Many menhalim, mechanchim and parents have brought to our attention the reality, that our bocherim go around to the houses on this holy day of Purim for the holy mitzvah of collecting Tzedaka, which our Gedolim have already brought out the great Zchus of being mezaka es harabim in this great mitzvah, and the yeshivahs greatly rely on this for the whole year. However, over the past few years, the Yetzer hara has found his way into our midst and greatly increased the nisyones, especially in the areas of Kedusha and Shmiras Einayim to which the tzedaka collectors are exposed. Furthermore, at Beis Yakov- these are the women-there are those who allow themselves to relax the boundaries of modesty, which is not their way all year round. At times this croses the threshold of pritzus rc’’l.

The reality proved that many terrible michsholes came from the lack of attention paid to this matter. For in the areas intended for receiving the Kahal and the bochurim collecting Tzedaka, there are women walking around, and in times of joy the Yetzer Hara is most prevalent.

In light of the Hisorerus of the previous year through the call of our Rabbanim shlit’’a, we come again to be mechazek this important matter.

1) So, I turn to the choshuva Balay Batim, to give thought to this matter and to arrange that when the Bochurim come for Tzedaka, there should not be found any women in the room at all. They should publicize the specific times for men to come to collect which their families will not be present.

2) And also, with a special request to the choshuva Balay Batim that since there are many Bochurim who refrain from entering homes on the day of Purim due to the aforementioned concerns, it is therefore crucial to greatly increase the donation amounts given in Shul so as not to decrease from the Hachzakas Hatorah.

3) The choshuva Bochurim 'יחיש, should be careful not to enter any home where there might be women present in the room.

4) It is of great importance that the mechanchos of our schools teach the choshuva Bnos Yisroel the importance of strengthening themselves in the area of Tznius, to be mekayem ‘‘Kol Kevudah Bas Melech Penima’’, not to be found in the presence of men, and the severity of the issur to be machshil Bochurim and men in this matter.

And certainly, by keeping the boundaries of holiness and modesty, the Shechina will dwell in our midst and we will not lack anything spiritually and physically, and we will be zoche to simchas Purim in truth and completeness, and mechi’as Amalek at the coming of Moshiach BB’’A.

Recap: Mrs. Gordon offers to have Bruchi and Perry stay in her office while their father’s bail hearing takes place.

Mrs. Kleinberg and Bruchi are up all night, tense and fearful as they await the bail hearing the next morning.

CHAPTER 24

The atmosphere in the eighth-grade classroom was somber, the girls speaking in hushed tones as if afraid that their friend’s father’s arrest meant the police were after them as well.

Zlaty, Bruchi’s best friend, had suspiciously red eyes, as if she’d either been up all night or spent a couple of hours crying. Or both.

She’d tried to call Bruchi, to hear what was going on, but Bruchi hadn’t answered any of her phone calls. Like her mother, Bruchi was determined to close herself off from the world until she could be proud to face it once more.

Meanwhile, that left her friends feeling rejected.

“My father said that they’re going to decide if they should let him out on bail or not today,” Gitty told Zlaty in a low voice.

“I know, I heard already,” Zlaty said irritably. “We have to ask Mrs. Tabak if we can have the morning off to say Tehillim for it.”

Gitty and Shana Malky nodded, faces solemn. As Bruchi’s closest friends, it was up to them to do whatever they could for Bruchi’s father.

Most of the groups of girls in the classroom were discussing the shocking arrest with deep sympathy for Bruchi.

But secretly, some of the girls couldn’t help but feel vindicated.

So high-and-mighty Bruchi had been taken down a couple of notches. So she would realize that the world didn’t belong to her. Of course, they felt bad for her, but they didn’t think it was so terrible for her to understand that she wasn’t in charge of the universe.

Nobody would voice that sentiment, but the subtle undercurrent was definitely there in the classroom.

“Do you think Bruchi’s going to come to school today?” Another eighth-grader, Leah’le, wondered aloud to her friends.

“Nah, of course not,” her friend Sara Miriam answered confidently. “She’s for sure going to go see her father in jail.”

You couldn’t mistake the slightest sense of satisfaction at the edge of Sara Miriam’s voice. Leah’le looked at her sharply.

But could she truly blame her?

“Really?” Mrs. Tabak asked from across the table where she’d been communing with her coffee. “Right now?”

“It’s supposed to be 9 o’clock,” Layala asserted, her gaze straying to the clock on the wall across from her.

Just then, the bell rang. It was time for class.

Mrs. Tabak finished the rest of her coffee in one gulp and stood up, just as Mrs. Gordon knocked perfunctorily on the teachers’ room door and swung it open.

“Good morning, teachers,” she said as brightly as she could, watching them gather their bags and copies and head out to their classes.

Mrs. Tabak fidgeted with her bag’s zipper, waiting for the rest of the teachers to file out so she could talk to Mrs. Gordon. When the other teachers had gone, Mrs. Gordon turned to her.

“Mrs. Gordon,” Mrs. Tabak said, “I have a feeling my students aren’t going to be up to learning today.”

It definitely made Jerry’s life easier, though, to find that there was no connection to Block.

He was still apprehensive about meeting his boss, but it was a huge relief to know that he was the messenger of good news that day.

Luckily for him, Casey was in a good mood as well.

“Got it,” he said, not letting his voice choke. “I interrogated the guy myself. You can trust me.”

Casey’s eyes bored into Jerry’s for a long moment.

“Good,” Casey finally said. “Need a bonus for the extra interrogation?”

“Yes,” Jerry said. “Out of the regular work, you know.”

“Okay, okay, it’ll be in your bank account.”

Jerry waited to be dismissed.

“You know that I’m having a birthday party next week,” Casey said casually. “You’ll be invited.”

The last thing Jerry wanted to do was attend Casey’s drug dealer parties.

It wouldn’t do anything good for his safety, nor was he the least interested in the rampant drug use that was de rigueur there.

But he likely wouldn’t have a choice in the matter.

“How’s it going, Garrison?” Lieutenant Blackman asked.

When Mrs. Gordon returned to her office after sending the teachers into class, she found the two girls sitting just as she had left them:

With his arrest, his daughters were left feeling as vulnerable as if the world would have stopped spinning on its axis.

Mrs. Gordon opened her mouth to say something, then closed it.

She looked at Perry, who had tears in the corners of her eyes. “Perry,” she said, “would you like to learn something together, just like we used to do?”

“Come, Bruchi,” Mrs. Gordon said, turning to the girl whose tense posture showed just how turbulent her emotions were. “Sit down and join us.”

Bruchi sat down, the look on her face saying, I guess I have to.

Mrs. Gordon knew that Bruchi was wishing herself out of the office. But Bruchi, in any case, didn’t have very many choices about being there or not. She might as well gain something from the experience of being in the principal’s office since she was forced to be there anyway.

Mrs. Gordon turned her swivel chair toward the low bookshelf near her desk, perusing the titles. There were the inspirational books she’d learned with Perry during those lunch breaks, but Mrs. Gordon felt that there was something else needed here.

She took out a small English sefer on bitachon, based on the Chovos Halevavos, that was arranged for daily learning, and turned a couple of pages until she found what she was looking for.

She looked up at the two girls, whose faces were expectant as they looked back at her.

She swallowed. The clock read 9:10. While she didn’t know what was happening at the hearing, what she did know was Who was deciding what would be happening.

Bruchi looked at the sefer Mrs. Gordon was holding, and back up at Mrs. Gordon.

Do you really think that’s going to help? Her eyes asked.

“You know, even though you’re not there in the courtroom with your father,” Mrs. Gordon said, choosing her words carefully, “there is so much you can do to help him.”

“Mrs. Gordon, I think Perry already finished the whole Tehillim,” Bruchi said, casting a look at her older sister.

“Every bit of Tehillim is a huge zechus,” Mrs. Gordon said warmly. “But I think that right now, it’s important for us to remember why we say Tehillim. How can Tehillim even help?”

“Because Hashem is the One in charge, not the judge or the jury,” Perry said quietly.

“Exactly. But even more than knowing that Hashem is in charge, we want to remember that because Hashem is our loving Father, we can rely on him completely to do what’s best for us. And then, there’s no reason to be afraid of the outcome.”

Bruchi’s eyes suddenly brimmed with tears.

“Mrs. Gordon,” she said harshly, “if so, then why did this have to happen in the first place?! Are you saying it was a good idea that my father was arrested?!!”

Mrs. Gordon caught her breath.

“Bruchi,” she said as gently as she could, “do you want to see how this sefer can answer that question?”

Bruchi, the class queen fashionista snob who didn’t care what anyone else thought, and flippant student, looked up, eyes still full of tears, and nodded. •

IS A COMPLETELY FICTIONAL STORY WHICH TAKES PLACE FIFTY YEARS AFTER THE HOLOCAUST.

RECAP OF CHAPTER 13: Leo Sherer reprimands Naomi for putting her frumkeit on the whole preschool, even the non-Orthodox kids. He offers her a list of only non-Orthodox girls to choose an assistant from. Naomi chooses Katy Gross, an older girl who is socially off but who seems to like Naomi.

In Vienna, Dena and her husband and young family have recently moved from Israel to be near her husband’s parents. They’ve come to help out in the family spice-import business.

CHAPTER FOURTEEN

We are gratified to invite the members of the community to the engagement celebration of Mordechai, son of Reb Elimelech Kush, and Elka, daughter of Reb Shmelke Cohen, which will take place b’ezras Hashem after work hours, women in the sewing room, and men in the factory hall, second floor.

“Ha, ha!” Katy declared. “Everyone knows that it’s because you’re thin and pale and they didn’t find anyone else who agreed to work here besides you.”

“But I want to be working here!” Naomi was speaking loudly, looking at the children all around her. “They’re all so cute, Katy, don’t you think?”

“Not all of them.” The older girl wrinkled her nose. “For instance—”

““That girl who’s engaged—she’s your friend who was here, right?” Katy asked Naomi as she swiped a rag over the floor of the kindergarten room. “She works in the offices, doesn’t she? Hey, why don’t you?”

Naomi looked at a few of the children who had gathered around them, excitedly singing “kallah-kallah-kallahchasunah!” and replied, “What does that mean? I don’t work in the offices because I really love working with the children in the preschool!”

“Naomi, when are you going to be a kallah?” five-year-old Dror Elkovitz, who had appeared suddenly, asked. He was holding his coloring paper. “Look, I drew a kallah on my paper for your friend who got engaged. She’s the one who brought us those sugar candies, right?”

“Yes!” another boy chimed in. “Maybe she got engaged because she did this mitzvah!”

“Right!” two other children affirmed. In their small community, an event like a wedding was always exciting; it broke up the routine. It was no wonder that even the tots in the preschool were excited about the news.

“Is that really the girl?” Dror asked again.

“Yes,” Naomi said, relieved that he’d moved on without insisting on an answer to his first question.

“So I want to write ‘mazel tov’ to her, in Hebrew. How do we write it? Is there an aleph there? I know how to write an aleph!”

“There is no aleph,” Naomi replied. “But I can write the letters for you with chalk on the board, and you can copy them, okay?”

“Yay!” His eyes sparkled as he followed her to the other half of the classroom. There, four tables were arranged across from a wooden rectangle painted dark green. Her brother Binyamin had obtained a large wooden board and had covered it in six coats of glossy paint, until it had become as close to a real blackboard as possible. Now it was empty, as the older children were busy doing free play with the little ones.

Naomi took a piece of chalk and wrote the words “mazel tov” in large, neat letters on the board. Dror sat down at one of the older kids’ desks, and very quickly a group gathered around him.

“I also want to write it!” another boy said breathlessly. He was another child whose parents would not be happy having Naomi let him practice writing the aleph-beis letters. “I’m also big!”

Just then Mila appeared. She took in the scene before her: the Hebrew words on the board, and little Dror sitting there, assiduously copying the letters from it onto his paper.

“I’m going to have a word with Suzy Elkovitz,” she said after a moment, her voice dangerously calm. “It isn’t right that you’re teaching her son whatever you want. She’s going to talk to her father, the general manager.”

“You know, they named him Dror, and that’s a Hebrew word,” Naomi pointed out. “Even some of the irreligious people like the language.”

“Say what you want—but I’m sure his grandfather would be horrified if he knew about this!”

“Okay,” Naomi said resignedly. “So maybe they’ll fire me and appoint you in my place.”

“You know that I’m not interested in being the full-time teacher here,” Mila snapped. “I have a job waiting for me. But that doesn’t mean you can do whatever you want.”

Katy suddenly appeared from behind her. “Naomi absolutely can do whatever she wants! Yes, that is correct! Anyone who doesn’t want to be the teacher here shouldn’t talk! I know better than anyone that she and I are getting the lowest wages from everyone else in the camp, so at least give her this— that she can teach what she wants. And don’t you interfere, Mila!”

“In any case, no one wants to be the teacher instead of you; they don’t want to be a poor thing like Bilhah.

“The boy asked me to show him, Mila. I did nothing of my own initiative.”

“Really!”

“Yes!” Dror said suddenly. “I told Naomi to show me. I wanted to know if there’s an aleph here!”

“And who taught you about aleph?”

“I’m not saying!” the boy crowed. “It’s a secret between me and my Mamme!”

Mila looked at him strangely before turning back to Naomi. “I know that the mothers like you very much,” she said to Naomi. “But I don’t believe his mother is really aware of everything that is happening here. And I’m sure his grandfather doesn’t know that he is learning Hebrew letters in your preschool!”

“I’m going to talk to Suzy Elkovitz about this, too. Today.” Mila spoke quietly and tightly, hardly moving her lips. Her words were for Naomi’s ears only. “You knew what you were doing when you chose her, huh? But I won’t let this happen!”

But at six-thirty, when Suzy Elkovitz arrived, and her young son proudly showed her the paper with the mazel tov wishes he had prepared for Elky, the new kallah, she merely smiled weakly at it. Then she glanced furtively in every direction, before hurrying outside with him.

Mila watched them for a minute, and then dropped her broom and hurried after them.

“They won’t do anything to you,” Katy consoled Naomi compassionately. “In any case, no one wants to be the teacher instead of you; they don’t want to be a poor thing like Bilhah. They might scold you a bit, but that’s really it. Are you afraid?”

Naomi pondered the question for a moment and discovered that no, she was not afraid. She didn’t care if she’d be fired— because then she’d have a chance at a better job. In fact, that’s what her mother wished would happen. But on the other hand, she liked the children and the classroom… It’s rather sad when a person doesn’t know exactly what he wants, she mused.

“But it’s very normal!” her aunt Chani said, when she met her outside a few minutes later and told her her thoughts. Chani, like Naomi, did not have the rigorous and structured work hours that the other workers had. Her schedule revolved around mealtimes at the manor house. “If there are arguments in favor of both sides, then there’s what to deliberate about. And then yes, you don’t always know

“It happens to you, too?” Naomi asked with a sour smile.

“Yes, of course! Look, just today I was seriously not sure about two different things, one more important than the other.”

“Really? Can you share with me what happened?”

“Well, I’ll tell you about one of the things—the one that was less significant. Your friend Elky’s mother asked me to prepare the food for the vort. On the one hand, I really wanted to, because it would mean some extra income. On the other hand, I feel like these private cooking jobs come at the expense of other important things.”

“Like what, for example?”

“The few hours that I have with the children at home.”

Naomi thought about that. “I hear you,” she said. “So what did you decide to do?”

“To accept the private job—and to schmooze with my kids while I’d work on it.”

“Which is something you do a lot, as it is,” Naomi complimented her. “And what was the second thing?”

“I’m not telling.” Chani smiled, but her eyes were somber. “I’m still unsure about it.”

“So you’re going home now to start cooking for the vort?”

“To start cooking for it? What’s with you?! Of course not; I started before dawn this morning! Now I have to continue, until I finish. I’m running, Naomi.”

“Okay, good luck! And…thanks.”

“What for?”

“For letting me unload what’s on my heart.”

Above the crystal-encrusted mirror hung a long shelf on which rested clear flasks of various sizes, filled with spices in all kinds of colors and textures. The mirror was huge, and Dena, glancing at it from a distance of four meters away, saw herself looking small and hapless, drowning in the overstuffed white couch. Was this for real? Was she actually sitting here in Vienna with her mother-in-law, in front of elegant platters of cake, chatting about the difficulty of the move? They had come to help Bentzy’s father in his spiceimport business, and though the decision had been made a while ago, she was still having a hard time coming to terms with it. The whole thing still seemed surreal.

“I hardly had what to deliberate about; it was so clear to Bentzy that this is what we needed to do…” she said quietly. Her mother-in-law beamed. “You’re an amazing wife—I’ve told you that, haven’t I?” She nudged a plate of fudgy brownies toward her daughter-in-law. “But take my word for it: You’ll be here a few more days, and then you’ll forget that

it was ever even hard for you to come to Europe. And who knows? It might even be strange for you to go back to Israel, when the time comes!” She chuckled at the idea.

Dena nodded politely.

“So, what did your sisters have to say about it?”

They felt very bad for me. “They tried to help as best they could. Yael, who lives on my block, took my kids over to her while I packed.”

“They weren’t jealous of you?”

“I hope not.” Me? ! The quietest, most mediocre of them all?! What is there to be envious about?! That I married a rich boy from abroad?! It was clear to all of them that he was not in the top tier of his yeshivah, and not even in the second or third tier. And still, I allowed myself to weave dreams. Lots of great women started out very slowly.

So what is there for them to be jealous about? That I flew to Vienna for some time? It only distances me from my dreams, and leaves me feeling even smaller and more mediocre than I already was, compared to the rest of my family…

But this, of course, is not something I can tell Bentzy’s mother.

She picked up the little, two-tined fork in front of her, and saw her double in the mirror doing the same. She couldn’t stand it; all these trappings were not for her. How could someone eat calmly with this mirror right here, showing yourself chewing all the time?

Her mother-in-law did not seem to be suffering from the same difficulty. She glanced at herself in the mirror, brushed an invisible speck off her collar, and took a forkful of cake from her own plate. “Excellent cake,” she said to Dena. “Why aren’t you eating it? It’s a recipe from my mother; Bentzy always liked it. I made it for every one of his birthdays.”

“You’ll teach me how to make it,” Dena said, thinking about the strange kitchen that she’d have to start getting used to alone—and with a new and unfamiliar recipe, which appeared to be rather complicated, no less. She’d never baked a cake that hadn’t come recommended by one of her sisters, along with detailed tips from them.

“It’s a complicated recipe,” her shvigger said, confirming her daughter-in-law’s hesitations. “For instance, if you heat the chocolate cream for ten seconds too long, you’ll have to throw the whole mixture into the garbage, because it’ll get this horrible taste. If you want, the first few times you make the cake, we can do it together, step by step.”

“Thanks,” Dena said, not knowing if she should breathe a sigh of relief or the opposite. Baking with her shvigger at her side? She wasn’t all that good at baking in the first place.

She wasn’t that good at anything, actually. It had been that way since she’d been a little girl, and it was still true today.

ASIAN WONTON SALAD WITH TANGY SESAME DRESSING

Skip the fried eggrolls for a fresher, crunchier variation. This wonton salad has all the deliciousness you’re looking for to complement your heavy Purim fare.

Salad:

1- 14 oz. bag red cabbage

1- 14 oz. bag green cabbage

8-10 red radishes, sliced into matchsticks

1 small box microgreens

1 cup snap peas, cut into small cubes

1 bag Kravy wonton chips, crumbled into large pieces

Dressing:

½ cup rice vinegar

½ cup olive oil

2 tablespoons soy sauce

1-2 teaspoons sesame oil

1 lemon, juiced

4 teaspoons mustard

3-4 teaspoons honey

Sesame seeds (optional)

Directions:

1. Dressing: Combine all the dressing ingredients in a jar or container. Blend with an immersion blender until smooth. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

CRUNCHY CHICKEN SALAD WITH CHIVE MAYO DRESSING

You can never go wrong with a good old chicken salad. Here, we gave it a more flavorful and fun twist that makes it an instant winner for all year round.

Salad:

1 24 oz. bag chopped Romaine lettuce

8-10 slices grilled chicken, cut into cubes

1-2 cups spiralized beets

1 cup mini dill pickles, cut into cubes

1 box grape tomatoes, cut into halves

½ red onion, thinly sliced

½ of an 8.8-oz. Bag Paskesz bagel chips

Dressing:

1 cup mayonnaise

3 cloves crushed garlic

2 tablespoons lemon juice

1 teaspoon parsley flakes

⅛ teaspoon black pepper

¼ teaspoon salt

⅓ cup water (or more for a thinner consistency) handful of chives, washed and checked

Directions:

1. Dressing: Combine all the dressing ingredients in a jar or container. Blend with an immersion blender until smooth. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

2. Salad: Layer the salad ingredients in a large serving platter. Display on your table with dressing on the side.

ROASTED MEDLEY SALAD WITH HONEY MUSTARD DRESSING

There’s a reason that roasted salad bowls are always emptied first. Here, we bring you a new, delicious medley, featuring golden veggies, fresh, crunchy components, and a surprise burst of beef jerky. It’s a perfect balance in every bite.

Salad:

2 5-oz. boxes spring mix or spinach leaves

7 oz. red cabbage (½ bag)

1 box fresh white button mushrooms, cut into halves or quarters

1 butternut squash, cut into very small cubes

10-12 mini zucchini or 1 large zucchini, cut into cubes

2-3 bags Old Williamsburg beef jerky, cut into bits

1 cup corn nuts

Salt and pepper, for seasoning vegetables

Dressing:

¼ cup honey

2 tablespoons dijon mustard

¼ cup white vinegar

¼ cup olive oil

2 teaspoons lemon juice

½ teaspoon pepper

1 teaspoon salt

2 teaspoons dried parsley flakes

Directions:

1. Dressing: Combine all the dressing ingredients in a jar or container. Blend with an immersion blender until smooth. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

Salad:

2. Preheat your oven to 425° and line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper.

3. Spray cooking spray on the surface of the parchment paper, then spread the chopped mushrooms, butternut squash, and zucchini in an even layer.

4. Spray the vegetables with cooking spray and lightly season with salt and pepper.

5. Bake for 30-35 minutes until vegetables are soft and lightly browned. Remove from heat.

6. To Serve: Layer the spring mix, red cabbage, roasted vegetables, beef jerky, and corn nuts in a large serving platter. Display on your table with dressing on the side.

SPIKED LEMON SPRITZ

Just a fun little hack to get a spiked drink on your table in minutes.

Ingredients:

1 bottle Tuscanini lemonade

½ bottle seltzer

2- 50 ml. Mini Smirnoff Vodka (or more to taste)

Sliced lemons

AQLast year, I inevitably put on a few pounds over Purim. As much as I wanted to follow a plan, it was out the window and I completely lost it. Is it true that the easiest time to knock off a few pounds is right after you've put them on?

If so, how can I quickly go back to my pre-Purim weight?

Good question. I think that many people will be nodding along as they read your question.

This year, since Purim starts on Motzai Shabbos, here is my suggestion:

Firstly, I would suggest that you should aim to support yourself with healthy and balanced eating on Thursday night already. (If you are fasting, break your fast on a little treat and then have a solid and balanced dinner portion.) The reason I say this is that since most of us start veering off track on Thursday night, as we start packing away our Shabbos foods. Little nibbles and little bites of food start accumulating and throw us off track. We women are pretty much all wired the same way…. we start thinking, if I was already off track on Thursday, let me let loose on Friday…and before we know it, this can morph into one giant binge, until Shushan Purim. I would suggest that you aim to execute perfection over the course of Shabbos so that you can feel light and amazing Motzai Shabbos, which is Purim night. Rolling into Purim feeling lethargic and bloated as many of us typically do, is a recipe for disaster. A tip that works well for myself and many of the women that I work with, is to write down what your predicted Shabbos menu will be on Friday, down to Melavah Malka, so that you have a concrete and physical plan to follow.

Now back to your question regarding weight loss: I don’t consider weight gain from overeating one day, to be a real fat weight gain, rather a water weight gain. A gain turns into a real gain, when

you have been consuming way more calories than your body needs, over the course of a few days. Gaining weight from overeating for just one day, can easily be lost in an uncomplicated way. Here are some ways to help you get right back on track after a “binge” day:

1. Eat three balanced meals. Don’t start making calculations that since you went way over your calorie “budget” yesterday, you need to be in a deficit today. Give your body the respect it deserves.

2. Drink 8 cups of water and eat a fiber rich diet.

3. Move! You don’t need to engage in rigid exercise to burn off all your extra calories, but you do have to make yourself feel comfortable in your body. Taking a brisk walk, or engaging in any home-based exercise modality can only help you feel better.

4. Go to sleep on time. Part of the healing process and getting your body balanced again is sleep. Aim to go to sleep on time after Purim to help ease this process.

For those of you who know me, I never encourage rash or rigid diets. The key word here is respectful eating. Yes, perhaps you binged and lost it over a day, but getting onto track the next morning is the best gift you can give yourself. It happens to the best of us, and it is part of life. No regrets, just good intentions going forward.

Without hesitation, you call out to her mother and alert her about the situation. The mother runs to pick up her baby and bring her back to the park. Afterwards, the mother comes over and thanks you for your help. She would have been so scared if the baby had gotten lost, and now, thanks to your alertness, the baby is safe. How can the story of Purim and Hamantashen help us remember how to react when things don’t go well?

In the story of Purim, Esther was among the young girls who were taken to the palace. Eventually, she became the queen, but it was not something she had wanted. At first, Esther felt upset about her situation. However, when a plan to harm the Jews was discovered, Queen Esther found herself in the right place at the right time to help. Thanks to her efforts, all the Jews were saved. When we eat the delicious Purim pastry called Hamantashen, we can remember the story of Purim and remind ourselves that even in difficult situations, there is always some good to be found. We should trust that everything that happens is part of Hashem’s plan & for the good, even if we can’t always see it.

S’mores Hamentashen

Preheat your oven to 350°F. In a large bowl, thoroughly mix together the eggs, sugar, and oil.

Press the cookie cutter into the dough to make circles and remove excess dough.

Re-pinch the corners of the hamentash to create a seal, place on a cookie sheet & ask an adult to bake for 14-16 minutes, until set, but not hard.

Add baking powder, flour, and cocoa. Mix until dough forms. Cover and chill for 45 minutes.

Place a small spoonful of marshmallow fluff in the center of the circle.

Your Hamentshen are ready! Make a Bracha & enjoy. A Freilechen Purim!

Take a large piece of dough and roll it out using a rolling pin until it is 1/8 inch thick.

To form the hamentash shape, tightly pinch together three corners of the dough to create a triangle. Repeat this process with the remaining dough.
