RECAP OF CHAPTER 17: Naomi is engaged to her first cousin, Aryeh. Katarina offers to host both Naomi’s wedding and Elky’s at the manor house, which has never been done before. She gives a reason for it, but Binyamin is suspicious of the whole thing, especially when he hears that Bernard is involved.

Dena is homesick. She misses her family in Eretz Yisrael and mourns the loss of the authentic Torah home she’d always wanted to have.

CHAPTER NINETEEN

--Roizy, what are you wearing to Elky Cohen’s wedding?

--My blue dress. And you?

--My mother got permission to take remnants from some sparkly pink fabric, the one that Morah Naomi’s Shabbos skirt is made of.

--What will she make for you from it?

--A shirt. She says that for a wedding at the manor house, we need to come dressed respectfully. Not regular.

--When is Morah Naomi’s wedding?

--They don’t know yet. And please, write lighter with the pencil so I can erase it later.

--Fine, sorry. I wonder if her wedding will be in the factory, as usual, or if it will also be at the manor house.

--Why should it be at the factory?

--My brother told me that her chassan told him that they didn’t decide yet.

The chuppah took place on the small balcony, under the open sky. In the hall of the impressive house, people stood and listened to Rabbi Schwartzbrod making the brachos. Naomi stood in the hall

on the left side, which was designated for the women, leaning on an open window, near her mother, Rechel, and tried to hear every word.

But the distance, and the rav’s low voice, made it impossible for her to hear the words clearly. She heard the familiar voice, but the words were unintelligible. Perhaps it was because she was hearing only what kept replaying in her head over and over again in recent days, ever since the beginning of last week:

“If you say so, Binyamin, then I think your sister can trust you.”

“Is there really a reason to be afraid?” Binyamin had asked, stealing a glance behind him. She, Naomi, was standing there, near the door to the rav’s study.

“I don’t know, but you are a wise young man.” A sigh. “Don’t publicize what I am saying, of course, but we need to know that being close to evil people has, in history, never worked out well.”

“And this is called being close?’ Binyamin had asked hesitantly, fully aware of his sister’s deliberations.

“Celebrating on their grounds, in their house? Certainly,” Rabbi Schwartzbrod had replied firmly.

“So…Rabbi Schwartzbrod means that there is something dangerous about it? Should we update the Kush and Cohen families so that they shouldn’t either have their wedding there?”

“I wouldn’t say that. I’m not sure it’s an actual danger, but….” And then the rav had turned with his chair, fixing his eyes on a small

bulb hanging near the door. “Rebbetzin Schvirtz, your brother Binyamin is a real talmid chacham. You can trust what he says.”

Binyamin and Naomi had returned home quietly. “So you think they are really planning something bad? An experiment or something on all of the people going to Elky’s wedding?” She spoke in that peevish tone that was reserved for times when there wasn’t really whom to be angry at.

“I really hope not,” he replied. “But I’m telling you that…it’s better that your wedding shouldn’t be there.”

“Aha,” she whispered.

“Of course, you should do whatever you want; it’s your wedding,” he said suddenly.

“Yes…” she murmured. “But ever since we were little, I learned that it’s a good idea for me to listen to your advice. Not that I’m sure Mamme agrees with you one hundred percent…”

“She’s not sure, you heard that yourself. That’s why she said you should decide, because she doesn’t want to decide for you.”

“Fine,” she’d said resignedly. “Let Mamme talk to Aunt Chani, and let them know that I prefer to get married the old, accepted way. I’m tired of this whole story.”

She hadn’t met Elky since then. Now, a few minutes before the chuppah, she’d spoken to her. Elky had stood there glowing, at the front of a table laden with cakes, excitedly hugging and shaking the hands of her guests.

“Naomi!” she exclaimed as her friend drew closer. “I didn’t see you all week! There were so many things I wanted to share with you!”

“You’ll make it up after the wedding, b’ezras Hashem,” Naomi said with a laugh. She studied her friend. “You look…like a real kallah, Elky. May you build a bayis ne’eman b’Yisrael, and may you always have lots of good mazel!”

“Aunt Chani will be offended if we don’t stay for the seudah,” Naomi whispered.

“She won’t be offended; she’s not planning to eat either, although she has to stay to deal with heating the food and overseeing the serving and making sure they don’t mix up the dishes.”

“She’s really not eating here either? But why? She cooked most of the food.”

“Apparently, Binyamin has managed to get Aryeh on board with some of his suspicions.” Mamme pressed her lips together in disapproval. She didn’t like Binyamin’s approach to the issue, but she would not allow her family to separate themselves from the tzibbur without her. “In any case, we can say that as a too-excited kallah, it’s hard for you to take part in an event that lasts a whole evening.”

“It…it reminds me of a gentile ball celebration, not a wedding of ours,” Babbe whispered

“Amen, thank you!” Elky’s lips drew close to Naomi’s ear. “Afterward, turn around carefully and look at Hauptmann Katarina near the left table with Gefreiter Helena, drinking wine in crystal goblets—you won’t believe it! They put on clothes suitable for a ball, just for us. And you have no idea what a fat envelope of vouchers she gave us as a gift… Naomi, did I hear right that you chose not to get married here?!”

“Yes.”

“But why? You have to see how excited they are that we chose to celebrate in their house. Hauptmann Katarina said they’ll take lots of pictures and they’ll develop them in the studio they have here at home, and then they’ll organize it all into a book of pictures for us!”

Two other guests had approached just then, saving Naomi from having to answer her friend. She moved aside, suspiciously studying the elegant cakes near her. Chani, her aunt and future mother-in-law, had cooked almost all the food for the wedding, together with the kallah and the chassan’s mother. There was no reason to suspect that someone had put something in the food. And still…

The warning look in Binyamin’s eyes flashed in her mind, causing her to turn her back to the beautifully set table and search out

When the chuppah ended, the gramophone positioned near the wall began to play music. The chassan and kallah were led amidst the dancing to one of the other rooms in the manor house, and Naomi and her mother turned the other way.

“Here is Babbe,” Naomi said quietly. “I see she is leaving, too.”

“So go with her, Naomi,” her mother said, also in a low voice. “I’ll stay. I don’t want them to notice that our whole family didn’t participate. I don’t want them to realize that one of us suspects them of something.”

“But you’re not eating anything, are you, Mamme?”

“That’s right,” Rechel said, as they stopped at the doorway. “But as much as I look up to Binyamin, Naomi, it’s hard for me to believe that we’ll wake up tomorrow morning to discover that everyone besides us was struck with a virus of some type. I don’t know what Binyamin heard and what he didn’t hear, and like I keep saying, I agree that the whole story here is strange, but still…” She groped for the right words. “For years, things have been done the same way around here, with no changes. I just can’t believe that they’d suddenly wake up one day and decide to make things worse for us.”

“But there are changes,” Babbe Sara Liba said as she joined them at that moment. “There are changes here that I don’t like at all. This wedding doesn’t sit well with me, Rechel. Nothing here is like our regular, beautiful Jewish weddings.” She looked behind her, and Naomi noticed two girls, one of them Mila, her former assistant. Both girls were wearing identical black and green uniforms and were walking around with loaded trays, distributing meals to the guests seated at the tables. There was fast-paced music in the background, and some of the girls were dancing vigorously in a circle of their own.

“It…it reminds me of a gentile ball celebration, not a wedding of ours,” Babbe whispered. Naomi was quiet, unwilling to reveal that Elky had used the exact same word about her wedding. Mamme remained on the estate, and they went home.

“Don’t feel bad about your choice, Naomi,” Babbe said. They walked through a well-tended garden, from where they reached “their” territory, the wide path that wound around the wheat field. In recent years, the field was producing less, and they used the wheat primarily for Pesach matzah. The Wangels provided them with sacks of flour from the outside for the bread they made year-round.

“I just hope Aunt Chani doesn’t feel bad.” Naomi’s face looked contorted, as if she’d just swallowed a big lump of something.

“She doesn’t.”

“Even when she’ll hear about the monetary gift that Katarina gave Elky as a wedding gift?”

“Chani appreciates you without any connection to gifts or salaries,” Babbe said vehemently. “She knows you since you were born, she knows your ma’alos and your chesronos, and she wanted the shidduch.”

“She…” Naomi was quiet for a moment. “She deliberated about it. I know. She herself told me that she was deliberating about something important. I’m sure it was this.”

Babbe put her hand on Naomi’s arm. “The zivug of a person is as hard as splitting the sea,” she said, “but I promise you that she has no regrets about this shidduch. Even if she’ll hear about the envelope of marks that Elky just got.”

As a symbolic wedding gift from her sisters, Dena had received a shtender—a rather funny gift from the sisters of the kallah. But that was a tradition in the family. It began when Margalit, who was twelve when Toby, the oldest, got married, took all the money she had saved from Chanukah and Purim, and some money that her parents supplemented, and without asking the kallah, went to a furniture store and bought a shtender for Toby. “It’s because I heard you talking to your friend one day about how you can’t wait to hear the kol Torah in your home,” she’d explained earnestly.

“And besides, that’s all I had enough money for,” she’d whispered that night to Dena, her younger sister, as they were both lying in bed, schmoozing with each other. “But did you see how happy she was with it?”

Toby really had been happy with the shtender and had thanked Margalit for it over and over again. And since then, the shtender had become the traditional gift given upon the marriage of one of the Weiss children.

Where was her shtender now? Or rather, Bentzy’s shtender? Not that he had ever used it much, but now he didn’t use it at all. The shtender had gone down to the storage room when they’d organized the apartment in order to rent it out, and she hadn’t asked whether or not it was a good idea to pack it up with the rest of the things that would be shipped to Austria. It was a shame. She should have brought it with them, to this apartment they had finally moved into this week. Duvi read his Chumash and teitsch each day with a sparkle in his eyes, and she had to do what she could to preserve that enthusiasm.

Everything was so strange and unfamiliar here; she didn’t like it at all. It was just…cold. The kitchen was actually nice, a European style that she could have only dreamed of in Israel. But there was no one to see it in any case, other than her husband, kids, and in-laws, and she was hardly in the mood of cooking and baking. Her mother-in-law invited them to come whenever they wanted to, and she hadn’t even made one Shabbos here herself. So why did she need that big kitchen? Why did she need this whole big house?

Maybe the shtender would have infused her with a bit of warmth here.

Could she even get such a thing in Vienna? Surely she could. Duvi would be thrilled to learn over it.

At least someone would.

CHEESY PESTO BUNS

This is a delicious and fun way to elevate your pizza dough. For those that don’t go for pesto, simply replace it with some extra crushed garlic to turn them into gooey garlic buns. Yum.

Ingredients:

1 tablespoon dry yeast

1 teaspoon sugar

½ cup apple juice

½ cup warm water

3 cups flour

1 teaspoon table salt

1-2 tablespoons oil

½ jar pesto, or more to taste

6 oz. shredded mozzarella cheese

¼ cup mayonnaise

⅓ cup olive oil

4 frozen parsley cubes or 2 teaspoons dried parsley

6 cloves garlic, crushed

Directions:

1. Place the dry yeast, sugar, apple juice, and warm water into a large bowl and let sit about 5 minutes until frothy. Add the flour, salt, and oil and knead with gloved hands until a dough forms.

2. Cover with a tea towel and let the dough rise for 1 hour in a warm area.

3. Line 2 round pans or 1 baking sheet with parchment paper. Set aside.

4. Once the dough has risen, preheat your oven to 350°.

5. Roll out the dough into a large, thin rectangle. Spread the pesto on top of the dough. Combine the mozzarella and mayonnaise to form a paste. Spread the paste on top of the pesto layer.

6. Carefully roll up the dough from the longer side (this can be a bit messy). Slice into 1” wide buns. Place the buns cut side up in the prepared pan/s.

7. In a small bowl, combine the olive oil, parsley, and garlic. Drizzle the mixture on top of the buns. Bake for 25-30 minutes until golden and cooked through. Serve warm with marinara sauce on the side.

EASY SPICED SALMON

This salmon has no measurements. You simply drizzle and sprinkle to your liking. Fast, hassle-free and a winner every time.

Ingredients:

1 1.5-lb. Side of salmon

Salt

Black pepper

White pepper (optional for added spice)

Paprika

Garlic powder

Honey or maple syrup

Freshly squeezed lemon juice

Olive oil

Directions:

1. Preheat your oven to 375° and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

2. Rinse the salmon and place on the baking sheet. Pat dry with a paper towel.

3. Sprinkle the salmon with salt, black pepper, white pepper, paprika, and garlic powder. Drizzle with some honey, lemon juice, and oil on top.

4. Bake for about 20-25 minutes, or until the fish flakes easily at its thickest part.

SIMPLE LOADED SWEET POTATOES

Sweet potatoes, or any kind of potatoes, create the perfect blank canvas for toppings. With this cheesy sweet potato, you can choose to keep it simple as we did, or load it up with roasted veggies, fresh veggies, guacamole, sriracha, or any other topping that you like. If you’re not a sweet potato person, you can also try this with Yukon Gold potatoes. Enjoy.

Ingredients:

4 sweet potatoes or Yukon Gold Potatoes, washed well Olive oil

Salt

Freshly ground black pepper

6 oz. shredded mozzarella cheese

2 tablespoons parmesan cheese

1 teaspoon salt

Toppings of choice (guacamole, scallions, jalapeno, roasted veggies, sour cream, sriracha, etc.)

Directions:

1. Preheat your oven to 425° and line a baking sheet with parchment paper

2. Cut the potatoes into halves.

3. Lightly rub each potato with olive oil and sprinkle with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Place the potatoes, face-down on the prepared baking sheet.

4. Bake for 45-50 minutes until soft.

5. Flip the potatoes and remove half of the flesh into a bowl. Mash it with a fork and mix in half of the shredded cheese, parmesan cheese, and salt. Spoon the mixture back into the potato ‘boats’. Top with the rest of the mozzarella cheese.

6. Bake for 10-15 minutes until the cheese is melted.

7. Remove from the oven and top with your desired garnishes. Serve warm.

Recap: Shachne excitedly tells Mrs. Kleinberg that the bail hearing has been pushed off, thanks to the arrests of a drug dealing ring in the local jail. This gives them more time to prepare for the bail hearing. Mrs. Kleinberg asks Mrs. Gordon to tell her daughters the good news in school, and awkwardly thanks the principal for all her help.

Bruchi Kleinberg tries to ignore all the stares she gets in school when she rejoins her class. Mrs. Kleinberg knocks on the door to call Bruchi out, but when Mrs. Gordon realizes how embarrassed that will make Bruchi feel, she changes her mind and tells Mrs. Tabak to call Bruchi out after class instead.

In Pessy Cooper’s parsha lessons, she praises Nechama Raizel’s knowledge and is thrilled to see how Nechama Raizel lights up from the attention.

CHAPTER 30

Bruchi didn’t breathe a sigh of relief when she realized that Mrs. Gordon wasn’t going to call her out after all. That would have been too obvious. But she did slowly release her tensed up muscles.

She wished she could be under her covers now, listening to music. Instead, she leaned forward on her palm, pretending to listen intently to the lesson while not a word penetrated.

When the bell rang at the end of the lesson, Bruchi nearly jumped, she’d been so deep in her trance. She nearly jumped again when Mrs. Tabak uttered a low, “Bruchi?”

Bruchi looked toward her teacher while doing a quick scan of her surroundings out of the corner of her eye.

Good, none of her friends had noticed.

“Mrs. Gordon wants you to go to her office,” Mrs. Tabak said.

Bruchi gave a quick nod and moved away, her mind

turning frantically.

What did Mrs. Gordon want to tell her?

“Come in,” Mrs. Gordon said warmly when Bruchi knocked on the door of her office.

Mrs. Gordon could sense the anxiety radiating from the girl as she walked in.

“Don’t worry, Bruchi,” Mrs. Gordon said immediately. “Everything is okay. There’s actually some good news.”

“Is my father coming home?”

Mrs. Gordon swallowed. “B’ezras Hashem I hope he’ll come home very soon. It seems more likely than ever that they’ll be able to get bail, because the next bail hearing was pushed off again. Your mother says that that gives them a much better chance of getting bail.”

Bruchi nodded, though there was definite disappointment in her eyes.

Free to be vulnerable in this office, where none of her friends could see her, her pain and fear was nearly palpable in the room. Mrs. Gordon couldn’t ignore it.

“How is it to be back in class?” Mrs. Gordon asked casually, giving a slight indication that Bruchi should sit.

Bruchi shrugged, then sat gingerly on the edge of a chair. She hoped Mrs. Gordon wasn’t going to start talking to her about bitachon again.

Or maybe, deep down, Bruchi hoped she would.

“Recess is worse,” Bruchi said, surprising herself.

Mrs. Gordon smiled.

“Did you tell your friends about what’s going on?”

“Nah,” Bruchi said.

“They were very worried for you.”

“Yeah, I know, poor Bruchi, did you hear, her father was arrested!” Bruchi said sarcastically.

Mrs. Gordon laughed, taking Bruchi by surprise. Bruchi smiled hesitantly.

“Okay, I guess some of them do care, but what do they know, they can’t imagine how scary all this is,” Bruchi said. Without meaning to, her gaze strayed to the shelf where Mrs. Gordon kept the book on bitachon.

Mrs. Gordon didn’t turn to the shelf.

Bruchi wasn’t Perry. What had worked for Perry wouldn’t work for Bruchi. As the master educator she was, Mrs. Gordon knew that.

Mrs. Gordon just nodded.

“I don’t know anyone whose father went to jail,” Bruchi said. “It’s such a not normal thing to happen.”

Being in such a terribly non-normal situation was affecting Bruchi’s confidence, making her wonder if she was still the same person. At thirteen years old, her identity was too fragile to fit into her new life.

“Don’t worry, Bruchi,” Mrs. Gordon said. “You’re still the same you. Same cute, fun and popular girl.”

Now it was just Bruchi in her office, and she could focus exclusively on Bruchi’s needs.

“It all feels like a bad dream when you wake up in the morning, huh?” Mrs. Gordon said.

“Yeah,” Bruchi agreed, a flash of surprise in her eyes at how well Mrs. Gordon understood her. “Like it was all fake. But then I realize that it really did happen.” The expression on her face made it clear just how wrenching that realization was for her, every time.

“That’s really normal,” Mrs. Gordon said. “It’s too shocking for you to really process it.”

There was pain reflected in Bruchi’s eye, and her lips twisted.

“It’s allowed to be hard,” Mrs. Gordon said quietly.

Bruchi dropped her gaze into her lap, shoulders hunching forward. Mrs. Gordon was quiet, giving her space.

Thoughts flew through Bruchi’s head as she sat there, trying not to collapse under the weight of her emotions.

Why was Mrs. Gordon being so nice to her when Perry wasn’t even there?

Didn’t Mrs. Gordon have it in for her? And how come Mrs. Gordon’s words were so calming when everything her own mother said made Bruchi feel even more awful?

Did Mrs. Gordon really mean all of this, or was she the same type of phony fake that Bruchi’s Tante Mindy was?

Tante Mindy had dropped off pastries as if she could sweeten up the whole thing, but Mrs. Gordon was sitting here, looking almost as distressed as Bruchi’s hurt felt.

“Yeah,” Bruchi said. “It’s not even hard, it’s like crazy. It doesn’t even make any sense. It’s such a slow situation.”

The usual cliches she was used to using in her language couldn’t capture how terrible this all was, but she didn’t know how to express it better.

Bruchi inclined her head. It was obvious that she enjoyed hearing the compliment.

“You just be the best Bruchi Kleinberg you can be, and your friends are going to see very quickly that you haven’t become a scary person.” She paused, looking at the clock. “Lunch is almost over and I want you to have time to eat, Bruchi, but you can come back to my office whenever you’d like, okay?”

Bruchi nodded, getting up. She felt loads lighter than when she’d entered the office. Mrs. Gordon was actually gratified to see traces of the swagger that used to bother her so much returning to Bruchi’s bearing.

As Bruchi turned to leave, Mrs. Gordon said, “Oh, and Bruchi?”

“Yeah?”

“If you ever need to call, Perry knows my number.” She winked. Bruchi nodded.

After Bruchi left, Mrs. Gordon tried to focus on what she’d been doing at her computer, as the conversation replayed in her mind.

Underneath the brand names, brashness, and bold behavior, Bruchi was so vulnerable. It had taken this crisis to unearth it, but it had surely been there all along. It proved something Mrs. Gordon knew well –there was no such thing as a bad child. Negative behavior usually came from a place of hurt, not badness.

She was still thinking about this, and about the way Bruchi’s shoulders had lifted as she walked out of the office, when a new phone call set off the phone on her desk.

Mildly annoyed at the phone’s interruption, Mrs. Gordon picked up.

“Hello?”

“Hi, Shaina, how are you?” It was the familiar voice of her sister-in-law Devorah.

QI understand that I am supposed to be eating items lower in fat while I am trying to lose weight, but I am a little confused about saturated fats. Is it good or bad for me? Your clarity is appreciated.

ASaturated fat is a type of fat molecule that is saturated with hydrogen atoms, meaning it has no double bonds between carbon atoms. This saturation gives it a solid form at room temperature and makes it more stable for cooking. It's commonly found in animal products such as meat, dairy, and eggs, as well as some plant-based sources like coconut oil and palm oil. We get saturated fat primarily from our diet, especially if we consume a lot of processed foods, fried foods, fatty meats, and full-fat dairy products. It's also present in some natural foods like coconut and certain types of nuts and seeds. Saturated fats can be found in fatty cuts of meat, buttery pastries, creamy cheeses, and decadent desserts. It's also hiding in some unexpected places like processed snacks, fried foods, and fast-food meals. Knowing which foods are high in saturated fat allows us to make better choices when grocery shopping and dining out.

While on this topic, let’s tap into other forms of fat that we consume:

Unsaturated fat- Unsaturated fats tend to be liquid at room temperature, while saturated fats are solid. There are two types of unsaturated fats, monounsaturated fat and polyunsaturated fats. Both are vital to our bodies. These are the best types of fats for us.

Monounsaturated fat- Monounsaturated fats are plant-based fats that reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and provide health benefits especially when used to replace saturated and trans-fat. This includes olive oil, canola oil, avocado, peanut butter and many seeds and nuts.

Polyunsaturated fat- Polyunsaturated fats are divided further into omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. These fatty acids are essential, promote heart health, and provide an anti-inflammatory effect. Sources of Omega-3 fatty acids include: Tuna, salmon, sardines, flaxseeds and flaxseed oil, walnuts and chia seeds. Sources of Omega-6 fatty acids include: Safflower oil, sunflower oil, corn oil, soybean oil, sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds.

Trans fats increase LDL (bad) cholesterol and lower HDL (good) cholesterol. They are very unhealthy. Artificial trans fats are liquid oils that have been turned into solids in an industrial process. They are found in many fast foods, processed foods, and foods packaged with preservatives. Naturally occurring trans

fats are in some dairy and meat products. The best way to ensure that a food is trans-fat free is to read the ingredient list and ensure “partially hydrogenated oils” are not listed. Sources of trans fat include: Fried foods, pie crusts, packaged cookies and crackers, margarine and many processed and prepackaged foods. Because our bodies do not need any transfat to function, consume as little as possible, if any at all. Read food labels carefully and substitute trans-fat with a source of monounsaturated fat or polyunsaturated fat when able.

Back to saturated fats. Are saturated fats good for us? A million-dollar question! The answer isn't straightforward. While small amounts of saturated fat are necessary for various bodily functions like hormone production and cell structure, excessive consumption has been linked to an increased risk of heart disease and other health issues. It can raise levels of LDL cholesterol (the "bad" cholesterol) in the blood, which can contribute to the buildup of plaque in the arteries, leading to heart problems. The American Heart Association, recommends aiming for a dietary pattern that achieves 5% to 6% of calories from saturated fat. For example, if you need about 2,000 calories a day, no more than 120 of them should come from saturated fat. That’s about 13 grams of saturated fat per day.

Saturated fat itself isn't solely responsible for weight gain. Weight gain occurs when we consume more calories than we burn, regardless of whether those calories come from fat, carbohydrates, or protein. However, foods high in saturated fat tend to be caloriedense, so overconsumption can contribute to weight gain if not balanced with physical activity.

Instead of reaching for that extra cheesy pizza, opt for leaner protein sources like grilled chicken or fish and load up on colorful fruits and vegetables. Choose lowfat or fat-free dairy products and use healthier cooking oils like olive oil or avocado oil instead of butter.

Reading nutrition labels can also be eye-opening. Look for products with lower saturated fat content and be wary of hidden sources in processed foods. And remember, moderation is key. It's okay to indulge occasionally, but making healthier choices most of the time will have a positive impact on your overall health. The more important thing to remember is the overall dietary picture. Saturated fats are just one piece of the puzzle.

Although every person is different on the outside we all share the same source on the inside.

When you walk into a room, you notice that there are light bulbs in the ceiling, a couple of cell phones plugged into the wall charging, and the AC is on full blast! All three of these devices are very different from each other. They have different parts and different uses, but they all have something in common, their life force, which is electricity. Regardless of how different they look or how diverse their uses are, they would all stop working if they were to lose their life force, electricity.

What are different actions we can do to help even those we do not know? How are we connected to them?

Imagine a group of people sitting together. One may be from New York, another from Maryland, and even another from New Zealand. One may have brown hair, another blonde. One may be good at math, another at art, and a third an expert in Halacha. It may seem like there is no connection between these different types of people, yet on a deeper level, there is. They all come from the same life source. Every person has a spark of holiness, a neshama, which is a piece of Hashem. Since each person has a life spark from the same source, we are all connected! It is a Mitzvah to love every Yid. When we realize that we are deeply connected with others beyond our external appearances, this leads us to treat them with love and respect. Imagine, if we must be kind to someone we’ve never met, shouldn’t we be kind to our friends whom we know very well?

Using the template, cut out the smaller half of the heart and then the larger one, so you have a template of each half.

Cut out the heart, by cutting along the outer heart. Align the two hearts so one is on top of the other.

Pack the stuffing inside the heart. Tie the last few strips together.

Heart Fleece Pillow

On the first piece of felt, place the smaller heart in the middle & trace it using a permanent marker. Flip the paper over and trace a second half to create a full heart.

Using the inner heart as guide of when to stop, cut a thin strip of felt at the bottom and top of the hearts. Using the 2 strips of felt from both hearts tie them together to connect them.

Enjoy your Heart Fleece Pillow!

Place the larger heart on one side and trace. Flip it and trace again, creating a small heart traced inside a larger one. Repeat steps 2-3 with the 2nd piece.

Cut the edge of the rest of the heart into strips and then tie them together like the previous steps. Leave about the length of 4 fingers untied.
