Recap: Mrs. Gordon speaks to the eighth-grade class the morning of the bail hearing, seeing how shaken up they are from their usual superficial interests.

Jerry, at Casey’s birthday party, is terrified when he meets Detective Garrison, disguised as Poker at the party.

On the way home from the bail hearing, the Kleinbergs discuss their next steps in dealing with the ordeal they’ve suddenly found themselves in.

Chayala Gordon asks her mother about the Kleinbergs, which reminds Mrs. Gordon about the phone call from Mrs. Foxman the previous night.

CHAPTER 27

Looking into Jerry’s eyes, Garrison knew that it was time to act.

Once Jerry had blown his cover, he couldn’t know what Jerry would do next.

Still tightly holding on to Jerry’s arm and staying wary of any sudden moves, he pressed a button on his radio. That press of his finger was all that was needed.

Calmly, Garrison steered Jerry over to the side of the party deck, keeping up a running stream of inane talk.

“Yeah, I tell all my customers that I’m the only one who has the real stuff, the real quality, you know?”

Jerry was completely unresponsive.

Was he calculating his next move?

He needn’t have bothered.

A sudden glare illuminated the dimness of the patio. The partygoers blinked, then started shrieking in fear and confusion. Glasses went shattering to the floor as people started realizing they were surrounded.

“Put your hands up on your head! Hands on your head!” a voice barked over a powerful megaphone. “This is the police. Put your hands on your head and remain where you are.”

Law enforcement officials were swarming all over the

place now, and the screaming only got louder as the scene turned into a frenzy.

The guards, who had been stationed all around the property perimeter, had been forced to lay down their arms and were sitting on the floor as policemen searched them one by one and led them away in handcuffs.

“You will not get hurt if you stay where you are,” the authoritative voice on the megaphone continued blaring, attempting to restore some order to the havoc. It was Lieutenant Blackman himself! Jerry realized, feeling his initial horror turn into something even more dreadful.

Garrison had abandoned Jerry the instant the police force had descended on the party, going straight to Blackman’s side. His most important objective of the night was to corner Casey.

“Find me on the northwestern corner,” he said urgently into his radio, hoping the shock effect had worked to stop Casey from any escape plan he’d had in mind. Garrison had briefed the police earlier, warning them not to storm the place until it was completely surrounded. But they still couldn’t take any chances.

In the 30 seconds it took Garrison to cross the patio and meet his fellow police officers, Casey was already completely trussed up and ready to be taken to the police car.

Garrison let out the breath he’d been holding all night. “Get him into the car, guys,” he shouted to the two police officers he’d tasked with this mission. “Ignore everyone else!”

They left the shouts of the megaphone, the screams of the party attendees and the blinding light behind as they ever-so-carefully walked their prime catch to the police car.

“No funny business,” Garrison warned repeatedly. This would be the arrest of the year. And he had been the one who’d managed to pull it off.

“Are we going home?” Bruchi asked as she entered the car together with Perry. Shachne had driven Mrs. Kleinberg to Yossi’s house to pick up the two girls, who had spent their afternoon at their brother’s house.

“Yes, we’re going home now,” Mrs. Kleinberg said. Her tone was uncharacteristically soft as she took in the girls’ appearance. They looked abandoned and forlorn, like waifs left to the mercy of the passersby.

“What’s going to happen tomorrow?” Perry wanted to know as they closed their seatbelts and Shachne sped off. “Are you going back to court?”

“No,” her mother said. “The judge agreed to reschedule the next hearing, so there’s more time to prepare for it.”

She hadn’t understood why the lawyers were so happy with the judge’s approval of that request. She wanted Shmiel home today, tonight, or by the very latest tomorrow. But they’d explained that having more time to prepare, and for the media to calm down, made it far more likely for her husband to even be able to get bail. It was a definite win, they claimed.

Although they made sure to remind her that it still did not mean they would definitely be able to set bail.

“So what are we going to do until Tatty comes home?” Bruchi asked.

Mrs. Kleinberg didn’t want to tell her that it wasn’t until, it was if.

“You and Perry will go back to school,” Mrs. Kleinberg said.

“And we’ll figure out a way to make sure your house is protected,” Shachne put in. “Maybe an alarm system. I’ll look into it. It shouldn’t be too hard to figure out. Then you’ll be able to be home yourself and you won’t have to worry.”

Bruchi looked as if she were ready to cry once again, but she controlled the tears.

No one was asking her what she wanted, anyway.

Mrs. Gordon watched as a blush quickly covered Chayala’s face, and she smiled slightly. Chayala looked down.

“Oh, Mrs. Foxman told you?” she asked in confusion. “I didn’t think – sorry! I didn’t think she would tell you about it.”

“She only called me because she was so surprised. She says you’re doing a wonderful job and that she thought you’re really enjoying it. I actually thought so, too, so we were both left wondering why you would ever want to drop the job.”

“No, I am enjoying it! I love the job, that’s not why I asked to drop it,” Chayala rushed to say. “Just that I didn’t think it was the right thing for me anymore.”

“Why, Chayala?” her mother said.

When a long pause still didn’t yield any answer from Chayala, she pressed, “Is it something to do with your helping at home?”

Chayala blushed even redder.

“Yes,” she said simply. She didn’t say anything more.

“Didn’t we discuss this?” Mrs. Gordon asked, softly.

“Remember when you were first chosen for the job? You asked me if it was okay. Remember?”

“Yes, of course, and you told me that you would manage fine without my help.”

“So what happened now?” Chayala didn’t say anything.

“It really is okay, Chayala. Your job right now is not only to help at home, even though I appreciate it so much and I think it’s wonderful that you’re so happy to help and that you feel such a responsibility for it. It shows what amazing middos you have, and I’m so proud of you for it. But you’re also a high-school girl, and part of being in high school means doing the extracurricular jobs you’re given. You’ve been doing an amazing job, so why would you stop?”

As her mother spoke, Chayala rubbed her finger back and forth over the counter, not meeting her mother’s gaze.

“Chayala. Please. Tell me. Is there something else going on that I don’t know about?”

“No!” Chayala finally said. “Of course you know about it, but – “

She let her sentence hang.

“But what?” Mrs. Gordon prompted.

Suddenly, she knew exactly what Chayala had been about to say.

“But you weren’t supposed to know about it, is that it?” she asked suddenly, hoping her flash of inspiration was on-target.

Chayala looked up and smiled sheepishly.

“Yes, exactly,” she said. “I overheard you talking to Tante Devorah about getting a new job, and I was scared that you need a new job because of me, because I’m not helping enough and you don’t want to be busy at home anymore with being a principal.”

Mrs. Gordon looked at her sweet daughter’s face and was at a loss for words.

“You always told me what a big zechus I had for helping out so much, because being a principal is avodas hakodesh and I was helping you do this very important job. So I didn’t want to be the one to make you stop, Mommy. That’s why I asked Mrs. Foxman to give my job to someone else. I’d rather be home more so you won’t have to leave your job.”

“Was that a really bad thing to do?” Chayala asked anxiously. “I know that you didn’t want anyone to know, so I made sure not to tell Mrs. Foxman the reason behind it.”

“That was responsible of you,” Mrs. Gordon said. “But Chayala, you don’t have to worry so much about your mother. You can go ahead and do your job. Stay late as many times as you like, and spend time planning and practicing with your friends. It’s exactly what you’re supposed to be doing, and you’re doing a great job of it.”

“But Mommy, does that mean you’ll leave your job?”

Chayala asked. “You’ll stop being a principal, and helping all your students and being busy with chinuch? Aren’t you always telling me that it’s the best thing to do?”

Mrs. Gordon looked at her puppy-dog earnest daughter and felt something in her heart tug.

It was true, she did always feel that her job was more than just a job, but rather a calling. It was the way

she approached everything she did as part of being principal, knowing that her decisions could impact futures and build worlds.

“Right, didn’t you just say that you were helping this nebach girl who her father was arrested and she was in your office today? That’s something you can only do if you’re a principal.”

That was also true. Being a principal put her in the unique position of helping girls like Perry and Bruchi, girls who had their worlds turned over and needed someone to help them right it. She thought of the chizuk talk she’d given her eighth-graders that day and the way they’d brightened up from her words.

“So are you going to stay the principal of Bnos Golda, Mommy, even if I’m class president, and I can’t help you?”

Mrs. Gordon came out of her ruminations with a jolt. “Chayala, sweetheart,” she said with a smile, “whether or not I stay at my job or will be trying to find another one doesn’t have anything to do with your job as class president. There are a lot of other factors involved.”

Chayala’s face fell slightly at her mother’s words. “Don’t you trust your mommy to make the right decision?” Mrs. Gordon asked lightly, smiling.

“Of course I do!” Chayala said immediately. “But Mommy, are you really going to leave?”

“Hey, I didn’t say I made the decision already,” Mrs. Gordon said playfully. “But don’t worry, when I need expert advice, I’ll know to ask Miss Chayala Gordon. After all, she’s the one who really decides which teachers her Mommy should hire, right?”

Chayala smiled reluctantly.

“Do you want to go tell the kids that supper is ready?”

Mrs. Gordon changed the subject. “I think they’re playing in the playroom.”

“Sure,” Chayala said, turning to go.

“But Chayala – “

“Yes, Ma?”

“Don’t forget that it’s still absolutely confidential that I am even thinking of leaving Bnos Golda, okay?”

“Of course, I know that.”

“Good.”

Mrs. Gordon watched Chayala leave the kitchen, a small smile lingering on her lips. That girl was really too much! As the oldest girl in the family, she sometimes acted like the mother of the house.

But then the smile slowly faded as she thought about what Chayala had said.

All the angst she’d been experiencing in her principal role had receded lately, with the Kleinberg scandal occupying all her mind space. She hadn’t even had a chance to update her resume to send to Devorah, she’d been so busy.

The conversation with Chayala brought all of that back to the fore, and uneasily, she wondered: Had she been too hasty in making the decision to leave her job? •

NINE A.M. IS A COMPLETELY FICTIONAL STORY WHICH TAKES PLACE FIFTY YEARS AFTER THE HOLOCAUST.

RECAP OF CHAPTER 14: Elky gets engaged. The kids in Naomi’s preschool want to know why she hasn’t gotten engaged yet. Some of the non-frum kids ask Naomi to show them how to write in aleph-beis; Mila is furious at Naomi for teaching these kids things their parents wouldn’t want them to learn, and promises to tell the higher-ups about this. Katy sticks up for Naomi. Dena is miserable about having to leave Eretz Yisrael for her in-laws’ affluent home in Vienna. It makes her feel even more inferior next to her high-achieving sisters.

CHAPTER SIXTEEN

On the new board in the classroom:

“Bais Yaakov lechu v’nelchah b’or Hashem.”

“It’s so nice!” Katy beamed, while the girls enthusiastically sang the song that Babbe Sara Liba had taught Naomi.

“My grandmother used to live in Lodz, Poland, before the Nazis came to power,” Naomi said in a whisper when the song came to an end. “She taught there at one of the dozens of Bais Yaakov schools established by Sarah Schenirer, and to this day she hasn’t forgotten how wonderful it was. When I was a little girl, she sang this song to me every night, before I went to sleep. When she was a teenager, she participated in Bais Yaakov training for aliyah to Eretz Yisrael. But in the end she couldn’t go, and she stayed in Poland.”

“And that’s how she was saved, actually,” eleven-year-old Renia Stauber pointed out, and Naomi smiled at her. A few of the students stood on the line that Naomi had drawn in white chalk down the middle of the room, to make it easier to see what the older girls were doing at their desks. On the other side of the room, Mila was playing with the younger children, ignoring what was going on in

the small classroom. It was the second day that Naomi had dared clearly announce the opening of the “Bais Yaakov” class, and Mila didn’t say anything anymore, even though more than a third of the girls in the class belonged to Leo Sherer’s group.

“But Mila is very upset about this,” Katy whispered loudly at the end of the lesson. Her voice carried from one side of the room to the other. The children who had gotten up to listen to the story about Bais Yaakov went back to their blocks, and the girls in the class went to play in the area behind their desks. “Yesterday she went to the offices to complain again, but Eva Sherer, Leo’s daughter, told her that they’d heard what she had to say, and they were looking into the situation, and she should stop nudging them already.”

She laughed, loudly as always. “I know everything! Mila also said that she didn’t want me to be the second assistant, but they told her that this is what’s going to be for now. And I’m happy, because I love being here; you’re the best teacher!” Suddenly she paled, fixing a long and confused look at the entrance to the large room. Then she grabbed the broom and ran to the furthermost corner of the kindergarten.

Leo Sherer and his cronies, the members of the camp board, walked right into the classroom. They crossed the white line, even though they did not belong to the Bais Yaakov group, who were the only ones allowed to cross it. A few of the children began to get

out of their places, but Mila, with a rapid motion of her hand, had them all sit back down immediately.

Leo Sherer looked around. A smile crossed his face when he saw his grandson Dror sitting and coloring obediently at a low table. The child waved excitedly to his grandfather.

“We understand that a religious class has opened here,” Mr. Sherer said, studying the board and the words there. “Against all the agreements.”

“There are no agreements, Mr. Sherer,” Naomi said quietly. “The only practical thing that was decided after my hearing last week was that another assistant would be joining from the non-religious group: Katy Gross.”

“And what about the status quo that you are constantly violating?” asked Anika, Leo’s oldest daughter.

“I haven’t received any complaints from the parents.” Naomi’s lips were white. What could they do to her? Switch her job? That would make her very happy.

No, that was not entirely accurate, not since she’d grown to love her young charges and their shining eyes. She wouldn’t mind the salary of a different job, of course, but she didn’t want a different job.

Or maybe they’d threaten to fire her completely, without giving her any alternative work?

It was hard to believe that the German supervisors would accept the idea of someone being idle in the camp’s confines.

“We are receiving complaints,” remarked a grayhaired man whose name Naomi did not remember. “The situation cannot continue this way.”

“There will be a clear separation here.” Sherer was decisive and firm. “Because the idea of opening a classroom setting for the big girls who don’t go out to work yet is actually a good one. The boys this age are not spending time playing foolish kindergarten games, so likewise, the girls should acquire some useful knowledge that will help them with their work in the future, too. I spoke to Mr. Wangel today, and he is pleased with the idea. But the studies in the classroom are not supposed to include anything of a religious nature at all.”

“I—”

“What did you draw here?”

Naomi held her breath for a moment, but the proud grandfather did not notice the large square letters spelling out dalet, reish, vav, reish, which were swallowed up in the mass of orange scribbles.

“It’s fire, Grandpa!” Dror Elkovitz said, sounding like he thought he was stating the obvious.

“I see. And why did you draw fire?”

“’Cause fire is really pretty!” the boy enthused. “Like Mama every week…” He suddenly fell silent and began nervously scratching his neck.

“Like what?” the older man encouraged Dror to continue. But to everyone’s shock, the child burst into tears and refused to say another word.

His grandfather tried a few different ways to soothe the hysterical child, to little avail. Dror splayed himself out on the floor, kicked his feet petulantly, and screamed, “I don’t want to tell, I don’t want to tell!”

Who is going to teach the other group? I mean, I’m certainly not planning on becoming a preschool teacher!”

Leo Sherer raised his hand and stopped her. “Due to the fact that there are parents who are interested in giving their daughters a religious education, those who will sign that they want their daughters to study under you will be able to do so, and you can include study of religion and Torah in that class. But for those who do not want to—you have no permission to teach their daughters anything that has to do with religion. Is that clear?”

“Certainly.”

“We are going to divide the children here into two totally separate groups; there will be two classes. Within a week, I’d like to see a clear list of the division, and there will be no more arguments and disputes in this kindergarten. It will be your job, Miss Schvirtz, to go from house to house and get the parents’ signatures,” he said. His gaze roved over the play areas, the crafts corner, and the area where the children ate their meals. A proud smile crossed his face when he saw the word “Dror” at the bottom of one of the papers, a scribbled mess of yellow, red, and orange, hanging on the wall. “Dror, sweetie, your picture is so cute!” Leo gushed, and the child jumped out of his chair and dashed over to his grandfather.

Seeing that they weren’t accomplishing anything, Leo Sherer, along with his entourage, waved and left the room.

Mila turned to Naomi. “It’s hard for me to believe that his mother would say she wants a religious education for her child,” she said. “Even if at home she keeps a bit of tradition, for whatever reason, she’s not going make a public declaration about it. And I want to see which other ones will do it.”

Her eyes narrowed. “But there’s one thing I still don’t understand. Who is going to teach the other group? I mean, I’m certainly not planning on becoming a preschool teacher!”

Rechel felt eyes boring into her back as she passed the iron over the puffed sleeves of the white blouse. She turned to the door. “Good afternoon, Hautpmann Katarina,” she said politely. There was silence in the sewing room.

“You can all continue, it’s alright,” Katarina said as she crossed the threshold into the room. “Can you come outside for a moment, Rechel?”

Binyamin and Naomi’s mother unplugged the iron and followed the commander to the little clearing in front of the sewing workshop. For a moment, they were both quiet.

“Look,” Katarina said, her tone somewhat apologetic. “The truth is that I tried to have your Naomi transferred to a different job. But I saw that the whole story with the preschool, the teacher, and the authorities there has become a burning issue in your offices. Is that right?”

“That’s one of the reasons I want to get Naomi out of there,” Rechel interjected.

“Could be. But because years ago, we absolved ourselves of the handling of these small details, my husband claims that we should continue with that approach, and not interfere.”

Her husband, of course, was Mr. Josef Wangel.

Rechel gaped at the ground in shock.

“What we can do is raise her salary a little bit for being the teacher. Instead of ten marks a week, Naomi will get twelve.” She smiled her regular sour smile and studied Rechel, who was studiously gazing at the weeds growing near her feet. “I hope that’s alright.”

It took Rechel a moment to gather her wits and respond with the requisite good manners. “Thank you very much, Hauptmann Katarina. It…certainly sounds better.” A little less worse, to put it more accurately.

What was twelve marks a week? Gornisht mit gornisht. Those who worked a full week at the sewing workshop earned thirtyfive marks! Binyamin got sixty marks for his work! She had no idea how much Elky, Naomi’s friend, made for her office work, and she wouldn’t even think about the Sherer family, whose salaries were one of the biggest secrets in this place. Katarina’s disappointing response did not leave any place for further deliberations.

Two weeks ago, her mother had spoken to her and her sister Chani. Chani and her husband had deliberated for a full week before responding in the affirmative. Now it was Rechel’s turn to deliberate, but the decision rendered by the camp supervisors would lead her to the only logical decision that remained.

Because it was abundantly clear that now there was no chance for a better shidduch.

All the aunts said that Dena’s refined, gentle nature was perfectly suited for the European class and politeness of the Hanter family, but she didn’t feel European in the slightest. Nevertheless, Hashem had sent this shidduch specifically for her.

After their wedding, Dena and Bentzy had traveled once to Vienna. It seemed like a very charming place to tour and visit, if you could put aside for a moment the hostile past of Austria as a whole, and of this city specifically.

It had seemed like Bentzy was settling into Israel very well. In the morning he was in kollel, and in the afternoon he had a job doing computerized proofreading of sta”m. He was good at that. She wondered if such a thing existed in Vienna. Maybe he could find a similar job here? For now, though, it seemed like he was over his head with his father’s business.

“Ima!” Duvi tugged at her sleeve. “Ima, can you play ball with me?”

Dena stood up. “Okay, but just for a few minutes, because we’re going to eat supper soon.”

“What are we having for supper?” he asked loudly. “I hope not Bobby Hanter’s kugel! I don’t like her kugel! I only like yours and Savta Weiss’s!”

“Bobby’s food is very good,” Dena declared quickly, avoiding her mother-in-law’s eyes. The older woman was enjoying watching her grandsons frolic around. “You’re not used to it, that’s all. But a five-year-old boy is big already. You can try to eat things that you’re not so familiar with, and let me tell you what happens; We try and try a new food, and we get used to it, and in the end we see that it can really be very delicious!”

“Like living here,” her mother-in-law suddenly spoke up and said. “You try, you get used to it, and in the end—you see that it’s very delicious.”

“It’s not the ‘living here,’” Dena replied, without thinking. “It’s the fact that life just becomes so completely different…”

BASIC PULLED BRISKET

This melt in the mouth brisket is great to stuff your Pesach blintzes. Serve it over mashed potatoes or stuff a baked potato. Packed with flavor, it will not disappoint.

Ingredients:

2 1/2- 3 lb 2nd cut brisket, scored

1 large onion, cut into half circles

1/2 cup grape juice

1/2 cup dry red wine

1 tsp onion powder (optional)

1 tsp garlic powder (optional)

1 1/2 Tbsp freshly squeezed lemon juice

salt and pepper to taste

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 250°.

2. In a 9x13 pan, place sliced onions.

3. Add the rest of the ingredients, besides the meat and mix well.

4. Place meat in the center of the pan and cover with onions.

5. Cover pan and bake for 6-8 hours. Immediately shred with a fork.

PASTRAMI CHICKEN ROLL UPS

This is the perfect dish for a night meal. Light and flavorful, it’s not another meat main. The almond coating gives the chicken a great toasted nut flavor and the pastrami adds smokiness to the dish.

Ingredients:

1- 1 1/2 lbs thin chicken cutlets

1 egg

salt and pepper to taste

1 cups chopped almonds

1 1/2 cups ground almonds

1 tsp salt

Thinly sliced pastrami, enough for each chicken cutlet

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 350°.

2. In a shallow bowl, add eggs, salt and pepper to taste. Mix to combine. Add chicken cutlets and mix well.

3. In a small bowl, add chopped almonds, ground almonds and salt. Mix well.

4. Coat each chicken cutlet in the nut mixture. Place a pastrami slice over the cutlet, roll up and secure with a toothpick. Place in 9x13 pan.

5. Bake for 20-25 minutes.

GOURMET RIB STEAKS

Rib steaks aren’t the most typical when it comes to serving at a meal. Most people associate rib steaks with a summer BBQ. However, these rib steaks are fit for a king. Falling-off-the-bone deliciousness, these will surely enhance your next meal.

Ingredients:

4 rib steaks

1 large onion, sliced in half circles

2 Tbsp oil

4 Tbsp dry red wine

4 Tbsp grape juice

salt and pepper to taste

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 350°.

2. Place rib steaks on a metal sheet pan.

3. Combine the rest of the ingredients in a small bowl. Add to sheet pan and rub liquids into rib steak.

4. Cover well. Bake for an hour and a half and uncovered for 10 minutes.

Diminishing Pre-Pesach stress begins with knowledge of this basic principle: The Halochos of eating Chometz are very stringent, but the Halochos of OWNING chometz are much less so.

Below are Torah scholars' directives regarding owning chometz and cleaning for Pesach.

(Notes in parenthesis and brackets are explanatory comments. Also, italics and bold are added for emphasis.)

RAV CHAIM PINCHOS SCHEINBERG Zatzal, Rosh Yeshiva of Torah Ohr in Yerushalayim, taught the following:

• If, during the year, chometz is not brought into a place, that place does not have to be cleaned out or checked for chometz.

• The general obligation to check for & get rid of crumbs does not apply if the crumbs are less than the size of a k’zayis [an olive] and are dirty or spoiled enough to deter a person from eating them. (A kzayis is around 1/2 - 1 ounce.)

• The cleaning product (regular household cleanser) must spoil the crumbs (only) slightly, to the extent that people would refrain from eating them.

Rabbi Barclay and Rabbi Jaeger, authors of the Guideline Halacha Series, write that there are two mitzvos connected to the possession of chometz:

• Not to see chometz or find it in one’s possessions (Lo Yeraeh and Lo Yemotzei)

• To dispose of it (Tashbisu)

According to Torah law, it is enough to either get rid of the chometz, or to declare it null and void. Our sages required both for three reasons:

• Our declaration should be sincere.

• We shouldn’t accidentally eat chometz (that’s lying around)

• In order that overlooked chometz be included.

“If the chometz is dirty, then only a piece that is the size of a k’zayis (or larger) must be removed.”

“If the chometz is edible, then even a smaller [than a k’zayis] piece that one may be tempted to eat must be removed.”

“Therefore, when cleaning for Pesach one must remove small pieces of edible chometz and large pieces of inedible chometz.”

Books: Rabbi Barclay and Rabbi Jaeger also write that there is no need to check books, except for books that will be brought to the table. Those books should be either new or well cleaned.

Bentchers used the whole year should not be

used on Pesach; they should be put away with the chometz because they often contain crumbs and are difficult to clean. (Nowhere is it mentioned that the chometz crumbs have to be removed or that the bentchers and zemiros books have to be sold, even though chometz crumbs remain in them. The only rule is that they should be put away so that they are not accidentally brought to the table on Pesach.)

Toys that will be used on Pesach should be cleaned with soapy water and checked. Other toys should be put away. Special toys for Pesach are recommended.

Clothing that won’t be worn on Pesach needs only a quick check. “Since they are not going to be worn, there is no concern that one may eat any crumbs that are there. Small crumbs do not have to be removed since there is no prohibition to own them during Pesach.”

Light switches and door handles should be cleaned when necessary (After we touch them, we may touch Pesach food, and the laws forbidding eating chometz are most stringent, as mentioned. Pens, pencils, combs, and hair brushes which might have some sticky residue might also be in the same category.).

Carpets: Vacuuming a carpet cleans it sufficiently, since any remaining crumbs are not fit for eating.

Toaster: Since a toaster will not be used on Pesach, it is sufficient to remove loose crumbs by shaking the toaster well and putting it away with the chometz utensils. The chometz pots do not have to be scrubbed. Some have the custom to check the pots for chometz

Rabbi Yaakov Zev Smith, a maggid shiur for Irgun Shiurei Torah, explains: “The Gemara says that after bedikas chometz one still needs to annul the chometz. This requirement is not because of crumbs which may be scattered in the house; rather, it is a protection against a big piece of chometz. The reason we do not worry about crumbs is that since they are on the floor they have no importance to us and are “selfannulled” (Pesachim 6b).”

He explains further that the Chayei Adam (119:6) is of the opinion that one must clean crevices of crumbs within hand’s reach. This is not because of the prohibition to see or have chometz in one’s possession – but because we are concerned that one might inadvertently eat them”.1

The Pri Chadash (444-4) and the Igros Moshe (1145) disagree with this stringency.

However, the commonly held custom is to follow the Chayei Adam’s ruling and clean out all easily accessible places where crumbs might be found.

The Chazon Ish (122:8) cites the Gra in stating that crumbs caught between the floorboards do not have to be removed. Even if there are many crumbs that add up collectively to a k’zayis, they are not a problem halachically, because they are dried out and unappetizing.

“The requirement for chometz to actually be unfit for canine consumption (inedible to a dog) only applies to a k’zayis.” (Magen Avraham; Mishnah Berurah).

Rabbi Smith continues: What about chometz that is bigger than a crumb yet smaller than a k’zayis? An example might be a pretzel, or half a cookie. “While small crumbs are insignificant and are automatically nullified, these bits of food (which are identifiable things) are in a category of their own.”

These pieces of chometz (larger than a crumb yet smaller than a k’zayis) should be removed. (Shulchan Aruch Harav; Mishnah Berurah)

Extra effort in cleaning away chometz is part of a heilige minhag. In practice, we give the greatest energy to areas that our Pesach food and our hands will touch/contact on Pesach2 (This helps prevent the possibility of eating any chometz on Pesach. And while this is true, give careful note to the following paragraph.)

This minhag must be practiced according to each person’s strength and energy. And only up to where it does not take away from health, safety, and joy in the Heilige Yom Tov.

Anything written above should not be used by husbands and children as an excuse for not helping make the house clean and shining, as well as kosher for Pesach. It is indeed part of the signature of Pesach to have a home that is extraspecial clean. The wholehearted participation— without criticism—of husband and children, makes a big difference and brings much joy to the Yom Tov.

May we all be zocheh to clean and prepare for the Yom Tov of Pesach without excessive strain or fear, but with anticipation and happiness. And, may our cleaning and preparation find chein Above and help bring the Geulah Shleimah closer.

These veggies are lower in fermentable carbohydrates, which means they're less likely to cause gas and bloating.

But what about fiber? How does it work, and why does it sometimes feel like it's causing more harm than good? Fiber is like nature's broomstick for your digestive system. It adds bulk to your stool, making it easier to pass through your intestines. However, if you're not used to consuming enough fiber, suddenly increasing your intake can lead to discomfort.

Imagine your digestive system as a highway. When

you introduce more fiber, it's like adding more cars to the road. Initially, things might get a little congested, leading to bloating and gas. But as your digestive system adjusts, traffic flows more smoothly, and those uncomfortable symptoms should decrease.

Some vegetables contain higher levels of certain carbohydrates that are harder for your body to digest completely, leading to increased gas and bloating for some individuals. These vegetables often contain compounds like oligosaccharides, which can ferment in the gut and produce gas. Here are some examples of veggies that might be harder to digest and could potentially cause more gas and bloating:

1. Cruciferous vegetables: Broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts and cabbage, are notorious for causing gas due to their high fiber content and specific types of carbohydrates called raffinose and fructans.

2. Legumes: Beans, lentils, chickpeas, and peas contain oligosaccharides, which are carbohydrates that can be difficult for some people to digest fully, leading to gas and bloating.

3. Onions and garlic: These aromatic vegetables contain fructans, a type of carbohydrate that some individuals may have trouble digesting, leading to gas and bloating.

The impact of our words is extremely powerful, it’s important to make sure we only speak positively about each other.

As you wake up on the day of an important school test, you notice a familiar sensation in your stomach, a fluttering feeling called butterflies. This feeling comes up whenever you feel nervous, especially when anticipating an important event. But nervousness is not the only feeling that causes you to experience a physical feeling. Think of the warmth that washes over you when your Bubby or Zaidy offers you a compliment. In such moments, you experience a pleasant sensation, a comforting warmth that comes from within. These physical responses are our body’s way of feeling and expressing the emotions we have. They are signals from Hashem, to help us understand the complex feelings we have, allowing us to go through life with a deeper understanding of ourselves and those around us.

DELVING DEEPER

How can we develop habits that encourage us to speak with kindness?

In this week’s Parsha, we learn about Tzaraas, which is a physical type of sickness. Rather than being caused by germs or cold weather, it came as a consequence of speaking Lashon Hara/speaking negatively about someone. Tzara’as would appear on a person’s skin as a white or pink patch. If these signs appeared, the person had to go to a Kohen to determine if it was indeed Tzaraas. If it was confirmed, the affected person would spend a certain amount of time alone outside the city until the condition went away. While this consequence may seem very long and difficult compared to a simple apology between friends, the Torah comes to teach an important lesson. It emphasizes the importance of making sure to speak with kindness and the need to think carefully before speaking.

Cut up cabbage in chunks until you have about 2 cups worth and put it into the medium bowl.

Drain the water into another bowl and divide it into 3 bowls for each of the colors.

In the last bowl, pour 1 Tbsp of vinegar and watch it turn pink!

Boil 4 cups of water and pour directly over the cabbage.

In the first bowl, just leave the cabbage water to remain purple.

Our kind words have an impact just like the anthocyanin in cabbage, which causes the color change based on the acidity or base of the solution.

Cover with aluminum foil and let the water seep in for 10 minutes.

In the second bowl, add 2 tsp of baking soda and watch it turn blue!
