Recap: Mr. Grossman is feeling nervous about the threats he’s received as he sits on his flight to England.

At her weekly session, Raizy tells Gila Batsheva how much she’s enjoyed her book, but is interrupted by a phone call from her mother’s number.

Dr. Bloom tells Mr. Vazquez, one of his patients, that his test results show his condition heading in a positive direction after his first treatment.

At the Grossman home, the unconscious man is transferred to an ambulance, while the chief police officer collects the guns that were found on his body.

Chapter 28

“It’s Tatty,” he said.

“Hello?”

“Hi, Tatty, it’s Avrumi,” Avrumi braced himself.

“Avrumi?! Why are you answering Mommy’s phone for her?! Where’s Mommy!!” Instantly, Mr. Grossman’s nerves that had been on edge throughout the six-hour flight flared up, sending red flashing signals through his head and turning his words into sharp, strident syllables.

“Mommy’s right here, Ta,” Avrumi said, his father’s immediate panic warning him that Mr. Grossman probably knew what this was all about.

“Put her on the phone, please,” Mr. Grossman commanded brusquely. “She-uh, she can’t really talk now,” Avrumi said hesitantly. “She’s had a bit of a shock.”

“I said put her on the phone!!” Obediently, Avrumi handed the phone to his mother.

“Hello?” Mrs. Grossman croaked into the mouthpiece. “I’m fine,” she said after a long moment. “Avrumi will tell you what happened.”

“Mommy’s still in shock,” Avrumi said apologetically. “The police officers also didn’t have too much mercy on her, and they made her tell them whatever she could.”

“TELL ME WHAT HAPPENED!” Mr. Grossman blared.

“It seems like someone broke into our house,” Avrumi said as delicately as he could. “But don’t worry, nothing was stolen. They found the guy outside our house, unconscious.”

“What did I hire them for?” Mr. Grossman muttered to himself.

“You knew this was going to happen?” Avrumi couldn’t help asking.

“No, of course not! Of course I didn’t know this was going to happen! Would I fly out of the country if I

knew this was going to happen? No, I didn’t know anything, but-“ “But what?”

“We did get a lot of threats recently,” Mr. Grossman admitted.

“From that guy who stopped us in front of the restaurant by my sheva brachos?”

“From the people he’s working for,” Mr. Grossman said. “But I hired a private security team to watch over the house. I can’t believe they messed up so badly. They’ll definitely be hearing about this from me!”

“You hired a private security team to watch the house?” Avrumi asked stupidly.

Just then, the chief police officer, Sergeant Hayes, walked into the room.

“How is your mother doing?” he asked solicitously.

Avrumi looked toward his mother.

“I’m doing okay,” Mrs. Grossman said in a weak voice.

The sergeant looked questioningly at the EMT who had stayed behind

“Yep, she’s good,” the EMT responded, hefting his bag. “Gave her some IV, but it looks like

“No, it’s all right. I’ll just keep an eye on her for another hour.”

“Avrumi?” Mr. Grossman’s voice came from the speakerphone.

“Yes, Tatty, the EMT was just saying that Mommy’s okay. She had some IV fluids, and she’s doing fine.”

“Who is that?” Sergeant Hayes asked.

“It’s my father.”

“I’d like to talk to him,” the sergeant commanded.

“The police officer wants to talk to you, Ta,” Avrumi reported.

“Put him on,” Mr. Grossman said, suddenly sounding endlessly weary.

“Hi, Mr. Grossman, Sergeant Thomas speaking. I understand you’ve just arrived in England?”

“Yes, I just landed. I’m still in the airport.”

“Got it. Now, I don’t know if you received all the details of the breakin that took place on your property tonight. Are you aware of the incident?”

“Yes, my son just told me about it.” “What can you tell me about it?”

“I’m pretty sure I know who’s behind it,” Mr. Grossman said.

Sergeant Hayes’ eyes widened.

“I’ve been getting threats to my workplace recently, emails and phone calls warning me that I’d better pull out of a certain recent investment I made.”

“Do you know who’s behind the threats?”

“No, but I assume that several large drug companies are behind it, as they are the ones who stand to lose most from the investment I’ve been warned to pull out of. I run an investment firm that provides

capital to young medical startups.

The investment in question funded the clinical trial stage of a potential new cancer treatment.”

“ProMedical Labs?” the police officer asked, making the connection.

“Yes. Do you know about it?”

“It’s all over the news,” Sergeant Hayes clarified.

“That’s the investment I’ve been getting threatened over. But I refused to pull out,” Mr. Grossman said with a touch of pride.

“Why?”

“I believe that Dr. Bloom’s is an important cause. You’ve seen the videos of the patients he’s helped, haven’t you?”

“Yes.”

“So I kept getting more threats. I actually hired a private security team to investigate the source of the threats and provide protection for my office, employees, and family.

I’m surprised that they botched so badly.”

“Wait a minute. You hired a security team?”

“Of course. I wouldn’t leave the country without making sure my family was safe. I didn’t dream this would happen.”

“Well, it’s possible that they didn’t botch all that badly,” the officer said, as his brain made the connections.

“The question is if the injured man is their guy, or if he’s the perpetrator.”

Avrumi listened in dawning comprehension. So that meant the guy who’d done this could still be on the loose! He felt shivers running up and down his arms.

“We’ll be in touch with the security firm then,” the officer said. “And yes, I do recommend you take the next flight you can get.”

Avrumi felt queasy at the thought of his father hiring a security firm to watch the family without telling anyone.

“Your father is taking the first flight back to New York,” Sergeant Hayes

said to Avrumi, handing him back the phone.

“That’s good,” Avrumi’s mouth said. He looked at his mother, still looking around in a dazed, unfocused way. Someone would have to stay with her until his father came home.

The screen showed two missed calls. Raizy had called back while they were on the phone with his father. He’d been panicking at taking care of the situation on his own, without his father or any of his siblings around. Being the youngest of the family hadn’t really prepared him for this.

So he’d called Raizy, because at least then someone else would know Now, though, the sky was lightening outside-it was nearly morning already. He’d be able to call all his older sisters soon.

Raizy was probably worried, wondering why her mother had called so early in the morning. But Avrumi didn’t feel up to telling her the whole story right now. He’d call Raizy back later.

Meanwhile, he had to take care of his mother, who had never looked as vulnerable as she did right then.

“Ma, I’m just going to talk to Esther Mindy for a moment, okay?” he said, clearly and slowly.

A spark of irritation flashed in his mother’s eye, but she nodded.

“Esther Mindy?”

She was curled up on a couch in the living room, her eyes at half-mast. When she heard her name, her eyes flew open in terror.

“It’s me, it’s Avrumi,” he said quickly. “What’s going on?” she asked urgently.

In a few quick sentences, Avrumi filled her in on the latest developments.

“So I think we’re going to have to stay here, to be with my mother until my father comes.”

“Of course,” Esther Mindy said instantly. A tiny smirk touched her lips.

“What’s funny?” Avrumi asked, feeling slightly annoyed.

“Just-yesterday I thought your mother was never going to want to see me again. And here we are spending the day in her house.”

Mr. Grossman snapped his phone shut.

“What’s going on, boss?” Ronny asked. He’d been trying to make himself politely inconspicuous while his boss alternately yelled and murmured into his phone’s mouthpiece during what was supposed to be a simple phone call home letting his family know he’d landed.

Mr. Grossman looked at his employee, unchecked emotions raging over his facial features.

“We’re going home,” he said succinctly. “Book us seats on the next flight.”

Ronny balked.

“You’re getting your way,” Mr. Grossman said with unaccustomed bitterness. “We’ll be pulling out of ProMedical tomorrow. Publicly.”

Ronny looked confused.

“They broke into my house,” Mr. Grossman said. “I don’t know why; I’m not clear on all the details yet. But I’m not going to endanger my family for Dr. Bloom.”

“How do you know it’s related to ProMedical?”

Mr. Grossman blinked. That possibility hadn’t even occurred to him.

He looked at Ronny, flummoxed. Why wasn’t Ronny dancing with joy at this announcement?

“Either way,” he said briskly, “I need to get home as soon as possible to be with my family. Book us that flight.”

Ronny pulled out his tablet, and it was silent for the next couple of moments.

Mr. Grossman breathed heavily. He’d never dreamed that they would actually make good on their threats. A sudden fury overtook him, and he clutched his chest.

Ronny looked up for a second. “Looks like the next flight is in three hours, boss. Do you want me to book it?”

Mr. Grossman waved his hand as if swatting a fly. “I said book us the next flight. Just do it!”

Ronny nodded, unfazed, and went back to his tablet.

What was he to dot? Mr. Grossman thought in despair. If they pulled out of the investment, made Dr. Bloom pay back all the funding he’d received, well, then, he was effectively shutting ProMedical’s doors. Dr. Bloom would have to declare bankruptcy.

Just as the drug companies hoped.

The iron resolve that had kept Mr. Grossman strong through all the threatening incidents refused to accept that that was the only possibility. No. He had to find a way to make sure that that didn’t happen.

“I booked the tickets.” Ronny announced. “Would you like me to let Finder Z know that we won’t be keeping our appointment?”

“Tell them the deal is off, unfortunately,” Mr. Grossman replied shortly.

How could he possibly save Dr. Bloom and his lifesaving treatment from doom?

“That’s weird,” Ronny said, interrupting his thoughts once more.

“What?” Mr. Grossman asked. “Seems this number is no longer in service,” Ronny said slowly. “I wonder why.”

Mr. Grossman looked at him. “You sure you got the right number there?”

Ronny nodded. “Yes, I’m sure. It’s not working though.” He stopped.

“Here, I’ll just send them an email then.”

He sent the email, but within a few seconds was looking up with the same befuddled expression.

“The email was returned,” he said quietly. “Looks like this email address doesn’t exist anymore.”

“That is strange,” Mr. Grossman agreed.

Ronny looked down again, and with a few rapid swipes of his thumb, brought up Finder Z’s website, clicking on the Contact button.

“I’m contacting them through their website,” he muttered to his boss.

“What do you think this is all about?” Mr. Grossman asked pointedly.

Ronny shrugged. “Honestly, I don’t know. Why?”

“Maybe I’m being paranoid,” Mr. Grossman said slowly as he processed what was happening, “but I’m wondering if this wasn’t a setup.”

Ronny’s eyes bulged.

The patient’s eyes fluttered. Sgt. Thomas, hovering anxiously over the bed, caught the tail end of the movement and rang for the nurse.

The call button buzzed loudly through the hallway, and a nurse poked her head into the hospital room. “Did you ring for me?”

“I think he’s waking up,” the police officer said.

“Oh, great,” she said, coming over to the bed. “Mr.-“ she checked the chart to find his name. But there was none there.

She looked questioningly at the officer.

Just then, a large hulking figure entered the room. The police officer and nurse both turned.

“That’s my man!” the newcomer exclaimed.

A Yeshiva Gedolah for Developmentally Challenged Boys

An After-School Program

An Upstate-based afterschool program for boys ages 9+. Children are taught limudei kodesh subjects such as ikrei emunah, ivrei and pre-yom tov prep. Here is where boys develop a love for Torah while discovering the joy and beauty of Yiddishkeit.

An HCBS Child Waiver Program

Shabbos Achim is a monthly weekend retreat with separate locations for girls and boys. Shabbosim are spent at one of Rayim’s luxurious properties. A Yeshiva Ketana

A yeshiva ketana program for adolescent boys up to age 17. Boys are surrounded by a warm, growth-oriented atmosphere where they are encouraged to learn and achieve their highest potential. Limudei kodesh curriculum includes Gemara, Chumash with Rashi, Mishnayos and Halachah. Secular studies includes English, math, music, woodworking, and more, building students’ self-esteem and chances for future success.

SPICED MAPLE PECAN COOKIES

Invite the warm and spicy flavors of fall with this chewy, delightful pecan cookie.

NOTE: Start prepping these cookies a night before so you have time to chill the dough.

Yield:28–30 cookies

INGREDIENTS:

2 ⅓ cups flour

1 teaspoon baking soda

½ teaspoon salt

1 stick (½ cup) butter or margarine, softened to room temperature

1 cup dark brown sugar

1 egg, at room temperature

⅓ cup pure maple syrup, plus more for garnish

3 tablespoons instant vanilla pudding (or 1 tsp pure vanilla extract)

½ teaspoon cinnamon (optional)

1 cup chopped pecans

DIRECTIONS:

1. In a mixer, fitted with the paddle attachment, cream the butter and brown sugar on medium speed until smooth (about 1-2 minutes). Add the egg, maple syrup, instant vanilla pudding, and cinnamon, and beat on high speed until combined.

2. Add the flour, baking soda, and salt, and beat on low until combined. Fold in the pecans and mix until the dough is creamy and soft.

3. Cover and chill the dough for 2 hours in the refrigerator (up to 3-4 days). (If chilling for longer than a few hours, allow to sit at room temperature for at least 30 minutes before using).

4. Preheat oven to 350° and line 2-3 large baking sheets with parchment paper. Scoop the dough into tablespoon-size balls. Place 2 inches apart on the prepared baking sheet.

5. Bake for 12-13 minutes until lightly browned on the sides. The centers will look soft.

6. Remove from the oven and let cool. Drizzle some maple syrup before serving.

CHIP MOLTEN CAKES

Warm, crisp and gooey, these chocolate chip molten cakes are the perfect comforting treat to warm up on a cold Friday night.

Yield: 10-12 molten cakes

INGREDIENTS:

1 ½ sticks margarine or butter

¼ cup sugar

¼ cup dark brown sugar

2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract

2 eggs

¾ cup flour

½ teaspoon baking powder

1 cup chopped chocolate bar (I used Ragusa), chocolate chunks or chocolate chips

Flaky sea salt, optional for sprinkling

DIRECTIONS:

1. Preheat the oven to 350° and prepare 10-12 cardboard cupcake cups in muffin tins (you can also use ramekins). Grease the muffin cups or ramekins with cooking spray until fully coated.

2. In a small skillet, over medium heat, melt the butter and let simmer until lightly browned (about 2-3 minutes). Stir constantly.

3. Remove from heat and stir in the sugar, brown sugar, and vanilla extract. Let mixture cool for about 10 minutes to room temperature.

4. Whisk the eggs and add to the butter mixture. Stir until combined.

5. In a large bowl, combine the butter mixture with the flour, baking powder, and chocolate chips/ chopped chocolate. Mix with a fork until smooth.

6. Divide the dough between the prepared muffin cups or ramekins (about ¾ full each).

7. Bake for 20-22 minutes, until set around the edges, but gooey in the center. Remove from the oven and sprinkle with sea salt. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream.

PEANUT BUTTER CRINKLE COOKIES

Deep peanut butter flavor with hints of maple and chocolate makes this cookie the ultimate treat.

Yield:28–30 cookies

INGREDIENTS:

1 stick (1/2 cup) butter or margarine, softened to room temperature

½ cup dark or light brown sugar

½ cup creamy peanut butter

¼ cup pure maple syrup

1 egg

1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

1 ¼ cups flour

¾ teaspoon baking soda

¼ teaspoon salt

¾ cup mini chocolate chips

flaky sea salt, for sprinkling

DIRECTIONS:

1. Preheat your oven to 350° and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

2. In a standing mixer, beat your butter, brown sugar, and peanut butter until light and fluffy, about 3-5 minutes. Add in the maple syrup, egg, and vanilla extract and beat until creamy. Add the flour, baking soda, and salt and mix until combined.

3. Scoop the dough into tablespoon-size balls. Place 2 inches apart on the prepared baking sheet.

4. Bake for 7 minutes. Remove from oven and flatten with a fork, making a vertical and horizontal impression. Return to the oven and bake for another 3 minutes, until the cookies are just beginning to set on the edges (do not overbake).

5. Remove from oven and let cool. Sprinkle with flaky sea salt or drizzle with melted chocolate. Enjoy!

IN SHIDDUCHIM

Q: Whenever I discuss shidduchim with my twenty-two year old daughter, she becomes nervous and panicky. She blushes when she even talks about meeting someone new and I notice her palms get all sweaty. She has always had trouble making friends and prefers small groups to large ones, but her fear of shidduchim is holding her back from meeting her future chosson. I keep telling her to relax and be herself, but I just don’t think I am getting through to her. Is there anything I can do?

A: While I cannot know for

sure without having met your daughter, it sounds like she has some form of social anxiety. In 2001, in The New York Times, Margaret Talbot reported that around 13% of the population is affected by social phobias. While social anxiety was originally considered a rare condition, in the late 90s, psychologists, teachers, and parents began to identify it as a much more common issue. Social phobias are characterized not only by nervousness when in social situations or when forced to give a presentation or speech, but also by a powerful desire to

avoid most situations that involve interacting with others.

People who believe they might have social phobia exhibit some the following symptoms:

• Frequently blushing in front of people

• Sweating in front of people

• Trembling or shaking in front of others

• Heart palpitations around people

• Fear of embarrassment causes them to avoid speaking to people

• Aversion to speaking to

anyone in authority

• Going to great lengths to avoid criticism

• Excessive fear of strangers

Many people might exhibit one or two symptoms of social anxiety -- after all, who isn’t sometimes uncomfortable when talking to strangers? However, it is the severity of the fear and the frequency of these reactions that classify people with social anxiety.

Here are some suggestions for helping your daughter deal with her social anxiety:

• Raise awareness. Many people are not aware that social anxiety exists. Helping your daughter understand that what she is feeling is relatable and treatable may relieve some of the stress that she feels.

• Reframe thoughts. Your daughter can recognize that her thoughts cause her feelings and behaviors, rather than external things, such as people, situations, and events. The benefit of this recognition is that once she realizes that the way she thinks influences the way she feels, she can then function even if the situation does not change.

• Social skills training. Through role-playing and interactive activities, your daughter can learn communication skills. If she understands that she has these skills in her social arsenal, she will feel more in control when she meets someone for the first time.

• Breathing exercises. Teaching your daughter relaxation breathing can help reduce the physical symptoms of anxiety. This will, in turn, help her calm her mind when it begins to race.

Curcumin Helps Patients Recover

For those who appreciate the unique spiciness of turmeric, it's serendipitous to learn there are several layers of extraordinary health benefits included with the active ingredient known as curcumin. One of the latest was revealed in a study in which scientists tested the powerful compound for its effects on heart failure patients.

Heart failure, experienced by over 6 million people in the U.S weakens your heart and affects its ability to pump sufficient oxygen. Patients no longer have the ability to participate in activities and exercise like they once did, which could be described as life altering.

Heart failure is also described as chronic, progressive and incurable, although a change in lifestyle, such as eating a balanced, healthy diet and performing regular exercise can decrease feelings of fatigue and enhance their mood enough to help people resume their lives to a large degree.

Research published in the Journal of Applied Physiology reports that curcumin may help patients with chronic heart failure by increasing skeletal muscle strength, endurance and exercise capacity. Although mice were the subjects used in the trial, the scientists are hopeful their research can eventually be translated to human patients in a clinical setting.

Turmeric is in the same botanical family as ginger, another powerful spice with proven, health-beneficial compounds. With that in mind, corresponding study author Dr. Lie Gao, assistant professor of cellular and integrative physiology at the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC), notes:

"This study showed an important proof of principle. Some foods and spices, such as broccoli and turmeric, contain a rich supply of antioxidant compounds.

Consumption of these foods or spices may improve skeletal muscle health. For patients with stable heart failure that have limited ability to exercise, compounds like these may be beneficial."

Interestingly, previous studies proposed that targeting skeletal muscle with antioxidants may be advantageous for heart failure patients, but Gao states that it's not possible to use curcumin on humans because of the high amounts it would take.

Gao then suggests that "other antioxidants" such as dimethyl fumarate, a drug currently popular for treating multiple sclerosis, could be used for its health-improving benefits. That said, curcumin is one of hundreds of plant-based nutriments, from carrots to tobacco, to be unapologetically sourced and manufactured into pharmaceuticals.

Curcumin: Gingery, Earthy, Healing

Curcumin, taken from the underground rhizome of the plant, is the pigment that gives curry its bright yellow hue, explaining why turmeric is an ingredient used to complement and color stir-fries and sautéed root vegetables, rice, scrambled eggs and braised greens such as kale and collards.

In just the past few years, queries about the spice touted to have a "cult following" have increased exponentially, according to The Guardian. It's showing up in foods like smoothies and the trendy turmeric latte known as golden milk, a potent blend of organic turmeric powder and coconut milk and/or virgin coconut oil.

Optional flavor additions include vanilla, raw honey or stevia, a stick of ginger and/or cinnamon, and sometimes a healthy dash of black or white pepper. The addition of ghee is used to soothe a sore throat.

In fact, the use of black pepper in golden milk is supported by a

study in which the "curcuminoidpiperine combination" addressed the symptoms of metabolic syndrome in 117 study subjects who exhibited both oxidative stress and inflammation. According to the randomized, controlled trial and updated meta-analysis, oxidative and inflammatory status showed significant improvement, even with short-term curcumin supplementation.

Tellingly, turmeric is called the "spice of life" in India. Golden milk is becoming increasingly popular not just as a pleasant, warming drink for cool autumn evenings, but as a sleep aid for people who struggle with insomnia. Further, curcumin has been identified as a substance that's safe, effective and natural.

A plethora of studies point to the anti-inflammatory properties of curcumin (Curcuma longa) and reveal more than 160 separate physiological and cell-signaling pathways, positively influencing arthritic conditions, cancer, obesity, inflammatory bowel disease, and, more recently, metabolic syndrome and dementia.

Studies Reveal Curcumin's Powerful Potential for Your Brain

In another study from mid-2018, scientists at Texas A&M endeavored to relieve patients suffering from Gulf War illness (GWI), characterized by "substantially declined neurogenesis, chronic low-grade inflammation, increased oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction in the hippocampus." In the animal study, GWI rats treated with curcumin (CUR) maintained better memory and mood function. In addition:

"Enhanced neurogenesis, restrained inflammation and oxidative stress with normalized mitochondrial respiration may underlie better memory and mood function mediated by CUR treatment."

The scientists wrote that their use

of curcumin was due to its longrecognized ability to positively influence several aspects of brain health. The rats in the study were exposed to low doses of DEET, or N-diethyl-m-toluamide, a common insect repellant, and other chemicals related to GWI, such as pyridostigmine bromide and permethrin. They were also subjected to restraint for five minutes daily for a period of 28 days.

Even more recently, another study shows that chronic neuropathic pain and the cognitive impairment that accompanies it can be addressed with the antinociceptive (reduced sensitivity to painful stimuli11) and neuroprotective application of curcumin, demonstrated using rats in a lab setting subjected to cobra venom.

Interestingly, the rats exhibited improvements in spatial learning and memory deficits, as well as increased exploratory activities due to the ability of curcumin to reverse the damage done to hippocampal neurons and synapses. Scientists concluded that curcumin can "alleviate pain, improve spatial learning and memory deficits, and treat chronic neuropathic paininduced cognitive deficits."

Mood and Memory Enhancement via Curcumin

The inflammatory and antioxidant properties of curcumin to improve memory and mood were again confirmed when UCLA published results of a double-blind, placebocontrolled 18-month trial in the American Journal of Geriatric Psychology, in which 90 milligrams (mg) of a bioavailable form of curcumin, taken twice a day, "led to significant memory and attention benefits" in people with mild memory loss.

Curcumin has been suggested as the explanation for why senior citizens in India, whose regular diets include generous amounts of curcumincontaining foods, show both a lower incidence of Alzheimer's disease and sharper cognitive function. Further, the study "results suggest that taking

this relatively safe form of curcumin could provide meaningful cognitive benefits over the years."

Gary Small, director of the University's Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior and the study's first author, notes that while the mechanisms behind curcumin's brain benefits aren't yet known definitively, they might be due to its inhibitory effect on brain inflammation, which has been associated with both major depression and Alzheimer's disease.

Forty people, including healthy people without dementia as well as those with the characteristic "microscopic plaques and tangles" of Alzheimer's, ranging in age from 51 to 84 years, participated in the study. Scientists took standardized cognitive assessments at the beginning of the study as well as at six-month intervals, and participants' curcumin levels were checked in their blood after 18 months. Further:

"Thirty of the volunteers underwent positron emission tomography, or PET scans, to determine the levels of amyloid and tau in their brains at the start of the study and after 18 months. The people who took curcumin experienced significant improvements in their memory and attention abilities, while the subjects who received placebo did not …

In memory tests, the people taking curcumin improved by 28 percent over the 18 months. Those taking curcumin also had mild improvements in mood, and their brain PET scans showed significantly less amyloid and tau signals in the amygdala and hypothalamus than those who took placebos."

The participants' amygdala and hypothalamus — regions of the brain known to control several memory and emotional functions, which were positively influenced by the curcumin — were defined as critical areas of the

brain.

Curcumin Is Used to Alleviate Stroke Damage

Still another study, this one presented at an American Heart Association International Stroke Conference, uncovered curcumin's ability to repair damage caused by strokes, which have been called "brain attacks" caused when a blood clot blocks an artery or blood vessel, effectively cutting off blood flow and triggering brain cell death and sometimes brain damage and even death.

Stroke symptoms include an inability for individuals to walk due to a loss of balance, a sudden, severe headache, difficulty seeing, weakness, often on one side only, and sudden confusion. It's crucial to know that the longer your brain goes without oxygen, the greater your risk of lasting damage.

A drug used on stroke victims, referred to as "clot-busting," the current and most common intervention, is a synthetic contrast to the curcumin-hybrid known as CNB001, which repairs damage sustained at the molecular level by the lack of oxygen.

Besides crossing the blood-brain barrier, CNB-001 works by influencing the mechanism responsible for the regeneration of brain cells and offers future stroke victims new hope for more complete recovery.

This is a specific example of a time when a drug can both save your life and prevent the very frequent and devastating outcomes of a stroke. Incidentally, medical intervention is crucial to help prevent such damage from stroke, but must be obtained within 60 minutes.

Curcumin to Help Prevent Cancer Curcumin has been identified as one of the most powerful

chemopreventive and anticancer agents, and recognized for its wide spectrum of pharmacological properties and inhibitory effects on metabolic enzymes, according to PubChem, which notes its wound healing and antimicrobial effects, and states:

"Curcumin blocks the formation of reactive-oxygen species, possesses anti-inflammatory properties as a result of inhibition of cyclooxygenases (COX) and other enzymes involved in inflammation; and disrupts cell signal transduction by various mechanisms including inhibition of protein kinase C.

These effects may play a role in the agent's observed antineoplastic properties, which include inhibition of tumor cell proliferation and suppression of chemically induced carcinogenesis and tumor growth in animal models of cancer."

The same study shows curcumin as able to suppress cancer proliferation and apoptosis (programmed cell death), thereby acting as a chemopreventive agent in skin, colon and stomach cancers. Other studies using animal models list breast, bladder, brain, esophageal, kidney, liver, lung, pancreas and prostate cancers, and more.

Significantly, the active elements in curcumin attack cancer while leaving healthy cells untouched. For the purpose of disease intervention, while turmeric is available in powdered form, it contains very little of the active compounds in curcumin, or only about a 3% curcumin concentration.

Because it's not easily absorbed through your gastrointestinal tract, it's more effective to use a highquality bioavailable curcumin extract, according to a 2013 study. A typical anticancer dose is just under 1 teaspoon of curcumin extract three or four times daily.

Reb Elimelech Biderman, shlit”a, received an emotional letter from a fresh father, three days before his oldest son’s bris. The man wrote that it had seemed as if he and his wife would never be blessed with a family.

It is difficult to imagine the pain and daily challenge of a couple in such a situation. Yet, even more challenging was the trial they managed to surmount.

The wife was very closely connected to her phone. She knew it was not perfectly on the right standard, yet she was so intimately hooked to the device that she could not picture life without it. From time to time, she would hear things that nearly convinced her to give it up, but each time, she simply could not bring herself to actually make the move.

In the meantime, the phone remained in her hands.

The inspiration came at an auspicious moment, just after one particularly

grueling prognosis offered by the top doctors. Their situation seemed hopeless. The pain dug deeper and stronger than ever before.

The couple was reminded of the words of Reb Yechiel Michel of Zlotchov, zt”l, in the Igra d’Pirka: “When a person needs to facilitate something that is above nature, for example, if he naturally cannot have a child, he should undertake a mitzvah that is above his nature, and he will enable [yeshuos] above and beyond nature.”

It didn’t take long for the woman to realize what these words meant for her. Giving up her phone was truly above nature. She had come to a point of dependence on the device and it seemed like an impossible feat. Yet, with such a promise, she finally gathered her courage, and made a move that surpassed her natural abilities: she dropped her phone, breaking it into smithereens.

And, indeed, the letterwriter wrote emotionally, it was now exactly ten months later. Here they were, hugging their firstborn son – against all odds!

Unfortunately, many of these drinks are filled with controversial ingredients and additives that can be sabotaging your health and your weight, even if they are zerocalorie drinks. Let’s take a closer look at some popular drinks and see what is truly going on beneath the surface. Nestle Splash, Dasani Flavored Water, Diet Snapple, and PowerAde Zero contain artificial sweeteners like sucralose, acesulfame potassium, or aspartame. Although these have no calories, artificial sweeteners have been shown to contribute to weight gain by encouraging sugar cravings. Research finds that they stimulate your appetite, increase sugar cravings, and promote fat storage and weight gain. When you drink something sweet – even when it has no calories – your brain is tricked into wanting more calories because your body is not getting enough energy (calories) to be satisfied so, you keep craving sweets, eating sweets, and gaining weight. This is why a lot of people never reach their full health potential or weight loss goals because they are constantly being pushed around by these chemical artificial sweeteners that trick the

brain and body. The truth of the matter is that there is nothing like plain old water. Water cleanses our system. Putting “dirty water” into your body cannot be compared to simple “clean water”. Flavors are designed to have addictive qualities and increase food cravings, contributing to a “food carnival” in your mouth. They trick your mind into wanting more and more. To take this a bit further, these drinks are also filled with loads of preservatives. To name a few: Sodium Polyphosphate and Sodium Hexametaphosphate: These preservatives are full of phosphorous, which can create a mineral imbalance in the body. Citric Acid: Although this is naturally found in lemon and other fruits, the additive used in these drinks is typically derived from mold made with GMO corn (not from fruit). Frequent consumption is linked to an increase in tooth decay and also can irritate the gut. If a drink contains lemon, shouldn't it just contain real lemon? How about just squeezing some fresh, REAL lemon or grapefruit into a glass of sparkling seltzer or water? Isn’t it a pleasure to know exactly what you are drinking and what is coursing through your body? I hope that after reading this article you will try to stay away from

zero-calorie drinks. The human body is an amazing creation and the way you train it is what it will get used to! When I start working with a new client that is very used to drinking lots of zero-calorie drinks and is nervous to stop, we work with the slow and steady approach. Slowly, slowly we start cutting back on one drink a day, saving soda and zero-calorie drinks for special occasions such as Shabbos. Remember this- there is nothing as good as water for your system. Give your body the care it deserves!

Weekly Story

It was already late for Shofer Bluzen in the Shul of the Chozeh of Lublin. It was Rosh HaShanah morning, yet the Rebbe remained secluded in his study. Finally, one of the Chasidim, Rabbi Dovid of Lelov, was dispatched on the fearful mission of knocking on his Rebbe’s door to ask what was amiss.

The Chozeh’s face, glimpsed beyond the partially opened door, was pale with terror and his eyes were red from weeping.

I see a terrible decree ordained in the Heavenly court for theYidden this year,” he told his disciple. “I’ve been praying and pleading all morning, amassing all my Zechusim in an effort to nullify the decree, but to no avail.”

Noticing a young boy with Rabbi Dovid, the Chozeh asked: “Who is the little boy?”

“His name is Yitzchak,” said Rabbi Dovid. “He is an orphan whom I’ve taken into my home.”

“Come inside,” said the Chozeh to the two of them, opening wide the door to his study.

Much to Rabbi Dovid’s surprise, the Chozeh launched into a Talmudic discussion with the boy. “What are you learning these days?” he inquired.

“We have just concluded a Talmudic section dealing with the laws of witnesses,” replied the young student, who would later be renowned as the Rebbe R' Yitzchak of Vorki.

“So, tell me a chiddush that you’ve come up with in the course of your learning,” prompted the Chozeh.

The boy said that he had been puzzled by the Halacha that a person cannot serve as a witness in a case involving a relative of his, whether his testimony is for his relative’s benefit or to his detriment. Understandably, a witness cannot be believed when he testifies in support of his relative; but why do we not accept his testimony against his relative?

“Well, do you also have an answer to your question?” asked the Chozeh of Lublin.

“Yes,” said the boy. “I thought of the Pusik, ‘And the two persons shall stand … before the judges,’ which the Talmud interprets as a reference to the witnesses. The Torah is saying that only ‘persons’ are qualified to serve as witnesses. Someone who is prepared to testify against his own brother, father or child is not a ‘person.’”

“My son!” exclaimed the Chozeh, “With this argument we shall win our case in the Heavenly court. We shall remind Hashem that He is our father. And what father can possibly condemn his own children? Come, let us go hear the sounding of the Shofar.”
