On a hot summer day, my sister and I wanted something fun and meaningful to do with our children. We found a private pool available for an hour and a half in the local Jewish magazine and booked it excitedly—it was our first time renting a pool in summer. But when we arrived, we noticed the mechitzas were very low, and the surrounding houses had large windows facing the pool, offering no real privacy. Even if there were window shades, it still wasn’t enough to ensure privacy. Sadly, this is common today in homes bought from nonJews, where pools have low mechitzas and neighbors can look in.
As ehrliche Yiddishe women who protect our tznius, we know it’s not enough to rely on others not looking. Proper, kosher mechitzas are essential, no matter what clothes are worn. Many think tznius clothing is enough, but once wet, it clings to the body, which goes against the purpose of tznius. Both pool owners and renters have their own responsibility to ensure the mechitzas fully enclose the pool so no one can look in. This is also relevant when you’re on vacation, like in Florida, where kosher mechitzas are needed in order to swim properly with tznius.
Though disappointed, we had agmas nefesh and refused to swim there, even after paying for the booking and left.On our way home, near the corner of our house, we approached a busy intersection at the bottom of a hill when suddenly a large truck came speeding toward us from the opposite direction. The truck was dangerously close to hitting our car—just a hair’s breadth away from a serious crash. The truck driver slammed on the brakes, and though our car was hit and damaged, baruch Hashem no one was injured. We pulled into our driveway nearby, and both drivers—heimishe Yidden—came out to inspect the horrendous tragedy !
They looked at each other in silent shock that no one was hurt. But I looked at my family, filled with pride and gratitude, knowing exactly what saved us—the zechus of tznius.Hashem should grant everyone the wisdom to make the right choices in the moment and the strength to face challenges. Most importantly, it’s not that we do the mitzvos in the Torah for Hashem—it’s Hashem, through the Torah, protecting us every step of the way.
We’ve got you covered.

RECAP OF CHAPTER 75: Morah Bilhah is niftar, and the whole Jewish community goes to the levayah, including Irwin, Binyamin’s “guard.” Seeing his chance, Binyamin escapes from the infirmary and runs to call Hanter. He explains to Bentzy that he has gotten into some trouble, so if Bentzy doesn’t hear from him for a whole week, then— And then something happens, cutting the call short.
Theresa was sitting at the piano, playing the overture for Brandenburg Concerto No. 3, when her sister walked in and sidled up behind her.
“You know I can’t stand it when people stand behind me when I
play. And certainly not you—I know how happy you are to point out every time I go even slightly off-key!” Theresa muttered, her eyes fixed on her music notes.
“Stop playing now, please,” Helena said. She had a strange expression on her face.
Theresa could not see her sister’s face, but she heard it in her tone. She raised her hands from the keys and swiveled the round stool to face her sister. “What happened?”
“Something really odd. I wanted to call my friend in Vienna, because I forgot something in her house yesterday. But as soon as I picked up the phone, even before I dialed—I heard voices talking.”
“Maybe Papa is talking on his cordless now. Or Mama.”
“I don’t think so. They’re at the funeral for the Jewish preschool teacher.”
“What, she died?”
“Yes, this morning.”
“But she’s terribly young!”
“What?! Oh, no. Not Naomi. The one who preceded her, the older lady.”
“Oh. And you don’t think that in the middle of her funeral, Papa or Mama can talk on the phone, if they want to?”
Theresa chuckled. “Come on!”
“First of all, it was a man, so it wasn’t Mama. And it wasn’t Papa—listen to what I’m telling you!” Helena’s eyes were smoldering. “I heard the two people who were speaking. They were talking German mixed with Hebrew—I recognize the sounds.”
“And what were they saying?”
“From what I understood from the German, it was, ‘For now, still don’t do anything.’ Doesn’t that sound suspicious to you?”
Theresa’s eyebrows knitted. “It does,” she said slowly. “It sounds like you picked up in the middle of someone’s call, and maybe the lines got crossed. It happens sometimes on phones.”
“We’re in the middle of nowhere here. Where could we pick up a call from? Who would our lines be getting crossed with?” She sat down on the armchair near the piano. “Don’t tell me that it could be a conversation from Jorgan—you know, the village that is the closest to us— because it’s more than eighty kilometers from here! And besides, what about the Hebrew that I heard?”
“Maybe two of our Jews managed to craft a communications device, and they were talking between each other.” Theresa closed the piano cover. “Papa will explode if he hears it. These walkie-talkies can also be used to make contact with someone from the outside!”
“There is no such device that would work at a distance of more than eighty kilometers.”
“And if they manage to connect to an existing frequency?”
“I don’t understand enough about these things,” Helena said. “Actually I don’t understand these things at all.”
“But from what we do understand, it’s clear to me that it would be wise to go to Papa and Mama and tell them everything.”
“Papa’s blood pressure is going to skyrocket, and I have no idea how else he’ll react.”
“Neither do I, and that’s exactly why you should hurry to tell him. Go and get him and Mama from that group of Jews down there.” She stood up and walked over to the window. “Tell them what you heard, and let them decide what to do about it.”
“Do you think they have a way to detect such devices if they are cobbled together by someone—if they decide to search the whole camp for such a thing? We don’t even have enough manpower for that!”
“Well, if Papa brings all the people who are in on the secret here, then there is a group of sorts.”
“Oh, and those sleepy old guys will go from house to house, opening cabinets,” Helena muttered.
“There are a few young ones, too.”

“Them? They’ll advise us to kill everyone and be done with the story. You know how Bernard feels about this.”
“Not everyone is Bernard, don’t forget,” her sister replied. She turned away from the window. “Here are Papa and Mama now, coming back home. The Jews are heading for their cemetery.”
“I’ll talk to them,” Helena said, standing up quickly from her chair. At the door, she stopped. “And I’ll tell you what I’m not going to tell Papa: that one of those voices was a bit familiar, though I cannot remember who it belongs to. I didn’t recognize the second voice at all.”
“Why won’t you tell that to Papa?”
“As long as I can’t remember whose voice it is, I have nothing to tell him. He’ll accuse me of trying to cover up for someone or something, and I am not interested in being the scapegoat, if he doesn’t find a way to discover who the two people were.”
And without another word, she went down to the entry level and into the garden.
standing on the rock and talking. It was hard for him to identify who it was, but it made no difference. As long as they hadn’t started heading for the cemetery, he could still pass the factory and cross the main path toward the residences before the people would get there and meet him.
His heart was still pounding, and his breaths came in short, fast spurts every few seconds. He didn’t know if someone had really come onto the line when he was talking or not. In the middle of the conversation with Bentzy Hanter, he’d suddenly heard strange noises on the phone, and had hastily hung up. He had no idea what the noises were. Maybe they were from the spices factory, but he couldn’t be sure, and he didn’t have time to clarify it.
A strange sound suddenly came onto the line, and he fell silent.
Josef and Katarina were just walking through the gate that separated the camp from the manor house, and Josef raised an eyebrow when he saw his daughter.
“You look worried,” he said solicitously. “Did something happen?”
Binyamin stopped behind a narrow space between two trees, breathing heavily. He scanned the area below, focusing on the faraway shul. Someone was still
Was it possible that one of the Wangels had wanted to suddenly use the phone? He’d never called Bentzy in the middle of the day before, but this time, it was for a very short and very urgent conversation. That was aside for the fact that he had assumed—with near certainty—that the Wangels were attending Morah Bilhah’s levayah, as part of their relationship with the residents of the camp.
He would go back to the clinic now, with the hope that Irwin hadn’t preceded him. And if he would be waiting there for him—certainly irate—he would have to understand that Binyamin simply could not miss his preschool teacher’s funeral. What about the fact that they hadn’t seen him in the crowd? Well, obviously, he’d been warned not to talk to anyone, so he had

stood at a distance. Binyamin crossed the path and continued to the no-man’s land behind the residential huts. He hugged the walls of the houses, dashing from one to the other, until he got to the clinic, and then he walked between the pine trees that shaded the left side of the building. He was just at the door now.
Irwin was there already, standing with fire in his eyes, his muscular arm resting on the doorpost. “Where were you?!” He grabbed Binyamin’s shoulder none too gently.
“Only others are allowed to go to the teacher’s levayah?” Binyamin muttered, careful about how he worded it. “No one forbade me from going. But you can relax—I didn’t speak to anyone there, and I didn’t even get close to anyone.”
“Where were you?!” the man growled again.
“I told you.”
“He went out to the levayah,” the doctor, just walking in, interjected. Babbe was right beside her.
“You went to the levayah, Binyamin?” Sarah Liba’s eyes flashed with irritation. “Even though you’ve been instructed to be on absolute bed-rest? That wasn’t right of you! Now go straight to bed!”
Irwin’s hand lifted from Binyamin’s shoulder, and the youth felt the eyes boring into him as he walked into the long room.
Babbe followed him. “You shouldn’t have exerted yourself that way!” she said angrily— genuinely so—and Binyamin didn’t know to what extent she believed that he was in such a weak state that he needed full time rest, or if she was afraid of Sherer’s reaction.
“I’ll be fine, Babbe, b’ezras Hashem,” he said, climbing into
bed, with his clothes on. “And… don’t worry.”
“But I am worried!” she answered. Then she added in a lower tone, “First of all, it’s so everyone here will calm down. And daven that Leo Sherer will be less suspicious than me.”
Binyamin glanced behind him. Irwin had left the clinic. Had he gone to summon Leo?
Babbe turned to the desk at the front of the room and exchanged a few brief words with the doctor and one of the workers. Then she left the room.
“Where did my grandmother go?”
Binyamin asked the doctor, who was approaching the bed with the same green pill that Babbe had given him yesterday.
“She also works in the small kitchen, if you recall.” The doctor put the pill on the small tray. “Swallow this.” She walked off, and Binyamin picked up the pill, wondering if he should swallow it. Maybe it would be wise for him to be asleep when Leo came. But it wouldn’t be such a deep sleep, and if they would try to wake him, they would succeed. He would just be less alert. That was dangerous.
Without another thought, he slipped the pill into his pillowcase and arranged it under his head. He hadn’t even managed to close his eyes when Leo Sherer strode into the room, followed by Irwin. They both made a beeline for his bed.
“You are coming with me right now,” Leo said, without any preamble. “Outside. And you will show me exactly where you were standing. I don’t believe—” He stopped midsentence as his daughter suddenly burst into the room.
“Papa!” she said in a panicked tone. “Wangel is looking all over for you! He said that it’s urgent, and you should come to the manor house right away!”

COOKIE RECIPE:
2 sticks margarine
1 ½ cups sugar
1 tbs vanilla sugar
2 eggs
3 ½ cups good quality flour
¾ tsp baking powder
½ tsp salt
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
Cream marg, sugar and vanilla sugar on high speed. Add eggs. Reduce speed. Add baking powder, salt and slowly add the flour.
Roll out dough and use cookie cutters to create your shapes.
Bake for 9-11 minutes.
Cookies should be a light yellow color, not brown.
SUPPLIES NEEDED
• White flood icing.
• White outline icing
• Gold or Silver Edible glitter (optional)
1. Rings come in assortment of sizes, from mini to jumbo. You can decorate an assortment of sizes! Pic 1
2. Start by piping an outline of a circle around the outer edge with outline icing. Pic 2
3. Outline the diamond, hexagon shape. Pic 3
ROYAL ICING RECIPE:
3 egg whites
1 lb confection sugar
Few drops of water
Beat egg whites with electric beaters until stiff. Reduce Speed. Slowly add confection sugar while mixing on low speed. Add a few drops of water. Combine.
You now have icing which is a thick consistency. This is good for outlining, writing, or adding any details on top of your cookie. For the cookie backgrounds or areas that need to be smooth, you need flood consistency. You do this by adding a few drops of water until you reach a smooth consistency.
Divide icing into separate bowls and add food coloring or gel as needed.
You are now ready to fill piping bags!
4. Outline another inner circle, inside the ring, not too far from the first circle. Pic 4
5. Leave to dry for 10 mins. Pic 5
6. Flood the circle and hexagon with white flood icing. Pic 6
7. Leave to dry for a minimum of an hour. If using glitter you can add whilst still wet. Pic 7
8. Option 1: Pipe a line across the hexagon, whilst still wet. Pic 8
9. Option 2: Pipe zig zags on top and bottom half of the diamond. You can add some more glitter. Pic 9
10. Leave to dry, and enjoy!

QI am packing my son for camp and I know that he loves the Kosher Tradition Noodle Soups. Are they really unhealthy? Should I feel bad about sending a case of them to camp with him? I am curious to hear your take on them. Thank you!
AAs a parent packing your son for camp, you’re likely trying to strike the perfect balance between convenience, comfort, and nutrition. So, when your child begs you to send a case of Kosher Tradition Noodle Soups it’s only natural to wonder: Are these really so unhealthy? Should I feel bad about sending them?
What’s Actually in a Kosher Tradition Noodle Soup?
These instant soups are popular for a reason. They’re warm, salty, filling, and super convenient—just add hot water and go. But nutritionally, they’re not winning any awards. Here’s what you’ll typically find in a single serving:
• Calories: Around 250–300
• Sodium: Often over 1,000 mg (almost half the daily recommended limit)
• Protein: About 6–8 grams
• Fat: 10–14 grams (including some saturated fat)
• Carbs: 30–40 grams
• Vegetables or fiber: Minimal
• Additives and preservatives: Present, like in most shelf-stable convenience foods
So yes, they’re processed, high in sodium, and not particularly nutrient-dense. But they’re also not poison. They won’t single handedly ruin your child’s health, especially in moderation.
Camp isn’t the time most kids suddenly start eating kale and grilled salmon. It’s a busy, exciting, snack-heavy environment where kids
are often hungrier than usual and eating on the go. Instant soups offer:
• Comfort: They feel like home in a cup
• Warmth: On chilly nights or rainy days, they’re a cozy go-to
• Familiarity: Camp food can be hit or miss. Sometimes your child just wants something he knows and loves
• Independence: Kids like being able to "make their own food" with just hot water
Sending a few is a way to give your child a touch of familiarity in an otherwise very new environment.
The key is not to send them as the only food source. If your child is eating relatively balanced meals throughout the day and enjoying plenty of camp activity, a cup of instant noodles a few times a week is perfectly reasonable. It’s okay to let some food choices be about comfort and enjoyment, not just nutrition.
If you want to level it up just a bit without taking away the noodles completely:
1. Send lower-sodium options (some brands or flavors may have a “lite” version)
2. Include single-serve packs of shelf-stable protein, like tuna to balance out the meal
3. Send a case of water or electrolyte drinks to help counteract the salt load
4. Encourage him to add veggies from the meal with the soup—if your child is open to that!

Rashi began writing commentary on the Torah when he was young, but he kept it private. After some time, he set out on a journey to find out if his commentary was useful. He was already a well-known sage, but he chose to go incognito. Upon arriving in different Jewish communities, he observed what people were studying and struggling to understand. When no one was around, he would slip papers with his Pirush into the Sefer of the person learning. People’s responses were enthusiastic, prompting him to continue writing his Pirushim. Eventually, someone caught him secretly planting one of his papers in a Sefer, and the word got out that the author of these mysterious slips was none other than Rashi.

R’ Yitzchak, Rashi’s father, was very poor. One day, to his fortune, he found a precious stone, which he tried to sell. The only one willing to pay its worth was the bishop. When R’ Yitzchak heard that the stone was intended for his Tzeilem, he refused to sell it. Knowing that the stone would likely be taken from him by force, he threw it into the sea. A Heavenly Voice proclaimed, “Because of your sacrifice, you will be blessed with a son who will outshine the most precious stones and the light of his Torah will shine forever.” This is indeed what happened. Rashi was born and grew up to write a commentary on the Tanach and the Talmud that would be studied for generations.
Rashi, short for Rabbi Shlomo Yitzchaki, was born in Troyes, France. He studied in Yeshivas in Germany but ultimately returned to his hometown, where he was elected to be the Rav. He declined receiving wages for his position and made a living instead from selling wine. He had only daughters, who are thought to have been learned. His sons-in-law and grandsons, including Rabbeinu Tam and Rashbam, were well-known Torah scholars.
Rashi had no personal agenda. He was focused only on making sure that people of all levels could understand the Torah more clearly. Similarly, if we know a lot, we can concentrate on helping others around us understand more, without boasting about what we know.
What is a Torah topic you know a lot about? How can you help a sibling or classmate understand one of the concepts more clearly?
In a big bowl, mix the eggs, oil, sugar, lemon juice, and vanilla. (Don’t forget to check the eggs for blood spots before using!)
Take a piece of parchment paper, and start building the grape as shown. Use little pieces of dough to build the grape cookie on top.
6 3 8 2 5 7 4 1
Slowly mix in the baking powder and flour. Add the flour half a cup at a time— you might not need it all.
Put your cookies on a baking sheet and bake at 350°F for 13 minutes. Let them cool.
Put a tiny drop of water in each dent of the palette, then place a colorful Skittle in each one.
-2 Eggs -¼ Cup Oil
-½ Cup Sugar
-1 Tbsp Lemon Juice
-½ Tsp Vanilla
-2 ¼ / 2 ½ Cup Flour
Roll out the dough until it’s about half an inch thick. Use a round cookie cutter to cut out a circle. On one side, press a small dent and poke a hole at the top. Then make five tiny round dents for the paint spots.
Roll out some fondant super thin (like a pancake). Use the same circle cutter to cut out fondant for the palette. Stick the fondant onto the cookie with a few drops of honey and smooth it out.
Dip the paintbrush in water, rub it on a Skittle to make "paint," and color in the grape cookie. Now you have a beautiful and delicious masterpiece!
