Rabbi Goldberg of the Kletzkin Yeshivah calls Martin to ask for Mr. Perl’s regular donation. Martin doesn’t understand the importance of a yeshivah and why Mr. Perl gave so generously to it.
After knocking for a while at Michoel’s door and not being answered, Hinda and Mali decide to sit and watch the house for a bit. Mali realizes that she’s feeling closer to her mother than she’s felt in a long time.
Dov hesitantly asks Hinda if Simi can come to their home to recuperate after her birth, and Hinda agrees.
CHAPTER
Martin tried again to read the words in the handwritten letter, but he wasn’t able to understand the hasty writing. What was she writing here? He could barely figure out the “I don’t understand what happened to you,” and, “someone called and asked about Weisskopf.”
Oh, right, Weisskopf. What time was it in Boro Park now? Maybe it was a good idea to try calling there again.
He hadn’t yet had the time to calculate whether his call would be waking someone up when it was already answered. “Hello?”
“Hello, Shimon?”
“Yes. Who is this?”
“I’m a friend of Michoel Perl, from Eretz Yisrael.”
“Oh,” Weisskopf said tersely.
“Can I ask you a question?”
“You can always try.”
“Have you had any contact with Michoel Perl recently? I wanted to speak to him. But he left a message that if anyone was looking for him, they should reach out to you.”
“Really?” The voice remained cool. “Yes.”
“Get back to him and tell him that if he cuts off ties, I have nothing to do with him or with anyone who might be looking for him.”
“He cut off ties with you, too?”
“I don’t know about the ‘too.’ I know only about myself.”
“It looks like he did it to everyone,” Martin muttered. “Who are you?” Something in Shimon’s voice had thawed a bit.
“A friend of his, like I told you.”
“A friend? From where?”
“From his neighborhood in Yerushalayim. There are a few other people here who are worried about him, because since he traveled to Mexico three months ago, he hasn’t come back.”
Shimon was silent for a long moment. “That’s very

Ken Gibbs President & CEO Maimonides Healthstrange,” he said finally. “Very strange.”
“Why is it strange?”
“Because I know that he is at home right now.”
Subconsciously, Martin glanced around him in alarm. But the room was as empty as always. “You know that he’s at home?” he asked cautiously. The words sounded heavy and strange to his own ears. “Now, at this moment?”
“I don’t know about this moment,” Shimon said slowly, as if checking something. Martin felt a strong urge to crawl under the computer chair and disappear. “But in recent days he has certainly been there.”
“How do you know?”
“Because my computer is connected to his house, and it shows that there is activity there.”
“How does it know that? An infrared camera?”
“No, no cameras. It’s an electrical connection, which picks up activity there. And there certainly has been activity there recently, on an almost constant basis.”
“I know that as well,” Martin said confidently, since he’d noticed “activity there” even before he’d entered the house. “I saw from the outside of his house a few times. It looks like the air conditioners go on and off, the lights go on and off, an electric curtain moves…”
“Oh, that’s nothing. Michoel always has those things in place—even before he traveled. His house is used to operating as if he’s there.” Shimon chuckled, and Martin tried to decide if he liked the guy or not.
“Is he afraid of intruders?” he asked.
“Well, that too. But he also doesn’t like that his house should look lifeless when he leaves town for a while. He claims that stagnation is the worst thing for all the things in the house, all the systems. And after he once was away for two months, he realized that there had been some serious damage that he had to fix…”
“Oh, so he took into account that this would be a long trip?”
“But it wasn’t supposed to be this long,” Shimon conceded. “Three months! Who did you say you are?”
“A friend from the neighborhood.”
“You have a Canadian accent.”
“That’s right,” Martin admitted. “I’m originally from
there.”
“And now you live in Yerushalayim?” “Yes.”
“And you’re sure you haven’t seen him all this time? Because even though, as I told you, theoretically his house is meant to operate on its own, recently things have been going on and off there outside of the regular settings. That’s why I’m telling you that maybe he is home.”
“Well, what I’ve seen is never a regular pattern,” Martin objected. “I’ve been tracking it. The lights go on and off at random times, and so does the air conditioner. But the intercom at the door gives the same silly recording every time. I assume most people realize that something is strange, especially when they come twice and hear the same response, no matter what they say.”
“It’s because of the intercom that you realized that something isn’t right, and that he’s not there?” Shimon asked.
“Yes.”
“Okay, good, so when you meet him again, tell him he needs to take care of that. By the way, what about his cell phone? He leaves all kinds of messages there, and they are not regular at all.” Was he being cynical, or did it just sound that way? “Based on what?”
“Based on who calls, and when they call. You didn’t try his cell?”
“I don’t have his cell number.”
“Oh,” Shimon said. “I already thought that you’d be his driver the next time he goes to Canada. He never planned such a thing with you?”
“His driver?” Martin was puzzled. “When he came to America for fundraising trips, that was my job. But I think we’re more or less done with each other.”
“Why do you think so?” Mr. Monsenego had said something similar. Had Michoel gotten into a fight with everyone, and then disappeared? That didn’t sound good. Actually, it sounded awful. Wait a minute. He hadn’t fought with Hinda, as far as it seemed. She might think he was upset at her, but it
really wasn’t true.
“There was something unpleasant between us, and since then he hasn’t answered any of my calls. I mean, he answers me with his regular recording of, ‘Shimon, I’m happy you called, even though you were angry during our last conversation. I’ll try to get back to you as soon as I can.’”
Martin scratched his forehead. “Why were you angry at him?” he finally asked.
“Oh, that is such a tactful question,” Weisskopf replied. “Let’s just say we had a few disagreements about my salary, and we ended off that if we wouldn’t reach an understanding, he’d use a different driver next time.”
“Were you always his driver?”
“On recent trips to America, yes. After his visit to Mexico, he was supposed to continue on to New York, and I was supposed to drive him around. But before he came, I told him gently that I’d heard that the rates had gone up, and so my rates would too, and he didn’t like that.”
It didn’t make sense that Mr. Perl had disappeared because of that, right?
“It’s strange,” Martin said. “A voicemail message especially for you… I wonder what message Hinda hears when she calls him.”
“Wait, you know his niece, Hinda, too?” Shimon was surprised. “They’re from Haifa, aren’t they?”
“Maybe. I don’t really know them; I just saw them once when they came here.”
“So why did you call here to find out about him, when you have her over there in Israel?”
“Because I know that she knows nothing about where he is. And besides, you don’t sound any less clear because you’re thousands of miles away.” Martin laughed.
“True. But I don’t know anything about his whereabouts either, as you see. Sorry to disappoint you.”
“He also instructed that people should contact you, you know.”
“He instructed that people should contact me? When did he do that?”
“Well, he left a message like that.” Martin shifted in
his seat. “He said that if no one knows where he is for more than two months, they should call you.”
“Probably because I helped him build this system,” the American replied. “And I can keep track of what is happening in his house from here. But right now, I have no information about him.”
“Maybe your father knows something?”
“My father? Why should my father have more information than me?”
“Because he’s the cousin, and you’re just the cousin’s son…” Martin said faintly.
Shimon laughed out loud. “It’s clear you’re just a neighborhood friend, and don’t really know the family,” he said. “Michoel has liked me ever since I was little, and when I grew up, our bond became even stronger. I really don’t think there are things about him that my father knows that I don’t. “Anyway.” His voice suddenly became very practical. “I’ll keep checking what’s doing at home there. Because the movements are strange and not according to his regular plan. For example, there will always be a span of at least half an hour from when a light goes on until it goes off. I see that recently, the lights haven’t been working according to that rule. It’s as if someone is living there without caring about the system at all.”
Martin wondered what would happen if now he’d stick out his hand to switch on the light behind him, and then he’d turn it off a few seconds later. “So it looks like Michoel did come back?”
“That’s what I thought at first. But now that I’m thinking back to these past two weeks, I don’t think so. If he would have come back, he would have disconnected the system. And he didn’t.”
Night fell on the house. Martin, who was now aware that Weisskopf was also aware that something strange was going on the house—as was Hinda, and Monsenego, and the man from the yeshivah, and maybe a few others, had no desire to turn on the lights.
He sat on the sofa morosely. How long would it take for them to decide to break down the door and see, once and for all, what was wrong with their lonely

family member? He, in their place, would have done it already.
He got up, leaving the letter on the couch, and paced the house from side to side, from room to room. The huge light shining in the hallway made his shadow bounce around at impossible angles on the floor and the walls.
They were not breaking down the door because of the sophisticated system Mr. Perl had crafted. But not only because of that. If it would have continued working, then Hinda and all the others would have figured out that something strange was happening— as he, Martin, had figured out—and they would have realized there was a problem.
But because of his deception and the act he was putting on, they were still relatively unworried.
Look, Monsenego himself had already thought about hiring private investigators, and it was only because he was sure that “Yosef Kirschenbaum” was looking into things that he wasn’t sending anyone just yet.
Who knew what was happening to Michoel Perl this whole time—if indeed something was still happening to him in This World?
And was he, Martin, to blame for it?
Martin got up to walk the house again, knowing that the feelings of guilt washing over him would not allow him to sleep. He distractedly opened cabinets, and took out a photo album with a black cover. The first photo on the page caught his eye. There was Perl, a bit younger, standing next to a chareidi bachur in a long black coat. The boy had light peyos curling down in front of his ears. Behind the two of them were mountains with bluish peaks, and all around them were fields of yellowish stalks. Were they stalks of wheat? Or was that how corn looked? Martin was a city boy; he really had no idea.
“Shimon Weisskopf and me, on Rubin’s farm, Dallas,
Texas,” was the caption in English.

Michoel: Daddy entered the room and smiled at him. “You didn’t eat dinner,” he said. He liked Daddy’s voice. But he didn’t want to eat.
“My throat hurts,” he said hoarsely, looking at his hands.
Oy. His hands were shaking. And they were also wrinkled here and there. The children in the park laughed at him because of them.
“My hands also hurt,” he added, and then coughed. Too many things had been hurting him lately. He was sick.
Daddy and Mommy always took care of him. Mommy was worried that he wasn’t eating or sleeping, and Daddy said he couldn’t go on this way.
Sometimes, he cried at night. Mommy would come. Or Daddy. Sometimes a neighbor. He didn’t know what they said to him, but in the end, he would calm down. And in the morning, he remembered nothing; he only recalled that he had been sad, without even knowing why. It was like a black kind of sadness. Emptiness. Why wasn’t he allowed to go to the park? There were children there. And in the park, there was sun. It wasn’t black there. Or maybe it was? He had once seen a black sun; it had burned for many days in front of him. Then, at the end, it had gone, and left him this empty blackness.
But in the park, there was a nice sun. He remembered it. Mommy would walk with him hand in hand there, and everything would smile down at them… Why hadn’t Mommy come to him for such a long time now?

“Do one thing every day that scares you.” – Eleanor Roosevelt
I would wager that Eleanor Roosevelt was not referring to speaking to other people in your class or to your neighbor in the hallway, but for some people those seemingly simple acts can be very scary.
Did you ever notice the child in the recess yard walking around by himself? What about the girl who never has a partner on line?
Or the boy who does not have any play dates after school? Is it shyness or something more than that?
In today’s high-paced and increasingly technologicallybased society, we are seeing an increase in children with social skills deficits. Some children might simply be shy and experiencing some pain from being teased or left out is a normal part of social
development. However, for some socially awkward children, ostracism may be a regular part of their daily lives.
Katharine Beals, a professor at University of Pennsylvania, recently authored a book entitled “Raising a Left-Brain Child in a Right-Brain World.” In her book, she argues that “bright, quirky, socially awkward children” are at a disadvantage in today’s schools because contemporary education emphasizes group learning and class participation. Some socially awkward are in fact the stereotypical “nerd” – children who process things linearly, think abstractly and logically, attune themselves to verbal rather than nonverbal communication, and prefer to work independently.
Beals argues that these children, who might call nebbish or nebs, need help from parents and schools to help them make their way in the world. So, what can parents do to help the socially awkward elementary school student?
Here are some suggestions for helping your school age child acclimate to the social environment:
• Provide a variety of social activities. There are so many social opportunities that are available to children – shul groups, baseball leagues, art classes, play dates, park outings, and many more. Giving your child the opportunity to explore his social behavior in these different contexts will help him expand his social repertoire.
• Consider a social skills coach. Social skills coaches can help children learn about nonverbal
communication and teamwork. The goal of coaches is to provide children with a safe environment to practice their still emerging communication skills.
• Initiate and practice pro-social behavior at home. Even if you are not a social skills coach, you have the ability to help your child understand proper social behavior. Talk about the ways that you greet people, how you can guess what they are feeling based on their facial expressions, and ways to initiate conversations. The more aware your child is of social behavior, the more likely he will be to practice it.
While children who are extremely socially awkward will often be ostracized by their peers in elementary school, middle school is when a child’s social development becomes more apparent. In order to demonstrate their maturity, many girls will interact with their peers in more adult-like ways. This means that middle school girls who fail to mature at the same pace as their peers will begin to feel left out and not accepted.
Of course, there are many different levels of maturity among middle school girls and therefore it is hard to determine what is problematic. To that end, I have compiled a list of warning signs of poor social development for middle school girls:
• A lack of consistency in
friendships
• No friends
• Unable to set limits with friendships and therefore cannot identify her own likes and dislikes
• Unable to coordinate her own playdates; parents still required to set them up
• Poor eye contact
• Poor hygiene
• Disinterest in extracurricular activities that had once been appealing
• Severe unhappiness when returning home from school
There are multiple reasons why a middle school girl struggles socially. The simplest reason is that she needs to be taught social skills that come naturally to other girls her age. Alternatively, she might be suffering from a mild form of a nonverbal learning disorder (NVLD), which can cause difficulty reading social cues. Or, she might have Aspergers Syndrome which is often called a high-functioning autism that can result in an inability to read nonverbal communication. All three of these situations can cause children to have social anxiety which can lead to further awkward behavior.
Here are some suggestions of how to help middle school girls who are struggling socially:
• Social skills group. There are social skills groups run by professionals who can help teenagers master appropriate behavior and interactions. While at first, these groups might be
intimidating to children who are socially awkward, with time they provide a community of people who help each other learn and grow.
• Reward proper personal hygiene. Hygiene is an easy “social skill” to help your child master because it is concrete rather than abstract. Create a chart with your child with all of different elements of personal hygiene (teeth-brushing, showering, nail clipping, deodorant, hair-combing). Then, set goals with your daughter that when achieved she gets rewarded for. While she might not be aware of her lack of grooming, her peers will certainly notice the change.
• Help her find children with similar interests. If your daughter loves art or music, consider signing her up for an after school activity (preferably not offered by her school at first) in which she can meet other children who share her interests. These shared interests will create a common ground and help your daughter bond with her peers.
• Do not “go back to school” yourself. As painful as it is to watch your child struggle socially, if you step in to smooth over socially awkward moments, your daughter will not learn how to do this herself. Therefore, unless the situation is painful or dangerous, keep out of the situation while it is happening. Feel free to talk about it with your daughter before and after, but getting involved at the moment will only stunt her social progress.

Recap: Many workers at ProMedical Labs don’t show up to work after hearing on the news that Dr. Bloom’s investors have pulled out-which means Dr. Bloom will be forced to declare bankruptcy. Dr. Bloom tries to convince them that he’s going to find a way, but they’re skeptical.
Mr. and Mrs. Grossman give statements about the break-in to the police. Lieutenant Andrews tells them that they’ve questioned the injured security agent, who regained consciousness.
“The Investor was in a good mood. Even, on a high, perhaps.
His walk was jaunty as he entered his office building. Martha, his newest secretary, watched him with suspicion. Why was her boss so happy?
“Hey, Kevin, did you see the latest?”
The Investor asked his chief financial officer. Kevin blinked.
“Were we in the news?” he asked cautiously.
“Nope, we weren’t. But that dirty guy Bloom from ProMedical Labs is back in the dirt now, and he’s never getting up again!”
The Investor laughed at Kevin’s slightly horrified look.
“Don’t look like that, Kevin. You know the guy was trying to kill his patients, don’t you? Didn’t you read the article in the Times?”
Kevin tried to relax his facial muscles. “I sure did, boss. That’s one guy that could have buried us, huh?”
“Yeah, but we buried him instead!”
The Investor chuckled heartily.
Kevin laughed along, weakly. What was his boss talking about? What had their pharmaceuticals business done to Dr. Bloom? Hadn’t his investors decided to pull out due to his unethical behavior?
“It’s good news, Kevin,” The Investor said abruptly. “The bad guy is finished. And the good guys can go on with business as usual.”
Kevin nodded. “We’ll keep saving the world,” he said.
“Yeah.” Some of his gaiety dissipated, the Investor walked off toward his office.
Kevin shook his head, watching him go. He knew that his boss had made them a leader in the industry, the ones who made sure every law was passed favorably for them. Their company corralled all the other drug companies together to form a very powerful group.
And Dr. Bloom was a thorn in their side.
But how had the Investor buried Dr. Bloom? A small suspicion sprouted in Kevin’s mind, despite him trying to brush away the thought. The Investor hadn’t really meant that he was involved. He’d simply meant that the drug companies’ interests had trumped.
That was a good thing, because Dr. Bloom hadn’t been ethical in his practice. Right?
This is none of your business, Kevin. Just go back to the finances.

Jack read every single article that referenced the ProMedical saga that he could get his eyes on.
The turn of events had made him dizzy. From his boss flying off to find a wonderful alternative investment to ProMedical, to Mr. Grossman’s crashing back home with the news of the break-in and the alternative investment being a scam, to the
inevitable abrupt decision to drop ProMedical like a carton of junk, nothing at the G&D Group had been
As much as he’d been on the fence whether or not sticking with ProMedical was a good idea, he winced at the headlines he was reading nevertheless.
“After Unethical Practices Discovered, ProMedical Set to Declare Bankruptcy”
“In Removing Support, Allegations against Medical Practice Revived”
As if the libelous reports had had anything to do with Mr. Grossman’s decision to pull out! He’d done it only and exclusively because his nose had been forced to the wall.
Jack sighed irritably. There was nothing they could do for the truth anymore.

The warm scent of butternut squash soup filled the small apartment and wafted out the door, greeting Avrumi as he walked in. He inhaled deeply, letting the richness in.
“Smells so good, Esther Mindy,” he said.
“Thanks,” she smiled from her perch at the stove. She was wearing a bright pink scarf tied around her head, which actually went surprisingly well with her cream complexion. “You know you say that every night, right?” Her laugh tinkled.
Avrumi smiled back. “Well, what can I do if your food smells good every night?”
Esther Mindy basked in his compliments. He didn’t need to know that it took her endless phone calls to her mother to make sure she was doing it right. It was enough that he enjoyed the results.
“Butternut squash is so perfect for soup,” she bubbled as she placed two bowls on the table. “It’s like so
creamy and rich when it’s blended. Like Hashem made it just so we could have soup.”
Avrumi nodded, though he didn’t really understand her excitement. What was the big deal? Soup was soup, even if it was good.
“How was your day, by the way?” Esther Mindy belatedly remembered to ask the important question. Avrumi sighed.
“It wasn’t good?” Esther Mindy asked disappointedly.
“Well, visiting a police station isn’t as much fun as they make it sound in the books,” Avrumi said. “Although it was interesting.”
“What happened there? You didn’t tell me you were going to sit in on the interrogations!”
“Nah,” Avrumi said. “No interrogations. Just my mother and father going over their stories. And then the police officer said that that guy who was hurt just regained consciousness.”
“And?”
“And to make a long story short, after all the questioning they did, the police think they might know who it was that did the break-in.”
“So are they going to catch him?”
“They’re not sure yet that it was him. Basically, the only real proof they have is a hair that they found in my parents’ driveway.”
“How in the world is a hair proof of anything?”
“They tested it forensically for the DNA. And it matches to a certain person they have on record, which matches the description the security agent gave of what he was able to see behind the ski mask.”
Esther Mindy shivered. “It’s so crazy that you’re involved in all of this.”
“I know.” Avrumi rubbed his thumb against the handle of his spoon.
“Anyway, Bruchi called me afterwards.”
“I thought you went to kollel afterwards?”
“Yeah. But she called while I was on my way.”
“And?”
“And she wants to make a family Shabbos this week, we should all eat together by my mother’s house. She feels like my mother would appreciate it, that we all come to show her support. So Bruchie’s arranging all the food and setup, but everyone’s contributing. She wanted to know what we could make.”
“Sure, I’ll be happy to make something,” Esther Mindy said instantly. She twirled the end of her scarf around her finger as she asked, “But why didn’t she just call me?” Avrumi didn’t say anything. Instead, he concentrated intently on the orange liquid in the bowl in front of him.
Esther Mindy studied his face. Why was Avrumi so uncomfortable?
Esther Mindy had had so much fun schmoozing with her sisters-inlaw during her engagement, sheva brachos and the recent simchos in the family. Why wouldn’t Bruchie call her directly, then?
Suddenly, it clicked in Esther Mindy’s mind as she remembered the last time Avrumi had sported the same uncomfortable look.
“Sweet potato cheesecake?!” her mother-in-law had asked in horror. And Avrumi had gotten just as awkward as he was acting now. What did Bruchie’s avoidance have to do with her mother-in-law’s opinion of her, though?
“Don’t tell me this is also because I ordered your mother sweet potato cheesecake!” she exclaimed. Avrumi didn’t say anything.
Esther Mindy suddenly understood, for the first time in her life, why the
expression, “to gnash one’s teeth,” existed. The frustration she felt was definitely worthy of teeth-gnashing.
“It’s nothing to do with cheesecake,” he finally said. “Bruchie doesn’t know about that story.”
“So which story does she know about? That I wore gym shoes to work? So now Bruchie’s scared to ask me what I can contribute because she’s afraid I’ll donate sunflowers for the décor? Oh, please!
I was the G.O. and head counselor kid in Bnos Shoshana. I know what classy means.” She pushed away the little birdie whispering to her that it had been all Nechy’s and her mother’s ideas that she, Esther Mindy, just had to implement.
“Bruchie’s really close to my mother,” Avrumi said. “She probably knows everything.”
What everything? What had she done wrong already? She fingered her pink scarf again and flushed. It was kind of funny to talk about being classy and ask what she’d done wrong wearing a scarf like that.
“But anyhow, what do you think you can make?”
Esther Mindy felt like muttering, “Maybe I don’t want to do anything for the Shabbos.”
“I’ll be happy to make dessert,” she said. That way she could impress her in-laws with her culinary talents easily. She just hoped she wouldn’t have to make too many batches until she got perfect results.
“So I’ll tell Bruchie,” Avrumi said, putting down his spoon as he finished his bowl of soup.
Esther Mindy got up to serve the main course.
“I can call Bruchie and tell her,” she said.
“Okay. If you want,” Avrumi said. Oh, why had the criminal decided to break into her in-laws’ home and
destroy her own happiness in the process, Esther Mindy wondered bitterly. Then she remembered the ill-fated Shabbos seudah they’d eaten at her mother-in-law’s house the week before and winced. Well, maybe it wasn’t the burglar’s fault after all.
Lips tightly pursed, she served the chicken lo mein.
Avrumi ate it in silence. It didn’t look like he was tasting what he ate.
Esther Mindy speared a piece of baby corn, looking bleakly at the food she’d worked so hard to make. She willed the tears not to come. She was not a baby, even if she was all of nineteen years old.
As she chewed the vegetable blandly, she remembered the night of her vort.
Esther Mindy had been the most ravishing kallah. Her five-thousand dollar dress was woven subtly in gold thread, perfectly tailored to her figure. She wore matching three-inch white heels, and the slight shimmer in the highlighter on her cheeks brought out the shine of her eyes.
Her mother and mother-in-law had stood together, talking about how stunning Esther Mindy looked and how she was such a wonderful kallah.
Esther Mindy had pretended not to hear, as she kept herself busy welcoming all her thousands of friends with her trademark milliondollar smile.
Of course, every time her mother-inlaw had brought over another family member to make introductions, Esther Mindy immediately turned all her attention and charm to her mother-in-law. And she could clearly see how bedazzled her mother-in-law was, in the peacock-proud way her mother-in-law was showing her off.
When her mother-in-law’s sisters said, loudly enough for Esther Mindy to hear, “Oh, you got herself a gorgeous kallah, Miriam,” her
mother-in-law smiled and nodded, bursting with satisfaction and pride. She overheard her mother-in-law saying it to her friends, too, “Oh, my kallah was a real catch,” she said and chuckled.
Where had all that pride gone?
Esther Mindy miserably pushed her noodles around the plate. She’d never known what it meant not to be the top. Not to be admired and fawned upon.
Now she was getting her first taste of disapproval, ever. She didn’t particularly like the taste.
Avrumi watched her from the corner of his eye. He saw her angst, but he felt helpless to do anything about it.
The rest of the meal passed in silence.
“I’m going out to Maariv, okay?” Avrumi said as he got up to leave.
Esther Mindy wanted to say something, but her throat was stuck. Instead, she nodded, beginning to clear the plates.
Avrumi turned the knob on the door, then looked back at his wife.
“I really don’t mind if you call Bruchie. I don’t think she’ll really mind either.”
Esther Mindy didn’t respond, so Avrumi shrugged and left.
Finally, Esther Mindy let the tears flow. She felt so degraded, like a princess expelled from the palace. From being the pride and joy of the Grossman family, she’d become an outsider. And for what? The wrong job. A pair of shoes. Being created with wacky tastes instead of classy ones.
Ridiculous. She shook her head and reached for her phone, pressing speed dial 2. Her mother always knew what to do. It was high time Esther Mindy told her what was really going on.
Sunday-Monday December 5-6, Klal Yisroel donates generously to the “Little Heart Beats” Campaign
New York – This coming Motzei Shabbos, Parshas Va’yetzei, a vital campaign will go live on behalf of thousands of children living with congenital heart disease.
Never heard of Yameitz Libechu? Thank Hashem! This means that neither you, nor a loved one gave birth to a child with a cardiac abnormality. Yameitz Libechu is the first number parents of these children dial, and it’s the number that remains on their speed-dial indefinitely.
You might not be aware that approximately one out of every one hundred babies are born with a cardiac abnormality. So, you can assume that among your neighbors, your shul, and your children's classmates, at least one child is suffering from a possibly lifethreatening, congenital heart defect. Yameitz Libechu is there to support them every step of the way. Thousands of children in your community with congenital heart disease owe their everyday survival to Yameitz Libechu.
The usual joy felt when a baby is born is overshadowed by the frightening diagnosis of congenital heart disease. Parents with little or no medical background face a diagnosis that leaves their newborn's life hanging in the balance.
Yameitz Libechu is a life-saving organization of knowledgeable professionals providing services to children with all types of cardiac abnormalities, helping the parents shoulder this overwhelming responsibility throughout their turbulent journey. Every heart is unique, and so is each diagnosis. There are over forty types of heart defects, and each one can be treated in various ways by different specialists and in different hospitals. Getting the proper guidance from knowledgeable sources is crucial to ensure the best outcome.
Usually, there are many options to consider, with not much time to make decisions. Who to talk to? Which doctor to go to? Are we making the right decision? Is this the best option for our child? Is it true that our child doesn't stand a chance of living a normal life? What to do with the other children? Financial obstacles. Insurance bureaucracy. And so much more. So many questions!!
Only one answer: Yameitz Libechu
For nineteen years, Yameitz Libechu has been providing support to patients and families from the moment of diagnosis, for as long as needed.
This campaign will help Yameitz Libechu continue their lifesaving mission. To contribute to this vital campaign please visit www.Charidy.com/YLhearts or call 718-540-5716.
This past week, a spiritual wave swept across the globe. Tens of thousands of women and girls from such diverse locations as the tristate area, Israel, Europe, Canada, South Africa, and Australia filled the seats of auditoriums, halls, shuls, and private homes, mesmerized by another intriguing, professional Bnos Melochim Worldwide Event. Entitled Urah Kevodi, Awaken My Glory, it came after a three-year break due to COVID. And it was well worth waiting for! The struggle for clarity about current issues has been mounting, sweeping Jewish communities everywhere.
The program began with divrei bracha from HaRav Malkiel Kotler, Rosh Yeshivas BMG Lakewood. It was followed by a smorgasbord of powerful speeches devoted to acquiring a better understanding of the mitzva of kisui rosh, covering a married woman’s hair. In addition, it addressed the conflicts and contradictions encountered in the current sheitel industry. Stirring messages about women’s power and ability to accomplish things in this world through their level of tznius were delivered by Rabbi Eytan Feiner and Rabbi Ephraim Eliyahu Shapiro. Rabbi Efraim Rothchild clarified what da’as Torah means and the importance of listening to da’as Torah. We were privileged to hear from several renowned speakers. Rebbetzin Rina Tarshish focused on the Chasam Sofer’s teachings of why Rivka cloaked Yaakov in Eisav’s garb. “He was a person of emes, so only when he wore the clothes of sheker could he possibly lie to his father.” She emphasized that what we wear and choose to cover our heads with affects our very being. Rebbetzin Esther Halberstadt described the concerns with naturalizing one’s sheitel and outlined ways to avoid them. Mrs. Chava Koenig, head of Tehilas Bais Yaakov Seminary, spoke about Sara Imeinu’s beauty. “She was internal to perfection. If the shleimus of the neshamah shines through the guf to such a degree, then beauty is a value and gets mentioned in the eulogy.”
At a stimulating roundtable discussion, well-known speakers Mrs. Baila Friedmann, Mrs. Tehila Gailer and Mrs. Rivky Friedman candidly explored commonly asked questions that many of us have but don’t dare to ask.
Mrs. Friedmann gave a clear-cut explanation of what halacha defines as attractive versus provocative. She explained how the laws of tznius are meant to preserve our essence by likening this to someone who buys an expensive Lexus sports car and fills it with diesel fuel. He tells the man at the pump, “It’s my car, and I can do what I want with it.” In truth, not following the manufacturer’s instructions will ruin the car and cause it to malfunction on the road, becoming a danger to ourselves and others. That’s how we have to view the mitzvos of tznius.
As Mrs. Gailer explained, for flowers to blossom, the gardener needs to tend to their roots. For women, being careful with modesty is caring for our roots, our core. It’s knowing that what we do has a mesorah. We are attached to an eitz chaim, not a loose leaf blowing in the wind, just following what “everyone” does. In her words, “If a whole table of people laughs at a joke, are you going to laugh when you didn’t think it was funny?”
During their discussion, the women called upon Rav Sa’adya Gramma to clarify how one knows which rabbonim to follow. His clear answer left no room for doubt: “Halachic authorities are those who have reached a certain level in yediyas v’havonas haTorah, Torah lishma, and kinyonei Torah. A person who has fulfilled certain conditions is ra’uy to pasken what the halacha is. How do we know who the gedolei hador are? R’ Chaim Shmulevitz gives a siman: Whoever you see Klal Yisroel turning to, that person becomes the manhig, the gadol. So too, with halachic authorities.”
Of course, personal stories always enhance a discussion. Chavi Bauman’s decision to cut her sheitel at the very moment her husband was saved from a horrific car accident was fascinating to hear about. Well-known singer and voice teacher Malky Giniger spoke of her deep achrayus to be a role model to the thousands of her students and of immediate action following inspiration.
The audience enjoyed a moving musical composition. Its powerful refrain in the name of Rav Meir Shapiro zt”l, “Have we done enough to ensure that Torah will endure?” moved many to tears.
Events always evoke many comments. Fingering the colorful handout at the event, Penina from Arizona said, “This is such pleasant reading! It makes me want to make a change. It’s just so real. Everyone can see their own struggles there. It really speaks to me!” Mrs. Kahan from Yerushalayim swung her arm around her teenage daughter as they left the arena. “I am so grateful to Bnos Melochim. They do the work for me, explaining sensitive questions about tznius to my daughter.” An excited attendee from Lakewood gushed, “Thank you so much for the timely inspiration. I am a kallah and am having my first sheitel appointment tomorrow night!”
Truly, Urah Kevodi achieved its initial goal of sparking interest and discussion about tznius topics across the globe. The presentation, the song, and the speeches awakened and stirred the heart. Now the real work begins.

Looking for straightforward advice to set your health on a path toward wellness instead of disease? My recent interview is for you. I discussed several fundamental health principles that virtually everyone can integrate into their lives to achieve better health.
It can feel overwhelming to make positive lifestyle changes, but when you make them one step at a time it’s much more manageable. The secret is that even small changes add up to meaningful health improvements over time, especially when you know where to focus your energy. Here, I’ve detailed several examples where a relatively small “investment” in terms of lifestyle changes will lead to major health rewards.
1.Stop eating vegetable oils — Linoleic acid is the primary fat found in polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), including vegetable/seed oils. It accounts for about 90% of dietary omega-6 intake. Examples of seed oils high in omega-6 include soybean, cottonseed, sunflower, rapeseed (canola), corn and safflower.
Omega-6 is considered to be proinflammatory because of the linoleic acid, which will radically increase oxidative free radicals and cause mitochondrial dysfunction. While omega-6 fats must be balanced with omega-3 fats to not be harmful, most Americans consume far more omega-6 than omega-3.
Most of the omega-6 people eat, including seed oils, has been damaged and oxidized through processing. The oxidized omega-6 develops lipid hydroperoxides, which rapidly degenerate into oxidized linoleic acid metabolites (OXLAMs). OXLAMs can cause a host of problems in your body.
· Cytotoxic and genotoxic
· Mutagenic
· Carcinogenic
Metabolic dysfunction can also occur, while OXLAMs are also toxic to the liver and are associated with inflammation, fibrosis and fatty liver disease in humans. As researchers further noted in the journal Nutrients, “In addition, a few studies suggested that omega-6 PUFA is related to chronic inflammatory diseases such as obesity, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and cardiovascular disease.”
Linoleic acid is found in virtually every processed food, including restaurant foods, sauces and salad dressings, so to eliminate it you’ll need to eliminate most processed foods and restaurant foods from your diet — unless you can confirm that the chef only cooks with butter.
However, because animals are fed grains that are high in linoleic acid, it’s also hidden in many ostensibly “healthy” foods like chicken, which makes this a major source as well. Olive oil is another health food that can be a hidden source of linoleic acid, as it’s often cut with cheaper seed oils.
2.Get more sun exposure — You’re probably aware of the many health benefits of optimized vitamin D levels. But an important caveat is that vitamin D should ideally be obtained from healthy sun exposure, not an oral supplement. Not only will adequate sun exposure naturally raise your vitamin D levels to healthy levels, but it will provide a wide variety of other benefits, many of which are only beginning to be understood.
Many people are not aware that only 5% of your body’s melatonin — a potent anticancer agent — is produced in your pineal gland. The other 95% is produced inside your mitochondria — provided you get proper sun exposure. In fact, vitamin D is more than likely a biomarker or surrogate for sun exposure, which is so intricately involved in melatonin production.
During the day, if you get enough sun exposure, near-infrared rays from the sun penetrate deep into your body and activate cytochrome c oxidase, which in turn stimulates the production of melatonin inside your mitochondria. Your mitochondria produce ATP, the energy currency of your body. A byproduct of this ATP production is the creation of reactive oxidative species (ROS), which are responsible for oxidative stress and free radicals.
Excessive amounts of ROS will damage the mitochondria, contributing to suboptimal health, inflammation and chronic health conditions such as diabetes, obesity and thrombosis (blood clots). But melatonin essentially mops up ROS that damage your mitochondria. So by getting plenty of sun exposure during the day, your mitochondria will be bathed in melatonin, thereby reducing oxidative stress.
Getting more sun exposure also goes hand in hand with eliminating seed oils from your diet. The latter will dramatically reduce your risk of sunburn and skin cancer, as susceptibility to UV radiation damage is controlled by the level of PUFAs in your diet, almost like a dial. The PUFAs control how rapidly your skin burns and how rapidly you develop skin cancer.
3.Embrace time restricted eating (TRE)
If you’re still eating three meals a day — morning, noon and night — you’re missing out on one of the most powerful, free health interventions available. TRE involves limiting your eating window to six to eight hours per day instead of the more than 12-hour window most people use.
When you eat throughout the day and never skip a meal your body adapts to burning sugar as its primary fuel, resulting in the downregulation of enzymes that utilize and burn stored fat. As a result, you become progressively more insulin resistant and start gaining weight. When you’re
metabolically unfit, your body primarily relies on glucose, or sugar, as fuel, instead of using fat as a primary fuel.
Even though the fat is there in abundance, your body doesn't have the metabolic capacity to access it. For most people, surplus fuel stored in your body is stored in the form of fat. However, no one has more than about two days’ worth of sugar stored in their tissues. This is why when you first start fasting, and you’re unable to access your fat stores, you’ll quickly exhaust your sugar stores and can experience low blood sugar.
It's not that you don't have the fuel to generate, because your body can make sugar itself, but that process takes a while to ramp up and, as a result, most people get relatively hypoglycemic when they first start using TRE. You may experience dizziness and fatigue as a result, which are signs that you're not metabolically flexible. If you were, your body would have more than enough capacity to produce all the fuel you need to keep your brain happy and healthy.
TRE promotes insulin sensitivity and improves blood sugar management by increasing insulin-mediated glucose uptake rates, which is important for resolving Type 2 diabetes. Another study revealed that eating all meals between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. — instead of between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. — resulted in greater metabolic flexibility, reduced hunger and increased sense of fullness, resulting in weight loss.
Ideally, you’ll want to stop eating for three to five hours before bedtime, then start your eating window in midto late morning after you wake up. Most people reading this can benefit from embracing TRE; however, it isn’t recommended for people who are underweight, expectant or nursing. You also need to use caution if you’re taking certain medications, such as those for blood pressure or blood sugar.
Interestingly, when you're metabolically inflexible and unable to
use fat for fuel, your body generates a molecule called acetyl-CoA when it’s breaking down fats — and that happens to be one of the cofactors for your body making melatonin.
So when you're metabolically inflexible, your body produces far less melatonin in the mitochondria where you need it, because that's where almost all the damage that causes cancer is caused — due to oxidative stress from the process of generating energy within the mitochondria.
4.Exercise often — Exercise is probably the single most important “drug” we know of, and it’s a powerful intervention to prevent Alzheimer’s, among other chronic diseases. One of the most comprehensive studies to date of the molecular changes that occur in your body due to exercise provided an unprecedented glimpse into the details of the body’s physiological response.
It demonstrated that “an orchestrated choreography of biological processes” occur, including those related to:
· Energy metabolism
· Oxidative stress
· Inflammation
· Tissue repair
· Growth factor response
In all, 17,662 molecules were measured, 9,815 of which changed in response to exercise, with some going up and others going down. Certain molecules also spiked immediately after exercise then quickly dropped, while others remained heightened for an hour.
“It was like a symphony,” study author Michael Snyder, Ph.D., professor and chair of genetics at Stanford University, told The New York Times. “First you have the brass section coming in, then the strings, then all the sections joining in.”
Even weekend warriors who pack 150 minutes of exercise into two days
enjoy lower all-cause and cause-specific mortality rates, although I encourage you to make exercise a priority on most days of the week instead. Along with the well-known benefits to your heart, exercise is protective for your brain.
If you know you’re at increased risk of dementia, for instance if a close family member has been diagnosed, it’s even more important to adhere to a regular exercise program. In seniors who are at high risk of dementia, cognitive decline can be reduced with a comprehensive program addressing diet, exercise, brain training, and managing metabolic and vascular risk factors.
Exercise initially stimulates the production of a protein called FNDC5, which in turn triggers the production of BDNF, or brain-derived neurotrophic factor. In your brain, BDNF not only preserves existing brain cells, but also activates brain stem cells to convert into new neurons and effectively makes your brain grow.
Research confirming this includes a study in which seniors aged 60 to 80 who walked 30 to 45 minutes, three days per week, for one year and increased the volume of their hippocampus by 2%. Higher fitness levels were also associated with a larger prefrontal cortex.
5.Protect yourself from EMFs — Electromagnetic fields (EMFs) are the cigarettes of the 21st century — and most people are being exposed 24 hours a day. Most of the radiation emits from cellphones, cell towers, computers, smart meters and Wi-Fi, to name just a few of the culprits. Exposure causes serious mitochondrial dysfunction due to free radical damage. Among the most common consequences of chronic EMF exposure to your brain are:
· Alzheimer's
· Anxiety
· Autism — One of my longtime
mentors, Dr. Dietrich Klinghardt, has linked autism in children to excessive EMF exposure during pregnancy
· Depression
EMFs may also play a role in heart issues and infertility. Research conducted by the National Toxicology Program (NTP) also found “clear evidence” that exposure to cellphone radiation led to heart tumors in the male rates, along with “some evidence” that it caused brain and adrenal gland tumors in the rats.
While it's nearly impossible to avoid EMF exposure completely, there are practical ways to limit it. Given the number of EMFs that bombard you all day long, getting educated about the negative effects of EMFs is imperative to your well-being. Particularly if you are dealing with a serious illness, it is well worth your time to reduce your EMF exposure as much as possible.
One strategy is to connect your desktop computer to the internet via a wired connection and put your desktop — and cellphone — in airplane mode. Also avoid wireless keyboards, trackballs, mice, game systems, printers and house phones. Opt for the wired versions. If you must use Wi-Fi, shut it off when not in use, especially at night when you’re sleeping. Shutting off the electricity to your bedroom at night will also help reduce your exposure.
I encourage you to embrace all of these protective strategies that support optimal health. These are just a start, as there are many others, such as use of a near-infrared sauna, that will also protect your health and lower all-cause mortality.
But remember, you don’t have to implement them all overnight. With each small step you take to reduce a toxic exposure or add a healthprotective element — like more sun exposure — to your day, the better your health will become.
This isn’t just another health fad- this is a powerful treat packed with antioxidants (hello, winter immunity boost), and topped with added goodness for your palate and your body.

A bowl of warmth on an autumn day, serve this as a brunch or dinner side.
1 cup red quinoa, rinsed
1 teaspoon salt
Oil, for sauteing
1 onion, chopped
1 teaspoon brown sugar
3 garlic cloves, chopped
1 5.2 oz bag roasted chestnuts, cut into halves
5-7 baby Bella mushrooms, peeled and cut into chunks
1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce, optional Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste

4. Let saute for an additional 5-8 minutes until fully caramelized.
5. Serve warm in individual bowls over the red quinoa. Garnish with herbs.
Whole grains are a whole-food. Basing a diet on whole-food makes all the difference to weight and wellbeing. Wholefood contains all the natural nutrients of a food and is very digestible. When food is easily digested, it metabolizes into energy instead of sitting around in the system and slowly turning into fat. Choose whole grains such as, whole wheat/ spelt, kasha, quinoa, oats, rice… Skip highly processed starches, such as white flour and white pasta, since it is indigestible. Carbs are not bad for you; only refined carbs are detrimental to health. Even when blood sugar levels are high, but not dangerously high, whole grains are ok to eat. (With a diagnosis of diabetes, unfortunately, carbs need to be severely limited.) Eat whole grains as opposed to refined starches and feel energized, not deprived.
Have a healthy week,

About 5 years ago, my daughter brought home a booklet from school on the topic of lashon hara. Included was a letter from Rebbetzin Kanievsky A”H (R’ Chaim’s Z”L wife) that described the power of learning two halachos of lashon hara every day. She quoted Harav Segal, the Manchester Rosh Yeshiva zt”l, who promised that if a person learned two halachos every day, he would personally act as his defender in Heaven. He wrote, “I have not seen a person who has learned the two halachos from the Sefer Chofetz Chaim, who hasn't been helped with having children, finding a shidduch, recovering from an illness, earning a livelihood, or properly raising children.”
The Rebbetzin wrote how she saw open miracles performed for people who have taken upon themselves to learn two halachos a day. One story she mentioned was about a lady who had a child after 20 years once she started to learn the halachos. In another story the Rebbetzin told a family to learn it and their mother, who had a malignant growth totally recovered! Sometime after reading this letter, I started telling others to do it and people reported back about miracles happening to them. This showed me that it is not just a segula; it is the real thing! A miracle maker!
After hearing about 15 success stories, my wife asked me, “How come it works for everyone and not for us? We have three children in shidduchim for years and nothing has happened with them, despite your learning the two daily halachos.” I told her it was
because she was not learning it as well. I even promised her that if she commits to learning the two halachos every day, and none of our children gets engaged within a year, then I would buy her an expensive piece of jewelry. After about six weeks, our second son got engaged. We were shocked that it worked so quickly! About three weeks later, our oldest son got engaged as well! We were in shock! I realized it was because we were both learning the halachos. People who heard our two sons got engaged within three weeks of each other we're amazed and many more people undertook the learning of two daily halachos. The story is not over. Before the vort of my oldest son, someone in my yeshiva suggested that a brother of his brother-in-law might be a good match for my daughter. We checked it out and they started going out. (At this point my daughter was dating for close to three years). A few weeks later they got engaged! Before our first wedding, we had three children engaged! It was a miracle!
With Siyata D’Shmaya, I have stories of people who didn't have children for six and eight years and stories of people who have recovered from major illnesses. I have a story of a lady who called me up and told me that she and her husband have been doing the learning for 30 years and they have 14 children, all married without problems in shidduchim. Two of their family members had dangerous cases of corona and both totally recovered.
I have over 100 stories of
yeshuos in shidduchim from people of all ages, even one over 50. One a man had his $18,000 of taxes owed knocked off, another person's daughter’s life was saved and someone else was saved from a terrible car accident. Another, of a miraculous birth that shocked even the top heart specialist and a story of a difficult child that made a great turnaround.
R’ Isser Zalman Meltzer wrote that if a person does not learn the laws on a regular basis (even if he had learned it before), he cannot guard himself properly from Lashon Hara.
R' Segal zt”l drew up a calendar of four month cycles, where you can finish the sefer three times a year in about 4 minutes a day. I heard over 190 stories personally, most of them from people who learned the book called “Daily Companion” from Artscroll (blue cover), which has the calendar in it. R’ Segal asked that the calendar should be put in his grave, saying that it is his ticket to Olam Haba. Many people have told me that their lives have changed, and so will yours- especially in the next World. If a husband and wife learn it, they will see countless bracha upon their lives.

AWhat is Yoga? Yoga is a type of exercise in which you move your body into various positions in order to become more fit or flexible, improve your breathing, and relax your mind. The purpose of yoga is to build strength, awareness, and harmony in both the mind and body. Slow movements and deep breathing increases blood flow and warms up muscles, while holding a pose can build strength. Cardio is defined as any type of exercise that gets your heart rate up and keeps it up for a prolonged period of time.
Our bodies are meant to have fat to both protect our organs and use it as fuel to give us energy. It only becomes a problem when we have excessive amounts of it, which can ultimately lead to negative health consequences. To put it simply, in order to lose weight and burn fat, your body needs to be burning through more calories than you’re consuming. Your body’s metabolism can be slowed or boosted depending on the way you eat, sleep and work out. One easy way to boost your body’s metabolism is by exercising regularly and making healthier decisions on a day-to-day basis. This includes drinking more water, getting
enough sleep, and eating meals with higher amounts of protein, vegetables, and healthy fats. In general, ensuring that you’re burning through more calories than you consume is the best way to lose weight and ultimately burn more fat. This happens when you exercise regularly and when your metabolism is boosted. When it comes to figuring out which exercise will be better for you in the end, both yoga and cardio have their strong points.
Let’s compare the cardio and yoga workout: The cardio workout will burn more calories than your yoga workout. However, it’s important to note that if all you do is cardio workouts, you might only lose a few pounds, if anything at all. Sure, you may burn more calories per workout – but when this happens, you’ll naturally want to consume more food, and may have limited willpower to prevent that from occurring. This means you may ultimately gain weight or plateau instead of getting closer to your goals. For burning fat and keeping it off, you don’t want to just focus on the number of calories burned in one workout – you want to focus on how to sustain long term weight loss, and how your workout made you feel. A
lot of this may come down to mindset and overall mindfulness. Yoga is a great way to not only get your workout in, but improve your mindfulness. You will reduce your stress and become more aware of your choices. Yoga can also help you build and tone your muscles. This will help you with fat loss, as muscle tissue burns through calories more efficiently than fat tissue. Overall, yoga will be WAY more effective for weight loss than cardio. If you love doing cardio exercises, combining cardio in conjunction with yoga can be a great way to start moving in the right direction. There have been countless stories of doctors and health enthusiasts that were addicted to cardio workouts. After many years, they attempted to try out yoga and noticed a tremendous increase in stamina and a real reduction in inches. I am a firm believer that if you stress yourself to work out and pant, jump, and overstrain yourself, your body will feel physically stressed. When you feel stressed, your cortisol levels rise and weight loss is not attainable. Aim for a workout that makes you feel amazing and change it up! A blend of cardio and yoga is perfect. Just keep on moving in a way that you feel good about it. Work out smarter, not harder.
QI hear so much about Yoga lately, but is it really effective for weight loss? Or should I stick to my cardio/running routine?

Excerpts of א"טילש ןאמסקאוו םירפא 'ר ג"הרה
at the HISTORIC NEKADESH ASIFAH Wednesday ב"פשתןויסג"כ
After the War, the broken remnants set out to rebuild Klal Yisrael. Not everyone did—some were so traumatized that they never recovered; others, in their great despair, gave up their Yiddishkeit. But our parents built. Nobody knows where they got the strength, but we know what drove them: us. The vision of their future children is what carried them over the most incomprehensible challenges.
In a certain spiritual sense, we have also been through a churban. The carnage is all around us: lost souls, ruined lives, ruined marriages…. Many are lost forever—damaged boys and girls who will carry the scars for many years—although we never give up hope on anyone, chalilah
It is time to rebuild Klal Yisrael. The churban has already happened, we’re sitting on its ashes. But we can rebuild.
And we can start with the young girls here tonight. Young idealistic bnos Yisrael: Your whole life is ahead of you. You can make the decision to build your homes to be pure.
We need to create an army. Although Chazal tell us that it is not the way of a woman to go out to war, nevertheless, when it comes to a milchemes chovah, we are taught that even a bride goes from her chuppah to join the battle. We need an army of Jewish daughters to build their homes with a commitment to only possessing talk‐only phones. And then Klal Yisrael will follow. B’zchus nashim tzidkonyios. You’ll never regret it. You’ll lead a richer life than you can imagine, a life that most people have tragically never experienced.
But if we are to rebuild, we will need all hands on deck—even those who are not yet on the battle front. Everyone wants to be good, and some of us are not there yet, but we all have an obligation to support our troops. I received a letter from a yungerman asking that I speak about the social and familial challenges a family faces when they make the decision to live with minimal technology. Even if you are not yet ready to undertake it yourself, you can at least be on the right side. You can create a new culture where the highest level of respect is accorded to those who are rein, pure. A person who is rein is not a chinyuk, he’s not an extremist—he happens to be living in accordance with basic halacha.
A yungerman tells me that his wife is being moser nefesh not to have a smartphone. All her siblings are applying pressure, and she just can’t face it.
We’re all human beings, and maybe we don’t realize it but we all need to validate ourselves, and we all have heilige neshamos and know deep inside that technology is a direct contradiction to its purity. So, we can feel resentful to one who is being moser nefesh

Chaim G. was a seasoned busi nessman who faithfully submitted his tax information every three months, as the laws in England dic tate. Retailers were tasked with calculating every tax dollar that they had charged their customers, and then submitting the complete sum to the Tax Department. As an upright citizen, Chaim dutifully completed the paperwork and sub mitted it before the deadline. The system flowed smoothly, four times each year, with no indica tion that the process would change.
One summer he received a no tice from the Tax Department in forming him drily that henceforth the taxes “…must be submitted on line…” and proprietors were urged to make all necessary arrange ments before the new regulations went into effect.
Chaim was stumped. He had no online access – not by default but by choice. The new regulation had come out of left field and caught him completely unprepared.
This ehrliche businessman im mediately procured a copy of a lo cal Beis Din ruling which explains the significance of banning inter net usage. He submitted this copy, along with a respectful letter re questing that he be permitted to continue filing taxes by post due to his religious beliefs. He asked that the rabbinical document enclosed should be taken into account be fore a decision would be rendered.
It was a bold move which elicit ed some good-natured ribbing
from his colleagues.
“Come on, Chaim,” they laughed. “What do you think? The tax offi cers are really not interested in your personal opinions regarding the internet! They want the taxes submitted online and they’re not going to change their minds.”
Chaim shrugged. He didn’t pro fess to have an ‘in’ with the Tax De partment, nor could he predict their reaction to his strange re quest. About two weeks elapsed without any further notifications. The popular belief that ‘no news is good news’ didn’t hold water in this case. Time was of the essence.
He contacted the Tax Depart ment and was told, “Yes, sir. We received your written request and it is under review. We submitted the Hebrew text of your rabbinical document to a legal translator and a final decision is pending.”
“They’re taking me seriously,” Chaim marveled. “They didn’t merely shred my letter to bits, as the others predicted.”
When the response finally ar rived, it was as startling as it was concise.
In an official memorandum dat ed July 5th, the HM Revenue & Cus toms Tax Firm replied:
“…I have reviewed your request to continue filing VAT returns on paper, on the grounds that your re ligious beliefs preclude you from filing online…
“I can confirm…you are current ly not required to file VAT returns online and you can continue to file on paper. You will continue to re ceive paper returns.”
The entire country has transi tioned to online filing, but this Yid in London remains an honorable exception.
The Imrei Chaim of Visnitz once told his chasidim by tish that whoever has Yiras Shamayim can come to him for Shrayim. Nobody was confident enough to come up to take Shreiym.
Soon one of the Chasidim went up to the Rebbe to recieve some Shrayim.
The Rebbe asked him “Do you have Yiras Shamayim?”
The man said, “Yes, I live alone. So on Shabbos when I want to read, if the light are closed, I don’t open the light since I have Yiras Shamayim.”
The Imrei Chaim then kissed the man on the hand and gave him Shrayim.

The world's largest blanket didn't even fit into an indoor arena.
A hippo's jaw opens wide enough to fit a sports car inside.
It would take 19 minutes to fall from the North Pole to Earth’s core.
Security staff at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport noticed something unusual in the X-ray of a traveler's bag: a stowaway cat. The Transportation Security Administration said agents monitoring the baggage X-rays at the airport noticed what appeared to be the outline of an animal. The bag was opened by a TSA officer, who was shocked to see a live orange cat inside," TSA spokesperson said.
TSA agents told Delta Airlines about the discovery, and the airline was able to locate the owner of the bag, who was preparing to fly to Orlando, Fla. The bag's owner said the cat belongs to another member of his family.

Everyone has me but no one can lose me. What am I? Where would you take a sick boat? What has a head but no brain?
