Providing support services to the children in the community, Beyond’s team of caring and experienced professionals go the extra mile to ensure that a child reaches their academic and social goals in a supportive environment that is tailored to their unique needs.

For Beyond, going above and beyond, means pulling out all the stops to help children achieve their true potential. Beyond has on staff experts who guide the providers on a general basis, as well as on a caseby-case basis. These include experts in reading and kriya, Gemara learning experts, and an on-staff social worker who advises Beyond and its providers in the social and emotional arena.

Beyond opened a state-of-the-art center called “Beyond Education and Activities”—a special project

of Beyond, where children spend the afternoon in a wholesome, growth-oriented environment that helps them soar.

Among the subjects learned at the center are Mishnayos, Kriya, math and reading, but there are also special craft projects to bring extra excitement to the children who attend the program. The center also features a Sunday program for girls where they are taught music and art, in addition to a number of academic subjects.

Beyond makes learning fun, exciting, and engaging as each provider is equipped with a full, hands-on curriculum and the tools to bring it to life so students can absorb and retain more of what they learn. Beyond's team of expert providers knows there is more to teaching than just books. Working on the maxim that learning takes place beyond the books, they don't just teach - they reach, allowing each child to succeed on his own path while providing a positive experience every step of the way.

This past shabbos, I was delighted and pleasantly surprised to see him for the very first time relaxing on the couch while reading a book!

When Mosaic came onto the scene, I was eager to see how the Davis method would be implemented -- and I was not disappointed. The students who joined the program made progress almost immediately. We saw tremendous strides in their reading levels. As a result, their confidence and overall performance improved. Martin realizes the extent of how much this place is under constant surveillance.

He mentions to Michoel Perl that he’d been living in his home, and is nervous when Perl seems to get very upset about it.

Perl and Mike go to Charleston for the planned demonstration, leaving Martin behind in the nearly empty building, trying to think of an escape plan.

CHAPTER SEVENTY SEVEN

Martin got sick of walking up and down the deserted corridor, and went to his room. He needed to get whoever was watching the cameras used to the idea that there were strange behaviors in this room. Maybe he’d get under the blanket now and take something with him, so that at a later time, he’d be able to hide with his suitcase and his phone, without raising too many suspicions.

He walked around the room and opened the door to the bathroom. He walked in, came out, opened the narrow closet behind the door, closed it, opened it again, and took his brush off the top shelf. Good, an excellent item. Now the blanket. In no time he was seated in the middle of the room, with his legs folded under a little mound. He shook himself mightily a few times, making the mound rock back and forth. Someone knocked on his head. “Hello, are you alright in there, Josef?”

“Not especially,” he announced in a muffled voice from inside. “But I’m trying to find some peace.”

“Peace from what?”

“From my exhausting life in this world.”

It was a rather unnerving remark, especially when said by a schizophrenic person. Martin knew that, and he wasn’t surprised when the blanket was tugged off his head at once. Rob, the bespectacled nurse who had welcomed him at the airport, was studying him with searching eyes.

“I didn’t mean I’m going to commit suicide,” Martin said, sounding bored, as he tugged the blanket back over his head. “I just want some quiet.”

“What are you holding there?”

Martin stuck his hand out and showed him. “My brush.”

“Why do you need a brush now? Your hair doesn’t look messed up.”

“Don’t worry, there’s no cyanide in it.”

Rob took the brush, apparently to study it from all sides.

“Hey, give it back to me!”

“In one minute. Where’s this brush from?”

“I bought it before I came here.”

“Where?”

“In a store near my house. In Haifa.”

“And why do you need it under the blanket?”

“I like remembering Haifa.”

“Do you miss it sometimes?”

“Yes.” He stuck his hand out of the blanket, and after a moment’s hesitation, the nurse put the brush into his hand. Martin curled himself back up and continued his

monotonous rocking.

“What are you doing there?” Rob asked, apparently still too nervous to leave the room.

“I’m…” Martin thought about Yosef, back in Haifa. What would he have answered if he was sitting here himself and rocking back and forth? “I…I’m praying.” ***

“There are Jews here in Charleston, certainly,” Mike said to Michoel as they walked calmly down the middle of the street. Traffic had apparently stopped in their honor, and Michoel saw people standing on the sidewalks and staring at them with a mixture of amusement and disgust. The street was not a main road, but it was rather wide, and Michoel tried to remember if he’d ever visited this city before. Had he ever been in South Carolina?

The two of them were walking with a group that was chanting, “Nature is your best doctor—don’t harm yourself.” Michoel found himself rather amused by the whole situation. He was wearing, like all of them, a thick yellow shirt with the logo of the institution on it, but aside for the logo, which included two large, jagged leaves in a framed circle, there wasn’t a single word that gave away the fact that it was a hospital or a rehabilitation center of any kind. The shirts were ugly. They were strangely wide and unfitted; no matter how you looked at them, they were totally unimpressive. Michoel had no idea why the Skulholts chose to promote their method in such an unattractive way. With the screamers drowning them out, Michoel and Mike allowed themselves to talk. “Jews came here a long time ago,” Mike continued, rubbing his shoulder, which had been banged by an overactive patient who had run past him. “The last time we went out to the city, they let me visit the oldest Orthodox synagogue in the southern United States, which is here. It’s called Brith Shalom Beth Israel. It was established in the first half of the nineteenth century, if I’m not mistaken.”

Michoel shook his head. “I don’t know if I’ve ever heard of it. I was born on the East Coast of America, in New York, but I have traveled around a lot, and still I don’t remember hearing anything about this shul. Is it Ashkenazic?”

“Yes.”

The muscles in Michoel’s hands stiffened. “Do you think they’ll let me pop in there to daven?”

Mike hesitated. “I doubt it. They keep an eye on the newbies, and on you especially.” He looked at the back of the doctor, who was walking at the front of the group. Skulholt didn’t even turn around once to make sure everyone was chanting in unison as expected.

“Why is that?”

Mike frowned. “I really don’t know.”

“The truth is…” Michoel lowered his tone to a whisper. “I could have escaped by now. Why did I need the whole mess with Yosef…?”

“The fake Yosef.” Only Mike’s lips were moving; they were both being very cautious. “But I don’t think you could have escaped. There is more surveillance here than you think.”

Perl ignored Mike’s first few words. “Really? I see only three staff members here.”

“And they aren’t marching next to us. And we’re still whispering like two rabbits…because it’s clear to you that there are enough people here who will be loyal enough to the Skulholts’ methods to run after you.”

“But the minute I manage to get to some sane civilian and ask for help, and people on the outside get involved, won’t it help?”

“Trust the people here to be prepared for such actions,” Mike said bitterly. “I already told you: within seconds, Dr. Jerry will be able to get the people to side with him, not you. Did you see what we look like in these shirts? Not like people who arouse much trust.”

“And this is how they think they can attract new patients?”

“Yes. Although among the Charleston locals, they don’t have much of a chance, after the ‘second Kristallnacht’ that they caused here half a year ago… No one will forget the horrific images of the shattered lobby at the Caroline Hotel, or of the bloody face of that policeman who became the hero of the night, because he was the one who was able to stop them.” He sighed. “They draw their ‘clients’ from high schools filled with frustrated youths, like me, for example, or from certain hospitals. Hey, we just happen to be talking about him, and there he is!”

“Who?”

“Ernie, the guy who goes around to hospitals and looks for suitable people…”

“Where is he?”

“Turn quietly to your left, because he’s an edgy creature. I don’t think he’s done yet with the trial from that night, but maybe he was able to prove that he didn’t actually do anything; that it was the people who suddenly lost control of themselves. That’s what they were saying then.”

“How do you know about this trial and everything?” Michoel strained his eyes, not able to decide which of the many figures walking to his left was the one Mike was referring to. “They told you all the details?”

“No, I was still on the outside then.” Mike smiled bitterly. “And I avidly read every piece of news about the trial. I admired them so much back then… Disgusting people, they all turned out to be, one by one. Believe me.”

“Is this all because they don’t let you meet your sister?” “No, it’s all because I realized that they are not interested in me one iota; it’s all about them and their money. So, did you see him?”

“I can’t tell which person you’re talking about.”

“The tall, blond guy walking on the edge of the group. He’s also wearing a yellow shirt, like the rest of us. Dr. Skulholt is ignoring him; he probably doesn’t want to show in public that they have a close connection. There, the one who the journalist is coming over to now. They probably want to interview him about the trial and the whole mess.”

Michoel observed the tall man barking at the journalist: “I don’t answer questions. No!”

He sensed that he could not stand him, although he had no idea why. He didn’t trust Dr. Jerry and his suspicious intentions either, but he didn’t feel such a tremendous repulsion toward him like he did with this Ernie. The other patients walking around in the hospital were also more or less okay, and he even felt somewhat friendly toward most of them. But this man…

It wasn’t just a dislike. Michoel felt that if he would be the journalist standing there now, he would have literally attacked the tall, blond young man.

His hands balled into fists, and he felt his face reddening. He felt something stronger than himself at play. Maybe something was happening in his brain. Maybe something had happened, and that was the problem. He had the most intense desire to punch the guy, to shake him and shout at him. But…violence? Him, Michoel Perl? What was with him?!

He took a deep breath, trying to calm himself. “I hate him!” he suddenly said, unable to completely control his vocal cords. Two of the men marching in front of him turned around and gaped at him in surprise, but he paid them no heed. “I hate him—do you hear me, Yosef?!”

“I’m not Yosef,” someone said at his side. “I’m Mike. Who do you hate?”

“That man! He…he…” Michoel couldn’t think straight. Something was happening to him. He felt blinded. What was that he was seeing—headlights of a bus? Had there been a collision? Was this the accident the psychiatrist had told him about? Maybe a sharp metal object had just struck him in the head? Who was doing this to him? Mike? Yosef who wasn’t Yosef?

He couldn’t fall apart now. People could not hear that he wanted to escape and that the Canadian youth who had come and said that he was Yosef had really come to rescue him. He had to keep the secrets. But…ow, the metal hurt! Yes, in the back of his head!

“I can’t… No…!” he groaned quietly. He felt someone gently grasping his arm and trying to whisper something to him. The world spun for a moment, with flashes of color. It stopped suddenly and then began to spin again. He sighed and then, without warning, crumpled down onto the road, where he had been standing a moment earlier. Everything went black.

Through the blackness, he could hear screaming: “Help! Perl collapsed! Move aside—don’t trample him! Help!”

MAPLE BOURBON BRISKET

Ingredients:

3 tablespoons oil

3 lb. brisket

Set it and forget it. This awesome fall-inspired crockpot brisket makes the perfect main for a Yom Tov Sueda or Chol Homoed dinner.

Salt and pepper to taste, for seasoning meat

2 tablespoons spicy brown mustard, optional

1 large white onion, chopped

Maple Bourbon Sauce:

2-3 garlic cloves, crushed

½ cup ketchup

1 tablespoon tomato paste

½ cup dark brown sugar

3 tablespoons maple syrup or honey

¼ cup bourbon or whisky

½ teaspoon smoked paprika

1 tablespoon paprika

1 teaspoon salt

1 tablespoon freshly ground black pepper

2 cups chicken stock (or 1 ½ cups boiling water mixed with ½ teaspoon chicken soup mix)

Directions:

1. Sprinkle salt and pepper on both sides of the brisket.

2. Heat oil in a large frying pan over medium-high heat. Brown the brisket on all sides to seal in the juices.

3. Place the brisket in the crock pot and smear with spicy brown mustard. Set aside.

4. In the same frying pan (with the remaining meat-infused oil), saute the sliced onions until translucent.

5. While the onions are cooking, whisk all ingredients for the Maple Bourbon Sauce in a medium bowl. Pour the sauce into the pan and bring the mixture to a boil. Turn heat to low and reduce sauce for 15-20 minutes.

6. Pour the sauce over the brisket in the crock pot, and turn the crock pot to high temperature. Let cook for approximately 4-5 hours, or on low temperature for 6-8 hours.

7. Remove the brisket from the crock pot and using 2 forks, pull the meat apart into shreds. Return the shredded beef to the crock pot and mix with sauce. Set the crock pot to warm and serve in mini baguettes with toppings of your choice.

TIP: You can also bake this for 7-8 hours at 275°.

CORNED BEEF CABBAGE NOODLES

Enjoy the all-time classic, with a new, modern and delicious twist. Kid and adult approved.

Ingredients:

16 oz. bag shredded white cabbage

⅓ cup oil

1 ½ teaspoons salt

3 tablespoons white sugar or brown sugar

¼ teaspoon freshly ground pepper

6 oz. package corned beef, sliced into thin strips

2 cloves crushed garlic

12 oz. bag bow tie or square noodles, cooked and drained

Directions:

1. In a medium pan, heat the oil over low heat. Add the cabbage, salt, sugar, and black pepper, and saute for 50 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add the corned beef strips and garlic to the pan, and cook for an additional 10 minutes.

2. Add the cooked noodles to the pan and mix thoroughly. Cook for an additional 5 minutes, until fully reheated. Serve.

VIBRANT CRUNCHY CABBAGE SALAD WITH ASIAN DRESSING

A well-composed salad needs the right blend of soft & crunchy, sweet and savory. This vibrant salad hits just the spot with an awesome blend of components and of-course beautiful (really easy!) presentation.

Salad

1 (16 oz.) bag coleslaw mix

1 cup daikon cress sprouts

2 handfuls of snap peas or green beans, sliced

5-6 small red radishes, cut into matchsticks

½ red onion, thinly sliced

4-5 scallions, thinly sliced

1 pkg corned beef or pastrami, sliced into small chunks

½ cup dried cranberries (optional)

Dressing:

¾ cup mayonnaise

2 tablespoons soy sauce

1 tablespoon toasted sesame oil

2 tablespoons lemon juice

3 tablespoons maple syrup

1 clove garlic, crushed

½ teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon freshly cracked black pepper

1 package ramen noodles

Black sesame seeds, for garnish

Directions:

1. Combine dressing ingredients in a container and whisk or shake well to combine. Refrigerate until ready to use.

2. Preheat oven to 350°. Break up the ramen noodles into a flat layer on a baking sheet and bake for 10-12 minutes, until toasted.

3. In a large serving platter arrange all the salad components (try to follow a pattern, but don’t stress- it’ll look beautiful either way). Top with the toasted ramen noodles and black sesame seeds. Serve with dressing on the side.

TIP: Prep the ingredients in advance and easily toss together before a Yom Tov Sueda.

HOW TO MAKE A SALAD WHEN YOU THINK THERE'S NOTHING IN THE HOUSE

GATHER THE GOODS:

FIRST STOP: THE FRIDGE:

What are you actually working with?

◆ Soft tomatoes? Roast it with garlic, basil, salt, olive oil for 15 minutes

◆ Root vegetables from leftover soup ingredients? Mandoline or shred and use as a salad base instead of lettuce. Create a blend. Radishes, carrots, beets.

◆ Speaking of soup, zuchinni is so delicious raw and roasted sweet potatoes are such a lovely salad topping.

◆ Don’t forget the fruit drawer! And for our purposes, the harder, the better. That mango that isn’t ripe on time? Cut it into matchsticks, even while it’s a pale yellow. Same for peaches and plums. Apples are a great option.

◆ Don’t forget to look out for the little things that can pack a big punch as a final garnish: I like to make a pesto/ chimichurri by chopping up fresh garlic, scallions, onions, wilting herbs or spinach, jalapenos- whatever’s softening in the corner of your fridge. It makes a delightful topping.

◆ Finally, traditional salads tend to have a base and toppings, but make it your own! Treat it like a slaw, use whatever amount of whatever you have of whatever you like.

NEXT, YOUR PANTRY:

◆ Canned veggies are ONLY for a rainy day, and this is a rainy day. Drain the baby corn, corn kernels, hearts of palm, even a can of beans. Think pickles, olives. Drain and rinse (don’t skip, there’s a strange taste) a can of mushrooms and heat it with some pepper and pretend you’re serving fresh roasted mushrooms. Use chickpeas in the same way.

◆ Grains can be a great addition – quinoa, spaghetti, couscous

◆ Check out your nuts selection: Chop up dried mango, apricots. Use craisins. Sunflower seeds, almonds, walnuts- theyre great as is for an added crunch, but if you break them into pieces, pour some honey, season with smokey, spicey flavors, and place in a low temperature oven or pan for a few minutes, you’re in for a treat.

◆ Traditional croutons or chips work as well.

REMEMBER:

◆ Don’t be afraid to play. Try it once.

◆ Color matters, you eat with your eyes first, nature’s beautiful

QMy kids love fruit juice. I understand that juices are not the healthiest, but can you explain why? After all, they are made from fruits, which are super healthy and natural. Take grape juice for example. It is made from grapes, why is this not a smart juice beverage? Do I completely need to eliminate it from their diets?

AGrapes, the foundation of grape juice, are naturally sweet, and that sweetness is translated into the juice through the crushing and processing of the fruit. One of the major concerns with grape juice consumption is its high sugar content. To put it into perspective, a cup of grape juice can contain approximately 36 grams of sugar, which equates to a staggering 9 teaspoons of sugar. This concentrated dose of sugar can lead to rapid spikes in blood sugar levels, potentially contributing to issues like insulin resistance and weight gain over time.

The same would be true for orange juice and apple juice. While both grape juice, orange juice, and apple juice have their merits, they share a common pitfall: their sugar content. Orange juice contains around 21 grams of sugar per cup, or roughly 5 teaspoons. Despite being

perceived as a healthier option due to its vitamin C content, orange juice's sugar content can also pose concerns for those watching their sugar intake. These high sugar levels can lead to energy crashes, cravings, and an increased risk of dental cavities. Excessive sugar consumption is linked to a range of health issues, including obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular problems, and dental decay. Overconsumption of sugary beverages like grape juice and orange juice can contribute to weight gain and obesity, as these beverages provide empty calories without the satiety of fiber or other nutrients found in whole fruits. Additionally, the rapid spike in blood sugar levels followed by a subsequent crash can leave you feeling fatigued and irritable. Also,

when you are drinking fruit juice, you are not getting any fiber along with it, such as the peel and pulp, which leads to a greater uptick in your blood sugar levels. While the craving for fruit juice's natural sweetness is undeniable, it's important to approach consumption with moderation in mind. Opting for whole grapes or fruits over juice can provide you with the benefits of dietary fiber, antioxidants, and nutrients without the sugar overload. If your kids insist on drinking fruit juices daily, consider diluting them with water or opting for smaller servings to manage their sugar intake. Also, having a pitcher with flavored water around for the kids will help them reach for water before juice. Try adding some berries or lemon to your pitcher. It looks pretty, tastes refreshing and is way better for your kids.

Cherry Hill Yeshiva Celebrates Chanukas Habayis

Uniting Rebbeim, Talmidim, Alumni, and Community

On Sunday, September 8th, Foxman Torah Institute (FTI) marked the beginning of a new era, with hundreds gathering to inaugurate the new Phase 1 FTI Yeshiva Building, a 10,000 sq. ft. residential building.

In a remarkable display of kiddush sheim shomayim and unity, the Torah community of Cherry Hill came together as Rebbeim, Talmidim and Parents, Alumni, and community members gathered to take part in an unforgettable Chanukas Habayis that left everyone inspired and energized.

The yeshiva was established over 20 years ago, and consists of a mesivta and beis medrash, with almost 100 talmidim enrolled this year, its largest crowd ever. Talmidim in the high school and beis medrash come not only from the local community, but also from cities around the region and country.

Its alumni have gone on to become Rebbeim, professionals, and businessmen, and many have begun to settle in Cherry Hill to remain close to the Yeshiva and their Rebbeim. FTI has also transformed the Cherry Hill community into a serious makom Torah, attracting many new families, and recently more mosdos haTorah, to the area.

FTI is well known among mechanchim as having very talented and dedicated Rebbeim who really understand chinuch and today’s talmidim. Despite the significant growth the yeshiva has enjoyed, the hallmark of FTI remains the close connection between Rebbe and talmid; this element contributes greatly to the uniqueness and flavor of the yeshiva.

Rebbeim have a sincere interest in the development of each talmid, and really respect and connect to each talmid. The talmidim feel it, appreciate it, and respond beautifully. In a complex and challenging chinuch world, the combination of spirited Torah learning, and a Torah-infused, serious, yet enjoyable atmosphere, provides a unique total chinuch experience.

After hearing divrei bracha, hoda’ah le’Hashem for all the nissim involved in the building process, and divrei hisorirus and chizuk from the Roshei Yeshiva, everyone excitedly gathered around for the ribbon cutting, followed by hanging of the first mezuza. R’ Joey Newcomb then led the oilam in spirited song and music prompting, the highlight of the day for many, the talmidim dancing with their Rebbeim with incredible simcha over their new makom Torah.

As the event drew to a close, the sense of unity and pride in the Yeshiva was palpable. It was more than just a Chanukas Habayis; it was a celebration of the Torah that had previously been learned together in the yeshiva, as well as the future Torah learning that will be enabled in this building IMY”H. The celebration may have ended, but if anyone were to walk through the halls of yeshiva and witness the remarkable growth and development happening among each and every Talmid, it would serve as an undeniable testament to the need for continued expansion and investment in FTI.

B”H, the next phase has already begun, which will add another 37,000 sq ft, and house a new beis medrash, dining room, gym, classrooms, offices, student recreation areas, and more.

The Dubno Magid met a blind widower walking with his son in the streets of Vilna. The towns people didn’t pay much attention to them, but the Dubno Magid greeted them, and spoke with them. They told him about their great poverty, how their home wasn’t heated, and that they didn’t have food. The Dubno Magid took them into his home so they could warm up and eat dinner. He noticed that the son was very smart, so he hired a Melamed to learn with him.

From that day on they became part of the Dubno Magid’s household. Even after the blind father was Niftar, the Dubno Magid continued paying for the child’s tutor. This child became Reb Shlomo Kluger, one of the Gedolei Hador, whose Torah illuminates the world until today.

The Chofetz Chaim would say: Many people saw the blind pauper with his son walking around the streets of Vilna. They shook their heads, said ‘nebach! What a rachmanus!’ and that’s about all. But the Dubno Magid took action. He showed concern, fed them, and paid for a tutor for the child. If the Dubno Magid hadn’t helped them out, we would’ve lost a Gadol B’Yisrael. Let’s learn from this to grasp opportunities to do Chesed, because you can never know what you will accomplish…

face as she cooed to the baby, so I relaxed. The men arrived home in a flurry of arbaah minim and we were ready to start the seudah.

“Rivky, you sure are lucky that you have Devora,” Babby said as I helped her serve the fish. “She even put up the short ribs for Yom Tov! I’m sure all the boys are going to really enjoy it.”

I hoped so. My two youngest uncles, aged 19 and 17, had the formidable appetite yeshivah bachurim were known for. And my younger brothers, 13 and 15 each, were following in their footsteps. There was a table full of people to feed, and I could only hope that I’d followed Babby’s directions accurately.

Babby put the short ribs on a platter, oohing and aahing over its gorgeous presentation. I swallowed. It looked pretty, but would it taste good?

My first inkling that something was wrong came pretty fast.

“Umm, Devora, can you bring a real knife? This plastic thing won’t work on short ribs.”

I dutifully brought the silverware, holding my breath while everyone cut into their meat portions. I couldn’t figure out what their expressions were all about as they cut their first pieces.

“Um, mine is a little pink,” my little brother Kalman said, very graciously. “Is there a better piece on the platter?”

“Sha,” Shia hissed, as he tried to unsuccessfully chew his meat, which was somewhat pink in the middle as well.

One by one, the plates of short rib got pushed away as everyone realized that it wasn’t fully cooked.

I was mortified. Couldn’t I handle cooking a little meat? I thought I’d cooked it long enough, although Babby had told me it cooked for far less time than brisket.

“There’s plenty of deli roll,” my mother said as the boys looked morosely at the table.

That was too much for me. I fled to my bedroom, humiliated, while Babby quietly took the short ribs to the kitchen to throw them in the garbage. I didn’t actually dissolve in tears, even though I felt like doing it. Instead, I just curled up in a ball and let a few tears run down my cheeks.

My mother was so perfect. All the food she cooked tasted delicious, even after being frozen, and when she did laundry or cleaned up,

everything sparkled. Whatever I did, I managed to flop.

After a few minutes, I pulled myself together, set my jaw, and went to help finish serving.

“Hey, come on, Devora.”

My mother was standing in the kitchen, waiting for me.

“There’s plenty to eat besides the meat, don’t worry,” she soothed in a soft voice. “No one’s going to go hungry.”

“I know, but why do I always have to mess up so badly?” I asked in misery, and suddenly I was telling my mother all about the story behind the short ribs and the bird on the porch. I could tell she was trying very hard not to giggle as I described it to her, although she let herself smirk.

“It’s totally normal,” she said. “Do you think I was always such a great cook?”

I looked at my mother in incomprehension. Was she saying that she hadn’t always been so perfect?

“When I first got married, I hosted Bubby and Zeidy Feder for Shabbos Hagadol. It was the first time I was making a whole Shabbos, and my in-laws were coming too. You can imagine the pressure I had.”

Well, normally, I wouldn’t have been able to imagine it. But just right then, I could really understand it.

“Well, guess what? The cholent burned so badly that Shabbos that there was not a bean left to serve,” my mother said, and she was still smiling.

“I made apple kugel, but it came out raw, and my dessert looked pretty, but didn’t taste very good. I’m pretty sure everyone went home hungry.”

“You weren’t embarrassed?”

“Of course, I was,” my mother said easily. “But nobody’s perfect, and life isn’t perfect. Burned cholent and raw meat is the least of the imperfection.” She paused.

“Really, that’s what Sukkos is all about. A sukkah’s not supposed to be perfect. It’s allowed to have just three walls, and it has to have a leaky roof. That’s the mitzvah, and it’s a Yom Tov, because Hashem loves us even when we aren’t perfect.”

I smiled. Really, what was raw meat in the scheme of things? Just a good reminder of everything my mother had just said.

I could handle that. •

Actually, please come home and chase the bird away, because otherwise I’m going to have to stay locked in the study until you come home.”

I could hear my father still chuckling on the other end of the line, although he reassured me that he was on his way.

But by the time my father came home and walked out onto the porch brandishing a broomstick, the bird had flown away.

“Is this the meat you wanted to make for Yom Tov?” my father asked, mirth still in his voice as he brought in the package of meat. “Gross!” I yelped.

“Well, I actually see that he had a pretty hard time poking through the plastic,” my father said as he examined the meat. “But in some places he got through and managed to pick off a piece.”

“Tatty,” I begged, covering my eyes and ears, “could you please throw it out?”

“Why, don’t you think all the kids will want to have a look at the meat that the bird ate?” my father said teasingly. “Okay, no problem.” He dropped the meat roast into the garbage can with a plunk.

“But now what should I do?” I wailed as I removed my hands from my eyes and ears. “The kids’ busses are coming already and we don’t even have a raw meat roast in the house, forget about cooked meat for Yom Tov!”

“It’s okay,” my father soothed. “I’ll go buy new meat right now.”

He picked up his car keys and turned to go. “In any case, I was thinking of buying a nicer cut of meat, for such a big simcha and l’kavod Yom Tov.”

“But then Mommy will know!” I protested, scandalized. “Please don’t tell Mommy what I did! I’ll be mortified!”

My father paused. “Don’t worry, I’ll handle it,” he said. “I’ll tell Mommy that I decided to surprise her and buy short ribs for Yom Tov instead, and we’ll put the brisket away for another time. Meanwhile, I’ll buy short ribs and also brisket, to keep in the freezer.”

“Okay,” I said. Short ribs sounded even more daunting to prepare than brisket, but I figured that meat was meat. Surely my mother’s instructions would be fine for short ribs too. Anyway, there was no way I was going to admit to my father how nervous I was to prepare the meat for Yom Tov.

But when my father arrived home with the packages of short ribs, I faltered. It didn’t look anything like the briskets my mother made. It probably wouldn’t make sense to follow the same recipe.

Instead, I swallowed my pride and called Babby.

“Oooh, hello, Devorala,” my grandmother said. “We can’t wait to come for Yom Tov! Shia’s already shlepping the suitcases.”

I felt a pang. Yom Tov was coming in just two days.

“Babby,” I said hesitantly, “my father bought short ribs for Yom Tov, and I’m not sure how to make it.”

“And you don’t want to disturb your mother, right?” Babby asked approvingly. “I’ll tell you exactly what to do, mammele.”

I dutifully wrote down yet another set of instructions, looking doubtfully at the bones sticking out of the short rib pieces as I listened to Babby’s detailed directions.

I hoped I could handle this after all. ***

The first day of Yom Tov dawned cool and crisp, the most perfectly idyllic kind of weather for sitting in the sukkah and feeling like fall.

Mommy brought the newborn down dressed in her cutest outfit, adorned with a bracelet on each hand and soft pink booties to match.

“Mommy, can I hold her? Can I hold her?” All my siblings vied for a chance to hold the baby, who spent the majority of the time locked in my parents’ bedroom.

Babby kvelled as she watched Mommy holding the new baby, sitting on her armchair in the sukkah like a queen.

“I hope it’s not too cold for the baby,” she fussed, adding an extra blanket to the wrap that baby was snuggled in.

“What a beautifully set table!” Mommy exclaimed. “Thanks, Devora. I knew I could count on you.”

I smiled. I hoped my mother hadn’t noticed the slightly grayish collars on my little brother’s white shirt, which somehow hadn’t come out sparkling white the way it did when my mother washed it. And I hoped she didn’t notice the slight mismatch of the paper goods I had bought. Mommy was usually a perfectionist.

I didn’t see any trace of concern on Mommy’s

"So, do you want to write down the instructions for the meat? It’s in the bottom freezer drawer. First, let it defrost…”

I pressed the phone to my ear and wrote furiously, taking down every word my mother said. My whole reputation depended on this meat, after all.

“Thanks a million, Devora,” My mother repeated, her voice sounding drowsy as she completed her instructions. “I think I’m going to rest now. Bye.” I said goodbye and hung up, looking at the phone nervously. How hard could this be, right? ***

So first, I defrosted the meat, because that was what my mother said to do. I transferred the cuts from the freezer to the fridge, then ran out of the house to do some Yom Tov shopping.

It was really wonderful to have such an organized mother, I thought as I walked briskly down the street. All I had to do was follow the carefully updated lists my mother had left behind. I squinted in the bright sun beating overhead, trying to make out what my next stop was supposed to be.

As I checked off the errands on my list, I thought about my most major task of the day - preparing the Yom Tov meat. I hoped I wasn’t defrosting the meat for too long. One second. Didn’t meat spoil if it was left defrosting for too long?

Yes, I definitely remembered hearing my mother say something like that. I panicked and quickly paid for the clips and scrunchies I’d gathered in the hosiery store. I’d better get home before it was too late and all the meat would be ruined. I walked home as quickly as I could, and ran up the stairs, flinging open the doors of the fridge. I touched the meat tentatively. It was still icecold.

I relaxed. Okay, so obviously it didn’t take so fast to defrost meat. Maybe I would take it out of the fridge, because I really wanted to make the meat already, before my sibs arrived home from school.

Leaving the meat to continue defrosting on the counter, I went to the laundry room. My mother had left exact instructions here too, which was important because I’d never done any laundry besides for in camp (and we won’t discuss how that worked out.)

I scrubbed my little brother’s white shirt dutifully as my mother had specified, and threw in the

rest of the white load to wash. There. The meat was probably defrosted already, I figured, so I flew down the steps to check on it. The outside of the roast definitely felt mushy already (I tried not to gag) but if I pressed, I could tell that the inside was still frozen solid.

It was getting late, and I still hadn’t made any headway with the meat. I looked around me for inspiration, when I noticed the porch door right off the kitchen. Bingo! It was a boiling hot day. Surely, if I put the meat in the sun on the porch, it would defrost really quickly.

I gently placed the meat in a pan on the patio table.

Then I went back into the kitchen. ***

I don’t think you want to picture the scene that greeted me when I next stepped onto the porch. “Aaaggh!!!” I screamed.

I ran back into the house and cowered in my father’s study, my breath coming in gasps.

Frantically, I reached for a phone, about to call my mother. Then I stopped.

My mother had said she was going to rest. I wasn’t going to wake her up.

Not even if there was a HUGE black bird on my porch, picking away at my meat!!

I gagged again, and held a hand to my heart. My heart was racing so fast I hoped it wasn’t dangerous. Yikes! Did I remember to close the porch door behind me?

Was that awful disgusting terrifying black bird in my house already?!

My heart in my throat, I called my father. He’d gone to work today after making sure that everything was under control, but he had just had a baby. Surely it was okay if I called him in such an emergency.

“Tatty,” I panted breathlessly, “you don’t know what just happened!”

My story came out in a jumble, which my father had a hard time understanding.

“You put the meat on the porch? To defrost in the sun? And now, there’s a bird eating it?” my father sounded bewildered.

“Yes!” I said emphatically. “A huge, humongous, disgusting black bird. Ewwww!”

My father burst out laughing.

“Ta!!” I protested, scandalized. “I’m serious! You can totally come home and check it out!

Imperfectly Delicious

“It’ll be fine, Ma. How hard can it be to make just the meat?” I asked rhetorically, misplaced overconfidence in my voice. So I’d never cooked a blessed thing before in all my 18 years. I could totally handle cooking some meat for Yom Tov.

“You’re the best, Devora,” my mother gushed, sounding like her typical postpartum self – weak, but on an emotional high. “I really want it to be ready before Babby and Zeidy come with Shia and Mordche. Babby can do the little things, but I wanted the meat to be finished before.”

“Oh, Babby and Zeidy are going to be coming still?” I asked, my confidence developing a slight crack. My ever-efficient mother had frozen all of the Yom Tov food weeks ago, in case she’d be out of commission. This brand-new baby sister of mine had arrived just a little early, so that my mother hadn’t had a chance to quite finish up every last thing. Luckily, we had reinforcements in the form of my grandmother coming for Yom Tov.

But knowing that the meat I cooked was going to feed my discerning grandparents and uncles made me feel a little wavery.

“Of course, they’re still coming!” my mother said. “There’s no way we can go to them, is there!” she chuckled.

Okay. I swallowed. I could totally do this.

Cut out the lion. Save for later.

Take the page with the Maroon lines. Be careful not to cut into the edge.

Cut the page along the black line. Fold in half (there is a light grey line to guide you.)

Cut on black lines like “slices”. Be careful not to cut all the way through it and leave the edge attached.

Next, cut out the Gold strips. Now, thread the strips into the maroon page that you have sliced, by weaving under and over.

If you started the rst strip under and then over, the next strip-do over and then under to create the checkerboard e ect.

Do this until all Gold strips have been weaved.

Glue the edges so the strips dont slip out. Glue the Lion on top of the woven page.

It's Erev Sukkos on a Friday, and Yidden are rushing with their final preparations for Yom Tov. The streets of Yerushalayim are bustling. Some are finishing their little sukkahs, while others are preparing their lulavim. You can feel the excitement radiate as the fast-approaching Chag gets closer.

As the sun gracefully descends, Klal Yisroel harmoniously make their way to the majestic Bais Hamikdash. Holding tightly onto their splendid lulav bags embroidered with honor, they deliver their precious packages so they'll be ready for this big Mitzva right after Shabbos.
