THE OUTSIDE BUBBLE

Eitan Baron knocks at Mr. Perl’s door, and Martin pretends he is Perl’s secretary. He tells Eitan to have his yeshivah’s administrator call him directly about a donation.

Martin begins emailing Dan and his friends, under the name “Shadow,” urging them to be careful when they sabotage the Arabs, and not harm any innocent people. Dan and his friends are furious at Martin. Yaron Kornblit of the GSS, and his assistant Gil, are shocked at the change in Martin.

CHAPTER THIRTY FOUR

Would they not let him finish this book?! First the knocking and ringing at the door, now the phone... Martin set aside The Revelation with a sigh and picked up his phone. “Yes?”

“Hello, this is Yeruchem Goldberg, from the Kletzkin Yeshivah in Netivot. My talmid dropped by this week, and you gave him this number for me to call?”

“Oh, that’s right,” Martin said slowly. “Mr. Perl hasn’t been feeling so well lately, and I’m handling his affairs. How can I help you?”

“He hired a secretary?”

“Yes.” Martin kept it terse. “Nice. It’s really about time. It sometimes seemed to me like it was all too much for him… Anyway, do you know about the connection that our yeshivah has with his organization?”

Martin sufficed with a slight murmur, which could be interpreted as the caller wished.

“A long-time talmid of ours was married to Mr. Perl’s niece. After he passed away, Mr. Perl began to contribute to the yeshivah in his memory. He does it regularly now, every year.”

“You don’t need to tell me the whole story,” Martin said drily. “Just tell me how much he usually gives you.”

“Between twenty and forty thousand.”

thousand?! He had no idea how much Perl had in his account, certainly not after he’d paid for the chicken and the clothing and all that. “I don’t know…” he replied. “The organization is struggling right now. He won’t be able to give you such an amount.”

“Oh,” Goldberg said, clearly disappointed. “Is there any amount that is possible? Even ten thousand shekel would help us plug up some big holes.”

Ten thousand shekel! This guy was going too far. And what was this yeshivah, anyway?

“I need to look into it,” he said politely. “Right now, I really don’t think that it will be possible.”

“When will it be possible to speak with Mr. Perl himself?”

“Not in the next two weeks.” It was one thing to give to poor children who reminded him of himself. It was one thing to give to disadvantaged families, so that their kids wouldn’t fall into crime and street gangs. But this yeshivah?

Well, when—if—Mr. Perl came back, he’d give to these people himself—if he so chose.

“Supporting Torah is a major zechus,” the caller said, as if reading his mind. “And Mr. Perl knows that. He always gave us very generously, and accumulated tremendous zechusim for himself like that. You can’t imagine how valuable such zechusim are.”

“He always gave to you?”

“Yes. Can you try to communicate with him? To try to remind him about our yeshivah…”

“Okay, I’ll try talking to him about it, and he’ll probably give you something. Not twenty, but maybe ten.”

“Thank you, thanks so much. Should I call you back to hear the answer?”

Martin looked at the phone. “I’ll call you after I speak to him.”

He hung up and went downstairs to the kitchen. What was this? An envelope on the floor, under the door. It was open, and there were two papers inside. One paper looked official and important. The second was torn out of a notebook of some type, and there was a message written on it. The handwriting wasn’t so clear. As it was, he still struggled with Hebrew writing, and this was even worse. Who was the writer? Could he figure it out? He glanced at the signature on the bottom. Hinda.

Oh, no. She had come back? But he didn’t see anyone through the window, and the irritating knocking, which he had tried to ignore as he’d read the last four

pages of the book, had fallen silent.

“Ima…” Mali said, and then fell silent. She had no idea how to continue. They were standing at the gate, facing the street, and it looked like her mother was focused only on her inner voices, which her daughter had no part in. “Ima, maybe you should come up to my room in the dorm. It’s nearby. You’ll have something hot to drink, and we can talk.”

Hinda raised her eyes to her daughter, who was a head taller than her. “No, Mali,” she said quietly. “I want to stay here. But thanks,” she added.

Had she been asked a few months ago if she wanted to speak to Mali, she would have accepted happily. Recently, without her even noticing how it was happening, their short conversations had become a normal part of her week—but she’d never dreamed of receiving an invitation from Mali to have a real talk. And now, when it came, she just couldn’t take her up on it.

Because of Michoel.

“But why stay here?” Mali persisted, confused. Her mother had left Michoel’s house without speaking, and then she’d just stopped here, on the sidewalk nearby, as if she couldn’t bring herself to leave his street.

“You’re right.” Hinda’s voice was strangely steely. “There’s actually no reason for me to stay here. Maybe what I need to do is contact the police.”

“The police?” Mali raised an eyebrow.

“There’s something strange about what is going on.”

“But Ima, if he really suspects that…that you took money from the organization or something, then that’s why he’s not opening the door. Or answering the phone for you. Is…is that so strange?”

“This strange disconnect began even before these accusations, Mali.” Hinda’s voice was a bit calmer, as if the logical analysis of the situation had done her good. “He didn’t answer my calls. But the strange thing is that at one point, I did get a message from him that made sense, and had no accusations or complaints or anything else. I don’t know what to tell you.”

“Maybe before you call the police, we should stay here a bit.”

“Here?” Hinda was puzzled. “Yes, here,” Mali repeated. “Behind his gate. Let’s watch the house a bit. Maybe you’ll catch him leaving from there—like to shul or something.”

“But what if he’s not home now?” “Maybe we’ll see him coming back. But…” She glanced toward the gate. “The air conditioners on the second floor are on, Ima.”

Hinda mulled this over. “You know what? Let’s give your idea a chance. This bench is pretty much out of sight, and we can see his gate from it. Should we sit here?”

“I think it’s worth a try.”

“You can get back to whatever it is that you’d be doing now, if you want,” her mother offered, as she put her large bag down on the bench. “It’s a great idea, and I’m going to do it, but that doesn’t

mean you have to stay with me.”

“I know I don’t have to, but…” Mali blushed. “It’s fine. I’m happy to stay with you.”

She couldn’t believe it herself, but it was true. She, Mali, really was happy to sit next to her mother, even with her big bag. She wasn’t afraid that her mother might suddenly stick her hand out to passersby and ask for money for Ohr Naftali and Leah.

Not that Ima had ever done that, but it had happened, a few times, that Michoel had called and said that he was urgently short of a thousand or two thousand shekels for one of his families, and Ima had gotten up and gone to certain stores and asked the salespeople and customers for donations for the organization. They weren’t strangers; most of them knew Ima, and perhaps also admired her.

Mali had never been with Ima at those times. But later, she would get regards from friends who had met Ima then, and she couldn’t stand it. Just like she couldn’t stand the regards she’d get from Ima’s monthly visits to people’s homes. She was always afraid that her friends thought that every new thing she ever bought was purchased with the tzedakah money that Ima collected.

Once, when she was in seventh grade, her teacher had told them about the wife of the Vilna Gaon, and that in the merit of her efforts to collect tzedakah, she was zocheh to a special reward. Mali’s classmates had turned to look at her, and someone had said, “Morah, Mali’s mother is also a gabba’is tzedakah.” Then, Mali

had felt a frisson of pride in her mother. But it had quickly faded out. The Vilna Gaon’s wife did not collect for her own home, right? And no one suspected that she did. But Ima… Mali herself never knew, to this day, whether or not the money, or at least part of it, went to them. The nice girls had called her mother a “gabba’is tzedakah,” while the less kindly ones would say that her mother “collected money from people’s houses.” She’d even heard one or two girls mutter something about her mother being “a beggar.”

And that was all before everything they said about Yosef.

“Ima,” Mali said suddenly, lowering her eyes to the bag that she so disliked. “Ima, I wanted to ask you if…”

Hinda looked at her from over her still-closed sefer Tehillim. “Yes, Mali?”

“You…” She swallowed. “Do you want something to eat?”

Hinda smiled. “Thanks, but not here.”

Mali nodded, and Hinda glanced again at the gate to Michoel’s yard. Then she opened the Tehillim on her lap and began to whisper Perek Chaf-Zayin, which was where her bookmark was placed. Mali sat and waited for her to finish.

“Ima,” she began again, when Hinda finished.

“Yes, Mali?”

“The…the money that you collected over the years… Was it… sometimes also for us?”

“No, Mali.” Hinda looked for a moment at Michoel’s gate again,

and then turned to face her daughter. “I never collected for us. There were two times, at the beginning, when finances were a bit hard. Then I borrowed money from the organization, with Michoel’s permission. As soon as I could, though, I repaid it all.”

“From what?” Mali’s eyes were restless.

“I started working.”

“Doing what?”

Hinda smiled. “Mali, you don’t know what I do for a living?” she asked softly.

“Interior design.”

“Right. And baruch Hashem, it’s pretty lucrative work.”

“But how busy were you with it?” Although her words held a slightly accusatory tone, there was also an undertone of pleading, and that was all Hinda heard.

“Enough to make a living.” She looked into her daughter’s eyes, but Mali wouldn’t meet her gaze. “Everything is alright, Mali.”

Mali looked at the furry keychain that hung on her small handbag, and wanted to burst out crying. She didn’t know why. But at that moment, Hinda stood up. “Someone just went into Michoel’s yard. Let’s see what’s going on there, and if the door opens.”

Mali sat up and dropped her keychain—and her tears. She had better vision than her mother, and when she peered through the trees that made up the fence, she reported that the man who had entered the yard was wearing a gray shirt, had wild hair, and looked like he could be homeless.

“He’s getting near the steps… Hey!” She squinted suddenly. “The envelope isn’t under the door! He took it!”

“Who, the guy that just went in?” Hinda asked.

“No, he’s just getting close to the steps now. Michoel, apparently.”

“Michoel took the envelope?”

“Well, it’s not there, where you left it.” Mali turned her head.

“So he’s at home.” Hinda slung her bag over her shoulder. “What do you say, Mali? Should we go back and knock again?”

“Maybe we’ll wait to see if he opens the door for this man,” her daughter suggested. “If you get there before he answers the door for him, he may not open it at all.”

“True,” Hinda said. Just then her phone started to ring. “Hi, Dov,” she said quietly into it, her voice trembling slightly with tension. “How are you?”

“Baruch Hashem. How are things in Yerushalayim? How are you doing?”

“Conducting surveillance,” she answered with a chuckle.

“Did he open the door for you?” His voice dropped, perhaps due to the heavy weight his words carried.

“No.”

“Even though you weren’t with me?”

It took Hinda a moment to catch on. “What do you mean, Dov?” she protested. “I told you that it has nothing to do with you. You saw how angry he was at me, and he didn’t even mention you at all!”

“So what’s happening now?” There was something weighing on his voice, making it sound heavy, and she wondered what it was.

“Someone just walked into his yard. We’re waiting to see if he’ll open the door for him.”

“He’s not opening the door,” Mali reported from her position.

Hinda repeated the report to her husband.

“How long are you going to wait there?”

“I don’t know if there’s anything for me to wait for… Anyway, tell me, what’s doing at home?”

“Baruch Hashem, everything’s fine. Nothing new…” He hesitated a moment before continuing. “Hinda, do you think you’d be up to welcoming another guest, after the wonderful treatment you gave to Penina?”

“Guest?”

“Yes. Simi,” he answered, with the passion of a father. “See, it’s very full at the mother-baby home

where she went, and they’re not managing. They keep calling her to the nursery, because her baby is a real screamer, and she’s really not getting any rest.” He fell silent. The heaviness in his voice didn’t allow him to ask what he so wanted to ask.

“I once promised you, Dov,” she said softly, moving away from the fence, from Mali, from Michoel, if he was there, “that our home will always be open to all of your girls. Remember?”

“Even for Simi?”

So he did realize that there were differences between his daughters.

“For Simi, and for any of the other ones,” she said. She didn’t ask how she was supposed to help take care of a screaming baby when she had two jobs that she’d promised to finish by the end of the week. Simi would come, and she’d be warmly welcomed, and if she’d choose to be distant, as usual—well, that would be her choice. But she’d still be respected and treated warmly.

Just like Mali would be warmly and respectfully welcomed if she’d decide suddenly to come home for Shabbos.

ICE STORMS

Recap: The police finish the forensic inspection of the Grossman premises. The policemen and security agency director, Mr. Brim, get ready to leave. Avrumi is afraid for the Grossmans’ safety, but Mr. Brim promises him beefed up protection. Over breakfast, Mrs. Grossman, now back to herself, snaps at Esther Mindy’s choices again.

Raizy tells her husband how hearing her mother sound so weak made her realize that her mother was just a person, without any real power to hurt her with her words.

Mindy and Shaindy, two Grossman cousins, discuss the break-in. They decide that Mrs. Grossman is surely mortified that her name is being bandied about in connection to a break-in.

Chapter 32

“Did you see the news this morning?”

“I sure did, Tim. Think there’s any reason for us to go to work today?”

Tim sighed as he kept one hand on the steering wheel. “Look, Ryan, knowing the good doctor, I think we better show up. He’s going to find his way out, don’t you think? I’m actually in my car already, heading to the Labs.”

“You might just be overly optimistic, Tim. Maybe you can’t face it, but we’re going to be out of our jobs soon. There’s no way Dr. Bloom can get over this.”

“He’s gotten past a lot of other stuff.” Ryan groaned. “This is not like all the other stuff, Tim! This is his primary investor, number-one

funder, pulling out on him and asking for his entire investment back. Unless Dr. Bloom turns into a miracle-worker, it’s time for us to update our resumes.”

Tim was quiet for a moment. “What?” Ryan asked impatiently. “You said you saw the news, just like me. Don’t you agree?”

“Maybe I just think that Dr. Bloom is, in fact, a miracle worker.” Tim said slowly as his car sped up. This time, Ryan snorted. “Leave your head in the sand, then. I’m not showing my face at the Labs today.”

Tim didn’t answer, and Ryan cut the connection.

When Tim got to work a few minutes later, he found that Ryan wasn’t the only one of his coworkers hunkering down at home to wait and see which way the winds would

blow. Less than half of ProMedical’s lab employees and medical technicians had shown up.

Dr. Bloom, always the first one in his office, was standing in the waiting room trying to comfort a distraught patient.

“Don’t worry, Corrie,” he said gently. “The technician is a little late, so your test might have to be pushed off, but making sure you’re doing amazing is number one!”

Corrie visibly relaxed at his reassurance. “Thanks, doc. Justwhen I saw the news this morning, I got so scared. Thought this was the end of it all, you know?”

“You don’t worry,” Dr. Bloom said. “News or no news, we’re going to make sure all our patients are taken care of."

Corrie nodded.

"I’ll have my secretary call you as soon as we’re ready to do your testing,” Dr. Bloom said. “Okay?”

“Okay, doc. Thanks again.”

Tim, standing inconspicuously at the staff entrance to the waiting room, exhaled loudly for the first time. Dr. Bloom turned.

“Oh! Tim! Good to see you here! Have you gotten started on preparing the latest results?”

“Um, not yet.” Tim admitted. “I wanted to talk to you first.”

Dr. Bloom faced Tim fully. “Tim,” he said, “one thing I can tell you: I am never going to give in to these guys who want to take me down. They know I’m onto something huge, but so do I. By hook or by crook, I am going to make this work. So, you go work on those results, I’ll take care of the rest. And don’t worry, I’ll be calling the rest of the team in as well.”

Tim nodded, and disappeared down the hall.

In the quiet he left behind, Dr. Bloom tried to steady his breathing. He would have to go call every lab technician and employee to assure them that ProMedical was still alive and well. True, the Grossman funding was gone and if he didn’t find a different backer, he would have to declare bankruptcy. But until the actual bitter end was apparent, he intended to keep on fighting.

Dr. Bloom headed to his office, where he began making calls to each employee individually, reassuring, persuading, and cajoling. “Listen, you can believe all the fake news you want. You can believe that somehow, patients are getting mistreated here even though you’ve seen with your own eyes it isn’t true,” he told one suspicious nurse, “but you know, it’s a pity for you to leave before you find a different job.

In the meanwhile, why don’t you come in, and when you’ve found another position, you can resign?”

The nurse agreed. As did most of his other staff. They had to have been pretty confident in Dr. Bloom to have kept working for him despite the smear campaign. But this latest blow had made them unsure of their paychecks. With Dr. Bloom’s assurance, they all agreed to come back to work.

But it wasn’t with the same patriotic fervor as before. Dr. Bloom knew he had to find a solution, and fast. He couldn’t ask his employees to work for free.

Where in the world would he get the kind of financial bailout he needed now?

“Thank you for taking the time to come down today, Mr. Grossman,” Lieutenant Andrews said courteously as Mr. Grossman settled in the seat facing him.

“I want you to catch that criminal,” Mr. Grossman said. “Put him behind bars.”

“That’s what we’re here to do. We want to catch the guy who did this as much you do, Mr. Grossman.”

“Good. So, fire away! What do you want to know about this whole story?”

“Why don’t you start telling me how you got started with ProMedical Labs and I’ll ask you questions as you go along.”

“Okay.” Mr. Grossman put his shoulders back as he thought.

“I first heard about ProMedical from a pitch deck that they sent my company. We were pretty impressed with his company, and when he asked me to come to a call where he would present the offer to a couple of investors, I agreed.”

“Do you know who the other investors were?”

“No. Actually, I would usually expect an individual call. I’m not sure why I agreed to a joint conference with other investors.”

The officer nodded. “Was it a closed meeting?”

“Yes. I’m assuming Dr. Bloom would be able to give you the names of the other investors.”

“Got it, go on.”

“So after Dr. Bloom’s presentation, my team did the rest of the research and decided that it would make a solid investment. We transferred the first infusion of capital as a lump sum payment that Dr. Bloom used to begin his clinical trial stage.”

“When did the threats start? How long after this?”

“The threats to me didn’t start right away, actually,” Mr. Grossman clarified. “First, there was a smear campaign with libelous articles and videos put out all over against Dr. Bloom. My team was horrified, because this would mean that nobody would trust Dr. Bloom’s treatment, even if it passed the trials successfully.”

Lieutenant Andrews nodded. He too, had seen the negative coverage Dr. Bloom had received, though he hadn’t thought of it as a smear campaign at the time.

“Honestly, my employees all thought that we should drop the investment right then and there. But I refused.”

“Why?”

Mr. Grossman didn’t reply right away. “Because this investment was pretty personal for me,” he said at long last. He tried not to sound choked up as he continued, “I had a very close friend who died young from this disease. He suffered terribly for the three years before he died, going through treatment that turned him into a shadow. It was so hard to watch it. When I heard what Dr. Bloom’s treatment was

all about, I had to help him. And I wasn’t going to stop just because the companies who made money off people like my friend didn’t like it.”

Lieutenant Andrews nodded as Mr. Grossman finished his impassioned speech. “I hear that,” he said. “What made you so sure, though, that it was a smear campaign coming from biased parties and not an actual expose?”

“Believe me, if there was anything to expose, my team would have found out about it when they did research,” Mr. Grossman responded. “My employees are very thorough. Also, before we invested, I got a warning that there were powerful companies who didn’t want to see Dr. Bloom succeed. So I knew what I was getting into.”

“And you went ahead with it.”

“Of course. Like I said, there was a personal side to this investment. That’s why, when I heard about the negative publicity campaign, I went ahead and gave Dr. Bloom another infusion of cash-this time specifically to boost his reputation. And he used it admirably and convincingly.”

Lieutenant Andrews nodded. Yes, the positive coverage had been just as strong if not stronger than the negative portrayals in the media. It helped that Dr. Bloom had had so many fans before.

“Dr. Bloom has a lot of friends,” Mr. Grossman echoed Lieutenant Andrews’ thoughts, “so it was easy for him to defend himself. That’s when they turned their attention to me.”

Mr. Grossman described to the lieutenant how the first threat had been delivered-outside the restaurant where his son’s sheva brachos had taken place.

“But I didn’t even blink from that threat. So they moved on to threatening my employees.”

“They never actually threatened your family?”

“Nope,” Mr. Grossman said. “That’s why the protection I arranged for wasn’t as strong as it should have been.”

He’d already made his displeasure known to Mr. Brim, the security agency’s director.

“So when the attack came, you were conveniently out of the country.”

Mr. Grossman’s facial muscles twitched. “Yes.”

He hesitated. “Apparently due to a scam. Probably arranged by the same people.”

“We’ll get our cyber crime specialists to take a look,” Lieutenant Andrews said. “They may be helpful in tracking down the emails you received in relation to the scam.”

Mr. Grossman made a dismissive motion. “I doubt that’s going to work. They already tried tracking the threatening emails my staff received and they didn’t turn up anything.”

Lieutenant Andrews didn’t respond to that comment.

“Tell me all the details of the investment scam,” he said instead. Mr. Grossman did, responding to all of the police officer’s questions as best as he could.

“Okay,” the lieutenant said when he was done. “I think we’ve got your part of the story clear. Is your wife here with you?”

“Yes,” Mr. Grossman replied. Mrs. Grossman was sitting in the waiting room together with Avrumi, waiting to be summoned in.

“Hello, Mrs. Grossman,” the lieutenant said. “I hope you’re feeling okay.”

“I’m perfectly fine,” Mrs. Grossman said, her tone even. Her iron façade had been put firmly back into place. “That’s good,” the lieutenant said. “Now, you already told us your story the night of the break-in. I’m just going to ask you a couple of questions for clarity’s sake.”

Mrs. Grossman nodded.

“You described hearing someone enter your house, which caused you to black out. Did you hear anything else that the intruder may have done?”

“I think I might have heard him climbing the steps,” Mrs. Grossman said, her expression slightly strained despite herself.

The police officer nodded. “Were you able to hear if the person was a heavy person? Were the steps loud?”

Mrs. Grossman thought. “I think that they were very loud,” she said. “I was on the third floor. The entrance he came in from is on the first floor. I could only hear them if they were loud.”

“Got it.”

Lieutenant Andrews looked at the two of them.

“Now, I have some news to share,” he said. “The injured security agent regained full consciousness in the middle of the night.”

“What!” Mr. Grossman exclaimed. “So why aren’t you questioning him?!”

“Of course, we’ve questioned him thoroughly,” the lieutenant said. “Here’s what we’ve got.”

There’s hardly a spice that can rival the wonderful taste and the heady scent that cinnamon yields. Since cinnamon and winter are synonymous, these make the perfect after dinner treat or even a Friday night dessert.

GITTY NEUMAN

DOUGH:

1 Tablespoon dry yeast

¼ cup sugar

1 cup warm water

3 ½ cups flour

¼ cup oil

1 egg

½ teaspoon salt

COATING:

½ cup dark brown sugar

½ cup sugar

1 ½ Tablespoons cinnamon

1 Tablespoon vanilla sugar

Oil, for coating

DIRECTIONS:

1. In a large mixing bowl combine yeast, sugar and warm water and proof for 5 minutes.

2. Add remaining ingredients and mix until a smooth dough forms. The dough should not be sticky. If necessary add a bit of flour.

3. Drizzle some oil over the dough and turn to coat. Cover and set aside to rise for 1 hour.

4. While the dough rises, prepare 2 shallow bowls for the coating. Fill the first bowl with oil. Combine sugars and cinnamon in the 2nd bowl.

5. Grease a 10x16 pan and set aside.

6. After rising, divide dough in 2 parts. Cut each part into 16 evenly sized pieces. Roll each piece of dough into a 3” log.

7. Dip each log into oil and then coat liberally with the cinnamon sugar mixture.

8. Line up logs in the prepared pan (in 3 rows, approx. 10 buns per row). The logs should be close together and the pan should be almost full.

9. Let logs rise in the pan for an additional half hour.

10. Preheat oven to 325°.

11. Drizzle ½ Tablespoon of water in each corner of the pan and cover with foil.

12. Bake for ½ hour. Uncover and bake for an additional 15 minutes.

Note: The dough can be made either by hand or in a mixer.

Tip: These make a great dessert. Serve with ice cream, a drizzle of caramel syrup and pecans.

(raw) pecans DIRECTIONS:

1. Preheat oven to 375°.

2. In a small bowl combine brown sugar and cinnamon. 3. Slice a small piece off the top of each apple (just enough to give you a flat surface). 4. Run apples briefly under cold water. Roll the apples in the cinnamon and sugar mixture to coat.

5. Place apples in an 8x8 square pan.

6. Prepare the filling: Combine all ingredients except the caramel chips and pecans and mix well until crumbly. Stir in chips and pecans.

7. Stuff the cores of the apples with the filling, pressing down to pack it firmly. Top the apples with additional filling.

8. Pour ¼ cup water into the pan. 9. Cover and bake for 20 minutes.

10. Uncover and bake for an additional 25-35 minutes, until soft. Do not overbake as the apples will lose their shape.

BE FIT WITH BENEFIT

AFirstly, I love the way your question was phrased. I love that you seem to be excited for what is to come. When a woman reaches midlife, it is very oft accommodated with feelings of sadness and negativity, when in fact, it should not be that way! Reaching closer to the golden years is filled with excitement and many opportunities and should also be faced with feelings of rejuvenation. Gone are those physically taxing days caring for little ones. Now is the time to reap the nachas that you worked on all your life. Now is the time to explore new career opportunities. Now is the time to get involved in new social arenas and new chessed projects. Now is the time to reflect on days gone by and care for yourself properly. That being said, kudos to you for being proactive and asking about what you can do to boost your health and vitality. Here are some ideas to tap into:

Exercise and movement- As we age, it's normal to not have the stamina and agility we enjoyed in our younger years. But getting older doesn't have to mean becoming a couch potato. According to the CDC, all older adults—both men and women—can benefit from regular, moderate physical activity. This is true even for people with medical conditions such as arthritis, heart disease, obesity, and high blood pressure. Regular activity can positively impact our physical health as well as our mental and emotional well-being. It can help give us more energy and greater self-confidence, enabling us to embrace our later years with gusto. Simply put, exercise makes us feel good. It can help ease anxiety and depression symptoms, increase relaxation, and create an overall sense of well-being. Here are some exercise components to tap into: Yoga: Yoga is a lowimpact activity that won't strain your joints. At the same time, it helps you build up your muscles, stabilize your core, improve your flexibility, and strengthen your bones. Pilates:

Like yoga, Pilates offers an effective workout while being gentle on joints. It focuses on building a strong core in order to improve balance and stability. Aerobic exercise: Adding endurance activity to your day can help boost cardiovascular function, strengthen lungs and airways, and improve everyday stamina. What counts as aerobic exercise? Walking, swimming, and using a stationary bike are all good choices for older adults. Thirty minutes a day is the recommended amount. This can include three short, 10-minute sessions spread out over the day. Strength training: There are simple, low-impact bodyweight training exercises you can do at home to help reverse muscle loss and burn body fat. These include wall pushups, stair climbing, squats, and single-leg stands. Some strengthtraining routines also incorporate light hand weights (1 to 2 lbs.) or resistance bands. Aim for two to three workouts weekly to reap the most benefits.

Nutrition- There are specific dietary recommendations for improving energy and lessening fatigue. A diet that includes high levels of alcohol, caffeine, sugar, and foods high in fat and low in nutrients can deplete your energy. Some things to try are:

Incorporate grocery delivery into your routine.

Try to prepare multiple meals ahead of time so that you do not need to cook every day.

If your appetite changes during the day, eat your largest, most well-balanced meal when your appetite is strongest.

Ensure your diet includes plenty of fiber from nuts, fruits, vegetables, grains, and beans.

Limit saturated fats and opt instead for healthy fats such as coconut oil, olive oil, and avocado.

Exercise your mind- Staying mentally active will not only keep

you sharp but also can help with mental health. It can be as simple as working puzzles, reading and writing, and playing games. Many hobbies, such as needlepoint or sewing can also be a great way to stay mentally active.

Establish proper sleep hygiene- It is between the ages of 50-60 that your sleep may start playing tricks with you until your hormone levels settle once again. Be aware of your body’s need for rest. Go to bed as soon as you feel tired and get up at the same time each day. If you need a nap, don’t hesitate. Insomnia often plagues you at this stage and it is usually from other lifestyle problems that can easily be corrected. Making sure you don’t have too much stimulation or light will also help you sleep well.

Stay Hydrated-Drink plenty of water! This is the easiest one of all, but often overlooked. Keeping yourself hydrated is the number one way to feel better and boost energy! It helps in weight loss, balances your electrolytes, prevents headaches and muscle pain, and stimulates your mind. Adding lemon or cucumbers to your water enhances flavors and also provides you with a great way to get extra nutrients! I recommend getting a 32-ounce water bottle with a built-in straw and refilling it twice a day to ensure that you are getting the proper amount of water needed.

I am currently working with quite a few special women in their 70’s and they are losing weight beautifully since they learned to incorporate 3 healthy and filling meals and 2 snacks into their routine. They also now realize that when they were eating excess sugar and snacks, even from fruits, they suddenly felt pulled down and lethargic and decided to implement change. Women over 60 can lose weight weekly and once again build up muscle mass. It is hard work, but very rewarding!

This past Sunday morning, it was quite cold and windy. What are the chances of young men who aren't frum coming to daven and learn? Most people would choose to stay under their warm blankets and sleep, especially those who aren't from a religious background. Not at BJX (Brooklyn Jewish Xperience) Kiruv Center. In these photos, you will see one student who braved the frigid temperature and came to BJX Sunday morning on his Harley Davidson motorcycle. This past Shabbos, he received a "Bar Mitzvah" at 32 years old - his very first Aliya to the Torah in his life. Then on Sunday, he came to put on Tefillin and stayed for the Shiur. Another fellow who comes from a frum home, who has struggled terribly, woke up at 7am in order to make it on time for 9am davening. He also celebrated his one month anniversary of being clean! P O L I O : WHAT PARENTS NEED TO KNOW

What is polio?

Polio is caused by a highly contagious virus. Though most people who get infected with polio virus don't feel sick at all, others develop a sore throat, fever, headache, stomach pain or vomiting. Still others, about 1 in 25 infected persons, develop meningitis a stiff neck and severe muscle pain caused when the virus infects their brain and spinal cord. Approximately 1 out of 200 people develop irreversible paralysis, known as paralytic poliomyelitis. If the muscles we use to breathe become paralyzed, the person can die.

How does polio spread?

Polio spreads from person to person. It spreads when the stool or respiratory secretions of an infected person are introduced into the mouth of another person directly or through contaminated hands, objects, food, or water. The virus reproduces in the intestines and throat and is passed in the stool. Infected people without symptoms can still spread the virus. People with polio may be contagious as long as the virus is present in the throat and stool. The virus remains in the throat for about one to two weeks and in the stool for about three to six weeks after the onset of illness.

I've heard that people can get polio from the vaccine. How does this happen? There are two types of polio vaccines. One, called “inactivated polio vaccine” (IPV), is given as a shot. It contains dead polio virus that cannot reproduce in people. This is the version used in the U.S. The other, called “oral polio vaccine,” (OPV) is given by mouth and is not available in the US. It contains live, weakened polio virus. Because the virus can still reproduce at low levels, recently vaccinated people can shed the virus in their stools. Very rarely, the weakened OPV vaccine viruses can regain the ability to infect the brain or spinal cord. This can cause paralytic poliomyelitis in the person who had recently received OPV or in their unvaccinated close contacts (1 person per 2.6 million doses). If such a virus begins to circulate among unvaccinated people, polio outbreaks can occur.

So, is there a chance that my child gets polio from the vaccine if I choose to vaccinate?

No. OPV is still given in some countries, including Israel, but it is no longer used in the U.S. IPV is the only polio vaccine that has been given in the U.S. since 2000. Because the virus in IPV cannot make more copies of itself, it cannot cause polio, either in the person receiving the vaccine or those around them.

I keep my home clean and am careful with food in my kitchen, isn’t this protective against polio?

Household hygiene and safe food handling practices are helpful in preventing infections that spread on food, such as salmonella, but polio virus is different. It is very contagious and passes easily between people, even those without symptoms.

I give my child good nutrition. Doesn’t this protect my child from actually getting sick from polio?

A healthy diet is important for your children’s well being and for building a healthy immune system. But even strong, healthy children got polio and some suffered complications, such as paralysis and death, prior to the introduction of polio vaccines. Polio vaccination with IPV is the only clear way to protect your child from paralytic poliomyelitis.

How effective is the IPV vaccine?

The IPV vaccine is safe and effective and protects almost all children from paralysis (more than 99 out of 100) who get the recommended number of doses Children should get four doses of polio vaccine, given at 2 months, 4 months, 6 to 18 months, and 4 6 years of age. Side effects of the vaccine can include pain, redness or swelling at the site of the shot. These typically resolve after 1 2 days. Adults who were fully vaccinated as children and who are at risk of exposure now should get one adult booster dose vaccine.

My baby is so young. Isn’t this vaccine just too strong for my baby? Shouldn’t I wait to vaccinate until my child is older and stronger? The recommended dose of the vaccine is the right strength for your baby The IPV vaccine has been safely given to millions of young babies throughout the U S since the mid 1950s. The vaccine schedule has been designed with consideration to both vaccine safety and disease susceptibility. As such, any time you delay a vaccine, you unnecessarily leave your baby vulnerable to disease.

Can I protect my baby from polio by breastfeeding them?

If you were vaccinated for polio, it is possible that your baby may benefit from antibodies received before birth or from breastfeeding. But even if antibodies are passed to the baby, the amount of antibodies passed on may not be enough and will only offer protection for a short time before they break down Only by vaccinating your young baby will they have their own long lived protection against this infection.

My child has a cold. Can they still be vaccinated? Yes, children experiencing mild illnesses, such as colds, a low fever, an ear infection, or mild diarrhea, can still receive a vaccine. Mild illness does not affect how well the body responds to a vaccine and vaccines do not make a mild illness worse. Children taking antibiotics can get vaccines.
