New York, N.Y. – As the election frenzy dies down, political analysts are now evaluating the winners and losers, who had a decisive win, who had a tight win, which ones were surprising, and which were as expected.
They overlook the most incredible winner in the current election – the united Jewish communities of New York. By participating in record numbers, we generated a tremendous Kiddush Hashem and unequivocally showed that we will not tolerate government interference in the education of our children.
Organizations like the OU, UJO, Agudath Israel, and local community councils, have been appealing to community members for many years to participate in elections by going out to vote. They have long realized that politicians will only address the needs of communities who vote. However, the message didn’t resonate enough, and we never delivered a voter turnout of more than 25-30% of registered voters.
With the new education guidelines hovering over our Mosdos HaTorah, politicians, including the Governor, remained largely silent on the issue due to our low voter turnout, which deters
them from taking any controversial stance in our defense.
In response, a group of Rabbonim, community leaders, and philanthropists gathered several months ago to form “Ichud Klal Yisroel,” with a budget of 1.5 million dollars and a goal of bringing awareness about the effect of voting in achieving results in the political arena throughout New York.
In recent weeks “Ichud Klal Yisroel” ran a powerful campaign all over the Jewish media, in Yiddish and English, targeting large and smaller neighborhoods, explaining how critically urgent it is to vote, particularly in this election. Klal Yisroel responded and voted in unprecedented numbers.
For the first time, there was a record amount of voting in early elections and with absentee ballots. There were long lines at early voting locations in all neighborhoods, including Williamsburg, Boro Park, Flatbush, Monsey, and the Five Towns. Never before have there been long lines during early voting, barely on Election Day.
As soon as the Governor and other Democratic candidates noticed increased voting awareness and activity in our
neighborhoods, they broke their silence on the subject of education. After more than a year of waiting for the Governor to respond, days before the election, she publicized a letter where she praised our education system and promised to help protect it.
What brought about this change? The Governor saw pictures of long lines at the early voting locations throughout our neighborhoods; she knew this was serious business. She saw that our children’s education is not negotiable. The same happened with other candidates like Sean Maloney, who was running to represent Monsey and never addressed our concerns until several days before the elections.
Election Day saw a historic turnout with more than 200,000 votes cast throughout Jewish communities, a powerful message that reverberated among all New York politicians.
Secular media outlets reported that the much anticipated ‘red wave’ happened only in New York. Democrats lost four congressional seats to Republicans, among them the 17th district, where the most powerful Democrat in Congress lost to a first-time Republican opponent,
THE GREATEST WINNER IN THE ELECTIONS THEOUR HISTORIC PARTICIPATION IN THE ELECTIONS SENT A POWERFUL MESSAGE TO ALBANY THAT OUR EDUCATION SYSTEM IS NOT NEGOTIABLE | SECULAR MEDIA CONFIRMS RED WAVE ONLY IN NEW YORK STATE DUE TO HISTORIC JEWISH VOTE IN RESPONSE TO NEW EDUCATION GUIDELINES | MASSIVE UNITED ROCKLAND COUNTY VOTE BRINGS REMARKABLE CONGRESSIONAL WIN FOR ASSEMBLYMAN MIKE LAWLER | MESSAGE REACHES GOVERNOR AS SHE PLEDGES TO PROTECT EDUCATION TWO DAYS AFTER ELECTION | SPECIAL THANKS TO ALL WHO WAITED IN LONG LINES TO VOTE – YOUR MESSAGE RESOUNDED THROUGHOUT THE POLITICAL CORRIDORS | DISAPPOINTMENT AS THOUSANDS REALIZE – TOO LATE – THEY HAVE NOT REGISTERED TO VOTE
Assemblyman Mike Lawler. National newspapers confirmed that the most significant part of the ‘red wave’ in New York resulted from the “Ichud Klal Yisroel” vote in response to the imposed education guidelines.
Democrats in New York also lost Senate seats and Assembly seats that they had been holding onto for many years, further emphasizing that we can no longer be ignored.
The response was swift in coming. Politicians in Albany suddenly saw us as a force to be reckoned with or else pay a steep price. On Thursday, two days after the elections, the Governor and her Chief of Staff called many community leaders to inform them that we were heard, and promised to address our most pressing need, the issue of interference in our education system.
Contrary to warnings by political analysts, Albany did not shut their doors because 90% of our votes were for Lee Zeldin and other Republican candidates. Paradoxically, they responded immediately by offering their assistance, a step we have been waiting for, for many months.
Monsey residents emerged as the most outstanding winners when they successfully elected a true friend –Assemblyman Mike Lawler.
The Jewish community of Monsey and surrounding neighborhoods paid a debt of gratitude to Assemblyman Mike Lawler
for all his efforts and activities on their behalf, such as:
1. Creating a department within his office to help Monsey residents. Hundreds of individuals, mosdos, congregations, and organizations benefitted from these services.
2. The Rockland County Republican Party used to be a hotbed of antisemitism, causing constant problems for the Jewish community. As soon as Mike Lawler was elected, he ended the hate and created an upheaval by cleaning up and getting rid of our enemies. He transformed the Republican Party into one of the greatest advocates for Jewish causes.
3. When Albany publicized the new educational guidelines, Mike Lawler was the first elected official to make a public condemnation and praised our education system at every opportunity.
4. Mike Lawler already received a commitment from future Speaker of Congress Kevin McCarthy that he would enact a law forbidding State government to interfere in education in private schools.
Mike Lawler entered a tight race against one of the most powerful Democrats in Congress and won by 2800 votes, thanks to the Monsey bloc vote of more than 25,000. Despite the president’s request to vote for Sean Maloney, 86% voted for Lawler, a massive win for the Jewish community of Monsey in particular and of greater New York.
“Ichud Klal Yisroel” takes this
opportunity to thank all of Klal Yisroel for going out and voting, responding to our plea, going out in large numbers despite the difficulties, and standing in long lines and not going home. Thank you for sending a message to Albany that we have a foremost priority for our education system to remain intact without interference from government agencies.
We apologize to those who had to wait in long lines. It wasn’t easy. Everyone was busy, yet no one turned back. Know that these difficulties have achieved the desired goal. Albany saw you and heard you and has already committed to work for us.
In conclusion, we must point out that thousands of people wanted to go vote, but realized too late, that they were not registered and they couldn’t register in time. Upon analyzing the numbers, it turns out that around 30% of our community is not registered, a total of 60,000 votes. Note that now is the time to register to vote in future elections and add to our political strength.
If you have not yet registered to vote, please call 1-800-FOR-VOTE (1-800367-8683) and request a voter application. Please don’t wait for the next election, do it now.
We close with a prayer to Hashem that our efforts bring the desired results, the education guidelines should become null and void, and we can continue providing our children with a Torah education unhindered.

• Carpentry-walls/closets,
Eitan Baron knocks at Mr. Perl’s door, and Martin pretends he is Perl’s secretary. He tells Eitan to have his yeshivah’s administrator call him directly about a donation.
Martin begins emailing Dan and his friends, under the name “Shadow,” urging them to be careful when they sabotage the Arabs, and not harm any innocent people. Dan and his friends are furious at Martin.
Yaron Kornblit of the GSS, and his assistant Gil, are shocked at the change in Martin.
CHAPTER THIRTY THREE Monsenego called on Friday morning, a few minutes after Martin decided that he’d finished going through all the drawers in the computer desk, and that it was time to move on to the bookshelves. His attention was drawn to a light pink book with a fat spine, with the title The Revelation, by S. Sternfeld.
He opened it to the first page, and then the international call came in. “Hello?” he answered the phone.
“Good morning—it’s morning there in Israel already, isn’t it?” The voice spoke fluent English.
“Oh.” Martin sat down on the swivel chair. “Is this Mr. Monsenego?” “Yes. And you are Yosef Kirschenbaum, if I understood my daughter-in-law’s father correctly?”
“That’s right.” Martin leaned back in the chair, studying the picture of the Kosel that filled the first page of the pink book. “I wanted to ask if you know what’s going on with Michoel Perl.”
“Why, what’s going on?” Monsenego
asked calmly.
“I have no idea; I was hoping you might know. I haven’t seen him in Israel since he traveled in for your son’s wedding.”
“I have no idea where he is either,” the other man said thoughtfully. “I know that he had planned to travel to relatives in America a few days after our wedding.”
“Oh, the Weisskopfs,” Martin filled in the information.
“I see you’re quite in the know. Yes, but on Sunday, two days before his flight, I wanted to send my driver to take him around the city—and he didn’t answer the phone.”
“Why around the city? I don’t understand.”
“To collect money for the Jews of Eretz Yisrael.” Monsenego provided what he thought was a self-understood answer.
“Oh,” Martin said, trying to digest the information. “And you’re saying he didn’t answer your call?”
“No. Not that day, nor the next. In fact, I haven’t spoken to him since.”
“And you weren’t worried about him?”
“Not really,” the man said. Then he explained: “Michoel is the type of person who moves from place to place, without too many firm plans, and without informing anyone.”
“So you think he left the city but just didn’t tell you anything?”
“Right. He’s a nice guy, but not exactly predictable. So I wasn’t really worried about his safety or anything, although to be honest, at one point I began
to worry that he had been offended by something at our simchah.” Monsenego’s voice grew concerned. “Not that I know of anything specific that may have occurred…but maybe we didn’t host him comfortably enough? Maybe someone had said something to him? He’s a sensitive person... Anyway, like I said, I wasn’t really worried—but I was wondering a bit. But now that you’re telling me that he hasn’t gone back to Israel, that does sound a bit disquieting.”
“I’m not sure he didn’t come back,” Martin said. He leafed through the large book, without looking into it. “He may have come back, but he’s not here. Perhaps he decided, for his own reasons, to rent an apartment somewhere else…” He looked around. “Maybe something here isn’t good for him, for some reason.”
“Here?” Businesspeople had a highly developed sense of smell and very big ears indeed. “Where?”
Martin swallowed. “In Yerushalayim,” he answered meekly. There was silence on the line.
“Look, Yosef, perhaps I’ll get some of my own people on the case,” Monsenego said suddenly. “I’ll ask them to try to find out what happened after that Shabbos. If you find anything out, please let me know. We’ll update each other.”
“You have a detective office?” That was all he needed—private investigators from Mexico paying a visit to this house! “I thought you had…um…an

insurance company.”
“An insurance company? Who said that? Is that what Michoel told you?”
“We never spoke about you.”
“I have a factory for paper products,” the man said with a chuckle. “And I’m going to contact a detective agency to find out what went on with him here, in Mexico. If we don’t find anything, we’ll think what to do next. Maybe we’ll send someone to search in Israel.”
“You know, in Israel they have detectives and investigators, too.”
“You’re not Israeli, right? I could hear that you’ve got a good North American accent.”
“Right,” Martin affirmed, wishing this conversation would end. “I’m originally from Greater Sudbury, Canada, but I live in Yerushalayim now.”
“If you’re there, close to things, let’s see what you can do before I get involved in this story. First, I’ll give you the phone number of his relative, Weisskopf, who was always in contact with him. Michoel once gave it to me. Try to find out what he knows about Michoel, and let me know what he says, okay?”
Martin couldn’t have asked for more. He had made a triple play: he’d gotten significant information about Perl; the phone number of Shimon Weisskopf; and—most important—Monsenego was throwing the search ball into his court for now. There was no reason to worry about investigators starting to nose around the area of the house.
But Weisskopf’s number proved to be a disappointment. Although Martin tried numerous times to call, there was never any answer. ***
Dov had actually offered to take her to Yerushalayim, but knowing how busy he was at work these days,
she’d reassured him that she could manage just fine on the buses. In the front pocket of her bag was a kokosh cake for Mali, which she had left from Shabbos, and in the second pocket was a letter that the Non-Profits Registrar had sent to her. It was this letter that had galvanized her to get up and travel to Michoel again, despite all.
And if he wouldn’t open the door for her again—
She didn’t know what she’d do. Dov had explained to her briefly that they had to file some type of reports about the organization’s activities, and apparently these reports had not been submitted. This letter was the final reminder before all activities would be suspended by the Registrar.
She was also listed as a member of the organization’s board, a procedural matter that had been important to Michoel at the time. But never, until today, had it been relevant to her. Now, he’d have no choice; he’d have to open the door for her. Otherwise, she’d tell him that she was resigning from anything to do with the organization and the donations.
Not that she’d stop collecting tzedakah. Chas v’shalom! She didn’t feel capable of forfeiting the zechusim she had accumulated over the years. But if Michoel was planning to continue with this estrangement—she would not be able to collect for him. There were lots of other organizations who would be happy to have a veteran gabba’is tzedakah, with more than two decades of experience, working for them. She waited for Mali outside the building where she lived. Mali came out three minutes later, a bit flushed. She thanked her mother effusively for the cake, and casually invited her inside.
“No, no.” Hinda had no intention of going inside. It would be a complicated
visit, and if she’d ever decide to make it, she’d have to think it out very well first. “Thanks for the invitation, but I don’t really have time now. You like it here, right?”
“Yes. It was nicer in the other place, but it’s good here, too.”
“I’m happy to hear that. And I’m really sorry that I can’t come in now. I’ve got to drop in to Michoel.”
“If he opens the door for you,” Mali muttered. “Should I come with you?”
“That would be nice.”
They walked together, not talking much along the way, because it was awkward for them both. Hinda was worried about the envelope she was carrying, and about her uncle. She didn’t want him to get in trouble with the organization, because he had little in his life besides it. She also didn’t want that if, chas v’shalom, there were any problems, the fallout would be hers to deal with. Based on his shouting during her previous visit, she knew it was possible that he would blame her for everything that did or did not happen.
The knock at the door made Martin rub his eyes and raise them from The Revelation. He had spent almost the whole Shabbos reading, but hadn’t finished the book yet. Maybe he would just ignore the knocking. The intercom could also remain silent. I mean, why can’t Michoel just not be home right now? He went to the doctor. The grocery. The bank. The Kosel. Haifa. The possibilities are endless!
Just before anyone could try ringing the bell, Martin disconnected the automatic answer. Let the person knock. Whoever it was could do that until tomorrow. As far as he was concerned, there was no one home.
Recap: The security agency director shows up at the hospital. The police officer there asks him to give a statement to the police chief.
Raizy hears about the break-in and speaks to her mother, who is still in shock and sounds weak and unfocused. She can’t believe it’s her mother, and is still reeling from the news when her husband comes home.
Avrumi asks Esther Mindy to order breakfast for his mother.
The Investor gets the reports that Mr. Grossman is pulling out of the ProMedical investment. He promises Glacier that he’ll be getting his reward.
Mr. Grossman is upset that he has to pull out of the deal, but acknowledges that this is what he must do, for his family’s sake.
“Look, there’s no time to waste, we’ve got a criminal to catch,” the police chief said brusquely to the security agency director. “All you can tell me is what you heard from Mr. Grossman when he hired you, and Mr. Grossman told me all that already. I need to speak with your injured man to get the full story clear.”
The security agency director, Mr. Brim, shrugged. “You can try to ask him whatever you like. When we left the hospital, he was just regaining consciousness. I doubt he’s in any physical condition to help you with the case.”
Lieutenant Andrews tapped his radio impatiently. “As soon as he’s alert enough, please notify us. We’ll be taking a statement from
Mr. Grossman tomorrow morning. Let us know by then if anything changes.”
Mr. Brim nodded.
Avrumi looked on, the feeling of unreality that had been accompanying him throughout the long hours he’d spent at his mother’s side, helping her and dealing with the police.
“I’m done, sir.” A large blond man came into the dining room, holding a small evidence bag aloft.
Lieutenant Andrews nodded, taking the proffered bag. “Did you manage to find anything?”
The man shook his head indeterminately. “Whatever I found is in there. I don’t know if it’s connected to the case.”
Lieutenant Andrews nodded. “Thank you.”
In response, the blond man turned to leave.
“Okay, now that our forensics guy has been through the crime site, we’ll be comfortable with allowing you to use the rest of the house and property,” Lieutenant Andrews told Avrumi.
Avrumi nodded, wondering wryly to himself when the lieutenant had become master of the Grossman residence.
“Okay, so I guess we’ll be going now,” Lieutenant Andrews said to Avrumi. “We’ll be taking this bag of forensic evidence as well as the footage from your video surveillance cameras and see what we can come up with. We’ll be waiting for your father’s statement tomorrow morning.”
Both he and Mr. Brim got up to leave, vacating their seats at the
“Wait!” Avrumi cried, suddenly galvanized by their announcement. “Who said the guy-whoever did this, isn’t going to come back for more?! If it’s your guy in the hospital, Mr. Brim, then the criminal is still around and we’ve got no protection!”
Mr. Brim and the police chief looked at each other.
“Well, your father did pay for protection, so I’ll be happy to get some of my men here to watch the house,” Mr. Brim said.
“Based on what your father said, he’s already sent a strong message to those people who have been threatening him that he’s doing what they wanted,” the police officer said. “I hope your family is not in danger any longer.”
“Hope is not enough!” Avrumi’s voice was strident. “And Mr. Brim, excuse me for saying so, but if your first guy wasn’t able to protect my mother, then how will it help now if more of your employees come?”
Mr. Brim flinched. “Well,” he coughed, “your father didn’t really think your family would be attacked, because the threats were mostly at the workplace. He only ordered house protection because he was leaving the country, one guard twenty-four hours a day. You know, all our guards wear a button they can press for instant backup. But for some reason, Al didn’t press it. We still don’t know why.”
“So who says the new guards you send will press the button in time?” Avrumi challenged.
“How about we send two guards this time?” Mr. Brim offered, clearly eager to keep the Grossmans happy. “Also, we can run a complete security checkup, where we’ll go through the property and see what
the weak points are and how we can beef up your physical safety.”
Avrumi nodded, reluctantly. “Okay, I guess that’s what we’ll do.”
There was no way to reach his father anymore, after receiving the call that Mr. Grossman had boarded, so Avrumi would just have to do as he saw fit.
“I’ll get my men down here as soon as possible.” Mr. Brim said. “In fact, I’ll wait here until the new guards arrive and my security specialist arrives to do the checkup and make suggestions.”
“Good.” Avrumi said.
“If you have anything you want to add to the case, feel free to notify us,” Lieutenant Andrews, who’d been standing by during the conversation, turned to leave.
“Thank you for all your help, officer,” Avrumi said.
He walked the police officer to the door and watched as the blue and white police car drove away, his heart quailing inside him.
Somehow, the police officer in his blue uniform gave him a feeling of safety, so much more than some plainclothes security guy.
He felt a presence behind him.
“The police left?” Esther Mindy asked.
Avrumi nodded, his expression betraying his feelings.
“Well, I guess Hashem is watching over us instead, then,” Esther Mindy said.
“It’s not a joke!” Avrumi said, uncharacteristically annoyed. “The criminal could have…”
Esther Mindy looked shocked. “I wasn’t trying to-I mean, Avrumi, Hashem is watching, you know. I didn’t mean to make light of what happened. It’s petrifying!”
Avrumi tried to relax his shoulders. “Yeah,” he said. “Maybe we should check the mezuzos, huh?”
Esther Mindy smiled back, to show she forgave his outburst. It was definitely a challenging situation.
The moment dissipated instantly as a bike pulled up in front of their house. Both of them tensed.
“It’s just the Coffee Beans order,” Esther Mindy laughed as she saw the distinctive logo on the bike’s basket.
“Good. I can’t handle any more stress,” Avrumi muttered. “Caffeine is a good idea.”
“Here’s your order,” the Mexican delivery man said, dumping two shopping bags at the top of the step. Avrumi wrinkled his nose.
“Yum, smells heaven!” Esther Mindy said, picking up the bags. “Let’s go eat!”
She turned to go into the house. Avrumi followed.
The house felt quiet and eerie now that the police officers had cleared out.
“How are you doing, Mommy?” Avrumi walked into the living room, pasting a smile on his face.
“I’m feeling fine,” his mother said, and her voice did sound stronger.
“Are you up to having breakfast?” Avrumi asked. It seemed his mother was getting back to herself. She no longer looked so pale. “Esther Mindy ordered from Coffee Beans.”
His mother grimaced, ever so slightly. “Coffee Beans?” she said.
“Okay. Yes, breakfast is a good idea, though I’m not sure that Coffee Beans is. I’ll just go upstairs to freshen up a bit. You and Esther Mindy can go to the breakfast nook to start eating meanwhile.”
Yes, his mother was definitely back to herself if she was already turning up her nose at her daughter-inlaw’s choices. Avrumi watched his
mother lift herself from the recliner and make her way as steadily as she could to the carpeted stairs.
“Great, Ma,” he said.
But it wasn’t. It was positively awkward, in fact, when the three of them were sitting around the small table in the breakfast nook.
“Which flavor of cheesecake would you like, Mommy?” Avrumi asked. “They sent three flavors: caramel, sweet potato and maple.”
“Sweet potato?!” Mrs. Grossman sounded scandalized. “Who makes sweet potato cheesecake?!”
Avrumi and Esther Mindy exchanged glances. Esther Mindy bade her cheeks not to flush.
Yes, she had made sweet potato cheesecake-after tasting it once at Coffee Beans, she’d been sold on it as the perfect dessert to make her new husband. And Avrumi had loved it.
“You don’t need to take the sweet potato,” he said quickly.
“Oh, just pass the salad,” Mrs. Grossman said irritably. “I doubt that Coffee Beans knows how to make cheesecake anyway.”
Avrumi pressed his lips together and passed his mother the large plastic salad bowl. Why had Esther Mindy ordered sweet potato cheesecake, anyway? Hadn’t they just discussed that she would tone it down around his mother?
Esther Mindy silently took the sweet potato cheesecake, ignoring Avrumi’s pointed stare. It was okay, she was allowed to be herself even around her mother-in-law. ***
Yaakov listened quietly as Raizy explained exactly what had happened in the Grossman house a few hours before.
“So, I asked Avrumi to put me on the phone with my mother, and
she sounded so different, Yaakov. Like a shadow. Could you believe it? My mother is like, this rock of a person. She doesn’t get affected by anything.”
Raizy winced at her own statement as she remembered the many times her tears had left her mother cold and unsympathetic. “Now, it was like, no, my mother is not impenetrable. She’s not invincible. She’s just a person, and she can be afraid, also.”
Yaakov nodded. Suddenly, a smile quirked at his lips.
“What?” Raizy asked.
“We should have recorded the conversation,” he said. “We should have recorded it and saved it, so that the next time your mother criticizes you and you feel like crying, we’ll play it and you’ll remember that she’s just a person.”
Raizy smiled halfheartedly back. Could that thought actually help her? Maybe. Maybe if she no longer let her self-esteem get so wrapped up in her mother’s opinion of her and she realized that her mother didn’t have any inherent power to destroy her. That the only power her mother had was the belief that Raizy had in her words.
“It’s so scary,” Raizy said, like a sigh, as she remembered the breakin. “Can you imagine, my father involved with such nasty people? And he didn’t get scared off by them, he kept on pouring in money into this doctor’s business, because he wanted to help people.”
“I hope he’s pulling out of it now,” Yaakov looked concerned.
“Yes, Avrumi told me that he already announced it publicly, that he’s going to be taking out all the money he gave them. It’s so hard, I wonder how he was able to do that, announce that he gave up.”
“Well, he can’t exactly sacrifice his family for the whole world,”
Yaakov said reasonably. “He has a responsibility to his own family first.”
Raizy nodded. “Of course.”
Then a thought struck her-wasn’t that exactly what her mother did? Sacrificed her family for the world? The thought made her uncomfortable, but it stuck in her mind.
***
Mindy chomped on a carrot stick as she spoke to her cousin, Shaindy.
“Yeah, it’s crazy! You heard what happened to the Grossmans?”
“Of course, they had a break-in last night, I heard all about it. So scary.”
“I know! I feel so bad for them.
Nebach, it’s really not simple to have so much money.”
Shaindy laughed. “Like that stops anyone from wanting to get rich.”
“Right!” Mindy laughed with her.
“I’m just pointing it out, that there are things that really rich people deal with. Don’t you think that they’re totally ready to hide from embarrassment?”
“Why embarrassment?”
“I don’t know, would you want the whole world to talk about your tzaros? You chap that everyone is talking about this break-in now, and our dear aunt does not appreciate being spoken about, if you know what I mean.”
“Oh, I know what you mean. She only wants to be gushed about, right?”
Mindy chortled. “Right. That’s why I feel bad for her, kind of.”
“It’s fine, she doesn’t need to be so perfect. So everyone will know that the Grossmans also have problems sometimes and they’re not this shiny perfect family that does everything perfectly.”

I am the person you bullied at school,
I am the person who didn’t know how to be cool,
I am the person you alienated,
I am the person you ridiculed and hated.
I am the person who sat on her own,
I am the person who walked home alone,
I am the person you scared every day,
I am the person who had nothing to say.
I am the person with hurt in her eyes,
I am the person you never saw cry,
I am the person living alone with her fears,
I am the person destroyed by
her peers.
I am the person who drowned in your scorn,
I am the person who wished she hadn’t been born,
I am the person you destroyed for ‘fun’,
I am the person, but not the only one.
I am the person whose name you don’t know,
I am the person who just can’t let go,
I am the person who has feelings too,
And I was a person, just like you.
-Laura (Bullying UK)
Books, newspapers, and magazines argue that our children are going through
a “friendship crisis.” While our children’s relationships are definitely different than when we grew up, in reality, I don’t believe we are facing a friendship crisis. In reality, we are facing a bullying crisis that has permeated our community.
A national survey reported that over forty percent of students say that they are afraid to go to a school bathroom because of bullying. One in seven children in America reports acting as a bully or a bully victim. Every day, 160,000 students skip school because they fear violence or intimidation. In places where the internet is used for social networking, students describe cyberbullying through name calling and verbal attacks.
Do we have a friendship crisis?
Probably not. Do we have a bully crisis? Definitely. How do we address the bullying crisis?
First, you need to recognize if your child is a victim of bullying. Below are some telltale signs:
• Returns home from school with torn, damaged, or missing clothing
• Seems afraid of going to school
• Suddenly begins to do poorly in school
• Complains frequently of headaches, stomachaches, or other illnesses.
• Has trouble sleeping or frequent bad dreams
• Appears anxious or suffers from low self-esteem
How to Stop the Bullying Cycle
• Talk to your child. Tell your child that you are concerned about them and that you would like to help them. You can ask direct questions such as, “Are there any kids at school who treat you meanly?” Or indirect questions such as, “Are there any kids at school who you really don’t like? Why?” Broaching the topic is the first step towards prevention.
• Keep your emotions in check. Of course, you need to empathize with your child, but if you become overly emotional, your child will hesitate before talking to you about it again. Stay
calm so that you can act as a supportive figure in your child’s life.
• Talk to the staff at your child’s school. Set up an appointment and explain that you are concerned. Ask questions about what you can do and what measures the school can take to prevent bullying. If you are not comfortable talking to your child’s teacher, make an appointment with a principal or the school’s guidance counselor.
• Teach your child to walk with confidence. If your child appears confident and walks away from the situation, he is signaling to the bully that the bully cannot hurt him.
• Encourage other friendships. Promote true friendships by telling your child to invite other children for play dates or study dates.
And, after we address the bullying crisis, we teach children how to make long lasting relationships. Because research shows that children do need friends, however, they do not need tons of friends nor do they need friends to surround them 24/7. Through a child’s interactions with even these one or two friends, he will develop necessary social skills.
But, what if your child does not even have one or two friends? Is there a way that you as a parent can help
them out? Well, the answer is yes and no. Your child has to want to make friends, but once the desire is there, you can definitely aid them in their quest for friendship.
I’d also like to take a minute to discuss what I mean by friendship. For different ages, friendship means different things.
In Preschool (one month to four years) children are observing social interactions to see how to behave in the future. Other children who they get along with and they spend a lot of time with are considered friends at this age. Next, in Early Elementary (five to six years), friends are mostly based on convenience and change abruptly. Children will often change “best friends” weekly at this age.
Then, Middle Childhood (seven to ten years), Children begin to choose their friends based on compatibility and shared interests. Friendships at this stage are based heavily on loyalty.
The last stage of childhood friendship, I will call the Transitional years (ten to twelve): Right before their teenage years, children are starting to recognize changes in their bodies and thoughts. They have a strong sense of self and look for friends who will complement their strengths.

If you don’t have enough copper in your diet, hemoglobin production becomes impaired, along with many other aspects of iron metabolism
· Being anemic does not automatically mean that you’re iron deficient. Anemia typically relates to impaired iron recycling, not deficiency, and impaired iron recycling is caused by copper and retinol deficiency
· The best way to lower excess iron is to donate blood, one to four times a year. Most adult men and elderly women have high iron and could benefit from regular blood donation, as high iron is extremely toxic and destroys health. An even better strategy is to remove smaller amounts of blood every month
· To raise your copper level, you could use a copper supplement, but foods like grass-fed beef liver, bee pollen and whole food vitamin C are better
· If you’re a farmer or grow your own food, the best way to put copper back into the soil, to get it into the food, is to add copper sulfate. Before you plant, simply spray the soil with copper sulfate, 10 to 15 pounds per acre, or use a copper sulfate foliage spray
By a famed nutritionist:
Morley Robbins, MBA, CHC, a repeat guest in several publications, is the founder of the Magnesium Advocacy Group. He’s best known as the Magnesium Man, and is the author of “Cu-RE Your Fatigue: The Root Cause and How to Fix It on Your Own,” in which he explains the roles of magnesium, copper, iron, vitamins A and D and other essential nutrients.
His Root Cause Protocol is the implementation of that information. We’re currently planning to write a book together, which will focus on the little-understood importance of copper and its interaction with iron.
As explained by Robbins, if copper is lacking in your diet, iron will build up in your liver, which changes its physiology and immunoproperties. Liver metabolism is highly dependent on copper and retinol, and there's not a lot of awareness of that.
“It's a very sophisticated process of interaction between copper and iron, and if that interaction doesn't go well, iron is going to start to accumulate in the tissues. It's going to start in the liver, but it's going to go elsewhere too,” he says.
“I think that is kind of the takeaway of these conversations — to make sure people know that iron does accumulate, and that iron can be reduced through blood donations. Especially as you get into your 50s, 60s, 70s, it needs to be a regular part of your health routine.”
The clinical term for excess iron in the liver is hemosiderosis, and it’s so pervasive as to be near-universal. But where does the excess iron actually come from? And why is it that many with
high iron stores have low serum ferritin?
As Robbins explains, oftentimes, low serum ferritin is not at all a sign of iron deficiency, but rather a deficiency in copper and retinol. The deficiency in copper basically locks iron in the liver and prevents it from being recycled as it should:
“It's important for practitioners to not measure iron status with just one marker. I think a lot of practitioners are falling into that trap of just using serum ferritin. There are three key ways to measure iron status: Hemoglobin, serum iron and serum ferritin.
The biggest concentration of iron in the body is in our hemoglobin; 70% of the iron is in our red blood cells ... Hemoglobin is essential to understand what is going on with the biggest bulk of iron.
The second marker that I really focus on is called serum iron. It's less than 1% of the iron, but it's a very important measure of iron because it's really getting at the iron recycling program. Every second of every day, we have to turn over 2.5 million red blood cells. That's a lot of activity. In the course of 24 hours it's 200 billion red blood cells that need to be turned over.
But what's a surprise is to learn that only 25 milligrams (mg) of iron are needed to support that 24-hour cycle, but 24 of those 25 milligrams, 95% of the iron, is coming from this recycling program. So, it’s a very significant understanding that the serum iron only represents a small percent, but it represents the efficiency of the iron recycling.”
Ideally, hemoglobin should be between 12.5 and 13.5 for women, 14.5 to 15.5 for men. Serum iron should ideally be about 100 for women and 120 for men. The closer serum iron is to these, the more efficient your recycling is.
The third iron measure is serum ferritin. There are four different types of
ferritin in your body, broadly categorized as heavy chain and light chain. Heavy chain ferritin refers to ferritin protein inside cells and mitochondria that require copper to work properly. Serum ferritin refers to ferritin in your plasma, is outside the cell — and also outside the red blood cells, the hemoglobin.
“What is not well-known is that this ferritin that shows up in the blood is very iron-poor. It doesn't have iron in it. The iron has been discharged in the liver and then the protein gets secreted out ... So, serum ferritin is not representative of iron per se. The iron was discharged in the liver ...
I would never use ferritin only as an indication of iron status. You need to see hemoglobin, serum iron, and serum ferritin. You need to see them in relationship to each other ...
[When] serum ferritin starts to get high, it's highly correlated with inflammation or an infection. And again, it makes sense. The liver is taking it on the chin. Iron is not being metabolized properly. Pathogens might be involved. And so, the body starts to secrete the ferritin in a more significant way ...
Serum ferritin should be between 20 and 50. That seems to be a nice sweet spot for people. When the serum ferritin begins to get up in the hundreds, there's a significant likelihood that there's pathology in the liver that's causing that...
For women, the serum ferritin red flag goes up at 150. For men, the red flag goes up at 300. It can go up into the 5,000s and even higher, with severe chronic disease and inflammation ...
Low ferritin is an indication of metabolic breakdown in the spleen ... it's some kind of parasitic dynamic that's affecting protein production. The ferritin protein is not getting transcribed properly ...
So, low ferritin ... means low recycling. Something in the iron recycling system is out of balance and needs attention. I would argue that, almost without exception, it's a lack of bioavailable copper. The spleen organ is intensely
copper dependent. The liver intensely copper dependent. That's not well known in clinical circles.”
So, to summarize, one of the most common errors doctors will make is to prescribe iron pills when serum ferritin is low. More than likely, what’s needed is copper, retinol and other factors to support iron recycling. Unfortunately, articles and textbooks on iron metabolism rarely if ever mention the copper side, even though copper plays a far more important role in the recycling of iron.
Most all men and elderly women have excess iron. The reason for this is because many foods are fortified with iron, and your body has no excretory system for iron besides blood loss. So, it accumulates, and if the recycling mechanism doesn’t work properly, the iron gets lodged in tissues.
This is why regular blood donations are so important. Less iron means less oxidative stress, which is going to create less metabolic dysfunction, which results in fewer health problems and less tissue damage.
Every day you’re alive, your body accumulates about 1 mg of iron. Add up 1 mg of iron for every day of your life, and you’ll realize you won’t be able to eliminate all of it even if you tried. When you take out one unit of blood (500 cc), you remove about 250 mg of iron.
If donating a full pint (half a liter, 500 ml or about 8 ounces) of blood three to four times a year is problematic, you can remove blood in smaller amounts once a month on the schedule listed below.
Men 150 ml
Elderly Women 100 ml
Young Women 50 ml
If you have congestive heart failure or severe COPD, you should discuss this with your doctor, but otherwise this is a fairly appropriate recommendation for most. I personally remove 60 cc or 2 ounces of blood once a week, which is about 7 pints per year. This is a large
amount but because it is done slowly it is far better tolerated. Robbins adds:
“I think what's amazing is the sheer simplicity of doing a blood donation, and what it does to revitalize the body. When you have that blood loss, it trips a wire for erythropoietin, a very important hormone that triggers the production of new red blood cells.
And the beauty is it actually has two signals. The second signal is, let go of the iron in the tissue. It has a very powerful effect of releasing the iron to get it back down to the bone marrow, where it's needed to make the new red blood cells.”
To fully understand iron metabolism, you also need to understand the roles of hepcidin and hemosiderin. A ferritin protein can hold as many as 4,500 atoms of iron. Each iron atom has four unpaired electrons, which causes oxidative stress. Hemosiderin, an iron-storage complex composed of partially digested ferritin and lysosomes, can hold 10 times more iron than ferritin.
This also means it holds 10 times more unpaired electrons. When hemosiderin builds up in your tissue, that's when you start having serious issues with iron regulation.
“What's wildly confusing is hepcidin, [which is encoded by] the HAMP gene,” Robbins says. “Hepcidin is an antimicrobial peptide. So, it's got some connection to pathogens. And what's it trying to do? Hepcidin is trying to get iron out of the circulation, to get it away from the pathogens. But it's a bit of a slippery fish because it reacts to iron status. It reacts to inflammation status. It reacts to hormonal status.
Estrogen and testosterone have significant influence over hepcidin. It's reacting to copper status ... Elevated levels of active hormone D [vitamin D] can suppress hepcidin. Retinol deficiency can increase hepcidin ...
The key is understanding that this constant recycling system of the red
blood cells, the iron doorway, is being opened by a copper doorman. And if copper isn't doing its job, we're going to have a problem. And what is hepcidin's job?
Hepcidin shuts down the iron doorway. So, we have this significant dynamic between this very important iron egress that needs bioavailable copper, and if bioavailable copper's not there, this hepcidin protein is going to shut it down.
That's where a lot of the confusion is because the true anemia that exists on the planet isn't one of iron deficiency. It's one of copper deficiency not allowing for proper iron recycling. That's a very important nuance.
And the misunderstanding is that iron may look low in the blood, ferritin looks low or hemoglobin looks low, serum iron looks low, but it's high in the tissue. There's no blood test that measures iron status in the tissue.”
A colleague of Robbins in Miami, Florida, has developed a way to measure iron in the liver and brain using a Tesla 2 MRI and a novel scoring technique. This technique was catalyzed by my previous interview with Robbins, because the doctor in question was initially skeptical, but after measuring his own liver iron, he was shocked at the amount stored in there.
But iron is also stored in other organs, including your heart, which can have serious consequences. Robbins explains:
“Jerry Sullivan, a pathologist — his real focus was on cardiology — developed what became known as the iron heart hypothesis. It's not a very popular thesis with cardiologists, but he was able to prove that it was accumulation of iron in the heart muscle cells that were causing the wide spectrum of all the issues, whether it's atrial fibrillation, enlarged heart, any kind of myocardial infarct.
He was able to link it back to the accumulation of iron, and what that
was doing to kill energy production in that incredibly important organ in our body. So, the accumulation of iron in our organs is very significant, because these organs are supposed to be producing energy to do their function ...
Too much iron syncs up with the symptoms that are laid out in the Merck Manual. You can trace just almost every one of them back to this iron-copper dysregulation, because copper's supposed to be regulating the iron. And when it doesn't do that, it starts to accumulate ... and then cause dysfunction and dysregulation in the body.”
As mentioned, iron recycling depends on copper and retinol, both of which are lacking in our food supply, thanks to depleted soils. Copper is further eliminated through processing and refining. Making matters worse, our food supply is chockful of iron, sugar and seed oils (which are loaded with linoleic acid) and this triad suppresses copper and retinol function.
For these reasons, copper supplementation can be a good idea, especially if you’re anemic, in addition, of course, to reducing or eliminating iron, sugar and seed oils.
“My new phrase, and I don't know whether it's going to get traction or not, but I'm coming to the opinion that sugar is white iron,” Robbins says. “People don't realize how glucose metabolism influences iron metabolism, especially accumulation of iron, and it's absolutely staggering when you get into it.
So, I think it's important for people to just be aware that sugar isn't just bad, it's really bad. And I think the coupling with the linoleic acid, it's out of control.”
Retinol is vitamin A, which is not the same as beta carotene. They are two different distinct molecules, not to be confused, although nutrition labels get away with conflating beta carotene with
vitamin A. Vitamin A also should not be confused with retinyl palmitate.
What people believe is “vitamin A toxicity” is actually a sign of iron toxicity in the liver, caused by copper deficiency. What happens is, when you get vitamin A from your diet, be it cod liver oil, beef liver or free range eggs, the retinol is turned into retinyl palmitate and gets stored in the stellate cells in your liver.
To function properly, the retinyl palmitate then needs to be turned back into retinol, so it can be transported on the transthyretin (TTR) protein, composed of T4 and retinol. Without the retinol, TTR becomes destructive. While Robbins cannot prove it yet, he’s convinced that copper is required for the conversion of retinyl palmitate to retinol.
“And while we're talking about retinol, it's probably important for people to know [that] retinol as a key component of the movement of electrons from complex 3 to complex 4. The electron actually rides the back of the retinol structure. That alone is mind blowing to think about that.
If retinol is not in our diet, then it's not in our electron transport chain, then it's not able to support the optimal generation of energy. So think of retinol as an energy-focused nutrient. It's very unusual, because most of its [known benefits are] around immune system or vision.”
Retinol is best obtained through whole foods, such as cod liver oil, beef liver, free range egg yolks (the deeper orange the yolk, the more retinol it contains), cacao and hot cocoa, and organic grass fed butter, ghee and heavy cream.
Copper also plays an interesting role in energy production. Your mitochondria produce melatonin in response to natural sunlight, and melatonin in turn catalyzes and upregulates glutathione, which is important for energy production, antioxidant protection
against free radical damage and more.
As explained by Robbins, glutathione is also the “greeter” of copper in the cell’s cytoplasm. There are two metabolic steps to make glutathione, and one of the steps involve cysteine, which has a very tight relationship with copper.
Furthermore, a copper-dependent enzyme is required to convert serotonin into melatonin. Copper is also instrumental in regulating immune function. All of these functions are yet more reasons to make sure your copper level is optimal.
As for raising your copper intake, it’s best to get your copper from food and not a supplement. Good sources include bee pollen, grass fed beef liver and other organ meats. You also want plenty of saturated fats in your diet, as copper is a fat-soluble mineral. If you don't have fat in your diet, your ability to absorb copper plummets.
If you do opt for an oral supplement, Robbins suggests 3 to 4 mg of copper bisglycinate per day, taken with a fatty food (as it’s a fat-soluble mineral). The upper tolerable limit is 10 mg. This is so good because it has no charge on the molecule and readily penetrates cell membranes.
If you’re a farmer or grow your own food, you can put copper back into the soil, to get it into the food, by adding copper sulfate. Before you plant, simply spray the soil with copper sulfate, 10 to 15 pounds per acre. Alternatively, use a copper sulfate foliar spray, which is what I do.
Most farmers merely use NPK (nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium) fertilizer and NPK actually blocks copper uptake in the plants, which was highlighted by Andre Voisin, Ph.D., in his 1957 classic (which, sadly, is now out of print): “Soil, Grass & Cancer.”
Vitamin C Can Help Augment Copper Level
Whole food vitamin C can also boost your copper level, as vitamin C contains an enzyme called tyrosinase, which has 2 atoms of copper in it. Acerola cherry is one excellent source. A single acerola cherry contains about 80 mg of whole food vitamin C. Ascorbic acid is prooxidant, while vitamin C complex is actually an antioxidant. Anything that has copper is going to be antioxidant.
Do not make the mistake of taking ascorbic acid, however, as it is NOT the same as whole food vitamin C. If you were to compare the two to a car, vitamin C would be the whole car, fully functional, and the engine is an enzyme called tyrosinase, while ascorbic acid is the car frame, with no moving parts.
Importantly, ascorbic acid chelates copper out of tyrosinase, which is exactly what proton pump inhibitors do. It's my view that ascorbic acid is a “pharmacomimetic.” While it’s a natural molecule, it has drug-like effects. It acts differently from vitamin C because it’s been taken out of the vitamin C complex. For example, ascorbic acid does not prevent or treat scurvy. Only whole food vitamin C does.
Ascorbic acid was identified by two scientists who also discovered ceruloplasmin, the major coppercarrying protein in your blood, and ascorbic acid can affect the structure and the copper composition of this crucial copper protein too.
The ideal ratio of copper to ceruloplasmin is copper around 100, and ceruloplasmin at 30, giving us a ratio of 3.33. If that ratio starts to rise or fall, then you likely have some kind of pathology going on.
A ratio in the fours and fives is often indicative of inflammation or an infection of some sort. When it starts to drop precipitously, it's a clear sign that there isn't adequate copper to fuel the function of ceruloplasma protein. So, to summarize the key take-home, if you’re going to take vitamin C, use whole food vitamin C, not ascorbic acid.
AYou step on the scale one morning and you’re totally on track. The next morning, you’re up five pounds. It’s a confusing experience that happens to many people trying to lose weight. But you didn’t actually gain five pounds of fat in a single day. After all, gaining a single pound of fat requires consuming about 3,500 calories more than you can burn off. So, to gain five pounds in a day, you’d have to eat nearly 20,000 calories in just 24 hours. It’s important to know that your weight will fluctuate on a daily basis, but it doesn’t mean that your weightloss strategy is failing. For starters, I always advise my clients to weigh in just once a week. Obsessing with daily weigh ins are unhealthy and not practical as the human body naturally fluctuates. It is also not a mentally healthy practice to attach ourselves to. Let’s explore why this can happen from time to time:
1. Sodium: Excess sodium intake leads to immediate water weight gain. Excess sodium intake can temporarily increase your body weight by about 2 to 3 pounds within a day or two of consumption. The increase in body weight comes from fluid retention. Ask yourself- did you eat lots of processed foods? Did you buy a lot of takeout in between your two weigh-in days?
2. Exercise: After a heavy workout, especially the ones that use your large muscles, you can easily weigh a few extra pounds for several days. Those microscopic tears that occur in your muscle
cells after every workout heal through a process of natural inflammation. That involves some pooling of fluids around the muscle cells, which can make you puff up. Let your muscles recover and forget about the scale.
3. Cycles: Track where in your month you are up to. It is very common for women to see a 3–5-pound jump on the scale at those times.
4. Constipation: Fiber is critical to keeping your digestive system working its best. So, when you miss out on fiber from whole grains, fruit, and starchy vegetables, you're bound to get backed up. If you don't relieve yourself properly for several days, that internal traffic jam can translate to a couple pounds. Remember to slowly increase your fiber intake and also to drink loads of water when doing so.
5. Medication: Medication like antihistamines, insulin, and some antidepressants cause rapid weight gain for a bunch of reasons. Some medications can either cause your body to retain water, activate or increase your appetite, or even reduce your metabolism and increase fat storage. If a medication is causing weight gain, talk to your doctor and ask about alternatives or the possibility of reducing your dose.
6. Carb restriction: When you cut back on your carb intake, your body’s glycogen stores—its prime energy source for high-intensity
exercise— become depleted. But as soon as you dive into some carbs, your body starts storing glycogen in your muscles and liver, along with H2O. The sudden influx of those two nutrients after a long stretch of being carb-free could leave you bloated. The best solution: Include a moderate amount of whole-grain carbs in your diet daily to prevent the cycle of weight coming on and off. Dieting intensely just does not work. And just a reminder- a woman’s body needs carbs for physical, emotional and mental wellness!
7. Eating close to bedtime: The closer to bed, the less likely your body will use that food up as fuel, since you aren’t really doing anything when you are asleep. Food eaten at night is more often stored as fat because we tend to be less active, so we increase fat storage at that time, especially depending on the composition of the food you ate later in the evening. Carbs, specifically, if not burned, are then stored as fat. To combat this type of weight gain, it is important to eat on a set schedule. This is something I stress on greatly as it is a huge aid for healthy and sustainable weight loss. We structure our day around 3 meals and 2 snacks and we really should aim to end our eating by 7 pm. The body and especially the scale will respond best if the timing is consistent.
I hope that you got some clarity on this!

Since soups are full of liquid it’s a great food choice to stay hydrated and satiated. In addition, vegetable soups are loaded with disease-fighting nutrients. Root vegetables such as carrots, parsnips, onions etc. are packed with fiber and antioxidants (antioxidants fight stress by stabilizing molecules). Vegetable soups help you meet your daily quota for veggies. Cook a big batch and store it in portions to have on a day that you’re too busy or too tired to cook. ןאמסקאוו םירפא'ר ג"הרה Speech at the HISTORIC NEKADESH ASIFAH Wednesday ב"פשת ןויס ג"כ
After the War, the broken remnants set out to rebuild Klal Yisrael. Not everyone did—some were so traumatized that they never recovered; others, in their great despair, gave up their Yiddishkeit. But our parents built. Nobody knows where they got the strength, but we know what drove them: us. The vision of their future children is what carried them over the most incomprehensible challenges.
In a certain spiritual sense, we have also been through a churban. The carnage is all around us: lost souls, ruined lives, ruined marriages…. Many are lost forever—damaged boys and girls who will carry the scars for many years—although we never give up hope on anyone, chalilah
It is time to rebuild Klal Yisrael. The churban has already happened, we’re sitting on its ashes. But we can rebuild.
And we can start with the young girls here tonight. Young idealistic bnos Yisrael: Your whole life is ahead of you. You can make the decision to build your homes to be pure.
We need to create an army. Although Chazal tell us that it is not the way of a woman to go out to war, nevertheless, when it comes to a milchemes chovah, we are taught that even a bride goes from her chuppah to join the battle. We need an army of Jewish daughters to build their homes with a commitment to only possessing talk only phones. And then Klal Yisrael will follow. B’zchus nashim tzidkonyios. You’ll never regret it. You’ll lead a richer life than you can imagine, a life that most people have tragically never experienced.
But if we are to rebuild, we will need all hands on deck—even those who are not yet on the battle front. Everyone wants to be good, and some of us are not there yet, but we all have an obligation to support our troops. I received a letter from a yungerman asking that I speak about the social and familial challenges a family faces when they make the decision to live with minimal technology. Even if you are not yet ready to undertake it yourself, you can at least be on the right side. You can create a new culture where the highest level of respect is accorded to those who are rein, pure. A person who is rein is not a chinyuk, he’s not an extremist—he happens to be living in accordance with basic halacha
A yungerman tells me that his wife is being moser nefesh not to have a smartphone. All her siblings are applying pressure, and she just can’t face it.
What is that?
We’re all human beings, and maybe we don’t realize it but we all need to validate ourselves, and we all have heilige neshamos and know deep inside that technology is a direct contradiction to its purity. So, we can feel resentful to one who is being moser nefesh

The impact the BJX is having on the Brooklyn community, and beyond, is incredible. Close to two hundred Jewish college students and young professionals joined the exquisite Friday night Shabbos Seudah hosted by Yanky and Chaya Feuereisen.in the Young Israel of Ave. K ballroom. “I’m getting emotional seeing so many Jews come together," said world renowned speaker Rav Gav, who was flown in from Israel just for the Flatbush Shabbos Project. Many were astonished that a Shabbos of this magnitude was possible in Brooklyn. The old sentiment was that there is no need for kiruv in Brooklynyet each venue was crammed with less affiliated college students and young Jewish professionals eager to learn, grow in Yiddishkeit and experience Shabbos. “There must have more than a thousand people who joined the various minyanim, lectures and the Shalosh Seudos,” mused Simcha Katz.
Certain images are difficult to convey in words. You had to have witnessed firsthand the incredible achdus of all types of acheinu beni Yisroel at the BJX Flatbush Shabbos Project. “It was incredible to see the wide variety of Yidden who came from every background and every level of commitment. Frum and non-frumeveryone felt that this past Shabbos was transformative. “Rabbis Fingerer are above and beyond description. They are looking to help every single kind of Jew,” exclaimed Rav Gav.
Flatbush families opened their homes and hosted numerous students so that they can benefit from this special Shabbos. Rami, a young professional said that Shabbos was electrifying. Rav Gav spoke on relationships, the Parsha, happiness, achdus and resolutions.
Seeing the comradery, achdus and authenticity that BJX does every day for our brethren, evoked strong feelings from the entire frum community of Ahavas Yisroel and achrayus. “There are very few times that I genuinely cry. I literally could not stop crying as I watched Rabbi Fingerer dance with his students by Hashevenu Hashem Eilacha,” said Rabbi Rabinowitz. There was a palpable sense of excitement for Yiddishkeit on the faces and in the hearts of all the students.
“It was an unbelievable experience. The Torah from Rav Fingerer and Rav Gav blew me away,” said Noam S, a Flatbush resident. Adam, a young professional, said, “This first Shabbat positively impacted me unlike any other Jewish experience I’ve had thus far.” Mark, another young professional, said, “To feel so much light and love from BJX was amazing. The classes from Rabbis Fingerer have inspired me so much.” “BJX does the best work,” shared a student Ryan. “They really give a sense of community and authentic Jewishness to everyone,” he said. No one will forget the electrifying charge Rav Yitzchok Fingerer delivered Friday night, propelling all of us to “be on fire for Hashem and His children.” He ignited us to tap into the passion and fervor of Avrohom Avinu to care for one another. Rav Gav’s uplifting speech at the packed dinner awoke the pintele Yid of all in attendance. Both Rabbonim captivated the packed audience with their dynamism, wisdom and humor.
“It was a big zchus to join this Shabbos”, shared renowned singer, Yehuda Green. “The Shabbos Project was extraordinary. Each speech was full to capacity with every type of Jew. BJX is a unique organization,” said Mordechai Jaffa. “This is one of the most incredible Shabbosim I’ve ever
experienced,” said Rav Gav.
On Shabbos afternoon, there was a community-wide shiur with Rav Gav at BJX followed by a gala Shalosh Seudos at the Agudas Yisroel Beis Binyomin which again had an overflow attendance. Rabbi Moshe Fingerer, Menahel of BJX, said that just like it was extraordinary and miraculous for Avorham and Sara to give birth to Yitzchok at such an advanced age, so too, having close to 200 less affiliated Yidden come to experience Shabbos in Flatbush was beyond ordinary and miraculous. “The goal of the Flatbush Shabbos Project is to unify Brooklyn via Ahavas Yisroel and shmiras Shabbos,” he said. Rav Moshe Tuvia Lieff spoke passionately to the immense crowd about living a Torah ingrained life and gave beautiful berachos to everyone.
“I experienced Shabbatons around the world. Yet I’ve never experienced a Shabbat like this one. BJX is the most inspiring Jewish environment!" said Brian. “I thank Rabbis Fingerer and BJX from bringing meaning and light into my life," he said. This was one of the most uplifting and spiritual experiences I’ve ever had,” shared Joey who finally had his first Aliyah this Shabbos. Thank you BJX for teaching me what it means to have true Ahavas Yisroel and for shifting my mindset in such a profound way,” said Breindy K. Persistence, love and patience is the magical formula for reaching out to our fellow Jew and connecting them with their Torah birthright. More than a thousand Jews from all walks of life, ranging from yidden with Brisker Payos and kapatos to secular Jews who never kept Shabbos or stepped foot into a shul, participated. It is everyone’s hope that the crowds of Jews united in achdus and ahavas Yisroel should herald the coming of Moshiach.

“It’s a boy!” Sara called me ecstatically one evening.
“Mazel Tov! Mazel Tov!”
My heart soared with happiness, and at the very same time seared with pain.
Rikki was still waiting. And Sara, the younger one, now gave birth to her second child.
It was a beautiful simcha, and we took an active part as doting grandparents. But the other part of my heart bled for my precious Rikki, who was trying so badly to share in her younger sister’s simcha. But it was obvious that she was failing abysmally. Her anguish was too raw, too deep, to cover up very well.
One evening Rikki and her husband came for dinner. It was always my greatest pleasure to have my kids over, and this was no exception, although the pain was an ever-present companion.
Rikki was pale and listless, and her husband was trying to make idle chitchat to fill the gaping void. In a lull in the somewhat boring conversation, Rikki suddenly burst into heartrending sobs. She covered her face with her hands, and ran for her life. We were shocked. Her husband, trying to fight his own tears, felt a need to explain.
He sadly told us that the treatment that they had put all their hopes and money into, had fallen through. The doctors were becoming pessimistic.
My fatherly instincts flared up, and I too fled the room.
I ran into my study and buried my face in my arms. I cried like never before. I couldn’t bear to witness such distress in my own flesh and blood. I felt utterly helpless. All my life I had taken great pains to see to every single one of my kids’ need, and now I had to stand by and simply watch my child
suffering in agony. How in the world can I help her? I davened, gave tzedaka, and offered monetary support toward the treatment. What else is humanly possible for me to do? With a blinding clarity, it suddenly hit me. In yeshiva I had once heard a shmuess on the topic that if one does something against his very nature, Hashem will help him even if it is above nature. I was connected to my smartphone in a very natural way, in the same way that I was connected to my arms and legs. Perhaps if I amputate my smartphone, then Hashem will grant them a healthy baby, עבטה ךרדכ אלש?
Just the thought of giving up my beloved smartphone made me break out in a cold sweat. Can I? Am I capable of doing this? But then again, can I not? Am I capable of witnessing such anguish?
Then and there I vowed to sever this added limb out of my life.
I raised my tear-filled eyes, only to meet my daughter’s staring straight at me. I got up from my armchair, and went to meet her intent gaze.
“Rikki,” I whispered with all the love and conviction in the world, “I am going to do the hardest thing in my life for you. And I guarantee that you will see a yeshua that is above human nature. I promise.”
Just seeing the light return to her eyes, made my heart swell.
Although it was already way past normal business hours, I knew that if I don’t act on my kabbala right away, my resolve might weaken. I contacted my neighbor who sold kosher phones, and asked him to be so kind and open up his store for me right now. He gladly acquiesced, and within twenty minutes I was the proud owner of a kosher flip phone, and a smashed smartphone – against all laws of my nature.
Within ten months I was the proud owner of another grandchild - against all laws of nature.
When people started realizing what a Tzaddik the Chofetz Chaim was, they went to his mother and asked, “What Zechus did you have to have the Chofetz Chaim?” She thought about it and said, “I don’t really know. There is nothing special that I did”.
They pressed her further and asked her to please think. She said, “If you want to know, there is one thing. On the day that I got married, my mother asked me for a moment of my time. She sat down with me quietly and handed me a siddur. She said to me, my daughter, today you are Zocheh to walk down to the chuppah. My Tefilah is for you to be Zocheh to very soon have a family, and you should be Zocheh to raise your children in Torah and Yiras Shamayim. Your job is to Daven for them. That is why I bought you a siddur for the day of your Chasunah.”
“That is the key.” The Chofetz Chaim’s mother said, “If you want to know why I think I was Zocheh to the Chofetz Chaim, it’s because whenever I had a free moment, I would take out my Siddur and cry for my little Yisroel Meir, for my little Srulik to become a Talmid Chacham and a Yirei Shamayim
