah teaches is the key for the world, and specifically the patterns of nature, to work properly since the Torah is their source. For example, the rain falls at the appropriate time, the crops grow as they should, and all natural functions of the world work properly when Yidden are following the Torah.

Mix ‘N’ Match Leaf Cookies PARSHA

In a small saucepan, melt 1 cup of butterscotch chips over low heat, stirring constantly until smooth.

Wrap each half of dough in plastic wrap; refrigerate 1 hour for easier handling.

Using a small leaf-shaped cookie cutter, cut out center of each round cutout. Replace center leaf with the opposite color.

In large bowl, combine ½ cup sugar, ½ cup brown sugar, 1 cup oil and melted chips. Beat until smooth. Add 2 tbsp. apple juice, 1 tbsp. vanilla and 1 egg. Blend well. Add 3 cups of flour.

Heat oven to 375°F. On wellfloured surface, roll out each half of dough to 1/8-inch thickness and make circles with round cookie cutter.

Bake at 375°F. for 5 to 8 minutes or until golden brown. Cool 1 minute; remove from baking sheets.

Divide dough in half. Keep one half, plain. In the other half, stir in cocoa until well blended.

Place 1 inch apart on parchment paper. Refrigerate the cutouts for 15 minutes.
