During a group session, Martin meets Mike. Mike lets on that he knows Martin is a fraud; that he’s not really schizophrenic or Michael Perl’s nephew, and that he (Mike) was the one who had lent Perl his phone all along so that Perl could be in touch with Hinda.

Martin realizes that Mike could be a big danger to the whole plan.

CHAPTER SEVENTY FIVE

It sounded like Mike was very sure of his facts, so there was no point in denying them.

But Martin was not the type to be convinced without a fight. “What are you going on about?” he said scornfully. “I didn’t know that anorexia has a severe effect on other perceptions, besides the perception of the body’s proportions. Who exactly is not my uncle? And on what grounds did you evaluate me and decide what I do or don’t have?”

Mike just smiled knowingly. “Fine, fine.” His voice was also low, making it sound even more threatening. “You know that I know, and that’s it.”

“Tell me, what do you want from me?” Martin was both on the offensive, and trying to appease, at the same time. “Not much.” He continued to snicker, arousing in Martin a desire to give him a stinging slap across the face. “Just one thing.”

“Just one thing!” He was very careful not to affirm the boy’s suspicions. He stepped around him and after two steps, turned and threw back in a whisper: “You have demands, huh? Well, keep them to yourself.”

“I don’t keep anything to myself.”

Martin fixed him with a withering glare, while processing the information as fast as he could. If this Mike, who until now had cooperated to an extent with Michoel Perl, was resorting

to threats, it was probably an extortion attempt. There was a good reason that he had come over to him now and started talking about the familial relation that didn’t exist. He could have gone straight to Dr. Skulholt and told him about the truth he had discovered.

Obviously, he really did want something from Martin.

“So tell me: what do you want?” Too bad he couldn’t scream. Mike glared back at him steadily as his lips formed the words, soundlessly: “To get out of here with you.”

Martin left the room with large strides, dashed down the stairs, and from there, made a beeline for the grassy lawns, as if trying to escape from the conversation. The slim boy was hot on his heels.

They walked one behind the other along the path; for anyone looking at them, it could have looked like a foolish ego game. Eventually, Martin stopped in a quiet corner, where there were no bushes, and turned around to the other boy, who was huffing and puffing behind him. “Which means?”

“I’ll help in whichever way I can,” Mike said, looking at Martin calmly. “But for that I need us to be on the same side. If you help me, I’ll help you.”

“Why would I want to leave?” Now was exactly the time to play dumb. “I want them to treat me. My uncle also wants to get well. Don’t you? Do you enjoy having anorexia that much?”

“Stop it already.” This time it was Mike who turned on his heel. “Just remember what I said to you. And when you want to, let me know.”

“When I want what?”

“I’m not repeating myself.” Mike turned to the building again, and because he was whispering, Martin wasn’t sure he was hearing him right. “And don’t say I didn’t warn you.”

“Your threats are quite amusing.” Martin was determined to have the last word. “And I’ll tell my uncle about you. Ha!

You’re a real comedian!”

Mike didn’t answer, and moved off.

Martin walked slowly back to the building, wondering where he was supposed to go now that the ridiculous group session had ended. He didn’t remember his schedule for today. Another meeting in Dr. Jerry’s room? With his lips pressed together, he walked into the corridor and began walking. He wondered what Michoel would say about the youth and the conversation they’d had.

“Ah, Josef!” Dr. Jerry Skulholt almost collided with him as he hurried down the stairs. “You’re just the one I wanted to speak to now.” He stopped, and Martin had no choice but to stop too. He slowly climbed another stair, and then murmured, “What?” Now he was one step above the psychiatrist, but the added height did not give him any advantage, or even a shred of an idea of what to do.

The doctor fixed him with a look and said, “You and Mike got at each other, huh? What happened? Do you know each other from somewhere?”

“No.” Yosef Schorr often wore an inscrutable expression.

“What were you talking about?”

“Nothing much.” He wanted to keep moving. He was allowed to be not particularly pleasant or obedient.

“What was it about?” The doctor also knew how to be not so pleasant when he wanted to.

“He’s the edge type, and he got very angry when I was talking to the counselor and used his hat as an example for something.”

Dr. Skulholt blinked. “The argument was very long,” he said. “For all that time you were only speaking about his hat?”

“Um…no.” Martin scratched the back of his neck. “Not only about the hat. We mostly argued about my uncle.” If his gamble was right, and Mike was not collaborating with the management, he had to get to him and update him about the new version of their argument. He hoped that no one else on the staff had buttonholed Mike on some other staircase in the building and was debriefing him right now.

“And what were you arguing about, in regard to your uncle?”

“He said that he, I mean Mike, is the closest to Michoel, because they’ve been here together for a long time, and now that I came, that wouldn’t change. I told him that he was just a stand-in, because my uncle didn’t have anyone else close to him in this place. The fact is that he wanted very much for me to come here.”

The psychiatrist looked annoyed. “I hope you’ll be smart and not start up with him again,” he said. “We’re a group, and a group is power. Arguments destroy that power. By the way, how was your meeting with everyone?”

“Fine.”

“It’s a session that takes place once a day.”

“But you promised there would be interesting things.”

“And? It wasn’t interesting?”

“No. Just lots of talking from someone who had a dream and told everyone about it for twenty minutes,” he huffed. “You think that’s what will help me? I had all kinds of support groups and stuff like that in Israel, and it’s all a bunch of nonsense.”

“Wait,” the psychiatrist said. “You just got here, and you want to do everything already? Things take time.”

“How much time?”

“Time.” He smiled again. When Ernie had put an eye on that millionaire businessman on the bus, he had thought only about the money. But the nephew himself was turning out to be a real asset to their group: he was clever, even brilliant, and in a mental state that tended toward dependency. “Do you know how to wait patiently?”

“A little bit, not much.”

“I suggest you work on it. Our healing methods also require patience, but after that, it’s worth it.”

“Fine.” Martin-Yosef nodded and stalked off without another word. He had to find Mike and update him about the fabricated details of their argument that he’d told Skulholt about. It was lunchtime, and Michoel said they’d sit at a table with Mike and eat together. It was interesting that Mike— without his yarmulke—was so strict about kashrus.

“I’m from a very traditional family,” Mike replied coldly when they sat down at the small, round table in the dining room, and Martin-Yosef mentioned it. “And it’s important to my parents.”

“Oh.” Martin looked around the room, leaned forward, and asked, “Do they have listening devices here, too?”

“Not to the best of my knowledge,” Mike replied confidently. “But there are cameras. You should sit straight and say what you want to say quietly, without all the secrecy. After lunch, we’ll go out to the gardens and find a quiet corner to talk.”

Michoel looked at both of them and passed a hand over his wrinkle-lined face. “You two have become friends?”

Martin snickered. “Sort of.”

“Eat up, children,” Michoel said to the two boys, and glanced behind him. The closest table was rather far away, but still he couldn’t relax. “And don’t forget that every potential recovered person can also be a potential tattler, so please be careful.”

“For sure.” Martin nodded. “Say, Mike, did someone ask you about our argument?”

“No.”

“The doctor met me and asked me what it was about.” He spoke calmly, leaning back in his seat and eyeing Michoel, who was trying to open a can of tuna with a can opener. “I told him we started arguing because of your hat, and then we began to argue about who Uncle Michoel loves more.” He smiled to himself and took a disposable plate from the middle of the table. “Just so you should know, in case

someone asks you.”

It was a good thing he’d had time to say this, because a moment later, Skulholt came to their table and asked Mike to come out to the corridor with him.

As soon as Mike had left the room, Martin turned to Michoel.

“Can he be trusted?” he asked, pointing with his fork to the door of the dining room.

“He’s a good boy,” Michoel answered slowly. “But as far as trusting him, I don’t know to what extent you can.”

“It seems he recorded your conversations on his phone.”

Perl’s forehead creased, but he didn’t say a word.

“I hope that what he’s telling the psychiatrist now is not what we spoke about, but what I told him that we spoke about.”

“I hope so too,” Michoel said testily. “It wasn’t very smart of you to trust him so much during your first encounter with him.”

“I didn’t do much; he came to me with all the information— which, by the way, he got from the fact that you trusted him and spoke so freely on his phone.”

“I didn’t know you could record conversations like that.”

“So now you—” He fell silent as Mike weaved his way among the tables back to theirs. He sat down quietly and picked up his fork. They both looked at him. He muttered something unintelligible, and the three of them continued eating quietly. After a few short minutes, they went out to the front lawn.

“If they ask, we’ll tell them we went out to speak privately because we asked Michoel to mediate between us,” Martin said with a laugh. “So, he asked you about our argument, too? What did you tell him?”

“What you made up with me,” Mike snapped. “What do you think?”

“What do I think? I think that I don’t really know you, or how much I can trust you. Someone who records private conversations…”

“When it’s my only way to get out of here? And, by the way, is coming here under a fake identity any more trustworthy?”

“True,” Martin conceded with a smile, theatrically raising his hands. “So, that’s what Skulholt wanted, to ask you about our argument?”

“Well, that too.”

“And what else?” Michoel interjected.

“They want us to go out to Charleston tomorrow, as usual.”

Michoel blinked and then said, “Oh, your demonstrations. They would take me along this time, too?”

“He told me to feel you out about doing it.”

“What do you do there?”

“We hold signs, sing songs, and walk in the street until we get to the town hall…nothing special.”

“I’d like to go,” Martin announced. “They won’t let you. You’re not here long enough to know about their ideology, and you won’t be able to answer questions about it when people come over to you.”

“People actually come over to you?”

“Sure.” Mike laughed. “It doesn’t sound like an attraction to you? We try not to get the people angry, but rather to attract their attention.”

“Besides for that night of wild behavior, when some of you guys got into the headlines,” Martin remarked. “A couple people are still sitting in jail for that, right?”

“No, they were sent to a psychiatric hospital. Well, that was when Ernie took them one day himself, and there wasn’t advance coordination. That’s how it is when you send crazies to lead a group of crazies. Dr. Jerry was so annoyed about that whole incident… But you know, he wouldn’t get rid of Ernie because of it; the guy does serve a great purpose.”

“Ernie? Is he on the staff? I don’t remember seeing him here.”

“No, he’s one of the people who work to recruit new patients. For example, he scouts around in hospital wards, shock and trauma centers, and psychiatric wards, and persuades patients to try the treatment here.”

“Maybe that’s how he got me.”

“Apparently,” Mike replied.

“I wonder if I’d recognize him when I see him. I would want to know how much of my memory I still have from those days.”

“He’s not here much. If I see him, I’ll let you know.”

Michoel nodded. “Okay, thanks. As for tomorrow, I want to join.”

“Join? Tomorrow?” Martin glanced from one to the other and lowered his voice. He needed all of his willpower not to lean forward conspiratorially, as he asked, “But why don’t you two stay back here, and when the place empties out— we’ll call police to rescue us?”

Mike looked at him with an expression that Martin could not interpret. “You’re too impulsive.”

“Why?”

“Because you just got here, and you want to work right away without thinking for a minute. Call law enforcement?” Mike laughed. “Why do you think I haven’t reported anything to anyone all this time?”

“Why indeed? Because they are probably smart enough to handle such a visit.”

“Good, so you do understand. When the police come, they hide the suspicious patients, and that means anyone who has a private phone, and a few others who aren’t reliable. And then they investigate to figure out who called the cops. And when they find that person, it’s not good for him at all.”

“Maybe they won’t hide us,” Martin replied, looking up at the sky. Cerulean, clean, free. “There won’t be anyone here when the police arrive, and after we go over to them, Skulholt won’t be able to do anything to us anymore.”

“Why won’t they hide us?”

“Who would do it?”

“They don’t empty out the place totally. The one who opens the electric gate for the police from inside will stick us into some hole beforehand.”

“Maybe you, but why me?” Martin bristled. “You have a phone, fine. And Uncle Michoel came here without anyone asking him if he’s interested. But I supposedly want to get well!”

“But you’re too new,” Mike said calmly. “And even in the case that they will let you walk around freely, and you’ll be able to exchange a few words with someone who comes, they will tell him right away that you’re a diagnosed schizophrenic, and your words mean nothing. And the risk isn’t worth it, believe me.”

“What happened to those who tried in the past?”

“They aren’t here today.”

“They were murdered?” Uncle Michoel gasped with dread. “No, but they are hospitalized in serious condition in the psychiatric ward, and I don’t think,” he snickered, “that being careful about mirrors and pictures, and eating disgusting herbs and grass, will help them anymore… That’s how badly they were drugged up and messed around with.”

As if he’d heard what they were saying, the psychiatrist approached just then. They nodded at him in greeting, and he responded with a nod and a broad smile of his own before turning to Martin. “These are your new medications, Josef,” he said, pressing a small, green paper bag into his hand. “Start taking them tomorrow morning. There is some printed information inside about their effects and how to take them properly. What are the three of you doing here? Not fighting, right?”

“I’m teaching them some manners,” Perl replied seriously. “Good for you, good for you!” Dr. Jerry chuckled, patting the older man’s shoulder before walking off.

Michoel Perl waited for a few minutes as he rubbed his forehead. “He looks so decent and honest… But don’t take any of that stuff he gives you, of course. What’s in there?”

“If they haven’t decided to give him anything psychotic at this point, then it’s probably just ‘shepherd’s purse,’ or maybe some aloe vera.” Mike laughed.

“I have a different question, Mike.” Martin wasn’t particularly interested in the contents of the bag in his pocket. “How is it that they trust you enough to let you have a phone, if you are so anti this place?”

“It was a process,” Mike replied quietly. “In my introductory meetings, they made such a good impression on me, like they were really dedicated to the members of the group, so warm and caring…”

“Like lots of cult leaders.” Michoel nodded.

“I don’t know, but they persuaded me. The material I read about them gave me a strong desire to get to know them better. And when I arrived here and started to get into their methods seriously, I really did feel much stronger. But then afterward, slowly but surely, I picked up on all kinds of practices that just felt very…off to me. And wrong.”

“It’s good that you continued using your judgment,” Martin said. “There’s a point where people lose it, you know.”

“What’s an example of these ‘off’ practices that you saw?”

Michoel Perl—who Martin had already started calling ‘Uncle Michoel’ in his mind—asked.

“There are people here who just get more and more drugged; I have no idea what they are getting. And some of the talk and theories sound crazier than the craziest things I’ve ever heard in my life.” He glanced at Martin-Yosef and lowered his gaze right away. “And the fact that they don’t let me see my sister… Okay, I understand that I can’t bring her here without my parents’ permission, but why not let me see her? At first they did make some kind of offer to that effect, but then they denied it all!”

It seemed like Mike had forgotten that he had two people listening attentively to him; he was fuming now, and his eyes were flashing. Martin, who was noticing the receding figure of the psychiatrist enter the building, just hoped that no one else was sitting and watching them now, and would come in another twenty minutes to see what they had been “arguing” about this time.

“How old is your sister?” he asked Mike.

“She’s six. And she’s also anorexic.” He closed his eyes for a moment, and Martin wondered if he had superior acting abilities or if this was genuine. “She sent me faxes telling me that her life is in danger. I wanted them to heal her.”

“I can understand them,” Michoel said carefully. “They don’t want to get in trouble for abducting a minor.”

“I just wanted to see her! To give her some material to read!” “Reading material? For a six-year-old?” Something about the story did not add up for Martin. It sounded delusional, if not an outright lie.

“She’s a genius; her IQ is extremely high. She’s in a school for gifted children. I, on the other hand, was always the dumbbell of the family, at least compared to her.”

“Hey, don’t talk that way!” Michoel put a hand on his shoulder. “But it really was like that. My parents, even before knowing how brilliant she was, were out of their minds with joy when she was born. Then, when she began talking at only five months old, they were over the moon. The strange thing is that always…she always had a great relationship with me. She…she’s actually the only person who admired me, who listened to me, who gave me a real place in the family. She couldn’t care less about my grades; to her, I was simply the big brother she looked up to…”

“Hendy, come look what came!” Simchi called from the front door. It was a familiar call these days, accompanied by the telltale undercurrent of excitement that sent every Gruber sibling flying to the door.

“What, what is it?” Ten-year-old Toby reached Simchi first, bouncing up and down in impatient excitement.

“It’s Hendy’s present for Rosh Hashanah!” Simchi announced importantly, relishing his role as town crier.

Frimi, Nussen, and Baily all crowded around the elegantly wrapped package, gawking in admiration. Not that Baily, at five years old, had any appreciation for leather machzorim. But the fancy gold ribbons that came along with every kallah gift that Hendy received had already earned her complete reverence. Only after her siblings had ogled sufficiently did Hendy, the kallah herself, sedately make her way to the entrance hall where her gift lay.

“Hendy, it’s so fancy!” Frimi said in amazement, looking up at her older sister with respect. Hendy smiled at her indulgently and took the wrapped package from Simchi’s hands. She’d been wondering what kallah gift she would receive for Rosh Hashanah. Here it was.

“Can we see? Can we see?” Nussen and Frimi pleaded.

Hendy hesitated for a brief second. She wanted to luxuriate in the pleasure of opening her gift in the privacy of her bedroom. But surrounded by all these adorable faces, she gave in.

“Okay,” she said. “But not here. Come to my room, and don’t touch anything when you’re there, kay? Then I’ll let you see.”

All her siblings nodded earnestly, and they followed Hendy, a miniature entourage flocking around her as she headed for her bedroom cradling the large package. There was an atmosphere of hushed excitement as Hendy carefully opened the wrapped package, taking out a box of dark leather machzorim, which she placed on her desk. There was a small jewelry box in the package as well, which Hendy opened. It was a necklace, clearly meant to be worn in the weekday.

“What is that?” a few voices asked at once, and the respectful silence her siblings had been keeping was broken.

“It’s a necklace,” Hendy replied casually, showing it to her younger siblings.

“Wow, it’s so pretty,” Frimi said. Hendy smiled

at her.

After stashing the wrappings to the side, Hendy looked at the note that had been attached to it. For our special kallah, l’kavod Rosh Hashanah. Enjoy in good health!

Typical of her mother-in-law, it was short and to the point.

“That’s it, kids,” Hendy announced. “Now you can go play. There’s nothing else to see.”

Slowly, her siblings drifted out of the bedroom, reluctant to leave the magical place where fancy presents were common occurrences.

Left in the privacy of her bedroom, Hendy looked closer at the gifts she’d received. Yes, her eyes hadn’t been fooling her. There was no name embossed in the leather covers.

She swallowed. It also wasn’t the kind of machzorim that she’d been hoping to get. This type was smaller and less common than the ones she’d had her eyes on.

It’s probably cheaper, the unwelcome thought intruded in her mind. She brushed it away.

Big deal, she told herself. It was only machzorim, not like a piece of jewelry she would have to wear for the rest of her life. True, she would have to use them this year in shul on Rosh Hashanah, because her mother-in-law would be there. But it wasn’t something that everyone would notice. Although she didn’t know why her motherin-law hadn’t had her name put on the covers. She wouldn’t mention it, of course, but she did wonder.

Trying to convince herself that none of it mattered, Hendy turned her attention to the necklace that had come along with the machzorim. It was nice, really, that her future mother-in-law was constantly including smaller gifts together with the larger kallah gifts. The only problem was that although Hendy had gotten to choose the styles for her diamond jewelry, her mother-in-law picked out these smaller presents on her own. And Hendy’s taste was not quite the same as her future mother-in-law’s.

It was a nice piece, pretty classic. But it wasn’t something Hendy would have chosen. It really is pretty though. Hendy turned it over in her palms. She could definitely wear it, although she wouldn’t feel excited to put it on. It was nice enough.

Truthfully, it wasn’t about this specific present. There had been other presents that she’d been

disappointed with, and of course, there were the typical disappointments when she hadn’t been able to get exactly what she wanted in her kallah package.

Like when the guy in the housewares store told her that the pattern of china she wanted was out of stock, or when she couldn’t exchange her vort gifts because she’d missed the deadline. And then when the gowns she’d been dreaming of for all her little siblings hadn’t come out quite perfect, and when she’d had to choose between getting the more expensive furniture options or getting a full package.

No kallah got everything she wanted, Hendy knew that, but she still felt disappointment when her sheitel didn’t come out perfect. Was she just human, or was it her own problem that these things bothered her?

Maybe it was because she was a perfectionist, and every little detail mattered to her. She noticed things that other people didn’t, and when they weren’t just so, it bothered her.

Closing the door to her bedroom, Hendy went to rejoin her mother in the kitchen, where they’d been putting together some last-minute Rosh Hashanah dishes before Simchi had made his grand announcement. Her mother looked up expectantly as she entered. She didn’t say, “Nu?!”, but her expression said it for her.

Hendy forced a smile. “It was my machzorim,” she said, trying to look like a thrilled kallah. “And she even sent a necklace along with it. Isn’t it nice, the way she’s always sending extras?”

“It’s super generous of her,” Hendy’s mother said. “But you don’t sound so happy.”

“I know, I’m such a baby,” Hendy let down her guard completely. “It’s not the type of machzorim I wanted, and I don’t really like the necklace. But really, I’m getting married already in less than two months and I’m still busy getting disappointed about silly presents. I should just be happy that I’m engaged and getting married.”

“Doesn’t sound like you’re doing such a good job convincing yourself,” Hendy’s mother laughed.

Hendy chuckled. It was good to share the disappointment with her mother. It highlighted the triviality of it even more, despite Hendy’s very real disappointment.

“Look, when you’re a kallah everything is major. It’s just how it is. Even which machzorim you get for Rosh Hashanah.”

Hendy nodded. “I know.” Her mother kept reassuring her by saying that, but Hendy wondered if she just said it to make her feel better.

She thought about it for a little, and then added, “I guess I feel even sillier being upset about such a stupid thing because it’s Rosh Hashanah. Like, Rosh Hashanah is so not about machzorim. There’s so much else for me to be thinking about. I’m getting married this year!”

Her mother nodded solemnly. “Yes, it’s true. You really have a lot to daven for.”

Hendy looked down at the food she was preparing unseeingly, feeling her stomach twist. She wasn’t generally a very nervous kallah, but when her mother put it that way…She really did have a lot to daven for.

And one of the things she needed to ask for was the ability to put things in perspective, so that she didn’t get upset about things of no consequence whatsoever. ***

Somehow, even after all the endless months of preparation, Hendy was taken by complete surprise when she woke up on the day of her wedding.

She was actually getting married.

Twin frissons of excitement and nervousness shot through her stomach, and she sat up immediately. Her room furnishings seemed to smile nostalgically to her, as if to say, “Very soon, we won’t be yours anymore…” Yup, her big day had arrived, as surreal as it still seemed.

Hendy’s mother was the super-organized type, so although there was a lot to do, a calm atmosphere pervaded the house. There were a few last-minute arrangements to take care of, but nothing that involved Hendy. She was free to be a starry-eyed kallah.

Which is just what she was, until the hairstylist arrived for her appointment. Hendy sat in the chair obligingly while reminding herself that this was the very last time. She'd discussed her exact preferences with the stylist before, so that she could be relaxed now.

That was exactly when the trouble started. How it had gotten lost, it was probably impossible to know. The carefully prepared bag with all her kallah accessories had been sealed and put away together with her kallah gown, to peacefully await the big day. But now, when they opened

the bag, the silver tiara she’d so carefully chosen was nowhere to be found.

“Uh oh,” Mrs. Gruber, Hendy’s mother, exclaimed in consternation. “I can’t believe it’s not here! Where else can it be?”

“That’s so weird,” Hendy said, watching her mother rummage through the bag frantically.

“Maybe it’s with the shoes that we got from the same place?” Hendy’s mother thought aloud, searching through all Hendy’s kallah paraphernalia. When the tiara refused to turn up, she enlisted everyone at home to help search for the missing silver crown.

“I can’t believe it’s missing!” Mrs. Gruber repeated, as they looked in the most unlikely places. She called the rental to ask if it had been left behind, but they said it was marked down as taken. After Mrs. Gruber explained their predicament, the rental owner was eager to help.

“You can have a different one, if you like,” she said helpfully.

Mrs. Gruber looked at Hendy, whose hair was mostly already styled. It didn’t really make sense to go and choose a new tiara right now. Especially since the rental was far, and – she checked her watch – even with all her careful planning, they wouldn’t make it in time for pictures if they went to the rental right now to choose a new one.

“Well, I’m not sure we can come in,” Mrs. Gruber said. “It is the day of the chasunah, you know. Maybe I’ll send someone else down.”

Hendy’s young aunt was roped into duty, as Mrs. Gruber explained the situation. She was happy to go choose something for Hendy.

“But how will I know what you want?” the lady asked.

Hendy took the phone and tried to explain what she’d originally chosen and what she had in mind. Hopefully, the helpful woman on the phone would be able to choose something appropriate.

“Don’t worry, though,” Hendy made sure to add. “You’re doing me a huge favor either way, no matter what it is. I just need something to wear!”

“You’re so calm,” Mrs. Gruber noticed as Hendy handed back the phone. “I’m getting all worked up already, and you’re just saying it’s okay.”

Hendy smiled. “I know.” She tried to gather her thoughts to explain why the prospect of wearing something that she hadn’t chosen and might not be to her liking no longer scared her.

“It’s like, I was thinking about it on Rosh Hashanah.

There were so many big things to daven for, so many major things to think about. I tried to be careful not to let all the little things distract me from the important things to daven for.” Hendy explained.

She remembered her Rosh Hashanah tefillos that year, using the machzorim that she’d received as a kallah present. With that constant reminder in front of her, her davening had been full of her newfound desire to be able to keep her perspective straight.

It had rained on Rosh Hashanah, and Hendy’s hair had gotten completely ruined. Normally, that would have ruined her Yom Tov too. But she’d made sure that it wouldn’t. Her hair wasn’t important enough to let it ruin her Rosh Hashana.

She was determined to internalize what was trivial and what was important, and not let the trivialities take up too much room. Every time something had come up during her kallah shopping, she’d forced herself to remain focused on the big picture.

Now, though, she was facing a real test. But her focus stayed strong.

By now, it was automatic that her knee-jerk disappointment was followed immediately by thoughts of how little this mishap was in the scheme of things. Would she care in ten years that the tiara she’d worn was not exactly what she’d had in mind? By that time, styles would have changed, and no matter what she would have worn, her pictures would be old-fashioned. Wasn’t she so lucky compared to those kallahs that had gotten married during the pandemic? She was having a beautiful wedding, surrounded by friends and family. That was what was really important.

Her mother was still looking at her, a bemused expression on her face. Was this really her Hendy?

Hendy smiled again. She couldn’t explain her shift in perspective. It was hard to define what had really changed. So she didn’t try to. “It’s just not so important, Mommy,” she said. And her tone rang with true conviction. She’d figured it out just in time. •

Let’s start your Semi - Homemade Yom Tov meal with the first course: Dips, Featuring our Mild Jalapeno Tahini Dressing

The slogan on our dressings is “Not a bottled dressing”, because the only semblance they carry to bottled salad dressings is said bottle. There are no preservatives that aren’t naturally occurring, they’re made with the ingredients you’d find at your local farmer’s market, and require the tedious work of zesting, squeezing, chopping, emulsifying, and making too many bowls dirty

They’re homemade, just not by you. You’re welcomed.

INGREDIENTS: DIRECTIONS:

◆ 2 15 ounce cans of chick peas

◆ ½ a bottle of Fork + Bowl

Mild Jalapeno Tahini

Dressing

◆ 1 clove garlic

◆ Olive oil

◆ Quart of cremini (baby bella) mushrooms, sliced

◆ Salt and pepper

OPTIONAL:

◆ ¼ cup wine or cooking wine (any variety you have on hand)

◆ Fresh (checked) thyme, mint, or parsley

1. BEFORE YOM TOV, WHEN THE DISHWASHER IS STILL WORKING OVERTIME: CHICKPEAS

◆ Drain, rinse and dry the chickpeas well. Add to the bowl of a food processor with 1 clove of garlic.

◆ Process the beans for several minutes, scraping down the sides of the machine as needed. The mixture will be dry at this point, but this method makes the creamiest hummus.

◆ Add the half bottle of Mild Jalapeno Tahini Dress while the machine is whirring with a sprinkle of salt and pepper, to emulsify the hummus.

◆ Store in the fridge until ready to serve.

MUSHROOMS

◆ Heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a skillet (NEVER nonstick). Saute the mushrooms with salt & pepper for about 5 minutes over medium high heat, stirring almost constantly until they turn golden. Add a touch more oil if needed.

◆ Add a splash of wine to the pan to make a thin sauce. Let the wine bubble for a minute, deglazing the mushroom.

◆ Store in the fridge until ready to serve.

2. TO SERVE:

◆ Spread the hummus in a wide shallow bowl and use the back of a spoon to create a spiral in the surface. This creates nice nooks and crannies for the mushrooms and olive oil to collect in. Drizzle the surface with olive oil, top with musroom mixture, cover loosely with foil, and warm.

◆ Top with finely chopped herbs of your choice.

FYI

1.You can even *cough* use a store-bought tub of hummus for this recipe. Just swirl it into an oven proof bowl, pour ¼ bottle of Mild Jalapeno Tahini Dressing into the crevice, drizzle a teaspoon of olive oil, top with mushrooms, and heat as normal.

2.Heating options: if you keep your oven on, place it inside on any temperature below 200* an hour before the meal. Crockpot? Place it on top. You can even fill a shallow pan with hot water and place the hummus dish inside ala : “double boil”.

CHESTNUT & MUSHROOM WHITE WINE GNOCCHI

Velvety smooth and delicious, this elevated Yom Tov dish will truly make a statement.

Ingredients:

3-4 tablespoons oil

1 onion, thinly sliced

1 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon brown sugar

1 teaspoon black pepper

2 cloves garlic, chopped

7-8 fresh white mushrooms, sliced in quarters (or 1 16 oz. can sliced mushrooms)

1 3 oz. bag roasted chestnuts, sliced

2 tablespoons flour

1 ½ cups Tuscanini white wine

3 cups water

1 pack Tuscanini mini gnocchi (don’t precook)

Directions:

1. In a large saucepan, heat the oil over medium high heat. Add the onions, salt, brown sugar, and black pepper and saute until golden (about 10-15 minutes). Add the garlic, mushrooms, and chestnuts. Cook for 2-3 minutes until mushrooms are caramelized.

2. Stir in flour, mixing well. Add the wine and water and bring to a boil.

3. Add the mini gnocchis (straight from the package) and simmer on low until the mixture has thickened (about 5-7 minutes), stirring occasionally. Remove from heat and serve.

TIP: The liquid tends to absorb into the gnocchis. Feel free to add additional water until desired consistency when reheating.

DOUGHLESS POTATO ONION KNISHES

Skip the patchke, but don’t skip on the flavor. These doughless knishes have all the goodness you're looking for- minus the extra hassle.

Yield: About 15 Knishes

Ingredients:

1 medium onion, peeled and finely diced

¼ cup oil

1 tablespoon brown sugar

½ teaspoon salt

4 medium Idaho potatoes

¼ cup oil

4 eggs

½ c flour

1 tablespoon onion soup mix

1 tablespoon salt

1 teaspoon black pepper, optional

Cooking spray oil, for pans

Everything bagel seasoning or black sesame seeds, for topping

Directions:

1. Peel and cube the potatoes. Boil in water until fork tender. Drain and set aside.

2. In a frying pan, heat the oil and saute the onions, brown sugar, and salt on a low flame for about 20 minutes, until caramelized. Don’t rush the process, let the onions develop their natural sweet flavors.

3. Preheat oven to 400°.

4. In a large bowl, combine the drained potatoes, sauteed onions, oil, eggs, flour, onion soup mix, and salt and pepper. Loosely mash the potatoes with a fork or masher.

5. Using an immersion blender, blend the mixture until smooth (some lumps may remain).

6. Generously grease about 15 muffin tins with cooking spray. Fill the pans until just full with potato batter. Spray some additional cooking spray on top of each knish. Sprinkle with your topping of choice.

7. Bake at 400° for about 28-30 minutes until golden brown. If you like it crispier, you can spray with additional oil and return to the oven for another 5 minutes. Serve warm.

Tip: You can easily make this recipe with leftover mashed potatoes.

These knishes freeze great! Store in an airtight container.

HEARTY & SMOKY TOMATO BEEF CABBAGE SOUP

In the crisp cocoon of your Sukkah, enjoy a comforting bowl of this smoky, savory, and absolutely-delicious autumn soup.

Ingredients:

3-4 tablespoons oil

1 lb. beef stew, cubed (you can cut into smaller pieces)

1 -2 Knackwurst, roughly chopped (optional)

2 cloves crushed garlic

1 (16 oz.) bag shredded green cabbage

1 (14 oz.) can diced tomatoes

1 can tomato sauce

1 teaspoon tomato paste

6 cups water

2 tablespoons lemon juice

2-3 tablespoons brown sugar

2-3 tablespoons granulated sugar

½ teaspoon white pepper

1 teaspoon black pepper

½ teaspoon smoked paprika

½ teaspoon onion powder

1 ½ tablespoons salt

Red pepper flakes, optional

Directions:

1. Rinse meat and pat dry. In a 6-quart stockpot, heat oil and brown beef stew over medium heat for 2 minutes, stirring constantly.

2. Add the rest of the ingredients into the pan and stir to combine. Bring to a boil.

3. Reduce heat to low, cover and cook for about 1 ½-2 hours. If the mixture is too reduced, you can add water as desired. Serve hot.

TIP: If you prefer a sweeter soup, feel free to add more sugar according to your liking.

1) Wildflower honey: This is rich and robust honey, collected from various wildflowers, giving it a diverse and complex flavor profile.

2) Manuka honey: Originating from New Zealand, Manuka honey is known for its distinct taste and potential health benefits, including antibacterial properties.

3) Acacia honey: This lightcolored honey is derived from the nectar of acacia flowers, offering a mild and delicate sweetness.

4) Lavender honey: Gathered from lavender fields, this honey boasts a fragrant and floral taste that pairs beautifully with desserts and teas.

Now to focus on your question about honey being weight loss friendly, it is important to understand that while honey is a natural and unprocessed sweetener, it's essential to be

aware of its impact on weight loss. Contrary to some beliefs, honey is not a magic elixir for shedding pounds. In fact, it's even worse than sugar in some aspects. For those on weight loss journeys, it's essential to prioritize portion control and opt for healthier alternatives when possible. While on the topic of honey, I also want to tap into maple syrup and agave. For some reason, and I am not sure why that is (perhaps since it sounds natural?) people believe that these liquid sugars are healthy, and therefore don't realize the ramifications it may have on your weight. When one ingests sugars, specifically liquid sugars, we get a rapid sugar high, and that is never beneficial for anyone. So, the next time you are making pancakes with 100% natural maple syrup, or a beverage sweetened with agave, remember- these are liquid sugars, and in a way may be more problematic for you than typical table sugar. My sister recently bought an expensive wristwatch, that was marked by a brand-name and a price-tag to match. It wasn’t an impulsive purchase. Rather, she had done careful research until she settled on the brand and model that suited her needs.

Chava kept me updated on the research process, the vetting process, and finally – the grand purchase. She was so happy with her new timepiece and I rejoiced along with her.

Nothing prepared me for the frazzled phone call that followed shortly on the heels of that long-awaited purchase. Chava was distraught. Her beautiful, top-quality wristwatch had simply malfunctioned. It wasn’t a matter of just changing the battery. The watch didn’t work. Something had gone wrong in its mechanism and it was doubtful that it could be fully repaired.

“I’m sure there’s a warranty on this,” I reassured my sister. “After all, it’s a brand-name company and the price isn’t something to sneeze at. Reach out to them and see what they can offer.”

Chava agreed with me. This wasn’t just a ten-dollar wristwatch purchased at the corner variety shop. It was a top-quality piece that should be backed by its manufacturers.

Thus armed with my reassurance and her own indignation, Chava placed the call.

“How can I help you?” the sales representative inquired politely.

“I bought a watch a mere few weeks ago,” Chava explained. “Something is wrong with this piece. The watch doesn’t work!”

“Has it been subjected to drastic temperature changes?” the representative inquired. “Has it been crushed or punctured?”

“Wonderful,” Chava replied. “Will you send me a replacement or a refund?”

The representative chuckled. “Ma’am, warranties and claims are processed online. Please mark down our website so that you can process your refund im mediately.”

“Uh…I don’t have any internet access,” Chava said. “On principle.”

The representative was silent for a very, very long moment.

“Hello, are you still there?” Chava asked after the silence had stretched a tad too long.

“Yes, ma’am,” was the serious reply. “I sincerely apologize. Warranty claims can only be processed on line. It’s our policy and there’s no way to circumvent it.” The representative fell silent and then, with an earnest tone of voice, she continued, “But I must tell you some thing. Life is much better off-line.”

The watch was a goner…but the timely message re mains spot-on!

Results of Most Recent Review & Financial Audit

The most recent review of SHIRA Association, Inc. Focus Area Il shows that Shira Head Start is in compliance with all Head Start performance standards, laws, regulations, and policy requirements. Strengths are in family literacy and family engagement. Its library and workshops are culturally oriented to the Hasidic community it serves. Its partnership with Cool Culture strengthens parenting and parent child supports. Teachers provide high quality learning experiences. The most recent financial audit for the year ending December 31, 2022 shows no findings.

Health Services. Children receiving medical exams 100%. Children completing dental exams 100%. Daily screenings and health checks were strictly enforced. All staff had to be vaccinated for COVID by order of the NYC Department of Health.

Parent Engagement Activities. Parents play an important part in decision making at Shira Head Start. The Policy Council is a group of elected parents and community representatives who share responsibilities for making and approving program policies with the Board of Directors. All the parents are members of the parent committee and meet monthly. They plan activities and workshops, volunteer and participate in Home Visits and Parent Teacher Conferences and input in curriculum, menu and program planning. Monthly Parent Meetings, Yoga and Pilates, Library and Workshops and Demonstrations were well attended.

Agency's Efforts to Achieve School Readiness Goals & Prepare Children for Kindergarten. Shira Head Start's goal is to prepare students for continued success in school. Early in the year our children are given medical and nutrition evaluations, dental, auditory, speech and development and social-emotional screenings. Teachers provide high—quality learning experiences and create a nurturing and responsive classroom environment. The Creative Curriculum is implemented, promoting language readiness, cognitive development, early reading and math skills and social, emotional and physical development. Three times a year these areas are measured using the Head Start ELOF to enable us to track the children's readiness for Kindergarten and enable our teachers to develop individualized strategies to help our children increase their skills. The results are used in curriculum and planning decisions to promote school readiness goals. The results of our assessment data represent significant gains for all children. School Readiness Spring 2023: All four year old's tested met school readiness kindergarten entry goals Children Meeting or Exceeding Widely Held Expectations: Physical 97%, Social/Emotional 95%, Language 93%, Cognitive 95%, Literacy 95%, Math 96%.

Are you ready for Week Two?

You will only need: Scissors Glue Kraft It Pages

Cut out the eagle and the יבצכ ץר on that page. Save for later.

Take the page with the Teal blue lines. Be careful not to cut into the edge.

Cut the page along the black line. Fold in half (there is a light grey line to guide you.)

Cut on black lines like “slices”. Be careful not to cut all the way through it and leave the edge attached.

Next, cut out the light blue strips. Now, thread the strips into the Teal blue page that you have sliced, by weaving under and over.

If you started the rst strip under and then over, the next strip-do over and then under to create the checkerboard e ect.

Do this until all light blue strips have been weaved.

Glue the edges so the strips dont slip out. Glue the eagle on top of the woven page.

Bonus: If you want to add a black border to complete the look, use electrical tape. Fold half of the tape down to the back of the page.

This should give you a thin, nice border. And save it in a safe place. Next week we will continue.
